Hit wonders of France the solution forecaster from the Dollar Car little studio this is the day Branson show where American hangs out to have a conversation about your life in your money I'm dressed so good filling in for Dave and we are going to have a blast this hour I don't you're out here you want to chase down results you've got some dreams to live and some people that you want to help but guess what it can all begin here as we talk about your questions to get clear on the plan as well as the process you can make some stuff happen so here's the deal if you've got a question you want to talk I want to hear from you the. Number to call is triple 88255225 Again that's 888-825-5225 or you can find us on social media at Ramsey Show you can find us there whether it's on all the social media platforms or you can look me up at Chris Hogan $360.00 as well would love to hear from you Ok I'm going to get to the phones because that's what we do I've got Archie on the line calling in from New York Archie How were you how you doing this all again oh I'm focusing not finish my friend what's on your mind. Thank you for having me on so yes I'm sorry sir but no sir I said Well can I help you today. It's not a question right now I and you know I'm I'm in training. For my carry and I should be graduating finishing in June of next year Ok and I do have to have some I have a lot of loans and one of the loans out of take out was about 25 and I was wrong for the location Darvocet interest rate between 11 to 12 percent now I do have a $43.00 b. But 90 percent of that is. Pre-tax and rest of it about 5 percent as Ross post-tax. That's what I'm out in direct I was about non-profits and so between the relocation longer and. Credit cards I have and say it's all about the 20000 to about 9000 so my question is last year I go ahead and. Pull the money from the top 3 b. To go ahead and cover the pyramid for those initial. Debt especially. Law and I have a substantial interest rate between 11 and 12 percent Ok what's your income Archer . Carli I mean Cheney are making 68000 b.c. Are blocking January actually yeah it's coming Chris the 77. And up this this debt that you have so you have around 9000 and of credit cards no not. Yet between credit card and just one and there to have. Loans as well Ok so you say how much debt would you say you have altogether I want you want your right not to marry right now and just on the 500000 miles on 2 and 99 $91000.00 I've got about $470.00 student loans 470000 their student loans it's what do you study and what are you please tell me I'm coming from NASA like you're on the moon or something right now like what do you do. While my medical doctor I'm finishing. Training couldn't. Find out what's undergraduate master's degree in medical degree my goodness Ok And so you coming out best case scenario is this training done in June is that the residency that you're done with yes I'm going to train you know are you here make me feel better how much are you going to be making in June well. You know I mean I'll be. Ready to 70 ask you it's going to be like you going to where I know right out there just base salary you know you're looking for work between sitting for 500 people I mean if you are able to get a lot over time you're lucky and you can make up to 6 maybe 700 depending embassy work right how old are you young man. I'm 3434 years old. Here's the reality I'm about to I'm out to help you change your whole game here 1st and foremost know do not pull money out of the 43 b. You put that money and it was done pretax so if you pull it out if you've got 9000 in there you're going to probably get around 4000 after the taxes and penalties right because you can't access that money penalty free until 59 and a half and so there's no reason to to pull the tree up to look at it to see if it's growing or not so don't do that that's not an option the reality is is that you're going to have to make some decisions right like you if you will hear me and do this you young man will change the game for yourself meaning yes you know the training has got to go through June you've signed on you took on an astronomical amount of debt from medical school and all the things coming with it but as you come out of this and you start to make money you're going to actually need to do this and it's going to sound crazy but I will give you 2 words you're going to need to live broke . Here me if you live broke even though the money is starting to come in what you can do is get this almost half a $1000000.00 of student loan out of your life but you're going to have to I'm telling you if you don't have to swallow some pride and make a decision that means you keep driving the car that you have you don't go get anything new because you don't need to prove anybody you're an m.v. Ok you have the niche was at the end of the name and the student loan debt to show for it but if you keep your lifestyle like an broke mode meaning just cheap like ramen noodle pork and beans Ok you do have a better not maybe but you get my point you need to throw all the extra money toward this debt if you do this you can get this out your life in best case scenario I would say 3 years if you live that way if you don't you have the potential Archie from 34 you have the potential of being 54 in 20 years and this debt has not gone down much so which one do you want to be do you want to be the Archie that's debt free and doing some stuff or you want to be the archer that still making payments on student loans 20 years later make that decision today and do everything else accordingly and