The music Strong concert to benefit the borderline victims of those tickets I have Santana Doobie Brothers I also have our live show and I'll give you a chance to win tickets to all of those lots to talk about tonight I wanted to start out however with politics and we've been getting a lot of calls from folks and again lot of e-mails about people saying what about a 3rd party candidate you know we would love to lease consider that cannot happen and now you have Mr Schultz formerly of Starbucks out there saying I'm going to run as an independent you have Democrats going out of their mind saying it's just are you are you out of your mind you got Mr Pres in the d.n.c. Saying please if you considering running give us a look give us a look you may like some of the things we're doing instead new saying no I don't like the things you're doing kind of a little bit unrealistic so we speak with Dan Schnur professor at U.S.C.'s entered school of communications founder of the u.s.c. L.a. Times Paul and welcome to the show Dan how are you using 70 appreciate it you happy New Year we haven't talk yet this year but I'm sure we'll be talking a lot more today so you wrote a piece and it's interesting because you talk about the fact that most of us inhabit a space between the 40 yard lines and the Republican Party has gone further right we see that the Democratic Party is going further left and then you have all these guys kind of sticking their toe in the water a wealthy guy's Bloomberg Scholtz and what's happening now is he's taking shots at the Democrats are already kind of hurting themselves Bloomberg in a way but there is more of a thirst for a 3rd party candidate and you have more and more people registering as no party preference. That is wrong so what's going to happen is that a possibility a realistic possibility. I think it's a more realistic policy that is than it's been in many many years. There's an old saying in politics it is no such thing as a raging moderate and so the rising that the real energy in both parties comes from the party's base as conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats what what jolts and his advisors are saying is that as the 2 parties from who's moved further and further from the center there are more voters who might be willing to look for a more centrist alternative the challenge for Schultes is is twofold one the tea party system is set up specifically to deny an opportunity for ther alternative and can talk more about that and if you like but it's more immediate challenge is you have a Democratic Party that is so concerned consumed with anger and animosity toward Trump they're wary of anything that might potentially complicate their goal of defeating frump next November and they're worried that by splitting the do that by splitting the antitrust vote the childes makes a lot harder for a Democrat to get elected President Schultz himself believe that he'll pull roughly equal support from the 2 parties a little bit early to know what that's the case or not so it's I'm not a brilliant I'm not Mensa and you've got guys like Schultz who run big corporations and and did it on his own I mean this guy came from poverty you got numbers pretty smart guys why wouldn't they know this why wouldn't Schultz get this already that if you throw his hat into the ring that he's going to have then take sides problems in the Democratic Party. Well my guess is he knows that not only because he's very smart but as news reports show that he's already he's surrounding himself with rich smart people from both parties to help his campaign and I'd be really really surprised if they didn't tell him if you do this you're going to make some really fierce enemies and I think what to what Chelsea seems to have determined is that he doesn't builds who is a very very strong trump critic doesn't believe a Democratic candidate can be true and he's particularly concerned that a more left leaning Democratic nominee and Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders would elect Trump there's a school of thought. Among political observers to trump cannot win reelection but the Democrats can still find a way to lose that's what has chilled concerned and he wants to offer somewhat of a protection against a Democratic part of the field innovate they can't feed Trump more you want you know you watch what's going on and you think people these politicians are smart and I know that with the wall one instance incident in we had a government shutdown and then it reopened without a deal for the wall and what you hear is you see Palosi and Jim are smiling like we won and the the missed opportunity here is about the public you get in all of these negotiations that Hey over here you're for it you're forgetting about us nobody and by the way from one in part because people felt that they were not included in the power structure there was the feeling they were out of power and of each were running the government making decisions here and globally so we're upset we want we want some power and obviously there's anger because of that you would think people would be more aware and more sensitive to how to punish least play the game. Well he you with sticks so wouldn't you but I suspect if you play a game any game long enough it's awfully difficult to learn new rules. It's a name and it's shocking even what winning a game in Washington on either side over the years means that maybe you're paying a little bit less attention to the people outside of the beltway than used to and to endemic in both parties you