Plea to bring us together well said I remember where I was that night game aired by the way on tape all right country that's it for this week's show thanks so much for joining us we'll see you again next Sunday with our Bobby Hurley's special project I bought. To see featured presentation. It's unbelievable to be here. After all the band there to be all of the violence make its mission and. It all imaginary. Really is What he's gone through so far is. He said to me. The way I look at. My life. It was. The Middle. Athletic family. My brother was actually a heck of a soccer player and we had battles in the backyard but now on good fun. swept through the passenger compartment Dr Hatch would suffer severe burns. He threw Austin out of the planet he tried to get the others out and I was the. One where the Burns came from. So. He saved us that's what he did. What happened after that. I don't really don't want to get into that. Austin's mother is sister and his brother would not serve on. My father and I would often go to go to the gravesite. He would just hug me. 2 tell me how much he loved me now thankful he was still have me. Now and said the exact same thing. What happened when you would ask why did I survive. To be completely honest I don't think he knew the answer to that question you. Press on. As a recall to do. The National Transportation Safety Board would attribute the accident to pilot error Dr Hatch would dispute that finding he returned to work and a flying plane as he had since 1907. There was just Austin and his father and the game they both love. The best therapy we had was just being together spend long hours in the driveway always always make time to play. And let me tell you nothing felt better the trash talk that would go back and forth between us and. They were always very close they just I don't know how to describe they merged they were best friends definitely very obvious when you were around him just how strong that relationship was. Soon there would be a new source of love and support in 2000 for Dr Hatch myth Kimberly Neal single mother of 3 Brittany Rhea and in Austin of her own. Numbers being put by her bed. Set in. Their house and they called. In May 2005 and was in the wedding party. Even in Kim where Mary. The mother son bond is important and I had lost that for some time. And she came in . Into My Life and. She actually adopted me and I called her mom. To this blended family Dr Hatch brought a new kind of love and security meanwhile his older sisters brought Austin into their heart we got to spend some time together and he shared with me about his life prior to us and ever since then. He was like so sweet even my brother said that his heart was big enough to accept that says a lot about him. They knew too that his passion lay on the basketball court. Crazy how they had to collaborate in like a kind of rag on a lie and. By the time he was a sophomore at Canterbury school Austin was a stoner for Coach Dan. Austin really did have weaknesses to be. He do body you want to do we could put him on the perimeter at 66 was tough to guard but what he did real well was he was smart put it on the floor and get into the basket he was just on a different level than everyone else we gave him the ball and it was kind of all right here it goes and you can really stop it. And didn't begin getting attention from colleges like the one his father cheered for one his late mother Julie had graduated from Michigan. From an early age I was taught to believe Maize and Blue the Michigan my mom and I shared as well as the bond between me and my other family members was strong. Austin was kind of a throwback player really I. Was tough and his teams won one night in February of 2011 coach beeline was there to see Austin play. And said they're watching this game. And watching this young man just take this team apart. Maybe the best game I ever seen really play he had 30 and 16 rebounds and I mean we had to have everyone I knew I was going to offer him a scholarship the moment I walked out of that gym he called me about 145 in the afternoon on June 15th and said I love love to have you he says I can accept right now and I. Know you're sure your wife sleep on this no I want to go to Michigan I just knew this was a dream for him to play here. There was a party at a local restaurant that night to celebrate. The line often says you know it kind of . Guy And I think I could fill in that office pretty well for you know I've. Got. A good time together talking about you know the games that we're he was going to be playing in the next few years we were all celebrating I mean so loud. Everybody's does or as an apology there is a part where it was almost like a little kid excited about it. That's the biggest question how do you fix. The biggest. So how do we fix the. Governing Body. Even need to have. A question. And you hear people say all the time well you know they don't have the. $1000000000.00. Industry do you want most of the sentiment Fashola down the front steps right now. On the speech app. For a Will Cain free if you tweets Roy snail What did you do that caused Bill Polian to dislike you so much just being nice Hold on just one second here John Polian hates Than hench was 8 years old. When he survived a plane crash that claimed the lives of his mother and his siblings. By the time Austin's was a high school sophomore except that a scholarship offer to play college basketball at the University of Michigan a special moment for Austin and his fun. With my dad and our best friends and just make him happy made me happy. All the long hours and a long days that were spent to get me there for me in that position it was a great feeling. 9 days later June 24th 2011 Dr hatched decided to fly with his wife Kim and Austin to their Michigan cabin. The plane left for way at 5 30 pm. Dad weather forced Dr had to divert to an airport in Charleville a Michigan. 