Well not only do they call him the French Prince obviously the Dodgers also almost got a pitcher from San Francisco named Will Smith Will Smith the Dodger rules when there's a catcher they could have had a battery of Will Smith pitching. And you know that Will Smith the actor would have shown up for that one probably do you remember when the Dodgers had the the Asian player who what they had an Asian player on 1st and when he. The 1st time he made it to 1st base Vin Scully goes I've been waiting for. Her and. You know also the good line of there was a player who played under one name because he came from the Dominican and he took somebody else papers you know however that was Fabio and then changed his name later on and Vince said there is the proverbial player to be named later. 2 wrote it was port's name this morning there's so much going on here Jill will be back on Monday I'm always happy to be in for my my pal my long time that right Jill she's not a staycation this is a staycation this is this is a kind of well deserved rest restore and come back strong a friend of my hit me up yesterday and said Jill's on vacation she's tweeting like every 20 minutes I mean John McCain She was not a vacation is every 15 minutes so there's all kinds of drama going on out of the l.a. Times have you seen this know what's going on l a Times executive editor norm Perlstein sent an urgent memo to the newsroom on Monday and it's being described by c.n.n. As a punch to the God to many of the reporters who received it quote We had hoped to double digital subscription this year to 300000 Pearlstein said. In past tense by the way he revealed of the 1st half of the year had been disappointing quote While we added 52000 digital subscriptions you said significant cancellations during the same stretch left us with a net increase of only 13000 medication or redesigned their website to be hideous So get this this is a really awful number so right now the paper only has about 170000 subscribers which is a fraction of the New York Times Wall Street Journal and Washington Post Pearlstein is memo encapsulated the buy that so many print newsrooms are in according to c.n.n. Almost everyone accepts that print is going going gone and the digital subscriptions are the smartest path to survival but the path is poorly led and booby trapped and littered with corpses rank and file staffers don't know what they should be doing to help convert readers to subscribers and that's one of the reasons the memo rankled reporters. Well that's the times we live in and the l.a. Times we live in. Print Unfortunately for those of us who grew up on print that's a thing of the past like a street car conductor it's going away the papers are still important New York Times is important Washington Post the Washington Wall Street Journal the l.a. Times they still have about a 1000000 readers every day that's a lot but it's changing it's an aging audience younger generation just isn't buying a newspaper period what do you do if people are reading your paper but they're not subscribers I'm a subscriber to the l a times as much I'm a pang subscriber of the digital l a Times Well there you go Randi you lead me to copy and steal their story to my shout so we have the you know we have the 3 generations going your Because you are a subscriber to the paper yes you are a digital subscriber and I get mine carved on a wall and a cake. To get it 7 days a week delivered to Casa de Edwards. 5 days a thing Ok get this Sunday and like Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday something like that I only get it on Sunday but I have a digital subscription to your round well by getting in on Sunday you have a digital isn't that the way it works Yes Ok they require you to get it on Sunday if you're going to get the digital That's why I swear I can only put it this way. I get. I want to support print I get my information from print about point 002 percent and that's about it it's all digital off and you have the paper in your hand and you're still looking at your phone Oh completely Well 1st of all the story on the phone is no more than the one in the paper. Right that's part of the problem Ok I mean the news moves so fast that everything that's printed is yesterday's news well how about magazines that's last month's news if you're a news junkie you know used to be a news junkie used to say you know radio talk shows I read 7 newspapers cover the cover of everybody's lying about that I reach 32 newspapers every day cover to cover and now you just don't you don't all the information is there right here in your hand in your phone and you can go to a 1000000 sources and the way to monetize that make it equal and fair has not been discovered yet Ok so I have this theory of what newspapers should do you know if you're a radio station you pay a subscription service to one service and you can play essentially any song you have the right right go to b.m.i. ASCAP Yes you can play any song you want and you don't have to pay a fee every time you play an individual song right you just pay $1.00 flat fee and that's it why not do that for newspapers too and I say that because a lot of people get their news from aggregate sites but you go to drudge road Real Clear Politics you go to the Twitter or whatever or Facebook and different stories are linked you know but I'm not going to subscribe to The Baltimore Sun because there's a story in The Baltimore Sun that I want to read that day course not because it's a once in a blue moon sort of thing then if you go to the Baltimore Sun you find out they give you like 2 stories and then the paywall comes up and then what you got to do is copy and paste that headline and find somebody else that has that story the you can get around the paywall or if you really have a good memory don't copy and paste just remember it and Google it. But I've read the l.a. Times every single day so it makes sense for me to have a subscription it does not make sense for me to subscribe the Baltimore Sun or the you know any of the other paper