Dodgers in the National League Championship Series the l.c.s. Starts tonight I'm Dave Anthony Fox News Radio. This edition of American life is presented by a very proud science this is an ag life on power talking 967 and am 1400 here is Clint good morning value this is Acholi My name is Bob with you for the next hour we're talking about agricultural production here in the valley and all across the country going to start off with a look at what's going on with the NAFTA talks President Trump called Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau a quote great friend as tensions rise amidst the North American Free Trade Agreement to go she Asians this week however a Bloomberg News report saying that Trump showed no signs of retreating regarding NAFTA saying quote It's possible we won't be able to make a deal and it's possible we will farm an industry groups where raising alarms this week amidst plans for agriculture negotiations during the current round of discussions NAFTA talks continue this is the 4th round of the NAFTA renegotiation all friends all eyes on California wildfires and maybe getting some help from the weather Stephanie host starts. Soft this morning out of the u.s.d.a. Don't count on Mother Nature to help California put out its wildfires during the next week we expect 0 measurable rainfall throughout California so we're not going to really tamp down this wildfire threat and till we get those seasonal soaking rains moving into the state that was us meteorologist Brad Rippy even though we have a cold front passing through the state mid week there are going to be more gusty winds across northern and central California through Thursday he describes much of California's pastures as rather brown and flammable where we have seen the wildfires in California 75 percent tops all moisture very short to short reflective of just how dry the surface conditions are where we get those fires starting there will be a spell of cooler temperatures but forecasts call for the hot dry weather to return next week which only enhances the wildfire risk this is Stephanie how for the u.s. Department of Agriculture in Washington d.c. Friends coming up on Ag live today we're going to take a look at rural connectivity what we're talking about well Internet high speed Internet it's been called a utility and that pretty much puts it in line with water service and electricity service however a lot of rural America still cannot get high speed Internet we're going to talk more about that coming up in just a little bit also the farm bill listening sessions have wrapped up we'll hear more on that as well be hearing from mud Cooper Coming up also Patrick Kavanagh will be joining us Bill Baker along as well Bill with us a couple times talking dairy and talking cattle report That's all ahead on Ag life . Limbaugh we are honest and truthful and we're right about there were you know if you were really interested in being born and rather tricking people into going along with this we wanted to make it up with a little light we wanted to take our we do know we're right our talk. We're happy to know where we're here our top 600. This is ag life on power Talk 967 and I am 2980 when you're a farm news being brought you know my Fresno Madera Farm Credit or on power Talk 967 am 1400 and being heard around the world this morning on i Heart Radio friends damage estimate still coming in from the hurricanes that swept ashore 3 times now the Florida Department of Agriculture said this past week the damages to the state's beef cattle industry are estimated that $237.00 and a half $1000000.00 in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma Florida surveys cattle ranchers after the Category 4 hurricane hit that state and found more than 100 dead animals reported along with 187000 tabs waiting to be shipped out of state to out of state feedlots forage crops severely damaged in Florida as well so the price tag for that hurricane continues to crawl higher North American Free Trade Agreement may have a new partner and that's Britain strike France if the North American Free Trade Agreement survives the renegotiation effort the United Kingdom may be interested in joining in the pact Reuters London reports Britain could join a formal trade alliance with the United States Canada and Mexico if the European Union refuses to finalized a post Breck's it trade deal by 2019 Reuters said that if Britain did join NAFTA exports to the e.u. And North America would have to produce goods in accordance with 2 separate sets of rules though according to trade analyst Britain whose regulation has been within the e.u. For over 40 years what also have to shift towards the North American model for trade that comes as the b.b.c. Reports the profitability of the average u.k. Farm could be cut in half. After the Breck's it exits House Agriculture Committee recently held its 6th and final farm bill listening session in upstate New York friends Committee chairman Conway said the listening sessions in New York along with the other 5 were invaluable to the committee now disaster recovery programs are a big part of the farm bill Conaway is looking at the possibility of getting some immediate help for farmers and ranchers in Texas and Florida at the same time they're trying to put together the most effective disaster recovery program they can and move that into a new farm bill what are going to do right now what are we going to do right now they're waiting on the farm bill which generally takes effect and then payments would be in 2019 that's way too far to address what's going on right now so the question is how do we get that supplemental that was just dropped last night I'm not had a chance to look through to see Jackie what's going on but it will have help on the disaster relief that a team of because we've our producers whose homes