Placed in accordance with your god. This is America's sports talk show Sports Byline USA Here's Rhonda. N.f.l. Football season is right around the corner and we check in with Kevin Payne and Kevin has worked for Roto wire just under a decade and he has covered basketball baseball and football and he seems to be a glutton for punishment because he roots for his hometown bills they were the New York Yankees and he hosts the road or wire Sirius x.m. Show every Wednesday and Friday as well and maybe you fans out there have already drafted your fantasy teams but all fantasy players are certainly looking for sleeper picks in case any of their starters go down or for waiver players 1st of all Kevin let me ask you how big is fantasy football today and what is affected that growth the most. Well it's really grown exponentially I mean at 1st I don't know if you're not too keen. And then they'd seen how many new fans but the fact they brought into the game is all of these demographics I mean people are starting fantasy football leagues with their old college friends their old high school friends there's husband unwisely I don't know that I want to take that leap quite yet and then you know there's other leagues still that people have around the office just for bragging rights and whatnot so it's really just thrown in that lot of that is that we have these games on Sunday night Thursday night now we've always had the Monday night games and teams are out the Sunday and it just gives people a reason to root for those teams in those games because a lot of times you they have players on their fantasy teams plan or they're going up against players. With their head to head match up who are playing so I think that's really the reason why it's grown and just scheme continues to seem to get bigger each and every year you know one of the things in correct me if you think I'm wrong about this Kevin but I think just the availability of information and especially the internet probably is affected at the most in the groet. Yeah so out there I mean you've got all the writers from different teams that you can keep track of obviously a guy like Adam Schefter gives you the breaking news he has a lot of connections throughout the week so you know or even goes in strolls around on you know your local news program sports program what's already happened who signed out there who's gotten hurt and whatnot and you know got a great site that you know there's a lot of sites out there you could pay for by you know proffering free trial right now to Wired dot com backslash free that you can sign up or pretend a trial and see all the content that we have and kind of the analysis but it's a lot of good stuff out there of your appearance Boller you've got to take the time go out there and research you know one of the things I've always wondered about is developing a fantasy football philosophy and I suppose it has to do to some degree with the league that you're playing in but how does one go about developing such a philosophy. You know. There's a few different pieces of advice I give people my philosophy is number one make sure you know your leagues parameters to different specs how to scoring a great warded how many players you need for your starting lineup we're starting to see more please have a super Flex which is not a 2nd quarterback that you can start each and every week the other kind of advice I give to have been at the owners and then the philosophy it's ready for the unexpected be ready to adaptors press strategy ready to do different things and try different things with the waiver wire. No traffic going to go exactly the way you want it to and it's very difficult to predict so you always have to kind of be able to adapt and try to go ahead and take the best player who's available out there was constructing a roster without going too crazy and drafting too many running backs or $200.00 wide receivers or no one position so I just tried to adapt throughout the draft and you should be Ok is the biggest mistake a fantasy player will make is that they lead with their heart rather than their head absolutely that's another piece of advice that I give every. And it makes it a little bit more fun if you have players from the team you're rooting for you don't really have to put those biases aside and use your hide and take the guy who makes the most sense you need said me and for all of the Buffalo Bills fan but you know what if Rob Gronkowski sitting on a round of dress that year I'm going to have grab them and I root for em as long as he's cleaning my belt just because of that I think that that's a smart way to go so that is one of the mistakes people made they get attached to either the team they like or players they've had in the past who have done well for them they feel some sort of loyalty even a player gets over their health good example this year might be a dream Peterson he's not the same player he was 5 years ago and you gotta let go of that and sometimes it can be hard for owners to do that and also I would think the challenge would be for fantasy players how good is this rookie going to be this year and then we also have to talk about the rookie who had a great year but morally have a slump in his 2nd year yeah we always like to shag new objects talking about rookies and really going into this trap and real football I think the big story was all these quarterbacks who may end up being franchise quarterbacks but in far as the running backs go I think in basketball we were even more excited because they Michael had to make an immediate impact but then we saw our side pony get hurt we saw various guys get hurt so then you have to kind of go back and re-evaluate things