720 he was clear Dillon. Yeah we just had an aircraft crash just north of the airfield that should be on the street just north of the airfield. Just to the left of. My God And there was a coming into their part of my now trying to come in but he was coming in the wrong way. Breaking news out of Charlotte County look. Only one place to get the information I need to tell it like that is. Screaming on the perilous. He said mom and dad we're in a plane crash and they're gone. I kept trying to cough and he's not answering. And these are kind of Sumeria. We don't think you're going to get all the time that we put in making your new family. How much I loved my dad. He knew was never going to going to back. The thing that made sweet sweet parent where God in. My next step was to get to Austin in the mood to talk to him or we heard he was in a coma that he was severely injured to his brain and that he might never wake up and even if he did that same I never walk again or might never talk again. But I know. That but night vision premium capsules are of the time dollars off a pair they provide some of the best nighttime illumination of any headlamp But if you can't see how good of a deal that is that it's time you did something to clear up that you like getting up a night vision premium capsules for of the 10 bucks off quality parts helpful people that happen no no no protests a fading up all the parts stores public spires 331 and 2. For 6 weeks Austin lay in a medically induced coma by July his condition it stabilized but he remained largely unresponsive. He was in a wheelchair and you couldn't stand and his head was supported it and couldn't control movement I couldn't believe that he survived for this you've got to be kidding. Maria would share with her brother what had happened to their parents. He woke up and he said Where's Mom and Dad and he kept telling any to call mom and make sure she's Ok And as a look at him and he said Maria today and I just took my hand yeah and he said I'm so sorry and gave me a hug and then he was. Out of. Most of life to realize that you've lost your job. But that means. Losing a father who is not only your dad but is also your best friend and then going through a loss a 2nd time. Not cost off to myself. Are to have my last forgive me for asking this you angry at your father never ever ever ever. Ever ever he was as far as far as I'm concerned. Steve hatch my father was. Was a man of the millennium. Dream had been to see his son at Michigan on the tee. It was Austin's goal to. Add basketball on my future and I realized how much work I was going to take for me to get there. Within the 1st few weeks he just kept improving. And. He said to me you know I'm going to play bass well again End of story. The last time that I saw him you're watching a guy running in Duncan and you know that now you're watching young man that has trouble putting one foot in front of the other. And now. You can it's very sobering very sober. For more than a year he continued to read him back home in Fort Wayne with his sister Maria and his guardian then for his senior year Austin moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to live with his uncle Mike brought him to Layla high school and coach Jamal Adams . The whole goal really was to get away from from the tragedy to survive and really put myself in a position to be a successful mission as possible. To train Austin Rasheed has a good rehab Kobe Bryant the year before was brought in by coach Adams. With words he always recall he literally asked me Do you want to be a part of a miracle. The 1st thing I said to him was we're not preparing to play basketball at Loyola high school we're preparing for the University of Michigan and Giambi line. There's been a lot of morons in the gym. 5536 am in work and. Frost in the not everything was about doing things with the proper mechanics and executing them the same way every time and if there was one difference we did it again. Who gave me the mindset you know what I can play and you know that that I that I do deserve to have the opportunity to play 1st of all I missed again. He had this spirit about him that he could do anything and he really believed it and I believed in him. And that belief would lead to a moment of unexpected glory. By the time he was a high school senior Austin had survived 2 plane crashes that claimed the lives of the members including his. Critically injured in the 2nd crash he had endured 2 and a half years. In the hopes of returning once more to the basketball court. There was days where he didn't want to get up at 5 in the morning but he always did he never made an excuse he was there every day and he was always 10 minutes early. He was at Loyola High School in Los Angeles played in a game in nearly 3. He was like I just don't feel comfortable and I was determined to make sure when he felt like it was right there on the uniform. And to participate fully that we were going to let them do that. Then on January 8th 2014 Loyola got out to a big league I went down there set off this opportunity get it is today today and he was I coached on the go test my wife on the knee and I said look look who's going in the game and I pulled out my i Pad and started filming it. Became this thing that just things clicked for him he was getting stronger he took a leadership position it was just the way that he could just channel of energy maybe even aggressive energy in a pot the new way and really tempting it's high school team for to you. In 1988 big landed on Cal's rugby team one of the best in the country you know was a 6 foot 4 guys. And he ran well balanced you could tell that he was a pretty solid athlete we want to be a championship in $991.00 and then out of the winner's circle for a couple years so it felt really good. To him his willingness to dive into adventure and to defend what he loved beyond the rugby pitch as he did senior year during the Cal Stanford football game the Stanford tree mascot decided to come over and talk to us in front of the student section just came over and started doing a little dance and were waiting that was that was the straw that broke Mark's back and so he announced his buddies we're going to go down there. And he goes right after the tree and just tackles a big fabric goes flying then he looks up and notice the police are descending upon him and then Mark says best way to get