It's Morning Edition from n.p.r. News I'm David Greene in Culver City California and I'm Steve Inskeep in Washington d.c. There was a time as Republican Senator Lindsey Graham likes to point out when he voted for both of President Obama's Supreme Court nominees now President Trump has a 2nd nominee to the court and in a talk with Fox Graham predicted that Brett Kavanaugh will receive at least a few Democratic votes for his confirmation if he does well at the hearing he will get my my belief is 55 or higher if he does well and I'm sure he will do well if he does well at the hearing he said that Senate hearing comes this week Democrats are determined to pose a lot of questions Kavanaugh does have a very long record a long paper trail but if Republicans remain united they can confirm Kavanagh even without Democratic votes n.p.r. White House correspondent Tamara Keith is with us now Hi there Tom hello So what's the process here right so there are going to be days and days of hearings and testimony as well there should be this is a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land so tomorrow Tuesday there will be opening statements every senator gets 10 minutes and then the chairman and ranking member get even more and then cabinet will be introduced and then finally at the end of the day he will deliver his opening statement and we well know it's going to take like a whole day before you even hear from the nominee basically. Well there are 20 senators and if each one gets 10 minutes it takes a long time Ok so there you go and you know we can expect to hear from Democrats during these statements raising concerns that not enough documents have been turned over from Kavanagh's years in the Bush White House Republicans will point to his qualifications say that thousands of documents have been turned over and say everything's perfectly transparent the big event starts Wednesday that's when senators will get to ask questions each senator in the 1st round gets 30 minutes there could be up to 3 rounds but a lot of people will just sort of It'll it'll wane Ok We'll be excitement at the beginning and then And then here's the thing Supreme Court nominees have gotten very well practiced at saying very little while while seeming like they're saying something in part because they they just don't want to get tied up Ok so how is Kavanagh been preparing to say very little as you point out or to say whatever it is whatever amount he's ready to say well he's been doing mock hearings sort of with with timers and lights and and really trying to replicate the experience and including being questioned for 30 minutes on each side just like just like in this hearing the last full day of that type of prep session was last Monday since then he's been just sort of working through other things and putting the finishing touches on his opening statement do you have Republican senators sitting with the nominee and pretending to be hostile Democratic senators he well and you had Orrin Hatch who was formerly the chairman of the Judiciary Committee chairing the the mock Judiciary Committee you also had Lindsey Graham who we heard from earlier he was involved as well Ok so when does this process get wrapped up assuming that it goes as Republicans would like it to go. The hearings would wrap up this week and then the Republicans hope to have a vote of the full Senate by the by the end of September because the new session starts next month a new Supreme Court stash session starts next month and they like to have in there so when Democrats think about the situation 50 Republicans and that's a majority $50.00 to $49.00 right now if they all stay together they confirm Brett Kavanaugh don't need a single Democrat do Democrats see any path by which they could block this nomination they don't see much of a path but they're they're going to fight the good fight on some level because their base wants it but also the Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer has basically given some of his more conservative state Democrats a pass to to make their own choices on this so it is an election year Tam thanks very much it is you're welcome N.P.R.'s Tamara Keith covers the White House. This is Morning Edition from n.p.r. News good morning I'm David Greene and I'm Steve Inskeep there is a big divide between older Americans who are ready for retirement and those who don't quite have the money our colleague Marilyn retired from her post as an n.p.r. Business editor and then she attended her 45th high school reunion in the Youngstown Ohio area it's a region where many old style middle class jobs have disappeared and that is now reflected in the lives of many retirees Here's what Marilyn found at the reunion the 1973 class of Memorial High School method and nice restaurant in one of Youngstown suburbs 7 miles from the hard luck area where our high school stands the classmates who showed up were by and large those who had gone to college and could afford the dinner $45.00 a person 90 a couple plus your drinks wait there is Mary. I caught up with friends especially the ones who like me had moved away for decrease in jobs I've lived in Ohio New York Georgia Massachusetts Washington