even a guy like Ronald Jones out of u.s.c. Was playing for Tampa Bay we can nothing but really negative reports coming out of their camp saying that he's not picking up the playbook he's not a great test cuts or on 3rd down he doesn't know the blocking assignments so you kind of have to be careful with those guys to hear 2 guys though at least we've seen it with them we know they've already done it so obviously you can feel great about drafting a guy like Alvin Kamar and bunch of these other 2nd player guys because we know that they can do it and they've already had a year of working in the off and for their belts and they already know what they need to do in cases like pass protection to make sure their quarterback stays upright so that's something that can. When you're looking at both work and 2nd year players How should a player approach injuries either at the beginning just before the start of the season or even during the course of the season Kevin. Yeah it's a case by case basis and I'm telling you my philosophy heading into these is I try to be risk adverse when it comes to and Jerry's you're never going to be traffic guy like Jordan Reid from the Washington Redskins has got a concussion history he's had problems with the needs of blacks I'm not going to go ahead and take that guy because I'm too afraid that at some point I'm going to have to at the waiver wire find a replacement for him and it could be that way for injuries and suspensions Well I've seen too many and I don't go way too high Mark Ingram go way too high both of those guys are missing 4 teams of the season so they're going to have to come to the steeply discounted price if I'm going to go out and draft them so my advice would be to be risk averse and if you've got a guy that during the season is going to be out for multiple weeks sometimes it's best to just cut bait with them because they're never going to come back a good example last year was everybody kept waiting for and you walk well when then you look down field one vendor looking to come back and he never made it out on the field and we've heard roster spot on a lot of teams so you need to be very careful and kind of go by case by case basis when it comes to injuries Kevin I've been wondering about this because I remember when it was just as you pointed out a little bit earlier something you did in the office it was something you did in the neighborhood it was a fun thing to be involved with fantasy football but as you know they've legalized gambling in this country and I think it's going to have a major impact it already probably has done with draft kings and others like that are you fearful in any way that this will lose some of the fun aspect of it. I don't think so I think that people who may play fantasy may you know dabble in the gambling at as well but not everybody who plays fantasy I think is going to go there I think some people just don't like the gambling part of it and they know that you know Candy it can become a problem but I think that you know just it's gotten such a good force behind it as far as fantasy goes that it'll just keep growing and I think that people will kind of keep it separate and if anything they'll just added on to the workload or whatever they're doing already for fancy if they decide to go that route what type of rule of thumb Do you have for those to keep it fun. It's like what I say to people 'd when you walk into a casino you walk in with this much money and you're prepared to lose and that you don't go to the g.m. You don't do anything else I think those are great words to live by what are you implying whether it's doing fantasy to not get in over your head and I write this many times on the left side or dot com I will write you know do this for fun do not make this try to become a professional or make that the your method of income and with the mortgage on it or anything silly like that it's out there to be fun for you to participate in an update that basically go out and make these so-called games that otherwise you might not have an interest and be a little bit more interesting and get those bragging rights for winning nearly and just make sure you keep it. All in one way only a minute left but who are some of the players you'd like to see happen are people should take keep an eye on at least. Yeah some guy from we started out early I think the van de Adams with a healthy air is just going to go absolutely bonkers this year he's in a really 2nd round pick I think next year we're going to be talking about him in the top overall even one of the top to sign right there we talked only about 2nd there players I love Kenny caliphates with Charlie Lyons it would not surprise me at all if he's better than Marvin Jones or even Golden Tate this year and your number 2 here guy has a great comparison the Calvin Johnson he's got the size he's got the speed I think big things are in store for him. Or even the guy that's been shooting up draft charts everywhere he has not been named the starter quite yet but I think that it's a matter of time before he takes over and if you don't wait a little bit longer there's a rookie Jordan inside of Ole Miss who looks like he might be the starter for the Napoles Colts come week one with Marlon Mack banged up I think that this guy has the size that 19 another one he doesn't have to run between the tackles and get a lot of the work on 1st and 2nd thout And lastly Patrick Mahoney the big guys that I've been telling everybody wait on quarterback it's very deep this year he's in a great audience with Andy Reid they have a terrible defense which means I think you're going to have to throw the ball a lot Kevin thanks a lot have a good season and