And here talk. First. He said that 1st. Step. Toward. The basic nuclear issues through seeing the fear of. Another hump day another bear talk and the mood of this show is one of jubilance because we are celebrating the 1st of hopefully many California football wins this season this past week. Ken's season opening victory over the University of North Carolina Cal came out of that game on top 35 to 30 in spite of a 7 to 17 halftime don't have time deficit close to half time they were trailing $7.00 to $17.00 but that all changed when a $67.00 yard touchdown pass was complete to make Wharton The 3rd got the bears within or the range for a field goal at the half but will get into that later let me in let us 1st introduce ourselves here on this edition of bare talk I am joined by a loaded box of men here to dish about sports from left to right on microphone they're on even 6 microphones in here they're calling the microphone sex on microphone 6 we've got a tandem. Jesse. And Samuel Wiseman. You know bringing his wisdom bringing his spunk. Down the middle that Mike doesn't even have a number mikes over where we're being joined in the studio. At this moment but down the middle is Ryan Zimmerman going to be back and last but not least Leno in what I believe is his bare talk debut. No it was 1st time with me hosting the show that is Mario Valadez rounding up the lineup here tonight on bare talk a lot to get to you know since since this is one of the 1st few shows of the of the you know school year there's kind of some summer recap stuff that we still got to get in order a new slate of coaches the football basketball and baseball incumbents all either being removed or moving on their own accord there. And you know this weekend it was just in Wilcox his 1st head coaching game period in his 1st game as a coach of the Golden Bears and he came out with a win guys and. Started out you know with the positives what did you like from California in that 35 to 30 win against the Tarheels. Certainly like the off and that were showing Bo Baldwin the offensive coordinator. Showing some great plays to 4th down conversions in a row in the 3rd quarter setting Cal up for the go ahead touchdown it was done with something like a z. That and the voluntary downs on the defensive side of things certainly excelled in this game. And also with the absence of Chad Hansen no longer with the program Vic Wharton really stepped up and established himself as a really strong robber Seaver to option alongside highly recruit highly rated recruit Demetrius Robertson really coming to play in the 1st game of the season you know it's funny you mention Demetrius Roberson's because I didn't see much of him yeah he retired just to 12 yards however he did have 8 targets Yeah I was actually just about to get to that point the fact that other than Demetrius Roberts and all of the Bears receivers had an excellent job in terms of getting a hold of the ball when they were targeted everyone catching at least 50 percent of their targeted passes Vick wore in Jordan v.z. And Trey Watson leading the way they went a combined mental math mental math 13 for 17 on balls headed their way that's a pretty good percentage but yeah as you mentioned when when you're fullback Malique big Morris is getting more and more yards in and you know more everything than your highly touted holder of many freshman records you're wonder if Demetrius Robertson is maybe starting a software slump you hope not I definitely don't think so also you could be a little bit from. His involvement in it is a new track novice who also he might be really does he does he's more are you consensus of says yes. We're athlete and I haven't heard last hours name mentioned yet 363 yards 4 touchdowns I mean for a guy who hadn't really thrown a pass in a college game he really brought a presence actually played ecology Yeah he actually came in for under Jared Goff in the guard against Grambling State I believe he wrote he was 1st t.d. Pass there to Rivera he also did have one drive during the cow Senior Day last year against u.c.l.a. Taking over for Davis Webb in the last minute and half of the 4th quarter had one rush that was his entire involvement in that game didn't. Really good to see anything of. The wrong he was able to have an 11 Yari an 11 yard run in this game as well I was I was watching some some cow t.v. Footage cow t.v. The campus television station our you know the I guess the t.v. Killed the radio but they're digital it's fine. Any who you know they they had they were able to honor this high school clip of powers doing a a front flip over 2 defenders into the end zone and I think what was like a state championship game I've seen that clip at least 50 times it's so cool or a vibe in. The world of my and well he he was a little he was a little cautious in this game. The 1st true road game that Cal's actually won in a couple of years it's been since the game against the Huskies not last year's game where they got pummeled at home but the year before that in the in the freshman season of their current their current quarterback. Yeah I think one thing that. That surprising we haven't mentioned you have especially with a new head coach just and Wilcox that defense really really showed in this 1st game though u.n.c. Is coming off a season where they are losing their star quarterback me to try to ski to the draft it was the score