Dance dance dance just dance and good morning, america. Happy friday, okay, could you make a free throw staring at Michael Phelps like thatn curtain of distraction . Youever know whos going to be behind that curtain. What a night in politics. Last debate for the republicans before the first votes and donald trump did follow through on that promise. He refused to take center stage, instead he hired a hall just five minutes away, held his own veterans. Actually it was at one point in the evening there were five big eventsoing ont the same time. As you know, three days until the Iowa Caucuses and its your voice, your vote. We have full Team Coverage stting with abs Jonathan Karl in des moineses, iowa, this morning. Good morning, jon. Reporter good momorning, robin. From the moment he got in the race back in june, donald trump has dominated the campaignn but for one night, the other candidates took center stage without him. Lets address the elephant not in the room tonit. Reporter from the start of last nights debate the republican candidates took on that elephant not inhe room. Donald trump. Donald trump. Donald trump. Donald donald. Reporter they mentioned his time seven times in the first ten minutes with ted cruz mocking the donalds abnce. Im a maniac and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat and ugly and, ben, youre a terrible surgeon. Now that weve gotten the donald trump portion out of the way [ lahter ] reporter but a debate without ump turned mostly tame, a showdown without the spectacle. The candidadates instead dove into policy, the first real fireworks coming over immigration reform. B because y used to support a path to citizenship. So did you. But you changed so did you, marco. Throughout thihis campan youve been willing tooay or do anytytng in order t get votes. Immigration. Wh i ran in texas i told the people of texas if you elect me nesty. Dictionary converter. Ted can change his mind. Marco can change his mind. Reporter hoping to rise in iowa before mondays first in talked tough on foreign policic andd also took on t t mocrats. I think berninisanders is a sweden. Reporter cruz at center stage for the first time failed to take over the spotlight left open by trumps absence. Hisangle with the moderators fallin flat. Chris, i would note the last four questions have been, rand, please attack ted, marco, please attack ted, chris, please attack ted, jeb, please attack jeb. [ booing ] lete say in this s if. It is a debate, sir. Gosh, if you guys ask one more mean question, i may have well, dont worry, im not leaving the stage no matter what you ask me. Eporter trumps presence or nonpresence was felt even after the debate was over, tak a look at this photo i shot at almost midnight as i was leaving, these guys dressed as cckens with a milk cartonn with d Donald Trumps donald. You took that picture, jon. Cayou tell . I cant tellour photography. Jon, did the moderators have to be prepared just in case donald trump decided to show up during the debate . Reporter well, his event was only five minutes away so there was real uncertainty up until the last minute about whether or not he would come and make a surprise appearance. Megyn kelly said that they d two alternative outlineses for questions and that sheidnt t final wordd that he was definitely not coming until 15 minutes before the debate started. All right. Thank you, jon. Reports he had a few conversations over the course of the day to rog ailes, the head he was just a few minutes away, donald trump, hired his own hall, had his own crowd along with mike hucbee a Rick Santorum. Tom llamas has all the details. Reporter george, good morning to yo as you heard in jonathans piece, trump wasnt there but he did take some fire on that stage and h he said last night he actually considered showing up to the debate and that fox up to the last minute was trying to gehim to go there. The show must go on, and thsday night it did. I didt want to be here, i have t be honest. I wanted to be about five minutes away. Reporter trump claiming fox news apologized to him, but it wasnt enough to reconsider. Fox has been extmely nice and the last number of f urs actuallyly. [ laughter ] and theyve wanted me and they they called a few minutes ago. How about now, i said, hasnt it alady started. Ws ying on thursday chairman roger ailes had three brief conversations with dononald trum today about possibly appearing at the debate. And that tru offered to appear at the debate upon the condition thatox news contribute 5 million to hisisharities. Wewexplained that was not possible and weouould not engage in a quid pro quo nor could any money change hands for any reason. We raise over 5 million in one day. Y. Reporter trump still claiming victory. Telling his crowd they raised more than 5 million for veterans. Isnt that better than this debate thats going on while everyone is sleeping . Theyre all sleeping. Reporter the gop frontrunner even wrangling Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee who debated on the undercardtage tooin him. Event . Hes raising money for veterans. You know, his decision as to whether or not to go to the dedebate is a separate issue. Reporter trumps followers, some who brad freezing speech on an outdoor monitor say it was the smart ay. I thought it was a great idea. Donald trump has a choice to do that. You know, when these people dont play fairlrly then why go. U know, lets go out and support the best. Reporter and trump personally d donated 1 million. Thats what he said to the event. Last night he sent out this tweet. An unbelievable eventnt in iowa with our great veterans. We raised 6illion while the politicians talked. Now, trump says 22 vets organizations will get that money, many here inowa and one of them spoke to abc news. They said they got a calll from the tmp campaign yesterday who said, que, it wiwi be better than winning the lolottery. Gege. Okay, tom, thanks very much. Lets talk about this more with matthew dowd,ur political analyst and cecilia vega coring the hillary campai. Okay, we cant know for sure what the 30,000 or 40,000 un undecideded voters in iowa think t you got to say at first blush it looks