This is science today researchers might have found a way to improve a powerful gene editing tool called crisper which scientists hope can one day treat genetic disorders according to microbiologist Benjamin Roush of the University of California San Francisco the technology hasn't been precise enough and often makes mistakes crisper is not perfect crisper will actually cut d.n.a. In the wrong place if we give it enough time to do so you can't add it in the wrong place because that will have some negative effects so called anti crisper proteins that Russian his colleagues recently discovered could stop Christopher before it makes the wrong cut the researchers basically used bacterial viruses to replicate what happens in nature crisper his job in nature is to kill a virus by cutting its d.n.a. So virus by encoding anti crisper is able to fight back against Chris. Roush says a safer and more accurate crisper brings scientists a step closer to developing an effective d.n.a. Our Air Force news with Kevin Miller on News Radio 1029 came. To the rock restaurant that's working hard to get people to step up Darla is the owner of disease Gypsy Good morning darling how are you good morning Karen I'm great thank you you're working to try to help the homeless population at least in your area where the restaurant is there what is the inspiration behind that and what are you doing well where we feel very fortunate to do downtown we enjoy it we know that that can be a very small issue actually we have almost 0 problems with our residents who do not have homes and we actually come to know them enjoy them and would like to help in any way we can with them it's a complicated issue but it's it's a human issue it shouldn't be a political issue and it shouldn't be an issue. Well people who are the have don't want to see the have nots that's unfair and it's easy for people to find themselves in a desperate situation and I think oftentimes people forget that I don't know what are you doing at your restaurant how are the homeless people in population that have come to you involved in what you're doing there. The 1st thing we did when we got down it took me a while there's a learning curve you know you'll have someone come out to the terrace rail and ask for money I've learned to be very firm with them it doesn't happen much awareness when I mention these incidents. I'm mentioning an incident that may occur once or twice a week for us because what we've done is we've become good at looking at them to go and know but no move on and most of the time they may say something over their shoulder they move right on it's easiest not to engage and less they want food you don't give liquor obviously we don't give cash if they want a hamburger or they want pasta with a salad and bread we do that and that's in our we just implemented a new employee handbook that gives the service the power to see people and to treat them well we don't do anything to them and less by our problem and I have about one problem a month and message just arguing they argue a little bit you know that point we say hey head out go on and I go on you're hiring some of the you're hiring somebody homeless population to argue we've just begun the training program and that was we went to a meeting with the van and listen to some of the issues discussed we listen to air inside we listen to the city side we listen to business owners hear and read with their own reading with the van and when we got back I formulated a plan I decided that it was really easy especially with the women shelters and a couple of the other shelters and again to Aaron at the van to let them select a couple of people per month and let us bring them in and teach them basic skills or grading hostessing bar backing bussing dishwashing like food prep this is not. This is not the optimal job in the end for people who want to be employed but it's a it's a stepping stone but we train at $10.00 an hour we have a resume list once individuals are trained in that list with them we send it to the shelter and let them know they have a resume now we make sure that they are aware of the library resources and the fact they can go in and and look for post to jobs and the like are considered Jobs dot com They go in and look at what's available and they can put their resume together and go apply a lot of people are just kind of at a loss I mean it's not easy to get up and get a shower and get ready working with the shelters then has a warehouse full of career clothes I have a warehouse full of goods and supplies people need that we don't think about you know aspirin deodorant toothpaste toothbrushes a lot of people want to give and they want to throw their own nasty sweater someone gave them 21 years ago Christmas that's not needed What's needed are condoms and tampons and aspirin things that people don't want to talk about the van has that available so they can get them prepared they have to be prepared to work the 2 girls that we trained last month. Are amazing you would never know they had any issues whatsoever they were clean they were attractive they presented very well their clothes were perfect but fit right in and so that's working that's a success and they're a little business to take care of here more to ask about this so if you