I appreciate the work that you and wrote a wire do take care my friend thanks a lot for having me on again Kevin Payne with roto wire with us and you and I hope this was all helpful to you we continue with more of you in sports pilot. Sports USA. Another college football season is upon us and of course it would not be complete on Sports Byline without our friend Bruce Marshall senior writer for the gold sheet this is his 27th year with me on Sports Byline And so each week he is going to break down on Thursday the key college football games and analyze the match ups between the teams and give you a prediction on the outcome of them and then on Friday he comes back by and does the same thing with the key games in the National Football League but let's start off with the Florida and Lanny against number 7 Oklahoma this will be played at Oklahoma where a little more interesting here because Florida Atlantic survivor and by the way great to do another year with you here 27 of them it's been great and this should be a fun one for our army because it seems like Ford Atlantic that last year kind of came out of nowhere for Lane Kiffin of course that. Generated some extra headlines but they put a big off and so last year his running back Devin Singletary gained almost 2000 yards they ran away with Conference USA However their quarterback Driscoll retired in the offseason due to a neck condition and most of their wins last year were not against teams like Oklahoma they face this week in Norman post Baker Mayfield but Lincoln Riley has coordinated officers that have moved wherever he's been and they like a new quarterback Tyler Murray a and m. Transfer a little bit different and Mayfield little bit more read option better runner than Mayfield Oklahoma still pretty low today and we think that went 4823 suitors at Norman on Saturday and then number 23 taxes all their season on the road against Maryland at Bendix Beale and man of this one lots lots of moving parts here Maryland of course head coach a d.j. Dirk and suspended fade still to be determined I don't think he's going to coach the Terrapins again Matt can of the assistant has moved in temporarily as the interim this is of course a game that Texas lost in time Herman's debut at Austin last year we've got the revenge motive for Texas here the horns got a lot better last year after that opening week in fact I think this is one of the sleeper teams on a national sense this year if the horns can survive this 1st month of the season Ellender the sophomore quarterback has to progress some but the defense they love these of blue chip recruits in the secondary they got for the top 6 rated safeties in the country with Texas in the off season run and they're going to make an impact early for time Herman he gets his revenge here over a disjointed Maryland 3416 or take Texas Arizona's going to open at home against b.y.u. And it looks like the Cougars are underdogs yet they are after a rough year for b.y.u. Ron and everything that could go on did go on for be while you last year especially injury wise they went through several quarterbacks although their top quarterback can't or Mangum he's got a winning record in his career and he is available for this game after Tucson but there are some pressure on Coach Kalani to talking on the low. After 9 losses last year that is rare for b.y.u. So he's under the gun a bit there Kevin someone comes in from Texas a and m. To take over Arizona they've got to take very explosive quarterback he ran up a storm in the middle of last season when he took over the job slowed down a bit late but he's coming into the season as a peripheral Heisman Trophy candidate a lot of excitement for someone and a lot of people in the Pac 12 think this is a team to watch if you are you though it's back to its old form before the injuries last year this could be a competitive game down in Tucson they're not sure the Cougars can win 83473427 let's make that Arizona has a matchup of old whack teams to I think Arizona gets the job done at Tucson u.s.c. Will be opening up at home they're going to have a freshman quarterback but probably shouldn't be tested too hard by un of a lot of a lot of attention on. The true freshman out of modern day he did not even attend spring practice he was still in high school so he showed up in summer and won the job and post Sam Donald here will see how the Trojans fare without a lot of key performers from last year who have moved on to the next level all the way to ever cut short of talent they'll eventually be pretty good this season the question you have for a city this relates more to margin of victory here and is what's upcoming not only you've got the 1st game for your brand new quarterback but Stanford on Texas Arizona comes up later in the month they could certainly be taking ahead especially that game against Stanford next week you know that is not that bad they got a quarterback our money Rodgers they can score some points they won't win but I don't think they'll get trampled here either 4123 se they'll pull away late as they get ready for Stanford next week and certainly one of the marquee games on week number one in the college football season number 6 Washington traveling to Atlanta to take on number 9 Albers. And this is big and it's an f.c.c. Countries kind of in the tiger's backyard it's not a long ride from Auburn to Atlanta there's a lot of people in Atlanta so it's a. Sort of like a semi home game there for the Tigers although they have stopped their toll a few times in recent years and this is sort of a crusade not just for Washington Ron but for Washington and the Pac 12 they could really use a marquee win didn't get one of the bowl season