Officials say the blast targeted police near the voting center Islamic state group said it carried out the attack in the province of Western Baluchistan the party of the former cricketer Imran Khan is challenging that of the ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif the election campaign has been marred by violence and I guess ations of military interference Secunda come on e is in Islamabad the western province a blow to stun is the same place where nearly 150 people were killed in another attack by militants just under 2 weeks ago that suicide attack targeting a political rally now security has been in the lead up to this vote over 370000 troops have been deployed across the country hundreds of thousands of police officers to rescue workers in Greece are searching for large numbers of missing people after one fall swept across vast areas near Athens killing at least 79 people the prime minister likes to see prances declared 3 days of mourning the offer to suspend some class may have been started deliberately Nikki Panag up a lost lives close to the seaside resort of mercy east of Athens which was devastated by the farmers she said she barely made it out alive it was something really bad it was so quickly that. American Airlines and Cathay Pacific have become the latest international carriers to bow to Chinese demands to change the way they referred to Taiwan the Chinese civil aviation authorities road to dozens of global airlines early this year giving a deadline of Wednesday to remove from their websites any information suggesting the island was not far to China Taiwan which is a democracy has been self-governing since the end of the Chinese Civil War almost 70 years ago but Beijing still views it as a renegade province to be reunited with the mainland. News. This is Dan Damon with world update from the b.b.c. In London coming up on our program some of the very special challenges facing female candidates in Zimbabwe's elections how is it that 46 I'm very old way too old in my party president is 6 years younger than I am and is celebrated most for his youth more on that coming soon we'll look at another election before that this one in Pakistan and a blast near approaching station in the city of Quite has killed more than 30 people as millions of voting in a general election amid tight security officials say the blast targeted police near the building voting center there's nomic state group said it carried out the attack and elsewhere minor blasts and clashes between probably workers left one dead and several injured the probably of the former cricketer Imran Khan is challenging that of ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif he was jailed earlier this month after being convicted of corruption I've been speaking to the B.B.C.'s Kamandi he's in the capital Islamabad just an apology for the quality of the line Oh you can hear everything that 600 tells us this appears to be in a suicide attack carried out in the city of Cueto in the western province of Baluchistan targeting a police official outside a polling station Baluchistan was also the size of another very large attack just under 2 weeks ago by the Islamic state group which killed nearly 150 people these attacks have overshadowed the election campaign to an extent there's also been another number of other attacks on candidates for example However we haven't seen the same level of violence that we have in previous elections notably the last elections in 2013 where many political parties simply want a better campaign because they were being targeted so frequently by suicide attacks what have been the issues during the campaign where the key. In this campaign it seems to be a question over whether the Pakistani military which is directly controlled the country. Of this existence is behind the scenes now trying to manipulate the results of it the allegation from the ruling party and their supporters a number of human rights clues is that the Pakistani army is trying to fix the results in favor of the party led by opposition politician Imran Khan and they say that the army has been doing that by pressurising. To defect down on journalists who are seen as sympathetic to the polity. Deny that Imran Khan has said that these claims are simply an attempt by the pm to distract from the corruption allegations against the party and against the party's leadership. For an investigation against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif which saw him being sentenced to 10 years in jail by 90 corruption courts earlier this month so in many ways this election is almost a kind of referendum on that case again and these allegations against the pm. To. Really being the man for the middle to establishment that his sit in in front of the parliament. Would have brought him to power engineer de dismissal. Time yes there are you do logic he's very. Celebrated nationalist sometime people who. I think this is a misrepresentation of. The ideas that he stands for. The. Person but yes preferred to a certain extent because of the ideals that he stands for and I know you're a critic of Imran Khan for all that said about him and his alleged. Point from the military he does have a lot of popular support along with a lot of young people come out to his rallies and he's a break from the do nasty politics that have dominated Pakistan for a long time isn't it Alpha course that's all very good the fact of the matter is he coming to your question is whether the military is running the show from behind the strength Absolutely because look at how Iran pawn defends all the policies that a pro military for example an excessive military budget and look at what led up to it Sparky was effectively you know pulled out of the you know running Graceland they're really struggling because the politicos you know victimization that we see clearly I mean they're being put out on technical grounds health care is that and how democratic is that so what we've seen