Lets look at the pictures that we shot late last night. The former Neighborhood Watch volunteer acquitted of Second Degree murder in the death of Treyvon Martin. Those are shots from oakland. The police say around 100 people were in the streets and did damage to local businesses there overnight, windows broken, garbage cans set on fire. There were no arrests in oakland, and no injuries reported as well. The jury in florida reached the verdict after 15 hours of deliberations over two days. Cbs 4s molly hall has the latest from the courthouse in florida. Reporter George Zimmerman walked out of the courtroom minutes after hearing this. We the jury find George Zimmerman not guilty. Reporter at first, he showed no emotion to the verdict. Moments later, he smiled. His family hugged and his wife shed tears. Treyvon martins parents, who were in court every day for the trial, did not attend the verdict and on twitter, his father said he was heartbroken and wrote, i will always love my baby trey. Outside of the courthouse, demonstrators voiced their displeasure with the verdict. 3,000 miles away there were demonstrations on the streets in San Francisco and los angeles. In oakland, california, a small group of protestors block traffic and smash the window of the police car and demonstrators tell us plans are being made for more protests the coming days. Its tragic. Last year, martin left the Convenience Store and is walking to the home where he was staying. Zimmerman, a member of the Neighborhood Watch saw him and minutes later, they came face toface. He claimed the teen attacked them and shot in selfdefense. We arek sattic with the results. George zimmerman was never guilty of anything but protecting himself. Reporter prosecutors argued zimmermans actions led to martins death, but the jury found him not guilty. Marlie hall for cbs news, sanford, florida. And a civil suit or civil rights case against zimmerman are still possibilities. Martins family could foil a civil suit to try to hold him liable for negligence or the federal government could prove that zimmerman violated martins civil rights and the initial reaction to the verdict was peaceful in the bay area. And that is right. In oakland, they gathered at Franco Gallo Plaza at city hall and gathered around the small shrine for martin. They told us they were frustrated, hurt, and angry. Disgusted. Absolutely disgusted. I mean its clear cut murder. And for however many long before they decided to put a bullet. Rage, not surprised. In pain, in pain for his family, for his community. Pain, deep, deep pain. And rage. It has to end. There was a protest in San Francisco where officers escorted demonstrators as they marched through the mission district. That group was disbursed by 10 00 p. M. Off of the sidewalk and into the street. In the nations capitol, hundreds marched after the not guilty verdict was announced and demonstrated in the northwest section of washington. The police said officers in protective gear on standby. The crowd chanted phrases like no justice, no peace. More protests are possible in d. C. Today. Police have identified the suspect in fridays deadly shooting of a San Francisco Jewelry Store. The 22yearold barry white of antioch is charged with two counts of murder, seven counts of attempted murder. Kpix5s don knapp talks with neighbors about the tragedy. I have gotten two phone calls almost simultaneously. Reporter her husband was one of scores of customers who hunkered down in the shops inside the gift center and jewelry mart after fridays shooting left two women dead. One was from my daughter telling me there was a shooting at my husbands building and the other was my husband just letting me know there was a shotting and that he was okay. The suspect then exited and went eastbound on the 800 block of brennan where he was engaged by three Police Officers responding with shots fired call. He produced a revolver, fired upon the officers. Reporter the chief said the suspect ran into a restaurant and continued shooting. Before police returned fire, he threw down his gun and surrendered. Reporter the man shot is hospitalized in stable condition. The Restaurant Owner told us police asked them not to talk. A crew is cleaning up the crime scene. Of the Jewelry Store inside the building. The talks said that it was about the murder victims. He refers to the women as the girls. Everybody was praying for the girls. Nobody was talking about anything else about the girls. We know the girls are pretty sweet people. Reporter chavo and other merchants were locked out of the stores but for a few minutes to retrieve merchandise. He met murphy and mcgwire by appointment at the curb with a sample wedding band. Had no idea what happened. What happened. You know, were kind of shocked as well. We have no idea. Robbery doesnt appear to be the motive. In San Francisco, an illegal left turn is blamed for a crash involving a lightrail train. It happened around 1 yesterday afternoon at third street and efans avenue. A van and a mini train were travelling on third street when Authorities Say the van turned in front of the train. Nearly 20 people were injured and none of those injuries is considered life threatening. The name of the third teenager who died from last weeks plane crash at the San Francisco airport has been released. The Chinese State media said she died of her injuries on friday. She had been in intensive care at San Francisco General Hospital since the day of the crash. And yesterday, survivors and the families of the other two girls killed attended a memorial in the honor. They gathered at the site of the deadly crash. As a solemn ceremony honoring the victims of the crash took place, off in the distance, today