News. To. Get. It. Right now Fisher House hero. Takes a wrong step in Afghanistan. My job is a very very dangerous job a Black Hawk helicopter pilot becomes a bull's eye in Iraq I was hit by a rocket propelled grenade and end up being severely wounded the battlefield injuries that strengthened their resolve to serve I think we need more of that in the government. From the combat zone to Capitol Hill to wounded more heroes with a new way to help fellow veterans and it started there at the Fisher House. This is Fisher House Heroes sharing stories of our nation's veterans and military families this special presentation is a proud service of Fisher House Foundation at Fisher House dot org With thanks to the station for its gift of air time now your host Mark Watkins It was late one day in November 2004 Illinois National Guard Captain Tammy Duckworth had landed her Blackhawk in Baghdad fiercely protected Green Zone her job was shuttling service members to and from the Capitol just like a taxi she Job One time she grabs some stir fry in a milkshake and was about to head to her home base 50 miles north and turn in for the night when she was called on to make one more trip I was just a soldier who had been her in battle serving my country and my husband was just another Illinois guardsmen and the husband of a wounded warrior sitting by my bed praying that I would survive. We didn't have political connections we didn't have a lot of money and our only plans were for me to recover and rejoin my unit. Going to. Army ever. Pretty important to me still served her country but she is no longer a captain today her colleagues color Senator you'll hear more from Tammy Duckworth and her husband Brian Bowles be coming up 1st we head to Florida today we have our new congressman Brian mast and he's one of you to. The ones of you who are in the army the local veterans nonprofit organized to get together featuring southeast Florida's newest member of the u.s. House so anyone want to head over to Brian our new Congress and thank you all again for coming. To lunch at a lakeside retreat gave Brian a chance to do what he loves best hang out with it for me personally there's no group that I'd rather read. That each and every one of you who put on a uniform I love you all I couldn't be more proud than to say that we are cut from the same cloth. I have respect for any man that. Like right and that has gone over there and sacrifice. A lot where the country and it comes back over and still wants to survive if you don't have a guy like him there's no doubt it was intentional for what we've all been through disability. Doesn't get his way and that's the message he conveys to people like the Scots out here. When Brian's military service ended he insisted on finding another way to help those in uniform the Republican ran for the u.s. House seat from Florida's 18th district in his 1st ever campaign for office and he won the true intent of my remarks today. Hard to talk about my favorite part of going to the v.a. And that is sitting next to my fellow veterans when I sit down at one of the clinics at my local v.a. Hospital whether it's a Marine from Iraq whether it's a sailor from World War 2 a soldier from Vietnam an airman from Korea when ever we sit down next to each other there's a camaraderie that exists immediately Brian story begins September 19th 2010 he was an Army bomb tech and compared his work to what you saw in the movie The Hurt Locker his unit was heading for a target in the dark. We. Essentially were working out of the south Kandahar Afghanistan area in an area called Sorry Panj away and that particular night we had been dropped off we had taken to Chinook helicopters out on to mission and. Group that I was with where we had dropped off were dropped off into a tall marijuana field there's a lot of those over there who were dropped off in a tall poppy field it was on the wrong side of a river that we had to get to the other side and I was essentially tasked with leading in clearing the way as was often the case as the bomb technician I was tasked with leading clearing the way across the battlefield we got to a certain place where we had to cross this river that I determined it was the only place that we could get across this river basically told my guys that if I could figure out this was the only place we could get across then you know certainly any enemy in the area could figure out it's the only place that we could get across the river did everything that I could to look for for an improvised explosive device on the near side of the bank didn't find anything got to the far side of banks started to do the same thing looking for batteries and wires trip wires disturbed earth eventually I was doing that on my hands and knees and I stood up and there's 2 snipers I was working with I gave them the signal that I was going to forge ahead and as I did that and I moved to maybe one or 2 steps beyond this area that I had just searched. I found that device that I felt was there in all likelihood I stepped on it and I really. That vividly as well I can remember it you know tumbling me through the air probably landed 5 or 10 feet from where I'd been standing. And when something blows up it's buried in the ground there's a huge plume of dirt and dust you know it's under the ground you know and so there's it's it's nighttime are ready and there's this huge plume of dust and dirt in the sky a Chinook helicopter carried him away it was the last memory he had before waking up in Washington d.c. a Week later without his leg news is wife was at his side just being an Army wife you just kind of take charge and you just do what you have to do and then one of those very emotional moments I simply told her I said Look I'm not going to let the best offense that I give our country be something that's in my past and I'm not going to let the best example that I set for our children be something that's behind me Brian spent 2 months in a room at Walter Reed Army Medical Center Briana and their infant son became guests at Fisher House a network of no cost comfort homes offering veterans and military families no cost lodging during