last year and it was a very bumpy road for the Pac 12 sides and Washington has not won its bowl games either the last 2 years so a chance or they got almost everybody backed off and put in a quarterback Jake Browning a legitimate Heisman candidate as is Jared stead of his counterpart and Auburn but all that defense is also back for Washington including everybody in the secondary only allowed 9 t.d. Passes last year very stingy back there and if washes going to get over the hump this is a statement game for the Huskies we think this might be 2723 Washington the Pac 12 sure wants that let's see if the Huskies can deliver on Saturday and number 17 West Virginia do square off against Tennessee but the square off again I'm against I'm not a Knoxville but in Charlotte Yeah in Charlotte the nice neutral game here the crowd would be pretty well split Tennessee kind of excited about its new coach Jeremy Pruitt around about coaching search it turned out to be last December a lot of volunteer people thought this is where Tennessee should have ended up right at the start but they went through several different names changed along the way Phil former the old football coach is now the interim Ag and Jeremy Pruitt now takes over but he's got a real rebuilding job on his hands Ron devolves did not want to game in the f.c.c. Last year and now they go up against a very potent West Virginia side that some people think could be a sleeper perhaps in the national scene this year that's mainly because of the quarterback will Greer posted big numbers last year he is on a short list of highs and trophy favorites and head coach Dana Holder said has made things work with plenty of quarterbacks in the past and he really likes I don't think Tennessee space and through its 1st game 3820 West Virginia will take the mountaineers on Saturday you know it's going to be number 14 against number 12 Notre Dame it's going to be played at South Bend Indiana and I think this is an interesting match up in that. I'm hearing whispers that maybe Jim Harbaugh doesn't have the type of team that he's had in past years and so I just wonder how you see this one shaking out sort of like you do run a mean we've heard some of the same things there especially some Michigan people we don't know some of these alarms are getting a little bit anxious there has yet to be to Ohio State in 3 years his team lost 5 games last year they often struggled they ranked in triple digits in total off internationally so they're a bit disappointed or they want expect a bit more from and let's see if the Ole Miss transfer quarterback shape Patterson and will be the starter here can jump start this off and his top receiver to Rick black though is hurt that could be a negative and Harbaugh does play these mind games with his quarterbacks so this remains to be seen how it all works out for the Wolverines Notre Dame interesting side you got to get some replacing to do after graduation losses the brand Wimbush the quarterback is back Brian Kelly is usually pretty tough to beat there in South Bend and it should be an electric atmosphere at Notre Dame on Saturday night $2319.00 Fighting Irish We think they're going to win this one close it should be a very exciting game under the golden dome and looks like Louisville going to run into a buzzsaw against number one Atlanta excuse me Alabama not only played in Orlando. You know this sort of in a much better match up last year with move will still have Lamar Jackson in the fold now it's a complete rebuild job for Bobby Petrino they sort of underachiever Jackson there anyway and Alabama comes in full of fight and I've got some defensive replacing to do but Nick Saban is far beyond the point where he's rebuilding on defense he just reloads with the next batch of n.f.l. Draftee's you know we'll still see what goes on a quarterback with and jaylen hurts I think they're going to go it too I hear but they'll probably spot hurts in there somehow Nick navigates this throughout the season and keeps it from being a distraction will be important for Alabama but the bigger factor here is Alabama usually jumps out very quick in these neutral site game openers they scored some big wins in recent years Florida State last year u.s.c. 2 years ago crushed and I think. This sort of Louisville team is that good 4516 Alabama another quick start for the tide in Orlando and on Sunday is going to be number 8 Miami Florida against number 25 ls you yeah and this is going to be interesting too because Miami got on the verge last year until late in the season last 3 games I'm not sure about the quarterback Rhodes year he's been pushed in summer here though he is going to stay in the Sadly only completed about 40 percent of his passes in those 3 losses so after they tease that becoming a Final 4 team last year let's see if Miami can close the deal then I start here against l s u which is starting to transfer quarterback from Ohio State job from what we're hearing in the s.c.c. a Little bit of pressure on. Down there it's only his 2nd full season but he doesn't have a lot of rope and I'm not sure Ellis is going to be able to get over the hump if Boro can't deliver better than some people think 2717 were taken Miami and this one on Sunday in about 15 seconds number 20 Virginia Tech against number 1000 Florida State Monday yeah and it will be Tiger said you had Florida state but this will not be easy especially since Virginia Tech's quarterback Josh Jackson has regained eligibility 2422 bridge make that Florida State in a good one Monday night and of course what do you have this week for all of our Sports Byline USA listeners Thanks Ron check us out online dot com our 1st issue up there of the season