Sperm production and travel and so forth so when that's not working properly that's why we're seeing that like you mentioned Dr Marc some of the fatality issues or some of the other common issues that we referenced in the last segment Yes it's actually it's very very interesting all of the different components involved in fertility with men you have to remember infertility is about 5050 in other words 50 percent time something going on with a woman's body 50 percent time it's with a massive body you know like their sperm production and the health of the sperm which includes you know the fluid secreted by the prostate gland so we often think oh well for terror fertility infertility so women's probably almost almost 50 percent time it's a male problem and oftentimes there's problems the quality of the sperm the fluid that's nourishing not sperm right and let's talk a little bit more Dr Mark I know that we've talked about on balance I know we've talked about some of the issues that can be more players that can cause some of that but how essential it does prostate issues lead to more mono and balances it's kind of the opposite so when we have hormone imbalance it sets us up it sets the men up for prostate issues just because the tissue in Kandahar most sensitive so normally there's hormone imbalance aggravating the prostate but using more multi-factorial normally there's things again like I said dietary problems weight problems nutritional deficiencies and all these things also add to hormone imbalance and we take into the environmental factors men are exposed to all the Xeno estrogens these compounds that mimic estrogen in the environment and as I talked about before estrogen is a growth factor for the prostate step mice prostate growth so we get these chemicals in environment thousands and thousands of them pesticides plasticizers you know people herbal things like b.p.a. All these types of things which we talk about in the book and it creates more hormone imbalance at. Issues have you read anything on that Dr Mark absolutely matter of fact in the book we talk about when men have erectile dysfunction it certainly can be a sign of testosterone deficiency I mean the 2 definite can be very connected however modern research has shown that it's a it's a big warning sign it's a big warning sign you very possibly have cardiovascular disease you have plaque in your arteries inhibiting circulation so if a man out there has wrecked out this function should you have your testosterone hormones checked Absolutely but actually priority number one is getting your cardiovascular system checked because research has shown very conclusively it's a major sign that you very well have cardiovascular disease are your blood flow is not working well and you either have dysfunction inside the blood vessels they call endothelial dysfunction so the health inside your blood vessels is not good and so you're not getting good blood flow or you're showing signs of plaque formation which of course is occluding blood flow and you're much higher risk for cardiovascular events you know heart attack and problems of high blood pressure and things like that's what really is the warnings. There could be something going on negatively in your cardiovascular system you know very interesting how the body is a perfect design that's been shown to give us some signals to kind of look out for if we know what to look out and again you writing that the book you did healing the prostate doctors English is a wonderful shortcut for men and the women in their life to be able to understand things I want to talk about the thoughts around you can't walk into a 711 or any kind of store now where you can't find something that will increase testosterone I really in the last 5 years has taken I think by store men are wondering do I get the injectable do I do a pilot what kind of things are you seeing with that especially with testosterone replacement and what would you encourage some of our male listeners to avoid Well good points I mean testosterone is at its highest level in early adult hood as we talked about any decreases by about one to 2 percent a year beginning in the forty's and so men do have this condition at near middle age known as male menopause or answer of cause that's basically the syndrome the so save the decrease in what they call sexual satisfaction the general decline and wellbeing of all this is related to low testosterone levels medically we term it as hypogonadism pathway of saying your testicles aren't working that well also testicular hyper function those are the diagnostic codes we actually use and we're submitting labs to insurance and all that but yes if you have low testosterone it affects many many organs in the body so for example testosterone have a beneficial effect on the brain you could have cognitive problems you know men with testosterone deficiency your senior years if your testosterone is low you're much higher risk for dementia for example it has effect on your skin give you healthy skin has effects on bones you need for good bone density muscle mass a lot of people heard about and muscle growth that is true you need for your heart your heart the muscle of testosterone for deficient and more likely to have heart failure Studies show you need testosterone for energy production off the teeth as well the more. We're talking about all things men health but the actor Mark coming back I'd like to talk about