And we've got tons to talk about this hour John Phillips is going to join us we've got tons to talk about with him a lack of sleep makes you useless at work I assume you've heard. You've heard the show so. Were our names mentioned in this research project by the way. Up there we go and Dr Dolly is going to be here because Queen Elizabeth's drinking habits somehow got published. Take that and the on the Russians and the on down the old gal likes the sauce she has for cocktails a day got to drink to be the queen of England and she's 91 yes oh and by the way Prince Philip just retired yesterday was his last official day is pretty awesome and he's 96 Yeah and my guess is he's going to be on the on his day so we've got all that to get into but we start with we start with of course the big dustup yesterday the president made his announcement and we we played that for yesterday that he's supporting the Senate bill. Senator Tom Cotton and Senator produce to roll back legal immigration to cut the number of green cards that America issues in half and to enforce the mandates which technically are part of the current immigration law that there be command of English for someone to emigrate to the country and this of course has started all kinds of new controversy forget about illegal immigration our talk about illegal immigration right well just a little background I have argued for over 20 years that our entire immigration system is broken that from top to bottom our immigration system doesn't work for the country because. If you talk to folks who have gone through the legal immigration system it takes years it's expensive byzantine process and then of course you've got all the people who cut the line America has issued a 1000000 approximately a 1000000 green cards a year every year for decades now consider those numbers that's like adding a major American city every year the population of Boston is about 890000. Now with suburbs it's much bigger but I'm talking about the city proper So it's like adding a city larger than Boston every year we're adding 10 Bostons to America every decade through legal immigration. And then you add the number of people who come in illegally and you can see the massive explosive growth that we've had. Of people coming into this country the vast majority of whom want to be here want to be Americans at all odds good commingled are some real trouble makers and it's a problem. Because the nature of work in America has changed when we used to have a system that was based on need especially when we were building and carving you know a nation out of out of a wilderness we needed a lot of laborers who could come in and they didn't have to have a high skill level there was work for everybody the nature of work has changed dramatically we're looking at how many stories have we done just in the last 3 weeks about robotics that are coming in and taking over jobs that were once menial tasks and we're going to see more and more and more of that So what should what kind of workers should we be bringing into the United States this is a legitimate conversation to have I have no idea what the number should be I don't know whether we need to cut it in half or should be 3 quarters of what the number should be but the idea that we just have anybody who can get here can get a green card comes in and then with family reunification brings in their relatives down the road I think is an obsolete model for the country and you're right that discussion needs to be had and it seems like when somebody opens up the discussion people just get angry right away well and they don't want to have the they don't even want to talk about you know they don't and they start quoting Emma Lazarus the poem from the Statue of Liberty and of course that's exactly where it went when White House aide adviser Stephen Miller was talking about this yesterday in cnn's Jim Acosta got into it with him the Statue of Liberty says Give me your tired your poor your huddled masses during retreat. Does it say anything about speaking English or being able to computer via computer program or. Aren't you trying to change what it means to be an immigrant coming into this country if if you're telling them. You have to speak English can't people learn how to speak English when they get here well 1st of all right now it's a requirement to be naturalized yet to speak English so the notion that speaking English want to be a part of immigration systems would be actually a very a historical Secondly I want to get off into a whole thing about history here but the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of Liberty Enlightening the World as a symbol of American liberty letting the world the poem that you're referring to that was added later is not actually part of the original statue of liberty but more fundamentally history but more fundamentally saying history not represent I'm saying that when the center is ocean a lot of them saying that you know she had to come into this house in the notion that I'm sorry no seriously you sound you really have to question sounds like some rugged National Park revisionism Ok I wish that Steven Miller and if we're going to have this argument and we're going to have this conversation and we should have this conversation I wish everybody would just put the cards on the table Stephen militias say yes we are really envisioning our immigration policy that's what we're doing because that's what they are doing it's a different day I mean let's stop her to don't try to spin it that it's really just a continuation we have done this in the past it was the alien Exclusion Act back in the 798 there was a we could essentially close the borders in the 1920 s. Specifically because of fears of Bolsheviks and and our kids coming into the country we banned Asians from coming in the. Chinese Exclusion Act after the transcontinental railroad was built we've done this in the past and modern liberalism of course looks at these moments in our history and looks at them and condemns them and it's a mixed