made a great point Amanda go with Trump to brilliantly in 2016 and what Sanders tried to do for the Democrats is to is rally did channel all that voter frustration back out Washington. Schultz at least. Structurally is trying to do the same thing we don't know enough about him yet to know whether he can carry that message in as compelling a way is from did for his supporters and is interested for is what he's already doing is measuring things like constant Cortez and some of the things she's saying which are not realistic some of the things that others are saying not realistic and then you have Democrats pushing back so they are already there the guns are fired at each other and from Republican the Go on please keep out there dude do shows do more books keep talking because you're a great spokesman for knocking down all the the Progressive Party vote of the Democratic Party you're doing the work for us. Yeah Trump's 1st response to the prospect of a sold candidacy was come when it exactly I suspect as this goes he's going to become more and more welcoming and even if jolts has equally critical things to say about Trump as he has toward Cortez and some of the more liberal Democrats I guess is Trump is the smart enough to know that encouraging Scholtz rather than discouraging him is always potentially his long term interest but again like we said earlier she'll believes that he can just as many disaffected Republicans one 3rd of Republican registered voters say that they would be open to another nominee then trump that doesn't mean that they would vote for a 3rd party candidate but would Shelton his advisors believe if he can pull off disaffected voters from both parties I'm not saying it can't be done Peter it just hasn't been done it just hasn't been done in over a century talking to Dan Schnur Professor Yunus he's an American School of Communications and the founder of the us c l a Times poll so let me ask you about that polling so when people say they're open to that you know in advertising I did a lot of polling and focus groups and you find out not only if you be very careful in how you write a question because if you ferment or bias and you can lead somebody to an answer that you subliminally want or maybe not even sublimely want so when you're looking at polling and you see the polling that was so off in the last major election presidential election how do we know that the polling I mean you cited polling there how do we know that the people say they're open people say they'll buy chocolate surrounded by whatever and then they don't you know because they don't know the other choices they have that's a question it's a snapshot in time and all of a sudden other things come into play and your question is irrelevant. Well I think it I think you raise 2 really important points about polling their number one we don't know what you know Peter because you're smart enough to know when a lot of it and most of your listeners are too is you don't look at polls raw numbers you don't see who's got 52 and he's got 48 has at 55 he's got 45 what you do is you watch polls over time to watch the trends to watch the trajectories and a candidate report in issues is gaining support you might not know from the poll exactly how much support it as but you see a trend line going upward rather than going downward right now trumps trend line among Republicans has gone slightly downward but decades to your 2nd point this is a snapshot it is January of 2001 teen There are $91.00 weeks left in total the president you know discouraging thought and all sorts of. Just think about a one sided 91 we really don't get too depressed. But what but the low the last few government shutdowns have had a really strong short term impact on the poll numbers but those opinions haven't lasted over longer periods of time so those voters who are straying from Trump because of the shutdown long since forgotten the rise by large November the question is whether Howard Schultz or someone else can tell someone who might have peeled off now if there's another reason for them to peel off again in 21 short months. While there I mean you said a mouthful The other thing I wonder about because you're in the polling business too so the millenniums came out and the rock star was Bernie Sanders and he filling up stadiums and he's rocking them and they're excited and they're engaged and they find out their own party was behind the scenes playing them for fools you know they had it all in for Hillary what is that what do you what do your polling show you as far as those voters are those potential voters coming back now how many were poisoned by that or have they gotten over that at this point depending on who the next candidate is well the biggest shifts in the Democratic Party since 2016 is how far leftward it has moved Bernie Sanders is an ideological outlier when he ran against Hillary Clinton when he talked about Medicare for all when he talked about government the college when he talked about all sorts of criminal justice changes those positions are now mainstream in the Democratic presidential primary and calmly heiress in Elizabeth Warren and any number of candidates have taken that position so resentment toward the party hierarchy not aside the big shift there is the Democratic Party is following Bernie Sanders lead in fact it may have passed him in the prediction I will make to you is that Bernie Sanders is going to feel become somewhat frustrated over next several months wondering why the Democrats who are so excited about it 3 years ago have