really how different doctors and different organizations treat the prostate when there is an issue is it generally they're put on some type of a medication if it has any effect on the bladder which seems to be the number one thing causing issue for the men out there yeah the bladder is a very under-rated issue when it comes to your nation because again a lot of doctors are focused on the prostate not off the can be a major issue and often it isn't for. All but if we address the bladder along the prostate what I've found in years of treatment with patients. Techniques now for identifying how risky the prostate cancer you have is and so yes there are it is more common now for men over the age of $65.00 to be involved in watchful waiting or act surveillance instead of going direct medical treatment the citrus Stickley a man who's Or the age of 65 if they have surgery for prostate removal versus versus They don't there's really no statistical difference however if you're a man who has an aggressive form of prostate cancer then you need more drastic treatment so it does require proper diagnostics and treatment and so whatever man's doing we have found in our clinic there's always ways we can help them if they are an actor's active surveillance or watchful waiting we're proactive in giving very aggressive holistic support to them if they're undergoing conventional treatment then we're able to reduce the side effects usually help their immune system better by using the nutritional approach as we talked about in the book Dr Mark let's move on a little bit especially reference some of the earlier segment if we're looking at a men's overall health especially prostate in general or testosterone What are some diet lifestyle changes they would want to make for a modification I know you said if they're overweight it can cause more issues are there certain foods or nutrients that they should be avoiding Yes I mean if you look at the research what men should be doing who have large prostate or want to prevent it you need to get a diet very high in omega 3 fatty acids like in cold water fish vegetables ground flax seeds these are anti-inflammatory compounds. Including for the prostate they want to get high doses of plant lignin Zn or diet like and ground up whole flax seeds which help with estrogen removal and they protect against the ph garlic extracts have been shown improved disease parameters in people b.p.h. And in compounds called phenols found in cranberries dark colored grapes and berries those can help with lower lower urinary tract sometimes. Being careful by not consuming excess amounts of animal protein especially let's say like red meat and products like that which are not free range be careful with your saturated fat intake. Like say for like like dairy products excess of backtrace inflammation the prostate so I often recommend go on a modified Mediterranean diet to get those omega 3 s. Or get the fruits and vegetables the f.a.a. Oxidants Guinness very antiinflammatory we greatly reduced the grains because grains tend to spike the glucose in the insulin levels and high insulin levels is associated with prostate enlargement and prostate cancer so a modified Mediterranean diet we do actually get recipe and milk planning in the book for men to follow Wow That is awesome I mean because so often people be like don't eat this don't eat but I mean that you're laying it out here some helpful dietary no prepping plan that's pretty great Dr Marc let's talk about supplements we only with a few minutes before we go to break I know that is something you love you do a lot of research you deal make sure the ingredients have some published study on it I know you mentioned saw palmetto in the last segment but tell us more Dr Mark Well absolutely Again most doctors aren't aware there's very good research showing that men with b.p.h. The question said Hey Marty when the inheritor of a Roth Ira receives the inherited funds is it true that the distributions will not be taxed. Great question Ron. So this individual is basically asking if you are the beneficiary the recipient the inheritor of. A Roth Ira account. Is that going to be tax free just as if the deceit and had not been it was their own Roth Ira And the answer is most of the time the answer is going to be yes those distributions will not be taxed it would be. It would be unusual for there to be any taxes to be due on a required distribution from an inherited Roth Ira The only portion of an inherit Ira that could possibly be subjected to income tax would be the earnings on that account the actual contributions that were made to that Roth Ira whether they were annual contributions or whether these were converted traditional IRAs that will never be taxed because he that is after tax money those taxes were paid. In the year those investments were made so. You don't have to worry about the principle of the capital or the corpus that was invested being taxed and. In order for the earnings on that account to be taxable. They would have had to be distributed within the 5 year period beginning with the tax year for which the 1st monies went into the deceased's very 1st Roth Ira like that 1 may say that again most of the time when you inherit a Roth Ira most of the damage is going to be tax free in order for there to be a taxable portion which could be the earth. Things the interest or dividends or gains on the account in order for those earnings to be