times of medical crisis it was like home away from home because it had family kitchen living area family. Room it's just a safe place to be you know during that tragic time and just walk over to the hospital and see Brian and come back. To be able to go back and forth all day long having a place to stay is one thing but getting there is another Fisher House helps military families also with he role Miles a pool of frequent flyer miles donated by you for a round trip and often emergency or travel donating is easy Take a listen to the impact it makes. My name I live in San Antonio Texas my husband. Served in the Army and was injured back in August of 2011 nothing was in my other than that I needed to be with my husband. Miles made it possible for me to be there for him Fisher House Foundation chairman and c.e.o. Ken Fisher says the Hero Miles Program keeps military families together and gets them where they need to be here Miles is a partnership with me here where people can get on with life. To us and we can buy tickets for family to go back and forth that the government will take care of one trip that's it but the world does not come to a screeching halt when a better and family or a or military family has a loved one that requires hospitalization and like on the holidays still. You know I want to see my kids it was hard being away from my kids but I mean I had my husband. And then the social worker says. I'm here for the holidays so I got to see my kids for Thanksgiving or Christmas here Miles to care. Allows the family to keep their lives going the same time helping their loved ones that's why you know Miles as someone by donating your frequent flyer miles you are making a difference how many frequent flyer miles are sitting in an account that you might never use 501-0000 even just 1000 miles will make a difference find out how to donate frequent flyer miles right now at Fisher House dot org slash He rolled my old. Army bombed bra in mast lost both legs when he stepped on a roadside bomb in Afghanistan I was injured September 19th 2010 I woke up about a week after I was injured in Walter Reed Army Medical Center Washington d.c. I. Largely understood that my time of jumping out of planes and kicking in doors with terrorists on the other side roping out of helicopters that sort of thing I largely understood that that that had come to an end that I was no longer going to be an asset on the battlefield I would now be a detriment I didn't know whether I was ever going to stand there and throw a baseball or a football with my kids and I didn't know if I was ever going to be able to carry my kids and walk them to sleep at night when they were crying you know I didn't I didn't know what the future held his recovery give him a lot of time to consider his future and how to maintain his support for fellow veterans I started thinking about running for Congress while my wife was staying at a Fisher House as matter of fact there was a lot of people visiting Walter Reed congressmen senators White House staffers and I think that played a role in it as well that I decided Ok my next battlefield is going to be Washington d.c. And that's where I'm going to get back in the fight Brian mass made his victory speech short he told the crowd his hard work will continue in Washington how can I fight this place how can I defend this place where do I have to do what do I have to do to get to work and be the representative that everybody elected me to be I just was amazed. He has fortitude to get out and do this it's hard work and when you look at him you know he's going to put to work in. Disability. It doesn't get his way and that's the message he conveys to people like these vets out here one of the most important lessons that I ever learned in the military that I ever learned to combat was that inspiration matters military leaders that I had who displayed courage and valor in selflessness they drew the exact same thing out of every single soldier that surrounded them and that's my goal as I'm here in the halls of Congress every day that I work to above all inspired. Peer that I have here Republican and Democrat to have courage and to make sure that their sense of duty is to America above anything else and to make sure that we serve selflessly and that every day that we're given the honor to serve here to make this country and our communities that much better and with that I yield back any time that I have are made. When Fisher House heroes returns find out what keeps the congressman busy outside the beltway I was. A little boy. We'll tell you why in this house all roll calls always in order. And later. Radio news drug prices have been increasing astronomically but many generic drug prices which are usually much less expensive have led the way sometimes increasing by thousands of percentage points we're down to Miller president of the Johns Hopkins Hospital says the reason is clear sole source providers a loss of competition in the generic market we have medications that have been around for decades but for a variety of reasons market consolidation perhaps issues with manufacture. Sharing it turns out that we end up with one manufacturer so we have no competition and the prices are jacked up Miller says some specific instances of greed have been identified but thinks that may be time for negotiation on the part of federal agencies like Medicare to standardize the drug prices as well as encourage more manufacturers to make to Merrick's and increase competition at Johns Hopkins I'm Elizabeth. On the grounds of military medical centers allowing families to be together in times of medical crisis the Fisher House played . Into the cockpit were in Virginia at the Monash this regional airport and just in time for a blue sky adventure aboard a classic Piper Cherokee. Your pilot is Captain Tammy Duckworth and you are in good hands and she was one of the 1st women in the Army to fly a Blackhawk helicopter during the Iraq war. Because . You have to at least say you're going faster than your helicopter in terms of coming in. They don't hover very well. Tammy's last ride in a Blackhawk changed her life in northern