The fbis new email investigation has Hillary Clinton on defense, but her supporters in closely fought states remain with her. In a cbs news poll, 50 of us the investigation did not change their minds about voting for her. Only 5 said that it did. Last week, fbi director james comey reopened the investigation into whether clinton had mishandled classified information on her personal, unsecured email server. In that original investigation, some classified material was found, but no charges were filed. Now, thousands more Clinton Emails have been discovered on know about. Agents stumbled across it in an unrelated investigation of Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of clintons top aide, huma abedin. Nancy cordes begins our coverage. Im sure a lot of you may be asking what this new email story is about. Reporter clinton doesnt typically bring up her emails, but in cleveland today, she was eager to show she has nothing to hide. And i am sure they will r the same conclusion they did when they looked at my emails for the last year. There is no case here. Reporter she did not go after the fbi director. There were enough democrats doing that for her. Former attorney general eric holder said james comey committed a serious error and Senate Minority leader harry reid claimed that comey may have violated the law by resurrecting the clinton investigation 11 days before the election. Grassley criticized comeys vague letter to congress, in which he acknowledged that huma abedins newly discovered emails may or may not be significant. Jeff pegues has been talking to his sources about the fbi investigation. Reporter the fbi has built a Software Program that is scrubbing what could be hundreds of thousands of emails found on Anthony Weiners laptop. Investigators have already seen the subject, date, and time of the emails, but the software will isolate messages that may be relevant to the clinton server investigation. For those that came from clinton or those that may contain classified information. Then agents will manually go through those emails. Janice fedarcyk is a former assistant director of the fbi is it going to take time . I think this will be an extended process, given the sheer volume of emails and then any followup investigations, additional warrants, subpoenas, interviews, reinterviews. Reporter fbi agents in new york discovered the new emails earlier in october while allegedly sending sexually explicit Text Messages to a minor. Still unanswered is why director comey was not informed about the new emails until late last week. Also unclear is how abedins emails ended up on her husbands laptop and whether they will change the outcome of the investigation, in which comey recommended that mrs. Clinton not be prosecuted for mishandling classified information. New development, but the timing of the revelation put him at odds with the attorney general. It sounds like you dont expect them to rush it to get it done by election day. I do not honestly think they will rush an investigation of this nature and this sensitivity. Reporter part of the delay was in securing a warrant to look at those emails. We learned today that there was friction between comey and the Justice Department. Scott, attorney general Loretta Lynch felt that getting a search warrant in this case so close to an election violated department policy. Comey got one anyway. And theres simply no way for the public to make an informed judgment. Reporter congressman adam schiff says fridays announcement broke agency protocol. This violates policy about speaking about open or closed investigations, but also the doj policy about speaking about an investigation this close to an election. Floip a letter addressed to the fbi director sunday, democratic senator harry reid accused comey of partisan actions and alleged he may have broken the which bans most federal and some other Government Employees from participating in Political Activities that could help or hurt a partisan group or candidate in a partisan election. Investigators seized the laptop belonging to longtime clinton aide huma abedin and estranged husband Anthony Weiner during a separate probe into weiners alleged communication with an underage girl. Against the guidance of attorney general Loretta Lynch, comey sent a vaguely worded letter to congress fridayi know whether or not this material may be significant. Cbs news has learned the fbi deliberated over whether to disclose the information. Officials debated whether they would be accused of trying to manipulate the election by hiding the renewed investigation if criminal evidence was found. A person familiar with the process says officials ultimately concluded that the letter was the most credible approach after comey pledged to inform congress if anything new of the private email server. We would certainly look at any new and substantial information. We commend the fbi and the director on their decision to keep their word. Reporter Vice President ial candidate mike pence praised comeys decision over the weekend. What the decision this week showed is even 11 days before an election, no one is above the law. Reporter Law Enforcement sources say that abedin is cooperating and seemed surprised that the emails were on a laptop. Not get distracted by the renewed attention on the email probe. [ crowd boos ] reporter prior to fridays discovery, the fbi was a favorite trump boogeyman, part of a rigged beltway culture only he could fix. Theyve essentially corrupted the director of the fbi. What happened with the fbi is so sad. Do they make a deal where everybody protects each other in washington . Maybe thats it. I really believe it. Reporter the agency is now back on trumps good side. What happened today, starting with the fbi, maybe the system will become a little less rigged. Reporter trump is counting on voters anger with clinton to win over skeptical republicans and build on his enthusiasm edge. The latest cbs news poll show as majority of Trump Supporters in oral and arizona are more enthusiastic than in previous elections. Less than 40 shows clinton supporters feel the same way.