taxable they would have had to be distributed the rough ever would have had to be inherited within the 5 year period beginning with the tax year for which the very 1st monies went into the deceit and very 1st Roth Ira Now I want to peel this back just a little bit when it comes to the tax free nature of a Roth Ira everybody likes that and understandably so right here but he's looking for a way to minimize the tax liability in the Roth Ira is one of the few. The way that it works is there's 2 primary tests to determine if you're a fair distributions are going to be tax free now this is if this were your own Roth Ira I'm not talking that for the moment I'm not talking about inherited ones I'm talking about if you have a Roth you are investing in a rough arrow or you've converted traditional over to a Roth Ira and you want to start drawing out that money tax free basis there's 2 primary tests one is you got to be age 59 and a half that's kind of a standard bearer within the retirement planning community that's been around for a long time $59.00 and a half is the magic age 59 and a half or older. The 2nd test is that you have to have had a Roth Ira for at least a 5 year period of time now here's here's the crazy part of this it doesn't have to even be the current Roth Ira it just test to be the very 1st Roth Ira ever opened so if you open a Roth Ira 10 years ago and closed it 2 years later and then started a new. And you know 4 years ago the 5 year test is met because it goes back to your very 1st Roth Ira contribution Ok so that's how it works if it's your own. Personal Roth account but now to bring it up to the inherited account let's say if a Roth Ira owner dies say they died last year in 2020. And they open their very 1st Roth Ira. For tax year 2015 or if that's the case then when that beneficiary inherits the Roth Ira every penny is tax free to that beneficiary. Because they met the 5 year test. And this is true even if that original Roth Ira account no longer exists. And by the way it's even true this is this is an odd one of the one of those weird quirky pieces of the tax code this is true even if the contribution for 2015 was deposited in tax year 2016 remember with IRAs and Roth IRAs you can fund them. Up to the April tax filing deadline date deadline April 15th for the prior year so if I funded my. 2015 tax year Roth Ira and April 1st of 2016 and counted it as my 2015 deposit that meets the 5 year test that's we're at that's the truth so. Now let's go back to this deceased this deceit and. Texture 2020 if the deceased said open their very 1st their 1st Roth Ira. In say tax year 2016 or $272821000.00 and cetera. And then passed away the individual that inherits that account the beneficiary the earnings would be taxable. In that case not the deposits that were made into the account not the principle that was invested but the earnings would be taxable. If it's distributed before the 5 year period is up and again. And just to keep this is clear is as mud. This rule applies to the very 1st Roth Ira that the deceased ever owned. So if they opened their very 1st ever rough day or a in 2017. Then that entire account is available for tax free distribution starting in the year 2022 that would be 5 years later if the 1st rough account was funded for tax year 2019 in the beneficiaries would have to wait until tax year 20245 years later to get the whole account to be tax free including the earnings so that 5 year test comes into play. Whether it's your own Roth Ira for yourself your own Roth they can't or even if it's an inherited rough account so. I always have this vision. The people that make these kind of crazy weird quirky tax rules sitting in a kind of a dark smoky room with. Light of you know smoking and cigars and when garlic and if the other guy infinity you know I got. It let's put a 5 year rule on this thing and see if we can really mess people up and I mean it just it is hard to figure out with the intuitive logic is in something like this however. Give us a call here and get your connected AAA 344 live in 78344 live in 70 talking about Roth IRAs and what happens if you inherit a Roth Ira And basically you know it's in most cases is going to be tax free as long is the deceit and had a Roth Ira for at least 5 years that's a basic rule now if that's not the case the say the individual that passed away they did not have the account for 5 years it doesn't mean that the beneficiary can't get any funds tax free before. Where the 5 year period is up because all of the principle that was invested so let's say you know if I were 5 put just to give you an example let's say in 2000 put. Open up a Roth Ira say in 2017 and from 27801024 those 4 years say I put 5000 a year into a Roth Ira every year for 4 years so my investment basis is 20000. And let's say just to make a simple example say the account is now worth 25000. Well if I want to pull money out of that account as the beneficiary there or the so-called ordering rules that dictate. That the non earnings amounts or the principal the $20000.00 in my example that I invested at the rate of $5000.00 a year for 4 years those come out 1st. So these funds. Are immediately available tax free to a Roth Ira beneficiary. So the 5 year rule. Doesn't come into play here because we haven't held it for 5 years but we haven't taken out any earnings yet so as a result of that there would be no tax on that $20000.00 in my example now if you went to