All of a meaningless bowl games and that's the way you fans seem to feel about it 71 percent of you are voting a 16 team college football playoff and 29 percent of you a bunch of meaningless bowl games well if you haven't heard big deal made in baseball the cardinals completed a major trade that landed them 1st baseman Paul Goldschmidt from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for catcher Carson Kelly pitcher Luke Weaver infielder Andy Young and also a draft pick and Goldsmith who is 31 years old is entering the final year of his team control and he is without a doubt one of the best 1st baseman in baseball and really if you take a look at his numbers he has been throughout his career he recovered from a slow start last season to hit 290 he had 33 home runs and for his career he's hit to 97 with 209 home runs that's pretty consistent and that's the obvious benefit for slotting Goldschmidt in the middle of the order but there are other affects at play too by adding Goldschmidt to the roster the cardinals now can shift Matt Carpenter back across the diamond to 3rd base so I'm sure everybody's happy with this deal Art Monk standing by to join us Hall of Fame wide receiver played 14 of his 16 seasons with the Redskins he won a couple of Super Bowl championships will talk to him about that and he was the 1st player in n.f.l. Over the years that I've been watching football I was always a pleasure to watch perform a retired after 16 years officially retiring after 16 years and he said I consider myself more fortunate than most to a played this game by God's grace I have achieved far more than I could ever imagine I had a wonderful career and I will miss the game when you look back on your career is there a single moment that's crystallized in your mind or I think of. My career with the Reds and probably. Every time I think about one name it's. Very clear that championship game. Here and watching the game that. We didn't have a No one really expected us to win and that Dallas Cowboys roadie packed for Pasadena they had their everything packed ready to go for the Super Bowl. It was a very intense game very expect a very exciting game and one that was full of energy as far as the fans were concerned they were very excited very into the game and. This is just one game in fact I did even play in that game I was injured so I was on the sidelines so I really had a chance to really kind of take everything in and at that game is one game that really stands out in my mind more than anything else I'm always fascinated by professional athletes because the moments are fleeting I'm talking about the good moments in the bad ones are probably more lingering than they should how does one maintain an even keel knowing that the ups are going to be there on the downs are going to follow deceptive realize assist the system nature of the beast the game me and actually no matter what you do there's always going to be some some some bad times that go along with the good times so you just have to when the good times are rolling when we've had you know early in my career with the Redskins we've had some great success and when those times of a deceptive appreciate that and know that this not gonna last forever and you know when a bad time to come it really tests you know what kind of character that you have as a team and as a person. And I think a good team with good character is going to stay together they're not going to point fingers we're going to continue to work hard and do the things this story to to be a champion and. What a team does that you know that the bad times don't last for long are one of the things that I find most fascinating about you is what you touched on a little bit earlier about having played this game since you were 9 or 10 years old and over that long period of time that you played football you were always able to maintain an enthusiasm for you didn't get burned out on it you always had the love you always look forward to that game on Sunday or on Monday night that is a difficult thing to do want to becomes a job when it is been a part of your body and your soul for such a long time how does one maintain the enthusiasm aspect well. Not to get caught up in the game as being a business I think if you can approach to game in the sense that it is a game of course you have to make a living at it but this approach it as if it's a game you're out there to have fun. And you know this have that attitude that it's something that's you know we've all been ingrained into since we were born you know we all grew up playing football out in the street playing tackle in the streets and it's something we've always had a love for of least that I've always had a love for I just love the game and of course I went to college and got trapped to the proles I never changed that attitude of course being on the pro level had to make a living at it and I had to take it more seriously as far as my training during the off season stuff but it because it was a game that I love and enjoyed. I just never got tired of it did you also are to have the I guess the advantage of coming into football when I was still pretty much a game and there was no salary cap there wasn't the big money that's being paid today so therefore that wasn't as much of an influence so you could relate back to your roots in your real lob for the game that was an advantage where you think I think that has a lot to do with. You know Fortune I think a lot of the young players coming in now it's so much money is on their mind more so than the never before and because of that and because of their being paid high salaries they don't I don't think they take the game as seriously they may have a love for the game but they take a lot of the natural skills and everything for granted so you know they don't work as hard as the attitude problems of their Of course I'm not speaking for everyone but I think in general it's that way but you know whereas before money was