Randy Couture joins us on Sports Byline actor former u.f.c. Champion and former United States Army Sergeant also inducted into the u.f.c. Hall of Fame 1st u.f.c. Fight was a win back in 1997 and he fought reporting years and he has competed in a record 16 title fights Randy I remember you from back up in the Seattle area you went to a Lin Wood High School you were a state champion in wrestling What was it about wrestling that kind of bit you. Well I think I got into it for the wrong reasons I was trying to get my my father's attention I heard the whole life what a good wrestler and tough guy he was and the figured if I turned out for the team maybe he'd pay a little more attention to come around a bit more it didn't work out but I found my calling I found my place to rest at all you know from the age of 10 all the way through school through the army and into college in the us for the national team from a long time as well you know things work out you were involved with wrestling in a lot of different ways Greco-Roman wrestling u.f.c. Wrestling as well and then as I said in high school tell me a little bit about the different levels of wrestling and what were the ones that you found interesting as you moved along in your career well obviously started in junior high school in folks knowledge scholastic wrestling. Was a one time state champion in Washington State which didn't give me much recognition on the national scale. Didn't really get the scholarship operating like that out of high school and ultimately ended up in the army wrestling and had at that wrestling was done for me but you know peak of the Cold War 5000000 soldiers stationed in Central Europe you know concern about the Russians coming across the border and all that sort of same lot of very active sports programs to keep morale up and keep the guys pokus in theater in Europe and not winning a u.s. Army Europe championship in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling and I was right 1st real exposure to the Olympic style free Stalingrad go. Unanswered with both of them . Big focus in the military for Greco and Mark coach was a Greco God the Marine Corps was the team to beat back then and a lot of very high level tough Greco-Roman wrestlers on the national stage and international stage. Are not our favorite style in the us we're more collegiate freestyle wrestler so. We have only we had only had I think one world champion and only a couple of the limpid medals in Greco and and so I saw an opportunity to potentially be that next guy the guy to win a World Championship in that style and in focused a lot on Greco fast forward. Through colleges and after college you wrestled for the national team but as it turned out ended up in the cage fighting and using years and years and years of wrestling mindset and training in that venue and Greco is one of those styles that translates very well to mixed martial arts so it turned out I didn't realize it when I was focused on it but it worked out in the 'd end you know Randi it's interesting when you think about and look back upon your career and the things in your life that kind of affected you you mentioned about the dad trying to get your dad's attention there was probably some anger built in there then you think about the military and the single mindedness the being a soldier and then you think about your connection to wrestling and everything you kind of smile a bit Was there any other way you could go. Well you know what I think you hand up when you need to find the people you need you meet people that are most important to you in those times of need and those coaches were important guys in my life taught me that work ethic I want to mother. Kept me on the straight and narrow kick me in the butt when I needed to be kicked in the but certainly at 19 joining the army and the attention to detail the discipline that I learned through training and being a soldier for 6 years affected my view of the world and me as a person pretty significantly as well so those are things I'm thankful for are you also you know oriented toward the fact that when you talk about u.f.c. When you talk and type about the type of wrestling that you did it really came down to what Randy Couture did not like team sports where you have to rely on the pitching of the catching your quarterback and everything else that individuality and the individual performance is really something that I think is interesting in sports where you pleased to be competing in a sport in which you knew you determine the outcome. I absolutely love that that that was certainly something that attracted me to wrestling in get me in it was the individuality of it and I think it's a microcosm of life in some ways you can get out of it exactly what you put into it there's no one else to blame but yourself for are the mistakes or for not doing the work or are not being prepared and. I love that about wrestling and ultimately about fighting to it says same mentality I'm the one that has to walk up in that cage and you know sometimes do it in front of 20 tons of people. That being said I think you know my teammates those coaches and teammates that I've worked with over the years were just as important as my own mindset and willingness to do the work those are the guys that pushed me you know made me better force me to work for you know if I want to get punched in the face or or tapped out on a regular basis then I probably wasn't getting any better and that was that was a