>> they are all seasoned travelers, so we hear. first hup is joshua fattal. they worked with him at a sustainable living center where they grow their own food. then there's shane bower, a student of many cultures, and sarah shourd describing herself as a teacher, activist and writer from california. >> the owner says he repeatedly warned them, hey, don't be hike ng that area. it's not safe for americans. what did that area? "harry potter" made 23$23.4 million. we have breaking stories this morning, and there are new details about a continental airlines jet that made an emergency landing about 5:30 a.m. eastern. now, it landed in miami. it was going from rio, supposed to go to houston. a fire department official was telling cnn that 26 people were hurt when the flight 128 hit severe turbulence, and four are in serious condition. the plane was on its way from rio to houston, texas. this is what you're looking at here, a piece of tape showing you an unusual way they got the injured passengers from the plane level down to ground level so they could wheel them over to the ambulance. did you see they were using a catering truck which has a lift on the back. the white house is considering moving all guantanamo bay detainees to a single prison in the united states. that is from senior administration officials who say that possible locations include a soon-to-be closed maximum security prison in michigan and a military pen itentiary in leavenworth, kansas. well, iran detained three american hikers. swigs d swiss diplomats are trying to meet with them today. diplomacy, that's going to be tough because the united states doesn't have relations with iran. how are they going to get them out identify ran? i left there thinking my lotto was still in my pocket. i came home and it was gone. >> ah, since he didn't sign the ticket, anybody can turn it in. 35 minutes past the hour. we're going to talk about what's going on in your backyard today. but we brought you earlier a breaking story about a plane that made an emergency landing. bob is going to show you the weather it apparently went through. good morning. >> indeed, robin. it was a little farther north than an inter-tropical convergence. let me zoom to the tropics, show you the dominican republic. you can see haiti right there, there's puerto rico. i don't see much out there, but when you go a little farther, this is the tropical wave right over puerto rico, and you can see the clouds ahead of that. might have had a little disturbance right there. the plane is about 50 miles north of the dominican republic when it encountered that massive turbulence, so it may be that tropical wave, but right now it does not look like it was a huge thunderstorm complex. across the region, high pressure dominating in the mid-lank, but when you get here, a lot of rain coming in from wisconsin into michigan. it will slide into illinois later this afternoon, but the stronger thunderstorms have been south of des moines. you can see a few thunderstorms popping there, aulgs in sheboygan. otherwise the heaviest rain is flying into michigan. more on that in a half hour. >> i have more information on that plane that would be flight 128 from rio to houston that had to make an emergency landing in miami. it is departing soon to go to houston. apparently the passengers who were not hurt are going to be going to houston now. there's the picture of them trying to get some of the injured passengers into the ambulance. today ford is announcing something that has a lot of people in the industry giving high fives. . an island that madonna once sang about is burning. check out the video from the spanish island of la palma up in west africa. 4,000 people have been evacuated. the mayor of one town said at least 50 homes have been destroyed. wind has made things almost impossible for the firefighters who say that several fires started suspiciously at the same time. it has been almost six months since president obama announced his $75 billion mortgage relief plan. but jennifer westhoven, always looking out for you here, a lot of people are saying, where did it go, because it didn't help me! >> yeah, nearly all the reports are people saying, i've been on the phone, i've got all the paper, i've made a hundred phone calls, i can't get any help. what's going on? so the white house really trying to push mortgage companies to do better when it comes to all those americans who are at risk of losing their homes, and a huge number of them, and that could be a big weight on the economy. the white house rounded up the mortgage executives, said come in. why? how come so few americans are having success with their loans? one of the things that, when i read this, really got my ire up, and i thought, i hope this is not true. the new york times is quoting mortgage experts who say they believe the reason they're dragging their feet so much is they can collect so much when it comes to late fees, that the late fees are juice ier than any of the help out there. they say they deny this, that they lose money when loans are late, but i think it certainly raised some eyebrows there. it was christmas in july for ford. ford is saying car sales jumped last month for the first time, at least since the financial crisis last fall. official july numbers for all the industry come out later on today, and experts say they are expecting to see a pretty good jump from the "cash for clunkers" program. you hear about twitter. now airlines are trying it to sell last-minute seats. they are sending out tweets that can come at any time. sometimes it's only for an hour or so. they came up with words like cheeps and twares. >> you're right. somebody sat around and thought about that. a mother got an e-mail telling her pictures of her seve seven-month-old were on the internet. what she did when she found out her kid was being offered for adoption. the cash for clunkers program is in limbo as we wait to see if the senate will approve another $2 billion to fund it. the house approved the funds on friday after car dealers burned through the $1 billion set aside in less than a week. the wildly popular incentive will credit to up to $4500 to trade in your old car for a more fuel-efficient one. >> it would probably be a good idea for the government to get these less fuel-efficient cars off the road and it would reduce our dependence on foreign oil to some extent, you know. >> they'll give me more money than my car is worth, and i don't have the 4500 to put down on a new car. >> so what do you think about the cash for clunkers program that apparently is so popular? that is what former fed chief alan greenspan said on abc's "this week." >> it is a very important indicator that the state of confidence in the economy is beginning to pick up. if we had been -- the clunker program had been put in place six months ago, it would probably have been a dud. >> so, no matter what he says, has been a good sign. now the question all right program get extended in the house has said, hey we found $2 billion we can put toward the program but senate republicans may be saying this is too expensive, which is not necessarily helping the economy, and they are threatening that they are not going to approve that money. we will see what happens. all we really know is that it is probably paid for through the weekend. >> it is interesting, not necessarily an easy program. i heard something like hundreds of pages of documents for every car. >> you have to go through and make sure that it really fits in and that you are eligible and you qualify. there is another advance in congress happening for a lot of people who may be worried about their jobless benefits. such a tough time to get a job. some lawmakers want an emergency 13-week extension of unemployment benefits. this is only in states with dram malmatically high jobless rates. we have reported how come august and september, unemployment benefits going to run out for tens of thousands of people, people who lost their jobs in the first wave of mass layoffs. almost half a million hondas are being recalled for an air bag defect that can be deadly. i want you to listen this, drive one of these cars, you know somebody who does, 2001 or 2002 accord, civics from 2001 or acura tls from 2002 and 2003. what's happened is that the air bag inflaters can overpressurize the bag and then shrapnel comes flying out. yeah, they are supposed to keep you safe but they could be dangerous. honda says at least one person has died. if you have one of these cars, don't wait for the letter to come in the mail, just get in touch with your dealer immediately. you can get it fixed up if your car is one of the ones affected. this is an expansion of a similar honda recall from last year. robin? >> good morning, rob. former u.s. military intelligence officer talked about the situation with our sister network's don lemon and he says the first step is to stay quiet. take a listen. >> strategy number one is to shut up, to not talk publicly about it. number two is to talk to anyone who is talking to the government of iran, and that is the prime minister of iraq has good relations with the government of iran and the swiss have represented our interests there for some time. this is a real opportunity for the iranians to have a public relations coup that they can somehow that they are still participatory in the community of nations by simply confirming they're students and releasing them. that would be their smart move. >> as you said, robin, united states has not had formal relations with iran since the '70s after the hostage crisis. >> diplomacy might be difficult because of the of iran's internal situation. how might that impact that?