tap into the $25000.00 if you took the extra 5 out if the account were not held by the original the seed and owner for 5 years then there would be a tax. On that so. How's that for some funky rules right. So. That's that's the lay the lay in here now one thing. The age 59 and a half rule does not apply to a recent beneficiary so you know if grandpa passes away and. Leaves his Roth Ira to you know a grandson in the grandsons of 40 years old. The age 59 and a half rule is not come into play the 5 year rule is still there to determine taxability of the earnings or not but the age 59 and a half rule does not apply to 2 beneficiary or inheritors of that account. So now. If that doesn't have us scratching your head hard enough I've got more for you here there is another factor. That mitigates the chance that earnings would be taxable and that is the required minimum distribution rules so what a lot of people are surprised to hear is that you know if an individual dies and leaves the traditional Ira to a beneficiary. If it's a non spouse there are required minimum distributions. Even if the beneficiary is a young person there's no age issue here there's going to be r m D's regardless of the age of the beneficiary so for anybody that has to weigh in the year 2900 or earlier. Many beneficiaries would opt only to take out the required distributions each year and those required distributions are usually a relatively small percentage of the of the ira account. Since the already taxed funds. Like contributions and conversions come out 1st and earnings come out last in most cases the required distributions from a Roth Ira are going to be really small to small to cuz. The earnings to be distributed before the 5 year requirement is satisfied. Now if a Roth Ira owner passes away in 2020 or later 20202021 this year or last year there is no longer an annual r. And d. Required minimum distribution for most beneficiaries instead. They must now participate in the new inherited rough error rules they must empty the inherited Roth Ira account by the end of the 10th year after the rough owner's death. And so therefore they should be easily able to satisfy that 5 year rule and by the way that that new 10 year rule is the same whether it is a traditional Ira or a Roth Ira This was all redone. In 21918 of this law because for years we used to call these the stretch IRAs when you inherited an Ira you did have to take a required distribution regardless of your age even if you were you know 20 year old kid or 30 year old or 40 year old but you were able to stretch those distributions out over your life expectancy so if a 30 year old inherited an ira from grandpa. He could stretch those required distributions out over you know roughly 50 years or so if his life expectancy was age 80 and now we've got 10 years. Max to get it done and again what's interesting I think and kind of quirky about this rule is under these new. Inherited Ira rules the iris gives you 10 years from the. From the from the year that the individual passed away. To get those funds out what they don't care about what the i.r.s. Does not care about is they don't care if you take a little out every year for 10 years see you know you take 10 percent of the you can value that every year for 10 years and you have it fully liquidated by by the end of the 10th year they don't care if you do it that way they don't care how you do it you can pull it out any way you want over that 10 years you could wait you know for 9 years 364 days and 22 hours and then take the whole darn thing out on the lawn some as a matter you've satisfied the 10 year rule as long as you get that account liquidated. Over that 10 years and the heiress didn't care how and when you do it as long as you get it out over 10 years so it's kind of kind of weird right in you know the other thing that pops up all the time is again you know in most cases if you have your own Ira if you have your personal arity Roth or traditional age 59 and a half comes into play you've got to be age $59.00 and a half or older to avoid any tax penalties if you withdraw funds from an ira account. The age 59 and a half rule goes bye bye it goes away when you inherit. An Ira So you don't have to worry about the age 59 and a half rule if you were the beneficiary of. That is Roth or traditional. You do have to worry for the Roth account again about the 5 year rule so that the deceit and the individual that passed away had to have had that a regional their very 1st Rothbury even if it's not the one you inherited this is the weird part even if it's nothing in their very 1st Roth Ira they ever open that has to have had a 5 year shelf life or longer and if it doesn't you is the beneficiary will can wait after you inherit to make sure that there's a 5 year trigger on that account so that you can avoid any tax on the earnings of the account and don't forget we're talking about the Roth Ira we're talking about the tax not on the principle the principles already been taxed and that comes out 1st when you take a withdrawal so. We're talking about avoiding any tax on the earnings of these accounts and let me tell you something that can be and depending upon how long somebody said there are out there that could be a lot of money I have a situation. With a real life situation here in my office with an individual that put out 7 years ago I guess this would be Year 8. Did a Roth conversion. About $400000.00 account and they