turned to study his even more left leaning While Well I think you're right but but as you get near the election doesn't always Isn't it always been in the past that you have to go toward the center to win. Generally speaking that's been the case that said Donald Trump in 26 teams did not he defeated he did he determined correctly that if he could get his strongest supporters sufficiently motivated he would not need to compromise so it's not over Dan is that is that theory done shot see later. I'd say it's it's not shot trip so that you didn't necessarily have to follow it Howard Schultz is arguing just the opposite that if you want to win you do need to center the challenge for Schultz is this and we talked about this a little bit earlier the 2 political to major political parties Republicans and Democrats aren't good at a lot of things but they're really good at protecting their duopoly and when a 3rd party or independent candidate shows up with an idea that they haven't considered they take it look back at Ross Perot way back in 1902 he ran on deficit reduction oh Bill Clinton got elected and started talking about reducing the deficit Newt Gingrich let the public and to control of Congress he started talking reducing the deficit by 1961 Perot ran again nobody cared because issues been stolen away from him the question we're going to have to watch for coming back to Howard Schultz is in addition to talking more broadly about an alternative What's his issue that neither Trump of the Democrats are talking about that every voters in 2 is very smart what it what is that thing by the way I don't trust him or the economy if you care to coffee for under 550 I'm really concerned aren't true. Bryson Thomas Harris is out now she says she threw the ring early against to get the upfront money before there were 720 other candidates in the ring but she's very vulnerable as far as being a prosecutor and I think you had pointed out also that she had a colleague Larry Wallace who taxpayers paid $400000.00 in harassment in retaliation settlement and she hasn't addressed that in light of the need to movement where she's making it a thing or even bringing it up in a big way well this is going to be a real challenge for heiresses that even though California is the largest state in the country when it comes to media coverage and scrutiny we're still the minor leagues and last December last month when it was announced when it was reported that one of Harris's top advisors had become embroiled in the sexual misconduct. Controversy. She is she answered the question of a fairly brusquely and not in much steps certain that showing the same kind of sympathy for the victim in her own office that she had for any number of other victims of sexual misconduct over the months and over the years and the point that I've tried to make is whether you happen to be a supporter of Harris or not when you get up to the Major Leagues you know to just come in faster. And be in she's going to need it she's lucky she had an excellent 1st week that's about as good a 1st week as a presidential candidate as you can hope for. But as we said a moment ago she only has to do that $91.00 more times the pitches are going to be coming faster and among her policy challenges she is going to face some tough for questioning on why the miss the Miss Conduct controversy in her own office is not worth the of the same kind of attention and support that is what she's talked about when she was when she was talking to Brett Kavanaugh he didn't you she knew before of our love to try and cram as much with him like the Eskimos use the whole animal . Was polling do you see anything jumping out at you that that in all the years you've been doing that's resonating that you that surprise you at this point that people are kind of telling you through the polls that they're moving a certain direction I mean we see the Democratic Party's moving left we know the Republican Party right but is there anything jump out lately in polling that's kind of interesting. Yet what's really interesting to me Peter and unite talked about this a couple of years ago. Shouldn't be surprising because it reflects historical trends for more than a century now whenever the United States is finished involvement in a foreign war right voters of the country turned inward whenever we faced ongoing economic difficulties the voters have said let's concentrate on what's had home 1st before we worry about the rest of the world. But the fact that we are stepping back from the rest of the world. Is somewhat surprising and it's one thing to see that in the industrial Midwest it's one thing to see it in the south but when you see it in a state like California whose economy depends so greatly I mean our national commerce the fact that voters are so suspicious of their political leaders that they are looking. To disengage from the rest of the world should necessarily be surprising but it's something worth paying attention to because as you know and you know I've talked about this before over that century when the u.s. Withdraws from its global responsibilities other people and other players step in and bad things happen and we do need to end reengaging militarily or otherwise so whether it's Donald Trump or his successor a leader who can remind the American people that we do have a responsibility to maintain peace maintain security in the world does resonate exactly with Again I'm over time but I got to ask you Garcetti I'm guessing the reason he announced he's not running is maybe the f.b.i. Is taking