like trumps bet paid off. I absolutely think it dfrment as him as the brash starting quarterbacack doesnt s show up for the game, the trash talking backup quartback fumbled thehe firsfew steps which is ted cruz and i think donald trump benefited by what happened on that stage. Fell flat. In the urse of that debate you had a b better picture of ted cruz and i dont think thatdid well for him. Who did well. I think the interesting thing, oers were able to shine and i think rand paul did very well in the course bush had a pretty good night. I think jeb bush had a good night and marco rubioion the fifit hour had a good night but in the end donald trump didnt show and won. Hillary clinton came in for a lot of fire last night. She had a bunch of attacks. I think we have one ready to go. Her cpaignn tweed this image of donald trump out and with it, there you go, they say, she sayays trying not to throw my remote at the tv is what they were talking about. This plays into her narrative. Shes even gone to the point shes not talng about him as much on t t campaign trail right now going above the fray and looking at republicans and even looking past iowa, i think, into this general pretty tight race but most polls show sheas a slight lead and shes moved into a different phase. Whats the plan for the fininal three days . Cautiously optimistic, she is bringing in the big guguns. Well see her on the trail for the very first time with bill and chelsea this week looking well past iowa. They know thehe races tightnd i doo think they realize t ts could be a loss and not bracing fort yet but ready if it happens. Whats the biggest unknown . I think the biggest unknown is turnout. We dont know. Everything about Bernie Sanders victory is dependent on new voters and so is donalald trumps and depding if those show up it goes in two different directions. Thanks very much. Were going to have full coverage here at abc news this week on sunday morning, gm iowa and all the results live monday night and next saturday the Republican Debate at 8 00 eastern. Robin. Im sorry. Reporter accding to espn during an appeal of his 33year maximum sentence, simpsons attorney reportedly filed a sworn statement that he suffered numerous blows to the head and or landed on my head violently while playing otball. Though he never relied on that concussion defense for his appeal, a new trial was denied. While dr. Omalu stresses that ct doeoesnt excuse the criminal behavior that landed o. J. Behind rs, he does want the case to lifealtering damage the sport can cause. Now, dr. Omalu claims he has y to examine a retired player that doesnt have cte and that in his opinion athletes playing football to the pro level have a 90 to 100 of getting it. All the more reason he says to talk to kids or talk to parents exposed to all those hits on the field. Well look at the legal ramifications with dan abrams who covered both of the simpson trials very extensivel ryan alluded to this. Could this have been anything he used in eititherf his cases. Not as a defense, per se, aning he couldnt have said, look, ive got this and, therefore, i im not guilty. He might have been able to argue, you shoul be able to give me a lesser sentence, because look a at what ive been suffering called a mitigating factor in sentencing. But when it comes to guilty or not guilty, saying Something Like i have a brain disease isnt enough. Thats why we talk about thehe insanity defense because the criminal law is so black and ite in that rerd. Do you think now not just pro players talkiking college plers, high school players, that if they get in trouble with the law that they could use this defense . I think were actually going to see it a lot, particularly when it comes to sentencing. Because youre going to see someone convicted o of a crime, that, you know, they got hit a ton in high school or college, thats what led them to become more violent, et cetera, and, you know well see if judges accept it as a mitigating factor but againeally important to distinguish between guilt and innocence where this wont be particularly useful and the sentencing phase where someone could say, i should get a reduced sentence because of what im suffering from. This is bringing a lot of attention to this, but not sure o. J. Is the right spokesperson. He is the last person you want as the spokesperson for this, right . I mean, no one wants to sympathize with o. J. Simpson, soo whether he has it or doesnt have it, its probably not goi to be particularly useful for the cause. Got it, thanks, dan. A lingerie designer claiming the chain stole her dine. Abcs Rebecca Jarvis has that ory. Reporter theyre some of the worlds most famous figures, the reporter but one lingerie designer is suing the megachain for allegedly stealing her body of work. Debra mackinnon who runs new jersey intimate apparel zephyrs claiming theyre selling a knockoff version of her pushups. Its anamically correct and creates lift and cleavage while maintaining a natural appeance under clothing. Shes saying what is in the store w was her idea. I have put a lot of type, work, energy and investment into ininvestigation and i just want property. Mckinson says she got the idea in january of 2008 after 20 mockup ae. Its and then pitched her product to victorias secret telling the megachain she was applying for a patent but would give t t company exclusive licensing rights if they came to an agreement. According to the complaint, mackinnon claims she sold tens the company from 2011 to 2012 until victorias secret decided to terminate tear agreement and began makining lower quality knockoffs. This specific case is a classic david and goliath story where you have an entrepreneur and a large u. S. Conglomerate corporation. Reporter were joined by rebecca and we als have shark tanks daymond john in orlando on t tour for his new book the power of brokoke which by the way bestsellers list. Well deserved. Thank you. Daymond, we want to know what protect herself. Shehoul have had a non nondisclosure agreement wn she goes and shops it to a the brands and that procures or saves the fact shes not going to bee able to get knocked offff because they signed an agreement