Headlines with rhiannon. Thanks, pip. Good afternoon. Its just gone midday. Im Rhiannon Jones in the newsroom. Im the Prime Minister will deliver a speech this afternoon. Its understood he could bring forward an announcement regarding net zero policy as rishi sunak is expected to set out. Revised plans which may include weakening the phasing out of gas boilers, as well as delaying a ban on new petrol and diesel cars. But the plan risks igniting a row within his own party, with some mps said to be penning letters of no confidence as the governments plan to deal with inflation is working. With inflation is working. Thats according to the chancellor data out this morning shows the rate of inflation fell to 6. 7 in august, down from 6. 8 in july. The bank of england had predicted the figure to increase to more than 7. It comes ahead of another expected Interest Rate increase tomorrow. It would be the banks 15th rate increase tomorrow. It would be the banks15th in a rate increase tomorrow. It would be the banks 15th in a row. Be the banks15th in a row. Chancellor jeremy be the banks15th in a row. Chancellorjeremy hunt says chancellor jeremy hunt says despite the fall , inflation is despite the fall, inflation is still too high. The path to lowering inflation is never easy because it doesnt happen in a straight line. But if you look at the overall picture since it peaked last autumn, it is now down 40. And that says the plan is working. But even at 6. 7, that is a lot of pain for ordinary families who are seeing their shopping bills go up, their fuel pnces shopping bills go up, their fuel prices go up. And that is why it is essential that we continue to stick to that plan, deliver the Prime Ministers pledge and the bank of englands target, get it right to down 2. This is gb news across the uk on tv, in your car, on Digital Radio and on your Smart Speaker by saying play gb news now its back over to martin and. Pip thanks to martin and. Pip thanks rhiannon. Rhiannon. Just to remind you of that breaking news, a downing street statement at 430 this afternoon. It is widely expected to be a u turn on the governments net zero targets. What are we expecting . Rishi sunak the Prime Minister to be saying . Well, the kind of things that have been dangled out there in the press this morning is a looking at the ban on petrol and diesel cars at present. Thats going to be 20, 30in the uk. Its currently 2035 across the European Union. So theres some talk of an alignment there. And also the gas boiler ban looks to be on the table. That also i think its 20, 35 are looking to push that back as i think its sinking in is going to cost people a lots of money. Citizens out there paying a lot of money for net zero. The concern is, though, martin, is if its pushed back to and theyre still on to 2035 and theyre still on this target of 2050, this net zero target of 2050, theres less time to do all this. And that is one of the concerns and it is causing now an almighty row within the tory party. Interesting as well that this has come out before the tory party conference. You think maybe they might have announced it then, but what they appear to be doing, what do you think trying to put more and more water. The government between themselves and labour ahead of an election in a years time. And is the strategy they and this is the strategy they believe will do that. I thats what and i think thats what people are looking for. Points of difference, wedge as of difference, wedge issues as they called , and suella they were called, and Suella Braverman said today that braverman has said today that the government is still committed to the 2050 targets, but clearly said this were not going to save the planet by bankrupting the british people. So people out there who might say thats a little bit of a little bit dramatic, slight overexaggerating, but its got us talking and thats what its all about, talking. My goodness. And lets talk more about it with our gb news Political Editor, Christopher Hope, joins from downing hope, who joins us from downing street. Christopher that statement, then the afternoon from the Prime Minister, we expect we also understand theres been a hastily arranged Cabinet Meeting today as well. Cabinet meeting today as well. All thats right. The categories meeting around now on a Conference Call, though. Im in downing street to see if anyone turns up in person. No one yet. So the meeting behind the scenes, it wasnt planned. Its an emergency Cabinet Meeting. The cabinet normally meets on a tuesday. So we werent expecting it. We werent expecting. Also this speech sorts and a press this speech of sorts and a press conference at 430 thats been dnven conference at 430 thats been driven by the leaks overnight. The bbc, as i speak to you, the actual agenda for that cabinet has been leaked to a journalist called lewis goodall. So we think judging by the reporting here, theyll be looking at delaying the off gas off grid fossil fuel belt ban till 2035. Release acas the gas boiler phaseout target in 2035. No new Energy Efficient regulations on homes. Something is happening in homes. Something is happening in the government. It feels like we saw this kind of leaking during the Boris Johnson time and its seemed to have come back to kind of hit the government now. So the sunak, the Prime Minister behind me in number 10, is being forced to take action. He wasnt planning to in the order that is happening. And christopher, this will be happening. Significant;topher, this will be happening. Significant change this will be happening. Significant change of s will be happening. Significant change of position a significant change of position by the conservative as and they went all out on 2050 net zero targets. Of course Suella Braverman doing the rounds this morning, told gb news theyre still committed to those targets. But this is a significant rollback, isnt it . And it will rollback, isnt it . And it will play rollback, isnt it . And it will play into the hands of those out there who say this government doesnt really care about the environment. Environment. Martin youre totally right. I think this is one of the most significant political moments were going to see from rishi sunakin were going to see from rishi sunak in his 11 months as Prime Minister this afternoon. Small boats, of course, a big deal. Boats, of course, is a big deal. But rowing back these but i think rowing back on these interim targets. For 20, 30 to interim targets. For 20, 30 to 2035 for many measures to try and hit 2050 net zero, it will affect millions of people, millions of our viewers at gb news. And i think it is doing its pleasing the tory, right. Its upsetting the tory left the whatsapp groups, the mps, whatsapp groups, the mps, whatsapp groups, the mps, whatsapp groups have lit up with a fierce debate behind the scenes between mps who support this attempt to try and put the cut the Government Back on the front foot politically early against those who do disagree and think its going to jeopardise on on on net zero plans. And chris, what have you heard about the fractures that this is causing with in the tory party . I mean, its been suggested that one mp was always was also talking about a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister an economic adviser to chancellor jeremy minister an economic adviser to chancellorjeremy hunt, we chancellor jeremy hunt, we understand, has warned that watering down policies to tackle the Climate Crisis will damage the Climate Crisis will damage the uks finances. Well, what were going to hear this afternoon on gb news is going to play out for weeks. Pippa across across the airwaves for us, because youve got ford , a massive us company. Youve got bmw in recent weeks investing heavily in electric batteries for its plant. The mini plant in cowley, youve got companies placing big bets of shareholders money on a government policy that is changing in real time. Thats a problem. But politically, mr sunak has to do something to try and reverse or try to eat into sunak has to do something to try ulez expansion by sadiq khan, and they think thats an answer. So thats whats happening here. Theyre trying to play into this cost of living concerns and help support a families against what they see as onerous net zero targets. But it is a massive moment in Politics Today in westminster. Indeed. And quite a day. We look forward to that News Conference later this afternoon at 430. Christopher faux pas , at 430. Christopher faux pas, Political Editor, joining us from downing street. Thank you. From downing street. Thank you. Okay. Now lets throw back to the studio. Well get some reaction on this. Are we . No, were not. The chancellor says the plan is working as inflation falls to 6. 7 due to slowing food prices. But families are still feeling the pinch with a weekly shop still costing much more than one year ago, the unexpected easing has put pressure on the bank of england to pause Interest Rates in tomorrows decision. Tomorrows decision. Lets get some expert analysis with our economics and Business EditorLiam Halligan with on the money. With on the money. Our plan is working, says rishi sunak and jeremy hunt. But inflation is still too high. We must ease the pressure on families and businesses can the government get inflation down below 5 to meet their pledge . Lets have a look at some of the numbers here. The Consumer Price indexin numbers here. The Consumer Price index in july was 6. 8. It was expected to go up during the year to august because of sharp rises in petrol and diesel prices. But it ended up going down to 6. 7, which is good news. The cost of living crisis isnt yet over, but its certainly easing internationally. Uk inflation is still quite high. Theres our 6. 7 number in august in the eurozone , august in the eurozone, inflation is averaging 5. 2. In the us , 3. 7, largely due to the us, 3. 7, largely due to Cheaper Energy prices. As every shopper knows, food Price Inflation is still an issue there. It is still up at 13. 6. The price of a basket of food will cost you 13. 6 more in august than it did in august 2022. But good news is that core inflation is coming down. Whats core inflation . Its inflation. Without food and Energy Prices, as economists try to really understand whats going on in the economy, not least with wage bargaining, much lower core inflation in august. And that means the bank of england may have more scope to keep Interest Rates on hold. Also, this is rates on hold. Also, this is really important. The producer really important. The Producer Price index is now falling. Producer prices are the costs of the inputs that firms need to produce the goods and services they then sell us in august. Producer prices fell by 2. 3. The bank of england will be certainly thinking about these Producer Prices and core inflation when it meets tomorrow. Back in december 2021, Interest Rates were just nought point 1. Ultra low emergency measures during the covid pandemic. Theyve gone up 14 times in a row to 5. 25. I think even though inflation has fallen, the bank of england still will raise Interest Rates again tomorrow. But it might be their last increase. Just their last increase. Just briefly, heres a warning. The briefly, heres a warning. The oil price, its gone up from 70 a barrel at the start of june to 95 a barrel today. Thats why 95 a barrel today. Thats why fuel prices on the four courts are soaring. Thats why are soaring. Thats why inflation still remains a dangen inflation still remains a danger. So we are an inflation nation. We must stick to our plan, says rishi sunak and jeremy hunt will they hit their 5 target by the end of the year . Maybe. And if they do , it will . Maybe. And if they do, it will certainly be good news for the conservative party and just like magic Liam Halligan is now sitting next to us like mr benn. Exactly as if by magic a amanda , you just dont wear amanda, you just dont wear quite as many costumes as what we saw there about the oil price. Thats a massive hike in three months. Its almost been its happened almost unnoticed. The happened almost unnoticed. The sort of political media class havent really clocked that. The price of oil probably the most important price in the global economy, has gone up well over 30 in just a few months. And 30 in just a few months. And thats we saw that with these big petrol and diesel price increases in august that werent quite enough to reverse the fall in inflation. Weve seen over recent months. Thats good news. But those Oil Price Rises are still there. And my concern, still there. And my concern, pip, is that oil prices usually go pip, is that oil prices usually 9 up pip, is that oil prices usually go up when the World Economy is going gangbusters is because the chinese, the americans , were chinese, the americans, were all demanding more oil. Were doing more stuff. Were making more things. But the World Economy is not going gangbusters. The World Economy economy is not going is pretty subdued and it has been since covid lockdown and yet still oil prices are soaring. And its all about geopolitics. Its all about that. Opec exporters cartel working with the russians to keep prices high. And its giving the west a hard time. Its complicating our hard time. Its complicating our ability to bring down inflation. So its a 0. 1 fall in inflation. So things arent getting cheaper, 0. 1 percentage point. Yeah. So this is gb news. We do things correctly so theyre just not getting as expensive as quickly as before. Exactly a sign of the times that we think thats good news. But back to your oil thing. Doesnt to this doesnt that tie in to this big announcement politically announcement today politically about zero . Liam . Because about net zero . Liam . Because weve been talking for a long time about cost of net zero time about the cost of net zero and now its becoming a cost of living issue, not a concept. This is no longer a theory. Its whats it going to cost and whats it going to cost me . And the question i guess ive the big question i guess ive got to you indeed got to you and indeed parliament, anyone, what is net zero going to cost . I saw one report, the Climate Change committee in 2021, a Committee Report in 2021, a bofis Committee Report in 2021, a Boris Johnson report, £1. 