bag historically speaking but we have. I've to go back to something fundamental nations have immigration policies for the benefit of the nation not for the immigrant now we want the people who emigrate to the United States to succeed because they're living here and if they're successful we 16 a rising tide lifts all boats in fact but you don't shape an immigration policy and no nation on earth does so you don't shape immigration policy for the benefit of the immigrants You bet you shape an immigration policy for the needs of the country we're not a charity work country and we have been and we should be and will continue to be a humanitarian beacon for the world we will continue to take in people from oppressed lands. On a humanitarian basis eccentrics cetera but we have to face the reality of the changing nature of work we do not need millions and millions and millions and millions of more low skilled workers because the nature of work itself is changing and there is a limit you can't just take everybody unlimited there's just no possible way and if there are legitimate needs of industries for low skilled workers and we find that we're not able to fill those positions down the road well that's what work visas for you can then hang out a shingle and say we are accepting people in these categories of work but getting a grip on this entire immigration process is necessary I have to say that there's and here's where there's a connection between border barrier whether it's a wall or a fence I don't care and the green card issue you can reform green cards all you want you can announce all the policies of immigration reform you want but if you don't have control of the border you're you're whistling in the dark because if you don't control the borders this. Matter what laws you pass because people are going to continue to bypass your controls so there's a linkage between these 2 issues. Jim Acosta didn't seem to understand that the c.n.n. Reporter or you know the president of the c.n.n. Debate team and here he is getting into it with Steven Miller over the issue of green cards Jim what the United States is going to see that you can see here also your statements also shockingly historical another perspective which is if you look at the history of immigration it's actually ebbed and flowed We've had periods of very large waves told by periods of less immigration and more immigration during the really we've had here immigration right now the u.s. Wants to go is actually want to get everybody sweeping change to surely James you don't actually think that a wall affects a green card policy you couldn't possibly believe that do you actually the notion that you actually think immigration is a historic law before World Population United States today with the give you Jim what do you on talking about how border crossings do you really want to research and you really at c.n.n. Not know the difference between green card poll see any legal immigration 08 I mean are you really don't know that well there is a linkage between the wall and green card policy because if you don't have a border wall your green card policy almost becomes a moot point but I understand what Stephen Miller was trying to explain to Jim Acosta it's the it's the lack of distinction that the mainstream media has between legal and illegal immigration and you can understand why because they eliminated the term illegal immigration I won't use it the headline they were raised in a news articles they just talk about immigration as I've said a 1000 times it's as if there's only drivers there's no such thing as a drunk driver the only category a we have is drivers. And it's not true they're not reporting its policy may can't cover the story they are so in the tank in the open borders side that they literally can't cover the story all right we're going to cover this story mentioned that for some reason Queen Elizabeth's cocktail hour which. Only as cocktail hours got reported and she's $91.00 and she's not going back according to Business Insider for cocktails a day a gin and do Benet with a slice a lemon I. Know that a glass of wine has got the gem flies dry gin martini from this lunch line measure and champagne before heading off to bed as speaking of head not to Champaign Dr Dalia doc to. Get I've only had 2 drinks myself. Just a little bit or. So now we get these reports periodically in the boozers always love to share these on Facebook any time any kind of Health report comes out that says moderate drinking is good for the you know whatever everybody shares it but of course the real bruises are moderate drinkers they're big drinkers but she's a tiny 91 year old woman and she's not going back for cocktails a day I know it I know it you know the Europeans they just know how to deal with their alcohol maybe it's because we're doing it wrong in America you know what does will do well Coke you know Jack and die you know well well me do a lot of spirits and mix soda with it or amaretto sour with a splash a soda and well put sugary Morris you know cherries in our drinks was who are having some gin there was a study that came out last month saying gin can increase metabolism and maybe wine gin and not mixing it with the sugary juices and soda pop is the way to go but whatever she's doing or oh you know whatever Betty White is to and I want to do a magnet of 95 years old and she was like all over the movie still I tell you something you know we really need to you know whole you know follow what are close to centenarians or Dylan I mean as long as we want to live that long and full of ever to be to a t. But I outgrew I think what it doesn't really help people live longer is for some it relaxes. It prevents them from doing other vices like she has one little piece of chocolate and one slice of cake Ok I can get through that you know before I even eat breakfast so maybe what the alcohol does you know in Europe is a prevent them from going and grab an ice cream sundae after dinner who knows Well according to The Independent the British