direct correlation to those guys I was on the mat with every single day you were the 1st of only 5 fighters to hold 2 u.f.c. Championship titles in 2 different divisions and you went up against some pretty tough guys and when you take a look at where that sport is u.f.c. Is today Are you concerned about the entertainment aspect of it coming in maybe ruining the purity of that. Well I certainly hope that that camaraderie and sportsmanship never leaves our sport and we see a lot of guys being marketed and pushed because they can run the mouse pretty well and some of those guys are backing that up in the cage and some of those guys aren't but we definitely are going through some growing pains is one of the fastest sports on the planet. You know you can find one or 2 organizations that are putting on floating flights just about every single weekend now or you know back when I started in 97 I think there was a chose a year and they spent some time building stars and kind of creating a vested interest whether it was a guy like Tito who you knew was going to talk. But you know or a guy like myself we didn't say a whole lot you get a chance to get to know those guys and what what made him tick and it created that vested interest in seeing them win or lose and I don't feel like they're taking the time to build the stars now and we've got some great guys in the sport guys like Tom Woodley Michael Chandler there's there's a whole slew of them that are amazing athletes but not really get a chance to see behind the scene see what makes them tick you know figure out whether someone I I agree with and want to like or someone I maybe I don't want to like and I think that's a big part of the sport Randi I found it interesting over my years of interviewing athletes I've always found that pro athletes want to be in acting and I found actors want to be pretty. Now you made you made the transition into acting I mean you take a look at your credits a peck spendable is 12 and 3 set up hijacked episodes of Hawaii 50 and you've got another movie coming out tell me a little bit about how that developed in your life was certainly not nothing I ever saw myself doing was never in school pleasuring to draw Marnie about stuff I think that's what I need Jim in the 6th grade Christmas play but that's about it. And so something new. Athletics opened the door in 1908 they were doing a film called cradle to the grave with Jet Li and b.m.x. And had a big cage fighting scene underground cage fighting scene in that film and they wanted some authenticates fighters for the scene so myself Chuck and Tito all got the call. If we'd be interested to come you know come or we can shoot this scene in this movie and that was my 1st time on the set kind of kind of like going to Oz and getting to pull back the curtain see they got back there pulling the levers and making all that fire and all that stuff happened and it was pretty intriguing and immediately went out and found an agent started taking some acting classes in. Trying to get better jobs I thought it was something that I could do for a while and certainly able to juggle it around fighting and wrestling which came 1st at that time. But I feel like I'm just getting better every time I get to go out and learn a little more sharpen some new tools and you know as an athlete who spent his whole life boxing up is about kind of pushing him to the side and staying focused on the task at hand whoever that was standing across the matter of the cage. They want you to get in touch with those things and find ways to approach real things and tap into real feelings and tell the truth while you play a character which is which is intriguing and fun in about 30 seconds tell me about the discipline of wrestling and also the discipline of acting do they affect each other did you learn something from each that helps you absolutely I think there's a lot of things that transition I think being coachable. Having an open mind being diligent and prepared knowing your lines know you know know when you accuse obviously I think I'm going to physicality and authenticity to some of the roles which is how you get into a film like Expendables but. I think there's a lot of things that transfer from from that wrestling and fighters mindset to to acting the grind of it it's a long physical days and you know you've got to stay on point you've got to be ready to go. I want to thank you for spending time with us and talking about your life and about your career I've known you since you were up in Seattle so it was nice to reconnect with you take care my friend you're welcome back here anytime on sports. Jack Morris joins us on Sports Byline Hall of Fame pitcher who played 18 seasons 14 of them with the Troy a season with the twins and then with the Toronto for 2 seasons 5 time all star who won 4 World Series titles with 3 different teams the Tigers twins and blue jays and he was the m.v.p. Of the 91 World Series while with Minnesota and he twice led the American League in wins any through a no hitter against the White Sox 1st of all Jack congratulations but take me back to St Paul and growing up there well it's. A place or I've always called home and nobody else from what I was told You know it's not a. Baseball environment per se it's not Florida it's not Texas it's not Arizona in California but that's a pretty good athlete to play in the Surrey and I'm really proud to say that going to be joining Dave Winfield whoremonger 2 same programs that grew up