4 trillion by 2050. And thats equal to £4,700 for every household, every year until 2050. Is that the message thats starting to bite . And is that why the tories are realising theres some Political Capital actually in rowing back, theres actually in rowing back, theres a lot in that. Just on your first point, martin, youre right, of course pnces martin, youre right, of course prices arent coming down. The producer index is coming Producer Price index is coming down. By the way, as i as i pointed out. But prices arent coming down on the chops. Theyre going up less theyre just going up less quickly. Well quickly. Inflation is still well over the bank of over three times the bank of englands the cost of englands target. The cost of living not but living crisis is not over, but it would good if we could it would be good if we could stop having those pulverising interest if youre Interest Rate rises. If youre a young trying to weather young family trying to weather a mortgage so the cost of net zero, i do think its a cost of living issue. I do think also that this ghastly war between russia and ukraine and the impact on Energy Prices and the cost of living has really is really highlight to people who dont usually worry about these things. The cost of energy and Energy Security and where we get our from the fact our energy from and the fact that uk has no gas storage that the uk has no gas storage and we are really quite geopolitically vulnerable. But i geopolitically vulnerable. But i think what rishi sunak is trying to do, hes trying to put clear blue water between himself and the labour party. Labour is kind of islington tendency is very gung on net zero. They think its all about morale and just, you know, pull your boots up, pull your socks up and we can we can do this. Whereas actually a lot of the trade unions are really concerned about the cost of net zero. You talk to the gmb about, you know, the impact of the windfall tax in the north sea on on on know many thousands of oil workers for instance. And so i think what sunak is trying to do, hes trying to show ordinary voters is that he gets it that net zero isnt just some fantasy virtue signalling movement of the political and media class. There is the flip side to this will be all the investment thatis this will be all the investment that is going into this country to prepare for electric vehicles. So weve got the battery plant, havent we . What about all the investment . Hang on, let me finish. Ellesmere port, you went to the other day, stellantis. They are to going be manufacturing only electric cars. Now understandable. Yes. Now its understandable if Car Manufacturers like ford are saying, hang on, theres no consistency here. No. Sure, theres no commitment. Oh, sure. Theres no commitment. Oh, sure. But you know, some people would counter, what about all the isnt the investment that isnt happening north sea . Is happening in the north sea . Is ev really the way to go . You know, when the governments and bureaucrats pick up the Technology History shows it goes wrong because they dont actually know what theyre doing. The private sector has to incrementally pick a technology. The danger is that were putting so many eggs in this ev basket when it may not even be the technology we were massively electric massively subsidising electric vehicles when it may not even be the right technology. And, you know, from me. Why know, dont take it from me. Why cant we build any gigafactories in country . Why do have in this country . Why do we have to Massive International to give Massive InternationalCompanies Hundreds of millions of taxpayers money in of pounds of taxpayers money in subsidies these things subsidies to build these things because theyre not convinced, because theyre not convinced, because sector is because the private sector is not that evs are the not convinced that evs are the way to go. If they were , youd way to go. If they were, youd get gigafactories going up all over britain. Theyre only going up when theyre massively subsidised. Think back to when subsidised. Think back to when the European Union said that we werent allowed to use traditional light bulbs anymore. We use fluorescent we all have to use fluorescent light bulbs. Ive got a drawer full home because full of them at home because i bought them in bulk thinking, oh , ill be really clever. But then years despite us then two years later, despite us being we had to use being told by law, we had to use these useless fluoresce, dim light you couldnt even light bulbs, you couldnt even read a book by them. Led came out became commercially out and became commercially viable and now we all use led so thank you eu bureaucrats for making me buy all these useless light bulbs. Did the fluorescent light bulbs. Did the fluorescent light bulbs. Did the fluorescent Light Industry some light bulb industry bung some eu bureaucrats to tell them to pass this law . Im being facetious, but im not really the point is that when bureaucrats and Civil Servants decide that what the right technology is history shows theyre nearly always wrong because how could they not be . Could they possibly know . Okay, liam, we will pick this up again over the next 2 or 3 hours. He is on fire and you might be on fire as well. We want to know what you think. Vaiews gbnews. Com do get in touch with us and we will read out some of your thoughts. We will. Now moving on the fall in inflation has come as a bit of a surprise. Many expected the rise due to the sharp rise bit of a surprise. Many expected th hello. Yes well, last month we saw, well, motorists are basically being told to brace themselves for even more fuel price rises. Last month, motorists were charged an extra £0. 10 on average a litre for petrol and £0. 13 a litre for diesel. So on £0. 13 a litre for diesel. So on average uk motorists are now paying average uk motorists are now paying £1. 55 a litre for petrol and £1. 59 a litre for diesel, all being driven up by the increase in the cost of oil. So speaking to people here, theyve all said the same thing. Theyre fed up at the moment with the way things are with the economy and this is just another worry, another another thing. Theyre going have to find for. Going to have to find money for. But i we just but i think we can just hear from those people now. From a few of those people now. Its ridiculous at the moment. I just £50 in for moment. I just put £50 in for half a tank of petrol and that has never been before. Ive never done that before. I just never done that before. I just think its ridiculous and i dont know what im going to do if it goes up any more. Luckily, if it goes up any more. Luckily, i drive a hybrid , so im kind of i drive a hybrid, so im kind of all right in that department. I think with the cost of living crisis in general, its just an added extra that no one needs. So it makes people feel like they shouldnt driving as they shouldnt be driving as much that they cant drive as much or that they cant drive as much. Youve got much. And then youve got obviously ulez change and obviously the ulez change and things its just things like that. So its just added that dont need to happen. Its infringing on the normal motorists to earn an motorists trying to earn an honest mean, just honest living. I mean, we just had that ridiculous mess up with ulez mr khan. Mean, and ulez with mr khan. I mean, and if go up once more , its if prices go up once more, its going to be another blow to us people. Not going to be not people. Its not going to be not going to be welcomed by anyone. Going to be welcomed by anyone. And people are being warned that this price rise with fuel, we might not see that drop until the end of the year as the oil pnces the end of the year as the Oil Prices Continue to surge. Prices continue to surge. Okay, lisa hartle thank you. Okay, lisa hartle thank you. Youve been checking your local petrol station. Im obsessed with the price of petrol. I take a photo every day. I cant believe it. So this morning, where i live in south east london, its 161. 9 south east london, its161. 9 pence for a litre of diesel. Thats what i drive against 154. 94 petrol. I dont understand why its so, so different. I mean, it reached parity the week. I was amazed for the first time, but i think its so interesting when lisas talking to motorists there, when the concept meets the cost. Ulez is biting Energy Dependency on importation is although running an electric car in the long run is cheaper than filling up your car with petrol and i do think theres a little bit of i dont know whether the message has got out clearly enough that its not that come well as it was 2030, it now might be 2035. Its not like people are going to have their cars taken away from them. Theyre just not going to be building more. So you still be driving your you can still be driving your petrol car after petrol and diesel car after 2030. You just cant buy one if you get rid of it. But i think people have every right to feel slightly suspicious about the fact new regulations, slightly suspicious about the fact taxation new regulations, slightly suspicious about the fact taxation mayw regulations, slightly suspicious about the fact taxation may comerlations, slightly suspicious about the fact taxation may come in. Ions, new taxation may come in. I think its a question of trust. Yeah , right. Well, just to yeah, right. Well, just to remind you, the Prime Minister will be talking about this very issue. It is the story of the day. I think at 430 this afternoon. And we will bring you it live here on gb news. Well, another big story today is nhs strikes. More nhs strikes. But strikes. More nhs strikes. But for the first time in the history of the health service, Junior Doctors and consultants are together holding industrial action today. Yeah, members of the bma are working on a Christmas Day cover basis, meaning Emergency Care will continue to be provided , will continue to be provided, but thousands of appointments will have to be rescheduled as well as being out today, Junior Doctors will strike tomorrow and fri day. Friday. This week, while further strikes , joint strikes are strikes, joint strikes are planned for the start of october. Well , what does october. Well, what does downing street have to say about all of these infernal strikes . Well, these infernal strikes . Well, lets speak now to our Political Correspondent olivia utley, whos in westminster. So, olivia, this store has been knocked slightly off the radar by this huge net zero announcement were expecting today at 430. Nevertheless this has been rolling on now since december. Its cost the economy £1 billion, an extra 1 million nhs appointments have been cancelled, making it 7. 7 million. Whats the latest state of play politically . Well as you of play politically . Well as you say, martin, i think were all feeling a bit of strike fatigue. No one really wants to hear about it anymore. But that doesnt mean that the situation has any the situation has got any better. Got a lot better. In fact, its got a lot worse. For the first time today in unprecedented action, consultants and Junior Doctors are both striking today. Consultants were striking yesterday as well. And Junior Doctors will be striking tomorrow and friday. This week, it is estimated alone that 100,000 hospital appointments are going to be cancelled, which will take the total all over the six strikes that weve had in the last year, up to a million operations cancelled. Now nhs operations cancelled. Now nhs waiting lists are already incredibly long. They hit 7 million for the first time earlier this year. That is a decent proportion of the population on an nhs waiting list. And of course there are knock on effects too, that there are people who are unable to go back because theyre back to work because theyre experiencing chronic pain and need an operation to it out need an operation to sort it out. Those operations will be pushed further back to pushed further, further back to the of this ever growing the bottom of this ever growing list. At the remarks weve heard list. At the remarks weve heard today from the top doctors in the nhs have been deeply, deeply concerning. Weve heard that concerning. Weve heard that Patient Safety , although weve Patient Safety, although weve put of mitigation measures put lots of mitigation measures in Patient Safety will be in place. Patient safety will be compromised. Thats what stephen compromised. Thats what Stephen Powis the medical director of the nhs, has said. So its really, really not looking good now. Steve barclay, the Health Secretary, is trying to impose his minimum Service Legislation on doctors so that when the next strikes take place over the very start of october, which theyve been planned to coincide with the tory party conference, hes hoping that some routine procedures, which are time sensitive, for example, dialysis or chemo therapy, will still be able to go ahead. But doctors are really pushing back against this under laws passed over the summer. They should be forced to do it. But its all looking quite complicated and i doubt the rules over. The rules over. Yeah, and doesnt Steve Barclays plans there with that legislation just aggravate the row even further . And also we talk about Patient Safety. See talk about Patient Safety. See the other side to this is that the other side to this is that the bma is saying well, every single week 500 people are dying unnecessarily because of there not being enough doctors in the nhs as well. Nhs as well. Whats so tricky about this is just the massive gulf between where the government stands on doctor pay and where the bma , doctor pay and where the bma, the biggest doctors union, stands. And earlier this year we stands. And earlier this year we saw most of the Public Service strikes resolved when the government decided to give a rise of between 6 and 7 to most pubuc rise of between 6 and 7 to most Public Sector workers. So policemen , nurses, for example, policemen, nurses, for example, most of the unions were happy with that. But the bma were not happy with that , according to happy with that, according to the bma. And, you know, many people may really see where they come from. And Junior Doctors have seen their pay decrease in real terms. By 35 since two real terms. By 35 since two thousand and seven. So they are asking for a 35 pay increase, which they say will take them only back to where they were in real terms, taking inflation into account in two thousand and seven. So if you just look at the difference there , weve got the difference there, weve got the difference there, weve got the government proposed raising a 6. 5 pay rise. The bma asking for a 35 pay rise, very , very for a 35 pay rise, very, very hard to see how an agreement is going to be reached and while they battle it out , it will be they battle it out, it will be patients who are compromised. Yeah, the gulf seems to be ever growing. Olivia olivia ever growing. Olivia olivia utley, our Political Correspondent, thanks so much. Correspondent, thanks so much. Okay. And joining us live now from a picket line at the Royal London Hospital is gb News National reporter theo theo chikomba. Theo, thanks for joining us. Whats the news on the front line of the pickets today . Well a very good afternoon to you from east london at the royal london hosphal weve just done a lap around the hospital. Hundreds of staff co ordinated strike action today. Bma members and unite the Union Members here have gathered to strike today. Its one of a to strike today. Its one of a number of days, particularly this month and in october, as well. And weve seen all the placards, some of them as well. And they say there needs to be some change. But as youve heard just a few moments ago from olivia, going be olivia, its going to be a difficult to negotiate. Difficult one to negotiate. Things havent gone as smoothly as they would wanted to as as they would have wanted to as weve been through this already this with similar strike this year with similar strike action seen in other parts of the year. Now, the bma Junior Doctors, for example, want a pay restoration similar to what was in 2008 2009. And of course , in 2008 2009. And of course, that will match with whats currently happening in terms of inflation. Kindly joined by an aa representative of unite the union. Thank you so much for union. Thank you so much for joining us this afternoon. The numbers here, they tell a story, dont they . Yes they do. Our members have been taking strike action today because they want a fair and decent pay award. But fair and decent pay award. But crucially, they also want what they also want to be paid, what they also want to be paid, what they are owed. What the government promised hasnt been paid in full and just as importantly as that is that this demonstration today and the strike action is about safety. We want safe Staffing Levels in hospitals and we havent got that at the moment. And thats why were taking strike action. Well as result strike action. Well as a result of action, it means the of strike action, it means the workers weve seen today arent on