at the end they did score 30 but that was because they kind of got a garbage t.v. At the end so really the defense gave up less than the average last year was about $43.00 points a game I think we're the bottom bottom 5 of the entire f.b.s. Something like $43.00 points a game to come out and to century about $24.00 points a game post that 6 points during garbage time it really shows out they really had a tough time with Sarratt the quarterback that was able to move around in the pocket able to get some explosive plays here and there but it's really really good to see a lot of explosive plays especially at the end of the half divine takedowns got that touchdown and really not an interception but he really showed out and I think that the defense has really definitely improved from last year even though we have about the same same same players coming back on the defensive end and it's good to see that just in Wilcox came in and has done exactly what we thought he would do and really has improved our defense and I think it was also going to see the defense almost got stronger towards the end of the game even high heat and humidity environment they were getting up to 9100 players on the day and you know just to be able to go that long is a good indication they were getting pounded as well as twice as many run plays as they had pass plays when you when you're going up against a school like Cal that had the worst rushing defense. I was going to say in history but no that was their passing defense and 24 to that was the worst passing defense in history good. Measure good for a while I think that's the assumption we need to make you know as morea mentioned that is why. What the newcomer Justin Wilcox the head coach has come in hopefully to change and you know he he did it this time at least the defense for so long has been something Cal's had to win spite of and now they have a defensive player of the week and Vontae downs the senior linebacker he forced to turnovers he led the team with 13 tackles were expecting this out of voluntary I think as the as his play developed as a senior Really it's his time to shine it's his time to show out especially if he does plan on going going into the draft and really becoming a target for a lot of n.f.l. Teams and just all Cox former linebackers coach during the Jeff Tedford era as really good to see that sort of center the field in our front 7 really you saw them attacking the quarterback a lot of different blitz packages and I think that the front 7 especially in the line back in defensive end position have a lot to gain. Absolutely and as Cal I believe Kallis transitioning into a $34.00 scheme with the Vontae downs and and Raymond Davis in the 3rd as the 2 middle linebacker so it will be interesting to see how they can anchor this defense because they bring a lot of leadership and if they put it to good use and they're able to get this defense going then it's going to be a real it's going to be real game breaker for games ahead. Absolutely and speaking of game breakers you know Cal did not we were using the phrase garbage time as if this was some sort of blowout I mean the game was a one score game almost basically till the end it was it was a touchdown scored within it was a minute 56 left in the 4th quarter when Vick unwary rushed in. Highlight of an otherwise unavenged full day for Vick and where he got tackled for a loss twice he dropped a ball the only ball dropped by any cow receiver which is good news as a whole. But the point I was getting to it was it was 17 to 7 and one point as I mentioned earlier and what did what was different in that 1st half compared to the 2nd half when cow just took control outscored u.n.c. I always set myself up for mental math and I'm not good at I don't see scored 16 points Cal scored 35 mm on a 728 so that's 2028 to 15 it's not that bad. Anyway it's less impressive and I talk it out and show your work. But know what it was based on what you saw in this game what did you think you know turned the momentum a cliche word. I like to use and in Cal's favor what it would be all think it was that apparently on. That for targeting the quarterback to result in Dalton being ejected from the game tackled Ross Bowers a late hit roughing the passer as a 15 yard penalty and set up. That touchdown pass to Vick warden of. 67 yard touchdown pass and that was really a highlight I think that change the momentum in favor of Cal and then. We also have before the half I mean at halftime it was 14 to 17 so 72721427 is really kind of that touchdown there also really shifted the game in Calif favor. Well 3530 the final score Cowles starts off its season with a win 5 more wins until possible Bowl eligibility. I just want to talk about the run like all of our running because you know you had 3 Watson he's in the fifty's yardage and I think it's 56 yards and he only had he had 11 carries yards 11 carries that's not very impressive and where and he's in the forty's a few less touches but I mean still the running has got to produce a little bit I mean we've got to be averaging at least I am hoping by the end season I'm hoping for point 8 yards per carry because that's where you can set yourself up to get those sort 1st down passes are ever just game it was only 3 yards per play Trey was 4.7 Victoria 2.4 so not really a lot of success against the North Carolina defense an asterisk there though