I'm telling you to put you on a different path you'll have an opportunity to not only have breathing room you actually get to keep some of the money you're working hard to be able to have and see this mindset and this is for everybody this is live literally for everybody if you've got debt out there if you make a decision that I'm going to downgrade lifestyle to make sure I can upgrade my overall quality of life things can happen this is where you start to eat the food that's in your cabinets you know some of us have moved a lot you all have a can allow my beans probably that's moved with you 3 or 4 times right I mean seriously the can is just tired the label is fallen off your tape and it back on Eat them beans people Ok get it out of there quit acting like you're too good to eat that food eat the food and let's be let's be smart you know I was talking to a gentleman that was spending around $3000.00 a month eating out per month $3000.00 a month or. Eating out that's ridiculous I asked him Do you even have a kitchen in your house like sell your stove you're not using it right as cook right and so for him who had 50000 a credit card debt it was a game changer for him because to go from buying groceries to cooking he was already used to spending 3 grand a month eating out for him to be able to shift $2500.00 of that over and start going to a debt I'm going to take this up and he got excited he got excited because he started to see some progress so that's what we need sometimes we need a new perspective so we can have an understanding of a real plan this is the big Branson show. Keeping you up to date with news that matters to you from around Iowa and closer to home right here in Story County where news talk 1430 k.s.i. Been in July and we have all of us under the same roof for the 1st time in 10 years we've grown so much we roll over the place kind of spread out within several blocks of each other but we're all here and I tell you I love meeting the people out in the lobby just amazing folks one gentleman is here for his birthday from Southern California met several people from from Florida couple from Connecticut I mean so from all over so if you get a chance to stop by Come come visit Melissa Wilson over the Baker Street Cafe she will take care of you and give you coffee and cookies a lot all kinds of things that I've baked for you personally that's just plain now she does the baking I didn't do that but we'd love to see you and love to see the smiling faces and to come visit us here at the office all right if you're out there and you've got a question we want to hear from you the number to call is 888-825-5225 again that's triple 88255225 We want to hear from you call us Amanda us by the phones ready to talk to you and if you prefer you can send us a message on social media at Ramsey Show or find me at Chris Hogan 360 however you want to do it but we want to hear from you I want to get to the phones I've got a Leo on the line a Leo How are you I am good for you I am good where you calling from. Oh my job I'm from Buffalo New York but my job to talk to work for the next few months what So you're calling from Stockholm. I am I am what time is it there it is 920 and it's very cold Wow so it's late and your up are you talking to me are I'm excited how can I help you. So long story short I'm 27 Ok I was raised by my grandparents they adopted me but their house to help put me there college I went to law school I'm now making about 210000 dollars a year Ok I'm also $1180000.00 Ok so my question is that my grandparents there and their eighties now the House that they live and they all want but it's not it's not a great neighborhood I would like to pay them back and buy them a house so I have house and then I have to spend on the other hand and my question is do I pay down this humongous student debt or do I just go for it and I have about $50000.00 saved up right now by the my house bill happy and. It's so that's my dilemma and I think you are how well then we can write and then we can get about $900.00 per month so that can go towards the mortgage. But and then I would have you know these choose that's a very large bet on my on my credit card right so is the goal let me actually there's a way because number one you are very articulate you've thought this through you've been thinking about this for how long. Ever since I was maybe 14 years old. You've got a desirable burning desire in your heart to show him how much you appreciate him don't you. Exactly like Life's short. Yeah you know I hear you. And I tell you Do they love you they do I know very much so yes they do and I say this because as I'm talking to you I think they they love you and care enough for you that they would want you to make sure you're putting yourself on solid financial ground so make sense. And the solid financial ground is right now you're not in a position to be able to buy them a home Ok Right now I'm just being honest in looking at this for what they've done for you now here's what you could do I think you could do something amazing with them I think you could take them on a trip I think you could take them on a cruise or do something like that to really show them and let them know how much you appreciate them but I do think that you do have the opportunity with your career path that you'll be able to do something eventually but I would say right now the best gift you could give them and you would be to get intentional on attack in these student loans the I'm serious and you said I love that you know your numbers but you said you have about almost what 200 in what 180000 student loans. Ok And you're making around 200000 right now. Ok so I imagine I mean if you were to get really really focused Aliya How long do you think it would take you to pay off that student loan well. I really am yet really really focused. 