newspaper The queen at 6 units of alcohol per day would technically make her a binge drinker by government standards. But they say that she eats a light dinner and follows a no starch rule if she's dining alone so she eats light but she knocks off a food or champagne before toddling off to bed. And do Binay Holy Moses I know I know of Benjamin Franklin. Was fake live that long but he liked his out of all I think he had at least 4 day well you know anybody that's what they had Winston Churchill was drunk almost his entire life he lived to be and I somehow got a picture though of the Queen Elizabeth not going back all the gin and taking the Rolls Royce and doing donuts on the lawn at Buckingham. Wason if he's it safe to save sees that old and she's been drinking and she's drinking 4 drinks a day now she's probably been doing that her whole life. Yes absolutely I mean this is you know when you when you interview these people in the news she's not sitting there in the hat but these people that live past 10010510 we ask what they do and they have a daily regimen the daily regimen is almost more important than the alcohol if they have their their regimin a diet bodies like predictability and so looks like the body knows how to handle it and here's the thing you know she has her dress doesn't mean she drinks the whole drink or does she order it she has a couple sips and puts it down so again we don't know if she's consuming the whole 6 units but but you know I want to be surprised if she's drinking more than the average American but maybe because it's so rhythmic predictable and consistent that the body seems to handle it you know better well I think I do think that after a while the body needs its daily made. In order to keep run it's like you can let the oil levels get 10 my pal Otherwise you burn up the engine what kind of grease the skids but I don't know I mean I as a doctor you wouldn't recommend this level of alcohol to somebody would you never never for women we don't want them drinking more than one a day and men more than 2 a day so that's a recommendation here but again it's because we in America we we do it differently you know and and you know there was a study that came out a couple weeks ago saying alcohol may prevent diabetes and you know a lot of doctors had issues medical you know it had issues with that study but I got to tell you some of my patients who are diabetic of low cholesterol ask them what their secret was and they said they have their wine every night and not to mess with that because that's what keeps them healthy so what I think it is is different strokes for different folks for some people alcohol works for others alcohol put them at risk for cancer for others alcohol put the members for heart disease and stroke but then for others likely Lisbeth it's just it's just right and listen if you had to live around with with her kids. We are going to talk later on today with the reporter for The Hollywood reporter who broke the Angeline mystery who is Angeline and can we carbon dater and find out how well she actually I'm telling she's older than 6 hex Let's go Welcome aboard John Phillips good morning Mr Philips how you good morning I think we have to cut the rope and count the ring. Him and just count those rings see what the drought years were like at the drive home every day with Jillian Barberie from 3 to 6 and of course John's column is in the o.c. Register and we'll talk about that in just a bit so John it is my belief and long held belief that the media the the traditional American media is actually incapable of covering immigration story they cannot cover the story they just don't know how to do it. Yeah in their mind you can't have a debate over immigration there's no such things in office to bait over how many people should be able at it or who should be let in or whether or not we should have a wall or we should actually follow through with it deporting people who overstay their visas to them it's one very simple question do you like accidents or do you hate Mexicans and that set in their minds and so if you if you believe the country should have an immigration policy if you believe the country should be able to enforce immigration laws then you are a defacto racist and it's just an dishonest argument well you know I've been talking about this issue for decades and the entire American immigration system needs an overhaul because the legal system of immigration is Byzantine people wait years and years and years it costs a fortune to go through the process and then on top of it it almost doesn't matter what you do in terms of reforming legal immigration if you don't have a border barrier and interior enforcement then people just bypass it anyway it's like you know what difference does it make if you you know it's like the fire department your house on fire and a fire department shows up and puts out 3 of the 5 rooms. You've got to deal with the entire issue so there is a component where the border barrier is connected to the green card bill but what's missing from this and what the media will never be able to Jim Acosta's the world will never be able to absorb is that the nature of work has changed in in the modern world in the digital era we simply do not need hundreds of thousands of people coming in every year with low skills to take jobs that don't exist as the technology is being rolled out to take over burger flipping jobs and they've got robotics that are that are putting boxes on the shelves of grocery stores there's technology for crop picking that's being rolled out we simply don't need categories of workers to do low skilled work in the same numbers we once did. Yeah that could lead to long term problems when a lot of these jobs are eliminated and replaced by technology if you look at what happened in China they took a lot of people lot of people in China lived in rural parts of the country and and they worked in the agricultural industry and they decided a certain point like the $990.00 s. That they were going to industrialize the entire