right now for the gold she can also call us 879 a globe got a special triple threat package for byline listeners go online Golgi dot com or call us 8798 Gold Now you heard Bruce say his 27th year with me here on Sports Byline And just to remind you once again on Thursdays He'll be with me to take a look at the key college games and I'll be coming up break I'm down for you give us analysis and his predictions on the outcome and then he drops back around on Friday to do the same thing with the games in the National Football League and when we come back on the other side we'll take a look at college football overall and get his thoughts on the season we do that on Sports Byline. As well fine senior writer for the gold sheet and we're going to take a look at the college football season overall of the conferences and some of the top teams Bruce was kicking off in the Southeast Conference Eastern Division Georgia of course was $11.00 to the championship game you got South Carolina Florida break it down for me yeah I guess the deal here is anybody going to be able to challenge Georgia we're not sure about that Ron last year it was all Bulldogs in this half of the conference and that probably should be that way again this season Georgia still lauded it did have some significant graduation losses but it looks like Kirby Smart is a stablished a Tuscaloosa annex there and Athens he was on Nick Saban's staff for several years he's a Georgia grad they're doing everything like Alabama their cream of the crop recruiting in fact their new freshman hotshot quarterback Justin fields were guarded so well some people think he might eventually beat out Jake from who was their freshman quarterback discovery last year who caused the previous year's freshman quarterback discovery Chad he's in the transfer the Washington so they're pretty loaded there Georgia there that side to beat Florida is one of my keep an eye on because Dan Mullen has moved over from Mississippi State remember he was at Florida during open Meyer's years he elevated Mississippi State and kept the Bulldogs on a higher plateau got them to number one in the country in 2014 and I think he might be able to turn for the around he's got everybody back from last season but it was very disappointing for the Gators those are the only 2 sides I think have a chance in this half of the conference maybe South Carolina makes a bit of a move with much champ but Georgia one Florida 2 the way they look at it right now over on the s.c.c. West Side it's Alabama and then everybody else Sauber may be a factor in this but what about all Burnell as human. As if the state Texas a and m. Arkansas missed Yeah it's a it's a deeper half over here on this side Alabama of course the favorite as you mentioned there is it should be an Alabama trying for the 6 national title under Nixon even and 9 years which would be quite remarkable but they're the favorite obviously who's going to challenge the offer did beat Alabama last year in fact Nick has only had one completely undefeated season in Alabama since he started winning national titles or so they might find a banana peel somewhere might be Auburn might be necessary the state Joe Morehead coming in from Penn State after Dan Mullin moved to Florida but very impressive We all like to see media days in Atlanta and he seems to be a very even keel sort of coach and he's a guy but that Penn State Office together last year Fitzgerald is quarterback is Healthy Mississippi State could be allowed also keep an eye on Jimbo Fisher he's in there at Texas a and m. Both his quarterbacks start to Lamont played fairly well for Kevin Sumlin last year let's see if the Aggies can hang in there in November which was proven to be the Waterloo for someone but it's Alabama's side to lose but they will have some challenges along the way and don't be surprised if they find a banana peel somewhere that's just been the way it's gone for the Crimson Tide they usually find one loss in the f.c.c. That might not change this year let's go over to the Big 10 and take a look at the East division and of course the big question mark is about Ohio State nickers Urban Meyer one effect that may or may not have on them and if you look at Michigan State as always that defense is going to be outstanding if you take a look at Penn State the McSorley maybe the best quarterback in the Big 10 So break it down for me yeah you're right that in Ohio state of course the urban situation which will be resolved after 3 games he's going to miss the 1st 3 but that puts him back in the saddle for Big 10 season I think this jarred Ohio State that Miers back I think it will end up being pretty much business as usual there on the field at least they do have some graduation losses to to compensate for but when is Ohio State been caught been caught. Running that Dobbins is going to be a potential. Highs and candidate Hosking ask the quarterback stepped in late last season and won that game at Michigan so they'll be fine they're still the team to beat I'm glad you mentioned Michigan State because I think Mark Antonio last year a big bounce back from that uncharacteristic 2016 and 110 games last year they got a lot of guys back working their quarterback and do a lot of things they beat Penn State Michigan last year schedule breaks out pretty well for them I think Michigan State probably the runner up on Ohio State maybe has a chance to knock off the Buckeyes Penn State Pension mixer early we talked about Michigan previously and the Wolverines I'm still not sure about Jim Harbaugh I would actually put Michigan 4th behind Penn State Michigan State and Ohio State with the Buckeyes I think on top in December swinging over the Big 10 