d.c. And now back to Georgia my classmate Pete Nikolaus he was different he stayed close to home but he wasn't going to the class reunion so I stopped by a house to see how he was adjusting to retirement it's just a few miles from our high school in a rural area he has woods in the back yard and a fish stock pond in the front with cleared all the way in which he cleared to do if. I would be able to do it he loves living in the country he got bears we went inside the house the living room walls are decorated with mounted deer heads we sat at the kitchen table and flip through our old yearbook in high school I was a nerd focused on getting into Ohio State Pete was a bit of a smart alec but in a cool way everybody's worried about me cussing and everything else I could have said are. Capable of a civilized conversation our high school sat on a hill top be high. And at the Earth sloped away down to the valley where the young stand cheating Tube mill stretched out for Miles our school our town the air we breathe they were inseparable from those blast furnaces when there was smoke coming out of that valley people were being fed and kids were sent being sent to school at the time I was the one moving in a risk your direction by trying to be a writer a hit or miss job that may not provide a pension Pete made what seemed like the more secure choice go to steel mills. That's mind Muswell with my vision to go work install more force. That's the sound of the sheep to mill capture to an old government documentary film exactly the kind of noise secreted Pete when he started working there that summer of 1973 I didn't know what I was walking into I've never been in the order which crane is going overhead in flames and he the job was dangerous but weirdly satisfying in the still no I was ready to retire there I was sad you felt good you come out dirty I mean you did a good day's work and you feel good about it then came what everyone here calls Black Monday September 19th 1977 that was the day the young Stan cheating Tube announced it was shutting down 5000 people lost their job on that day including Pete they walked in a tortoise your dog there and it was not to make notice no didn't see nothing about it is coming towards goodbye and here's where our life stories really start to diverge I heard the news on the radio I was in my black Plymouth Duster driving back to Ohio State after finishing up an internship at the date newspaper I called Dayton added her and asked if I should go cover the still shut down he said Yes I got a front page story and a $50.00 check for it I made money on my hometown's calamity I'd go on to become a business news journalist these days I'm still editing and teaching part time white collar retirees can pad savings by doing sit down jobs has for Pete after Black Monday he worked in a van plant until that shut down to then an auto plant until he had to retire at 56 because of health problems I got a staph infection after one of my surgeries and that's what ended me. Heart it develops off my heart they had to take me back out again Pete walks with a cane he's also survived a cancer he says his doctors tell him it's likely linked to his best ison the mill his wife works cleaning houses to help pay the bills still Pete and his wife live a peaceful life he's glad he stayed 950 all I wanted around here I did when I wanted to do and I had a wife that supported me and she understood so Peters content but here's what bothers me seeing so many older Americans who work hard like Pete facing mounting medical bills lawmakers are talking about raising the Social Security retirement age by 2 or 3 years that could hit people like Pete people who worked so hard their bodies won't let them continue earning into their late fifty's it's funny how many of us new people relatives that had a missing fingers or missing leg I hadda my father's cousin was missing his leg a couple of guys from our church died in the mill I mean it was a tough life and it was it was a good life. You will never see again Pete doesn't want anyone feeling sorry for him and I respect that as for me when the reunion ended I flew away like always former n.p.r. Business editor Marilyn Chee wax. This was the scene outside as the 2 journalists left the courthouse following the verdict while alone and show so who were arrested in December and charged this is while they were investigating a massacre of 10 regarding the Muslims in the northern part of me and a judge has now a judge is now sends them to 7 years in prison that massacre took place during a crackdown by the Mian Maher Army sending hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fleeing into Bangladesh last week the un said the me and Maher military should be investigated for genocide we're joined now by Reuters regional editor for Asia Kevin Crowe Licky he works with the 2 journalists and was in the courtroom in the Me and Mark capital when the verdict was handed down I know this must be a very difficult day for your organization reprieve had you taken the time Welcome thank you it's a it's a disappointing day you know what what was the reaction in the courtroom. The courtroom the district court in Yangon was packed