Night right here on the voice of the foothills am not in 50. Then after the hour now on the j.v. Show Jennifer Horan is here Kara Schilling is here we wish Victoria well on her trip to Ireland she's having fun it would look you look at the Facebook stuff all the social media posting and she's having a great time so let's enjoy our time together coming up a very special hour with a very special friend Jennifer and I believe in a nod Jennifer and I have friends and you believe that well rain more hard to believe for you I'm not a friendly Thank you I 1st though trending things what are you posting what are we posting what's been posted that we got to bring people up to date on well I think the top trending story today is that this tweet from Donald Trump against Kim Jong own Kim Jong Il And on New Year's Eve decided to say happy new year to the whole world by threatening to blow it all up and also mentioning that he'd like to perform in the Olympics so Donald Trump said Well North Korean leader Kim Jong un just stated that the nuclear button is on his desk at all times will someone from his depleted and food starve regime please for him that I too have a nuclear button but it's much bigger and more powerful than his and my button works so that's been getting a lot of attention people saying that Donald Trump shouldn't be going Kim Jong un I though do you think that it's absolutely the right thing to do this guy's a bully he's trying to pretend he's on stable and I think having someone give it right back to a woman is what's needed right now all right her you go in your face body in your face when I was anything else that you think is on topic yeah it's cold a Apparently there's some take huge go cycling of snow coming to the east coast subzero chills in the Deep South Charleston. Where it's like beachy balmy weather is even closing at their doors on their schools for the day because of this storm that's expected to be really fast moving through Florida through northern Florida up the southern coast and into Washington d.c. Headed for your area too and Massachusetts bites. By tomorrow won't be I know you see that it's on the West Coast like Mark guy that you are concerned about everybody says they all tease me because whenever there's a storm they always tell when the storms are coming because I'm leaving and that is true I just don't there's nothing about this that is threatening and I know that I'm very fortunate have lots to be thankful for and one of the things is that my 2 children live in an area that I find very desirable because the weather is pleasant most of the time and they have gone to Antarctica just think I'm not miserable you what about now what you guys are all worried about the cold at what's trending in Southern California where Fred and I lived it we we're dealing with very dry conditions it's been a very mild winter or seventy's eighty's even in Southern California and so now a lot of the environmentalist out here are saying we had rain last year now we're headed back into a cycle of drought again speaking in general just referred to freight who's for we don't have a friend we have a Richards here from time to time we got to Jennifer we got to Victoria and I care who the heck is Fred ladies and gentlemen I said we would have a an hour with a distinguished guest and so and I don't do this very often but because I have spent some time with Fred Dryer over the past couple of weeks and gotten to like him quite a bit find him to be very energetic compelling fellow has a lot of the same philosophies of life that I do we're both the same age so and because he and Jennifer work together every day Fred is a component at the c.r.m. Networks here I did it all as a program which he hosts and it's a sports related rather I don't know if it's really a sports related thing I said Well it raises politics and that sort of thing John Frederick Dreier Welcome to the j.v. Show so we're much hear your great cheer. We're literally for you but it's not a Jennifer exe used again never this time are you an early morning person generally . Every morning right so we get to have a little bit earlier for those of you who are not washed Fred Dryer one of the most successful football players in the history of the n.f.l. And also after his career as a successful and f.l. Player he decided you want to be an actor it went well I think you 1st thought you might want to be an opera singer but I didn't like that. That that was I realized almost immediately that I shouldn't be too. Good for you so self-aware if you. Yeah so anyway he's a Californian he's like you Jennifer came through all of the things the California kids come through when did you 1st start playing football at what age did you put a football in your hand for the 1st time. 'd I started playing the senior high school. Which was that was the only year I played which was my senior year I school so from that came a good college career and from that came playing with see the Giants the Patriots sort of and the Rams you know really play yes yes of course it's only also I was there from. 72 for about 3 months and then they when they traded me back out there like yeah all right so you played football what position where you most comfortable is you play different positions or you're always in the same position I was always the folks who aren't always and so What talent do you need when you look at the people who are playing today do they have the same talent the you did. Oh yeah sure yeah absolutely the. Today 'd guys are certainly. Quite qualified. But they had you do different things you know the defenses and lost. Today are different because they changed in engineer the rules to give you a specific outcome which meant. They wanted to be a passing league so they penalize you on defense in terms of coverage and then they