in this election is competing narratives from the p.c.i. They've achieved the chairman of being a corrupt party they pointed to the case of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who is being disqualified and earlier this month sentenced to 10 years in jail from the from the p.l.o. Inside they claim that they're the victims of a conspiracy by the military establishment just finally quickly from both of you your predictions on on who will win but I think today people will decide on end of the day before the end of they will probably find out you know whether which narrative carries the day a narrative that is return what just to a friend off allegations of corruption or an oddity that is changing the status quo in this country I think for a status quo I think it's a moot you know and the fact is that you know whoever is going to bring the ordinary to back is be in power that's so Ari Imtiaz goes Speaking to come on in Islam about the polls close in about 2 and a half hours time South Korea sending an emergency relief team to love soccer a partially built collapsed inundating nearby villages South Korean companies are involved in the construction project a local official in the area says about half of the 6000 people made homeless by the flood are still awaiting rescue this is now 2 days after the flood struck 19 bodies have so far been recovered. I've been speaking to m. Is a waiter an affair she is the Reuters deputy bureau chief for Time and and Indo-China She's based in Bangkok She's covering the story from there using contacts I asked her what information is she getting about the villages what condition of the n we're getting very little information from the ground or on the ground because of the remoteness of this area it's in the very southernmost part of the house but what we are seeing from the pictures on state media and the videos coming out it is basically total devastation in the areas around we understand from experts that 7 villages have been submerged the latest official figures $1000.00 people confirmed dead and we've seen many villagers trying to escape the rising floodwaters by getting up onto the roofs of houses and getting into a rickety wooden boats as well but help has been slow to reach these villages because of the difficulties of getting there do we know what happened to the dam Why did it collapse Well the official version from the company the South Korean company that is eating this construction project is that the heavy rains caused the dam to overflow now at the same time we have environment rights groups saying the reservoirs were not managed properly that the water should have been released and managed better release gradually particularly because it is the monsoon season in Laos and because they should know to expect heavy rain but yes the official version is the water overflowed causing the day to collapse does it seem that international help is going to be essential Well that has been offered international help that's been offered help from many regional partners including Thailand Singapore has offered help South Korea but so far no word from the government about whether it will accept any of this international assistance which it desperately needs. And the scale of the disaster it seems that we're still learning that 19 dead might not be anywhere near the number of those finally found to have perished Yes indeed it could be much higher than that we know that 3000 people are waiting to be rescued but of course the whereabouts of those people are largely unknown an official that I spoke to this morning a lot of government official said dozens could be dead and the death toll could be much much higher but again because of the secretive nature of this government and the slow release of news coming out of Laos we just don't know at the moment to what the big picture is why is lives building so many dams. Well Laos for years has had ambitions it's a landlocked country it's a poor country with the many natural resources adult's disposal and one of them is watcher and has some patience to become the battery of Asia that's building these lands because it wants to sell the energy mostly to neighboring countries power hungry neighboring countries such as Thailand so that our government is pushing ahead with these dams most of them funded by fine countries China South Korea Thailand and hopes that this will be an income generator for the state and so it's a lever from the Reuters bureau in Thailand women make up the majority of the population in Zimbabwe but only about 15 percent of the parliamentary candidates in the elections coming on the 30th of July are women the b.b.c. Has been meeting with 2 aspiring legislators fighting to change attitudes Here's a New Yorker reporting from Harare. She called back of rural area with cattle drawn carts and trolls little has changed here in 38 years Dr c. Kinds in the makes a campaign stop. Or that it was that it was these women were disillusioned by decades of empty promises they big the former international development experts to stand for office you've done a bore hole for us in this village you've got a feeding saying before us in the pits we need an m.p. Like you who stays among the people and I didn't take it seriously at all I say. It's too difficult. And he didn't and I was a fine as you know it's a typical response political violence ridicule and more subtle forms of. Sexism has kept women on the fringes within that cultural center in the village I tend to drive a lot of power from We've been the tradition and when we move again from the village into Calumet something has happened to spin a fragment tension in the in the sharing of power if you like. In 2013 the number of women in parliament doubled to 35 percent thanks to a new quota system but attitudes are slow to change the way I was earlier this year and enraged a group in so called presidential candidate took was on equal pay it was they chanted hooting the local