West this is an interesting division because you got was confident in the off chance reportedly is there to match the defense and of course defense wins championships then you've got Iowa Northwestern their defensive front could be a killer as well and then you go down to Nebraska they have a brand new head coach and Scott Frost So how does this one look to you it does look pretty interesting Wisconsin probably the team to be like you mentioned almost everybody back on off and putting the software running back Jonathan Taylor almost 2000 yards rushing last year on a short list of serious highs and contenders Ron Taylor is on it let's see how this defense responds after losing 8 starters from a year ago but it was one of the top ranks top units in the country Paul Crist has that machine running pretty well in Madison they're the team to beat it's going to challenge them you mentioned a few Northwestern very interesting their one year last 8 games last season let's see if Clayton forcing their quarterback though is back from that knee injury suffered in the ball game against Kentucky he's sort of the Carson once of the Big 10 if he gets healthy this kid could be a number one draft pick in the n.f.l. So Northwestern you want to watch you mention the brass in the new head coach Scott Frost a lot of excitement there over the Huskers have to make a lot of headway after falling back to around the 500 level I was a contender and Jeff promise made produce relevant in just one quick year. After moving from Western Kentucky this is Wisconsin's half of the league to lose on the Badgers believe they can get to the final 4 if things break right that's our pick and the Big 10 last Let's go over to the Big 12 because I'm just counting scratching my head trying to figure this one out because if you look at Baylor they went one in 11 last season a little bit of a surprise there but of course they have had some changes there and then I will stay Kansas they fired their athletic director but get their coach and a state where Bill Snyder is older than Lincoln. And then you've got Oklahoma Oklahoma State e.c.u. Texas Texas Tech and West Virginia so this is one that's loaded this conference and I think this is going to be one in every one every you know week that there is going to be a different thing that we see about them that makes us scratch your head a little bit more well you're right Ron you know except for Kansas which you mentioned the problems there I mean ever you could any of these other teams could lose any other week I mean there's a lot of it and appeals here that's why it might be tough for one of these teams to get to the Final 4 like Oklahoma did last year no make or break Baker may feel coming back for the Sooners they should still be pretty loaded I talked earlier about Texas have gone way on a limb here with the Longhorns I saw a change in the last year they were very close to one in 10 games last season we'll find out in September how much they've improved like Ellen Joe the quarterback I think the army is a great coach is proving class is top notch and they will be tough the others we talked about will Greer West Virginia potential Heisman candidate Iowa State made tremendous headway last year for Matt Campbell they have got most of their players back they will not be a pushover and you mentioned Bill Snyder listen 78 years old they would let him coach there until he's under Does he want to start to look like he might stick around that long but they'll be well good and functional again maybe not one in the conference but that's a team that could beat any other of the Big 12 and that's what you say about the Big 12 run there's so many banana peels out there it's going to be tough for anybody to get through this league on Sky. And I think one of the dark horses in this conference is West Virginia they have an awful lot of talent and they could surprise some people week after week they could I mean let's talk to the West Virginia people heck they think they could score in the New England Patriots with quarterback I mean this. Has had some big time off and says think this might be one of the best the question for them is going to be if their defense can come around they could be a national factor this year but they certainly have the off and they've got a quarterback who is on the short list for the Heisman you know you take a look at Conrad Murray the quarterback in Oklahoma certainly not Baker Mayfield My fear is always that Baker Mayfield will be the standard for the fans and alarms and everything and that's always a negative thing yeah he's talked a place I mean you mean he was played with such a swashbuckling style and Murray's a different sort of quarterback going to him or read option and stuff like that like and this kid is also baseball players open age draftees you know he's going to probably end up playing Major League Baseball and this might be his last year playing football so let's see if he can step up they do like the software backup Kendall but Lincoln Riley's got some other weapons here Rodney Anderson the running back is a carnival Tilt a Whirl fun to watch He is really something else so they'll be good just doing a little bit differently than what Mayfield Let's take a look at the a.c.c. And land a division it looks like the cream of this division is Boston College Clemson and Florida State how do you see this one shaking out yeah and boy if you're somebody other than Clemson wins this half I'd be very surprised I mean it's got this thing going on it's Bama and that's what they are and I think we're looking very likely at a 4th straight final 4 matchup whether it's in the final game or not I'm not sure but they fight