signed defensive and allow outside linebackers different types of a pass coverages every once in awhile so we never had that. One where I was in the lead it was a it was a run 1st pass 2nd lead run 1st pass 2nd Yeah primarily the National Football League used to be. You know you had the great running backs you know Jim Brown and. The o.j. Simpson's and all of the really dynamic running backs that was your priority everybody every team had to have a great quarterback and a great running back and certainly you know a great sense of wind but but today you know running backs you know. As covered. In the league certain teams covered Dallas covered Eliot because they primarily use him in their office but most of the time nowadays it's it's just the ball is snapped the quarterback in 2 seconds the ball is out and the field. So there's a whole different philosophy of playing Fred Dryer not only a great football player but also has become a synonym is with action television shows and movies you'll remember that he was the star of Hunter in the eighty's and the ninety's yes that's who we have Fred Dryer was Hunter I thought for some reason or other I thought you were a lieutenant I thought that recount or was a lieutenant but I'm looking at the c.v. Here and you were a sergeant did you ever get promoted to be a lieutenant Well I don't think so. I think to state 'd a sergeant I want to stay out in the field. There's a lot of. Paperwork you know yeah I know I can't throw people off of buildings when you're all right and it just doesn't look right Fred Dryer as Hunter threw more people off the roofs of buildings than any other actor in the history of action television right but yeah it was such a great way that you know you need all the way to get rid of back you know you had you know you had these arguments with the networks all the time of I wanted to shoot it because he deserved it and the network says well I'm shot too many people are a threat you know a lot. So I throw him off the roof perfect was on the up night so Jennifer tell us the story of Fred becoming a radio host because we've got him as a football player we got him as an actor so how did he become a radio host dosh we'd have to go back in time and spread surprise say that story better than I would but what I will tell you is that it was Ritz been really fun watching the development of the fragile radio show which you can pick up on radio stations throughout the country can find it on c.r. And there's a whole list on our website c.n.n. Talk dot com But what was really cool is we started the show with more of a political slant but as you found split politics is very. Negative really really easy to get kind of caught up in all of the mud in the muck that is happening in politics right now and so as we started to evolve the show we realized hey maybe we come up with this unique brag with Fred and Fred sent an amazing job talking about the politics of the sport so this isn't a sports show that you're going to tune in and you're going to hear that the Lakers scored x. Amount of points Segoline up against the Cavaliers this is going to be a show that tells you about why sports are set up the way they are why the game is played in a certain way what the outcomes of the games really mean and it's much less about some of the I don't want to column like juvenile sports shows where you're just going to get the scores and you're going to talk about fantasy football but this is about the deeper story behind some of the games that are being played and of course all the major leagues in in the country is that pretty accurate Fred yes very good . I get extra points this issue do Mike Horn who is my friend Jennifer's father and he and Fred have become great friends that's how I got together and Ok Like saw that there was something there and I love my tell his story about how he met he saw a friend the restaurant and he just walked over to him said Hey Fred you want to be on the radio and Fred said Ok. Has pretty much that easier my telling is it too simple I was a pretty was that easy Fred. No I didn't know who he was to but you know came over and said. Remember I said yeah I'll be right over. That a shell and then I on my way out I walked over to the table with Michael's lawyer that. At that time I said what my son was built from so. We just started talking about stuff and yes what a lot of you know talk radio you want to know I was going to risk. Being part of a sports show and I said I said I'll tell you what else too. At that moment time I was pretty full up with politics. In this country and just be wilderness like I think most people are and how stupid the stupidity. Of People generally think Fred. That is but the stupidity the raging stupidity of the lack of common sense and character that are in these people and you know I'm out here in California with Jerry Brown who has destroyed the country you know and. So I said I'd be interested in doing some like I'm talking to you so we had a we did a show for serval years on the on politics just like Rush Limbaugh in the you know Mark with venom and all these guys and it got to the point where I was so angry and so depressed every day that I did the right I can't do it anymore I don't want to do it so we switched it. 2 of the politics of sports and what was what's interesting is this is how many people. Take for granted what is going on in the world of sports and and so we screwed into that for a while and we found ourselves having an awful lot of. Lightning a lot of people all right so I want to continue this and we'll pause for a couple of moments here I want to talk to you about. The firing of Rodriguez the Arizona coach as we continue on to talk about this movie that you're starring in called Highway 395 you can check out Fred's website Fred Dryer dot co as Fred Dryer