It's Morning Edition from n.p.r. News I'm Noel King and I'm Steve Inskeep we're going to introduce you now to one of the people at the center of the House impeachment inquiry Gordon Sunderland is testifying before House investigators he is the u.s. Ambassador to the European Union up to now the country is known him for a single text message in that message to another diplomat he defended President Trump's involvement in Ukraine he said there was no quid pro quo in the president's requests from Ukrainian officials in prepared testimony Simon says more he says that text message just conveyed what President Trump told him he says he did know the president wanted a probe of a political rival Joe Biden So who is Gordon sunlit on this dramatic day Rachel Martin takes a long look Gordon Sandland has an important job he is the u.s. Ambassador to the European Union Here's a bit of a video he made with his family introducing him after he was named my family is the most important thing to me we spend a lot of time together we travel together I grew up here in Portland Oregon and I'm very excited about their Chandy to spend more time in a new and specifically in Brussels I we did this introductory video because the u.s. Ambassador to the e.u. Is not really a position that makes someone a household name know what has elevated Gordon saw and into the public consciousness is something that wasn't part of his original job an assignment that put him on the ground in Ukraine and it's the reason he's testifying today the day after that now infamous call between President Trump and President Selenski Gordon Sandlin spoke with Ukrainian t.v. Here the u.s. Ambassador to the e.u. But you've been spending a great deal of time in Kiev Why is that well President Trump as not only honored me with the job of being the u.s. Ambassador to the e.u. But he's also given me other special assignments details are emerging about those special assignments this week we learned from testimony that Acting White House. Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney pushed out the diplomats who had been in charge of Ukraine policy and he put 3 other people at the helm instead who apparently gave themselves a nickname Here's someone again on Ukrainian t.v. We have what are called the 3 Amigos and the 3 Amigos are Secretary Perry again Ambassador Volker and myself and we've been tasked with sort of overseeing the Ukraine us relationship between our contacts at the highest levels of the us government and now the highest levels of Ukrainian government in that same interview Sunland said that he spoke to President Trump just a few minutes before he placed that call to Zelinsky although in his testimony today minimizes that conversation he says it was short and not substantive his now famous text messages came a month and a half later that's when he denied that there was any quid pro quo in President Trump's conversation with President Saleh he was sure in his denial he says because he clarified the issue personally with President Trump the phrase quid pro quo has now become a sort of shorthand to describe this entire debacle but it's a phrase Gordon son uses himself to explain his own negotiating philosophy here he is describing at a business breakfast in Portland back in 2016 how he used to facilitate phone calls between the former Democratic governor of Oregon and President George w. Bush we would make these requests and they were done quietly they were done with rifle precision and there was always a quid pro quo the governor would help the president with something and the president help the governor was something and it was very transactional transactional was a word I heard a lot when asking friends and former colleagues about Gordon some land so was pragmatic as a hotel developer type in g.o.p. Circles working in a liberal Portland Oregon someone had to figure out how to work with a lot of people he didn't agree with I clicked books on wine bottles and Gordon among other things who works relationships this is David Nierenberg. He got to know someone when they both worked as fundraisers for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign back in 2012 he and others said that back then it was pretty clear son then wanted to hitch his wagon to a candidate who could make him an ambassador preferably to a German speaking country sons Jewish parents fled Germany during World War 2 They ended up in Washington State and open a dry cleaning business it's a story Sandlin has recently started telling a lot I am the 1st in my family that was born in the u.s. My parents were both European immigrants I started and it was a mistake Nazi Germany that was the beginning of the uprising of Hitler when I was able to escape my father was smuggled out of Germany before things got bad soon guns their freedom and my sister Lucy found fortunate permanent refuge in Seattle Washington David Nuremberg told me son saw an ambassadorship as a way to square the circle of his family's legacy as some kind of symbolic justice that's not uncommon among the people I know. Through this experience to want to have relationships to powerful people in government because let's face it almost anyone who either personally survived or whose parents or grandparents survived the Holocaust did so because of the intervention of someone who who helped them and you think you think that explains Gordon Sunland support of