Philadelphia Inquirer Yeah but if you had one service that you could pay a fee to you know and get access to all of these papers and they would split the money up I think you could have yourself a pretty good situation I think sounds good I don't think it would work I think there are too many newspapers involved in the money coming in would be very very small do you think and what if you are the Albany Times Union though you're going to get something out of it if there's such a newspaper I may have made that up. I don't know but what they're doing now is not working you think it hurts the l a times that number one there's a major lack of anything close to resembling a newsstand anymore in Southern California hand the one thing that was kind of like a newsstand Starbucks they're not putting out papers anymore because they would get stolen and you know what I miss just gets bigger every day but also when I was in talk radio every few days you stop by the newsstand and you get an armful of stuff and you talk to the guy with the Newstead And you know it's like a good old movie that you're it and there's still that one at Laurel inventor and that's about it Laurel and Ventura was there was one there's what I'd Roberts and that Van Nuys and Ventura Boulevard I want to use to go to that was the one who got it Mike Walker used to tell me he'd go every day knew the guy because he wanted a New York Post right he wanted all the New York and east coast papers and he'd get it and that's how he started his day I would just tell you I'm a good representative this I get almost all my news and information I discussed yesterday my addiction to the stuff on the Internet I mean it's all digital for me and if it's all digital for me we've lost it you know it's over people like me who like print get it all for the digital stuff speaking digital news jobs report. Number of jobs report wasn't like a game show that told you every moment how the president was doing right was just a jobs report and now it's like the billboard that tells you how many people have died from smoking Yes well the jobs report all the experts were right on this one they were wrong last month and they were wrong the month before came in about $164000.00 jobs created which is pretty much on the mark which is it's Ok it's not great it's not bad it's not much of a story last month it was way over expectations correct way over the month before it's way under and what happens is and I know if you were crazy enough to do this but if you watch the business channels see n.p.c. Fox Business etc They treat it like the n.f.l. Draft. Then 2 segments leading up to it I think any predictions on what it's going to be and then finally the job prediction comes out there it is Did you ever have to do business news yet to some extent yeah no not just as a story within go yell a bit just as you get just business news just in general I believe the management was smarter than that. But my 1st job in broadcasting was as a writer for Franco tech really just the business news I say delegate Leslie got very good guy yes from Florida and used to work with Al Rantel in South Florida who's got that great voice of authority it's got a great broadcast voice in fact I think he was one of the ones doing the broadcast of the challenger is there and that whole situation happened you know the Challenger exploded I was doing am awesome to listen and we were waiting to go on and suddenly this thing is happening where we did the launch and we see something's wrong with the launch and on the show that day it was a weird group of people waiting standing together former New York Mayor Ed Koch was with us in the People's Court the Mayflower Madam was standing by and somebody else was there and it was the day my daughter my little daughter was with me and I turned to her and I said you know sweetheart this is going to be a day you will remember forever when I bring it up to her she doesn't remember. And one of the guest was annoyed because he or she couldn't get on yeah I came all the way here to be on the show I just get exploded you understand humanity is lost that day yeah but I came all the way from Placentia you know God Well it happened on my birthday it happened on January 20th born I was in kindergarten and it was one of these situations where we've been learning about all of the astronauts from the weeks leading up to the launch Yeah and so we had like literally all of these profiles of all the astronauts on the wall and they brought the t.v. And so we could all watch it in real time it was a school teacher astronaut that one Yes Ok and my teacher was this woman from India who used to wear these long flowing gallons and have all the jewelry and the get up at all that situation and so she put it on television we're all watching it and then all the sudden the long flowing robes goes in front of the t.v. Like a cape. And I remember one of the kids go what is that supposed to have. Broadcast and we were watching and they were saying basically is that supposed to happen yeah because they're describing and the launch and there it goes and there you see the Smithereens route surrounding. Should those things be there in the understanding was this was a terrible disaster happening at the very moment well this teacher had to become a crisis manager instantly so she turns the t.v. Off and she explains to us what we just saw and she's doing it in terms that kindergartners can understand but people are still having a difficult time grasping what hours people were screaming or yelling they were just confused right and after she explained to us that all of them were dead and that means space shuttle would never make it to outer space she said Is there any questions. And 5 year old John Green says please you weren't being a smart ass I raised my little more being a smart ass and I said does this mean I won't get my cake. Just in a random show continues here right now. If you see at this is the earliest in the show that I said you should be ashamed of yourself John you should say that is not