Woodfull hall prostitute after she challenge Nelson Chamisa his right to take over the party was going to be the last was. She said Mudgal May has organized one of the final days she's standing as an independent after she was asked to give up the m.d.c. Seat for a younger woman. Ah. That's the 1st thing that comes to my mind and. So the irony is that it's said that the young lady is the new generation of my party president who happens to be 14 years old so here I was wondering how is it that at 46 I'm old in very old way too old in my party president is 6 years younger than I am and his integrated most for his youth. Was a both just since the kind believe that securing wins will help to reverse the stereotypes that. To new to point women in this country. Are reporting from Harare will provide more coverage on that direction coming in Zimbabwe here on the b.b.c. This is well done. The Chinese government has set a deadline this week for airlines to refer to Taiwan as part of China on their websites and advertising a professor of Chinese politics tells us the possible reasons for the pub the People's Republic demanding such a change I suspect part of the way of reacting against the latest provocations from the trumpet ministration with ratcheting up trade wars and tariffs more on that coming soon and our headlines just now dozens of people have been killed by militants in Pakistan as voters go to the polls to choose a new government rescue workers in Greece are trying to locate missing people after a devastating wildfires near Athens We'll have more on that later and as you just said American Airlines has changed the way it refers to Taiwan after pressure from China this is the b.b.c. . This is Dan Damon in London it's early as recently closed its port those ships rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean that's a move that means the western Mediterranean route to Spain is now the most popular for those trying to reach Europe more people have arrived so far this year than in the whole of 2017 on that route setting off from the shores of Morocco they take enormous risks trying to cross the sea on flimsy boats are Europe correspondent I mean Grammaticus reports from the Strait of Gibraltar. And. Even the radio Spanish coast guard sending alerts to the inflatable to get up to 50 migrants crammed aboard is adrift in the Straits of Gibraltar. Was. The Spanish rescue craft is being tossed on the way dangerously close to a cargo ship crossing one of the world's busiest shipping lanes on visit. The children many adults a pulled on to the rescue. Pam the Spanish just serious right next to Gibraltar their. Mission Morocco and Algeria are separated out Spain has special agreements with their countries to send them back to London to buses to be deported with they now feel some foreign countries are now to stay and make asylum application so I left slumped on the quay side is. Very Coast she's exhausted cradling the little girl in her last. 5 years old tells me she's doing this so has her can have a future. 29 also from mine where it comes. To music in my country nothing works so I made the decision to sacrifice my life my parents don't even know how I feel I have no choice. The Who to listen to the civil trial center now just seriously scan the straight With cameras mounted on the Spanish coast Rocco is so close you can see it across the world. The nasty business lunch. And you cool come easy Spanish fishing boat spotted in the the teams a scramble to get some new tenant fronted says they getting up to 10 calls a day like this now and by using more and more flimsy crocked even paddling in achieves and children's inflatable. On their way out. This year the numbers are picking up a lot most rescues take place in the area near. Many sub-Saharan Africans boats with paddles. There are. There were all astonished patrolling the one side of me I could see the sins of the other side the Spanish and of into coincidence Europe and Africa and the closest point here there are trinket since Frank ships passing through the straits here but with the 2 live here says so close this is the new ship the migration the birds making the crossing or running using even though the waves can be high and the winds can be strong here. Here's. What he. Wants something still is here the city of Tunji is perched on the northern tip of Morocco where the pressure is coming. To reach across the Mediterranean if you come up from the people are trying to reach Europe this way. On the edge of Tangiers we find a group of around 20 men living rough trying to avoid the police security. Does its best to intercept the migrant boats number 2 from Mali shows me the storm drains they sleep in. The men he had come from all across West Africa. To do. Was already spent 3 years trying to get to your. House and how many times he tried to cross the strike. At $44.00 times each time brought back no we don't have any money even. Other suspend salary you from Senegal has tried 7 times over funny vs he's now given up but watches over the others leaving raising the alarm when their boats get into trouble. If you're lucky the Spanish Navy rescues you know if you're unlucky as the Moroccans you come back here try to recover and fun to string together again. On the Spanish site the beach balls are full of summer holiday makers taking selfies as the sun is setting over the Brule sandy beach Europe with all its wealth is the irresistible drool for the mind. To men start improvising some flamenco. Roots of a song. And you will get the nation driving the boat loads and truly this Self. Same Informatica us reporting an audio recording of a conversation between Donald Trump and his formal lion Michael Cohen has been broadcast by the American t.v. Network c.n.n. The 2 men can be heard discussing making a payment to a Playboy model or at least to the publishers we can listen to a portion of that tape in the recording it appears Mr Cohen a Mr Trump talking about how to make