were destroyed those kind of things we have to have access to that I know there will be additional supplementals and you know that's kind of the talk from the Texans another Floridians and those kind of things we're going to Egypt some additional relief there now disaster relief will be a very important part of discussions in developing that new farm bill one of the key points reading the Farm Bill is that we've been able to avoid ad hoc is after really famous stand so we can be very cautious about getting outside the bounds of the farm bill as we as we look at this response but just now getting to the the cumulative impact of what happened and what those losses are and once we see that I think we'll have a better sense of just you know what we need to do and how quickly we need to do it but you really talk about you know his age want for help now to be supplemental relief programs as well as for how do our community programs in crop insurance and others react to this disaster that will inform us has to be you know the really other holes initiative things we need to fix going forward now the devastation to the Texas cotton crop is a good example of the kinds of vents that the farm bill needs to anticipate and be able to effectively provide help for one of the issue. Looking at is destroyed and taxes it was at its final stages so many had already been harvested so all of the input costs were and that crowd the publisher had spent all the money spent and then they lost across they lost a record crop which you can't insure and so is no way to look at the risk across the spectrum. Season and waste looking to have a social kind of conversation be having with that face it would not take effect until 10 years from now House committee chair my Conaway joining us this morning well friends in 2016 a federal court ruled that the Internet is a utility as important as water and electricity yet a 2016 Pew Research study found rural Americans are less likely than urbanites to have home Internet smartphones and other devices and they go online less frequently Why does a digital divide exist and how is that bridge to Alex Miller of Via Sat says that while Internet is such an essential service rural America does have a harder time accessing the internet so you know with any utility there's always going to be a cost to build the infrastructure to provide that service in the case of internet traditional providers have to dig trenches and lay cable or fiber string on poles to serve those homes and businesses and you know that might work very well in urban areas where homes and stores are built close together but it becomes a lot more expensive for companies to do that in less populated areas though in those rural places traditional Internet just isn't available because the cost benefit for those cable or phone service providers we're going talk more about this in about a half hour some farm news this morning you're listening to ag life Jerry life is presented by Linda recruitment into Larry this is Terry am radio now a rundown of the latest very news across America with Bill Baker the grass isn't always greener dairy producers around the world are concerned about their bottom line that according to Jill stall time with mobile cow who for years has been hosting dairy farmers from or. Around the world yes we actually just finished a course international very short course 3 days worth of training with University Wisconsin professors and I think we had about 20 different countries in that great fun to see you know the funny thing though we ask them what is their biggest issue what are they facing and you know it's not too different there was one guy one guy who said he was happy with his milk price but other than that everyone around the world would like to receive a little more a little more margin fun discussions also immigration interestingly and labor big issues and of course your normal mastitis lameness making sure you're taking advantage of the genetics as well as you can and feeding getting that great quality for its issues that every looks at all around the world so you're talking about all around the world can you give us some countries who's visiting There's quite a delegation here from Pakistan that's an up and coming area very interesting last year had quite a few from Ethiopia as well apparently a really fast growing area around the world. Personally have of course got a bunch of Latino so there were people in our course from hundreds cell Salvadoran Nicaragua Colombia. She said all over and they're doing the same thing we're doing you saying they're milking cows and having to deal with their bottom line dealing with bottom line a lot of people are looking at exactly how they can control that bottom line there's a lot of folks looking at how they can change that and control it more. We actually have a course going on in May as well about adding value to your milk and making more from milk we call it and there's a lot of interest in that right now around the world where can they go to make more control over that how can they what should they process and actually some of the American farms we visited were doing some of their own processing in just starting in or they contracted to do some if they aren't doing it themselves directly so some fun ways of trying to figure out how to best be a businessman besides just a dairy man now bit now you take a lot of trips to with all of these world dairy produce. More than my husband wants me to take place so I was recently just out your way in Washington state we're looking at mobile slaughterhouses because some of these farms are looking at the whole circus you know what else can we do and and and recognizing too that controlling your own product being able to sell it directly to the consumer makes a lot of sense from a bottom line but also