for example, the on shift. For example, the health has they Health Secretary has said they are at contingency plans Health Secretary has said they are days at contingency plans Health Secretary has said they are days like it contingency plans Health Secretary has said they are days like todayingency plans Health Secretary has said they are days like today. |gency plans Health Secretary has said they are days like today. What plans Health Secretary has said they are days like today. What do ans Health Secretary has said they are days like today. What do you for days like today. What do you make of, you know, when people say people are not at work today , this has an impact on patients. For example . Again, the health well, once again, the Health Secretary is asleep at the wheel. Hes proposals around the legislation nothing to legislation will do nothing to get the Staffing Levels that get us the Staffing Levels that we hospitals. We need in hospitals. And harsh reality is that and the harsh reality is that often when we take action, we agree emergency Staffing Levels anyway and quite often they are better for than on non strike days. So thats our message were taking necessary , were taking necessary, necessary action to make sure that there is Proper Staffing every single day of the year while the Health Secretary just wants to concentrate on strike days , if you like. Hes asleep days, if you like. Hes asleep at the wheel. We need safe staffing every single day. Time and time again, weve heard the government saying we are looking to reduce inflation. Do you think that sort of makes Health Workers feel like theyre not as valued as they should be . I think you make an excellent point and lets be clear about what reducing inflation means, because when inflation goes down, it doesnt mean prices go down. It just means that the rate of increase slows down slightly. So it doesnt mean that prices come down. So our members have been having to deal with low pay and high inflation. Our members are having to rely on food banks, in some cases provided by the hospitals themselves for their own staff. Thatis themselves for their own staff. That is not an acceptable situation in the sixth richest economy in the world. Thank you so much for your time this afternoon. And of course , they afternoon. If you havent heard of it. And its supply is over 40 of the water to Northern Irelands homes. However, over the summer it has been producing large blooms of green and blue algae and there are now real worries about there are now real worries about the health of the loch and its surrounding wetlands. Surrounding wetlands. Our Northern Ireland reporter Dougie Beattie has been finding out more. Out more. The scale of loch ness used is bigger than the country of malta. You know, its of global importance fish importance because of the fish that come here from the sargasso sea. The that come here from the sargasso sea. The birds that come from iceland. You know, it occupies a global important wetland and were treating it like a cesspit i james orr is from friends of the earth and believes harder penalties on big business might stop the problem. Stop the problem. Theres too much pollution going into loch ness and the pollution mainly comes from two sources. The biggest contributor is what we would call industrial agriculture to and then the secondary source is human effluent. Human pollution, mainly from Sewage Treatment works that arent working as they should. But also i would they should. But also i would say about 10 may be coming from septic tank runoff from all the isolated houses isolated individual houses around ness in northern around loch ness in Northern Ireland. There is no such thing as the rule of law when it comes to the environment. So we see to the environment. So we see breaches continually. If there breaches continually. If there is a fine , its pathetic. You is a fine, its pathetic. You know, some of the Big Companies in england are getting fined tens of millions of pounds. The algae expanding because of algae is expanding because of the high levels of phosphate and nutrients the water, and nutrients in the water, and agriculture is taking its part of the blame. Gerry darby is the of the blame. Gerry darby is the manager of lochnell partnership, who explains the scale and challenge of the problem. Challenge of the problem. We work with farmers on the immediate shores of loch ness and we have a little environmental Farm Programme of 150 farmers, but that doesnt really have any real strategic impact because as runoff is coming from way up in the Sperrin Mountains , its coming Sperrin Mountains, its coming from way down there in the south, from county monaghan, way down the blackwater river. So its coming from all over 45 of all the water that lands in Northern Ireland ends up in that what is essentially a big bucket. So its a big bucket with five pipes flowing in and one pipe flowing, flowing out, and therefore its very susceptible to holding nutrients and any nutrients that come in from all that wide strategic area cant be kept in that bad soil. So the answer to the problem isnt with the likes of ourselves and the loch neigh partnership, you know, working with 150 farmers, the answer is working with thousands of farmers that are actually are along those big, big catchment areas. Areas. South antrim alliance, Mla John Blair wants the situation to be addressed quickly , but to be addressed quickly, but points to decades of wrongdoing. Some of us have been working hard with local agencies and especially with those who live and trade on the shores of this loch and depend on this loch for their way of life to see if we can find solutions to that. And its crucial that in the days and weeks ahead that all of us involved in public life and on an interdepartmental and inter agency we every inter agency basis, we do every single thing we can to try and put right what has gone wrong here year. And what has here this year. And what has gone wrong in the decades before. This year that has led to this situation. Problems clear and some clear for all to see and some joined up policy needs to come quickly. Dougie beattie, gb news loch ness right. Loch ness right. Lets have a look at what you think of what were talking about today. The inbox is getting very full, so we will start with what you think about the fall in inflation by 0. 1. Well, judith says the powers that be have less foresight than relying on a crystal ball. They relying on a crystal ball. They make predictions and rarely get it right. Make predictions and rarely get it right. Its make predictions and rarely get it right. Its nearly always it right. Its nearly always surprise, surprise and then they want credit when the outcome is good. Yeah. Martin not me. Martin says. What exactly has jeremy hunt done to lower petrol and food costs to cause of inflation to fall . What makes sense . Im not sure that makes sense. So what hes saying is, whats the government done to make inflation fall . Will this just have happened anyway . Oh i see. They take the credit for it. Yeah, well, plenty of people are asking that as well. Mel says it will be interesting to see if the size of supermarket products get larger again as inflation goes down. That could be or be wishful thinking. Or will wealthy manufacturers and wealthy food manufacturers and retailers still make us pay more for less to make more profits . For less to make more profits . Yeah, and that, of course, is the shrink thing. The old shrink inflation thing. Now, had lower of now, weve also had lower of comments coming in because the big today big debate were having today is, is britain right to ditch net zero targets . Of course, theres a press conference for £0. 30 in theres a press conference for £0. 30 m today by Prime Minister rishi sunak making expected to make a big announcement. Suella braverman doing the rounds this morning saying were not going to save the planet by bankrupt ing the british people. So we asked earlier and its fair asked you earlier and its fair to say a lot of people are backing as cost of living backing this as a cost of living development. Dear aunty here development. Dear aunty here says yes , i do back this, but says yes, i do back this, but im pretty sure rishi will mean hell mean what he says for as long as it takes him to get re elected. After that, anything can happen. So pip, the feeling can happen. So pip, the feeling there is that this is political opportunism is rishis heart actually in it . Because dont forget, he gives away lots of money to green Climate Change initiatives and were only a year away from a general election, so maybe , you know, election, so maybe, you know, this has been on the cards for while. He knows hes got to do something. Like we were saying earlier, to increase that amount of clear blue water between him earlier, to increase that amount of c|labour. E water between him earlier, to increase that amount of cilabour. At ater between him earlier, to increase that amount of cilabour. At one between him earlier, to increase that amount of cilabour. At one point. En him earlier, to increase that amount of cilabour. At one point. It him earlier, to increase that amount of cilabour. At one point. It wasi and labour. At one point. It was also made to me that thought also made to me that i thought was interesting that was quite interesting that if you an electric car, the you drive an electric car, the cost of insurance , your car cost of insurance, your Car Insurance could go up by a heck of a lot. I mean, one figure thats been suggested was was 60. Now why is that . Is that because of a to do with its to do with the battery right. What is a fire risk or is it that. Yeah. Well to do yeah. If you have accident and involves have an accident and it involves an electric car battery then the battery gets written and battery gets written off and its the cost. Its a massive part of the cost. Yeah. I didnt know that. Yeah. I didnt know that. Well, maybe something well, maybe thats something we can explore a little we can. We can explore a little bit more. Thought that was bit more. I thought that was a really interesting point. Should bit more. I thought that was a rea get nteresting point. Should bit more. I thought that was a rea get toeresting point. Should bit more. I thought that was a rea get to onting point. Should bit more. I thought that was a rea get to on someoint. Should bit more. I thought that was a rea get to on some whether. Jld we get to on some whether. Yeah, why not . If all else fails, lets that. Fails, lets do that. Hurricane nigel. Fails, lets do that. Yeahcane nigel. Fails, lets do that. Yeah named gel. Thought we had yeah named not thought we had a nigel on the show a hurricane nigel on the show yesterday. Did. We talked about the we did. We talked about the de banking this de banking scandal, but no, this is hurricane nigel, is weather and hurricane nigel, which across uk. Which is sweeping across the uk. Later this week, bringing further heavy showers and thunderstorms across the thunderstorms right across the country. Country. W w country. Storm nigel, what yeah, and storm nigel, what a fantastically name fantastically british name is set hit country around set to hit the country around 4 00 pm this afternoon. And this comes after hurricane lee , comes days after hurricane lee, which currently lashing parts which is currently lashing parts of wales, north west of of wales, the north west of england , and of course parts of england, and of course parts of scotland. Scotland. Well, joining us now is weather forecast. John kettley. Weather forecast. John kettley. Johnin weather forecast. John kettley. John in those warmer temperatures that we had in september earlier this month , september earlier this month, well, they seem long gone now. I mean, i even saw somebody on the train with scarf today. Train with a scarf on today. Arent we strange , really . Arent we strange, really . Arent we strange, really . I mean, we love all these different types of weather, but they do come along from time to time, just like a train, though they dont always come along at they dont always come along at the time. But nonetheless, the right time. But nonetheless, we get these of stormy we do get these trains of Stormy Weather we also get these weather and we also get these spells, probably spells spells, probably shorter spells of weather and of warm and sunny weather and thats the way things tend to be, especially at this time of the we get september the year. We get into september and start to see and october, we start to see a peakin and october, we start to see a peak in activity coming across the atlantic. Old the atlantic. The old hurricanes, the whole old hurricanes, the whole the old tropical out of tropical storms coming out of america. Nigel actually america. So nigel actually was named americans. Its named by the americans. Its nothing with but were nothing to do with us, but were going to absorb it into our atmosphere here in the next 4 or 5 days. At the moment, as youve mentioned already, there is plenty around. Theres plenty of rain around. Theres some too, and some strong winds, too, and thats lee and to do thats to do with lee and to do with margot. So these are the previous which are previous hurricanes which are now over the uk and now sitting over the uk and probably the today is as probably the weather today is as bad going to when bad as its going to be when nigel in over the nigel suddenly gets in over the weekend, probably on late saturday sunday morning. Saturday into sunday morning. Course. Well, for now, of course. Well, for starters, its great to talk to you, kettley is you, john kettley is a weatherman, one of those weatherman, was one of those songs as an songs i used to have as an earworm, as a teenager is fantastic. You. The big fantastic. Speak to you. The big question, i guess, is how how many more of these events are we going to get . Are they becoming increasingly common due to Climate Change, this just Climate Change, or is this just the weather as far as im concerned, its what happens every year. It is the climate. It doesnt mean to say its Climate Change, its global warming. So theres more energy being put into the atmosphere of these atmosphere as each of these hurricanes develops and the sea temperatures over in the atlantic at the moment are higher. This year than they are normally. Because of the normally. Thats because of the el effect, and thats el nino effect, and thats occurring ocean. Occurring in the pacific ocean. So this not Climate Change. So this is not Climate Change. This what happens year, this is what happens every year, some we get more storms some years we get more storms than others and some are more severe than others. But they dont always hit the same parts of for as they of america, for example, as they are year. And they are doing this year. And they dont all sweep across the atlantic northwestern atlantic up to northwestern parts as some of them parts of britain as some of them are doing at the moment. So every is different. Every year is different. Thats the this job and the beauty of this job and thats why im still doing it. Although the weather, john, at incredibly at the moment is incredibly unsettled. Its not particularly unsettled. Its not particularly cold, at all. I mean, cold, though, at all. I mean, temperatures theyre well, temperatures theyre still well, they feel like theyre still above the average september. Above the average for september. Oh, they are indeed. Yes. Some places in the extreme south east where youve still some places in the extreme sou thezast where youve still some places in the extreme sou the dry where