today even more than it has been this case has been followed closely by a number of diplomatic delegations within Myanmar and seen rightly as a watershed for for the free press and Myanmar. Halfway through the today's hearing the lights went out the room went dark shortly after the church read the verdict. That's heartbreaking moment for for a while on for the for their for their young families and for their colleagues just as the room went dark I mean that the lights went off was happening. The lights went out and we lost power it's it's not unusual it's happened before. But it happened as the as a verdict came down today that's so eerie like almost some kind of metaphor that I'm trying to sort of confront as you describe it. Can you just tell me remind me how your 2 colleagues were detained I mean the details of this case are pretty shocking. You know journalism you've had is not a crime that shouldn't be a political or controversial statement on Mars on Constitution safeguards of free press and in this case there was a real crime and you referenced but they were reporting at the time of their arrest in December on the mass killing of 10 boys sorry 10 men and boys and i Village called in den. A prosecution witness a police officer testified that he had been with other police when they talked about setting up while loans and Joe So in stopping this recording they were looking specifically at the involvement of Myanmar security forces in that telling . They met police contact who handed them documents they didn't solicit and never had time to read and shortly after they left that meeting on the outskirts of Yangon they were arrested that would that was the set up that you're describing even though they are now sentenced to prison kid can you just tell us the impact of the reporting that they were able to do. You know that there was a mass killing that would not have come to light had it not been for their reporting. Despite this attempt to stop that reporting and with their support we published that story. In February and. They believe and we have drawn strength from their their strength and all of us that the truth matters that facts matter. They're committed and professional journalists but they also believe that doing their jobs and reporting is their contribution their contribution to democracy. Not beyond Martin their way of securing a better future for the next generation speaking to Kevin chromakey who is the Reuters regional editor for Asia 2 of his colleagues have been sentenced to 7 years in prison after their reporting in Myanmar thanks so much for your time we appreciate it thank you tomorrow is primary day in Massachusetts and in one Democratic vote for Congress a veteran lawmaker faces a challenge from a rising star here's Anthony Brooks of w.b. You are this race represents among other things a generational split Michael kept you on who was 66 1st elected to Congress 20 years ago Ayana Presley is 44 1st elected to the Boston City Council 8 years ago and the 1st woman of color to serve on NAFTA. Presley campaigned in a black church in Boston where a group of senior citizens were about to head off on a Boston Harbor crudes I would you want to think of this is the love. I want to. Know what's in the sand a lot because the the very challenging thought wrestlers challenge is to convince voters across a district that includes a big part of Boston and its suburbs to expel an experienced progressive from Congress this is something unusual voters are not used to having a choice they haven't had a choice up in this congressional seat for a generation for 20 years Presley acknowledges that she kept you on a wood vote the same way on most if not all issues but she cast her self as a movement building candidate of change she says she has the perspective to represent the state's only majority minority district but this is but I think I understand our neighborhood better this is Joyce Harvey of Boston's Dorchester neighborhood who says Presley will focus on issues like gun violence domestic abuse and women's rights she's a female c.e.o. She will relate better to those things that yes. We have that so thank you all good . Thanks if Pressley is running on change Michael Capuano was running on his record of securing federal dollars to expand affordable housing and community health centers and public transportation on a muggy evening in Boston Kathy won all rallied with fellow Congressman Joe Kennedy whose great uncle John f. Kennedy once represented this part of the city. Rejects Presley's argument that she can better represent this increasingly diverse district I was raised in this district as well in this particular race I don't think anybody can match my long term reckon this contest differs in some key way from the Joe Crowley Alexandra Cortez race in New York unlike Crowley cap you want to is a progressive who favors single payer health care civil rights icon John Lewis among others have endorsed him and unlike Ocasio Cortez Presley a 3 term city councilor is not a political newcomer but she is part of a record surge of women and people of color running for Congress who say the Democratic Party must broaden its reach you know we are losing