a payment to David Pecker he's a friend of Mr Trump says the owner of the tabloid National Enquirer which have previously bought the rights to the story of Ms McDougal then did not publish that story a meter company says the transfer in phone records. Friend dated him so that I couldn't do that right away and actually come to me and I've spoken to Alan. About how to set the whole thing up with. That yes. And it's. All the stuff because you never know with accompanying him where he's going he's a rock so I'm all over that and I spoke down about it when it comes time for the financing which will be. Why. I got. So no I got this is the audio was secretly recorded by Mr Cohen 2 months before the presidential election in presidential election 2016 it was handed to c.n.n. By Michael Cohen's lawyer Lanny Davis Mr Trump has insisted that he did nothing wrong we can speak to Robert constant national political reporter for The Washington Post What's the significant of significance of apparently and the only oh isn't absolutely clear but there's significance of apparently Donald Trump saying pay cash the significance is the timing of all this it came during the final stretch of the presidential election and it shows that then candidate Donald Trump was well aware that his lawyer Michael Cohen was working with David Pecker who was running the National Enquirer at American Media Incorporated about these payments and Rudy Rudy Giuliani who is no Donald Trump's lawyer says that this clears his client I spoke to Mayor Giuliani at length in the last 24 hours he argues that the president was just being made aware of the Kerik Dougal payment by Mr Cullen But Mr Trump does not seem surprised at all by this conversation so that point by Giuliani will certainly be debated in the coming days I one point is that hope picks when she was speaking on behalf of Donald Trump said we have no knowledge of this. This is a campaign that repeatedly denied having any kind of knowledge of Karen McDougal of any kind of payment by Michael Cohen But what we're finding through the course of the reporting and the existence of this tape is that Donald Trump has had awareness on several levels for a long time about different things Michael Cohen was up to Will this change anything with those who support Donald Trump it's hard to save it will change his base his political base remains with him polls show Republican voters very much remain supportive of President Trump However with the Paul man afore trial beginning in the United States as former campaign chairman facing money laundering charges now Michael Cohen the president's close advisor facing legal scrutiny and release you know tapes signaling cooperation with federal have not made a difference Robert thank you Robert Costa from The Washington Post. News. Hello this is Dan Damon with world update from the b.b.c. Coming up why ancient treason laws might be use in the issue of how to deal with those former Britons they've lost their citizenship has been taken away who went off to fight for ISIS that's coming later 1st more than 70 people are known to have been killed in wildfires in Greece almost 200 others have been injured the flames ripped through coastal resorts near Athens at the peak of the holiday season here's a report from James Reynolds. You can see how close safety was for a lot of people here in Marty this street which is entirely burned out there charred cars on either side is just about 100 meters away from the ocean I can see it past a couple of burnt down trees and of course for years people here thought that this is the thing that would save. If there was a forest fire they would simply get to the sea some of them managed to do so. Can you tell me your name. And the thing it is I had the feeling that I can do almost nothing just that. They were flames everywhere even close to the sea. I was trying to develop my right to survive them and it will be again did you believe what you were saying no I don't really believe that I mean this is. The police have cordoned off one area in this resort. And I can just see in the distance several people still searching through the ground in this is where more than 20 people huddled as they were trying to escape. And they all died. The authorities here trying to make sure they've gone through every piece of ground here. And I you know to stop the loss stands next to a car with bones. On the right side of his body he's come back to find out what happened to his wife. When the father came the couple were together with their 3 year old son from the 6th. To the see my. Right here. Before. I left to see. I think. The last thing you said to. The. Strange about the. Speed of the 5 is just some trees being completely down. The road all those completely untouched just looking straight ahead it's the pine trees green and untouched suggesting that the fly. Over them and hit the cars and hit the buildings. So the residents here seen if. This is. Anything. Goes. And right side your house because I can see that the trees are right. After everything. The night you couldn't get out and you couldn't get to the sea is no way from your house and all because there were very many cars that were back they had very much explosions and we didn't move I saw all the people running to the sea and I said if you're going to do anything because you could not pass. All of these trees that were burning and all of these guys that went out and exploding that decision to stay inside save your family's life. I guess that this is young kept my family safe what do you feel when you look around and see all this. I can tell you what I feel I'm here 45 years but I'm glad that we stayed alive and I know how serious they can see. In the book but this. James Reynolds speaking to the survivors of the fire we can speak. Of marathon that's a town which is on a hilltop very close to some of the worst hit areas what's the latest where you are . Unfortunately or because I was 2 or 3 West