youve still some places in the extreme sou the dry weather uve still some places in the extreme sou the dry weather at ve still some places in the extreme sou the dry weather at the till got the dry weather at the moment across parts of east anglia, essex, up into suffolk. Youre degrees youre looking at 21, 22 degrees today, which isnt bad. But elsewhere this pouring rain, elsewhere in this pouring rain, its about 15 or 16 degrees. And temperatures are dipping away in the next few days, were going to swinging around to see the wind swinging around from into the west. From the south into the west. And as we get and then the northwest as we get through friday. Things are through friday. So things are dipping temperatures are dipping away. Temperatures are on the on the turn downwards and therell be some chillier nights as so far, as you say, as well. But so far, as you say, its been really warm its been a really warm september, helped by those first fortnight, first two weeks fortnight, that first two weeks when we got some really glorious sunshine. Lasts sunshine. But it rarely lasts for a whole at this time for a whole month. At this time of year, we normally get of the year, we normally get these storms coming through and thats change thats going to change everything going everything and its going to change doubt change things no doubt into october as well. Well be talking about the same talking again about the same sort of events. Is there anything now, john is there anything in theory because ive in this theory because ive noficedl in this theory because ive noticed i used to take holidays in september before had in september before i had kids and cant. Too expensive. And now i cant. Too expensive. But seems to be seems but september seems to be seems to be of a corker of a to be a bit of a corker of a month. We always seem to have warmer milder septembers warmer and milder septembers and augusts have been a bit and the augusts have been a bit rubbish, frank. Is there rubbish, to be frank. Is there anything september rubbish, to be frank. Is there arnowrg september rubbish, to be frank. Is there arnow becoming september rubbish, to be frank. Is there arnow becoming moreeptember rubbish, to be frank. Is there arnow becoming more of ember is now becoming more of a banger . Forget about storm. I mean generally they feel mean in generally they feel warmer and milder and a nicer month. Month. Yes, ive said for many , many yes, ive said for many, many years that september is a is a late summer month. Theres no doubt about that. I think the summers are extending through into autumn much more regularly now. And i think thats fairly common thats been happening certainly for the last 20, 25 years. That order. Years. Something of that order. It probably wasnt the same when it probably wasnt the same when i was growing up. And its just the way things tend be, you the way things tend to be, you know, talk about spring know, people talk about spring arriving earlier these days. I dont agree with that either. I think spring actually starts a little later now. The little bit later now. And the season been twisted back season has all been twisted back to in year. So as far to later in the year. So as far as im concerned , i dont have as im concerned, i dont have the figures in front of me to prove it. Just how it feels prove it. Its just how it feels to as as a weather man. I to me as a as a weather man. I think springs actually drag think springs actually do drag on a little bit and we get some mixed summers we always do. Mixed summers that we always do. Sometimes hot, sometimes mixed summers that we always do. Sonvery|es hot, sometimes mixed summers that we always do. Sonvery|es andt, sometimes mixed summers that we always do. Sonvery|es andt, somthe1es its very wet. And thats the way things but as you say, way things go. But as you say, martin yes, certainly we get some better septembers these days did 30 years days than we did 30 or 40 years ago. No doubt about that. Days than we did 30 or 40 years agoim doubt about that. Days than we did 30 or 40 years agoim all ubt about that. Days than we did 30 or 40 years agoim all for about that. Days than we did 30 or 40 years agoim all for bringingiat. Days than we did 30 or 40 years agoim all for bringing on the im all for bringing on the autumn i love it. I autumn now, john. I love it. I love sights, the leaves. Love the sights, the leaves. I love the sights, the leaves. I love the sights, the leaves. I love the smell. I love getting my long boots on. I adore it. Are we going to see that in the next couple of weeks or as we get into october . We going get into october . Are we going to distinct change to feel that distinct change when comes to it starting to when it comes to it starting to feel lovely, crisp feel chilly, those lovely, crisp mornings . Mornings . Well, will be some well, there will be some chillier mornings, but at the moment i wouldnt go overboard about i think itll be about this. I think itll be some you start some while yet before you start kicking the leaves around kicking all the leaves around down and dont down the street. And we dont want quite honestly , i want that, quite honestly, i dont what think dont know what you think about the as far as im the weather, but as far as im concerned, i dont want all the drains by more drains being blocked by more leaves. Torrential leaves. I dont want torrential rainfall this rainfall and all this local flooding that occurs when you get this sort of event. So as far as im concerned, youre steady go, pip. Just hold steady as you go, pip. Just hold your far as. Your horses as far as. Not the most okay, im not the most patient person, thank patient person, so thank you, uncle for advice. Uncle john, for that advice. Yeah, superb. Uncle john, for that advice. Yeajohn perb. Uncle john, for that advice. Yeajohn kelly is a weather man. John kelly is a weather man. Hes a legend. Its absolutely an honour. I just. I hes a legend. Its absolutely an honour. Ijust. I grew hes a legend. Its absolutely an honour. I just. I grew up an honour. Ijust. I grew up with that fella. What a legend. I know. Hes great. And i had a nightmare yesterday. I got home ive these home and ive got these ornamental. Know what ornamental. I dont know what theyre mirrors to theyre like. Garden mirrors to make your garden look and make your garden look wider and bigger. Absolutely bigger. Theyre absolutely lovely. Foot lovely. Theyre like six foot high. In the strong high. Got home and in the strong winds, course, blown winds, of course, its blown oven winds, of course, its blown over, smashed everywhere. Over, smashed glass everywhere. Quite pricey. Thats quite pricey. Thats quite pricey. Pricey. And i was just it is pricey. And i was just terrified my dogs were going to get cut. It was so yeah, get cut. It was awful. So yeah, we are hoping those strong winds, hurricane nigel isnt going to cause too much damage. But there are those weather warnings in place. So do watch. Watch how you go when you are out about. Out and about. Look too severe, doesnt look too severe, though. Its good for though. And its good. Good for john in and sort of talk john to come in and sort of talk it talk down a bit, because it talk it down a bit, because dont forget, every time we have a breath of air, i am listening. Martin im im listening. Martin im just every time just checking every time someones to kick off now, someones here to kick off now, its always the end of the word world. Its always apocalypse. Its always and always meltdown time. And i think great of john there think it was great of john there to as you go. Its to say steady as you go. Its just weather. Happens just the weather. At moment were under at the moment were under the influence to the influence of low pressure to the northwest this northwest of the uk. This is bringing winds also bringing strong winds and also a weather front across the south east as we go through the afternoon into the evening afternoon and into the evening leading to some heavy rain could cause some as we go cause some problems as we go through rush in through evening rush hour in particular elsewhere, particular here. Elsewhere, overnight, some overnight, there will be some clear but also clear skies around, but also still showers, particularly clear skies around, but also stilwestern. Howers, particularly clear skies around, but also stilwestern partss, particularly clear skies around, but also stilwestern parts of particularly clear skies around, but also stilwestern parts of englandrly clear skies around, but also stilwestern parts of england and for western parts of england and wales and towards the north and west of scotland northern west of scotland and Northern Ireland. Under clear skies, ireland. Under the clear skies, temperatures going to dip temperatures are going to dip a little lower than they have little bit lower than they have done through recent nights. Done through some recent nights. Many and though, many towns and cities, though, just up in double just about holding up in double figures thursday figures through thursday morning. In the morning. Then any rain in the south east quickly clearing away. Is a brighter, away. And then it is a brighter, sunnier picture of us sunnier picture for many of us than has been recently. But than it has been recently. But by the time that we get to the afternoon, i am expecting plenty of develop across of showers to develop across parts wales and parts of england and wales and the and the showers across scotland and northern be merging Northern Ireland will be merging into spells of rain. Into some longer spells of rain. Heavy at times with those strong, gusty winds still to temperatures strong, gusty winds still to tem compared to today. But two compared to today. Its understood he could bring forward an announcement regarding net zero policies. Rishi sunak sunaks expected to set out revised plans which may include weakening the phasing out of gas boilers, as well as delaying a ban on new petrol and diesel cars. Ban on new petrol and diesel cars. But the ban on new petrol and diesel cars. But the plan ban on new petrol and diesel cars. But the plan risks cars. But the plan risks igniting a row within his own party with some mps said to be penning letters of no confidence. The governments plan to deal with inflation is working. Thats according to the chancellor data out this morning showed the rate of inflation fell to 6. 7 in august, down from 6. 8in july. The bank of england had predicted the figure to increase to more than 7. It comes ahead of another expected Interest Rate increase tomorrow. It would be the banks 15th in it would be the banks15th in a row. Chancellor jeremy hunt says row. Chancellorjeremy hunt says despite the fall, inflation is still too high. To martin and. Pip rhiannon. Thank you. Lets take you thank you. Lets take you straight to paris now where king charles and Queen Camilla have just landed at orly airport. Just landed at orly airport. They are about to disembark the plane. These are live pictures for you. They are live. So apologies if they are a little shaky at the moment, but they are going to be greeted by the french Prime Minister on behalf of the french president and government and there will be a guard of honour lining the route from the plane , which we should from the plane, which we should see very shortly. Now of course, this is a visit that was postponed from the spring. Its a three day trip, but it had to be scheduled because of widespread rioting in france over Pension Reforms. If you are over Pension Reforms. If you are on twitter , you will have seen on twitter, you will have seen the french president perhaps issuing a very poignant welcome to the king and queen ahead of their arrival. Hes written you visited as a prince, as you return as a king. Your majesty, welcome. And the doors are about welcome. And the doors are about to open. Martin yeah, theyre just about to open. In fact, here we go. The hatch is opening. Here come the royals. A royal touch down quite a week for on british and french relationships caused keir starmer was there yesterday with macron now now charles and. Macron now now charles and. Camilla a speech is due later on. Pip. Very impressive. The king is due to speak in french. Hes good at that, apparently. Always impresses me that because im bit more of a kind because im a bit more of a kind of monge monge to sort of of monge to monge to sort of merchant. Theyre going to merchant. Yeah. Theyre going to be given a ceremonial welcome. There charles now there is king charles now disembarking on the plane with the Queen Camilla. It is a little windy just like it is here on the other side of the channel. That is why she appears to be hanging very firmly onto her hat. Great to the Royal Standard on the front of the british airways, the magnificent aircraft with the french flag. Wonderful sign of unity there. Pip now they are going to be welcomed at the arc de triomphe and theres going to be a state banquet at the palace of versailles later. This is their first state visit since king charles was made. King it had to be postponed a few months ago because of that , those violent because of that, those violent demonstrations. But they will be demonstrations. But they will be shortly meeting president macron and his wife , brigitte, for a and his wife, brigitte, for a ceremony of remembrance and wreath laying at the arc de triomphe in the heart of paris. Our royal correspondent Cameron Walker, is in paris. Hes been hes hotfooted it from new york, in fact, hasnt he . We was covering the visit of prince william. We will be joining him very shortly. But at the moment, king charles and Queen Camilla are being welcomed at orly airport in paris. And tomorrow , senators and and tomorrow, senators and members of Frances National assembly will gather to hear that speech from king charles. As i said, it expected to be delivered in french, which no doubt be very impressive to doubt will be very impressive to the and before the visit the locals. And before the visit ends, queen will ends, the king and queen will travel bordeaux to visit an travel to bordeaux to visit an organic vineyard and celebrate the citys connections with the uk. Bordeaux, of course, has uk. Bordeaux, of course, has great connections to the and great connections to the uk and the wine industry. Indeed i know that keen wine that theyre keen wine collectors. Its see collectors. Its great to see the hats almost blowing off there. Camillas hat. Correspondent our royal correspondent Cameron Walker , i understand, Cameron Walker, i understand, can talk to us now as camilla Queen Camilla hangs on to her hat. Cameron, they are getting quite a welcome, a long overdue welcome. Welcome. Yes, a very big, long overdue welcome. Six months, in fact, as welcome. Six months, in fact, as you said , of course, its a you said, of course, its a delayed state visit to france after those riots due to french Pension Reforms. You mentioned camilla holding on to her hat there. Her majesty the queen. Shes wearing a dusty pink wool crepe coat dress by fiona clark, a pink beret shaped hat with a leaf designed by Philip Treacy as well. The king and queen have as well. The king and queen have flown to orly airports from raf farnborough on a plane thats sometimes known as the baby voyager. But its actually an voyager. But its actually an airbus 3 2, one. But following this welcome theyre having at the airport, the king and queen will be making their way to where i am at the arc de triomphe in central palace, because today is all about ceremony, pomp and pageantry. Ceremony, pomp and pageantry. And president macron