would stay with me for just a few minutes 650 Newsradio 1029 Karen we'll get back to more with Darla Huey from disease Gypsy beast hero and their proactive approach to assisting the homeless That's coming up right now Carrie case has your headlines Carrie thanks Kevin us the State House voted against expanding wind sales in Arkansas grocery stores yesterday it was a battle victory for small liquor stores but the fight is probably not over we'll let you know where that stands an effort to end the controversy over practice of celebrating Dr Martin Luther King Jr and robbery only on the same day we'll tell you what lawmakers are saying they reviewed legislation separating those dual holidays I'm Carrie case Newsradio 1029 k r And the rumor is Carrie that it could have been somebody backstage tweeting and they got distracted and that's whining the wrong Omble it was picked up at the Oscars on Sunday night and they announced the wrong name for best picture I got to tell you that's confirmed but that's the word Somebody should have picked up another obl Ok didn't do it and so that's what happened I have never been distracted by my phone so I will sit in judgment on. With their Mayo Clinic radio health minute I'm Tracy McRae despite all the rules the fines and suspensions we still hear the stories we live in a performance enhanced world so so we have a performance enhancing drugs in sports Dr Michael Joyner studies elite athletes how they reach maximum performance he says it's all about oxygen delivery to the body's tissues and it's red blood cells the do that blood doping is an effort to raise the number of blood cells by taking blood out storing it and then re infusing it later the other thing people do is use a drug called a ritual poet or e.p.o. And injection of each stimulates your bone marrow to make more red blood cells just kind of the body's own factory that makes red cells gets cranked up both techniques actually have legitimate medical uses but Dr joiner suspects that as long as the stakes are high some athletes will be tempted to use them for the wrong reasons for Mayo Clinic news network I'm Tracy McRae. With Kevin Miller on News Radio 1029 k. All read to him for what happened in the markets yesterday and now their record. On write another aggregate the July Money report headed your way Kansas traffic coming up news at the bottom of the hour it's a little rock restaurant it's being very proactive in helping the homeless Darley Huey's here with disease Gypsy be struck down of the whole idea of homelessness do you feel like this is just misunderstood or perhaps being too politicized part of the reason that it is an issue I signed my lease downtown with Tucker and Jimmy Moses because of the development because of that the investment that they made a new hotels were coming in I knew it was going to grow I knew that new restaurants would come in and we would become more and more a solid entertainment district which would bring tourism and it would bring repeated business people come and eat and they drink and they say in the hotels that's great what you can do is have had it both ways that's where all the resources are an urban center is where the homeless tend to gravitate and it's it's almost like people going to the beach and saying I don't like this or sand on the beach right that's implied that was implied when you signed your lease that was implied when you bought your condo that was implied when you're in a down there. I feel like people are a little bit unreasonable part of the reason it becomes politicized is that the city leaders spend millions and millions and millions of dollars are constantly trying to solve the issues downtown I talked to a guy day before yesterday who is one of the parks and tourism directors and he was down there making sure that all the trash is picked up everything was done correctly he works for the city manager who works through that you know and with the mayor blah blah what they do is everybody takes those gifts and they get mad when the homeless people might want to day go hey do you have a cigarette you can't do that it's unreasonable and then they put pressure on the city leaders and the city leaders try to respond to the business owners because they pay so much and tell tax. And we create this ridiculous situation where really you have a bunch of spoiled business owners down there who expect some bubble there is no bubble and you did not spend $260000000.00 and a couple of years promoting downtown you can't have it both ways I don't have a lot of sympathy there I'm friends with Aaron and I'm friends with with people in city leadership and I see both sides so I can be a catalyst for change and more pace I actually told a couple of the guys with the city to you know when people call and say we saw a man on a bench and we enter a restaurant we don't appreciate that this I want to check. That's just implied if they didn't understand that they should have gone and gotten the demographic information and studied before they opened a restaurant we're all doing very well downtown Darla Huey with disease Gypsy b. First news with Kevin Miller on Arkansas' news weather and traffic station News Radio 1029 Ok all right televise from Dr Sanjay Gupta that's headed your way you've got the Market