3 years I think so too I really do now think about that so you've got to decide there are some things you're not going to do that your friends are going to be doing because they're going to let that that law school on hang out like a family member but if you're not yeah and you free it up in 3 years you imagine this student loan debt is gone of what you were paying and now you're able to start to build wealth for yourself so I think what you have is the opportunity again you could do something really really special form you could take him on a trip take him on a cruise do something the house not just yet. And the only reason why is you don't want to build take on that debt then you're going to be trying to get a house and now we look up to Leon imagine imagine now you've got 2 mortgages and the student loan debt. Right here you're going to be living paycheck to paycheck young lady and you're too smart you've worked too hard you've sacrificed to get where you are I say do something nice for him write him a letter tell them to talk to them walk them through your appreciation and your gratitude but more importantly give yourself solid financial footing and you move forward we don't want to go backwards we want to go forward and that's what I do I really would be honest with you and you get intentional and in 3 years you knock out the student loan debt and then you look up and you've got an opportunity to do things with your money that you never thought you could do before thank you for that call Wow We are international Ok you all you need to know this Dave Ramsey Show the Chris Hogan show we have listeners all across the world and love to hear that that we had with someone calling in from Stockholm great opportunity to be able to have a conversation all right next up I've got Carol on the line Carol is calling from Indiana Carol how are you. Good how are you all on focus and not finish what's on your mind on. What we finally got introduced to you guys my sister and we have a little discussion going on about credit cards I feel like I benefit from a credit card we only might have and then I only have one and then take vacations for free a year. For free I don't. For free gas. Well that's what I mean if the plane ticket so I pay $100.00 a year fee for the credit card but monthly basis we put about $7000.00 a month always paid off because we do all of our monthly budgeting bills thing as inclusive and that equals out to about $84000.00 points here and I at least get 3 round trip tickets a year right with those points Ok so if you switch back to numbers it's at least $600.00 a year and I'm only paying $100.00 fee I feel like I'm making $500.00 off this credit card or you're making money what magical did you have. As the United States miles all right and you all have been doing actually the Southwest we just switch to United Ok How long have you been doing this. You know I think doing this for the last 30 years because my husband was going to medical school and we couldn't afford traveling. Wow this is a good way to travel for freedom and so your sister is telling you what's the debate what's the question could you have a magic hard to believe here is I feel like I I. I appreciate what you guys you but I feel like we are one of a wife couples that looks to benefit is what sure you know I might get a card what your net worth right now are net worth. Probably 400 Ok Ok well I don't know what you mean by network Well I mean I work out of medical school right. Well I mean we're probably Yeah yeah well here's the reality what I mean by net worth is you take everything that you own minus anything that you owe on and see Add that up it's a net worth I'm going to tell you this 98 percent of people are paying off the credit cards each and every month and I can tell you something else this might drop moment people I talked over $10000.00 millionaires I asked them how they got their Guess how many told me it was because of points and rewards and Miles not a one so you keep your unicorn card you do what you need to do the rest the people out there that are focused and not finish and pay them things off shut them down and live your life this is the gay friends show. I got a call the other day and I thought it was worth talking about again it was from a wife looking for a life insurance for her family she asked why I only recommend term life insurance just out of cash value plans like whole life I usually explain how you overpay for coverage on a horrible rate of interest and don't get your cash value when you die but this time I just had to go straight to Zander dot com and get a rate and then we compared that rate to the whole life plan and she immediately saw the huge savings she realized all the things she could do with that money like paying down debt investing in a smarter way that made it real for her it makes no sense to buy or keep a cash value plan when there are smarter less expensive ways to protect your family that's why I suggest that everyone go to Sander dot com or call them at 803564282 get a free quote that's Zander dot com or 803564282 this year infinities. I'm doing great how are you Chris all your buddy I'm focused not finish what's on your mind. You guys are changing lives of you know me was hope so I have I had about $87000.00 in student loans and prayer to August my