dot co Fred Dryer the sports star and television a movie star here on the d j v show $21.00 after the hour. Steffen carry controls in our studio in Washington and we don't get off the wheel very often most of the time this program is about issues that are fun to talk about the ladies who are on with me have all these different perspectives Jennifer's here normally in Victoria who's on vacation and Kara but every once in a while I meet up with someone or find somebody that I think is really worth our time and is a character and he is a character actor he's a character in his own right but he's a character actor and it was a very accomplished football player Fred Dryer who starred in the t.v. Show hunter and you have many other shows and movies to your credit How did you get into the whole business of acting from sports Was it easy because people are watching you as a football player you're out in front of tens of thousands of people every week so do you think about that you ever think about who's watching. Well not so much. You know well you know you can when you're playing football you can actually eyeball the people that are listening. But or throwing things at you one of the 2. I got hit I got hit in the head in New Orleans coming out of the locker room onto the field in real Sugar Bowl in New Orleans you had to come out. Of the bleachers you know. And the guy was an old guy out there you just you didn't really know what has value was he had one thing and that was to tell people the players put your home. Put your home with make sure you're home and so on when you go out of the broader room on to the field and I found out why as I got underneath the police years I got it right in the head with the Jack Speer ball. You know I'm a guy on a lot of me and I had my helmet off. And it was one of the perks of the business where is he I'm already are you getting like you are because he uses drunk in front stuff yeah it was like it was about 10 o'clock in the morning to 1 o'clock game and 10. $1010.00 or no I actually it was it was close to a kicking the kicking teams went out of noon which is an hour before the game so it was it was for that by that time just I was so drunk it was. Well I mean this guy was way out of it and nobody. You know we 'd all laughed. Fred Dryer as a football player then you weren't necessarily aware of all of the focus on helmets and head injuries and that sort of thing is they are now what's your view of the focus on how to protect the people who are playing what they're signing up for when they sign their contracts the n.f.l. All that sort of thing which is part by the way for those of you who are just joining us I met Fred met Fred actually at Jennifer's dad's house 3 or 4 times but we never really engaged in much more then superficial conversation I think you and I and Shatner had a conversation out in his backyard by the pool the last time I was there and I have it was a focus on you and he were talking about something that you had done together a member what it was but you know we didn't blow him like a Long Beach tramp 3 you know we were we were drivers and celebrity race on Saturdays before the big race on Sunday I was out and I was Ok I had you know I don't know we were time were driving and I was in much I was sort of listening more than participating and because you neither of you really knew who I was so I just found the conversation interesting but then on Christmas Eve when we were both at Jennifer's dad's house for a Christmas Eve celebration we actually got into a conversation which pretty much occupied both of us through the whole evening and there's a couple of pictures of us. With everybody else was this was girls and you and I were talking about. There are times when we were criticized because we wouldn't sing the care of the 2 of us sit on the couch and Jennifer was busy snapping pictures of us and posting them online taking shots at us because we would sing the Chris. So I sang couple of and then back to the conversation anyway Fred has his own Web site Fred Dryer dot co not com But Coke Fred Dryer dot co I said why don't you have dot com tell on the reason that you don't have dot com So I contacted the guy that had a dot com And I said look I need that back as well I don't I've got a bunch of different and yours is one of them and I like it. There are a lot of people who did this they went around on the 1st all of this stuff was being created by 1520 years ago they take famous people's names in and create a web address and then they'd if you wanted them they'd extort thousands of dollars out of people who wanted to have you know they wanted I have I as a matter of fact I ran into it when I was trying to I had half a dozen different radio shows that I wanted to make sure we had a web address for and they'd all been taken somebody's listening to me put all of them together so all they did was add show they would people say to me why isn't a d.j. V dot com because this guy he took d.j. V. Show and he took d.j. B. Dot com He took good day Health dot com American family farmer dot com here hidden power all the things that I do so I just added show to all of them and that's why we have the web address is the same as you say you came up with dot co I don't even know that you could do that I probably would have done that what did how did you discover you could do that I don't know how I did it you know like. Some friends have. Expertise in all this stuff and. I was told if you don't get dot com People will never know 'd who you are never find you in your life what about or don't know does not. Or you can't do when you got to have Dr. Dot com I said I don't think that's necessarily true so as time went on you know they've got all kinds of Web sites. If you use let people know what it is get a hold of exactly Fred Dryer dot com