that I think there's a sense of pride behind that I think also some little driven by some just realities that we want to have a nutritious products that we can be proud of and our name is on it and we can be a part of that by maybe processing it ourselves building our own storefront like a lot of these diaries or start to do now our thing you know we were on some in May with that group that have done some really great things and it's just it's also it's a whole nother level you know you get to play if you're doing ice cream you get to start playing with your own flavors and figuring out but again it's another whole business I've always said the dairy farmers already have to deal with being agronomist and financial bankers and understanding all of the human resource sides and now even some of the immigration issues in the legal things and then you add on the whole marketing piece and the direct sales to the consumer but what's been fun is to watch them that are family farms and as they grow that they dedicate one brother to this or one sister into this area just fun to watch and watch how they get to develop those unique interests and still be in this great industry of the dairy industry absolutely just all tell are from global cow thanks for joining us you want to find out more information about them global cow dot com Thanks for visiting with us prescience Thank you you have come to your feet your cows and your bottom line come out the winners the high fan contents of cotton you see Provide your cows with extra energy that they could use to increase the fodder fat content of their milk cottonseed also helps maintain complement body condition and adds up to a better bottom line pleasing. To you. Your bottom line order online at whole cottonseed dot com agriculture secretary said he produces the u.s. Is going on the offensive when it comes to unjustified agricultural trade barriers by other nations all options are on the table produce spending a couple of days in Italy at the meeting of agriculture ministers of the g 7 nations where he'll have one on one talks with those nations we need to make other countries understand that we're not going to stand for any longer just trade barriers that cannot be supported by sound reasoning that's Secretary Sonny Perdue Stay with us for the latest news from the dairy industry I'm Bill Baker dairy radio now. Great life I'm Bill bigger with American cattle news we have now learned that bigger is not better that's Bill Bullard with our calf USA who says his group is joining 210 other organizations urging Congress to restore lost competition in livestock and other agricultural markets as letters very timely because it's targeted at the $2800.00 farm bill that Congress is just now beginning to work on for the letter very importantly points out that the recessionary periods that our nation has just gone through as a result of failures of some of these huge corporations indicates that it is inherently dangerous to allow the use of unlimited mergers to continue within our industry So we're urging Congress to put a halt to the ongoing mergers and acquisitions in the cattle industry and other agricultural industries and we're asking Congress to begin strong enforcement of our anti-trust laws to prevent number one the mergers but also to prevent the antitrust activities that really amount to market manipulation and that leads to the 3rd issue that we raised and that was that Congress has to take steps to prevent the multinational meatpackers from manipulating the cattle market we know. That they are using captive supply cattle in order to avoid having to go out in the competitive cash market and bid aggressively for cattle we also know that they are using formula contracts in order to remove large volumes of cattle out of the competitive market and having them committed to the Packer without ever negotiating a price these are anti-competitive Cool's that are harming the industry we're asking Congress and the Justice Department to take immediate steps to correct that that's Bill Bullard with our calf us seeing and now with more cattle news on egg life Here's Patrick Cavanagh Thanks Bill we also manage 3 big ranch salad. On the ranch that's Mark Lacey He's the president elect of the California Cattlemen's Association he ranch is in Monaco an annual counties on the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and he also manages the famous to hone ranch in that hatch of the mountain south of the San Joaquin Valley now that to hone ranch is 270000 acres and it's a largest contiguous piece of private property in the state capital leases cover about 250000 acres and depending on their season up to 12000 head of cattle can be found grazing on the ranch Lacey said that ranch in another ranch is getting pressure from developers all we also know it's real Santa medio ranch which is old and works for sure and so it's own they've been actually you know converting a lot of the land. To arch you know a large agency or something that we feel are they both are going to want to separate the mill and but they're both. Shareholder greasers their purposes and then the wonderful stores are interested in the company 1st bought it they really want the cattle off they want to turn it into a lot flatter. Right. Ali Like own does now. Start to go up into the national forest and again they wanted the cattle off the. That land they have on the wall and they did it they kicked off for several years lazy said finally someone told the wind wolves preserve that you really needed cattle on that land to spread the wild flowers sort of a paradox that we have an environmental youth that bought a ranch and life fuck off here it later put livestock back on and we actually have a good working relationship with. Again after the wind wolves preserve found out that cattle are important