boxes on the city hall maybe the homeless count is happening maybe just those things are already big enough to go I don't think I want to spotlight Chinaman. You know I think that may be part of it I think it's something even a little bit more practical nobody knows his name. Kamel Harris announced for president and she gets a week of nation national breathless public attention. Starting out I will tell you from experience a 2 percent in the polls is not a lot of fun. My old my boss John McCain used to like to say I'm a 2 percent in the polls with 5 percent margin of error. I'm thinking they went around to state to state and said What do you think our guy sent in the cigar said in the said Guys good night nobody knows his name so you're right 2 percent there are if you're do end up being 152025 Dipetta candidates for president just getting noticed as well I got here although on that note I asked an expert I forget who it was looking at the Republican field last time you know running with the Trump and you're looking at people at a point 03 and I'm asking people in Washington how are they up on that stage thinking going to win and he said you know Washington people are deluded into thinking somehow the going to pop next week it's going to happen I couldn't get up on that stage if it was a number that low and yet they do work before before we call it off as if there's an old joke about a guy's nonsense or president realizes he's running just behind none of the above. School's l.a. U.s.d. What they're going to cut as far as administrative cuts Where's the strategic plan and how they can improve the performance. And what you can do about quality for teachers and tenure and promotions based on merit charter schools magnet schools what role will they have so lots of course and still be answered but it looks like right now they're going to head it's been somewhat resolved except for the money issues which they now have to get from the state and then figure out how to do the budgets which is the next plan but it's interesting and I want to get your take on this phone number 802225222 I read this a couple articles about Finland and why their schools are so good and why the students take it so seriously and it's really fascinating to this to become a teacher in Finland you have to 1st get accepted in one of only 8 prestigious teacher training universities you've got to have high test scores you have to good grades to get in and it's really competitive you have to read a bunch of books and then sit for a finish. Literature exam and only 20 percent of those who pass it are accepted it's so stringent how you become a teacher and what you have to do and they're more selective like along the order of mit we don't have that kind of testing over here we have hey I want to go into teaching but I think I want to be a gym teacher saw take like easy math courses and I'll take and it's not everybody so don't go crazy but you know how you get to be a teacher over here you're not going to mit type testing in the weeding people out and you can't get in so in Finland all education schools are selective and getting into a teacher training program. Has to be as prestigious is getting into medical school in the United States so in the rigor starts in the beginning not in doing teachers current career it's right in the beginning you have to prove yourself to them that you can make a stellar teacher you go for I think it's 6 years of training and more exams and then you have to be mentored like a master's program and then you go out and they watch you teach and they mentor you but they give you harsh criticism and like just like residence in hospitals or critique and again compare that to what what we do as far as teachers getting in to teach and is it is that as stringent I had math teachers had no idea what they're doing I had a guy in junior high school was a total idiot and I remember his big deal was he made us do a lot of work while he read and if anybody talked he threw in a racer at you and we all laughed because it puffed you know I mean when you hit it hit a kid's head and then he sent it out to the principal so you better be good in math and you better excel in math if you're taking this because you can be taking a lot of tests for that and you have to take Like I said advanced schooling. And then they watch you and they monitor you also over here it's funny they day compared with this gym teacher a guy who was going to school and wanted to be a teacher they have the x. Standardized teacher test which is like the s.a.t. The national average for the act couple years ago was 20.6 This guy got a 19 she can be below average. And still become a teacher based on the act testing so I was curious about what you thought to make it much more stringent make it harder to become a teacher make the process harder so we guarantee the people getting in really want to do it or is that not practical because we need a volume of teachers and we're not going to get it if you ask me ask for 2 people to be too good and too committed and again I'm not saying teachers out there are committed I'm just saying we have to do something to change the system and I just read a big big report that the Koch brothers on have started initiative they just did a 3 day get together which they do every year and they figure out what their platform is going to be well they're really happy with the platform they did in. Prison Reform Ok that was theirs I mean they were working on that forever and they took it to states that were more accepting of that