Thank you as were in our 30th year as the 1st national sports talk show so again that's right there on the home page at Sports Byline dot com Well still abuzz about the Super Bowl and Patriots a course putting down sitting down cornerback Malcolm Butler and you have to still wonder and there's still controversy outrage confusion and there are reports the butler broke team rules before the game and today he finally addressed the incident and in doing so he denied the reports that he missed curfew and he also thanked the team because he probably won't be there any longer and even his teammate Tom Brady like that Butler's post on Instagram and commented writing love you Malcolm You're an incredible player and teammate and friend always so what does that tell you about what the locker room was like when it was learned that the butler was not going to be starting in that game I'm going to make a prediction right now and mark it down on this date February the 6th 2018 and that is that Bill Belichick will not be the coach at the end of this year. Another words at the end of the season within this year he will not be at some point the coach I think he's going to walk away I doubt that they would bar him but they might move him away and just just think about that situation he would not have sat down Tom Brady if Brady had such done something minor infraction if Brady hadn't practiced particularly good during the course of that week so I predict that he will move away and I think he's probably pretty tired of the whole situation Josh McDaniels by the way has announced he's not going to Indianapolis he's going to stay on with the New England Patriots we're going to talk to Gail Devers when we come back and continue with more of you on Sports Byline the year is here and it's time to honor those resolutions to look your best Dr Edward brings decades of experience as a plastic surgeon to help you where you need it most. What I think of courageous athletes I 30. Certainly Thank you Gail Devers American track and field sprinter and her lawyer and she joins us from Sports Byline Gail good evening to you how are you I'm fine how you guys when people say courageous What does that mean to you when you look at all that you went through and all that you've had to deal with Oh well actually just to me it lets you know that I'm blessed to be honest to me is talk about what I what I have gone through and never in my life from what I have a mad been having to have to go through my Graves disease and the amount of injuries and illnesses that I have had and still be they will each time to keep coming back and people count me out and I always say I have a guardian angel on my shoulder and as long as I live my life I think to work out OK yeah one of the things I've observed of highly skilled athletes is their involvement in sports at a highly skilled level really helps them with some disciplines in dealing with challenges that maybe other people would have trouble with that would you agree with that statement I would definitely agree I mean just like you say when you are involved in sports teaches you the dedication the discipline the goal setting the never give up attitude the perseverance and I could say that I was able to carry that thing absent that I learned something involved in sports so my personal life when I was dealing with my illness that you know people count me out I'm not going to count myself on the keep belief and faith in myself that somehow this is going to work out I'm determined I mean even when you look at my goal from the beginning of my career has always been to win a gold medal in the 100 meters and in the 100 meter hurdles and I'm known more so as a hurdler but yet I have the medal hurdles. I'm not letting that stop me that's actually one of the reasons why I'm still out here running and going to Sydney in 1990 you were diagnosed with Graves disease tell everybody what that is a great disease is a byway condition the most common is called hypos I would have a more you hear of people complaining about weight gain but Graves disease is the opposite I was under 89 pounds at my worst I had no here constantly tired state of depression and this is out of your young age it's usually people assume that it a bit of effect older people but I was 2021 when it happened to me. And it went on for 2 and a half years before someone could actually diagnose me as what was going on I've never heard of a thyroid didn't know that you have to have one to live and what your thyroid does is it's essential granted influences every So organ and tissue in your body and it just I was going from Doc the doctor in order to tell me what was wrong and I had to stop running as my heart rate was so high that there was a socket you know this close and have cardiac arrest out here because I could do little to nothing it would go on 85195. Once I was finally diagnosed I went through a reactive way to ask if I don't see them basically drinking the radiation and truly got my life back you almost had your feet amputated and you I had on you know it was it was the weirdest thing I woke up one morning and I had blisters on my feet again they were unexplained so of course they sent me to a podiatrist who tells me you know you know this isn't have anything to do with your graves disease you have athletes you know Mike I don't think so and you know we go through a series of him giving me medications that eventually the medications were gone but the. The symptoms were still there the medicine got to the point where would he wash off much he was swelling they