said hey look I'm willing to pay the tax on the 400000 they converted it to a Roth Ira custom roughly $100.00 k. In taxes to do that right that account is worth 800000 today. So. There basis is 400 the accounts worth 800 well whoever inherits that account the good news is they've already met the 5 year test so they're. Would be no tax liability to an individual beneficiary that inherits that account. So you know the numbers and again depending upon the circumstance that's kind of an unusual one it's a pretty large math error but it can get it can get up there in terms of the significance of avoiding the tax on the earnings of a rough Ira say. About every time is the whole inflation conversation. And you know it's a source of concern but if you want to nail would going to happen with inflation in the months or. Even the years ahead I'm going to suggest you don't listen to the pond it's you know want to listen to your of noxious opinionated relatives on social media he don't want to look at the price of gold you don't want to look at the Bitcoin price you don't even have to listen to economists' to as a general rule think that they know whole lot more than they actually do if you really want to know were inflation is currently headed. All you have to do is look at 2 numbers. That are freely and readily available to anybody on the Internet the 1st of those numbers is the interest rate. On the regular u.s. Treasury bond. The 2nd is the interest rate on the so-called tips inflation adjusted u.s. Treasury bond those are known as t i p s tips now why do I say that these 2 numbers are generated. By the profit seeking activities of millions of investors and traders in the bond market and in my estimation are the best available current indicator of the future of the c.p.i. The consumer price inflation or the Consumer Price Index and the good news is right now as we live and breathe they're telling us there's not too much to be concerned about today so let me give an example of the interest rate on the 5 year treasury bond is currently point 45 percent to sunder a half a percent. Of the inflation adjusted interest rate on the 5 year tips the Treasury the inflation adjusted is. Minus 1.7 percent. So the difference between those 2. Is $2.00 In other words the bond market is basically telling us in predicting that consumer price inflation. Of around 2.15 percent a year is likely we're going to see for the next 5 years. Interesting right. Other calculation similar calculations put the forecast at around 2 point one percent over 10. Even over longer terms than that so now this doesn't mean that and let me be clear about something it doesn't mean that inflation is guaranteed to come in and at these levels and it doesn't mean that these forecasts are guaranteed to be correct. But it does mean that if major inflation really is coming down the pike is from as many speak of and are concerned about it hasn't what it means is it's just hasn't shown up in the bond market yet that's what it means Marty what's the best way to prepare for that because obviously you know there are signs you know we we've heard the rumor on certain policy decisions by the by did ministration nothing is confirmed so it's a wait and see about how do you prepare your portfolio for that most likely eventual shift in the way things are going Yeah well good question you know when it comes to inflation hedging if you will there are certain at least traditional items no assets that overt over time have proven to be pretty good inflation hedges and this is where you get into the hard asset conversation. You know gold and silver gold coins it's. Real estate of course has traditionally you know the bricks and mortar traditionally been an outstanding long term inflation glad you brought gold up actually just in the last year even before the switchover in administrations that was really being looked at as hey you know what you want something safe you want to have something that's possibly going to hold the test of time that's definitely a great option Yeah and and it really is a long term hold I mean you know when you talk about the metals you have to understand there are certain costs that are associated with it's not usually inexpensive to buy at the costs of buy it the fees to buy it can be you know relatively high and to sell it you've also got a story to shoot you know where are you going to hold to go you're going to you know put it in your pocket you're going to leave it. In your sock drawer you know what once you're able to obtain it it it holds that value but there are but there is a lot to getting it yeah and and it's volatile in terms of the pricing you know it did you know for a decade Gold didn't do much of anything price wise. When it tends to jump it tends to jump in spurts and those spurts do tend to be inflation. You know an inflation standard so that would be no. Good inflation hedge real estate another one and you know again the stock market although certainly can be a bumpy ride with a lot of volatility but if you you know subscribe back to the theory that I ultimately come to in then you know that is that when you price security when you price a stock. It's going to be priced as a multiple of its earnings so if you have a stack that selling for $10.00 a share and it's earning one. There is share then the multiple is $10.00 to $1.00 and so if prices go up. You generally going to see corporate earnings go up. And when