We were there this morning when governor branstad announced the creation of the Wrongful Conviction division to be run by the state Public Defenders Office. The focus of the new division will be to identify potential cases involving inmates who have been wrongfully convicted, as well as to pursue available legal remedies. Gov. Branstad this division of the Public Defenders Office will take the lead to move forward with postconviction relief, to see that the innocent people that may have been convicted are represented, and they get their day in court. Turning to news from around iowa now the iowa state patrol is , investigating the death of a woman whose body was found near near shellsburg. That truck was stolen yesterday in benton county. Two men who came upon the scene soon noticed blood on a door handle and then saw a blood trail away from the truck. They followed the blood and found the womans body. Her name hasnt been released. To mason city now, where a plea change hearing has been scheduled a man accused of using a hammer to beat his dog. 63yearold George Harrington has pleaded guilty to animal torture back in july for beating a boxer mix. Police say the dog was taken to a vet, who euthanized it because of severe head trauma caused by the hammer attack. The hearing for harrington to change his plea is set for november 16. New information now on that deadly sinking of a whale watching tour boat with 27 people on board off vancouver island. The Royal Canadian mounted police are taking over the search today for the last person unaccounted. Right now 5 people are confirmed dead. Another 21 people have been rescued. The cause is under investigation. Many parts of south asia are dealing with widespread disaster, after a massive earthquake ripped through northern afghanistan. Weijia emergency workers rushed a child to the hospital, one of wounded after a powerful hundreds earthquake struck northern afghanistan, where survivors are sifting through rubble. Interim chancellor morris stocks ordered the flag lowered this morning. The first bear hunt in florida in more than 20 years was so successful, it will come to an end on just day two. A new report from the World Health Organization today says eating processed meat causes cancer and that red meat probably does as well. Tina kraus has the details from london. Tina world cancer researchers say people who fill up on processed foods like bacon, sausage and hot dogs face a real cancers. Scientists from the World Health Organization say eating processed meats including those that are smoked, cured or salted poses the same cancer risk as smoking. To put that into perspective, the lifetime risk of colon cancer is 5 . If you have a hot dog every day, your risk goes to 6 so its very, very small. Tina while doctors have long warned against eating too much meat, the who report goes a step further, classifying processed meat as cancercausing and red meat as a likely cause of cancer.