were moving with the fluid and this happened in a matter of probably 7 or 8 days going back and forth with him on the phone and tell him you know you don't need to come in and just take them over towns and act and you'll be OK and once I finally when you know it it gotten to the point where I couldn't walk in my was crawling around in the pain was so excruciating that it just felt like my feet was on a fall off and I was so so I was very lucky that had I walked on them for a couple more days that would have been the case so. I think even knowing that in coming back the year after this happened in March and I cannot be one coming back that next year in $92.00 in Barcelona at the Olympics. My friends tease me like why were you running your victory lap before actually supposed to savor the moment the camera man with a household Well you know and I just remember being thankful that it was not long ago that I was crawling around playing to be able to walk again and here I am taking a victory lap because I want a medal for myself and my country you know one of the things that I think is fascinating is that I know. A highly skilled athlete also their psyche their self-confidence is so fragile and yet you were able to rebuild in a short period of time and be able to compete at that high level in the Olympics in Barcelona was not a major challenge for you to get that psyche to get that focus back there when you had to deal with so much physically it is I mean it's hard enough when you just have an injury when you come back from a hamstring injury and going through is that mental or is it physical you know and then to deal with what I had to do it was very hard but I have to give credit to my support system definitely to my coach who is the greatest in my being one of the greatest motivators in the world and I have even gotten to the point that even if I wasn't believing in myself my coast believed in me and I knew that if he believed in me I could do it and that's that was the team that put us back together you know what's interesting about Bobby is that he certainly is a taskmaster he's a man that will push you I'm being Mizar and I am exactly what you know. What I find fascinating about it is that that he also has to understand when to paddle back and when to kick in the rear I give you a little talk a little bit about that relationship and how he helped get you back Bobby is always so people you kind of like everything rolled up into one he's my mother my father I mean I kid you not I mean there's times we call him Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde because you come out on the track and everybody's trying to feel you know What's his mood what is the OK you know especially if they want to practice before you like how it is you know you come out there and one day he just laughed in a talk in advance and he loved country music so he was like we know all the country songs there are in mankind he's singing to you and then the next minute he's curse and you're out for us wow with that come from what we do you know but he like you said he you know like for me he always tells me I don't I'm not a true sprinter because I don't naturally have that tenacity So yes it may come out of me and he knows the buttons to push to get me upset but. My anger goes towards him where I'm more trying to prove to him in the stands and I am to anybody else out on the track because he said I can you know I was he was when I was 1st my freshman year at U.C.L.A. You put me in a race in a world class race not a collegiate race and the man said Everyone take a slice off and we're getting way to get the blacks in and he's like come here here here here. I said come here by walk over to him he's like I just want to tell you you know you go out there I know you're young have a good race but don't. Just look at him. I didn't say a word I mean and he always tells me I don't curse and he's like if you will if I say no you don't need to use the words I just want back to the race got on my block ran the race and I actually won now because I met him though and I'm proving some things about me I come back up to him I said look I want to you want to I'm a messed up but I don't choke walked away from that he knew that was the relationship that we had and we've had this forever and he knows and people will see him pull me over the last and they're like wow you're going off or you. he knows what the takes a get me going inside and everybody can't bring that on of me and he house and i was always he's only person i would ever let coast the one thing than he does better than anything else gail miss again as just an observation from a distance on him so feel free to correct me if i'm wrong on this but i think that anybody did he involved himself with if he says i'm going to keep my it myself to you then he is not going to let that athlete except anything less than a 100 percent not going to let you accept mediocrity at any time during your life or your professional performance never i mean that that of foes flew in that and that's what i mean to know bobbie use to love him because you know he can be difficult looking on the outside e.