and then the missing pilot on these 2 places. Who ended from the fire. It's in the limits of the municipality and Monte is the one where I think how many how how many homes would you say have been destroyed. We were still counting because with. All of that the people that. Burnt all the drowned because. A missing 14 people at least 14 people still missing 4044 people still missing Yes and almost 80 already burnt and we don't know how many there are drowned because they jump to the sea and it was very windy and we don't know how many they're drunk. Or so we have a very big problem to recognize about this because they're burned. It's like calls about this. And it's not very difficult to know if. It's one body or tool. You know that's not yeah do exactly what I was to an old holding each other or whether it's one exactly. Like. Situation yeah terrible terrible and what's needed now is you still need help to recover I think of course of course what sort of the most useful. It's in every you know every aspect for example in the same time that we're looking at which I live in which is that where he's missing we have to do all. The job to every house immediately. We have people that are homeless with waiting straining soaked with nothing. But thank God you know Greeks are very quick and get together in that kind of conditions and we have many many volunteers of very many people helping and the minister of the Ministry of. I'm afraid the line broke but I'm sure you're going to say the ministry a central ministry would be were helping Metz in August thank you speaking to us from that minister you mentioned us appellate excuse me of Marathon Let's turn to another subject the American Airlines Group has become the latest international carrier to comply with the Chinese demand to change the way it refers to Taiwan Beijing and says that Taiwan's part of China of course and it objects to suggestions that it's a separate country so Beijing's demanded airlines refer to Taiwan as a Chinese destination on all their websites and abbots other major airlines around the world including Love turns from scale among contests have already complied I spoke to Peter Morrissey is chief economist at flight ascend an aviation consultancy The issue is really about the presentation of websites and so for an alliance like left hand an American Airlines ultimately do they for the sake of 2 words on a website actually want to lose large cohorts the traffic invariably is going to be no so it's just a question of in the case of Bush Airways I think they put something down and that Taiwan dashed China that's enough so are you really going to make a point and lose a whole host of revenue and as a consequence of just not putting dash China is there more damage here that might affect both Taiwan and the support that some of its business is give to mainland China I think from the point of view of aviation aviation business it really is about whether those words rain or not on publications and websites and so on in terms of the presentation of the concept of Taiwan to the outside world and from that point of view it is just something that is what it says on the tin it just is change the words and that's acceptable do you see. Chinese based China base airlines taking over from the United States as the largest carrier certainly if you look at the under projection of rates of growth of the domestic traffic in the u.s. For example growing at 12 percent also a year and the Chinese growing at double digit percentages it's a question of you know by what definition you would say Chawner overtakes America but it's only card to the moment I mean what we've seen over the years is that for that Chinese market say the Chinese market to America Chinese market to Europe that used to be rather more dominated by the foreign carriers now you're seeing the pendulum swing back so it's rather more 5050 between them and in truth if you look at the actual age of the fleet and so on then the Chinese carriers have generally got the new rock raft and I consultant Peter Morris and then I spoke to Julia Strauss is professor of Chinese politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London how would China enforce its demand i.r.s. China enforces this kind of threat I saying reasonably often it's perspective that everyone agrees that there's only one China and Taiwan is part of China and that this is simply making people publicly comply with what are the formal diplomatic position is and what everyone knows to be true and what happens to those airlines that don't comply well the fear of course is that China will start to take away with a pretty roots cancel landing rights refused permissions and and basically choke off the major international carriers that have routes into Chinese cities they don't comply I might that happen to United and America they are the only ones now refusing to do this name change to be fair. They're United and American I thought were actually in a way being quite reasonable by saying look we're not going to comply or not comply this is not really our business this is a political issue and a political decision and we think this needs to be sorted out at a government to government level actually the very very latest to come out at least been has been reported in the last couple of hours is that American has begun to change over its designation of Taiwan on its official website and United is expected to comply Ah and to go over to this sometime in the next couple of days 23000000 people living in Taiwan 1000000000 and a half on the mainland of China business links with Taiwan useful to the Chinese mainland economy why do this why keep punishing Taiwan I think there are a lot of different streams that feed into this the 1st is over all China's more assertive of foreign diplomacy under siege in Ping I suspect that part of it is also a way of reacting against the latest publications from the trumpet ministration with ratcheting up of trade wars and