go up the multiples go up so you know again although the stock market is subject to a variety of different types of risks it tends to do well on the inflation as an inflation hedge as well. And again you know when and when I talk about these things I'm always very cautious because I want to make sure that our listeners it doesn't mean you just go out and start buying stocks or gold or silver you know because I mean or what every It means a you have to put this together in the form of a strategy a plan that's going to be personal for you it's going to be based on your age your risk tolerance level you know your lifestyle you know what's rich really fascinating when you get into the inflation conversation. For years and years I believe that individuals have their own personal net inflation adjusted family rate and what do I mean by that well what I mean is that you know the government gives us their inflation number their c.p.i. Number the Consumer Price Index and they say or a you know inflation is whatever 2 percent. But depending upon how you live your life you may or may not experience inflation the same way I mean there are certain items example would be food everybody got to buy food so food is one of those items that you know if costs go up you're going to pay the increased cost but if travel you know say air travel goes up at a higher than inflation adjusted number if you're not a traveler if you're not flying to Paris for dinner you're not experiencing this. Same you know. Personally adjusted inflation rate as the government puts out is there c.p.i. Rate you know about 30 percent of the c.p.i. The Consumer Price Index about 30 percent of that is is comprised of housing real estate and housing costs Well again if you don't buy a house every year then you may not personally experience the same inflation rate as the c.p.i. Number so. You know just just things to think about as you address this because I know it's a concern you know we have. It in the it's tempting to worry about inflation ahead we are emerging from a gigantic economic crisis and our government is printing. Money and throwing money at the problem on a scale that really has never before been imagined the Democrats now control. The White House and both houses of Congress and they're talking about more measures to. Reflate or to expand this economy. President Biden is pushing his $1.00 trillion dollars economic stimulus package so look some really smart people think inflation is coming. And. You know this is this is one of those kind of lurking behind the bushes kind of conversations because. The fact of the matter is you know if you if you go back to my initial. Discussion here. You know the calculations as you look at the at the Treasury bond in the tips pond you know it's not can it's not showing inflation is a concern yet. You know inflation based on where those bonds are positioned in the 22 point one percent range but again you know I know that it's tempting to worry about it coming out of this giant crisis and you know still in this crisis in the government spending how to rate just continues to throw money at this thing in a trillions and trillions of dollars by President Biden pushing another. Almost 2 trillion $1.00 trillion dollar economic stimulus package. And you've got a bunch of smart people that think inflation is coming I think ultimately it is. But it's not showing and it's ugly face today. You've got. Jeremy Siegel a finance professor at the University of Paris. Sylvaine years Wharton School a new. Hedge fund manager by the name of Christe Crispin ody who thinks that inflation of 10 to 12 all the way up to 15 percent is on its way and as I said earlier I've had conversations with a number of our money managers portfolio managers that have told me that this is on their you know it's on their radar screen they're worried about the risks of inflation. You know it it if you reflect back if you're a Depending upon your upon your age number of gray hairs on the on the scale peer You know I reflect back to the Jimmy Carter days and. Many of us are around can remember now C.D.'s at the bank when you're certificates of deposit at 1214 percent I mean I remember those days and you know I think I shared this story last week but I actually did a little online shopping for one of our clients at 100000 bucks in the bank and he wanted me to show up on your C.D.'s form so I did I went online and you know into couple of our websites that have a lot of the f.d.i.c rates and the very best rate I could find on a one year certificate for $100.00 k. Was point 8 and even get one percent while it is definitely not what it used to be Marty can you imagine I mean you know if you look if you have money in a bank checking or savings or you know bank money markets it's. I mean it's literally pennies literally pennies a maybe you know less than half of a percent 3 tenths of a percent 2 tenths of a percent it's there's just no safe yield to be found. And so you think I think back to you know the Jimmy Carter years there were inflation was rampant Now here's the thing I mean most people would love to see you know I'm getting 10 or 12 or 14 percent on my. You know my one year cd but you know inflation was off the graph high. The marginal tax brackets who were all the way up to 70 percent at the top a few were in the top bracket so you know if you're getting a 10 percent yield. You know. With it and you're a top tax bracket