youth and women and people of color for the Democratic Party specifically Now why is that for his part Mike Capuano says he understands the challenge even welcomes I think to Donald Trump is good in a lot of people upset I think lightly so engendered a lot of activism of people I think that's a good thing the most recent polls suggest kept you on who has an edge in this White House but for Maryland foreman of Boston it represents a tough choice I know Captain want to solo and I think that he's always done really great work but I usually feel like it's time for change. News I'm David Greene and I'm Steve Inskeep when a building is destroyed by fire there are certain losses that even the best insurance policy cannot possibly replace and that is surely true at Brazil's National Museum in Rio de Janeiro a fire destroyed much of the 200 year old building and much of the artwork inside N.P.R.'s Philip Reeves is in Rio Hi Phil how did this fire start Well it started around 730 last night local time the museum was closed the building's a lot of wouldn't paper in it and stuff and so this flame spread with astonishing speed and engulfed much of the building and pretty soon the flames 30 foot high in a soaring up into the night sky the fire department says it got the blaze under control and around 3 am today aerial footage shows very considerable damage firefighters are actually still working through the building this morning and we don't know what the cause was yet Steve Yeah the images you see fire you see flame of virtually every window that doesn't seem to be any roof left there's flames and smoke coming out of the top of the building maybe nothing left but the stone walls what was in that museum. Oh it had a pretty impressive collection items not just of importance to Latin America but globally huge range of things you know from the world of arts who ology anthropology it was a collection of the chips and mommies. Greek and Roman treasures collected by emperors over the ages in 6 gather by jungle explorers and dinosaur bones and paintings and photographs and there was Lucy here that's the nickname given to the skeleton the remains of a woman who was found in a cave in Brazil in the 1970 s. She's an estimated 11500 years old and that makes one of the oldest human skeletons ever found in in the Americas goodness and I suppose if this fire broke out after closing there wouldn't even have been staff available to maybe grab the most valuable things and branded anything survive well the fire department says that they were able to save some pieces we don't know what the how much at this stage and we also do know Steve that not all of the collection was kept within the areas of the building that were consumed by fire so that's the good news but you know everyone has very very worried that much has been lost the President of Brazil Michel Tema has talked about an incalculable loss as he puts it that still quoting him destroyed 2000 years of research work and knowledge I'm just thinking of what a tragedy it would be if one of the buildings of the Smithsonian here in Washington were to burn down or the Met in New York City how are Brazilians responding well you know the fire was still in its fairly early stages when the recriminations started. Over the specific circumstances a spokesman for the fire department says that the 1st efforts to fight the blaze was slow because several fire hydrants near the museum didn't work so they had to get water from the nearby lake but there were also recriminations concerning the larger issues here the building was in terrible repair you know people are asking why. I was allowed to get that to laugh at dated the museum Staffa talk being chronically underfunded that thanks partly to Brazil's financial crisis which the country still struggling to recover from so this is getting political and of course there's a big election a presidential election next month and so it's bound to become an issue that 2 N.P.R.'s Philip Reeves is really is in Rio de Janeiro where the National Museum burned Philip thanks very much you're welcome. China announces more investment in Africa Marketplace Morning Report is supported by Progressive Insurance offering snapshot a device that adjusts insurance rates based on safe driving habits now that's progressive learn more progressive dot com or 1800 progressive many Americans are on holiday today for Labor Day But in China they are open for business especially business with Africa China's president Xi Jinping is hosting African leaders at a major summit in Beijing and encourage Chinese businesses to invest no less than 10000000000 dollars on the continent in the next 3 years for more on this I'm joined by Shawn Ryan founder and managing director of China market research group Good morning it's always good to seek with you Camberley thank you so much so what's the importance of this summit so it's key because China who are looking to show and demonstrate to Africa and the rest of the world that it now rivals America for superpower status so during this African summit President Xi announced today China is going to loan $60000000000.00 of financing to Africa to build out not just infrastructure projects