within a 10 mile circle of each other a pretty pretty awesome environment as far as I'm concerned why did you gravitate toward baseball other than the other sports. I think in an early age certainly recognize that I have the ability to play the game. I have passion for grown up baseball fan to watch the twins. Certainly have my heroes played for the twins and then I guess it was an early dream of mine to play Major League Baseball and I was just one of those lucky guys that never liked my drink you ended up at b.y.u. Playing your college baseball there how did you get all the way out there. You know it was a process all through high school I wanted to sort of but by the time I was teaching here I realized that their schedule wasn't the greatest that there were a lot of guys getting signed out of the u.s. To time the weather was a negative stack of those years. Early in the year when they only had one road trip and that was to Texas so that really wasn't a baseball dynasty I guess and I decided to apply to some of the other bigger baseball schools and realize that I would have been in the same boat to walk out on that usually doesn't bode well for a kid that they don't know and I had a chance to go out to do I you to hear the campus and know that maybe I'm not on the Arizona State Sun Devils But you know we're going to play them over the players on the we're going to play Southern Cal and u.s.c. And some of the great baseball schools of California so you know I figured you know as long as I've exposed and I get to pitch against these guys my opportunity will come out of it turned out that way for me you know as you mentioned b.y.u. Not known as a college baseball school of any type but what point then did you think about maybe I can play at the next level. Well the very 1st time again state I did well number one draft choice out of that year in 1970 s. . 6 I believe it was was for Bannister and he was either recruited in the risk outs $27.00 about. Several of the scouts came up to me after I pitched well against Arizona and they asked me if I had any ambitions of playing pro golf I said that's why there. Are not I think every game I pitched I had at least one or 2 scouts watching everything you were called up 1st of all by the Tigers in 1977 no what did you think the experience of the major league level was going to be like and how was it similar to our different from what you thought Jack. I don't think it was any different than what I expected you know the players were better the best the best you can make the stakes you know but I'll remind you why mistakes don't work. Every time I got behind and left one out of the middle there was somebody telling me why I did it and that's the difference between the minor leagues the big leagues and you can get away with some things to finally expose typically the big league level you have to be on top of your game and it doesn't have success Jack you know as well as I do there's a difference between pitching and throwing and I have talked enough pitchers for them to tell me they can remember the very moment in which they became a pitcher rather than a throw or what about for you. Well again that was a process some of the kick that had a straw. They used to say you can throw the ball through the wall they've got to hit the wall 1st. So there was a while when I was young and I didn't pitch a lot till college but there was that the while you that I learned that I had to throw strikes that part of pitches and getting the ball over the plate where you want to be learning when to speak it's which is where I started my changeup you know I just kept progressing from there it really wasn't until college that I focused on pitching was there anybody that took you kind of underneath their wing when you were young because invariably back during that time when you came up that happened there was a lot of mentoring that would go along at the major league level you know of so many people to think the list would last the end of this interview plus another couple hours. It's just simply I was blessed to be in a in a very competitive environment as good coaches took it seriously made us work hard and try to become better players and you know winning was important it wasn't a trophy for everybody it was just the winners and you know we wanted to we want to celebrate so it was some great competition I was blessed to be around some great coaches at the youth level Jack one of the things that I know about teams is that they play and unique markets I think each market has a personality of its own Chicago New York all of those but tell me a little bit about the Detroit market about the stadium old Tiger Stadium with that whole atmosphere playing baseball there and I think Detroit has got a unique attitude to the city the state of Michigan general especially Detroit but surely it's a city that I think they take it personally that they don't get a lot a lot of it's you know ironwork and city that that make automobiles and hardworking people but you know that ideal weather especially in the wintertime you don't see the sun too much and they really embrace their sports team that's. Way to. Kind of let loose and enjoy life in general sure they're a sports team so when I did the time when I signed with Detroit I realized how much they cared about their tigers and that I was proud to say 'd I was kind of like them I was at work and stuff that went out there and grab it out of the gate try to be as good as I could be you