plan for having that paid off was in the entire bucket of public service long forgiveness I found out around that time that only about 2 thirds of that so about $60000.00 applied for that program and $30000.00 of it so that started our sort of intent towards that 30 grand we've been really doing a great job of paying that off however I still have a little bit of the that wants to still stay in that mode of maybe I could receive that funding for the other 60 grand. And so I'm start starting to look out at some of the percentage rates on that could potentially refinancing for for your for your calculation my average interest payment is about 6.8 percent for my loans and I could refinance around 3 and a half or $3.00 So I think I don't think it would be worth refinancing for just the 30030000 but if I were to give up on the dream of public service loan forgiveness I could refinance and make it work and I want to do your advice on what you would do if you were much you Alan tell me this what's your household income is about 90000 before tax 90000 before taxes and you owe 87000 in the student loan debt correct yes if that's the only debt you owe on yes or Ok so how do you have a home yet. We read you read Ok So look at this here Allan I will be honest with you I've read through some of these loan forgiveness programs and here's the thing that makes me apprehensive about believing them they typically if you read in the little laws are the little by laws of the requirements it talks about in there that which things that can never happen meaning you can never be late on a payment if you're late on a payment then it forfeits you from the program all right they also most of time will reserve the right to change the program I don't trust it now I've heard of some people that have done it there's teachers and or firefighters or things that nature that have qualified but it's one of those things where I go Do I really trust them to keep the program around or to not change something in the next 67 years as you're trying to approach it now I don't want you to think I'm being negative Nancy because I'm not I'm just saying the likelihood right I mean it means you can send in a payment and it get there on time but they don't post it on top right they did and so then what So I think you're better off with you having the mindset of it could or it couldn't I would I'd rather you being controlled and you'd be at their mercy if that makes sense. You know right now that's a $60000.00 swing I know you're thinking Ok lowballed man Ok this is $60000.00 Chris and yeah I'm going to follow it to a t. I would just say read over the program guidelines very clearly look at it call them with any questions and just have your thing down to a tee but I would also say this you need a backup plan if they change the game on you and they've been known to do that a few times and so Allen I would much rather you be in control and you say you know what we're going to handle this and we're looking at this we're going to get ourselves free and so I've told people hey be saving that up put that money aside and lo and behold if they change the program you've got money that you can grab and just say I'm done with this and so it's just a mindset I want you to be prepared too many times I've heard of people that have waited on that proof forgiveness program only for the program to be adjusted or changed and it just leads to heartache and headache I say attack that get out your life and move forward Thank you for your call my friend Next up I've got Christie on the line in Texas Christy how are you showing I'm gonna hear you oh I'm focused the not finished I'm excited to talk to you how can I help you meet here not a question about like. What I'm calling why bet what you like not what we're currently paying Ok Hold on don't wait a minute wait a minute. What now there's 2 types of debt you get yet don't chuckle You knew I was coming back to this you've got bad debt and what you what did you call the other one well I live debt Ok All right so go ahead now I've got live debt bad debt go ahead Ok so we have about 85. Total and that though works for repaying that we have huge that have gone bad and. I haven't made payment in poly about a year what kind of debt where they. Owe those who are both consumer debt Ok. Or credit cards credit cards Ok are going and so my question is Where are we just started they don't have them we're going to writing up a bunch of little debt this month like 100 dollars 600 dollars yada yada Ok so we have an offer letter though from one of the bad. Is the bad debt is 6000 a little over but the offer is for a long moment of 701 earnings should we take that offer and put it above paying off our oh I don't know Dave says you know give your snowball and then if you have bad debt do another snowball so what you pay for part like you're making up the kind of. Trying to move up to the top of the priority list or so we all just focus on getting the rest of it paid off Ok very good this is a great question the real world scenario these bad debts. Have been bad for how long are you here Ok all right and so they obviously have been reaching out trying to call you guys and connect with you a lot I mean I know they have that's how they roll but Ok so if you've got the 2 credit cards or the bad debt one is 6000 and the other one is how much. Ok all right and so then you've got 85000 is the bad debt part of your overall debt number is that the overall part of that 16000 in bad debt as part of the 85 if included Ok All right very good and so you're asking me as you make