President Trump. Well I think. It was a process though Stalin supported Trump and then he didn't support him and then Trump became the nominee and Stalin went all in and made a $1000000.00 donation to Trump's Inaugural Committee he still had his eyes on the prize a European ambassador post and jobs like that are often doled out to top donors but someone made the donation quietly through 4 separate entities Lenneberg Steen spent a decade working as a consultant for Sunland he helped him push back against a big convention center hotel in Portland he also observed him as he made political alliances around the state bird scene says Sandlin is not an a.t.l. Lagi is a political pragmatist and he would ally himself with whomever could help him achieve his dream posting in Europe it was a chance he'd tried to kind of ride the Romney horse into that position he tried to be involved in the Jeb Bush campaign and here was his kind of like his ticket to the ball here and I think with Trump a saw a chance to do it good afternoon it's an honor to appear before you as the president's nominee to serve as the United States ambassador to the European Union Fast forward 15 months and 26 days and now today Ambassador Gordon songlines has been subpoenaed to testify before Congress I asked Lenneberg Steen if you understand who saw Lynn is at his core would you describe in a someone who has a strong moral compass or a clearly defined code of ethics. I've been thinking about that I'm not sure I'm able to kind of answer that I didn't really never asked me to go over and he lines he was someone who not was looking to kind of bend the rules necessarily but was trying to bend the narrative trying to make sure that he if he could tell his his story in his way he would when Berg Steen then told me his own story about working with someone it goes back to that convention center hotel project they were trying to hold up. So many years when it finally did get resolved Burge seen says Simon got some property out of the deal but it wasn't enough for him someone wanted city leaders to draft a statement saying that he was a quote pillar of the community and he did when I think back to that process the closing of a very contentious battle in Portland Gordon was 1st and foremost interested in his own reputation Thursday is going to be I think that pillar of the community kind of moment that I think Gordon is looking for when he can kind of like to find himself and the narrative so that in fact he doesn't get played as a as a bit part villain being manipulated by some others I have a sense of profound sadness for Gordon and for his family that he finds himself in a situation David Nierenberg tells me he was in touch with us on the e-mail just a couple weeks ago I said to him in so many words please remember that Richard Nixon did not lose the presidency because of the break in at the d.n.c. Richard Nixon lost the presidency because of 2 years of lying about it and trying to cover it up and so my advice to Gordon was if there's anything about which you feel 2020 hindsight uncomfortable then by all means be truthful about it if politic about it and make things right because you've got decades of life ahead of you and the response I got was basically Thank you for your email you've always given me great advice. And Steve today we're going to see if someone takes that advice yeah his story does seem to have changed though from that simple no quid pro quo that he put in that text message rich so what is different now according to his prepared remarks is that he's saying if there was a quid pro quo of some kind he didn't know anything about it he says he was on the phone call between Trump and Selenski and in all the readouts that he got out of that call the summaries that people sent out the White House sends out he didn't see any reference to Joe or Hunter Biden in any of that so he felt perfectly fine defending the president in those text messages he says that tackling Ukrainian corruption it's always been part of his portfolio and that grease mother energy company that where $100.00 Biden has served on the board he says that's a natural part of his portfolio but again he maintains that he never even knew the Hunter Biden sat on that board which would mean he hadn't seen news reports about it and that he hadn't heard Rudy Giuliani talking about it incessantly as early as last spring trying to explain why when he said no quid pro quo he was in his version just repeating the president's words not stating his own actual knowledge exactly you mentioned Rudy Giuliani does he talk about Rudy Giuliani in his prepared remarks well he doesn't it's clear when you read it that he is trying to distance himself from the president's personal lawyer he says at one point the President Trump did ask him to talk directly to Giuliani about concerns about Ukrainian corruption in general and someone says that in that conversation Giuliani Giuliani actually brought up the 26000 election specifically including the d.n.c. Server which as you know is at the center of a widely disputed conspiracy theory Giuliani also brought up and noted these as 2 issues he wanted Ukraine to investigate someone says he didn't want to work with Giuliani but President Trump gave him no other choice Steve there's one thing that's important to note here there's an inconsistency in someone's prepared remarks he says that in late July 