-n. But he's besa type person he was not swire respect him because i know when i'm being yelled at our where he's you know was kicking me in the tail is because i needed and it because you see you something in me that's going to prevent me from risa my full potential him to not let that happen you look at the people that he you have coat in the success that he has is because he dove like you say he dedicate me he sleeps and track and feel or what it is that he's good at that he needs to do to gets you going to get through to be your bet the me to this day he still blames himself for me fall in the over that hurdle were 9000 because he's said before i went out to the tracked he didn't tell me something some my quest and i met them to do with you you say any still he walt i mean recall back and forth and he's still except the boy is with us when i think about grade track and field champions in a lead big chappie and yourself i think an flow joe i think of also jackie join a keirsey i think of carl lewis what is the commonality in in all of you i mean is it the great hard is that the gray competitive spirit I'm wrong devotee 1st of all and it's just you know I was saying when people set goals for themselves and they really work to see that those goals are accomplished and they don't let other people deter them from achieving the things that they have set out to do in their life things work out fine final question when you walk off that track to the last time in a competitive nature what would it be that you'd like to remember and what would you like people to remember about Gail Devers. That I gave my all in anything that I did I gave 100 percent and what will you remember most about what you did. How many years I was. Just this hard work I mean I always tell people that you know the medals are fine and that's something that bass but I have so when I have grandkids they'll know that grandma did win a gold medal but you can't take away the years you can take away that you know the illnesses the injuries the trials and tribulations all that I went through to get to that point and that's what I want to remember those are things as embedded in me because setting goals and achieving those goals there's no better feeling and that will let me know the team to come through yeah I want to thank you for your time and also not only for what you've done on the track but also for the person that you happen to be you are certainly a role model to an awful lot of people thank you for your time thank you very much Same to you guys Gail Devers American track and field sprinter and hurdler but more importantly than that once he overcame with that Graves disease and other injuries to become a champion We'll take a break come back on the other side continue across the country and around the world with you on America's sports talk show. Oh I don't think so I thought I think I did about everything that they could have done. Were you pleased with everything that you did well. And there are always plays but. For the most part I. Work hard prepare do my homework and then you're the victim of what you get if you get an exciting game a good game. You know you've got to. Get to work hard to make something out of it so you hope to get lucky that way yeah I've often said that a good game gets a good broadcast a bad game gets a bad bra. You know a lot of people do their jobs and some people like them some people don't how would you characterize what you did for 45 years. My wife said many times you know I like you you are I said no way I may have complaining you're moaning about something that has you have a job you love that you know how many men. You had that kind of a job you did and I said well I never looked at it that way but I love doing it and it was true also. A competition with a cuppa to sit with my self to thank the people had you going and there was always that kind of excitement. When you have a job like that I think you're very lucky very interesting how you got into the profession with winning a national audition back in 149 I was a bad casting baseball out in the Texas legal Oklahoma City also was doing the University of Oklahoma football games and read Hodges to figure the change in New York he left the Yankees he was working with Mel Allen rest took over the giant broadcast in New York and that led to hoping that with the Yankees. I got this letter from George Weiss the general manager of the AG that if I refer to. As said in the US will example of my work in the brochure of myself and so I did I think there are about 300 that says that in the minor leagues it was minor league or big lot of minor leagues scattered all over the country and then the Samurai got a telegram from George Weiss saying they narrowed it down to 3 when I come in the yard for them for an interview and went to New York and they were over here whenever the Yankee offices waited around Mel Allen was supposed to meet me up there any I never knew in the course. There were these were good I was sort of in awe of him and he came in and he has me but I don't want to have lunch with him as a sure so we went over and he's looked. At you through the left up to me and I'm picking you you're my choice and I says Well it's wonderful and we've got to go back and he said to meet George Weiss and. The file stamp of approval and then popping the owner so I went back and he was in the office as it were could I could read guys with the Yankees. He said well what kind of money the one. You can get a guy. Take whatever I can get a great break for me and copping a member the owner he was a multi-millionaire a lad he's welcome on your list. Despite a little contract with him and shook as a lot that I was a Yankee and that says I was a part of the biggest break of my career one of the dynamics of broadcasting in New York at such an early age well. Then was really the Mecca of baseball broadcasting now I'm with the Yankees and Red Barber with the Dodgers cutting Desmond working with the