wrote to the king on social media a little bit earlier on today, and he said, you visited as a prince and you return as a king. Your majesty, because this majesty, welcome. Because this is, believe it or not, the kings 35th official visit to france. But of course, its the first time as king. Previously he was prince of wales. Its also the ninth official visit of her majesty , the queen to the her majesty, the queen to the country. She and its very country. She and its very significant that the arc de triomphe has been chosen as this location. Its incredibly rare that the french president s would welcome a visiting head of state at the arc de triomphe. Perhaps, perhaps emphasising the closeness or how important both the british and french governments take the relationship between our two countries and the role in which the british monarchy, particularly the king and his power of soft diplomacy , plays power of soft diplomacy, plays with that. So theres going to be a guard of honour here at the arc de triomphe. And quite arc de triomphe. And quite pointedly, actually, the last time this happens was in 2014, because the arc de triomphe was the location for the ceremonial welcome of her late majestys last state visit to france in 2014. The king is going to be ianed 2014. The king is going to be invited to symbolically light the eternal flame at the arc de triomphe , which burns in memory triomphe, which burns in memory of those who perished in the first and Second World Wars and a wreath a anglo sorry, a franco british wreath decorated with ribbons of the king and president macron will be laid on their behalf outside , outside their behalf outside, outside their behalf outside, outside the arc de triomphe as well. The arc de triomphe as well. Following that, the king and queen will be sorry. The king and president macron will be holding talks in the elysee palace. And as you said, theres going to a magnificent state going to be a magnificent state banquet tonight at palace of banquet tonight at the palace of versailles, as well. Of course, theres to going be a few very high profile guests at that, including axa, who a grant. And then tomorrow, the king is going to become the first british monarch in history to address the French Senate. State banquets. It also looks like quite a menu that theyre to going be tucking into delivered by some very successful french chefs. Very successful french chefs. Yeah, this is certainly theyve certainly pulled off, pulled out even all the stops for this this state visit to france. Of course , it was pretty france. Of course, it was pretty embarrassing for the french government six months ago, where very, very last minute they had to postpone this state visit. It to postpone this state visit. It was meant to be the kings first state visit as a sovereign. However, he then went on to berlin and hamburg, the king and queen and that turned out to be an incredibly successful all state visit for the king. And queen, but also for the german and British Governments as well. From my understanding, following that state visit to germany, the relationship really has strengthened between those two nations. And no doubt with all this pomp and ceremony that were seeing with a magnificent banquet versailles , president banquet at versailles, president macron government are macron and his government are hoping same thing is going hoping the same thing is going to happen state visit of to happen post state visit of the king and queen. But of course, its such a history. The palace of versailles , isnt it, palace of versailles, isnt it, with obviously the french monarchs of the past. So lets hope that the king and queen gets a slightly better welcome than they did in the 1700s. Than they did in the 1700s. And tell us about prince charless oh, sorry, im still doing this months on, King Charless grasp of french, because he is he is very good linguist, isnt he . Linguist, isnt he . Yeah, he absolutely is. And he is expected to deliver a few words at the state banquet tonight at the palace of versailles. And we expect him versailles. And we expect him also to address the french lawmakers at the senate tomorrow, partly in french as well, although i suspect some engush well, although i suspect some english will also be involved there. Its a very similar theme to what we saw in germany when he addressed the german bundestag. He spoke to german lawmakers in german. And i lawmakers in german. And i think, you know, he is being hosted here in france. Its only right, perhaps he feels that he should speak at least some parts in french. He is, in fact, pretty good in french. As you said, he is pretty fluent, as was his mother, Queen Elizabeth ii. So clearly runs in the family, needing to learn a foreign language. Cameron, i just want to remind viewers and listeners who are just joining us, just show show the pictures to our viewers are just joining us, just show sh kingie pictures to our viewers are just joining us, just show sh King Charleses to our viewers are just joining us, just show sh king charles and our viewers are just joining us, just show sh king charles and queen awers of king charles and Queen Camilla, who arrived at orly airport in paris just a few minutes ago. Maybe you can tell us a little bit more about the welcome they did receive as Queen Camilla. Very gingerly made her way down the steps as she disembarked, because its a its pretty windy there, cameron, isnt it just like it is here today . Is here today . Yes, it is pretty windy. Is here today . Yes, it is pretty windy. Im pretty sheltered where i am in paris. But i pretty sheltered where i am in paris. But i think at the airport its a bit exposed, isnt it . So, yes, theyre being blown about a bit. However, they obviously disembarked the aircraft majesties aircraft and their majesties were by the french prime were greeted by the french Prime Minister, ms elizabeth borne, on behalf the french president behalf of the french president and government. The and the french government. The king and queen were also met by his majestys ambassador to france. Her excellency dame her excellency, Dame Menna Rawlings and the french ambassador to the United Kingdom as well. That was United Kingdom as well. That was at the foot of the aircraft stairs. And then there was also a guard of honour formed of one officer and 20 guardsmen of the forgive me for the pronunciation , but the guard republican will. And they lined their majesties routes from the planes and then theyll be getting into a car and travelling here to central paris, to the arc de triomphe for the ceremonial welcome. As i said, incredibly shows the said, incredibly rare shows the importance that the french government and the British GovernmentBritish Government and the british monarchy on monarchy are putting on this trip. President macron and trip. And president macron and indeed his wife will be here to greet them alongside many, many be Armed Service personnel, french Armed Service personnel. French Armed Service personnel. Okay. Royal correspondent Cameron Walker, we will return to you. Thank you very much. I did just spot there the foreign secretary, James Cleverly, and his wife. Hes clearly staying well out of the net zero row today because as it is causing quite a rumpus and this is what we are talking about now because Prime Minister rishi sunak has announced review into the announced a review into the governments controversial net zero agenda, including proposals to delay the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and phasing out the installation of new gas boilers by five years, putting it back to 2035. Whilst the Prime Minister said he remained committed to the 2050 net zero target and received support from some members of his party, other conservative mps expressed outrage at the plans, with possible rumours of no confidence letters if the plans come to fruition. Well gb news Political EditorChristopher Hope joins us now live from downing street. Christopher a significant moment in rishis premiership here, quite a departure from their 2050 targets of net zero. How do you think this will play out with the public and also the second point is this like a new brexit, it seems to be dividing the conservative party right down the middle , quite certainly. Martin rishi sunak has ripped off the plaster of unity that has been holding his Party Together since he became leader in those rather sort of strange , tortuous times back in october last year. Its a big deal. What hes doing today. I would argue its the most biggest political gamble hes taken his gamble hes taken of his premiership because its so divisive. Zac divisive. Weve got Zac Goldsmith, borisjohnson divisive. Weve got Zac Goldsmith, Boris Johnson ally, goldsmith, a Boris Johnson ally, tweeting today that hes justifying why he resigned from the government a few weeks ago and saying need election and saying we need an election now. Got elements of this now. Weve got elements of this announcement leaked to the bbc last night. Weve got the agenda last night. Weve got the agenda purported of the actual Cabinet Meeting thats just taking place by Conference Call to sign off on these plans leaked to another journalist at lunchtime. We journalist at lunchtime. We havent seen this this degree of an unstable government since the back end of Boris Johnson. I back end of Boris Johnson. I think thats a worry for sunak. Hell hope, though, that he can get his messages right and get the right of the party. The right wing of the party, united behind his plans. And thats where hes hoping where thats what hes hoping for afternoon gives for this afternoon when he gives this press conference at 430 in the behind me. The building behind me. You might expect. But, as you might expect. But, chris, labour party has chris, the labour party has jumped on this , blaming rishi jumped on this, blaming rishi sunaks expected announcement today on the influence of liz truss and what she said on monday. I mean, surely she doesnt hold much sway. Yeah doesnt hold much sway. Yeah does she . I dont. I dont. I think, i think thats a thats a wrong reading of tory party politics. If i can be so bold as to say that about the labour party. I mean no, that isnt the case. But theres no question that this really is where maybe mr sunak might be happier anyway, his happier anyway, with his own politics hes concerned politics because hes concerned about too far ahead of about going too far ahead of where people are. Theres a cost of living crisis going on. Of course, we seen falling course, we have seen falling inflation, but up by 6. 7 inflation, but still up by 6. 7 inflation, but still up by 6. 7 in the cpi index in august. So thats good news. But of course, they want to try and find a way to take the country with them. And thats what theyve looked at. That result in the ulez by election, the uxbridge by election, the uxbridge by election, which was defined by election, which was defined by ulez in by that ulez ulez issue in greater london. And the tories are clearly thinking if can are clearly thinking if they can try drive wedge over the try and drive a wedge over the issue of green politics with laboun issue of green politics with labour, they might hang to labour, they might hang on to more the next election. More seats in the next election. I the Election Campaign i mean, the Election Campaign really started today. Martin really has started today. Martin and yeah, absolutely, chris. This is the key point. This will be divisive in those lib liberal democrat tory seats. But this is a red wall pledge, isnt it . This is the cost of living. It . This is the cost of living. This is what it means for the pound and the pence in your pocket. The tories must have taken on this and it must taken advice on this and it must be must know its going to be they must know its going to land well with the hard working classes. Thats right. Its definitely what they call a wedge issue, isnt it, with with the left and mr sunak recognises, i mean hes been saying repeatedly he told at saying repeatedly he told us at the days ago how the g 2010 days ago how important is to cut inflation important it is to cut inflation and like tax cut for and thats like a tax cut for those on the lowest incomes because inflation because of course inflation affects everyone regardless of means. Why he gets means. And thats why he gets that. Obviously aware means. And thats why he gets th. His obviously aware means. And thats why he gets th. His own obviously aware means. And thats why he gets th. His own privilege,1sly aware means. And thats why he gets th. His own privilege, his aware means. And thats why he gets th. His own privilege, his own; of his own privilege, his own. Hes worked hard for his fortune in part. So recognises that in part. So he recognises that hes to deliver hes trying to deliver for people and people in the red wall and thats where hes weakest because, of that because, of course, that reshuffle weeks ago when reshuffle a few weeks ago when ben wallace was replaced by three from south of three people from the south of england top ministerial england in his top Ministerial Team problem hes team is a problem for him. Hes got and reach out to the got to try and reach out to the seats that Boris Johnson won and show them cares them too. Okay, chris, thanks for all the latest live from downing street monumental day. Street on this monumental day. Reaction, theres plenty of reaction, including angry one including quite an angry one from some businesses. Energy from some businesses. Energy giant has joined the giant e. On has joined the criticism, saying the delay risks condemning people to many more years of living in cold and draughty homes that are expensive to heat in cities clogged with dirty air from fossil fuels. And that net zero is an opportunity to transform our economy and the lives of people across the country and the government needs to think again before abandoning our climate commitments for this decade. Fascinating stuff. Well with us now is michaela kendall, ceo of adalyn. Welcome to the live of adalyn. Welcome to the live desk. Of adalyn. Welcome to the live desk. So what do you of adalyn. Welcome to the live desk. So what do you make of this announcement . A seeming u turn , a rollback on 2015, net u turn, a rollback on 2015, net zero policies. What do you make of it . Of it . Well, net zero, 2050 goals are essential to meet our climate commitments and to stabilise global temperatures. Stabilise global temperatures. Weve all been seeing these catastrophic weather events recently , and we understand that recently, and we understand that this is necessary. So to recently, and we understand that this is necessary. So to row this is necessary. So to row back on these this legislation. Now, it seems out of step. Now, it seems out of step. Absolutely. With the rest of the world. We new york are currently having their new york climate week and theyre announcing accelerated policies. Theyre accelerated policies. Theyre not rolling back business as is themselves. Ian youve just mentioned, but also ford have said that they need ambition , said that they need ambition, they need commitment and consistency. And businesses consistency. And businesses require that to make their own plans going forward. So if there was some good plans in place , it was some good plans in place, it shouldnt cost extra money. It shouldnt cost extra money. It should actually be saving people money. We should explain, michaela, that your company is a fuel cell company. Special analysing in hydrogen, isnt it . Youre based hydrogen, isnt it . Youre based youre based in birmingham. What do you think of the argument that the timing on this is so wrong , though people are arent wrong, though people are arent just going to be able to afford to go electric and actually delaying this ban is only falling in with what the eu are doing anyway. The eu is saying its to going be 2035. Yes , the uk has positioned yes, the uk has positioned itself as a leader in net zero policy. So if you are a leader in net zero policy, you should be ahead of others at least. And be ahead of others at least. And this if this brings us back in line with the eu, then then were not leading, are we . So so i think theres got to be some consistency in the messaging around the policies in terms of cost of living crisis. Youre absolutely right. People are absolutely right. People are facing economic challenges like never before. And i think that never before. And i think that Everybody Needs to tighten their belts. But that again , goes back belts. But that again, goes back to planning. If you can plan well, you should be saving money. And i think what this policy illustrates is a failure of planning to electrify vehicles, for example , where vehicles, for example, where infrastructure is not working correctly as it is in other countries. And hydrogen , weve countries. And hydrogen, weve actually got a Hydrogen Strategy that was brought in by Kwasi Kwarteng in august 2021, but that saw a reduction in the availability of hydrogen for refuelling vehicles. So there has to be consistency in the messaging and the policy making. Thats a key thing. But also you need to plan adequately and manage systems properly in order to deliver net zero policies in reality, and perhaps the government have realised that well , mikaela, government have realised that well, mikaela, perhaps the government have also realised Something Else and that is net zero proving to be incredibly zero is proving to be incredibly expensive for the average person in the street. Scrapping cars, scrapping boilers. Suddenly its hammering home and in fact the governments own climate Committee Report in 2022 said the net cost of net zero by 2050 is £1. 