21000 ambassadors Bowker and Taylor and I quoting now exchanged e-mails in which we all agreed Zelinsky should have no involvement in presidential elections he maintains he didn't know anything about it so that's a question that lawmakers are going to want to put to him today Ok thanks for your reporting Rachel Martin really appreciate it you're welcome. News I'm Steve Inskeep and I'm Noel King good morning 2000000 people which is nearly a 3rd of Hong Kong's population marched in peaceful opposition to an extradition bill with China back in June now those protests have continued but not always peacefully not everyone in Hong Kong supports them there have been counter protests there have been attacks on activists some people support Beijing N.P.R.'s Beijing correspondent Emily fang went to a probation district in Hong Kong. Why is closer to the border with mainland China than it is to the glittering hustle and bustle of Hong Kong Island it's one of the so-called indigenous villages in the city's new territories a northern region that makes that more than 85 percent of Hong Kong's land mass indigenous villages are populated by people whose ancestral roots predate Chinese Communist Party rule British colonial rule even the Ching empire which lease the new territories to the British an 898 their peaceful enclaves an urban Hong Kong except on the night of July 21st. Dozens of white should assailants attacked protesters trapped inside a metro station near here that night injuring at least 45 then the assailants fled here to the village of Nam peen y. Which has long had links to organized crime the assault fueled speculation in a city already paranoid about mainland Chinese interference that they drink is directing opposition to the protests. A local restaurant owner who was serving me lunch gave me a pointed warning you need to be careful here she told me if you're not suggest you look for those gangsters on a recent day reporting in the village I was told repeatedly to leave for my own safety I don't want you guys. He saying you are not welcome this is Paul a 68 year old resident of Nampa and why his grandparents were poor farmers His parents had odd jobs to send him to university in Canada but Paul always knew he would come back he seen the world that has made him fiercely protective of his homeland like everyone we spoke to he refused to give a full name because of fear of reprisals from protesters. Come to my house. Polls as the attacks in July 21st in the were not orchestrated by gangs they were family clans descending their centuries old villages just like they did against pirates hundreds of years ago and the British during an armed rebellion called the sixty's war. In 1909 the rebellion was quickly squashed but it won the villages special in rights they still enjoy today now they say Hong Kong's protesters who smashed doors and graffiti homes are the ones threatening their way of life so what you can you do when somebody come to your house I want to. Are you going to just sit there waiting to happen well we're not we're not to be. Pain why isn't the district in new territories West who are presented by lawmaker Junius ho the most well known advocate of a growing pro China movement in Hong Kong video from the night of July 21st shows host shaking hands with some of the white shirt assailants who attacked protestors Wong another local resident of nonpaying y. Supports Ho and the attackers we're going to. Believe. We were handed back in 1970 Hong Kong is China the whole world recognizes this reality but one says his district is probate not because they love the Chinese Communist Party it's because they fear it. And if they wanted to the Chinese Communist Party could crush us we are a piece of cake then Hong Kong's jobs transportation systems its rule of law it would all crumble argues that's why he supports Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lamb's decision to invoke emergency powers that allow her to pass any security measure and she deems is in the public interest tens of thousands marched peacefully against the measure because they fear further erosion of civil liberties not long in ending why. I didn't break or should I care about emergency powers but why is also a village divided in the last 2 decades newcomers have moved into the indigenous villages they're seeking more space lower rents and they're bringing with them different political viewpoints Here's Kong in 1000 year old student he was born and raised here. Pedro people think that. We are all violent and pro-government and that's a misconception there are many people living in this village who support the protests to attend rallies those divisions in the village are why one resident named songs that people need to remain independent of what goes on in Hong Kong. I believe that we have to stand on our own we should not blindly follow one side or the other most of all it's on Muse's residents just wish to be left alone both by Hong Kong hers and by Beijing Emily Fang n.p.r. News I'm Steve Inskeep and I'm Noel King Congressman Elijah Cummings has died the Maryland Democrat represented his Baltimore district in the House of Representatives for more than 20 years he was a very important voice for civil rights and in recent months he rose to prominence as one of the leaders of Democratic efforts to investigate the trumpet ministration Here he is talking to Steve Inskeep