moon was great in that through turn into an alcoholic. Revises went over with the with the Giants when I joined the Yankees I was the youngest and I was there in the Major League. But there was a lot of pressure on you but that was the top job in sports that were job where much in those days that using was had been with C.B.S. In the those 3 when N.B.C. And they did 10 or 12 football games a year on the network and maybe a few scattered other events Stern had his co-create. News reel show Sports News real show. That we're going after and it was a system that was to do because that word didn't preempt any programming for sports they didn't think that greater that big so they left it alone so the best job in sports with a baseball job and New York City you know also was in my at least my opinion current probably the golden age of baseball you had the Giants you had the Yankees and you had the Dodgers and when I've talked to various players from that particular area era from those teams and I've asked them to kind of describe it when you listen to him you can almost get that visual picture of what it was like with the different fans the rivalries that existed and the great players that were all in one particular location that played the game. Well that's right and because I still have a radio play by play the biggest challenge there is for sports announcers putting that game in the list is mine letting him see that white flag or that green wall or . Green grass to the fans making him really live the game in his own mind and it was a wonderful challenge and still my favorite form of sports guys. But you have the 3 clubs as they came back after World War 2 This is. Came back in 46 this is 40 that in the baseball was about about a speak that. David Halberstam and Brooke. The Summer of 49 I think really catcher baseball that he wrote. The great pennant race between the Red Sox of the Yankees Ironically I was with the Yankees and 1950 when I went up with the Red Sox in the game they're number one in that. But that was my 1st year in the big leagues and whether your break Yankees were that were supposed to with the Red Sox were favored Yankees had a rookie manager named Casey Stengel he was about 55 or 60 and they did have 3 great benches rashly rattles Lopez got off to the fast and were leading the league most of the way and it was out of the last 2 days of the season when the Reds came in the stadium all the Red Sox headed to win one game and they had the Bennett but they blew both games in the eighty's with a better than the big upset but the her 7 it was packed with the excitement roaring excitement especially with the Red Sox. And I don't think people out baseball really realized how much impact the game had on the public. Kept everybody reputation day after day. What were the early days of broadcasting as far as television go as far as sports because as you pointed out the networks were really not in Aberdeen with sports at the very beginning when they started doing well as sort of a pioneer not not exactly the 1st one but when the early ones to to do television that I remember Mel and I did. I think 37 games on television and they had the Ballantine beer and white our cigars were the spices and then when the wire took over they all or they did games. We could we couldn't work because there was another beer on the telly. So they brought in busy being to do that. And I did half again as in the old is the rest. And you had 3 cameras one a back home plate one a back of the one a bag of 3rd. Just show you that people. Get spoiled the people really thought it was a miracle to watch a baseball game and there were 3 cameras in the see the game was played and that was sort of crude but it was I didn't know any better that was as good as they've ever had it then later they added a center field camera that was a big controversy the baseball stars say hey this is getting too good they can see the catcher signals and see the pitches break over home plate and the ad of the 5th the 6th but I was bad guys to get the days of the 3 cameras baseball and I went to the Red Sox That was the way it was also I did all the basketball at Madison Square Garden and we're talking with Kurt galley and reminiscing with him and if you'd like to join us walking up the lines across the country wherever you might be we'll talk about how the American Sportsman got started and will continue on with Sports Byline and we're Curt Gowdy. Has joined us tonight you know Kurt every area has its distinction for athletes but I think the New England area in the Boston area certainly did stand out in those days because you had somebody like a Ted Williams and then you think of a Larry Bird you think of a Bill Russell and the great Celtic teams and everything can you talk a little bit about the that particular time in New England Sports in Boston and all the great players they had that you dealt with when you were with the with the Boston Red Sox and others in that area but I want to keep up the broad. Powerful T. . 