like highways but also help promote Chinese companies to relocate their manufacturing to Africa president also mentioned that he did not want vanity projects what did he mean by that well there's been a lot of criticism especially in the Western press that China's just building up large bridges and highways that really aren't going to help the everyday African There's also criticism about environmental degradation and that too many of the Chinese projects are actually only hiring Chinese laborers and not local Africans so President she wants to demonstrate to his counterparts in Africa that he's serious about creating projects that are going to help jumpstart economies throughout Africa Sean Ryan thank you so much thank you for having me and Sean is director. Excuse me is managing director of the China market research group and joined us from Shanghai let's do the numbers. Markets are closed today for Labor Day United Farm Workers just elected its 1st female president the u.f.w. Says to race or Romero will be the 1st Latina and immigrant woman to lead a national union the now iconic Cesar Chavez started the group in the 1960 s. To advocate for farm laborers over the decades you have to w. Has called for better conditions for the agricultural workers who pick fruits and vegetables on farms primarily in the American West to race Romero steps into her new role in December Welcome to the program thank you very much Kimberly good morning good morning you're only the 3rd person to lead this organization 1st Cesar Chavez who led a great boycott in the 1960 s. To advocate for better conditions then his son in law Arturo Rodriguez you start at the end of the year what are the top issues of your focus in my number one issue right now is immigration reform it is affecting their record troll industry tremendously and last year we had here in California overtime for farm workers after 8 hours and these is something that we're going to be working at the national level there are also some nuts and bolts issues things like automation and low union membership across the country how do you plan to keep United Farm Workers relevant in the future you know I don't mation is sometimes seen as a negative but I think we need with growers we have dinner and that automation is something that they're trying to bring into the farms. To improve their work into production now is not necessarily you can have a place from workers to produce or food and when he comes to membership you know we don't measure membership just by how many members we have but how many people we impact when we pass in California the Hito is protection and over time we did not only affect our members it affected every single from working time for the last year the union was hit with the $1000000.00 judgment brought by organizers who said they were underpaid How is that and the effect in the organization you know unfortunately the judge made a decision that we 100 percent disagree with organizers are x m 2 employees and we believe that everybody needs to be paid fairly and we do that as you get started do you anticipate spending more time sort of navigating Washington politics or more grassroots organizing you know our main focus are the farm workers and I actually have been the last 2 or 3 weeks spending a lot of time with some workers listening to them understanding you know what it is that would like to see every victory that we have chatting in are going to say should have banned because of the leadership of our members and we definitely want to continue to try to Romero is the newly elected president of the United Farm Workers thank you so much thank you very much for having me Marketplace Morning Report is supported by price offering a strategic investing approach that examines investment opportunities 1st hand institutions advisers employers and individuals choose to. Much Anymore many schools in the u.s. Now start earlier so for students summer break ends earlier marketplaces Renate Sago has more on how this shift affects Labor Day travel and tourism that I see it as man's a concierge booth inside the Best Western Hotel right off Orlando's main tourist strip International Drive I said the case for a photo to get try shows and rent a car she's helped thousands of travelers coming and going enter 22 years here but she says Labor Day weekend now kicks off a slow season until December because if people come back though they cheated come back to the school once the last blast of summer Labor Day weekend has kind of become be unpopular cousin of summer holidays the AAA even stopped making Labor Day travel projections 4 years ago a spokeswoman Jeanette cast Llano says just how many take to the roads or hop on a plane to make a mini vacation out of Labor Day weekend depends on when the holiday falls if we're talking into August early September like this year it can be busier you know warmer weather people are still hanging on to summer and if Labor Day weekend falls deeper into September even fewer travelers so no official report on how many people will be out there but higher gas prices are likely to say go for Marketplace in Washington I'm a Kimberly Adams with the Marketplace Morning Report.