Watch one report coming up before the top of the hour a whole lot of stuff is going on a lot of stuff in here right now to Dr Chelsea Smith with you a mass Good morning Dr Smith How are you I'm damned well how are you good morning I'm a little sniffle a little sniffling But you know I read that some of the blooms are out more than 20 days ahead of schedule I mean with that far ahead. What allergy or allergens are out there that are bothering people the most of the moment trees trees are the big ones they're usually the worst when it's going start. This fun stuff is it possible to develop add allergies to specific things over time or is it just something you have to live with. Absolutely allergies or fluid they typically start in early childhood or but even as we age we can sort of get better with some of our allergies and we can worsen with other particular allergies to treat you. Different types of pollen and things like that it just seems like everybody is complaining about this right now are you seeing more of this I see a lot of this in. My clinic and quality of life is a big issue for people that have severe allergies even if they're season all right and particularly right now because our winter has been so mild we really haven't had a you know a hard freeze or a couple of freezes and things like that things stayed relatively warm and relatively voice and so that's why these allergens are really cropping up earlier in the year than typically how do you treat it. For allergies there are several things to do when people come into the office you really want to take your great history and physical on these patients and if they do have allergies the 1st line therapy we that we do to treat these people is to do a intra nasal steroids spray and then heard as it doesn't hurt Ok well and they even a little bit of coaching to it because you want them to spray at the appropriate to correct trajectory if you're not spraying at that appropriate trajectory that's when you can get things like nasal dryness and maybe even some male Glee's strength but overall they're really effective to manage allergies than Chelsea Smith when you I'm as Ok we know the warmer weather in the blooms will affect is what about the rain too I mean we've had quite a bit of that lately. For the rain that probably is a bigger deal for allergens like mold a. So when things are nice and moist it makes that environment that mold can release the drivin and mold is a big thing in particular in the cell that people can be very allergic to and it can not only cause allergies but cause chronic sinusitis for those individuals is it typical for a person if they've got one allergy like you said right now tree pollen is the issue here if you're allergic Street problem may be allergic to grass pollen maybe mold We have multiple layers to you can have multiple allergies Absolutely and if you do have skin testing which is a way to diagnose allergies by putting pricks on the skin and actually testing specific. Allergies Yes a lot of patients that have severe allergies will have multiple allergies and they can be treated as multiple allergies so that's the good news I've had that done you know some time ago and have they done nothing back sounds terrible but it's really not the awful doctor that was really about that that got Josie Smith with you a mess Ok And for the typical person right now they're just kind of hands the sniffles they're suffering with it what's the best way for them to help you survive all this the best way to survive it is really threefold you want to do some say brain irrigation that's a big one because that's actually going to help flush and delete any allergens that are in your nose and if there happens to be any overlying sinus infection or swelling in there it can decrease that to keep the overall nasal environment moist Number 2 is to do the Internet as well steroid spray and number 3 is to take some anti-histamine oral and history and with that do any of the other things like a c. Get that many positive and something to go with. The neti pot is a way to do some failing irrigations in their several apparatus I bet you could use . To Esalen irrigations and that is one of them yes I keep hearing you talk about sailing and immigration for our integration What was that irrigation area one of the I words Dr Joseph Smith I've noticed this too if I have something going on with my sinuses in the times that I've gone to Florida I'm very round that air and also in the ocean water seems to clear things out of an uncommon but not uncommon because if you go into an environment that you're not typically exposed to all the time you may have not our choice and I have allergens specific to that area and also if you get into an empire mint. Like if you go to Colorado where it's cold weather in the winter it happens to be more fair if that's typically what people say Man I wish and I felt great my whole vacation I was there I came back and I feel like when I crossed the state line I was just already congested that's a really common thing to hear well you get the sniffles you get congestion How do you know it's just that just the allergies and not something more. Well a lot of it has to do with timing the if you say Ok Will every fall the ragweed it just gets me