an issue but it wasn't an issue like it is now and people played it because they just love it and that's what they really wanted to do very very interesting you should bring that up because in talking to Joe Morgan and talking to other established stars of the played their games for a long period of time they always talk about the fact that the young athlete sometimes does not check their ego at the door when they go to the next level of competition do you sense that as well yes I do. You know when I came in there was. There was a general respect for not all of the the coaching staff what your organization but also what he told the veterans and you know we we came in you know it didn't matter how good you were you were homebuilt real quick and you went about you know you had respect for the veteran players and for the coaches. And I think nowadays you know because. Of the money issue and guys coming out there are so cocky and so stuck in their own ego they come in they don't care who you are you can be you know better and that played for 20 years you can be a coach you know they figure they're coming in they were hired fat picks and whatever they've got paid lots of money and they're just going to come in and do you know what they think is best for them did you lament one trash talking came in the professional football season did you lament did you not be happy when you saw trash talking come into professional football Well I think trash talking was always was always there it's probably a little more noticeable now guys are more a little more vocal a little more. Sick about what they do and what they see now than before but it was done in a more respectful way the was an art. Yeah I guess you could say so. But a little more respect for it wasn't because of that it wasn't as noticeable as it is yeah I mean what I find when I see athletes trash talking it's more demeaning it's in your face it's more embarrassing whereas I think that if you want to bare somebody it was fairly evident you didn't have to say it was by your performance over the person that you were playing and if something was said it was a little more private It wasn't something to the whole world if you know what I mean it was more private and it was done more so just to in. Committee in to try to get you to think to get your mind off of what you're supposed to do and I think Lester Hayes. Listen he was good at doing that he respected you he appreciated you for what you did as an athlete but he trash talk and the things you want to quiet way but more so this to try to get you out of your game now so it's just more so just out of respect and disregard for who you are as a player what did John Riggins mean to the team in the eighty's John was it was a real character. To say the least. He always kept things going he always broke you know the monopoly you know when the whenever things got too serious he would do something to break the tension. But the side that John was John was a was was a real leader and even though he had his problems off the field you know it came time to play John was ready to play and he made sure everybody else was ready to play too so it was good having someone like him with the team always sense that he should have probably been a Raiders uniform sometimes. He had to kind of meant that what about Jack and Jack Kent Cooke because as I said hands on type of honor man that blob his team and I think it was a 2 way street Yeah Jack and Coke was the type of all of us spoke about with earlier he was committed to this team he was committed to his players he was committed to this community and he did everything that he knew how. To try to help this team win it and to have success whether it was buying. You know he. Gets free reign whatever. Sure that. Whatever coach. And whatever type of equipment or service that the players need it made sure we got it you know it was very very active with. All that and I think you know the result. Yeah I guess I would say out of the but my so one thing that Joe Gibbs allowed me to do is be a little creative as far as kind of doing my own thing as long as I stayed in the parameters of what I was supposed to do end up where I'm supposed to be when I was supposed to be there and you know wasn't just writing a straight route it was you know this kind of playing with the defensive back a little bit and then whatever I can just just to be different not so with God Same thing on every play how is the relationship between quarterback and wide receiver the chemistry the just I know where he's going to be relationship how is that develop most developed over a period of time and a lot of work with one another probably personally I probably had the best relationship with Joe Theismann in the fact that he knew where I was going to be and I knew what he knew where he expected me to be and we saw a lot of time and practice working on that not only during practice but after practice and that this on the field but off the field just talking to each other talking through each route in each play and each pattern so when when game time came yet and standing over what I was thinking about and how it was going to get to where I was going to be and I had understanding of what he was thinking you know spars you know me running downfield and getting open so that's something that's very important and it takes all the time between receiver and quarterback to to get that one of the other things that I enjoy watching is relationship between wide receiver and defensive back because that's both psychological and also physical the battle that goes on is there a feeling out period that goes on early in the game where the defensive back tries to figure out what type of day he's going to have with a particular receiver and vice versa I think a good defensive backs a good defensive back will always test you. He always always test you to see how you'll react to certain things in the trash talk you for while he may bump you and