true actually but the interesting thing is that 5 year old is still sitting here right that's right yeah here going back to the you know the problems with the l.a. Times how much of this has to do with content where the l.a. Times seems that their top story is almost never super local it today it's about a Baptist preacher that hates the gays and Trump was at a rally Meanwhile you go to the o.c. Register what's the top story 2 people got to a fight at the o.c. Fair and then let's go I don't think it matters I think the arrows pointing permanently down for print doesn't matter how good they are what the content is I believe I'm probably their last Republican subscriber to that paper let me just point out Republicans are out my front room various you know actually I do like to embarrass you but I sure won't p.r. You have a very successful print column your you you young man are a throwback. Daily News Riverside Press Enterprise the Long Beach Press Telegram Paddy the star and John who did you write about this week your love Marian Williams. There still is you there Steve Lopez who certainly has an impact on the l a times don't you think he does I would argue that what will keep newspapers alive are columnists and Sports Group because you can get national news international news that's more up to date than whatever your local paper can provide online however there's only one paper that carry Steve Lopez right there's only one paper that has enough money and enough interest to have in-depth coverage of every aspect of the Dodgers or the Lakers the Clippers and the game all right now listen as you can well imagine I do follow all that I read all that stuff yes on mine. And and when the paper comes I look at all these for Mill your store then I've already written tell you this when the Sunday paper comes the 1st thing I go to is the sports section because I know whether or not the Angels won or lost the night before but I want to know who's injured who are they thinking about trading for each their on line It's their it's their on line you know I like it my hands so to speak you know it's 620 we take a break in a moment like to get into a Donald Trump was in Cincinnati yesterday and he had some plumbing things to say about the state which we live so we do that now or take a break and do it let's take a break also why do you not subscribe to the l.a. And the Times doesn't pick up on stories that are you off until it sites like city watch and Mayor Sam expose story the reason why I think that the Times is on its last breath is that people do not trust it to report on local government specifically the city and county of l.a. The state of California and they look at the street and they see the corruption they seem to homelessness they see the bill they see the law as they see. The Newscycle chair is between course SETI and heard Weston and Mark Whitley Thomas and Janice Hahn and they say wait a minute these people keep their families employed for generations in local government jobs but the Times doesn't expose they're still years before always on every exit ramp and instead of every store box then it's white and the blaming it on customer service is nothing to do with Dan Then let me do 2 responses 1st we'll thank you for calling one of us you should run for office Ok No I'm serious you should run for office saying what you're saying the other point I make is as well said is that was I don't think those are the reasons why people don't reprint even people who trust the l a times don't read the l.a. Times as much as they used to I think so we wrap this call up with print is going to go away and you are going to run for mayor Dan. I love you guys and that's why we listen Ok. I think it was 2 cans of a string. That was that was going away Fred. And I by the way I think it's very sad I think newspapers were so important and whether you like it or not New York Times Washington Post Wall Street Journal they still have a big impact if you're not reading it the reflecting the people you're hearing from well whatever the New York Times would come down with some big story c.n.n. Would run with it immediately Yes And Fox would immediately be opposed so it's very important. Well you know if you're covering the right things that really speak to people they get big exposure I mean Steve Lopez's column when he finally decided to go off on the homeless right when Internet of course Daily Mail picked but didn't sell more print newspapers no that's really the question having here it's hard to translate clicks into subscriptions as soon as we started talking about clips about 15 years ago it was over a click click bait was a new thing and you know I've worked in this business for 13 years and there are radio stations that care more about clicks on a website than people listening to the damn radio I once said got a little bit of trouble for it I was on her I said By the way World War 3 has broken out in Europe we have an online. You know I have brought this up going on here with you before but I love the fact and there's a show in this I think you used to be the conservative position in all these liberal place of the hour Bobby the brain heated on you get at it and. Some of your best friends working that circuit are people on the other side of the fence yes in fact you spend more time with them because your debate as your reporter in the Green recently had the green room with Paul Begala and all these people and then you go on the air you bash each other's brains out that's right it's a little bit like. Boxing the best part of boxing even though it damages people's brains as 2 guys get in the ring 2 women now they try to kill each other and then they hug and shake hands at the end it's kind of like that isn't why you have to leave out the transgendered it's kind of like that isn't it. No cooking for him my friend Here's what Paul Begala had to say but and this is with Jake Tapper Ok by the way Covell Harris should have said some people need to be incarcerated she should have turned Tolson Gabbert and said Yes