All right so what do you think as a sports fan the radio show that you do every week that turned on lot of radio stations and c r n digital the Wildcats fired Rick Rodriguez 6 seasons he was involved in sexual harassment allegations right oh I didn't know that I mean who is it but 'd I mean Rodriguez who was a pair of these been there he's had quite a bit of success so how much attention do you pay to college football versus professional football these days well I like college football it's 'd short and snappy and it doesn't have all of the just peculations 'd and niceness has not flowered in that sport. And it's you know what is there a danger do you think Fred of these sorts of things we were I think you and I start time of basketball and we were together and these college teams these athletes who seem to be pros they're treated as pros March Madness is crazy time is it too much is there too much focus in college sports on what you can do for the school in terms of raising money that kind of stuff and not the sport. Well sure yeah I mean the college sports basketball you know football and you know those are the 2 big money makers and and and you know that the there's a lot of people who think I think and I'm probably coming around to it but there's a lot of people think that you know these athletes you know that are given a free education terms of you know scholarships to play sports but the same time you know you know there's there's someone you know they're going to see. These kids jerseys in the student store and they're going to market them and they're to do everything they can you know to make money off of them whether they're still under scholarship so so I think the n.c. To a which is which is a real interesting governing body that that puts a stranglehold right I've always called it the I call professional football government football. Because it is the rules and regulations that are being clamped down at almost every level of organized sports televised is just preposterous and and there and there's no reason why you know you shouldn't alter it amend the the relationship the athlete has with school. Let's talk about your acting career the kinds of things that you have done that you like to do you've been producing movies for n.b.c. After the you had a good relationship with the fellow who was running in d.c. For a long time he saw something in you and even though the show that you were in the hunters show was one of those that was done by Stephen Jay I never I had him on my program a number of times and I never pronounced Cannell not Canelo right yeah yeah so what was he kind of a guy was he found you for Hunter and so you work with him for however many years in the eighty's in the ninety's he produced Rockford and all these other shows that were basically the same kind of thing was it was that an easy gig or a tough gig it was doing that kind of episodic television every week how did you fare. 1st of all Steve was the was. Was to be admired you know he was a self-made guy and father was. The candle in chief and he was a. Bunch of printer in the furniture business here he had a store on Wilshire Boulevard Beverly Hills I used to know that the I mean. That was in the press for business and and then Steve a broke away one of the be a writer and and worked diligently at it and and and sold some scripts and then went to went to work for Roy Huggins over at the Universal when they were doing Rockford Files. So he got his bones on Rockford Files and then when the individual producing sold some scripts he actually saved A.B.C.'s bacon. By coming up with a show called The 18. And and so that show was a ratings winner and really began to help Steve. Scripts to all networks and one of the networks they place a script over called honey or was was our t.v. Show and we did a from 84 to 91 and and Steve was a centrist 'd in guy I had my or team a great deal and. He had a he had a really interesting talent he used to tell me get up at 3 in the morning kind of like you know. Get up a 3 in the morning and and and he would write an entire script you know in a couple hours wow at the talent and a half per year and it really is the man he was a real prolific guy that way and he didn't go off on this boat and come up with ideas and then and then call he would call you from the bridge of his. His boat actually a ship but he had this huge yacht that he would that he would be out in the Baltic Sea somewhere and typing out scripts and you get these ideas 'd and then call the networks and say I'm sending over a script and by the time he got back to l.a. He have a no show on the air you know into production we got a couple of minutes left I want to talk about how you maturity you've done a lot of these things now on your own you've produced action shows in and been another one has this highway 395 to feature film that you can actually see if you go to Fred's Web site Fred Dryer dot com Do you have to downlink it how does that work when you go there you will see the trailer if you can use a trailer and then you can download the actual movie so are you what is your character and how we 395-3055 the way the real highway in California well it goes from San Diego actually from the border down to San Diego all the way north to the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains from the hatch appears to the south all the way north all the way up to Washington and this thing is a huge of thoroughfare and in that 'd it's it's to the east of. The mountain range of that is and to the west of the the Nevada state line so of my character all the way the sentinel of the highway as it where is the police's all of those as areas in there and and they are in fact one of the most dangerous parts of California because that's where a lot of Stalins. Because they can they can get away