country and the government because it's run by communists going to I don't know we don't want you to live here we want you to live there so they took a bunch of people from the rural parts of the country put them in the cities and said All right you're going to you're going to be a factory worker Well eventually there were countries that. Produce things a lot cheaper than China so a lot of these factories just lay people off so you have people that are needed for millions with their surroundings who now have no jobs and they're really angry there's a when you don't have that in California when we replace all the fruit pickers with machines what's going to happen California we will figure out ways to. Mechanize the poultry plaids and. You know dairy farms and everything else and all these people with those skills are out of work going to have a lot of really angry people there's a there's a brilliant documentary that was made a few years ago about the Chinese factory workers it's called The Last Train Home and I think it might have been an Academy Award nominee if it didn't win and it's well worth tracking down I think you'll find it on netflix one of those places but then the the quality of life is just miserable for the Chinese factory workers with that said the president has now raised this issue and I have no idea what the number of green cards should or shouldn't be but that's irrelevant the point is we should be having this debate and it's going to be very hard to have a measured conversation about public policy given that the media will simply frame it as a vote for or against racism. And that's what I said and they control the framing so that the debate right now and you know whenever you debate whatever you don't accept the premise of an argument you know my my attitude is. You know the Republicans that work on m s n b c and the Liberal work on Fox work because they accept the framing of the argument if you if you go in and you deny the premise that television so you have to accept it and then you can have the debate for for Republicans to argue liberals in the mainstream media on this point the oh most have to accept the framing of this argument that it's just a racist vote up or doubt and I just deny the promise of every possible level because they're just it's a disingenuous argument that they're using to try to paint us into a corner and I think that that. That Miller was on the something worth is a colossal haul that it's you know up until this point. Is why I call it professionals including people in the media had to worry about their jobs going to illegal alien or their jobs going to whatever Greg because it was all people at the bottom of the of the pyramid who had to compete with cheaper labor Well some gets his immigration policy through it's a merit based system then then maybe some of these people will have to compete at some point the future and I would love to see the arguments flipped on them and see their reaction Well one of the problems and it's been this way for decades is that nobody in with the bully pulpit has been willing or able willing in the case of George w. Bush or all the Republicans prior to George w. We certainly know the Democrats are going to make this argument or able in Trump's case to explain the policy clearly and dispassionately and it starts with this it starts with explaining relentlessly explaining that nations have immigration policy for the benefit of the nation not for the individual immigrants that we want people that we give green cards to to succeed because a rising tide lifts all boats but countries shape their immigration policy for the needs of the country and that's been totally forgotten over the decades where it's really just essentially a we've got to be nice and let people in who are having a hard time in some of the corner of the world and it's up to us to let them in and take care of them and that's it as if this is one gigantic charity program as opposed to looking at the needs and the future needs of a nation state and deciding how to best address those needs which is how every country sets its immigration policy for instance Germany allowed a lot of Turks and people from the Middle East into Germany. Why did they do that well they did it for 2 reasons they don't have Emma Lazarus his poem on the statue but they have the history of World War 2 and the horrific slaughter of the end of the death camps so they have a collective guilt but they also have something beyond a philosophical point they have an aging population and a low birth rate and a social welfare system that allows so many workers to retire at the age of 50 that they didn't have enough workers to do the jobs so then they didn't have enough babies being born to fill a position so they had to go outside the country to find them so they were still setting their immigration policy to the side of a liberal immigration policy based on the needs of the country and maybe that's what we'll do but in the meantime we've been allowing 1000000 people a year into the country every year decade after decade that's $10000000.00 a year legally Plus we literally don't know how many come in illegally because they're illegal so we don't know. Yeah well if the Germans could work past the ripe old age of 50 then maybe they would have to import house people from some from Turkey and other countries and it wouldn't be dealing with a lot of the problems they have right now. You know welfare states and open borders don't work you know if they preserve lots of problems that was always be there and you know again I move back to the technology argument what are the Germans going to do when a lot of the jobs that are being filled by the people are replaced by machines and suddenly you have a bunch of people that don't understand the culture that don't speak the language that have 0 interest in the customs of the of the country but are now living there and out of work and by the way not to be for disaster and John another component of the cultural issue and to try to divorce