tariffs and so forth and so on and some of it may very well be aimed not so much of punishing Taiwan but punishing that's when government here which is a Democratic Progressive Party government it's a leftist government that has historically have been associated with the party that has in the past talked about Taiwan independence it certainly is more Taiwanese oriented than China oriented and so I suspect this is a way. Trying to punish that signing when government not so much necessarily punishing Taiwan as Julian Strauss from the School of Oriental and African Studies What does treason mean to you a bait to the edge a traitor's gracious lord that would reduce these bloody days again and make poor England weep in streams of blood that their not live to taste this lands increase that would with treason in this their lands peace Shakespeare's version of treason in Richard the 3rd Well there's a recommendation by some members of Parliament and I could then make the treason laws should be used to deal with those British people who joined Islamic state to fight against Britain and its allies and we can speak to one of those the parliamentarian Tom took on that thanks so much indeed for being with us on World update Why is treason which I think these laws come from the Middle Ages Why is that valid now when it's not and this report that I've written for Policy Exchange says that the treason laws there so you quoted Shakespear remembering are not valid and actually what we need to do is update the 13th 51 act that was written to protect the king and his line and change it for modern age we need to look at the laws of treason of Australia and New Zealand which you know recent years and remember the treason or rather the trial which is a rather more appropriate what is the attempt to divide communities and to undermine the state from within and that means that treason is an attack on all of us on top of the violence that may or may not result from it those who are found guilty of terrorism end up in jail there are laws covering these kind of activities were why is a new treason nor applicable well. Camels and the preparation instigation of terrorism or encouragement of terrorism are rightly focused on the violence they're focused on. Physical harm against against people but there is a supplementary crime in a crime that everybody recognizes and we all we all know is a wrong and that wrong is the trail of the breach of the Jews we have a citizens one to another and that recognition that we have duties as well as rights you know the rights we recognize we all know like education and health care and things like that but also the rights of creative move assembly and expression and religion are balanced with duties nose duties are that you see not to seek to undermine each other not seek to weaken each other and those duties. Are true whether we side with terror groups like ISIS or whether we start side with hostile states as some people may have done in terms of undermining democracy or indeed backing cyberattacks term to going down thank you from the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee this is World update. Let me tell you what's on the top and on years from at the moment dozens of people killed by militants in Pakistan as voters go to the polls to choose a new government and American Airlines has changed the way it refers to Taiwan after pressure from China. The top stories the African nation of Djibouti in East Africa in the Horn of Africa is home to about a 1000000 people but that is where China has decided to build its 1st overseas military base it's all about location Djibouti sits on vitally important shipping routes those that had north to Europe those who go west to the Persian Gulf and Asia and south down the coast of Africa a number of other countries have already set up bases there Africa Security Correspondent Tommy a lot of pro travel to Djibouti to get a sense of what China's new military presence means that the government of the central conducting our national numbers. As you touched down and it's clear that this is no ordinary airport as you step out of the plane we see the stars and stripes flapping in the wind next to the u.s. Military aircraft parked in Camplin money yeah that's the u.s. Is only Pamela military base in Africa France Italy and Japan also have bases here really done so for years without much fanfare until another power moved in just down the road on the the in August last year China opened its new facility in Djibouti it already has 2000 troops involved in peacekeeping across Africa but this is its 1st official military base outside China to this. Straight ahead of us. Transition it's a vast base it's a naval base so the Chinese prefer to call it a logistics base and when there is it's believed it can host about $10000.00 pass and now it's not clear exactly how many are there right now. But this is. Running its military operations to support a lot of its investments across Africa China's economic activity in Africa has raised eyebrows for some time now but it's the entry of its military that has most Americans Djibouti is a very strategic location for us not only Africa but Centcom special operations command you can transcribe we all use that location so it's very very important to us the head of the u.s. Africa Command General Thomas testified before a congressional hearing back in March we are not naive to think that some of the activities the Chinese are doing in terms of counterintelligence there are taking place but it just means that we have to be. Cautious we have to be on guard for that type of situation and it didn't take long for the squabbling to begin. Our service members and. China in April the Pentagon accused China of pointing military grade lasers at their planes in at least 10 separate incidents as they flew in the area that's the Chinese just Chinese nationals that are. Beijing has rejected the claims. One incident takes place having all these