for unwary he's often put in situations where he only needs 3 yards he was given the ball in a lot of 3rd down and one 3rd down in 2 conversions and more and more often than not in that game he was able to come up with them especially thinking of the the later point the game the final touchdown that that pretty much sealed the game for cow it was it was a 1st in goal with 3 yards between the Bears in the end zone and they just handed it to him where he 3 times and he got it down but you know what separates the like mediocre teams from the good teams is having the ability Ok I need to run the ball 2 yards but then i'm Ok I'm exploding through the pocket right here and now instead of a 2 or 3 yard play it was a 15 yard play I mean you see good teams in the n.f.l. They're running backs when the running backs are going in there are more explosive and they have more explosive yardage even when they're not really meaning to that's the thing that has definitely the momentum carrier and also I think it's definitely important to mention Vick and where he is coming off a season ending a.c.l. Injury from last year. So I think it might take a bit of time for him to get fully game ready he did have 17 carries so they He's definitely ready to be to be a contributor in this office and play the role of the bruiser back on 3rd down and goal to go situations so I think it's really good that he's starting to get his groove back and he did you did come through in a lot of really quite situations namely the 4th down at the beginning of the 4th quarter and game winning touchdown run well let's take a step back here and just look at the entire college football landscape momentarily we would watch the half hour show we have so much to cover for a Pac 12 teams in the top $25.00 in the voting 8 teams in the top $31.00 and $9.00 if you include Cal in the in the Top 40 that's us see 6 in the country the University of Washington at 7th in the country Stanford and 14th Washington State they they haven't they didn't make the same mistakes that they did the past 2 seasons where they lost their way they lost their f.c.s. Game remember last year they got a they got decked by Portland State I think and then they brung off like 89 wins straight and right underneath that right on the edge it's Tennessee's and 25th that's that's the cutoff for like official rankings Tennessee has 124 votes but number 26 you got Utah number 27 you got u.c.l.a. Who will talk about a little more in a moment they probably have you know the maybe the game of the year. Maybe not. It's all it's always hard to say that about u.c.l.a. Or state of any color or definitely exciting football once it once it got exciting wasn't exciting those was $4043.00 and probably lost some some advertising dollars there Colorado and 29th in the country Oregon 31st in the country and with with 2 votes in the a.p. Poll California we were in the preseason poll we came up on another thing that I actually are. Our correspondent. I think his name is Rodney Dangerfield he's speaking on behalf of the Clemson Tigers who in spite of being the reigning national champions no 1st place votes Ohio State got 1st place votes when you think that running the storm I was the worst for going to respect you when I was a kid no respect gotta get my mother drunk or breastfeed Colorado. That's that's a little too much you should say that for after hours there. Were no votes for Auburn where they got to do when by more than 55 to 7 and you know it was a scrub team but what's the deal with that Alabama. Alabama simple Alabama Alabama is going to take all of Bama I mean also Clemson lost the heart and soul of their team in the Sean Watson and they lost the anchor of their defense a member were also Mike Williams going in the top 10 so they lost a lot of talent I think that might cost them some votes just in the early stages of the season. Well I mean that is I don't know this would suddenly become a Clemson show I think I think they have I know they have a number 2 number 3 e.s.p.n. Top 300 class of 28000 recruits you know how many of those recruits Callahan as. 0 negative 3. Yeah because they we had it we had 2018 committed quarterback who then decided he was going to play for Alabama Oh yeah there we go. Our play got scared center on the topic of Alabama do you guys watch the Alabama game I was very surprised when both Scarboro did not perform to his potential I mean I'm going to be the 1st say I don't like both I don't see that . Alabama. Can be like. As Possible but if you're. Going to watch football. I've never been impressed with I mean what impressive backs come out of Alabama you look out. The same running back over and over every time and they never do anything any lazy. Shrimp. Is contracted so always to give that a public plan it is. Going to rain this is going to take some responsibility here another story that I wanted to get to before we. Also know that Jesse's and I want to come to us with some some some non football news so you can watch if you can you can play in your bathroom break for the. Change that oil every hour to keep our game you know I teased it. I just wanted to talk about. Sports we have Kalin a lot of times we only talk about baseball basketball football I was trying to bring in those other couple of sports that you know people should know I definitely think it was just because they were national championships Yeah I mean it's going to have to have you think they're all fresh Oh yeah having been bad the past few years like why don't let's bring in a few number one teams like our men's water polo team I mean yeah number one team in the country to just be a Davis. 