and should have walked i there with a provisional patent that holes her place f that patent for at bra for about a year actual product. But because she didnt do that, what chances does she have at winning this . Very little because you know what, they probably didnt want to sign an nda because they probably get, you know, pitched bras all the time. Probably have a staff of 200 people deloping bras and theres going to be a pushhup a in thesystem, sohey probably dididt want t sign that s s thehe prorobably decided to hole the meetings regardless. What suggestions do you have . You have people that come on your show and have these great concept, products and that and you know they go to bigger places and how do they protect themselves . First of all they have to trademark the name and concept. If thes a design patent they have to also copyright the design pat ten and they should go out and get arovisional patent so it holds their place in line ashey develop the product. They canant just wk into a big company and say, hey, take a look at this. It could have been a designer in a whole other depepartment that reviewed that bra two years later and said i came up with the idea. The head of the companyay not is there some way you can go because i know so many people, they have these ideas, they dontt knowhere to go. Is there somewhere they can go. Of course, you can go to an attorney which i highly suggest but a ust United States trademark ustpo. Uspto. Thats my dyslexia kicki inin yeah, thats where you would go d that is the government site to show pat steps and trademarks. You could do that by yourse. Its uspto. Gov. They actuay have a s section so think about thehe cost of doing these thing, you hear a lawyer and think, thats going to cost me. They actually have a part of their site where you can ask for pro bono help. That means free help from a free attorney that has been doing thesese things thats been looking at pat tenses that knows exactly whwhat you nd to put into your patent in order for it to really have weight and teeth. Who pays for the attorneys . The gornment. Whatever happened back in the days when we went to the library and we figured out how to do it thats right. All right. Very impornt advice there. I was a baby, you know, who years old yet mine followed me for the rest of my life and hit a utilityole going 70 Miles Per Hour andnd next thing you know, i was i the hospital for over 2 1 2 months . And your career was over. Yeah, pretty much at that given moment. I tried to come back and but i couldnt do it at the same level i was at b my thing is accidents happen in life and i really think im better for it. You say in your book that that crash was not an accident. Well, ive been living my life so differently at that point and i saw guys who have been playing professional sports kiss their wives and go on planes and then live a different lilife and comome back home and ago like it never happened and, look, i found ofay of justifyiying inin right. You were headed down that road. For sure and i was into drugs athe time. I was into alcohol. I was partying a lot. It tk all b a year for meo become a shell of myself. And i fought through it. Afterwards its like i truly believe that now the course im setton 0 as a man is a lot better it ever would have been in that position. You got so low in those months of recovery and you attempted suicide. Second time being the worst where i wanted everythinin to go away. I got addicted to oxycontin and tried to overdose on that and thought many people on tv wow, maybe tv could be my new passion. Just happened like that. How do you reinvent yrself going from nearly dying, nearly killing yoursel to then all of a sudden saying, aha, i can have a great life . Youou know, it took a while. It didnt justappen automatically overnight. I found a board. They helped me to have Higher Standards and surrounded myself by positivity. My outlook is so different. I take a shower in the mning and ink, i couldnt take a shower by myself so its a different perspective on life. Grateful and thankful. Every day. Youve had incredible people in your life. You write about your parents, coach k. Uhhuh. Had some great words of wisdom for you along the way. Like a second father to me. Always r rosy but i wouldldt have it any other way. Y. Hats the most important thing h h taught you. Probably to move on to the next play. You know, when i was a freshman i used to turn the ball over all the time and used toring one negative play into the other and thats very much similar to life, righ my sdechts, i was able to get over it because i had to think what is the next play of my life and i cant bring all this depression into all the positive thgs coming to me. Whats your nextig goal. Hopefully doing what you do. I see you and robin on air. George i i killing it. Hopefully that willle the next step oneday. So tell mebout where you are right now i your fe. Atat is so amazing. The concept of this album if you dont knono this is acting is these are all songs youve written for other artists, youre a terrific writer and these were for rihanna and all these artists who didnt choose them . A couple of them i wrote and kept for myself and even one i took back actually because i liked it. Which one is that. Space between. Who was it supposed to be. Rihna and i asked if she didnt mind and she didnt. Shes a cool gal. I love i was feelingng it. Suddenly had sellers remor. I understand. I understand. I have the same problem with antiques. This is bigger and more important. Recycling. These songs meant something to you. U. It feels like a good experiment if im right because i felt like they were good songs but nobody was picking up on them and i thought, well, i have this im in this luxury position where i can just experiment. I dont have to be successful cause im alrea making money from all of tir pop songsm writing so i can afford to experimentnt withh my own uff. I think the eeriment paid off. Nice work. Number one. Such an iconic look. Why so important to shield your face . Oh, i mean its just its for fun and for privacy. Like ive been working aund new york this whole time. I dont need security detail.