is asiana flight 214 from seoul to San Francisco landed safely on runway 28 last, which reopened last night. Standing on the shore facing the runway were the families of two of the High School Girls killed in the crash. And we gather together to pray for the victims of the airline crash. That is what the officers did and the firefighters and i think the pilots and the flight attendants. And how do you, when you going in, how do you assess whether the moves youre making are the right ones or they could lead to further tragedy . For example, a lot of questions raised about the response times for ambulances. Did they get out on that runway fast enough . Right. Well, you know, for, then again, i have had to call for him before as a Police Officer and always seems longer than it is. I can only imagine what it feet lick to those people to wait however minutes they had to wait. You have to remember all of those ambulances are waiting to get in the game, too. Thirwilling to risk their lives to come on the airfield and someone has to be up above to make sure because they want the ambulances, too. So what delayd . You have to make sure its safe and make sure that no other planes are going to land on an ambulance or what is the combustibility of the plane that is now on fire and smells of gasoline. There are so many things that everyones thinking of. The number one, we have to save these people. And how much does luck play into it . Well, you know there is that old saying you would rather be lucky than good. Its good to be lucky and on that day, everybody was great and lucky. And in the months that follow, what tends to happen with the first responders. Do they go over this . Do they judge themselves . And how does it work . You in the media are going to go over this thing and months and years and they will decide what should have been done in a vacuum. But those officers and firefighters and everyone at the airport and the crew that they have had to decide in seconds. So, were going to read the papers and watch the stories and everyones in debriefings, the Response Team debriefings now. I think people when you saw the officers talk and the firefighters talk, its just a huge amount of emotion and this is cool they getting the acknowledgment and there is folks criticizing them in the days and months to come. And that is going to be one. Right. And that is an example of a tragic moment. All of the firefighters, they did ray a great job and they got the fire out. They the cops and the crew and passengers got everyone off and we dont know exactly what happened other than at least one truck passed over the young girl when she was under the foam. We dont know if that was the only time and that is being reconstructed and figured out and all of those drivers of all of those trucks are wondering. On this, what do you think your take away memory is on this one . I think its the smell of the gasoline that day. You had to be there to smell it. Even when the mayor came through. The smell was so strong and just, i think, that when was talking to the cops and firefighters, they were on the plane. And they smell smoke and whatever. And going up . They feel the plane, unsteady under their feet and stayed and Jim Cunningham has a presence of mind to scoop up iphones and cell phones in case later on, people will call about the loved ones. The presence of mind to me is just and that is unbelievable. And sounds like we may never know what happened as far as the fire truck. I feel sorry for the driver of the truck. The driver may not know. Their chances to equal it and they backed up over and didnt so. It goes to show in the situations, yes, we in the media and the public tend to jump to the heros or villains very quickly. The things went right or they didnt, and we didnt want to have heros or assign blame quickly and in these situations, you had them working both. And that is hard to prepare for that. The december date was based on the time as a fix. Our independence review panel of experts has been saying this bridge is so much safer than the old bridge. We need to move traffic on the web as soon as possible and in the meantime, caltranswas worried about the safety of the being during the construction process. And to crack the bridge. And so they, in the meantime, on monday, our expectation was we would not be able to open it until december when that was said, but our independent peer reviewer said lets look at the plan and the idea of doing temporary shims that will enable the bridge to reach safety. And that was a surprise to us. And if were able to move people on to that bridge, that is what we have. And if it was a joyous surprise, i didnt see a lot of smiles. Or brought up out of the blue. The reaction after the last few days have looked really thinking about the idea of being able to get people on to the bridge sooner. I think that is what is important go about it. At this point, we dont know and we asked the federal Highway Administration to review the plan and engineers are looking looking at the plans to reach it. Are we going ahead and looking at the idea of a quicker fix . Anded with afternoon, after the meeting, the toll Bridge Oversight Committee got together and started talking to engineers to say, all right, lets look at the plan on friday and we sent the letter to the federal Highway Administration and engineers are looking at that plan. And there is a lot of work to be know. Done. How long do you think it will take one way or another . And that is what i dont know. The plan needs to have a thorough caltransengineers, as well as independent engineers to review it and make sure this is a plan that can work. And if, again, going back to the meetings and politics.