know it's interesting sitting here in San Francisco I've been down to Spring Training and you always see Willie Mays in the clubhouse at spring training and I suppose for Detroit it's more al Qaeda line Tell me a little bit about him and your interactions with him over the years well once you know he was a guy that when I got there everybody is ready to give a Hall of Famer and Tiger players of all time you know he's been. His passion for baseball's never never vanished at all he's still around the organization still trying to do his part to make them better you know he's with them if you try to life whole adult life I should say and you know he is a guy that has tremendous respect because of the way he goes about his daily business and I was lucky enough to play golf with him the other day and that 80 plus years old again still hits. Things even at this time of life yeah I know in my conversations with him I was impressed not only with what he did in baseball but the gentleman he did as well I know when you were with the Detroit Tigers called up in 77 you had a teammate by the name of Mark Fidrych And I think anybody that grew up watching baseball Detroit baseball remembers how unique he was his personality in everything tell me a little bit about him well he was he was a heck of a guy you know his quirks on the mound where you talked of baseball brushed the rubber off with the good all those antics that's how we got the nickname the Bert reminded people of. The cartoon character that. He was a hardworking guy people don't realize when he got hurt he busted his tail trying to come back and he did everything he could ask of him to try to come through that injury and unfortunately it just never really came back around that. You know I was there with him so many of those workouts because I was going through you know or the 2nd time he got hurt I have the exact same injury and we did a lot of things together and I'll tell you what he pushed me and pushed me and pushed me because he wanted it so bad to get back he had a phenomenal rookie year anyway it tasted the glory of what baseball can give you because of his work ethic and so if you want to get back to that someday but it just never was meant to be we have about a minute before we have to break but when I look at the other the Tigers I take a look at Lance pair. Take a look at Alan Trammell Lou Whitaker Kirk Gibson and of course Sparky Anderson your manager there each team seems to have a personality what was the personality of the tigers during that time well I think Sparky set the tone you know he came over after winning championships with the Big Red Machine that he you know I think he saw a very talented young group of guys that were lost that they needed some counseling and he took it upon himself to try to mold us in what he believed would become winners and the trick worked out we had a lot of guys a character we we we worked hard we had a laugh together but we also played the game the right way and Sparky demanded that . But every guy had brought his own little piece of the puzzle and you know when you look back at your career you realize how many guys really make contributions that don't get the credit you know you didn't mention one of my favorite teammates left fielder Larry are going you know he was a quiet guy didn't get a lot of kudos across the baseball world but he was a huge part of our daily routine and I don't think that we could depend on him for big it's just kind of a quiet leader when you have Kirk Gibson Jack Morris who are the more. Graceful guys that get up and try to get the guys fired up with everybody else kind of selling between Jack Morris with us now we can say Hall of Famer pitcher Jack Morris we'll talk more about his career and also his World Series championships as we move across the country and around the world on sports by a lot. Jack Morris has joined us here on Sports Byline USA We're talking about his Hall of Fame career and of course 4 championships World Series championships which we'll get to in just a 2nd you mentioned about Sparky Anderson I always enjoyed my conversations with him because he was thoughtful he also was very candid tell me what it was like to play for a man like that well I guess. But madness behind you know we just we just accepted him as a guy that already wanted that he must know what he's doing a lot of us guys question some of those early antics and how we came in and kind of told everybody is going to weed out the rats and it was his way or the highway and those kind of things but when was all said and done we realized that he cared more about us as people that he didn't do the part of his baseball players and that we truly were his family he loved baseball and he stuck to his entire life pursuing that So you know I look back it's one of the United States. Then who I was without his influence he told me in. The kitchen at the start and finish his games and he insists that I keep working hard. You know blur learn along the way and. Get a gratitude another guy that probably is very helpful and I got to know him here in San Francisco when he was the manager of the Giants was Roger Craig he was the pitching coach and in 1980 he taught you how to throw the split fingered fastball which I know some people called a 4th ball tell me a little bit about how you took that on as a pitch. Well actually. Throwing. My teammate who. Souter. He was showing me in the bullpen on the bludger gets credit for and I think Roger