try to give you a cheap shot here and there to kind of see how you react and if you react in a way that he feels like he can exploit to really get you out of your game what it really give you are hard times and obviously he's going to whatever he's done to you he's going to keep on doing it so one thing that I've always tried to do over the years is never give a reaction. No matter what he said and ever said anything back about what he did to me I didn't do anything back to him so I just never gave him a reaction to give him a feeling of what he should try to do to me to get me out again r r this is just an observation on my part and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about this but I think one of the things that may have helped you in any wide receiver receiver with the Washington Redskins is that you had to practice against green. When you play against the best and obviously it does nothing but help you the green is a great defensive back is great speed has great coverage ability and we practice against that I think Gary Clark and the other receivers that been a part of this team can tell you the same thing when we have a period during practices called One on One and whenever we got up. What it whenever it was our turn to go up we would always call on you know call him down because he felt like he was going to give us the best pitcher in the best realistic situation you know for us to go against what made him so good well I think that his best attribute is the speed and because of that he can gamble a little bit he can afford to kind of let you get in front of him because you know he can make up the distance make up the cushion real quick and he can afford to gamble be it because if he makes a mistake he can recover and he can recover and make up make up whatever Granted she made up on the size that he's real smart he just knows the game. You know real knack for for the ball and you know he's a he studies he studies opponents so he's. That really helps you playing in 3 Super Bowls when you look back at him can you talk about each of those teams what made him so special I think the 1st 2 Super Bowls 82 and 83. Well the thing is also one thing about those early years with the Redskins we had a team that was. Very very close and when I see close we're like family that's probably the one thing I remember about those 2 Super Bowl teams in 87 was a little bit different. This equates some some people. The way I'm surprised he Sanders and few other guys killed him Bryant and we struggled a little bit of a little bit that year but came on strong or near the end of the year we had some quarterback controversies between injury Schrader. And of course Doug had the great Super Bowl in 1970 and of course 91 I don't remember a whole lot about the 91 Super Bowl other than you know play the Buffalo Bills It was an indoor game. Of Minnesota in the cold. And of course I had a touchdown taken away from me so that's probably the most one thing I remember about that's kind of interesting you bring up about the family atmosphere if that is part of the catalyst for teams having success why don't more teams do it or do they try to do it but just aren't able to accomplish it all the running with a compass and I think. I think another reason why we're so close back then because everybody always say 99 percent about team lived lived here in Washington so he did a real good job and really keeping us together and I remember even during the 2 strikes that we had. He really into some during the strike to stay together to practice every day together to meet together and talk and still continue to train and work as if we were in practice over at over at the facility and so I give a lot of credit to the joke is it because he really made an effort to keep us together and keep that closeness together that we have got to be interesting if you take a look at the successful franchises in the seventy's it was the Pittsburgh Steelers if you look into the eighty's it was a San Francisco 49 ers you look also at the Washington Redskins in the Dallas Cowboys I don't think it's any accident that in each of those cases what you had was dominant ownership hands on type of ownership involved owners and also dominant personalities as far as far as coaches is there a comparison is there a similarity in all those situations in your mind I think so I think when you think when I think of a winning team. There are 3 characteristics that I think. Are very important. Number one is ownership obviously is an owner that is is that is committed to winning he doesn't own a team just for a status symbol or just because it's something else for him to to invest as dollars and what he really gets involved in takes an interest in the team and is willing to spend the money and to provide the type of facility for the guys whether there's to train or whether it's. Chiropractors or physical therapists or whatever the players need he is committed. To winning and really spending the money making sure the guys . Have everything they need. To win and to keep them happy 2nd thing as a coaching staff as was also committed to winning and to spending the hours you know with Coach Gibbs and the coaching staff that we had they would you know would stay the 23 or 4 o'clock in the morning they would they would they live there just about it barely so otherwise they really went home and it's not just not good for their family environment but it was great for the team they studied they watched boom they did everything that they could possibly could to prepare us make sure we had all of the information that we needed to prepare for a game but a thing obviously is drafting and having the right kind of players on your team that always have to be. The best the best at the league and I think Coach Landry made a comment about us this is during the eighty's again he said the Redskins are not a very talented team they display well together. We have a great complement because we didn't have a lot of power but we were committed to each other and we played well together and I think when you have all that wind you're going to have not just one of 2 good winning but you're going to have this years where you. Are not going to miss senior in the n.f.l. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your for so many years and as you said you did it with such players such creativity and such class as well not only as the football player but I think as a lot of people around the country has heard tonight also Art Monk the person that's why I wanted to have you on as long as I could to talk about not only your insights but also the things that you do that you give back to the community thank you very much for your time to. This is America's sports talk show Sports USA Here's Randa. Said he Moncrief 11 seasons in the n.b.a. 10 seasons with the box and one I think one of the fine players ever to put on an n.b.a. Uniform one of the things I like about Sidney is that what he did out there on the basketball floor was not only often so but it was defensive because if there was anybody that could get inside your jersey and shut you down I was sitting Moncrief Sending Good evening how are you tonight are you doing good what is it about defense that really caught your attention why is it that you wanted to be a defensive type a player known for that capability right always want to be one of low paid players . To quit way to get players. Seriously I've had a lot of good coaches. From my high school coach and then in college university mark and we spent 3 and a half hours practice. 3 hours would be on the fence and fundamentally the correct way to play defense when I got to the Milwaukee Bucks done we drilled probably half our practice on the fence I think it was more coaching and just developing a good habit of becoming a good defensive player through good coaching and it was not exactly a good good defense is there a particular attitude that it takes to be a good defensive player I mean do you have to disdain wanting to be off pensive do you have to say look these are what my limitations are what is the attitude you have to take about that no I think that you can be a great defensive player and phenomena officer player also there are very few cases that happens Michael Jordan is a good example of someone that's a good defender and a great offensive player but you have to just make up your mind that from a technique standpoint you're going to work you're going to make sure that your opponent has to expend energy for every point he or she guess and that's attitude I have I just don't want to get up give up anything easy on the fence not also that you can still have some room to be a decent office player city I've always had the belief that all things being equal in the n.b.a. If you're a player with. Average skills maybe above average because obviously the players at that level are outstanding athletes in their own right but if you can develop that skill the defense of the players skill but you can always find a job somewhere in the n.b.a. Am I correct in that thinking yes you won't get paid. You will always find a job I think you can just point throughout history of players that have played 101112 years just being great defensive players because there are so very few people are willing to sacrifice their office again because of the glory in the pay those involved in office a player. Sacrifies that to be a good player and my philosophy has always been make sure that you can play because . There will always be people that can score the basketball I don't know what go ahead very few people are going to be willing to night in that place. I don't know whether you were in Arkansas when I believe it was Nike came out with the kind of a documentary on any sudden a blemish who was down in Texas that that time in the rivalry between Texas and and Arkansas and it was the 1st real look see that I got into a both those coaches and I remember the kind of talks that Eddie Sutton would give his players and how he would really run him up and down the court and working hard and then a blemish just on the other side had a kind of a hang loose attitude and when those 2 teams got together particularly in Fayetteville it was one of the great basketball rivalries in the country. There's no one coaching technique that's going to work for everybody. Extremely intense he drills those very hard on unknowns where as a plan and he was a good coach but once we start playing you couldn't tell who was coaching who because fundamentally they were just out as we were and they played. Just 2 completely different styles of coaching What does it take to make that step I've had a lot of people say that going from high school to college is one thing but really the big step is going from college to the pros that you may be a star in college but I'll tell you what you really don't know what it takes what does it take to be a player in the n.b.a. Not necessarily a star but a player I think it takes a college coach. That. Come into me and be a fundamentally sound prepared from a strong college program not only on the basketball court but off the court be it through your academics or through your teamwork that if you have all those things going for you for 4 years in college then you're going to go into the n.b.a. Better adjusted and it is not a big secret why the most successful. Pro players were also from the successful college program it's interesting when you take a look around the country of course in the major cities Chicago New York Los Angeles they have many sports teams so there's many identities there but when you take a look at Little Rock Arkansas in Arkansas the college basketball team the winning team really becomes the personality of that state how is that different than what you might find say in a big city I think in a smaller state what you find is the entire focus and support is very concentrated and because of