for a while flower spread and preservation they kept the cattle on more news warrants acre the president of the North Dakota Stockman's associations hoping for a longer grazing seizing for the cattle mainly the current stocks and corn fields before they have to start feeding him in the feed lot so hopefully you know the good Lord will bless us with a milder fall here and so we can get in you know mid to late December before you know we need to start hearing about more news at American Kennel News dot com For act like I'm Patrick Cavanaugh American cattle news with so much going on a lot of what I said crazy health care bill Russia how pray claim brings out the big guns Bill what do we gain Yeah what do we keep So where do you want to store Friday morning in the 7 am hour this is the difference between Bill O'Reilly and I Bill O'Reilly joins the Glenn Beck program Bill reports the actual news they get their straight story things together and I can listen here for the conspiracy theories on our Talk 967-1428 weeks for Egypt covered crop planting seeds coming up soon many Newman green and their dealers will again be offering this genetics on the market with genetics from u.c. Climatologist at Iowa State University weather patterns certainly are dictating. In the form. What do you see here is the driving force of this weather that is slowing down any progress there. A lot of land has been harvested mostly because it's too muddy at the moment and people say well that's nice to be building up water for next year but let's not build it up to crawl out of the ground there is the situation and will it improve the $6.00 to $10.00 day weather outlooks as well yes of course it will I don't know them or that's some Outlook or forecast meeting that forecast but tend to be more than 80 percent accurate outlooks more than 60 percent accurate our last bit better than a coin flip but 6 to 10 an 8 to 14 day out with a good performer than usual conditions and that will take us right into the 25th of the month and also unfortunately say their normal precipitation for the next week or so and then after that maybe back to above the usual chances so soon as the fields you can go all the way at the Right now tire country seems to be a little bit out of whack with some of the warm temperatures and how cornbelt turning cold but then maybe starting to see a few more extremes Bramsen around both ways and when I look at the picture of the planet on by satellite I am seeing that there are still some wards frontal systems in the fake like all the way from Hawaii to Alaska and they move toward us and a lot of people call that pineapple express that can bring their rain right to have near the whole why to our west coast especially the northern half of California that doesn't bring rain all the way across the Rockies but the disturbance comes across and as long as we have any southerly complement to the air to bring more extra from the Gulf of Mexico once that disturbance gets across the Rockies it will help or hinder defending in the size you want to take but it will in. Courage the precipitation to fall and so as long as these fronts keep crossing the country that's likely one of the strong reasons that the National Weather Service has in their $814.00 day outlook the dentist to pay We've got above normal chances of having precipitation Dianetics to 18 days we finished up this week that some of the places that are the for this behind on harvesting Well you'd think if that Pineapple Express was bringing rain to Northern California that would be a good thing but it's not raining there and there are wildfires are out of control now they have wildfires that kind of thing and when they have the dry period of course following a very wet period that they have that got them out of their growth and then as soon as they what we would call a Chinook wind gets into place they call it the devil and or something like that have out there depending on the part of California you're at and works the same way when that wind starts blowing down off of the high mountains it comes in often a high wind and often very dry warm wind that is coming him and if they are going to be fires are if those fires get started they will become big fires in a hurry under those conditions and I asked someone actually intercept and of course they're saying tragedy's out in that area and they've seen tragedies before but still a tragedy u.s.d.a. Released crop production numbers as part of its was day report yesterday l 1178 point one core number agreed yes I do and that's quite consistent with their previous outlooks they're holding pretty much on the same number this time they've actually got observations they take so there's a count at the colonel's and that sort of thing they tend to come out. By the time we get this one earlier accurate though it still be a bushel or 2 off but higher than a lot of people would like and it isn't helping the cost or the price that farmers get for the grain at all to have have a violent Unfortunately I guess for the farmers looking for a higher grain price it's likely a very good number I always State University Extension climatologist l one Taylor You're listening to Agra life I'm Doug Hoover frog life I'm Melissa mo with California today this report is sponsored by alley on herbicide from Bear Crop Science cleaner longer alley on the p.m.a. But fortunately we're going to get back to we're going to give you the way. To look at this morning. 