Does that collection of information remain a very sensitive topic. Its really, nobody wants to grant permission to give away their personal viewing ability. Right. If it happens incidentally, that is what it is. That is interesting. No one wants to give away information. When it comes to the security programs, it seems like no one asks for permission to do it, whether its nsa monitoring your emails. They just do it. When it becomes public, politicians have to explain it or avoid it. But in those cases where there is a problem. If somewhere were out there taking pictures of a bridge or a facility, would you make the report on that . Somebody called, we talk to him immediately. There is this guy there regularly, and we would probably set up to see if we could not find the person. That has been the case when we get pictures. Usually sometimes they might be a voyeur or something and that is relatively benign. We had the case recently of the guy that cased our federal reserve, believed security was too tight and was an fbi undercover who went over to blow up a bank in oakland. He was arrested. Do you pass that information on to the fbi . If you get a report of suspicious activity in. We do. We have terrorism Liaison Officers at all of the stations, they pass information to the fbi and our jttf has top secret clearance and they sit with the fbi and any information that would be something that we might be able to keep San Francisco safer when we put measures in place. Grand theft auto 5 earned over 1 billion in sales in three days. The new game allows players to assume the role of gangster committing almost any crime imaginable. Bank robberies, car theft and murder. You can never really be a criminal. So when youre all of these characters who are just insane criminals who rob banks and steal cars, its like a fun experience. Its just a game to have fun with just to play and that is it. For me at least it is. Grand theft auto made almost twice as much as the last harry potter movie did in its opening weekend. Sales could jump higher if the Company Releases a version of the game new gaming consoles coming out in november. Is this a good example of the gaming culture right now . And this morning, we talked with game spot managing editor and i asked him what is the target audience for this game. This game is marketed for adults. As we heard, since it made 1 billion in just three days, its obviously not just aimed at what you would call the core gaming community. Grand theft auto 5 is one of those rare games that actually has a lot of impact in mainstream culture, so this is targeted at a wide variety of people. Obviously not kids, though. We mentioned the fact that there is violence in this game. If its not targeted to kids, kids, however, are playing it. Probably in pretty big numbers. So, what does the gaming industry think or say about the idea that although this is supposedly targeting adults week have a lot of teens and kids playing it. Representing the gaming industry and the industry body, the Electronic Software association has a lot of information about this and they have done a lot of studies into the sort of the impacts of violence and gaming. There is a lot more information that they can probably provide, but just generally, this is a mature rated time, so this is supposed to be played by no one under the age of 17. The reality is that it may not be that case but, you know, its up to, i guess, parents at the end of the day to police this. Its industry, interesting this gaming industry that has evolve side huge. Its huge and the next most popular game is call for duty black ops. Call of duty black ops. Thats right. Which is also a violent game. Its a military shooter. So, what is it that what are they trying to sell in terms of entertainment . The thrill of the kill . There is obviously a lost, you know, enjoyment to come out of the games and were talking about specifically grand theft auto 5. What it presents to players is a huge world in much you can do a wide variety of activities. So, over and above all of the action and gun play, it presents a little mini version of the real world in this so there is, you know, you can go on to a fake internet in the game. Go on to fake facebook, you can see movies, you can play the stock market and go on triathlons. So the appeal for grand theft auto specifically, really, is, you know, the fact that youre living in this hyperreal world. Lets go on that living idea. Sometimes we hear reports after shootings that someone was obsessed with video games. How long do people play these games for . When you go in, and you assume this alter reality, how long does the average person stay there for . In this game, in particular, there is many, many hours of game play. Because its what we call in the industry, a sandbox game where once youre done with the actual main story line, there is lots of other activities that you can do. Why do you think that call of duty, grand theft auto so outsells things like sports like madden and football . Why, what is making them so popular . What does it say about us as a society . I dont know if it vastly outsells it. If you look at the top 10 games sold every year, half of those will be, as you mentioned, sports titles like madden and games like mario are high in terms of sales rankings. So, what it says, i think, about the industry is that its broad and its varied and particularly gaming. The prime example is of grand theft auto, of course, because it makes a lot of money and gets attention. There is more in the spectrum that is games. Coming up, the gun control debate heats up in california. Our Political Insider on the proposal to stop gun shows at the palace. ,,,,,,, Southern California college honored form gabrie. New this morning, a Southern California college honored former congresswoman gabrielle give orders last night. The Ellen Browning scripps medal highlights women who have made it possible for others to live more confidently, courageously and hopefully. She graduated from Scripps College in 1993 and is known nationwide for her resilience in the face of violence against the former arizona lawmaker. She was shot in the head in tucson in 2011 and continues to recover. Shes a leading advocate for new gun control laws. Governor jerry brown is looking at more than a dozen of these type of bills on his desk right now and that is why we went to the San Francisco police chief and former state Assembly Speaker willie brown. The first question is the debate on how many of these bills are substantive and how many are political showpieces. He took a look at them all and we asked what he saw in the collection. Think some of the good ones are those prohibited persons or with mental illness, far more controlled in the home on whether or not they could be available. They go back to trying to keep the guns out of the guy like adam lanza who had guns in the home and went and did the newtown, connecticut, shooting and other things like strengthening the assault weapons ban. Since its a ban to make it stronger and smart and we dont see assault weapons in california. I dont see a use for them. Would you sign off . D ones i read, i probably would. Why . No, i just think that were a state that, right up until new york, enacted the tightest gun controls after their webster, connecticut, event, we have the tightest weapons laws in the country. So to tighten up our laws more strict, i dont think its a bad thing. We still have plenty of guns in california. California has all of the controls but neighboring nevada, arizona, and oregon dont. Yo there is a rub. We had the big shooting in maryland, i mean in washington, d. C. , and then we had another in a park in chicago. I mean its crazy. Ill tell you, i draw the analogy all the time. You come across the border at lake tahoe, they want to know if youre bringing in fruits or vegetables and they want to know what you bought at the gun show. Doesnt make sense to me. And one of the bills on the governors desk is by governor mark [ indiscernible ] to allow restrictions to allow gun shows at the cow palace. Substantive or she . Substantive. Believe me. If you cant conveniently acquire a weapon and the situation in much the rules and regulations are not strictly enforced, not strictly respected, that is substantive. Gun shows provide people with that kind of an opportunity. There is a ton of people that think the cow palace is in San Francisco. We had 10 homicides last june in the Public Housing complex across the street. So, to not have a gun show across the street where i had 10 homicides last june, that works for me. And do you think they were committed by someone going to the gun so shoe . Im hot not saying that. That is what were trying to inifer, right . I disagree. You have to understand that just the environment of convenience of guns makes people use them more conveniently. So if there is a gun not a gun show, you may not have the whole kind of gun mentality that people develop. It sort of takes the a cross state lines to the county level. Right . And its sort of like making daly city than nevada to california. And there is also, of course, the other issue of people getting guns illegally. Right. And doesnt matter j. And there is will the issue of the laws there in front of the governor that lawmakers in sacramento want to say to the nation. Washington didnt do gun control so we in california will lead the way. You think the nation wants to listen to california . So far they arent. Coming up. A last look at the mornings top stories. And that includes a standoff happening in a mall in kenya.