about in Amalia minutes prob in 2017 Let me tell you something I'm going to press on with everything I've got because literally I lose sleep over this I'm on the line now with Cheryl and I feel she's president of the end Legal Defense and Educational Fund Good morning Miss eyeful Good morning you new Congressman Cummings So I imagine this is a hard day for you what's on your mind. I'm thinking a lot about what he represented a very particular kind of leadership 1st and foremost what it moved to Baltimore. You know logic coming so it's really a son of Baltimore and he loved this town and people in Baltimore could relate to him could relate to his life story. And he really was a moral force in the community people trusted him and unrest after Freddy Gray was killed it was the lies to come in to can walk into the crowd and be recognized and have people respond to him and so I think what the country has seen of him over the last year is a reflection of what many of us here in Baltimore have known for the 20 years that his leadership. A man of tremendous tremendous integrity. He met and everything earlier today on social media humility was an important part of his presentation of himself always talked about his humble beginning it was impossible to hear a beach from allies a coming whether at a commencement or any oks and without hearing him talk about his mother that that was important to him to continue to present in that way and to be an example of what your life can become. But he also had a very clear commitment to justice and the truth and I think that's what many Americans that's seen a team in his oversight committee leadership over the past 2 years his dog and commitment to the truth but also his ability to marry that with a kind of humanity in never lost sight of that when you engage with allies are coming at you with a human being that he responded to you with a human being even if viscerally opposed your politics he was still able to respond and to receive someone as a human being. It's just an extraordinary extraordinary person you know really quickly it all it took 7 a few months ago as you know President to President Trump called the congressman's Baltimore district a quote a rodent infested mess and Congressman Cummings was really really passionate when he came out and he defended that city and its citizens let me play a clip of that as a country we finally must say that even off is enough that we are dying with the hate for rhetoric that we are dying with the mass shootings that we are dying and what the white supremacy is the message cherish what you're rising in our country and fighting against everything America stands for really strong words there how important was it that he spoke up for Baltimore and by extension he really spoke up for black urban neighborhoods around the country that have been targeted by this kind of rhetoric to. It was very important you know I talk about allies coming to have fun of Baltimore he was very proud of Baltimore proud of his leadership but as a representation honest about the challenges that we face that are that he would always there for the real substantive solution that would make a difference we had an opportunity to work with him a number of times the legal defense fund challenging housing discrimination co-hosting a town hall on policing reform working on the effort to try to bring rapid transit to black communities in Baltimore the red light of that was all lies coming being willing to be front and center with pushing for transformation of the city so he was he had a clear idea about what the problems were but he was in the fixing business he was not in the rhetoric business and so it was really important to him to not back down from any challenge to the integrity of Baltimore city in the fixing business I like that you'll miss him I imagine we all will Yeah Sheryl and I full of the end Legal Defense and Educational Fund thank you so much for taking the time this morning thank you for having me the number of children and young adults dying by suicide continues to rise and a new report says the trend affects children as young as 10 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published that report here's N.P.R.'s. Sally couldn't is the statistic with the C.D.C.'s National Center for Health Statistics she and a colleague looked at deaths by suicide for 10 to 24 year olds in the 21st century and found that the rate had increased since 2007 it increased 56 percent from 2007 to 2017 for the youngest group the 10 to 14 year rules the return nearly tripled to about $500.00 suicide deaths in 2017 what's troubling says curtain is that the rise in rates for the entire group has been faster in recent years not only is trending upward but the pay. That entry is that story accelerate previous research by the c.d.c. Has shown that suicide deaths for all age groups in the u.s. Has been rising median Castillo is a psychologist at Emory University in a past president of the American Psychological Association she wasn't involved in the new research and says the new numbers aren't surprising but they were x. Stream really disturbing to see the significant increase in their e people as young as age 10 researchers don't know the reasons behind this rise suicide is complex caused by a combination of risk factors Castro says some factors are especially important for children and youth for example where