10 They got another game against university Pacific who is the number 5 team in the country on Saturday but I mean they're 5 and on the season they have to . The top 5 players in the country I mean go Bears. Go water sports of your Bears fan also bears fan the woman soccer team took care of business against Long Beach they maybe don't want to 0 there now undefeated Edward stadium on the season and there they move to 4 and one. She is a junior I would definitely look for her to make Pac 12 honorable mention list this year she's back at it no I mean I'm serious she's scoring at least. She's averaging 1.3 goals a game and they're winning by a margin of one little game so I mean if that's any indication of how she's playing this season you know I take her for sure the next game is at Sacramento State on Friday so you know the other topic saying Go bears so much I was telling our boys Sam Wiseman that the Chicago Bears are trying to claim the go better slogan for those of you who are on social media Twitter started doing Twitter and Facebook . Where the team started doing slogans and then there emblems would come up next to it so I saw Chicago every time you put a hash tag Go bears their ugly red sea comes up right next to it so the cow football team Twitter page was just livid because now every Go bears on their page as a Chicago seat and I was just seeing that the other day and I was going to say that is wrong on so many levels of computer science students. Right this wrong so it is in the Bay Area to what do they think of the moment I just stand over there. So I can say and then help Chicago. Better let's. Do it we can. Who is going to be worse this year the Browns are the bare ground 0 I thought you were talking about like that the social economic condition of Chicago now we're starting to we're not going to get there we're not there not to talk yet but where we're still on the topic of football but bears or Jets Jets or you've got to be nice. Based soley on the faculty bears or jets can you even then I saw one guy who is he today he's pretty good yeah so I'm very surprised I can even name 2. Who's been called I thought it would count I know it just because the Jets I'm sorry all right who scored by Mike Glennon Oh right former a former Raider that's what I'm talking about some of the Goswell are going back to the How about Iraq. He'd be the water boy if they asked him to. Go abroad for $21.00 times less than he went to the Texans for hold the greatest. Texans that anyone ever had the proc market is what they're calling it the Brock market also you mentioned how the New York Jets opening Super Bowl odds based on the Westgate sports book in Vegas is 1000 to one that is a sin Oh I'm going to bet 100. The next day next I was rated a 101 there and that and that is just that just shows how much disparity there is between the New York Jets and literally the rest of the league they're setting a new standard for for for just terrible football I don't know man if you're talking about odds we have to go back to this weekend Howard Howard University not have the best odds at all but. It can. Order back yeah that's that's worth something that there was a sports book they said if you bet $10.00 on Howard winning you would come out with a $4100000.00 from those odds. Oh and I'm sure there's always Olympic Games letters while as. You l.v. The the rebels forced to Vegas team that. Blows it that they probably had you know you know all the conspiracies about oh yeah you know Vegas you know what happened thing they had a bunch of Vegas i.d.r. Bet on Howard and sort of own it up that's what it is going this gracious this valley the house doesn't always win the rebels lost to the bison in blowout fashion 2 it wasn't even close you'd think the spread would be the other way it was the the biggest spread that a team has ever lost they were favored win by 45 in the they lost by about that much wow. Wow another. You know this is disappointing I'm sorry oddsmakers that you guys Well looking ahead to Saturday September 9th let's do it the Weber State Wildcats the 1st of 2 Wildcat teams the Bears will play will host this season it's the 1st of 3 home games in a row so you know you've probably seen the billboards around town talk about the u.s.c. Game the Ole Miss game but oh my goodness not before the Weber State Wildcats have had their time with the Golden Bears will be the 1st time these teams ever meet and you know speaking of big margins the way the Wildcats was last week 76 to nothing against albeit Montana Western which is. Not a reasonable school in the country other than the I know me down I can read I can't I can't find on the downswing I can name you a single thing in western Montana so that is true Big Sky But you know whatever state you know that among among f.c.s. Schools with that you know said they're ranked in the f.c.s. They are coming off of a $26000.00 season where they made it to the f.c.s. Playoffs for the 1st time in over a decade and they have a preseason All-American at each position group special in their punter Jacob to my oh their quarterback to Tehran Johnson and Andrew volar they