The early days of electronic journalism did appear to be fair and balanced however there was also a creation of the news start that put individual reporters into power positions when they gained enough audience to make large sums of advertising revenue for their stations and their networks some that come to mind are Edward r. Murrow water Cronkite Chet Huntley and David Brinkley to name a few today it's hard to name anyone in the networks because they rise and fall very quickly and there's so many of them unfortunately we can name a couple but because they have been knocked down from the power due to personal indiscretions like Bill O'Reilly and Matt Lauer one nice change that is occurring locally is many hometown newspapers are returning to basics and concentrating on the local population they serve the Auburn Journal recently announced a cutback of additions per week and more emphasis on the happenings and people that live in the local area that they serve this is the newspaper that I remember growing up when my local paper would report on the newest Eagle Scout in town the passing of local residents new babies born at the local hospital and local personalities that were serving the community or the world making it a better place I was told this week that the Auburn Journal would not be printing any national news just concentrating on the local area this seems to be somewhat of a trend now in the rural areas where the larger city papers are cutting their staffs are losing advertisers many papers are gun because there was not enough money to keep them all in operation the switch from ink and paper to electronic web pages is well underway and maybe one day be the only distribution of information from the press room to you and me via our cell phones. As we talked about last week and over Thanksgiving this is really a wonderful time of the year attended the country Christmas adding last Saturday in Old Town Auburn this tradition dates back to the early gold rush days in the mid 1000 hundreds with the entire town opening the Christmas season with fun food dancing music Santa and just good old visiting stores opened as did restaurants bars coffee shops and the outdoor displays of local artists and other vendors also a yearly favorite home cooked clam chowder served by our fire department in the old fire house in the old town several 100 local residents came out with their jackets earmuffs boots and sweaters scarves as they mingled visited and sampled the goods the foods the coffee and stuff there were several fireplaces burning with wood that put a warm glow over the streets and great bands filled the air with Johnny Cash song as in Christmas carols it all happens again this Saturday in Old Town starts at 5 pm and last until 9 o'clock it's a good time this program is heard here on k.
