Bay bridge and theres the spectacular new eastern span and really good news tonight. The first full day of work is finished, construction right on schedule and they are heading for that opening day on tuesday at 5 a. M. Tonight be surprised if they decide to open it up a couple hours early because things are going well tonight. Christen ayers was on the upper deck tonight. It really looks like everythings on schedule. Reporter yeah, ken, tonight, officials confirming to me they are definitely on track to wrap all of this up on deadline. And if you look behind me, you can see what im talking about. Tonight, you see the buzz of trucks up and down the approach to the toll plaza, flashing lights, you see workers out here hard at work. Theyre on a paving project. They finished grinding asphalt and an entire new roadway is being installed, as well as an entire drainage system. This will continue aroundtheclock in this area along with another massive project on the actually bridge. We went up and saw that today. What youre looking at is the destruction of 1,000 feet of roadway that people were still driving on just last night. Those massive machines you see are ripping up the roadway because of blocking crews from finishing the bike path thatll run along the eastern side of the bay bridge. Earlier this evening we got another unique perspective of what drivers will see as they pull on to the new eastern span driving east from San Francisco. For the first time were getting a closeup look just how close the old bridge is to the new one. The old one, very closed off. This one going eastbound opens up into that beautiful view of the extension span. Reporter and taking a wider look of the construction going on at this time, its just a maze of moving parts. Officials are telling us up to 400 workers out here at any given time. Theyre making good progress. Cal trans is saying they believe they will make that deadline and things are kind of humming along. Youve got an awesome look at whats going on. Unfortunately, people cant do that until Tuesday Morning. Theyll see the effects of the construction thats going on. Thank you, kristen. Reporter the bridge obviously forcing people to use other ways around the city. Some of using bridges, bart, fer ferries. A lot of people had to deal with backups on freeways and bridges, as well. Of course the set way will be a lot different tomorrow morning when people have to get up and go back to work. He has since posted bail and was released. Concord police started investigating the relationship between hastings and the teen earlier this month. The call for a 15 an hour minimum wage would significantly impact job creation in the restaurant industry, a doubling of the minimum wage. Theyre actually painting the bridge on that side. The towers are being scraped, painted, all the cables are being painted, and take a look at this, some video of the rumble strips coming out of the ground. They actually ground them down. Youre going to miss that wonderful sound as your tires went over the rumble strips. They are no longer there. Theyve been completely ground down.