from a law that is. No law enforcement. Highway 395 downloadable at Fred Dryer dot co and you continue to work you're in shows all the time you still like acting you still enjoy I can tell by your body when I was talking about they used to like and I do I I I was I don't want to get radio 'd. The music from Mad Max Now Chuck Currier movie man with movie news today and the focus on Mel Gibson who was the star of the 1st Mad Max is how many Mad Max movies have there been actually this before he's been the star of 3 after you know him and the reason we discuss this Mel Gibson turns 62 years old today but when met Mad Max came out like a 79 and it was directed by George Miller an Australian director great director movie we shot in Australia and gets into the Australian accent was so thick in 1079 that when the movie was released here in the states his voice was dubbed over so people could understand what he was saying really yeah I did not know that you know he worked on it with the acting coaches as to how to get rid of the accent I guess he. Worked on it and got his dialect a lot obviously a lot better road warrior which is the 2nd installment in the Mad Max franchise really made him an international star then back this big but the Road Warrior was enormous and then he did Thunderdome Tina Turner was in that movie so mad max and then Tom Audi saw the last installment fury row which got the great critical buzz last year with it or show us their own and then for him it would seem but you look at these things they're just crazy movies his I think I'm a surprise I thought he was old and that frankly he looks so much older he's been a big smoker all of his life he looks at me sounds it and you wonder if thing when when daddy's home to came out here to spoke for a very well at the box office Gibson has a supporting role and yet on playing the father of a small Goldberg when I was when I read reviews it is you know I'm just laying it out there I'm not endorsing Mel Gibson is. As a person people that think whatever they want but so many people you know still really do hate Mel Gibson some of them are and we say you know you never work again yeah and I'm sure a lot of people industry feel that way also now having said that I believe from a creative point of view I thought him excellent both in front and behind the camera I think he's just he's he's got a sense of his authority he played I saw him walking around the 1st 20 minutes of that movie was shot in Framingham and between the home that they were in and before they went on the rig cation in the school where the action brings Mark Wahlberg's character and then him all of them to a school that they took over on a Sunday to do the shooting there Gibson was very approachable. Lithgow wandered around a shopping center that was down the street and they had a great time just targeted people they appeared the 2 of them appeared to be having a good time with each other doing this is well so you can I think you can tell in the movie whether people are actually having a good to add if you can last 3 Yeah right exactly and that's what I read is a very good chance that we're going to see if that lethal weapon will what we will get from Danny Glover and director Richard Donner which I hope because I love that the fun yep yep I more movie news in a moment with trucker here I go presents unhelpful home improvement how to use overhanging trees present a real danger during high winds falling branches can damage roofs and windows So today I'll show you how to protect your home by wrapping it in bubble packaging all you need is a staple gun and 142000 feet of bubble packaging Let's get started. You could try to protect your home with bubble taxes or you could get coverage for personal property damage through the Geico Insurance Agency called Geico and see how affordable homeowner's insurance can be shocker in terms of new year's resolutions . People getting off the couch and not staying home to watch Netflix or some of the other Amazon wherever it is and they people watch at home there's something about going to the big screen that can't be duplicated I don't know whether maybe because younger people have grown up looking at these smaller screens but I have resolved to spend more time going to the movies because I like going to the movies and looking for good stuff and I'm going to call him art house movies and I just think they're 2nd tier movies sometimes that are better than the stuff I don't want to see too many more car crashes or the c.g.i. Stuff I want to see some stories to tell you know important to important aspects of people. Along with that no I don't think so I mean I think you know a sizeable segment that sees more adult credits at the time here you get a late December January all the what they call Osco bait comes out and there's a slew of the stuff getting theaters they obviously don't make the money I don't think that they used to do years ago in theaters it would Jodie Foster said in an audit we have got a lot of publicity to talk about I think fairly accurate in terms of Hollywood no doubt is going bigger and bigger that's not necessarily a bad thing I like a lot of the big general staff but like you I also like the serious story driven movies also which I think. We need more of you look at Daisy Ridley Emma Watson Gallagher women are the story in films I think for 20 if you or someone you know lives with epilepsy be aware of an uncommon but fatal complication called sudden unexpected death an Apple also known as Sudan the American Academy of Neurology and the American epilepsy society have released a new medical guideline to help patients families and caregivers better understand sudep and its risk factors if you have that perhaps it is important that you talk with your neurologist to learn more about Sudan is it.