person paying 70 no losing money yeah you're you're losing money to tax and inflate your go in broke safely is $1.00 sound good. You know you got your money in the bank so you think you're safe but you're you know you're going broke safely because I mean ultimately when that money comes out of the bank and you you know store using it it's going to buy less stuff then when you put it in the bank is there any alternatives other than maybe you know like you were been talking about like the top cd that you can find that you would say hey maybe people should do this with their money instead of a cd yeah the often out there this morning there are there are tools in the game and you know because of where we are in the interest rate market right now they're not going to be tremendous but so for example I have one of Earth we have a 3 year fixed insured annuity accounts a 3 year account. 2.22.2 percent a year if you go at the 5 years we can get that up to about 2 and a half percent a year and so you know these accounts mature in 3 years or 5 years it's like a 3 year cd conceptually where you're getting a guaranteed rate for that term and again you know if you shop if you shop bank it can say just there's just no where you're going to find 2 percent anywhere. And we have still evidence of that inverted yield curve and what I mean by that no is you know traditionally in the in the yield market in the interest rate market the longer. The term the longer duration the better the return so you know when in a normal market the one year cd is paying 2 percent in the 5 year cd is paying 3 percent so as you extend the term you know from one year to 5 years you get a better rate that's traditionally how it works in the inverted yield curve it works the other way the longer you go the lower the rate. So there's really very little incentive in fact I would argue practically none for somebody to say well you know I'm going to I'm going to take a 5 year lock on this money because the 2 year rate is better then the 5 year rate these days and that's what that whole if you've heard that term before the inverted yield curve that's what we're talking about where the on the longer term deposits are actually going to pay less return less interest then and then the shorter yield since around up here Marty what about annuities let's let's close with that yeah well these are you know like the 3 year annuity can get you in the 2 to 2.2 percent range a 5 year guaranteed annuity up near 2 and a half percent and then they mature at the end of the term 3 years or 5 years or whatever the term is and then you can take your money and run so the new woodies you know are better than the bank rates for sure and people need to realize remember there are there that there are the fixed annuities and the variable i know your call was kind of cautious with the variable ones Yeah very much so because the challenger in variable annuities this is these are the ones that give the annuity world kind of a black eye if you will very high expenses high management fees. And you lose the conversion of capital gains on an internal asset so it's never been a product that I've been comfortable with fixed annuities look they protect your capital they're safe and as they said they pay. Competitive yields better than bank returns and you know exactly what you're getting and for how and for how long you're getting it so fixed annuities you know protect your money and give you a fair return variables are in the market they can go up they can go down but if you're going to do market investing I want to do it on a you know a fee conscious basis in the problem with the V.A.'s the variable annuities is that they really do get smacked and should get smacked because sometimes their fees are up around $33.00 and a half percent a year. Just for reasons why it's good to have a financial planner you can do it yourself but at the end of the day can get complex and you you don't have the time and that's why there is people like you that's right well thanks so I appreciate that because it's the truth I mean you know when people come in and Irish actually show them what you know I had a gentleman in last week that brought a variable annuity account and it's done Ok it's not lost money and Bill when I showed him what that same account would have done had it not been in the variable annuity as it was or that there is a category you know or even in the market in a straight mutual fund with the variable annuity fees it would have done you know about $3.00 and a half percent per year better because that's what was coming out in the in the form of the variable annuity fee so yeah I intially educated which you and I talk about so much and yet know what you're looking for know what the questions to ask or and then making sure that we're talking about a suitable product that meets your needs from a risk tolerance standpoint and is allocated properly so that is the name of the game no I appreciate the comment and again friends as I look at the clock here we are away and in our time down just a couple of minutes of our time left here on this edition of the broadcast we cover lead territory today and again you know if you ever have questions on anything I've talked about or want to drop me an e-mail question I invite you to go over to my Web site we have a lot of good information there for you we've got articles and calculators and there's a really good 14 minute video or.