4 trillion, which adds up to five grand a year every year for every British Household until 2050. So maybe is this a moment of the morality of net zero facing the money . So investments into Green Infrastructure are absolutely critical. Theyre not an option. So thats an absolute essential for society. As i said, Climate Change is an acknowledged and scientifically credible activity. We know that this is happening. We need to do something about it. Investments into other infrastructures are still ongoing. So into fossil fuels and into other road infrastructure. For example. So infrastructure. For example. So these this is not necessarily an additional cost. This is a different cost. Youre making a political decision on what to invest in and there are alternatives. And i think overall, Environmental Policies should be conserving resource and therefore should be cheaper. They should not be more expensive. So it depends on how expensive. So it depends on how you present the numbers. Okay, michaela. Kendall, ceo okay, michaela. Kendall, ceo of andy lound, really good to get your thoughts this afternoon. Thanks for talking to us on gb news. Yeah. Now next door, the chancellor says the is chancellor says the plan is working as inflation falls to 6. 7. The drop has come as something of a shock. Many expected the figure to increase due to a sharp rise in average fuel prices for drivers. Unexpected easing has put the unexpected easing has put pressure the bank of england pressure on the bank of england to rates in to pause Interest Rates in tomorrows decision. Well, lets get some expert analysis with our economics and Business EditorLiam Halligan with on the money. Inflation is still too money. Inflation is still too high, but our plan is working. So say rishi sunak and jeremy hunt. Are the tories delighted hunt. Are the tories delighted that inflation has fallen today against expectations . Lets have against expectations . Lets have a look at some of the numbers here. In july , we had 6. 8 here. In july, we had 6. 8 inflation. It was expected to go up in august because there were so many fuel price rises , petrol so many fuel price rises, petrol and diesel. But inflation in august actually came to. Down august actually came to. Down 6. 7. Internationally, the uk is still pretty high when it comes to inflation. We have inflation of 6. 7. The eurozone has 5. 2 and america has 3. 7. And as all shoppers know, despite this fall in headline inflation, food Price Inflation is still sky high. In july, a basket of food would have cost you 14. 6 more than july 2022. In august, that number went down, but only slightly to 13. 6. Food prices still driving inflation. Core inflation, though, is coming down. Whats core inflation . Its inflation. When you take out food and energy. So economists can see whats really going on, particularly with wage bargaining and core inflation fell sharply in august, down from 6. 9 to 6. 2. Another really good sign is producer Price Inflation. Whats that . Producer pnces. Inflation. Whats that . Producer prices. Those are the costs of prices. Those are the costs of the inputs that firms need when they produce the goods and services that they then sell us. Producer Price Inflation is now negative. That means producer negative. That means producer input prices are coming down. They were down 3. 2 during the year to july and 2. 3 during the year to july and 2. 3 during the year to july and 2. 3 during the year to august. Year to july and 2. 3 during the year to august. And that bodes year to august. And that bodes well for inflation to fall more in the future. The bank of in the future. The bank of england will tomorrow meet to decide what happens with Interest Rates since december 2021, weve seen 14 successive rate rises from 0. 1. All the way to 5. 25. Now as mortgage holders know, and those with personal loans, it strikes me that even though inflation has fallen unexpectedly today, that the bank of england will still raise Interest Rates at midday tomorrow, though this may be the last rise. Lets hope so. Before i go, a warning and that warning is the oil price. The oil price has gone up from 70 a barrel at the beginning of june to 95 a barrel today. More than a 30 barrel today. More than a 30 rise in a really short space of time. Thats why petrol and diesel costs are going up on the forecourts. If this opec induced price rise, the opec exporters cartel working with russia to deliberately constrain oil suppues deliberately constrain oil supplies on Global Markets , this supplies on Global Markets, this if it continues, then bringing inflation down will be a problem. But in some we are still an inflation nation in the number is falling. Still an inflation nation in the number is falling. The cost of number is falling. The cost of living crisis is by no means oven living crisis is by no means over, but maybe theres an end in sight. At oh well, thats in sight. At oh well, thats good, isnt it, to end on an optimistic note, liam, thank you very much. Lets go straight to paris, where king charles and Queen Camilla have landed at orly airport and they are now on their way to the arc de triomphe at the start of their three day state visit to france. Theyre going to be joining their hosts, president Emmanuel Macron and his wife, brigitte, for a ceremony of remembrance and wreath laying at the arc de triomphe right there in the heart of paris. King charles will be invited by the president to symbolically light the monuments eternal flame which burns in memory of those who died in the first and Second World Wars. And also that just arriving now, the royal motorcade. And its been quite a week for british and french ships. Of course, keir starmer was there yesterday. Macron greeting him. Yesterday. Macron greeting him. James cleverly greeted charles, the first person. He shook hands with when he got off the royal plane. Shown theres a political element to all of this that expected to have a National Assembly will gather to hear the kings speech tomorrow in french, which is further impressive and cementing the relationship. But french president Emmanuel Macron appears to be very, very fond of king charles. On twitter, he issued a lovely welcome ahead of the king and queens arrivals saying you visited as a prince. You return as a king. Your majesty, welcome. And that was, of course, in reference to when king charles was last in france, because as him and Queen Camilla were supposed to do this state visit back in the spring and it had to be delayed because of all that violence and rioting over Pension Reforms. And so now this Pension Reforms. And so now this is the three day state visit around the corner. They are arriving, making their way up to the arc de triomphe to be greeted by president macron and his wife , brigitte. His wife, brigitte. It looks like the royal motorcade has just rounded the corner on that hill, historic, magnificent boulevard up to the arc de triomphe. Normally, of arc de triomphe. Normally, of course, thats packed full of traffic. Its amazing to see it traffic. Its amazing to see it so quiet for this state visit rolling through and these are the kind of things that i think people love about the french and the british. We, of course, have that bond of history from world wars. The Second World War and the laying of the wreaths today will will be significant in that to remember those who fell together in the defence of liberty. Absolutely. And what we understand is going to be happening very shortly is that once the president has greeted the king and queen, the National Anthem will be played or anthem , i should say. Yes, thats right. Both anthems and then the king will review the regimental band of the Garde Republicaine followed by the French Colour Party before inspecting the tri Service Guard of honour. And you can see that ceremonial welcome that they are getting as they make their way down to the arc de triomphe. And ive got ive got all my eyes on the flags flying on the royal cars there, because when the king and queen exited the plane, they had the Royal Standard and the french flag side by side, which i thought was wonderful. Itd be great to was wonderful. Itd be great to see that. Also on the royal cavalcade there, this it looks brilliant, isnt it . This this is the sort of thing that makes you feel really proud to be british. Look at it. Its wonderful. Whats also lovely about this and poignant that about this and poignant is that the triomphe was the the arc de triomphe was the location the ceremonial location for the ceremonial arrival of Queen Elizabeth ii. And the late Queen Elizabeth ii for her final state visit to france nine, nine years ago. And the king very shortly will be ianed the king very shortly will be invited by the president to light the eternal flame at the arc de triomphe, which burns in memory of those who perished in the first and Second World Wars. Lets just listen in, if we. Lets just listen in, if we. Can, to okay. I thought there was going to be a bit more than that. Maybe. Maybe there will be very, very shortly. We are expecting the National Anthems to be played in the next few moments. Our royal correspondent Cameron Walker is there. We will moments. Our royal correspondent carspeakinglker is there. We will moments. Our royal correspondent carspeaking to r is there. We will moments. Our royal correspondent carspeaking to him there. We will moments. Our royal correspondent carspeaking to him very. We will moments. Our royal correspondent carspeaking to him very shortly ll be speaking to him very shortly. But this the start of a. But this is the start of a three day state visit by king charles and Queen Camilla to france just a day after the labour leader, sir keir starmer. Perhaps Prime Minister in waiting the day after he departed. Yeah, and theres been lots of talk about the political all bond between the two nations and macron has been has to be sad fatty frosty to britain since brexit. These relationships though are bigger than politics, of course, although politics is definitely on the agenda. Not with the king, of course, but the back channels there. We saw James Cleverly pip, the foreign secretary. So no doubt this is this is not just a royal visit. Its a kind of cementing of the franco british relationships. So its fantastic to see the crowd. Theyre all standing pit, which would seem to mean the arrival is imminent. And of course , this this is and of course, this this is soft diplomacy thats happening here. It is very powerful soft diplomacy because we know there is a lot of tension at the moment when it comes to dealing with the migrants, the thousands of migrants that are continuing to cross the channel in small boats. France has a slight , boats. France has a slight, slightly different way of deaung slightly different way of dealing with it compared to us a slightly different view on how to do it. And we dont seem to really be very cohesive with the french in how to tackle this. Yeah, i mean, theres been half £1 billion of money given by the British Government to the french to help stem that tide of dinghies the dinghies coming over the channel. But nevertheless, the political conversation has become somewhat fractured due to the heated nature of that debate. Here comes James Cleverly with his wife now. So the initial party, the royal party, is arriving. The diplomats are arriving. The diplomats are arriving. The diplomats are arriving first. Of course, thats normal procedure and would expect the royals to be behind them. But theyre getting the full bells and whistles. Theyre taking the seat. Theyre on the row in anticipation on the front row in anticipation of the king and queen pip arriving shortly. Yes , king charles and queen yes, king charles and Queen Camilla at the start of their postponed three day state visit to france. It was due to take place back in march , march. But place back in march, march. But rioting over Pension Reforms prevented that. President prevented that. President macron, we havent caught a glimpse of him yet, have we . I dont think no, i dont think president macron and the first lady, brigitte , will be there to lady, brigitte, will be there to greet the king and queen who not long ago disembarked their plane at orly airport. There is going to be a ceremony at the arc de triomphe, which is where we are now. And then theres going to now. And then theres going to be a very lavish state banquet tonight. Yeah. And then i know i keep saying this, but i just find it really impressive. The king is expected to deliver a speech in french. Hes very polished in his linguistic skills. Hes got a lot of time to practise of course. And also theres going to be a delegation to bordeaux , to be a delegation to bordeaux, and thats believed to be on friday to an organic vineyard. There to celebrate the countrys connection , as in terms of connection, as in terms of industry and culture. So not just a visit to paris , but also just a visit to paris, but also to the magnificent city of bordeaux , the king queen. Bordeaux, the king and queen. Later this afternoon will be visiting the elysee palace for an audience with president and madame macron. They will be greeted in the courtyard and then they will sit down for talks and then there will be that state banquet tonight. And that state banquet tonight. And i had a quick look at the menu. Cameron will be able to tell us a little bit more about this. But but the menu has been designed and all thought out by some very prominent french chefs. Yeah and its always a case of showcasing a nations cuisine. And the french are, of course, famed for that magnificent sights