and then they got to the White House and I put a lot of money enough effort and energy well the Koch brothers now and I think they had $300.00 donors there who are willing to spend I forget a lot of money each to start this initiative but they're not going for Kate k. Through 12 education is what they want to attack and they want to open it up to anybody anybody that is that has a solution that's smart to try it and a school is as an experiment within reason and they've got somebody I forget in the university we reached out to him today but he's travelling who's looking at all the different permutations and possibilities of what kind of schools would best serve our students today as I said we've got artificial intelligence right there replacing jobs in Europe they're preparing them students for that over here we are not preparing students for that we are way way behind so the Koch brothers in the next edition of They've raised a lot of money there's some suspicion about Altruria motives because the Koch brothers are known to be you know the right wing and that they have an agenda but they say you know what a lot of the stuff that we're investing in we also have George Soros is investing in leftwing. Yes of investing because everybody needs children to perform better we need the next generation to be smarter and better so and we're failing them so they're looking at initiatives in a big way and are going to spend a lot of money in next couple years and it may sneak up on you because it's not that obvious and they're not making that big of a point about it in the media but it's out there and it's beginning right now so they're going to impact schooling and they're going to do some some targeting of different states and schools that need it and see if they can get an analysis done and then prove through grades that they can improve student standing grades and maybe a school not area needs to be a Jewish school maybe it needs to be a Muslim school they're going to let the school decide what's best in that specific area to get to citizen free to know what they're doing and perform well so they have a shot as they grew up of advancement so I'll go fix it Ok am 70 k.p.c. Coming back to play some of Mr Schultz's comments and if you want to talk about that picking teachers making them jump through hoops so we know that the teachers are the best the best they can possibly be and then the stupid funny thing is this woman who did an article said I interviewed the students there I said why are you so serious about school I mean you do everything kids over here do but you're really serious about it and they looked at her like she was from Mars and said Well how else are we going to get ahead and get a good job and go ahead in the future and be viable so whole different deal over there I'm sure I'll hear from you why it's easier to do it in Finland but I'm looking at at school districts everywhere to see if there's a template we can follow art in 7 on a k b c. This is the situation thank God Ray Donovan is dead the only compelling characters in this series is Jon Voight not only because I like him personally but because he's actually got the screen presence to take over the show every time he appears it's become a slasher movie unfortunately the whole thing stinks it's dreck it's garbage most savage nation listen for free online on your favorite Bob guest promo Westwood One pub guest not bored. I'm sitting home on vacation which is really odd I've never had this long a time off Ok And as I said earlier today I'm going around Netflix's what 8000000 shows to find stuff so I have downloaded these shows and I'm watching them and it's this small Asian woman. Who comes into people's houses and shows him how to get rid of clutter and when his name is Marie condo and my wife goes How have you never heard of Marie condo she thinks is a bestselling book she changed my life that's how I got rid of clutter I'm thinking we have so much clutter in our house when she goes on vacation I throw out half the stuff in the garage and online said in touch anything she has a giant box that had pieces of wood in it little pieces of wood you know they were the 60 pieces of wood that my son broke when he was in karate at age 4 I looked like kindling So this woman comes in and I'm like I was was writing this down to make it a bit I'm laughing because she's saying here's how you get rid of your stuff you already make note of this because we're going to laugh at home with me because it sounds so stupid she says take your clothing out and take it all and dump it in the middle of the room as she does the same thing with your kitchen so I've got to dump it all of them and you've got to go through one piece by piece and you gotta hold up the clothing you're no longer keeping and say goodbye to it and the pieces that you keep you keep because you hold them up to you and you close your eyes and you see if the piece gives you joy and I'm going Oh this is as good as it gets this woman's as dumb as can be so I save everything I mean I've clothing from the eighty's you know jeans from that old jeans that I think to be vintage again shoes from you just don't throw stuff out and I realize I've got to get rid of stuff so after making fun of this program and having my wife tell me that it helped her and looking at Laurie in the other 8000000000 people who buy into this my wife's out of town I have time to get rid of stuff. And I'm sitting in my bedroom and I walk up to my closet and I go you know what I were a lot of stuff that doesn't that I don't