deserves credit for that because he saw the effect. That he wanted all pitchers to try to learn how to throw it so he deserves a lot of credit for what he did not only for us to change teams as well what I loved about Rogers he was he was in my corner we fought like like brothers sometimes we bumped heads didn't agree with everything but I. Wanted to be the best I could be. I really love Roger for that. He was always in my corner and always wanted me to to show the world that I could be what whatever it was that I became and I remember the 1st time I ever saw that pitch I was a youngster and I was raising my grandparents and Parkersburg West Virginia and we used to always take a summer trip either to Pittsburgh or Cincinnati and El Roy face was throwing on the 4th ball and everything and I had never seen anything like that jacket just kind of dropped off the table. And he was one of the original owners of the pits in fact if you if you think what ball of baseball and buyer of yours it was over my face because that was a fork you know the terminology changed in the ninety's and early 2000 as a split finger but. The truth is the one that really drops off the table is looks like a soft ball coming out of the Get your sand I know all players particularly pitchers are competitive and yet when you think about Anderson as them as a manager of the team he had the tendency to want to pull his starters at the 1st sign of weakness How hard was that to deal with that well and he treated me differently in fact we had a conversation early in our time together and he told me this is Jack he says I need you to be a guy that finishes games is sick we can go to the bullpen every day and you're the guy that can get it done so I don't know how to tell you how to pitch I never to think about it he said you're going to have to figure it out and he says the best way I can teach you to figure it out is I'm not coming to get you you're going to have to go up there get through it and quit trying to finish things before their time you gotta slow down and just relax and make sure you make that pitch of late in the game it taught me a valuable lesson because it embarrassed me a few times I really really sucked up a lot of once in a couple of games but took majority of the year to get the right to respectability but. Through that process I realized the importance of Sparky's really trying to teach me and you know once I figured it out I didn't want him to come again when have. You thought that but I think that's what she expected to be anyway everyone it was all said and done we helped each other be better you know I've always wondered when a manager comes out and he's trying to make a decision whether to take a picture out or not what was the conversations you would have on the mound with him when he came out to talk to you Well I like telling the story because it's a true story a. Story because he speaks highly of me. On time he was coming back up for the 2nd trip in the same building and I realised if you cross is the 3rd baseline I'm out of the game and I was only trailing by 2 runs and I was in the 5th inning and act on a lot of pitches I was struggling walked away too many guys but I still have a determination to finish and so I ran a lot of 3rd base line across the line and he looked up as bum traded to me and I said What are you doing where you've gone and he kind of looked dumbfounded I said Sparky wherever you go I want to knock down the bullpen is never going to be as good as my worst day he turned around with back to the dugout and I went back to the mound finished the game. That is a great story Jack it really really is I know after baseball you've been doing broadcasting and everything and the Tigers had one of the greatest broadcasters ever and Ernie Harwell and I wonder if you have some remembered says about him. All of Bates' your memory I have learned he never said a word about anybody he always had time to say don't matter who he was talking about but takes a special person and he he wants to support since he had a gift to the to put her from the radio it's. A good game that we love that. But I think the bottom level I just think about what a class guy he was and how much respect because to the people that wrote in 1991 you had the opportunity to go back home to the Twin Cities area and you had just a great season with the twins they win the World Series you face the Atlanta Braves in the World Series you started 3 times in that series you went to a know a 1.17 e r a making the final out in the deciding game 7 but it was your performance in the in the postseason that you were 36 years old at that time you threw out 10 inning game of shutout baseball against the Braves as the Twins won the World Title Tell me about that game and how it flowed along. Well if there was ever came that you think was meant for you that when you came in I think the fact that I had so much confidence that I was at the peak of my physical ability 'd and baseball mentally physically I was in a zone right ever before or ever again so you know it just certainly seemed like the stars that lined up because that day was meant for be when I recognized that's the crazy thing is if I knew what was going to happen the way it happened. The brains were a great team they were going to fight hard that Walton and his broken bodies were going to give us a battle and I just figured you know. I'm just going to do that much I'm just going to do it one up and that's all I have to do