I raise bail on people who create gun violence because gun violence is epidemic this is my problem the whole 2 day debate is I believe many of these candidates seeking to win the nomination are setting themselves up to lose the presidency to Donald Trump Jake Tapper says by reading so far of the left Paul Begala Yes well it's the same thing that Rob Emanuel also sit on a.b.c. News you know let's make a simple point here that being tough on crime was a good thing for Democrats minutes ago I don't know if you remember long ago Bill Clinton was tough on crime Gray Davis in California Cory Booker when he was the very at that point famous mayor of Newark tough on crime that was a good thing how much of a vote getter is soft on crime that's not motivating me to hear that Paul there is a vote against you know there's a plank in the platform where soft on tried. To put on me have soft on crime or look at the California model we want to get everybody out of jail on crime but I would tell you what if I were advising a comma Let's say I would basically say listen when you attack Joe Biden Ok You attack in this way Joe you have honored us in your service to this country I have admired you my whole life part of the reason I'm even in public service is I've been inspired by you I just don't agree with you no but I still respect you will not help her oh no she's tearing his throat out you can still Terry is thrown out in a loving way look at you. Let's go ahead listen to told she gathered she's been trashed by the media ever since she started running for the presidency and I guess m.s.n. B.c. Has been one of the worst offenders and she has finally decided that she's had enough of it listen to this cut 2 you're talking about a meeting that took place what 3 years ago what I'm getting every time I have no every time I come back here on it says Bill see you know what you got to talk to me about these issues it sounds like their talking points that caught my eye Harris in her campaign not attacking you in Congress something because she's refusing to address the question about how many that were nicer for the American people to have context about your foreign policy issues and where you stand if you're leading with what I would like to provide that card that states a meeting with Bashar al Assad which I'm sure you understand is a very controversial meeting to take hence the reason why when you come on m.s.n. You see it is important for us to talk to you about the of course every anchor has a different perspective and different questions to ask of every single time for 3 years this is where the propaganda comes in because I've I've talked about this a lot for the last 3 years I like her more and more they love this woman you know sometimes voice is really important and her ability to stay calm but tough during that thing they're talking about by the way the fact that she had a meeting with Assad but she's not of the Saud supporter but she had a meeting with Assad and something you have to understand every time let's say you're a candidate and there are a couple issues and you're sick of them but every time you go to a new place they bring it up again because it's new to them right. Well they do it because they want to discredit her and by the way let me let me say that we have something unique here we have a Democrat railing against m s n b c This is a hole that she can run against the media she is in a in a weird sort of way the Ron Paul of this campaign she can't she's kind of an acceptable to Republican meet the slightly right of center people more so than other candidate while she's the only one up there talking about anti interventionism and that's a great thing and she has she has the street cred for that because she served in Iraq at Camp and a condo where the missiles are coming in at you she serves on the medical team so it gives her right to talk about I'll tell you what else has my Rajon as Joan the fact that she doesn't take any crap from anyone she doesn't take any crap from Kabul Harris she doesn't take any crap from the news media if you step out of line with her she's going to blow the whistle and I love that and the more they go after her like that and the more she counter attacks the more she gets on programs like this the bigger her fame I remind you always most Americans don't know who she is so this is all new stuff for them but here's the weird thing like you know you say most Americans don't know who she is 1st debate most Googled name and what happened Google deactivated her account because of that why because of that though they claimed oh it must be suspicious why would people be Googling healthy Gabbert is part of their communist plot right well they claimed it was the Russians yet they there are people on Twitter that hate her because she speaks differently than Qabalah Harris that say she's a Russian agent and the world in which we live it could be Russian bots pushing the numbers right I do think the news media is in the tank for comma. Yes Are we in the news media. We are the news media but we're an alternative media poll sort of the facts or maybe I'll tell you this I'm not a Joe Biden supporter but way that he's treated c.n.n. And m s n b c And by the big papers is appalling they are almost treating him like he's a Republican well it's not only that he's yesterday they're tired of him they've been covering him since 1902 there's nothing new there there's nothing exciting there and they're just straight up nasty to talk to get nasty Listen I know a lot of people media and the great majority of them if you were to look into their souls they're more liberal certainly than conservative a lot of people in media and certainly in journalism are liberal I don't know any of them who's pushing for a candidate. They're pushing for good news coverage exciting discovery local news is different the national news and the local news plays it straighter than the national news does if you watch your local news whether it's k.t.l.a. Channel to go down for whatever of course you're going to