you see here is when you talk of a culture now all of a sudden that's that's a code word for the media that you're you see you're a you're a nationalist and you're racist oh trust me I made that argument on c.n.n. Last you all I MacIntyre respond all of my e-mail Yeah well you know that's how they respond to it but the reality is is that the process of assimilation that worked brilliantly in this country in previous ways of immigration when somebody got on the boat and came to across the Atlantic to America they largely weren't going back there were people by the way who didn't make it and returned home particularly Italian immigrants many Italian immigrants could make the cultural shift and returned but the overwhelming majority stayed and when they stayed if Mama and Papa never learned the language their kids inevitably did but there's a difference now and the difference is that with the digital age you can watch the shows in your native tongue that you grew up watching on your phone you can call the other side of the world via Skype for free you can watch your sports teams that you grew up. Without ever assimilating and I told the story of the year before and it was in the l.a. Daily News probably 12 years ago something like that and I thought this is the quintessential modern l.a. Story was a story about a Korean business owner who is in night school at one of the community colleges to learn Spanish because so many of his customers spoke Spanish and he wanted to learn Spanish which was a smart thing to do was a business owner to be able to do business better but here's the kicker he did not speak a word of English so you had a Korean immigrant in Los Angeles who is learning Spanish in order to do business but he doesn't speak English and that's the Tower of Babel that we've become There's nothing wrong in fact I wish it's one of my great. Really one of the I think great failings of my life a life time of many failings is that I don't I don't speak a 2nd language I wish that I was bilingual I wish that I had that language skill it's a beautiful thing but language is a unifying element and what we've got in l.a. U.s.d. For instance is 97 different languages a spoken last this Unified School District and it's working out for some time to turn Tower of Babel. You know look I told a story on the air yesterday. I grew up in Garden Grove California before my my parents split we moved to hysteria and you know Garden Grove was a city that when my dad bought there was one of this post for town that's where Robert and the Crystal Cathedral was and it was it was you know that type of it was a blue color but filled with homeowners part of that whole Orange County and after the Vietnamese War a lot of the refugees came and they they settled in Westminster and Garden Grove and so I was I was my mom's 1st kid so you know they were they took a very active role and you know taking the schools that I want to in those sorts of things and so she went down and she wanted to take a visit to the local elementary school before they had rolled by before they put me in school and she found out that something like 2 thirds of the kids would be in my class for e.s.l. Students so so I in the extreme minority of kids in this classroom that spoke English and she was she kind of observed the in the instruction that was going on there and she saw that there was absolutely no learning going on at all because all of the time especially for the kids they didn't speak English and the kids that spoke English were just sensually being babysat and they were missing out on everything that they needed to know to be prepared to move on to the next grade so they white about where we live till I could go to school in Fountain Valley and be around people who spoke English so that way I could learn all the stuff that I needed to know had she not done that I would receive an awful education you know I would have been so far behind everyone else and and when you start falling behind at that age you never really make it up and that's the experience of a lot of people in Southern California I mean do you want to talk about what screw the blacks over in you know South Los Angeles people think of areas like South l.a. And and Compton historically black areas is being you know black neighborhoods right now well no it's a lot of them. Neighborhoods are filled with new immigrants who don't speak English and you know black kids go to school with them and you know you have a lot of e.s.l. Students and those black students face the same problems that I will say said I don't that school we've discussed this and you know it's tough enough to learn a 2nd language but to learn a 2nd language in the specific language of math and science where you have terms like integers or plate tectonics you know these are not common words they're specific to the areas of study very very difficult and what's worse is that the folks who were concerned about their children's education your kid has a brief period of youth and those formative years and when parents pulled their kids out of public schools because of the language issue they were basically accused of being racists of being you know afraid of dark skinned people when it wasn't about that at all what was about was they wanted their kids to grow up in America they wanted their kids to grow up speaking English in a land that speaks English and have that shot of the future but what they were but they were branded as being you know some kind of Nazis for that the number one question of the number was not really a question it was just people screaming calling me names but the thing that they jumped on the most last night after a month c.n.n. Was that I said that you know people should come here and assimilate people should come here and speaking cause people should come here and Terry their own way and the response was why City anyone has to assimilate to American culture why should anyone have to speak English if they don't want to assimilate they don't want to speak English What's it to you.