it what is the other debts what are the live debts as your comment you've given candidates and how much in life you want your credit cards. Ok. While I have a board literally up on my wall and 234 Ok but they're not that big so one of us you have on we're going to be paying off that much Ok and then the other 2 are about 2000 what else is on that but on that board you got the credit for going to parts and without it you don't like Ok student loans Ok here's here's here's the reality and looking at this you're going to have these companies call and be reaching out for you for settlement. Bottom line is most of the time to be able to settle it's going to require money and they're putting this in writing so you're telling me you guys owed them $6000.00 a credit card is unsecured both of those the 6 and the $10000.00 so if there are for you right now to settle this in full for it's $1700.00 do you all have $700.00. This month we don't but we well we could do it but hold on now listen to me you still got to take care of the other stuff right you've still got to make medical care right so you have an extra $700.00 coming in next month. And honestly yes might have been at the beginning a pretty sweet check Ok all right if that's the case Chris listen to me if that's the case then yes I would do that to take care of the other needs other things you able to handle business if that's extra time in the end then yes I would now here's how I would do this though they've put it in writing I tell people all the time it's not a settlement offer if it's not in writing so they put it in writing I'm going to get a check a cashier's check in the amount of $700.00 I'm going to overnight the check to the company to require someone to have to sign for it so I'm not playing the game of they didn't get the check and didn't have it we have it and on the memo line of the check I'm going to say settle it in full for x. Account number and be done with it keep a copy of it in your files so you can move forward this is the Dave Ramsey Show. It really is an extraordinary exhibit it's interesting there are artifacts that actually Billy Sunday the famous evangelist was very much against the use of there even several short videos that you can select in play as you're browsing the exhibit and one of them is a wonderful short film of Billy Sunday preaching about the evils of alcohol and oh my gosh he was firebrand he was a firebrand in his language is just so colorful For more on all that's happening in . Hello everyone you are listening to the Dave Ramsey Show I'm Chris Ogun filling in for David we've had some fantastic calls and I was talking to a caller before we went to break about dealing with old debt so these are debts that might be charged off she called them bad debts but if you if you go a certain period of time without payment they can do what's called charge off which means they're writing it off their books doesn't mean they're forgiven it is just something that they're going to sell off to a debt collection company somebody else is going to start to call you and the thing we were talking about in that call was this company had this debt collection company had sent them a letter as an offer of settlement which means you owe x. Amount and they're willing to settle for another dollar amount the key that I want to take away from that is a pain with a cat a you've got to have the money a settlement offer means nothing if you don't have the money to be able to pay it so you need the money and if you're going to do this you need to get a cashier's check make a copy of the cashier's check before you send it off as well as a copy of the letter and I want you to send it will. Overnight that they have to sign forward with signature required that way that they can't play the game that they didn't get the check not only do you know they got it you know what time they got it and you know what who signed for it and you keep that in a file because it's going to take probably 2 months for that to be updated off the credit report to show paid and typically it won't show paid in full it will show settled so they'll still be a bile a balance showing on there so this is all stuff that I walk people through we have what's called our financial coach master training for people that want to learn how to coach others and to be able to help them in their situation this is something you can check out you can go to Dave Ramsey dot com and look at financial coach master training and get an opportune an opportunity for how you could work with people to start a coaching business or if you want to coach people just for ministry sake so you've got an opportunity to be able to learn as well as grow All right I'm going to jump on the phones I've got Luke on the line Luke how can I help you. Chris I got a little question here much I've heard Dave talk about how kind of you wait. For me I was an egg college town and the rent always is always high I've tried looking for I've tried looking for a place in the lower rent but the problem of that is on the correctional officer so I caught up stay I can some of the safe area to avoid. People I've had in and jail before and there's not with any good options how much is your rent right now look right now at $77.00 a month Ok And what's your household income. I'm bringing home about 32 and I watch from about 30 a year Ok So 32 and 30 and tell me this what debts do you all have left right now. Right well we have about 14 and a credit card with a 20 on a card. 150 I'm sorry we have 1500 on personal loan and and in student loans Ok so 14000 or a