that I think we as players we have a lot of confidence and we feel that we can compete whereas in a bigger market course they have the media attention but you have so many good players have so many great high school and no one actually gets all the attention whereas in Arkansas. That Arkansas Razorbacks basketball team or that high school team focus point the concentration and effort. To the players we had Tony Rice on with us the former quarterback of Notre Dame and he had come from a small city small little town actually in North Carolina and I went to Notre Dame and I was talking to him and I was asking about the coming to a school where football was so important and being from a small town on the pressures of that you went to Arkansas the expectations the success that they had in Arkansas and he talked about how it really broke a lot of young kids freshman and sophomore years but yet you know as people listen to you tonight they hear a guy that's together that has always been together but can that type of pressure going to a big time a successful program be too much for a young high school star that's not prepared for that step Oh yes and that's one reason why I'm not an advocate of freshmen that plan because I want to play when I was a freshman but I do think that. The adjustment just from a academic standpoint from high school to college is so dramatic and then you throw in all the additional study time in the additional practice on the basketball court football field whatever it can be overwhelming to to a youngster I think at Arkansas we had a lot of support from the coaching staff and they made sure that your studies were taken care of in addition to the reverse sensitive to not letting the freshman get too much attention too early they working in slowly and that way you didn't get the huge drop off that you get from high school athletes now that are going to the majors because going at Wesley in Oklahoma City hello to me I love West I'm by grew up in Arkansas going to AAA And I'm a great a fan of yours I would like to question about. Things like a player like. Robertson and Tony Brown with broad to say they made it I think you have really come in the n.b.a. What is it about the good that has caused. I mean when you went and said you couldn't get a job when you went to the n.b.a. What is about to make you go last thing. You know I think. We need we work so much on defense any time you take a player and you spin and I'm not saying this in a negative way you spend 2 thirds of your practice session on defense because you want with defense then your officer skills are going to be limited they're going to take a backseat in the process well he's in still obsessively some fundamentals that once we got to maybe a were able to work our way out fast lane become. Sure and that officer players the other thing that I think that make you know just to follow up on Wesley's comment and it's an observation on my part to having watch sports and I have known a lot of great players who had great individual skills but they have not made it into the n.b.a. Because they could not blend into a system and I think that any sudden and being a strong emphasize or of system basketball prepared you guys better to make that jump Oh you did and he he was big on roles and on your role on the team except in that whatever you could. To enable your ballclub when I never get I want to win as a rookie and been a quote college superstar I never forget the 1st time I had to sit on the bench and . I remember close. Conversations from want to have the start I want to film the bench and it made sitting on the bench a little bit more user is there an off actor involved with the great players that everybody around them will tend to look form and say hey we can challenge so and so pulling us out yes and I think their teammates also feel that all a player wants to do is when and if they feel that their superstar have that attitude they're going to rally around a player they're gonna listen to their players and they're going to perform better on the basketball court because they feel that athlete is totally out and all they care about 20 Ok let's get back to the phones Minneapolis and wall that's you go ahead. Yes. Philadelphia fan although I live in the Twin Cities now and for many years I had to watch the match up you know with you again pictures and of course every year it seems like they always played down to the wire between pictures. And walkie and I just wondered if you could comment on any of the great games you had with Dr j. All the guys from Philadelphia they were thought of so dramatic at the right saw both. Because we always came out on the short hand the most memorable game was Doc's laugh game walk and it was game 7. And we ended up winning the game I want point he missed the last 2nd shot that could've won the game the ball bounce in the room and out and that meant that meant so much for us while beating Philadelphia 2nd of all I have an opportunity to play with one of the greatest players in the n.b.a. To have the opportunity to play the last ball game with him was probably my biggest and fondest memory but Mike Yes And they yes Mike I've always been a loyal fan of yours of water to how you cope with getting into the n.b.a. I didn't hear the question how you got into the n.b.a. How did you accomplish it. Good coaching. A lot of hard work into a group of high school junior high school players that day and I was telling them that I was I'm a very average player talent wise used to be in high school and that had I not put in the hours working and also been disciplined and I would not have become a player coach and just play a lot of hard work were you always an overachiever because I had always said I was over to I hated him when he said. Words he reflects Thank God I have no doubt under talented but I would see. I've always wanted work Yes Ok let's go to Stone Mountain Georgia Gregg go ahead to me when you approach the pros.
