Officials used specially trained dogs to search the rubble. Live look now. All the work going on on the new bay bridge. Its been a busy weekend. A short time ago a project spokesperson said the heavy lifting projects are essentially done. Most of the paving work is finished. Now crews are focused on cleaning and lane striping as well as installing the temporary bike path. Things are moving along. That is expected to be open by, if not before, Tuesday Morning at 5 00 so we turn to randy who has been with the project since the get go. Our first question is, okay, this has been near 24 years an undertaking. Engineering, politics, finances rolled together. What are some of the lessons weve learned . One lesson learn asked that we in california want to save on almost everything. That comes at a cost. That cost is money and time. While i do think the process itself lends to a better project when were done, in many cases, all sorts of public projects, this one tern turned out to be an extreme. We had votes of the public to put rail back on the bridge even though there isnt rail service on either side. Another example of the positive. There was a long discussion about putting a bike path. I think the bike path ended up being a good idea. Its set a standard for the future. If were going to build a big project, bikes are going to be part of that. A big street and corridor in your community is going to be able to have access for bikes. But can we accommodate everybodys desires . We keep parceling off things. Different special interest groups. A bridge, roadway, new social program. It does add to the cost. Thats one of the big lessons here. In the old days a project engineer had enough power to tear down a city to build a freeway. Thats just not acceptable any more. But i dont think the kind of thing we had to go through to get one bridge built and it takes 23 years. That itself is not acceptable. A lot of it was political. Yes, it was. It was deciding what kind bridge for a while there was talk if we should have a bridge. In hindsight, must be a head scratcher. One of the most interesting experiences to have to go through. Particularly the crisis of the funding. What takes projects a long time is to build the money in order to build it. In this project, you have to go through the political process to do it again. There was the thought that you could somehow change it and save money. Instead of coming to the real issue which is you need more money, the estimates are wrong, where she to complete it. It took years of hand wringing to say well, maybe we can safe money and do it differently. Back to our subject of the day. The bay bridge live look right now at the toll plaza. Always looks eerie. This morning a project spokesperson said the heaviest tasks are wrapping up like the partial demolition of the old span. Main work now involves cleaning and lane striping. The new bridge is still set to open by Tuesday Morning at 5 00 a. M. So we turn to metropolitan transportation spokesperson. We asked, some of the people felt we took aria eye off the ball. The new bridge was supposed to be for a safety issue but instead it became an issue. Everything but getting cars across that span quickly and safely. Look, i think that is true. I think one of the hard parts that this project gave to everyone was this idea that you were going to spend a great deal of money but not get a whole lot for it. You werent going to get more lanes of traffic. You werent going to solve congestion. Part of that was people wanted something more. They wanted a statement on the bay. I also think the uniqueness of the bay, we wanted to build something that was better than its natural environment. That turned out to be one of the reasons with he so many arguments. Often asked to me, could we build the Golden Gate Bridge today . If you read the story was a tough one as well. Hi they had arguments. They said it could be done. The cost went up too high. But there was a core that were going to get it done in those days. There was this notion that were going to build big things. Too hesitant. Were afraid of having this kind of a long process and perhaps in this case a process that just wore everyone out. That is a question. The bolts, the welds. This has been a topic of conversation for months. Is this something you think is affecting Public Confidence right now . Yes, it is. What we had was a bridge that took something that took 24 years to build. A good portion of that was building. This wasnt easy. You would think that we had earthquake damaged bridge, fix it, replace it. It wasnt good enough. The idea of just a straight bridge. They wanted something spectacular. It is really beautiful. Beauty comes at a price. It doesnt come cheap. Getting engineering done is a different question. Back in the depression when money was tight, we managed to get the Golden Gate Bridge, which is both beautiful and sound and in great shape, done. We got the western span of the bay bridge done. But then the joke was they did the golden gate, the western span and then they didnt have too much money leftover so they did the eastern span and now were replacing it. Too many cooks in the kitchen it seems like. Ive talked to some of the cooks and they go it was way too much. But they also said look, if this bridge is going to be here for the next hundred years, maybe we should have spent the money. Its okay to have done this. Now after we do it all and we spend all this kind of money and you get the bentley of bridges and the bolts start snapping, then the thing started to take a dive. Now were going to try to pull it out. I dont know if they can. We are where we are. Well just enjoy the beautiful bridge which is gorgeous. Its so cool. It could be so cool that theyre asking people not to spend too much time looking while theyre driving. The gawking factor is youre going to be so taken away with the views youll hit the brakes. But by all accounts, even with the bad welds, things should be safe on the bay bridge. That is the best. Ultimately that this is one of the safest bridges youre going to find. Only time and a quake will tell. All right. Coming up one more look at this mornings top stories. Whats in a name . One of americas best known brands is 110 years old. Take a look at the celebration coming up. ,,,,,,,, wo to get welcome back. Heres a look at this mornings top stories.