clean it doesn't make you feel good like when you wear it it doesn't and I actually said the words to myself because I'm embarrassed to say I'm out loud and I'm saying to you I'm actually holding up pants last night at 1 30 in the morning holding them up going to these pants joy and I'm actually getting rid of stuff because I go this bags around my rear I just don't like it it never feels good you're joyless you Levis are joyless How dare you so I have now started to purge my closet using the Marie condo method of if it doesn't bring you joy get rid of it and you know what it actually is emotionally smart it actually makes sense. Since in the end the baby see. Him sitting on the t.v. She the winner tickets to the movies and Santana was in Santa Monica Congratulations Elliot have a wonderful time on us let's go to Bob in Sherman Oaks How you doing Bob Yes Hello Peter I missed the early part of Camelot Harris's town hall on c.n.n. Last night I would guess that you saw the thing you know what I didn't see it I taped it so don't tell me how it ends oh oh. Ok well here's is something that. Hopefully the stimulating subject for all your listeners Ok I might have pressure was the. Questions asked were almost irrelevant who did the interview or who did it who was the us Jake Tapper. Ok talk about race talk about equal opportunity and all that image sure that's important but the presidency is the toughest job in the world and you have to master a lot of different areas you have to master the economics of the United States' position in the world what about our debt what are we can do about China being our principal bondholder do we stay in Afghanistan look if you should've asked me who needs it Tapper it's you Bob. I know but here's the problem nobody invited me to ask. You and I you know and I got a bill out of Illinois 40 years ago because somebody just walked past me in the hall and said My family's back east and it's one below. Which is incredible and you know what it used to be going to station can mean your years ago who said we ruin it by showing the Rose Bowl parade every year because people go wait a minute we should come out here and whenever relatives and rest of the country say How's it out there you go it's hard man I'm being held up right now stay where you are it's hard don't come out horrifies been you know what I don't I don't know I watch it tonight and I'm curious to see the softball question if that's the case it's a shame because everybody should be as you know we yell and scream here on the show every night about the wall and I trying to talk about yeah immigration reform started asking these people about immigration reform and how they're really going to do it and how they're really going to attack it and what they're going to do about the lobbyists and all the big money that it took to get to the level you're at now and who you owe money to. Favors to because of that and how the system works and how you're really going to drain the swamp as to tough questions because guess what everybody says the same stuff just and go deeper and go deeper and deeper you know I don't know if that's what they want to do but they should and I can't believe she got it already that she got the she got the invite right away which is why she threw it in a ring and then you got Schultz is out there getting 60 Minutes right away because he's a billionaire who makes coffee we don't know if he has any good ideas but you know what I guess we'll find out pretty soon but thank you Sarah any time I have somebody in that I have to really take apart and go deep on I will call you Bob some pretty good questions I'm your man because honestly these are the things are going to cast the world for our children and grandchildren yes and no they all live because they don't have the capabilities Number One of doing everything they say they'll do but then you want to hold their feet to the fire on that because it's too important and we'll see we'll see we'll see where she goes again she can have a problem with her past as a prosecutor that's going to be enough of a problem that he asked about that by the way. As she alluded to that she alluded she said I'm tough about being tough on crime but you know these are the same one liners you know I mean you know one of the one of the issues that personally I'm concerned about is that people many people and she's well she's just part of the generation of things Oh anybody can be president as if anybody can be a neurosurgeon and not have a long residence you know look look we've had dynasty. Yes yes except when you look at it we have brothers and wives and you know who feel entitled to do that and then right now we have a guy from television I mean it's we're And then you got to a guy from from coffee so. Why wouldn't I think why wouldn't I think I mean the phrases and it remember growing up you heard anyone can grow up to be president or now it's anyone have to pick the best presidents historically not all but if you look at Teddy Roosevelt Franklin Roosevelt Harry Truman people that made a huge difference they came up the line they were Senators Congress was like a system secretary the lady maybe governors of New York just the right train well you know what the part of it is you have to know how to game is played and it's a tough dirty game and yes and if your entry level man they can run circles around you for a long time before you suddenly go Oh now I understand we thank you Bob I appreciate the call and I will watch that can I I'm glad you didn't ruin the ending am 700 k.b.