Iraq an unseen insurgent targeted the aircraft with a rocket propelled grenade the attack took both her legs and disabled her right arm she dreamed of one day putting a Black Hawk back up in the air but I understood that piloting are you age 65 tonnes is a full body effort. Technology for. Life. Raft. The single engine for cedar is older than Tami is still the sputtering propeller gives her a refreshing feeling of freedom at least my will get in there and I control. The Piper rolled off the assembly line in 1959 Tami's husband Brian Bowles b. Who was also a pilot plans to preserve the plane as long as possible related is something that. Can afford. The Illinois National Guardsmen flying with Tammy on Nov 12th 2004 both saved her life and changed her life I owe it to them to make their sacrifices and their heroic efforts that they work that I owe it to them to live every day to the fullest and to stand up for our veterans and for all Americans just 12 weeks after her injury a visit to the u.s. Capitol inspired her to shift her service from the battle front to the home front the Illinois Democratic Senator Dick Durbin asked her to join in for President Bush's State of the Union address our men and women in uniform are fighting terrorists in Iraq so we do not have to face them here at home. We decided to make a bid for the u.s. House as a Democrat it was her 1st ever campaign for office the race through attention across the country and on election night the margin was razor thin her challenger declared victory I'd like to congratulate him on a good campaign and I know that he has served our country greatly and sacrificed greatly. But I was an appointed director for the state of Illinois and I did that shop for a couple years until the president called and said that he wanted me to come to Washington d.c. And continue my work. Here at the nation's capital Tammy kept her eye on. Capitol Hill she weighed just 2 more campaigns for the house. She bounced back both times when in the support of voters in Chicago's northwest suburbs I'm grateful in that the people of the 8th district have entrusted. In me again to be their representative and cook it hard for us to keep they will and I will think if she was the 1st disabled female veteran elected to the u.s. House veterans issues lead her priorities she coauthored a bill to help stop suicide among veterans over time if she felt she'd have more success helping veterans from a bigger platform Thank you everyone thank you for being here we'll pick up that part of the story in a minute 1st more on Tammy Duckworth recovery from the Iraqi insurgents attack that could have killed her I was injured in Baghdad just north of Baghdad and Iraq in the end of 2004 I was a Blackhawk helicopter pilot I was hit by a rocket propelled grenade and end up being severely wounded I lost both my legs almost lost one of my arms which was saved thank goodness Tammy's husband Brian Bowles be even a major in the Illinois National Guard waited for his wife to return to u.s. Soil and to regain consciousness. Or writing but you know. Here was. A lot of aerial reading. There I don't know if you ever wake up. Mary and Brian was intent on being beside his wife at every step but where would he state he found a warm welcome at Fisher House it's a no cost Comfort home for veterans and military families facing medical crisis built on the grounds of Walter Reed Army Medical Center and many other military and v.a. Hospitals Well can I meet you in the money in the bank Whew so much Yeah me and her . Things are but in the 1st week. After about a month we had They're. Going to make plans for her to leave the hospital and actually live with me at hello this was a typical veteran's Johnnie's Fisher House families stay in private suites and use community living dining and laundry areas designed to help guess like Tammy and Brian make friends easily it's where we got to be with other family members and he got to have the strength of talking with the other family members who either were ahead of me in recovery or a little bit further behind and we helped each other get through that time figure out better with a Greek Interlinear that there even though he was in the form of environment to build the New York. I had to learn how to shower again in the hospital on my own but the 1st shower I took by myself with an official house so we'd have a big table in the middle of the house is generally cheaper to take a family sophist together any and in a smaller scale certainly the ability to live in that setting and actually use the kitchen as a close up theory in the hospital was a big 'd part of you know returning to a normal life Fisher House puts families together when they need one another most in Brian and tammy's case for more than a year and had no charge even doctors agree that a family's love is best medicine within a few months you know living that life in the morning that. Got him back and. Frank and Mark I was practicing what I learned in the hospital but at the same time it was bringing a lot of joy back of my life to you know my life is going to be normal again someday and it started there at the Fisher House plans to build the next Fisher House are always in the works discover how you can help at Fisher House dog or good . November 12. 2004 Illinois Army National Guard Captain Tammy Duckworth was flying a Blackhawk helicopter north of Baghdad moving people and supplies between bases and the capital flying was safer than driving but a 2nd chopper always flew to the right with a machine gun ready to take out any threat. Suddenly a rocket propelled grenade from somewhere within a half mile assault of the aircraft had burst the clear bubble on the cockpit floor then hit Tammy right leg was pretty much. Burned up in the. Right arm pretty badly she was bloodied and unconscious from aggression field her crew carried her to safety I'm alive today because I'm just. A handful of great American is even sleeping on the battlefield no longer able to fly for the Army she aimed to serve Vella veterans in other ways she tapped her political science studies from college and won 2 terms in the u.s.