were all voted f.c.s. Preseason all Americans and you know what you need as a team that's you know trying to make an upset try to make some noise you need people to come up that weren't quite as expected to perform like Chad Hansen was for the Bears last year and they did have that in there is their free safety is last name is is just one letter off for being a predator it's appreciator Jordan appreciator 2 interceptions 2 of the 4 picks that the Weber State Wildcats had in that opener and we saw. Against the University of North Carolina there were a couple of forced balls some plays that may be barriers or just take in the sack but he chose to force it on on 2 very similar short in route passes about 5 or 8 yards up from scrimmage due to the Bears have something to worry about here with this with his hands he Weber State Defense Well we know there's been a lot of talk about Ross Bowers taking maybe too many risks and I know that you know I tried trying to be cautious last week it definitely paid off I read a quote from Justin Wilcox about just how much just how far they have to go with ours still regards to the risk taking and you know it takes experience quarterback to know when to throw it away and to know when to you know just to know when to roll out and all that roster is doesn't have that experience yet also on the other side of the ball and I'm very surprised this hasn't been mentioned in the broadcast yet Cal gave up 233 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns to the North Carolina rushing attack albeit they do have an electric set of freshman and sophomore running backs but $233.00 yards that's not something that can hold up when they're playing teams like us c. Or Washington or Oregon or any team that is ranked within the Pac 12 so this will be a good test to see albeit against f.c.s. Competition if their run defense can bounce back and the run defense will be tested about 70 plays against western Montana and they were in the bold upwards of 50 times to the tune of I think they they set a bunch of records including with how many points they scored but they gave the ball to 4 different backs and they they all crushed it so it looks like there's going to be a lot of fresh legs just pounding the wind this weekend hopefully the bears a hold up I think we're overplaying it we've got 94.7 percent chance of winning is an ugly game. And you know here we take care of business defenses not getting worse let's put it on the out there and even it's not getting worse well Cox's things he's going to work on with them throughout the week obviously is going to focus on the defense more than often and often will be there I definitely think it has been there and will continue to be there our defense is going to go up now 94.7 percent chance of winning I think that's accurate let's get out there let's take care of business it'll be easy all right well we're coming to a close of the show are we can go around with our list of honorable mentions for the week before we hand it off back to the music maestro disc jockey. Curt reply it's going to be coming in for a set here on your Calix right after this but just going around I'm I'm sorry I'm going to take really big Morris. Really big Morris for pies with more a surprise win and you can't have you can't have. It's fun to see $300.00 plus pounds to get it 1st downs and that's that's what he did 18 yard reception from the league Norris hopefully. The Playbook has some more opportunities for him to shine we know we were talking about Trey Watson not getting that much running game he's actually could be mounted to mention he had about 303637 yards actually in the passing game they had a lot of. Different. Yeah he had. You know he had total $84.00 yards that was both on the ground and from the air so they showed a lot of different packages having him come out of the backfield so it would be my own but mention for getting it done both on the ground and through the air. Yes in my book on a row bench and we go to Patrick layer and he had the big touchdown pass after the targeting penalty on. Or the hit that Ross Bowers took I'm sorry I'm blanking on the name of the guy that that got ejected but that was the momentum shifter right there if we don't get that penalty and we don't have that big play then who knows what happened so Patrick Laird is my honorable mention. Morrow is going to be John Dalton of the Tarheels for forgetting Ross Bowers and sure of that game. I don't have an honorable mention but I have forecasted honorable mention for next week and that's going to be I mean 3 is Robert he's going to get a bounce I've seen him I've seen videos of him where he in practice I think he's fine it was just I think it was more of a manner of his the way ham and Bowers are going to move with each other throughout the season and I think this is a small price to pay last week but next week I think member states he's going to bring it well for all of us here in the Kalak sports department we really thank you for tuning in September 9th 2 30 pm kickoff is your next chance to catch some live Golden Bears football but until then you know better talks going to sign off you can catch us again next week every week at 9 pm on your Calyx and until then go go there is there it is there it is up next. Thanks fellas thanks Bill as let's hope that the Cal Bears are not a runner up. But make it 2 in a row.
