Eric the aclu files a complaint against a West Des Moines hotel for alleged racial and gender discrimination. Elizabeth kccis vanessa peng reports the incident in question happened back in july at this drury inn off mills civic parkway. Vanessa the American Civil Liberties union of iowa says a black transgender womans experience at a West Des Moines drury inn left her traumatized. This experience made her feel humiliated and it made her feel , like in iowa she doesnt have rights. Vanessa on tuesday the aclu of iowa filed a complaint with the claiming discrimination by the drury inn. The complaint says Meagan Taylor is a black transgender woman living in illinois. She and a friend who is also a black transgender woman stayed at the drury on the way to a funeral. On july 12 taylor checked into the hotel. Taylor says it took an employee an hour to check in her while it took other guests just ten minutes. According to the complaint at some point during their stay drury staff called police to say taylor and her friend were engaging in prostitution, engaging in prostitution because they were men dressed as women. Its important to send a clear message not only to the drury but other businesses in iowa but also transgender people in iowa that they have rights. Vanessa taylor was arrested and charged with possessing hormone pills without a copy of a prescription. She was held for 8 days in polk county jail and missed the funeral. When taylor bonded out we tried to talk to her but she didnt want to comment. This type of discrimination is not only wrong and unfair , it is illegal. Vanessa all charges against taylor were eventually dismissed. Elizabeth aclu leaders tell me they will wait to see what the Civil Rights Commission does before they make their next move. Elizabeth todays november tornado threat comes just 10 years after 12 tornadoes tore through dallas and boone counties. Eric todd magel traveled to woodward taking a look back at the 18 million in damage that day. Todd the tornado came from just south of the woodward, just south of that caseys store and thats where the damage began. November 12, 2005. A day storm chaser jeff taylor will never forget. Just started shooting and within 5 minutes theres the tornado. Todd taylor caught the massive tornado as it slowly rolled into woodward. Minutes later destruction. The caseys store was brand new at the time. We went into the bathroom and you can hear it. It kind of sounds like everything is caving in on you, but its not luckily for us. Todd karla logan still works here. And is not fond of looking back. We had to dig the brick out so we could get out because we couldnt open the doors because all of that was in front of the doors. Todd just up the street the 150 miles an hour winds destroyed bill singlins Real Estate Office right off its foundation. It was a big event it was heart crushing. Todd it took it him months to rebuild. Most of the damage in town gone now. But the memories remain. And my brother called and said theres a tornado calling you better get outside and look. And i got outside and took that picture. What did you think . I thought wow. Todd one woman died when the same tornado hit strafford in boone county but everyone in woodward survived. And now another threat of fall tornadoes. Im sure there are several years ago. And hopefully it goes away. Todd 10 years later its hard to believe a tornado hit woodward, iowa.