there is that beaut in the home that can be a factor that really impacts children ask in substance abuse she says and the fact that most kids nowadays are growing up in communities that are not tight knit strong community ties provide a source of social support a key protective factor against suicide even if feel they are there they about yourself are hopeless and helpless that you feel loved and cared for and protect the new report shows the need for early intervention says Joe Hart of the Freedman the vice president of research at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention early intervention can be a lifetime intervention she says interventions should include teaching all kids important social and emotional skills we know that problem solving and coping strategies and help seeking when you're not feeling well are key to suicide prevention or reducing risk. News I'm Steve Inskeep and I'm Noel King good morning drug companies are trying desperately to reach a settlement on thousands of opioid lawsuits that's because they'll be in federal court on Monday in Cleveland if they don't N.P.R.'s learn that the judge handling the case has already rejected one proposed deal that was valued at about $18000000000.00 and the New York Times reported late yesterday that a new settlement proposal is now on the table it is worth as much as 50000000000 Brian Mann with North Country Public Radio covers opioid litigation for n.p.r. Good morning Brian I know so a lot up in the air here where do things stand right now yeah we know the talks are intense there is this deadline looming because of Monday's start of the trial judge Dan poster who's running the show is keeping a very tight lid on these negotiations so none of the companies involved are confirming those dollar figures what they have said is that they want to deal big drug distributors like McKesson Amerisource Bergen and Cardinal Health and also drug makers like tab and Johnson and Johnson they want some kind of global settlement at all and this seemingly endless wave of opioid lawsuits more than 2300 suits been filed Ok so they want a deal just to get out of this to get through this so far no deal not yet we've heard from attorneys representing a lot of these local governments that are suing late last night they said no deal has happened yet one wrinkle Noel is that the drug industry seems to want a lot of control over how settlement money would be spent what programs the dollars would fund and they also want to lot of the payout to come in the form of medication addiction relief drugs and product that they would give not actual cash and a lot of these companies communities I should say say they need money they've spent billions of dollars on law enforcement and rehab programs and foster care so they want money another big issue in these talks is whether or not firms will admit to any wrongdoing at the deal that we heard about last month with produce pharma they refused. Knowledge of any wrongdoing in the opioid epidemic and that failure to admit responsibility has driven some states to reject the deal all right so while these talks are underway with tens of billions of dollars on the line what is happening with this trial so far it's still moving forward all the machinery of jury selection is going on that took place yesterday and will happen again today so the pressure gets more intense day by day to reach some kind of deal before those opening arguments happen at 9 am Monday understand this is supposed to be a big test case to well I mean the trial if it goes forward would establish the full scope of the drug industry is liability for this epidemic and interestingly the judge overseeing the trial judge poster has said openly he prefers a settlement he'd like for this to get resolved why why not why not go to trial. Well I think the big thing is for everyone involved a trial equals uncertainty and a lot of risk companies that made and distributed opioids have been losing in court Johnson and Johnson lost a big civil trial this summer in Oklahoma valued at hundreds of millions of dollars and back in May a jury found executives with insists there are pure dicks guilty on criminal charges so the liability could be massive If this jury in Cleveland finds against the industry and forces that pay to clean up this opioid epidemic there's also just a lot of bad p.r. That could come from this so that's something these companies want to avoid All right Brian Mann thanks so much thank you know well Brian Mann with North Country Public Radio covers opioid litigation for n.p.r. And he will be in Ohio next week covering that trial if it goes forward will be printing the news from there. This is n.p.r. News. News I'm Steve Inskeep and I'm Noel King good morning actress Lupita Nyong'o became a household name playing Patsy in 12 Years a Slave and then Black Panther brought her worldwide fame her characters are strong and they are undeniably gorgeous but growing up as a dark skinned girl she didn't always feel beautiful Now she's written a children's book called The way about a little girl a lot like herself 5 years old I had a younger sister who was born and she was very light skinned that cooing in the Congo and her being called pretty and just there was a obvious a preference for her skin color and so that was the 1st time that I started to feel related to the word beauty the teasing started in my