but the rest of the season I feel great but during that time I feel congested I have been itching as sneezing watery itchy eyes then you're thinking more along lines of our G.'s However allergies can happen year round people have allergens the things you know like test my pet dander So those are things but still you're going to have the Sentinel symptoms I just described if it's more of a common cold you're going to typically have more Malays or even a low grade fever not so much itching watery eyes then and things like sinusitis you're going to have you know maybe some colorful train ich facial pain in pressure that unremitting and you can also have beavers and things with that any place that I can find more information about what I need to do. Absolutely you can go to the u.n. A.M.'s don't let it go by. The fancy word for you know. That's what I do and there's actually lots of good and betrayal on the Internet through an allergy. Website but Elegy an account for national committees and those are easy way to information until then we'll keep the tissues handy aren't all right. Thanks so much 6 Morty 6 News Radio 1029 k. Should there be a cut off age for mammograms I'm Dr Sanjay Gupta C.N.N.'s chief medical correspondent for years doctors have recommended when women should start getting mammograms which is in their forty's but when should they stop the consensus among docs who want to put an upper limit on age is around $75.00 but a new study out a u.c.s.f. Says there is no specific age at which women should stop getting this routine test instead screening decision should be made in a woman's personal health so after analyzing data from millions of screenings researchers concluded as women get older the rate of breast cancer continues to rise it makes sense the cancer detection rate is higher with increased age the study's author said because breast cancer is a disease of older women most insurance companies do cover mammograms and the c.d.c. Says getting one every 2 years can the way your risk of dying from breast cancer I'm Dr Sanjay Gupta helping you live a better life. Markets back in record territory yesterday your market watch Money report headed your way traffic and weather coming up news at the top of the hour all in the next 5 minutes Elliott Abrams rack you out a good morning Eliot how you doing just fine how are you doing a little nervous a little nervous about the potential of severe storms later today and into tonight well there is that that risk and it's caused by the fact there's going to be some cold air in the upper atmosphere this guy sweep in from the west we have warm moist air down here at the ground and that encourages the air to start rising and there is a disturbance aloft that's going to come in that can also make the individual thunderstorms form into what are called Blowing structures and you look at that on the radar a little piece bows out almost like a front of an army or something like that and in those structures there are sometimes giant thunderstorms that build up that can actually contain tornadoes and during the daytime of course they're bad enough because we can see them at night though if the warnings issued the simplest thing to do is go to the safest place you can find right away. You know if if you're out on a golf course and somebody else for you sort of dock get out of the way of golf ball that some people when they hear a tornado warning go out to see outside to see if it's really coming where is it and so that can be a dangerous practice for the storms are going to be moving quickly so if you do go to a shelter go be an all clear issued fairly quickly any more have to stay there that long but there is that danger tonight how likely is it we're going to get something severe this evening Central Arkansas particular the chance of something somewhere in the area is probably better than 60 percent the chance of it hitting anyone spots about one percent so that's why we all have to be on alert even though it's sort of like auto insurance you don't expect to be in a wreck today but you're not going to cancel insurance make sure you take everything you've got here all right looks like upper seventy's is have to do now when do we really need to start. Looking for the severe weather is there a timing for this would be overnight middle of the night and into daybreak tomorrow and then once we get past early tomorrow morning. Of the coast obviously right well in one day but it's going to be Sunday for Thursday Friday and Saturday you know we'll get through this bump every day rooms Maggie weather thanks so much talk later 59 calm way 65 at the air base 60 in western Iraq more records in the markets yesterday your money news now investors are looking ahead to President Donald Trump's address to Congress Tuesday night the president is expected to unveil plans for his promised tax cuts and infrastructure spending on Wall Street the Dow closed Monday up 15 points the Nasdaq gained 16 in wake of the public outcry over rising drug prices like the Epi-Pen that shot up more than 500 percent Recently several big drug makers are trying to be more transparent Johnson and Johnson issued its 1st public report Monday on price increases experts say this type of response could help slow the rise of prices.