away from the police was around after Stanford. And that didn't work too well for a while. And champion rugby player with a core of bigamous public identity but there was another part of him he kept hidden for most of his life even from his mother. Mark had invited me to Cal so that we could spend the day together and he said. I promised myself I would tell you something before the sun went down. He launches this long explanation of why and then I just turned to words. And then he started up and this long description again I was silent I mean. I was pretty shocked I think Mark says that it might be tough for me to. There because I've been so. Anti-gay most of my life now my son my most beloved person in the whole world is telling me this gay and I knew that I had to come to grips with it and change and I did. Coming up on at the future we just got a report and that there's been some sort of explosion at the World Trade Center in New York City. I heard the phone rang and I heard Mark's chorus I just want to tell you I love you there are 3 guys on board who have taken over the plane and they say they have a bomb that in 93 but even I got to have the very. Edge and I think they think that you understand a threat pressure from other people that there was a problem. And here's a. Wilkie. Stern on e.s.p.n. Radio and e.s.p.n. . Well I don't want to go and I'm already. Morphing him had made his name as a national champion rugby player for Cal as a student the son of a friend but the other part of his identity he kept secret for most of his life Marc and I were roommates and we went out to lunch one day and he said. You know there's something I said I was going to tell you and then I'm feeling like Ok this is strange marks acting really nervous it's not kind of like him what's going on and he goes. Well. I'm gay and my brilliant response was when did this happen it's just the 1st thing that came out of my mouth because I had never thought that Mark was gay he was actually really really afraid of what his friends were going to think that we might not accept him and that was one of the only things I remember him really being afraid of. Only out to those closest to him graduated from Cal in 1903 and devoted himself to work and traveling the world. In the years that followed there was still no way to merge 2 identities gay man and rugby player. While playing on club sides in San Francisco he heard about a different kind of team just forming one that was predominantly gay the fire. In the closet as rugby player until he tried to fog it was really a sort of a 2nd coming out that a life the life the 2 are separate is that separation was painful and we started practice he felt that his 2 worlds were becoming one. In 2000 the fog became a member of the Northern California rugby union just a 2nd inclusive rugby team to be officially recognised in the United States. Mark was site just symbolized the fact that we were both gay friendly that we were a real rugby team it was a real milestone for him so you got it it's like. Our sole purpose is to change the world but we can do so by playing good rugby and we are changing people's minds one of the time to accept us for. And the plan well. As begins rugby life group so did the public relations firm he founded as he looked to expand to the east coast now I am a big part of the concern from. The us he started travelling back and forth in the late ninety's. Considered opening an office in New York and he did. That's what he was doing on the morning of September 11th 2001 he was coming back from New York to San Francisco. We just entering in that there's been some sort of explosion at the World Trade Center in New York City. All right that. Looks like a 2nd plane I just saw another plane coming in from the side both trade towers have now been hit there is chaos here. But within the space of 17 minutes that morning 2 hijacked airliners were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City at that time Mark Bingham was aboard his own flight United Flight 93 which had also been hijacked United 93 Cleveland. And I think restricted you understand the transmission or whether there was a bomb or. I heard the phone ring and I heard marks boy said Mom this is Mark. Using his last name. I just want to tell you I love you there are 3 guys on board taken over the plane and they say they have a bomb United $93.00. In a. Car you believe. Mark I believe it. Who are those. Judges are you oh my sworn enemy. Sportstalk and entertainments exports at this point to reverse course and I'll buy the time the call ended near 9 45 am Eastern time with the twin towers ablaze and the Pentagon hit it was clear America was under attack by family and friends uncertain where Bingham was desperately tried to reach an Iraqi 44 American African-American man where you call me a place. Where. I have heard the news I make sure that you're Ok. There's a car to clean out a couple of 101 and I are Alice called her son back on his cell phone at 9 54 am and left a message Farkas your mommy The news is that it's been hijacked by terrorists they are planning to sue is the plane and the target the time tight on the ground if you can try to overpower these guys if you can how lucky. He was quite a leader he could galvanize people into action and make a run on that cockpit and get those those killers out of the cockpit United 93 if you've got information that he's down down yes why did you land and I didn't he did not land me down. When we knew that Mark was on one of the flights that went down into that was one plane did make the target and. We knew what kind of person he was and I think we all. Had and claim that we knew what he would have tried to do without question and indeed it's what he did with with others on that plane. And I think it's a perfect expression of who was a teenager and who he was as our. Courting to the 911 Commission report for passengers on United 93 stormed the cockpit forcing a struggle inside causing the plane to crash into a field in Shanksville Pennsylvania preventing it from reaching its target the United States Capitol Building in Washington d.c. . Todd Beamer. Tom