get a straighter version of what's going on in the world than if you watch the national you know Jill has always told you this because we were a fox morning show it good l.a. All those years in our glory years some people would assume because of the rise of Fox News network that we're marching to some kind of political orders out of New York or Washington and we never were we never heard about it but if you write about who's channel it would have been an issue of completely but people would make that mistake and they'd say when I come on your show because well most people are very bright. We can wrap it up there. And I get an image segment that I'm going to show right you know I'm going to blood test my drive. In 646 let's take a look at the Red John traffic update sponsored by Mercury insurance just saw the picture on the old State Freeway circle it wrapped up by the Broadway off ramp coming down into Boyle Heights they got that crash out of the 2 left lanes and in time that back up will begin to ease up coming off mostly of us out of the 5 The Spectator back up on the 5 northbound has you a very heavy coming up from the 710 I think a Cadillac car rear ended a big rig now on the Harbor Freeway south one town right by the Torrance Boulevard off ramp they may be holding the right lane there and to be reported in the carpool and left lanes 14 southbound at be a princess a in Santa Clarita you love saving money right of course you do $1.00 of the smarter ways you can save is by switching to Mercury insurance California drivers save an average of $769.00 with mercury get started with a frequent today of mercury Insurance dot com That's Mercury Insurance dot com next report at 7 o 3 I built Thomas a of a 7 i.v. Dot com. Right a. J. C. For the ever take. The one between the red. But. Take time out to. Nearly half of all the homeless people living in the streets in America have been to live in the state of California what they are doing. Saying to our beautiful California is a disgrace to country it's a shame. Looking at it look at Los Angeles with the tents and the horrible horrible disgusting conditions look at San Francisco look at some of your other cities and then you have a governor you have a governor that invites the whole world to come and take our phone you were paid for your health care were paid for and then you wonder why so many people are coming up there coming up because we're the hottest economic country in the world but they're also coming up because you have people like that governor say come on up we'll give you health care come who wouldn't come up. Who wouldn't come up how crazy is this How crazy is this schools health care today I have a simple proposal for Democrat leaders to support legislation to end illegal migration and we will use that their savings to rebuild our inner cities that's the way we should be doing well you know what is interesting was he saw my late uncle Lew. Kind of out that sound all the time who's going to see everything. And they want their money he makes a good point though and it could be an excellent campaign point and for works and that's this yeah a vote he never gets the intercity vote you don't just doesn't get that vote if he keeps playing this card Well we're spending all this money on people who come here illegally there are people I'm running against 2 who want them to have health care and health insurance and whatever else and meanwhile you are suffering in the inner city I want to take the money we're wasting there and I want to spend it on you that actually could have a little bit of daylight for him in those areas where he has no support what's the old saying the entire world hates United States the United States hates California and everyone in California hates Los Angeles and that's why he's just going straight to the epicenter that's what they say about talk radio or you know it starts with movies network television local television local talk radio. The people in Cincinnati really care about the yes because what happens here gets exported and I don't know who did which Democrat is going to end up running against but if I were Trump or I were advising Trump I would tell him to run against the state of California just say look at California run against the plastic straw ban in the plastic bag bad in the mobilises shoe and the disgusting traffic and the spread of disease and all of the craziness that's going on I think he's going to do that yeah I think it's going to it's a fact of when you hire. Bring on by the way. Do you think he'd listen to you he doesn't listen to anyone Ok he listens to himself yeah and you know what out of elected what do I always say Don't tell me what to do everything you told me to do was wrong I did it my way and that was a personal history the world by the way I think that's the if you're looking for the secret sauce of his success not listening to Republican consultants is at the top unless those people are horrific about Democratic consultants they're better than Republican consultants but not very good you know the consultant class well vote yes yeah and they give almost universally horrible advice to get rid of the consultant class Yes Should we make a law that everybody runs has to answer to themselves not to advisors and consultants they've already tried the 2nd that's the trump law they bleed you dry pasta fortune give you bad advice Leaks stories about you and then trash you when you lose if they knew how to win they'd be running for office Yes Ok but financial advisors if they knew everything there wouldn't be financial advisors that have too much money psychics a question a question for you John Yeah if his career ever goes away would you not be a consultant now you'd be pretty good no point 0 desire. I don't know. General take a test I wouldn't take advice from me to ever ever ever know if there's sometimes the make real sense it's the 1st it's at 638 you made sense and I think so since you made sense this morning if this thing goes away John's going to give away popcorn at the Angel game.