teenage years you know it wasn't a lifetime of teasing but it was definitely a subconscious recognition that lighter skin was better for one in the books away is very jealous of her sister and she sort of makes clear that she she wishes she could be like like her what was your relationship with your sister like I have a very very close relationship with my sister she's actually come all the way from Kenya here to just support me as this book comes out and I was always close to her I had an envy for her complection but I didn't necessarily take it out on her you know and she has such a good head on her shoulders and she never ever bought into the idea that for some reason she was more special because of the color of her skin and these things do you know it's because of the prevalence of of of whiteness you were centric standards of beauty that we experience this you know and it is subconscious colorism is the daughter of racism but sometimes it seems like racism has had a meta. You know and so that's why I wrote this to hopefully bring it to the fore and people can address it in the book so a way to. Several different ways to lighten her skin she tries a pencil eraser she tries eating foods that are all light like bananas and milk when you were a kid growing up and you were feeling this discomfort in your own skin Did you ever try to lighten your skin. Well I may have tried to raise a layer to oh I definitely think I had magination to do that but the one thing that I did do is I did pray to God to lighten my skin I was I was raised Christian and my mother and father told me that God performs miracles and I took that quite literally How old were you when you were doing that when you were praying to be later 55 so you were a little girl did your parents know you were doing that no I don't think they did my mom I think I finally opened up with to my mom about those kinds of things when I was a teenager you know and she was extremely supportive the character of mom is definitely based on my mom because she would just have none of it what gave you the courage when you were a teenager to tell your mom how you were feeling because that's an age where girls in particular often keep secrets from their parents yeah but I was I was close to my mom and my mom is very compassionate and loving and her line was You can't eat beauty is this idea that what you look like externally should not be the extent of your value that you have to work on what's coming from inside because that is the beauty that is eternal What was the school like the school where you were bully Well I went to an all girls Catholic school for the 1st 6 years of my life and when I was in the 2nd grade in that Catholic school one of my teachers said to me how are you have are going to find a husband your husband supposed to be dark at the new and so these things were happening you know these things and people don't recognize what they are doing when they say these kinds of things you're just perpetuating things that you've heard and you think they're harmless but they actually do they are quite harmful and damaging to a little girl in a world where there's very few reminders that she is a valuable just the way she is in the book there's a lovely twist where sewage goes on a magical adventure and she starts to. Understand where this hatred of darkness comes from it's a beautiful passage and then at the end of the journey she realizes that she is in fact beautiful and I wonder when did you realize that you are in fact really beautiful well you know it was definitely a longer journey than the one suiter goes on but it took time and I think it took you know it definitely took the support of my family the love of my family and then it was little things like or big things like Aleck Wek the supermodel who was strutting the runway is British Sudanese Yeah Yes And Oprah Winfrey saying that I like was beautiful her appearing on the cover of magazines these were suddenly these mirrors of darkness that I could identify with you know being able to see yourself reflected in the imaginative and aspirational material is so important because I think as human beings we see ourselves when we see ourselves in others here's a question I want to ask you because I rarely I really get to ask something like this but I mean you are you are one of the most beautiful women in the world you've been on the phone you've done you've been the face of low income and I bet when you walk into a room or walk through an airport there are so many women looking at you and thinking God I wish I looked like her What is it like to be that pretty. Feels really good feels really really great you know I think about it in misty been considered beautiful on this earth longer than I have felt or been considered beautiful and for that I am eternally grateful but also I find a lot of gratitude in my 1st years on this planet because having to identify or having to not rely on how I looked like. To seduce or to get by in life really meant to that I had to cultivate other aspects of myself my personality my character and get a sense of self-worth from something other than people complimenting what I look like and now after that I I relish in the compliment but I do know that external beauty will fade and hopefully I have cultivated and I continue to cultivate enough internal beauty to sustain me through the years when I am not such a hot pick.