51 I think they had a team batting average of the over 302 pitches it was kinda a Melbourne L. That's all the Red Sox had ever had any pitching and they had good pitching 46 when they ran away with a pennant I remember Casey Stegall telling me that the execution got a sore arm when he was 29 years old he was the best pitcher the league make it has won 17 games he got wiped out with a bad arm and a boo for $124.00 games and he got a sore arm and there was a tire pitching staff wiped out and he said Jackie had bad luck and he kept those repaired to the one who were over 30 years old respectively were the ones I was expensive most days so I came up there and they had the wood in the body door and they had the Maggio and Junior Stevens in it a great baseball team but just not good enough to beat the Yankees didn't have the bitchy when I arrived the Celtics had 3 good players Bob Cousy those charming and easy and McCauley but nobody could get the ball off the boards and I did there gave. A television radio here in Boston $51.00 and then they made a trade with the Lewis hawks of the draft the Bill Russell and the Celtics traded McCauley cliff begun to say Lewis for Russell sort of the guy resolute Holt I changed He's a best defensive setter that ever lived in a with a great rebounder timing block and then on the Celtics run their way they want to leverage jabbing chips in 13 years and one year Russell it's Brady's ankle didn't play the playoffs or they wouldn't want to read about a 30. Games over the Celtics of course is a one in 4 way and we went over the Chinese risk that he was rubbing his hands through his hair and moaning. Jones. What a pain in the Army. He says Casey Jones the same to. Moaners and I did that given the playing time. I really feel sorry for you Bob Cousy ability I mean the best back court. And the 2nd best back court is Casey Jones and . The 4 best guards in the N.B.A. Russell Frank Ramsey left at the is that secret of the Celtics is that the best buy players but the best players in the league and they have that depth right on through and I believe the Celtics because I had to go to spring training that was March that was playoff basketball so I didn't get to do the game to Johnny Most took over but I wanted to they were exciting and it was funny the town was a hockey team. The Bruins were not a good team but they sold out in the salaries were spreading the gate attendance and finally it took a long time the Celtics overpass the hockey and the cave and never one winter sports team and let's go around the country and I guess it's only probably we keep it off in Boston with Steve Steve you're driving around Boston and I go yeah yeah I'm on my way home are going to mean I don't have a question for Kirk Audi do you think that the ownership of the professional teams like the Celtics. 1 are as a. Allowing the coaches and the general managers to have a. Well I think we just lost me probably went right into a tunnel maybe you'll call back let's go to Tom in Boston go ahead Tom go ahead. Write a flash for you right now with. Larry price growth 20000500 . For free. But you get a trivia. Yeah no do you know who the other 4 were Kurt can you help out and he was really at what he said my 20000 points right. That one was a forward with the St Louis ox that came out Alice I can't remember his name really clear it was an Elgin Baylor what I was Elgin want to him Tom I'm very right yeah who are the other 3 Tom. That's Bob Pettit. Haven't they ever Yeah and so I haven't checked. OK Do you have a question for occurred or not Tom. OK thank you very much Ana build you Washington John your turn. Number one were to rule number 2 we're told that some of the players at Wyoming. Were a couple of the best players ever played against I went to Cheyenne high school in Wyoming and. I think we still had the best high school team they ever had missed they we were in the 33 games in a row before state champions and lost the opening game of the state tournament the team we beat about 30 people I threw in a season and went the University of Wyoming played basketball there and the Hall of Fame coach Everett Shelton. Graduated there in 1982 the playback or weekend sailors it was a great player and All-American and then next year wow me won the N.C.A.A. a Championship and be the winner of the ID The Red Cross benefit game but we had a better 242 than they had in 43 but we lost our 1st 2 games in the conference and then went undefeated the rest of the way but was too late. In those days I played against a man I'll never forget who was the 1st jump shooter in basketball I keep hearing that it was Johnny Adams of the University of Arkansas. He talked about sailors he was a strict jump shooter. He'd go up and shoot out his way up but the jump shooter goes up at the top of these jump shoes the ball that he goes when he's going up before that he says he played as that's what a shot is so effective added with a 2 handed jump shooter he was about 6 feet 3 that have to come off the floor at the time of the jump to hand he was the 1st jump shooter I ever saw or anybody else ever saw and he was impossible as that I'll never forget there was a western in CA that we played in my junior year and I went back the next year I said was that guys guys up like I said experiment around myself with a jump shot but never quite developed it and then the but is that everybody in America was shooting one at a jump shot but I'll never get him as one player play the guess that was standing Tom anything else oh that's a great you're great credit to sports and any of the fields if you don't in football basketball baseball hunting etc and I wish you continued success thank you very much going our Ok you have some kind of courses from this to get you know like to know what was the most memorable 4th to his out of these years of working for N.B.C. What was the best sport that he described thing B.C. The most memorable moment Howard Yes And then I might have been paired this one thing in a 1900 version I could have 70 and I'll take my answer off the Yankees Howard that 1st of all the both memorable event I ever