there. But of a giant tricolour or french flag billowing in the arc de triomphe that stirs the soul. Of course , that stirs the soul. Of course, the size of many historic moments during world war ii became a significant moment when paris fell to the and then was retaken. And this is where retaken. And this is where liberty began on the body of the european continent. After that historic landing on the normandy beaches. And the motorcade contains king charles and Queen Camilla is now making its way down where there is quite a gathering waiting, including president macron. And he and the king will be symbolically lighting the monuments eternal flame , which monuments eternal flame, which burns in memory of those who died in the first and Second World Wars. Afterwards. They world wars. Afterwards. They will be going down the Champs Elysees towards the elysee palace, the president s official residence is, of course, where charles and king charles are. Mr macron will sit down for talks and then tonight, the king and queen are the guests of honour at a very grand black tie state banquet hosted by mr and mrs. Macron in the splendid palace of versailles hall of mirrors. And as we keep saying this, this visit was meant to take place in march, but those protests over the pensions cause huge social unrest, including on the precise streets were looking at now. Pip. So what a difference a few months make vehicles were set fire to the police lost control and so understandably, the state visit was pushed back. And this time around, everything is in order. It looks wonderful. This looks like are they British Police escorts are there ahead of the royal motorcade . Yes, it it looks like it, although it is quite difficult to tell at the moment. But this this is such a big visit because, of course , soft because, of course, soft diplomacy is partly what its all about. So the government will be watching closely. Indeed a senior official from the Foreign Office has described britains ties with france as an absolutely massive relationship. Both government to government and people, to people. They said its what we call a full spectrum relationship , covering spectrum relationship, covering defence, trade and migration and sustainability and working together on the environment with each other and with the world. Thats according to a Foreign Office official there. In terms of ego, its got the french flag flying. Flying. So this maybe this is macron. Can we cut to camera and walker as Cameron Walker available to talk us through the latest. Are you there, cameron . Hello i am martin high, the president of france, Emmanuel Macron, and his wife have arrived at the arc de triomphe. And this day for the first state visit to france of the king and queen is all about ceremony. Pomp and pageantry. And its particularly a poignant that they are starting their visits at the arc de triomphe because it was in 2014 that her late majesty Queen Elizabeth. The second was welcomed in an official ceremony at the arc de triomphe in 2014. For her last state visit to france. Their majesties are currently en route from orly airport in paris to the arc de triomphe here, where the arc de triomphe here, where the wreath is going to be laid on the kings behalf. And president macrons behalf as well. And theyll be paying well. And theyll be paying tribute to the soldiers, both british and french, who fell dunng british and french, who fell during the first and the Second World War years. Foreign secretary James Cleverly is here as well. He is hotfooted it from new york. And the 78th general United Nations general assembly. And from from speaking to people inside the Foreign Office, from my understanding, its very its seen as very important this french and british relationship and the strengthening of ties between the two nations and that power of soft diplomacy that comes with the british monarchy using a state visit such as this to really strengthen those ties. We saw germany six months ago saw it in germany six months ago and the British Government and the french government, it appears, exactly the appears, wants to exactly the same thing with this relationship, particularly in a post brexit world. This state visit has been postponed. It was postponed from six months ago. It was meant to take place six months ago, but because of those riots over french Pension Reforms, very last minute , the reforms, very last minute, the french government requested that it was postponed. Particularly embarrassing. But of course now it happening and the king and it is happening and the king and queen have arrived in paris and will be arriving shortly at the arc de triomphe. Arc de triomphe. Also particularly whats also particularly lovely about this. This event that were looking at now, this this welcome at the arc de triomphe is that it mirrors the ceremony that happened during the late Queen Elizabeths final state visit to france nine years ago. Cameron the chris yeah , it ago. Cameron the chris yeah, it certainly is. And the king is expected to beianed and the king is expected to be invited to light the eternal flame, which commemorates the soldiers of the first and Second World Wars. But something that the king will be doing tomorrow at the French Senate is something that his mother, Queen Elizabeth ii, did not do. And he will be addressing french lawmakers inside the senate, becoming the first british monarch to do so. But a monarch to do so. But a similarity with his mother, of course, is that they both speak fluent french and king charles evenis fluent french and king charles even is expected to address french lawmakers in french at the at the French Senate tomorrow. And indeed during his words at the state banquet at the palace of versailles later on today, we are expecting the arrival of his majesty, the king and Queen Camilla, very shortly at the arc de triomphe. As at the arc de triomphe. As i said, a wreath is also going to be laid at the tomb of the unknown soldier here at the arc de triomphe with president macron. It is very rare that the french president s would invite a foreign head of to state receive this official ceremonial welcome at such a famous landmark here in paris. Perhaps showing just how seriously the french and British Governments weve lost, weve lost cameron there, but were also joined by esteemed royal commentator michael cole. Royal commentator michael cole. Michael, a beautiful moment here of charles visit in france. How significant is this , would. How significant is this, would you say, michael . You say, michael . You cannot exaggerate the importance of this moment. You cannot exaggerate the importance of this moment. State importance of this moment. State visits by the royal family, by the king. Are very big medicine in royal circles. In 1904, the in royal circles. In 1904, the entente cordiale, which is the bedrock of our relations with the french republic , was signed the french republic, was signed and it was signed at a time after decades of enmity between france and britain, we almost went to war over the fashoda incident in 1898. But six years later we signed the entente cordiale , which was cemented by cordiale, which was cemented by the kings great great grandfather, edward the seventh, kissing the hand of a famous french actress and saying, madam, you are as beautiful as france itself. Well, that sold france itself. Well, that sold the british monarchy to the french people and that entente cordiale saw us through two world wars fighting side by side with the french and of course, the hundreds of thousands of frenchmen and hundreds of thousands of british and irish people who were killed in those two world wars will be honoured today at the arc de triomphe. At the top of the Champs Elysees , the top of the Champs Elysees, which is where were looking at the kings limousine, rolls royce , royce coming to a michael bentley. Michael apologies for jumping in. We are just seeing king charles and Queen Camilla are about to exit their their car to be welcomed by the president. Be welcomed by the president. The royal roller. I like that. Cameron you are there as Queen Camilla and the king emerge. I camilla and the king emerge. I think. Think. All right. All right. Yes. And you can just see them there on your screens being greeted by president macron of france and his wife. Have former welcome here at the arc de triomphe. Its a ceremonial arrival, a very rare one, which Queen Elizabeth ii is the late Queen Elizabeth ii is the late Queen Elizabeth. The second did in 2014, her final state visit. The king will be invited by president macron. You can just president macron. You can just see them there wandering , see them there wandering, walking towards the arc de triomphe. Hell be invited to symbolically light the eternal flame , which burns in memory of flame, which burns in memory of those who perished in the first and Second World Wars. Were and Second World Wars. Were expecting the National Anthem to be played and the king and president macron will review the regimental band of the garde republican and followed by the french coloured party before inspecting the tri Service Guard of honour and his majesty is just coming into my view now, alongside president macron. It looks like they are just about to inspect those soldiers. As i said , theyre going to be said, theyre going to be reviewing the regimental band, which youll probably be able to hear of the guard republican follows by the French Colour Party and the tri Service Guard of honour. It looks like the king and president macron are exchanging some pretty warm words. They look pretty friendly towards each other. Its unclear if they are speaking in french or english, but of course, we do know that the king does speak fluent french. So here they are just going up to the regimental bands of the guard republic , the bands of the guard republic, the guard, republican referendum inspecting those soldiers follows by the French Colour Party. And here is the national party. And here is the National Anthem. Anthem. We are still your friends. You can hear the. British you can hear the. British National Anthem being played in this moment for their arrive. This moment for their arrive. All the kwasi have explored this. The visit will last until this. The visit will last until friday. Um, when they sweynheim the tri Service Guard of honour consists of eight Half Companies each of the army. Oh, we can just hear the french National Anthem now. But each of the army Half Companies will be provided by regiments with a particular affiliation to a british regiment. But under the bonds of friendship , the the bonds of friendship, the twinning arrangements established between the french and british armies again , its and british armies again, its that theme of collaboration in strengthening friendship , the strengthening friendship, the power of soft diplomacy that the british monarchy has. This is the pomp and pageantry in action. Yes, but its also to friendly nations, very close nafions friendly nations, very close nations , strengthening their nations, strengthening their bonds, particularly in the quite unsettled world with the war in eastern europe, post brexit , of eastern europe, post brexit, of course. But it looks like now france and britains relationship is going very strong indeed, aided by his majesty the king. Because dont forget , the king and the queen forget, the king and the queen choose to go on these state visits on the advice of the Foreign Office. Who make the political diplomat make decisions. And we have the decisions. And we have the foreign secretary, James Cleverly observing all of this as well. Cameron there is plenty of security there. But as martin touched on earlier, no crowds. A big media contingent. But its very strange, not to see lots of people with watching this spectacle. Yet security is spectacle. Yet security is incredibly tight here. It took us as the media a very long time to get through to this position where we are in fact, speaking to other media whove covered this, the royal beat a lot longer than i have. They said never seen they said theyd never seen anything it. And the crowds anything like it. And the crowds are being kept way back at and will be, i think, unlikely to be able to see any of it other than the big screens. There have been a few big screens which have been put up on the roads surrounding the arc de triomphe as a huge one right next to the archway, but perhaps disappointing for the crowds. But of course, you have to remember that six months ago, this visit had to be this state visit had to be postponed because of the riots over the french Pension Reforms and the king and queen were meant to visit at the bordeaux town hall, and thats actually ended up in flames because of those riots. So it just shows how seriously the French Security services are taking this visit. They really want it to go without a hitch because it was quite embarrassing for the french government to having to postpone it such last minute, and particularly because of a german visit, was such a german state visit, was such a success. The french government are to want to make are really going to want to make this visit successful, if not this visit as successful, if not more than the german more successful, than the german one. The more successful, than the german one. The king, the king, and president macron just walked past the position where i am in. They are inspecting this tri service of honour at the Service Guard of honour at the moment, so that should be what youre seeing on your screens now. And camilla, i wonder how much of this is about the optics for macron himself. He was recently booed at a french rugby match and is the keeping of the crowds away to try and limit the opportunity for people to protest , not for people to protest, not against the royals, as we saw at the coronation in london, the risk of that, but to protest against macron himself. So for against macron himself. So for that reason, security is incredibly tight to ensure theres no domestic embarrassment in paris. Well, we can only speculate , well, we can only speculate, cant we . Of course, the king has come here as a guest of president s macron. But i think president s macron. But i think it is pretty interesting that there doesnt seem to be any members of the public allowed anywhere near it. What will be interesting in the interesting is in the engagements over the next three days, which is how this days, which is how long this state visit lasting , when state visit is lasting, when president not president macron is not accompanying the king. If it is quite as tight security, i suspect security is going to be pretty tight. I know there have been a few last minute changes for security concerns, but of course, they want this first ceremony. Official welcome. Ceremony. Official welcome. Arguably one of the most important bits to go without a hitch. The king we can see hitch. The king we can see pictures. President macron of president macron, king charles walking together across the square. Together across the square. Theyre having a good old chat pass all the regimental flags of those assembled to witness this. A majestic sight. A majestic sight. Yes, this is the king and president macron symbolically rekindling or about to rekindle the eternal flame. In a wreath the eternal flame. In a wreath of french and british colours is being laid on behalf of the king and president macron by two soldiers at the tomb of the unknown soldier underneath the arc de triomphe, and perhaps a moment of silence and reflection for those who lost their lives dunng for those who lost their lives during the first and Second World Wars. World wars. President