it was a it was a great great ending to a great year with my teammates in Minnesota you know the herb x. And gladdens and pockets so many guys. They were just we were a team we were. Against. Because you can be you know you can because of our manager Tom Kelly Yeah the Kirby Puckett on the conversations I had with Kirby over the years I was always struck by how humble he was but he also had a passion and a love for the game like you did as well what was the essence of his success as a baseball player you think. I sum it up in a pretty pretty conversation people ask me all the time that Kirby Puckett really say before Game 6 boys jump on my back I'll carry it tonight and I said absolutely he said that before the game and he said that before every game that. I can't talk so much trash but in the right way he went out every day small them out of his ground ball back to the pitcher a long drive Alessio just went to down the 1st baseline. Example. Is there one particular moment in that World Series that still sticks with you today Jack. I think about a lot of them READY. We went to we need every vote on every game at home and not one of us want to give them the. Truth is. Actually found them I would never go out there to have my greatest moment baseball so. It's funny in the fact that. Sometimes you don't know what the plot of the living winds up to. It's all just to on that series because both teams played their hearts to the top of each team. And after winning the World Series in 1991 you go on then to play for the Toronto Blue Jays you face the Braves again in the World Series and you go back to back and winning those World Series and I never understood why Seato Gaston never got an opportunity to get another managing job tell me he was a kind of a low key guy how did that work with the personalities on the team well this is the perfect game for them to do. Climate leader involves 3 managers that I was lucky enough to win a World Championship. Series probably the quietest. But he knew what he was doing the displaced he saw the talent we were all star team with. Us and she didn't know that it's just expected us to be men your example we got out of the way and you know I look back at him in this and I thank him so many times for the way he went about his business every day and the essence of their success back to back 2 years for Toronto was it just the talent or was there more to it well thought out of play but we knew that if we just wished we had a little bit different a different level of an athlete than the other teams had to go and you will need then you can turn it up with the 7th inning and still win the game with the trailing by 2 just because you know you're confident you can do it is a fun fun time up in trot all of you know we're talking about a country and a city that embraces hockey as their national sport but they forgot about the maple leaf for a couple of years up there as to the fun I remember broadcasting the game up there when they opened that stadium and Jose Conseco had a ball that I think came down to Newfoundland it was hit so hard but you guys win in 6 against Philadelphia and that 6 game that dramatic home run to this day that in my experience is one of the great moments of baseball. You know it's always going to be a great moment to a lot of close games we can get you know one series 'd that doesn't get any better I mean the only thing that's better is if you're the guy on the mound you get stronger shutout I think a few things or whatever to dreams of right right got to get to witness it personally on the mound and not in one of the I got to see it firsthand from the dugout when Joe Carter got his walk off in the World Series I want to ask you about what you said when you announced your retirement you had a quote I don't want to be 2nd best and I think I would have been I was surprised to hear that what were you trying to say with that comment well and then I could have hung on and sometimes I look back and said Jackie had 5 years left engine you could've won you know between 8 and 12 games a year. For 300 and there would have been very little discussion. Or maybe your role and in Cooperstown but I I wasn't satisfied with you know 500 pitches that's. Not an attractive chips to go out there and struggle just to be able to keep the uniform was not my idea of 'd being after all all the wonderful times that I have to give you we have a little bit over a minute left but you did retire in 1996 however you came back for a brief return playing with the St Paul Saints of the independent Northern League and at 41 you went by Been wanted 10 starts a 2.69 ers were you just trying to get it all out of your system before you finally did walk away. You know it's funny I would track and I probably should have taken the offer of was given to the Carroll strawberry and I want the same team to extend for I have a chance to sign with Yankees get 100 done made it better. And I have 2 weeks whatever and just get on a dive in the AAA level and demanding. Well Greeks are you know the East we want to do the same thing they will be the big cheese States it's up to the rebels and anything of this. To me is even if you give it a monkey in a minor league situation like little kids and the big d. Maybe it's game sitting here but the reality was I want to get into the teams and medals home I want to one more call to play the hook it's loans and you know there was an interest at the probable cause and to McCall it's and I just say.