Burnett. Jeremy Glick. And Mark Bingham. Were those passengers. Was 31 years old. It gives me a lot of strength and comfort to know they died fighting I hope that they were so involved in saving the lives of the people on the airplane that they lost track of the fact that their lives were slipping away. When you're the oldest it's on t.v. Series the series called I Just. Want to reset. On the Cal campus more than a 1000 mourners family friends and some of those he saved gathered to honor him I didn't know marking him that I wish I had I may very well own my life to Mark and the others who some more enormous courage and love necessary to. A form in their terrible triumph. He died trying to protect himself and other people on this plane with this team of guys and he's again it just kind of makes you a fool to think that you can be part of a team courageous and strong get stuff done. I also just think it probably gave people more courage to come out. Most people before that couldn't have imagined that there would be a strong powerful gay rugby player that would get up and basically kill the terrorists and crash the plane and save save the capital so I think it transformed a lot of people's thinking I know. A lot of us who have struggled with being against specially you know many years ago it wasn't that easy and seeing someone that was a hero made it easier. Coming up at the Featured I learned today that. They want to. Be. One of the most touching parts of. Maher thing of this mother at the top is to hear the stories of the young men who have gravitated to the Bingham Cup and to game. And to Mark memory. How do you open. Handling doubts Adam Silver the n.b.a. Commissioner reminded Mike reminded all 30 teams that tanking quote has no place in our game in a memo sent last week to explain the league's 6 figure find of Mavericks owner Mark Cuban again the wording of the memo I think is very key and it says when and if we ever receive evidence that players or coaches attempt to blah blah blah the integrity of the game but it's players and coaches when tanking is not players and coaches tanking is management the players they give the coach to put on the court that's the issue here so I don't know how Adam Silver will address that because tanking has been going on for a while it's going to continue to go on so how are how is he going to discipline teams when you figure out if management trading away top scorers teams are sitting because of management saying sitting there better players coming to the end of the season which is tank. You know as Adam Silver going to be able to step in in those situations. To. Show. He was mad about it I don't. Care. If you're. In this industry do you want more from big lemme Basho. On the c.n.n. App. From Will Cain for you a few tweets Royce Mayo What did you do to cause Bill Polian to dislike you so much Well. The killer. Mark but his life had more moments than 31 years could count. But he was just 31 when he died aboard United Flight 93 as it crashed in a Pennsylvania field on September 11th 2001. It was the final moments of his life which would lay the foundation for is like a city market something we knew it like anything we've ever known in our life Mark did something Mark was involved if you had any sense that something was going great is a drill instructor. When it comes to training lean mean fighting machines she doesn't mess around can give me great basketball when it comes to getting a mortgage credit as less confident I got nothing fortunately for Grad rocket mortgage my Quicken Loans It's simple so she can understand that she gels and know she's getting the right mortgage Rockit mortgage buy Quicken Loans apply simply understand fully mortgage confidently go to Rockit mortgage dot com today he wasn't under license in all 50 states and less consumer access that working with 33. So did that little group of men with him on condemned Flight 93 and as for that ability to rise above his fears and fight anyway I think we owe them a great debt. What lives beyond. Their own lineup I got a phone call I think it was the early 2200 said we're getting together to have a rugby match in March they mean we'd like you to come there was a goal to make it. And to pull skills which is. The little golden gate park so it was unlike any return. Any amateur tournaments ever seen. At the time there were 7 inclusive rugby teams in the world every team came to play at the end Bingham state to find them the 1st thing I'm. Watching. Him on today. That gives me great pride. That's the 1st and then you will see him because. They think he knew we're hearing about another club has started in Tennessee or another club that started in Europe in another club started in Australia and then it was like next year there's 12 next year very similar but. There's a reserve against the others in the margins are. A little bit. 14 years later with the Nashville lit in rainbow colors this is what the Bingham Cup has become to play the same thing come you know will the Jews believe this whole movement around a massive experience I'm privileged to go to but this is. The No. More than 1100 players gay and straight the largest inclusive rugby tournament in the world I was. Just going to give you. All. About. One of the most touching parts of. Mark Bingham mother at the top is to hear the stories of young. Gravitated to the cup and. And to Mark's memory. Is the image for what it means for a game and to play an aggressive sport like rugby story help me become people coming out and being an openly gay man I think this is his legacy he was brave enough to start. Brave enough on that plane to the terrorists. After 3 days in May and it all is trillion fine. Defeated the Sydney to take home their 1st big. Bang and count 2006. And a very we're in. Charge of. 15 years later what lives beyond more. Lives he saved of course but also the lives changed. People who did not have a role model. They saw themselves. Which. Was Many difference labels and. It was the guise of sports he played rugby. Or the rugby. I'm so touched and honored that Mark. What he says to me to. Thank you for watching the featured.