Alabama 3 straight years in Bowl so this will be what the Cavs in the warriors were in the n.b.a. The last 4 years I think we're going to get these 2 again they love that defensive line it's Hudson. I think it might be the best they've ever had their lot of these guys won. Wilkens Bryant they all stuck around for their senior years instead of going to the n.f.l. Where they would have been high picks so they love the defense and they love the new freshman quarterback Trevor launch who could unseat Kelly Bryant there the chain to be Willie Taggart the new head coach at Florida State they've got some ground to make up on Clemson I should mention Boston College watch this running back a.j. Dillon over 600 yards last year highs been trophy Darkhorse although offensive line is back he's going to put a big numbers for the Eagles this fall you and I both remember when we would talk about a couple schools Northwestern Duke and Stanford and schools but don't even think about them as far as being able to maybe win a conference championship that certainly has changed in recent years Northwestern certainly has been going to bowl games and then you've got Duke after strong year from the defense apparently this season's version will be even better and they're in a conference or a division where you've got Georgia Tech in Miami which again there's some questions there the North Carolina had to sit a number of their players for breaking rules and then you got Pitt Virginia and Virginia Tech is this division wide open and I think it is one because I'm not quite as convinced about Miami being that strong as everybody else is the way the hurricanes fell apart last season too because of these teams like the yeah you mentioned that about the Blue Devils they have elevated they've done facility upgrades there David Cutcliffe is General Mark of all job elevating this program in the last decade they are a consistent ball team right now and they like that return is they could be a factor team I would watch over here is Georgia Tech we have seen Paul Johnson do this before sneak up kind of unexpected when he get off sort of an off year but that was a misleading record last year for the yellowjackets they lost several close games take on Marshall their quarterback returns they're going to run the football and nobody's yet figured out how to slow this option in the a.c.c. I think Georgia Tech might be a sleeper team in that half of the a.c.c. Do quite as well and I'm not sure Miami is as good as everybody thinks. We've got about 90 seconds maybe 2 minutes here let's talk about the Pac 12 the north briefly County Oregon Oregon State Stanford Well you've got Bryce love there but how does this division shake out at Stanford or Washington to where I mean some of the other sides might be improved organ's kind of interesting that non-conference schedule is pretty weak but I think this is Oregon or Stanford or Washington the Huskies get the cardinal in Seattle that might be the difference to get Washington in the factual title game this December how good is Chris Peterson's team do you think because he's gone 22 and 5 over the last 2 seasons Well I thought they they slipped a wee bit last year they seem to lack a bit of that edge they seem to think this might be his best team because they've got 16 returning starters and putting several 3 year starters like Browning a quarterback and Gaskin we'll see I think we'll find out a lot about them this game against Auburn if they're really ready to be a national contender or not but they certainly I think maybe have the best in the factual north and let's take a look at the Pac 12 South you mentioned how you like Arizona Arizona State has an interesting situation Herm Edwards is back in the college game after 30 years and then Colorado u.c.l.a. U.s.c. And Utah looks like this is U.S.C.'s division to win but it will come down to how well that freshman quarterback reforms Yeah the schedule is pretty tough and you're right about Arizona State Herm Edwards they love him down there he's a great guy let's see if they love if they lose some games the Arizona is interesting to watch here I would also watch you talk about what he has got to the Utes in that position are always closing to get over the hump this year I think as he slips a little bit with this tough schedule and Chip Kelly to u.c.l.a. Now so there's a lot to look into in this division upset pick it for me is Arizona to win the south we've got about 45 seconds left how about the mid majors u.c.s.f. Navy and Notre Dame Well you know today could be interesting here to be a national force it's going to have to win this opener against Michigan the schedule still pretty tough u.c.s.f. Got into that spot in the New Year 6 bowl. They will work with a new coach just Hi Paul after Scott frost went to Nebraska game to watch might be Memphis this year the schedule breaks right and j. And j. Norville Mychal Bell might get up to 13 and no other team to watch is Boise State the Broncos are always a factor here and if Brian arson thinks he's got one of his best teams so there's going to be a real scramble for that last part of the New Year 6 bull mix then again what do you add Sports Byline USA listeners this week thank you Ron while we got to kick off week here is upon us and the 1st call sheet is ready and we've got a special deal for byline listeners call it our triple threat with all of our publications for one the special price of check us out online go see a doc on com or give us a call 879 to go and ask about that triple threat package Ok Bruce again nice to have you on board for the 27th straight year here on Sports Byline We'll talk to you then next week when we look at the n.f.l.