67 and 800. This is Agwai on power Talk 967 and I am 1400 farm news here and I glad it's not being brought to you by Lawrence tractor company you're listening to power Talk 967 am 1400 and around the world on i Heart Radio or friends us talk about internet connectivity and availability in rural America 2016 a federal court ruled that the Internet is a utility as important as water and electricity. Yet in 2016 Pew Research studies found rural Americans are less likely than urbanites to have home Internet Michael Clements takes a look this morning why does this digital divide exist and how do we bridge it Alex Miller Via Sat says that while Internet is such an essential service rule Americans have a harder time accessing it so you know with any utility there's always going to be a cost to build the infrastructure to provide that service in the case of internet traditional providers have to dig trenches and lay cable or fiber string on poles to serve those homes and businesses and you know that might work very well in urban areas where homes and stores are built close together but it becomes a lot more expensive for companies to do that in less populated areas so in those rural places traditional Internet just isn't available because of cost benefit for those cable or phone service providers some people move to the country specifically to get away from city life Miller explains why having a quality Internet access is important for the rule areas those folks flock to good internet is a necessity for just about everybody those days you know studies have shown that rural counties that have good broadband attract more new business have faster household income growth and stronger employment than counties that don't beyond those economic factors you know there's online services like telehealth you know if you live far from a hospital or a clinic the ability to have an online consultation with a doctor can literally be a lifesaver and if you're far from a grocery store or other retail outlets you can shop online even have food to leverage your home and it saves time and for those who prefer to be in the country it also means avoiding the half of the crowd to drive into a store these are the types of online services that actually enhance the peaceful quality of life that a lot of people think when they move to the country when it comes to rule Internet needs Miller explains the options in rural areas for internet your best bet is likely going to be an Internet service that's not dependent on cable or fiber and that means often satellite service like seed by Via Sat or sometimes a wireless Internet service provider that sometimes called a whisper these are things where they put a little antenna on your house and they've got a transmitter up on a to. Or something like that and if you've got a line of sight to it it can have a pretty decent service but even if there's trees or hills or anything like that in the way it won't work very well and it typically peak at about 20 meg speed Now some people in rural areas will also try to get by with just their mobile phone carrier you know in a lot of those rural locations you too far away from the cell tower for the cell service to work well anyway so your Internets are going to work great at your house complex data over mobile phone can be pretty expensive gas lines in vantages to a satellite internet connection that line and it's really easy to get install this just a small dish that a technician and falls on your home or business and the service comes from our satellite in space not through a cable or a phone line or even a tower with those on your home has a clear view to our satellite in the southern sky you can probably get our service the satellite in it used to have a reputation for being slow and expensive but you know that's changed quite a bit the f.c.c. Defines broadband Internet as speeds of at least $25.00 megabits per 2nd and those speeds are already available with exceed by bias that many parts of the country when our new satellite starts service in early $28.00 scene they'll be standard almost everywhere and we'll even be offering speeds significantly faster than that as well as much more robust data plans so that means that you know folks living in rural areas you really can't get quality high speed Internet without having to wait for those traditional providers to find a way to bring the service and that means that the already high quality of life you enjoy living in the country will get even better learn more about Via Sat by exceed online at w.w.w. Done via sat dot com Michael Klim is reporting let's talk a little bit about pork this morning friends pork checkoff works closely with registered dietitians to discuss nutrition issues Adrian Hughes Yes he was a registered dietitian manages nutrition communications and research for the National port board African-American registered dietitians were the audience for a recent pork checkoff event and the reason for that and we need we want to understand the Read the world of the register registered dietitian a little better because there is this MERS misperception within their commune. These and their clientele that. Red meat is not healthy or they're not supposed to consume it so we wanted to combat those misperceptions and the best way to do that we thought is to bring them together for a deep dive in kind of a pork 101 hitting everything from the product to production on the farm so there's a lot of nutrition noise going around in our profession and so we needed to address some of those key issues and like I said that includes animal agriculture production and bought experiments I like to touch on meat quality So what they're looking for in the grocery stores and then of course nutrition research to wrap up and kind of bring it full full circle pork one o one will use it says this effort helps clear up misconceptions about meat consumption some of our can soon research shows that the perception of pork after Merican they're kind of skewed on cute of our products being the you know on the more unhealthy side but the reality is is that they're not they're not unhealthy there's you know 8 cuts that are under 10 grams of fat and deemed you know.