military tenants is lucrative for Djibouti So it's caught in the middle of this round. The foreign minister it's in the best interest. To avoid those frictions continue to happen and whenever we hear something we call them we discuss and we try to find them for that problem if it happens but China has been outspending the u.s. In Djibouti building ports shopping malls and soccer stadiums and that counts for something China for you would be a strong. A party that is ready to put billions of dollars in infrastructure that's not something common or usual you cannot find other partners ready to do so and that's what worries the Americans Djibouti is massively indebted to China if Djibouti defaults on the loans what might China demand in compensation could it jeopardize America's presence in Djibouti to if you buy and hold on to it you'll be a useful Chinese state television broadcast images of troops carrying out a live fire drill at their new base in Djibouti the day goes with the looming food a professor at the China Defense University thinks this is the beginning of a new era of China's global military expansion Ormont don't want. Help with China I will certainly have. Many trade bases not coming there will be the 2nd . Military bases being built over so yes of course China's overseas bases are different to the American was the u.s. Spirit's military bases for the purpose of controlling the world whereas China period's bases to safeguard its overseas interests and for global peace the u.s. And China will keep meeting elsewhere in the world and how they handle that could be determined by how they're conducting themselves now in this tiny state in the Horn of Africa a lot of Po in Djibouti November the 11th this year will mark 100 years since the armistice that ended the 1st world war at this time in July 100 years ago it was so that the war would continue in the minds of most when Churchill for example was planning for some kind of victory in 1919 where we know that in the end the Germans collapsed from about July or August so the same scenery is there to be marked and a very special commemorate. Because bell ringers are required with us is Dr Virginia Crompton with the ringing remembers campaign explain the campaign please don't thank you yes a ringing remembers is that collaboration with the Ministry of communities housing and local government and the Central Council of Churches bring is a big ideas and we are working to honor the 1400 bell ringers who actually gave their lives during the 1st World War 2 authentically commemorate the armistice so that you have got in front of me some of the minutes from the wall cabinet on the 11th of November 1918 and as they realize the armistice was signed one of their we know only like 5 comments is that church bells should be rung throughout the kingdom to tell people so it's really capturing that moment again we're inviting people to come forward as recruits to ring in remembers we're looking for 1400 recruits ring on the Armistice Day Centennial really on the 11th of November 28th scene and then of course once they've learnt to ring we're really hoping that they'll bring new blood if you like into the bell ringing family in the u.k. Did the Americans ring bells as well on the Armistice Day Do you happen to know or I don't happen to know that but actually when I'm there was a version of the state so they might you know the changing is uniquely British So there are about 5000 changed halves in the u.k. And outside the u.k. I think there are less than 200 put together there are some in the USA and also the British and German governments are working together to make this an international moment so I think that the invitation to ring bells whether or not it's the kind of British change ringing traditional other bells I think it's a huge opportunity for the whole world to get involved because the Belgians have Caroline's don't they those wonderful things where you play with your fist their own many many ways to ring bells absolutely are seeing pitches of bells and temples in India I mean there are it's a universal. Art of Life I think that the world special in the British context is that it's changing and that we can actually look back at those 1400 people and remember them and how they rang and what that meant to them but throughout the world bells are a way of celebrating and communicating and we'll hear some of those in just a minute but your vision is to get history out there amongst the people absolutely I think that you know as a as a particular way to look at the 1st World War bell ringing it's very special it was very well because you see people not through that professional through the battle they fought in 03 which regiment they were in you see them as private people who actually chose to volunteer and had a hobby and it was bell ringing and that's really moving and when you look at those individuals you see their families I mean I'm looking at a beautiful photograph of a man who was a bell ringing from Yorkshire in the north of England and he died 100 years ago on Saturday and he was 36 when he died and was named as his name was John Jackson his wife was called and they and his children were Katherine and Gibson and through seeing his life as a bearing you see him as a private person you see the humanity of the individual and I think that's where commemorations really important it's remembering the loss and the humanity of all those who died in the war and of course it brings to light those tragedies if you like that the war was reaching and perhaps a conclusion about people who are still going up they are absolutely yes when we look at the the lists the roles of honor for the bell ring as you see so many in November 1900 would you know thank you very much indeed for coming in Virginia Crompton let's hear those bells to bring us to the end of this edition of World update please join us tomorrow. We're doing it up when they style our high plains morning today.