did was in the most thrilling it was Super Bowl 3 when The New York Jets upset the ball of our colts and everybody sort of scoffed at the A.F.L. Up until the end when Joe De Mint led his team to victory down in the orange glow of Miami. Tremendous upset the Jets were 20 point underdogs and won that game then right away the American public's mind said hey they have as good as the N.F.L. It still wasn't as good from top to bottom but 3 or 4 the team the Jets the Chiefs the Raiders were great teams that could be with any in the N.F.L. That was my biggest thrill because of the impact it had a pro football and how it changed the future of the gate. When the most underrated teams that ever played baseball was the Oakland A's in 1970. And it's a shame that team was broken up early that they had kept under the bed and Reggie Jackson and right field Riley figures that great but you have a. Blue Moon or 2 Moon the on the on the line and Kemp and Harris is short it was a team that had not even reached its peak it they all were 26272829 years old they were just coming into their maturity about the best ages for a baseball player about 28 to 32 and they won 3 world championships in a row and Charlie Finley reneged on surance got direct payments to Catfish Hunter who had the legal reasons to break a contract and he did and then that started to free agency started and fairly soon because of the way Finley handled the players and the rebels they had with the players and thirdly they broke up the A's I think though they would have won 5 or 6 world championships in a row now this pope a team is a great team I don't think it was a big upset so isn't that a beating Oakland they got a lead that bullpen the Cincinnati Zoo is rented for the opponent but it was an upset that what in 4 games now that's twice at Oakland got in a heavily favored against the dodges and Cincinnati and lost the series so until they do something like the Oakland A's of the 70 and win 3 world titles in a row I'd have to take that Oakland in the 70s we got a lot of calls for you Kurt So let's try to get through all Bucky go ahead and. Iraq I mean. Yeah we are eager to get a little bit of a cold Well I just want to I want to have a question but I think my only got a good friend of probably has and I got up and I was walking to get married I was like what what's your question Bucky because Ronald Reagan is I was asked this question What is the significance of the how up on top of the things going to from I don't think way back I was in his organization but something went with that question. I don't know maybe going back to the day the county Mac. I don't know what they are up and stood for but the A's in Philadelphia that I would put as a symbol and he went on to Kansas City and then on to Oakland and that's all I know about it but it goes way back to the days when Connie Mack owned the team and managed to do is 80 OK And then later that man mentioned Bobby Sands the best fielding pitcher I ever saw Go ahead Greg you're in Houston Texas Peter Kurt I want to find out if you ever have thought of updating your boot camp with the mike was funny I wrote that book. Or will I have to get when around 160. Published by Doubleday sports books of those they were much and they didn't give as much promotion but it still did pretty well and it's funny you ask because right now I'm about ready to write a book which is going to be about sports in America says World War 2 and the history of sports and television together and it makes quite a story because of that T.V. Right now I think half the clubs in the market would be broke but you wouldn't have all these big salaries now because as in pay the salaries television basis and the players know with that with the television they leagues of the teams and so they're going to get part of the pie but deadly sports and T.V. Go together and since World War 2 I've been doing it and that's what my book is going to be about Jerry we only have about a minute go ahead and St Louis Yeah I remember as a kid growing up and know what's in all the great through between the wholesome the and the solar was running the kirk remembers. Sure I remember that it was it was a little as I. Said Hagan there straight away in this. The Hawks were good to see if they had Bill Russell they'd win the World Championship instead of the settlers Russell was a difference but that was I think the 2 best teams a pro basketball that Ryan San Francisco. In the sagacity I think you create and I want to thank you for all the good memories. Based. On under our greatest players in the 3 major points and a 2nd question was How can we get in touch with the right. Greatest player I saw baseball I saw him in his prime with Willie Mays. Joe Di Maggio what I came up 49 isn't bad days but I can see where he had been great when he bays was the best player I saw baseball. I don't know what you want a defensive player off as a player just pick one just pick as the stuff. I don't know about basketball basketball take the wrestle occurred thank you very much for the courtesy I know you've got a bad call but I want to have a call the next day I have my unit my you show and there's growing and growing and the next time I talk you can have more stations you'll be moving on well thank you very much it's been a labor of love just like you talked about at the very beginning Curt take care of yourself and we'll talk to you very shortly I will write back well take a break come back on the other side continue across the country and around the world with you on America's sports talk show.