credit card 20000 on a car Yes Ok and then personal loan Ok and then student loans of how much and i'm Ok gotcha Ok so you guys income household incomes right at what $62000.00 a year. Yeah Ok all right and so what you think and you guys are talking about buying a house. I'm feeling like we bought a house and b. Will cheaper than renting out so. You know I can I'm going to tell you this I can understand the feeling. And probably looking at the math I could probably even sound or stand it but here's the reality when you rent and something breaks somebody else gets to fix it when you own and something breaks you get to fix it so this mindset and I'm going to tell you right now look you could probably find a place that would do a home for you on a mortgage right now looking at where you all are I say not yet now I understand you're saying Chris the rent is high I get it but I want it also acknowledge this the interest rate is high on some of these that you have right and so you can get rid listen 20000 of it you can get rid of here in the next week as that car you go to Kelly Blue Book and find out the value of it and sell that bad boy that's 20000 gone right there so then you're left with 14000 a credit card 141500 personal loan see I want you to be able to save up a down payment to be able to put down on a home 10 percent minimum 20 percent would be absolutely incredible because it allows you to avoid private mortgage insurance p.m.i. Doesn't protect anybody but the lender so I would say not yet look I want to be honest you want to not only get yourself out of debt you want your fully funded emergency fund and then you want a home down payment that's what we called a home down payment maybe step 3 b. So I would say stay focused I like that maybe this house for you and your wife is the thing that will motivate you guys to go faster I want you to have that and have the American dream I just don't want you with the 1st ration and irritation of getting it too fast because then you're frustrated by it and it should be something that should be a good thing for you guys so stay focused keep grinding attack debt get it out of your life then you can look at trying to buy a home later that's my advice to you all right I'm back on the lines I got hand I know Hile hand how are you. Oh I'm focused on not finish what's on your mind. All right so. We're wondering do you think you know what we have at the moment. We have no debt and the $50000.00 mortgage Ok we've got a vehicle completely paid for somebody gets that. We're probably about 35000 Ok I would get 4 kids are how is it currently worth about 135140. But it's pretty small with the 4 kids we're looking at moving hopefully sooner rather than later but we are willing to tough it out if we need to so I guess I'm just looking for a little bit extra with my why don't you if you had what we have yes. I like to tell you this Hannah How old are the kids. I have an 8 year old 5 mil that's 4 year old and a 6 month old Ok. You love your. Right Ok so how big of the home is it that you live in right now. A lot of 100 square feet Ok and if you won't were to you told me the value is about 135 what shows household income about 70000 Ok and have used had you been you've been looking at homes already have a chip I welcome nonstop we were doing a fixer upper thanks so we purchased a home for 72053 and it's worth quite a bit more than we even put in you know we'd like to do that again we've been on the phone for 2 years and we know that you have to stay at home for to avoid that that's right but right so that's kind of what we're planning to do with the next house also. I don't think I like your focus but I want to clarify again you don't own anything but the mortgage correct. Correct Ok See I like you also focus I'm saying you look at this and let's run that run the numbers you know 1100 square feet family of 5 I mean or a family of 6 Rather it could be tight but here's the thing imagine you guys looking at this you don't mention that you have necessarily any kind of money saved as a downpayment you know you're going to have the equity out of the home but looking at this could you could you tough it out another 78 months as you look for the right house right I don't think there's anything wrong with it and one side of me says Sit stay put pay that thing off right have the kids bunk up their small anyway like they're just they're little they don't take up much space react so I think you guys walk through this keep your eyes wide open be intentional you know you were blessed with a car like you said you all have gone into it you've been very intentional with this house you've got some serious equity built up I want you to be careful Ok because a right around this time when people are at the crux of getting ready to make a breakthrough or run fast forward there's always the option to fall backward meaning you get caught up in the deserve mentality because you've worked hard or you say we're a family of 6 we deserve a bigger home or we deserve a minivan by the way nobody deserves a minivan don't do that to yourself unless you've got a whole lot of children but let's not me be focused stay focused my friends America we've got some things we can do we need to chase down progress is not an accident I want to thank all the callers for calling in and I want to thank all of you listeners for tuning in I want to thank James Childhelp producer Amanda Rogers filling in for Kelly Daniel as well as Bobby Robertson audio tag I want to thank all of you for tuning in and I've had a blast this has been the Dave Ramsey Show.