macron gesturing to his majesty the king. There meeting the dignitaries and those specially invited guests. Those specially invited guests. And as we watch , i believe, and as we watch, i believe, rekindling the eternal flame , rekindling the eternal flame, cameron as we watch these pictures, you can you can tell that this this state visit really does mean something for president macron. Hes rolled president macron. Hes rolled out all the stops for this as yeah , he really has. Yeah, he really has. As i said, its incredibly rare for a for the french president to invite a visiting head of states to have this big ceremonial welcome at the arc de triomphe. It doesnt happen very often. The kings mother , the often. The kings mother, the late Queen Elizabeth ii receive leaves the same thing in 2014. But i think it just shows how important president macron and his government are taking this visit of his majesty, the king and queen. En yeah, and that eternal flame there lit cameron a wonderful reminder of the historic bond between these two nafions historic bond between these two nations cemented in unfortunate circumstances. Of course , in circumstances. Of course, in war. But a wonderful , wonderful war. But a wonderful, wonderful sight. Sight. It certainly is. I mean , this it certainly is. I mean, this is the this is the power of soft diplomacy in picture form. I diplomacy in picture form. I would argue this is the french and british citizens, people , and british citizens, people, governments and heads of state are strengthening ties. And are strengthening ties. And following this ceremonial welcome at the arc de triomphe , welcome at the arc de triomphe, perhaps therell be lost. Cameron there again. Cameron there again. Cameron there again. It looks like weve lost Cameron Walker, but we do still have our royal commentator, michael cole. Michael, we were michael cole. Michael, we were just reflecting on the power of soft diplomacy. And this will be a very welcome sight or this is a very welcome sight or this is a welcome sight, isnt it, a very welcome sight or this is a welcome sight, isnt it , for a welcome sight, isnt it, for people when you see that thats very symbolic and its very real. And youll notice that the king is wearing the emblem of the legion dhonneur in his left lapel, along with a cornflower from england. And likewise, the president macron there, also the insignia of the legion dhonneur, the every single royal visit, state visit. This was supposed to be the first state visit out of the new kings reign. And well, its come a little bit later, but its no less significant. Its its no less significant. Its very important because there are nearest neighbours and our allies. Since the entente cordiale of 1904, and its worth remembering that the kings this kings grandmother, the queen mother, who we all remember, she went on a state visit in 1938. War clouds were gathering. We needed french support. We wanted to show our support. And she to show our support. And she went with king george the sixth, even though six days before the visit , her mother, countess of visit, her mother, countess of strathmore , died. So brilliant. Strathmore, died. So brilliant. Lee they didnt post. They postponed it for a couple of days. But then she came and they changed her wardrobe. She wore all bright, just justanid corner and smile. Michael well just listen in as as this ceremony continues. Laura first say the king. Laura first say the king. Itsjust laura first say the king. Its just wonderful seeing now. God save the king me. Here now. God save the king me. Here before the glob finale of the lord relatively. Lord relatively. Nicholas on morad tahbaz. Nicholas lord to be on Hollywood Lady companion. This is. Nicholas lord to be on Hollywood Lady companion. This is. It lady companion. This is. It divorces for to the will geddes huw thomas got ignacy be the faux pas la la la la llama. Civilian but. Faux pas la la la la llama. Civilian but. The oh, civilian but. The oh, im for the michael. The michael. We whats a beautiful sight for michael cole . The National Anthem as we heard there. And then a fly past that was the patrouille de france. That was the french red arrows paying their tribute. Ive ive heard that the National Anthem sung many times, but never quite like that. Have you ever heard a rendering of god save the king or queen like that . And of course, the masses , which celebrates the men from marseille who joined the french revolution two centuries ago and made it a success in the sense that abba le roy down with the king, the french lost their , uh, king, the french lost their, uh, their king, king louis xvi. They guillotined him at the other end of this road, the Champs Elysees on the place de la concorde. Thats where the guillotine was set up. But the french, although were a republican , a proud were a republican, a proud republican, a secular country , republican, a secular country, see, theyve never really fallen out of love monarchy. A lot out of love with monarchy. A lot of people are fascinated by the british monarchy, in particular. And here you see the conviviality , the friendship conviviality, the friendship thats going on there in the front, though, there was president Francois Hollande on the other side , as cameron the other side, as cameron mentioned , the British Foreign mentioned, the British Foreign secretary, James Cleverly keeping an eye on things. Now, keeping an eye on things. Now, the king there is meeting representatives all of them of the french Armed Services and emergency services. As far as i can see. And as you mentioned, he speaks french very well. Queen elizabeth, the late queen, our much miss queen. She was fluent in french, which was very important when it came to francophone canada , quebec and francophone canada, quebec and so on, where she spoke very well and very movingly at times. And this is big stuff. This is big medicine in the royal world to have actually stopped the traffic in the middle of paris, to close down the main boulevard for this ceremonial shows fantastic respect by president macron and his wife, brigitte , macron and his wife, brigitte, who seem to be getting on very well there with Queen Camilla later. There they are together there , going to inaugurate a new there, going to inaugurate a new literary prize for franco British Literary prize. And of course , Queen Camilla is and of course, Queen Camilla is very big on the historic power, the recuperative power of reading. How important it is for children and for ordinary people here. I think theyre showing the king perhaps signatures of very famous people whove signed. So theyre all going to signed. So theyre all going to sign on this day , this very sign on this day, this very historic day. Brigitte macron, historic day. Brigitte macron, the president there with her and of course, the two royal visitors. Theyve got a visitors. Theyve got a tremendous day ahead of them. Of course, culminating with this tremendous banquet out at versailles , built by louis the versailles, built by louis the 14th, the sun king in the in the hall of mirrors, a huge long table, 180ft long, 180 guests. So everybody gets two feet of space and theyve had a long table like this so that everybody can go home and say, i sat on the kings table because , of course they did. Whether they were very close to him or not doesnt really matter. But here you are. I think these are probably representatives of the british legion in france , british legion in france, because there are branches of the british legion , which the british legion, which represents soldiers and represents old soldiers and servicemen and they live in france. So the king is making sure, he says hello to them. And michael, you can sure, he says hello to them. And michael , you can see, and michael, you can see, michael, as we look at these these wonderful images. Oh, i these wonderful images. Oh, i know what my late grandmother would be saying. Why isnt Brigitte Macron wearing a hat. Brigitte macron wearing a hat. Well, actually, you youve made a good point, because paul , Queen Camilla, when she arrived on the aircraft, she was struggling in the very, very high wings which weve got here, holding on to her hat, holding on to her dress. The king strode down the staircase and actually think he could have gone back and helped her a little bit more because it was a bit of a struggle to keep everything in order. But as you say, what about hats these days . Well, its for the military its very good for the military industry when women wear them, but always wear them. But they dont always wear them. Do very few women do they think . Very few women couldnt cannot their couldnt cannot improve their importance, appearance importance, their appearance without wearing hat . I think without wearing a hat . I think hats good idea. And they hats are a good idea. And they add grace to any occasion. But Brigitte Macron has got fantastic style. She has real french chic. Nobody can deny french chic. Nobody can deny that. French chic. Nobody can deny that. And certainly she looks that. And certainly she looks very, very lovely today. And im sure shes wearing something from a french couturier. I wouldnt dare to say which. But shes always immaculately dressed. Dressed. Okay, michael, were going to cut back now to Cameron Walker live on the ground there at the arc de triomphe for gb news cameron, whats the latest there i well, well, we imam well, we just had that incredible surprise fly past by the equivalent of the of the red arrows here in france at breteuil, at patrol, even afiben breteuil, at patrol, even aribert different and now the king and the queen are being ianed king and the queen are being invited to meet government representatives who have gathered to witness the ceremony. You just saw the president of the committee. We invite their majesties to sign whats known as golden book. So that was as the golden book. So that was the big book they just signed underneath the arc de triomphe. Following this, you can just see on your screens now the majesties meeting representing chiefs of local veteran organisations , we believe scout organisations, we believe scout and guide organisation are also there and the British School of paris , his majesty is also going paris, his majesty is also going to be acknowledging the standard of the committee of the flame and hes going to be reviewing the front rank of the regional veterans associations. And you can hear the music , cant you . Can hear the music, cant you . The atmosphere here is electric. Were almost being drowned out by bagpipes. Its incredibly by bagpipes. Its incredibly noisy here. But as you said, of course, theres no crowd noises. There are no members of the pubuc there are no members of the public allowed anywhere near the arc de triomphe, as michael was saying, this is usually a very busy thoroughfare, a big a big roundabout, and all of that has stopped. And the public is being kept for security kept way back for security reasons. Perhaps indication reasons. Perhaps an indication as to how seriously the french government is taking this and wants it go to wants it to go well to strengthen the relationship between britain and france and to avoid any perhaps further embarrassments following the postponement of this state visit, which was meant to happen in six months or so ago. It was meant to be king charles and Queen Camillas first state visit to as the new monarch, the king as the new monarch. But of course, it had to be germany instead because of the postponements , you can just see postponements, you can just see the queen and president macron there greeting veterans, members of the Veterans Community see underneath the arc de triomphe, the regional veterans associations , as theyre associations, as theyre president macron shaking hands with a number of them, perhaps served in the Second World War. And of course, the arc de triomphe with the tomb of the unknown soldier underneath it, commemorating soldiers who did fall during the first was the king is also being accompanied by his equerry. John thompson ive seen him around as well as a number of his own staff and big entourage here who have travelled with him to paris. Again, the king looks like he is in good spirits here, about to inspect the front rank of the regional veterans associations. Regional veterans associations. Of course, this is a part of the camera accompanied by this is a part of the job cameron that king charles is of course very, very familiar with the you know, the inspections meeting, all the dignitaries hes done this many, many times. Yeah, he absolutely many times. Yeah, he absolutely has. This is his 30, 35th visit to france where hes been 35 times. But of course, this is the first time as king the queen has been nine times previously and in an official capacity. Has been nine times previously and in an official capacity. But and in an official capacity. But pomp and pageantry is what britain is all about. Usually its reserved for events in. London lost cameron there. You know, im struck by by the wondrous nature of charles greeting veterans from france. Some of whom were very elderly , some of whom were very elderly, some of whom were very elderly, some of whom were very elderly, some of whom were in wheelchairs , whom were in wheelchairs, beanng whom were in wheelchairs, bearing the union flag as a standard and some wearing poppies on their lapels. And the pipe poppies on their lapels. And the pipe pipes, the pipes playing tunes that would have been played during wartime would have been ringing out across. Played during wartime would have been ringing out across. The been ringing out across. The trenches of world war i. And of course, at the arc de triomphe here, when the forces were unhed here, when the forces were united and in peace at the end of world war ii, these these pipes have a historical significance. And its just a wonderful wonderful thing to hear. Hean michael cole, royal commentator , we can just bring commentator, we can just bring you back in when we look at these images of president macron, king charles, chad king, what message do you think it sends about the current state of anglo french relations as well . They go up and down, but those relations are forged in blood and fire for the first world war, nearly three quarters of a million british and empire troops died. They died, many of troops died. They died, many of them on the soil of france. So them on the soil of france. So the king has gone out of his way to shake hands with every single veteran who is present going into the back row, making sure everybody remembers this occasion, which im sure they will. Weve just seen the foreign secretary representing the government there and there i think you have the military equerry from the British Embassy in paris, undoubtedly. So a full turnout from the embassy. This turnout from the embassy. This is a great event for the ambassador and his staff. Its a great event for all of us because france aukus are sometimes difficult. Because france aukus are sometimes difficult. Neighbour is still our neighbour and has been our close friend and ally through two world wars since the entente cordiale was signed in 1904. By the kings great great grandfather , Arthur Edward the grandfather, Arthur Edward the seventh. This is a union there are about the same size as us in terms of population. Weve got about three times as much land. Of course. And more mountain ranges and countryside and three oceans. But theyre very close to us. And the history is there. And the king, of course, will be going down to bordeaux, going to visit an organic vineyard and of course, bordeaux and aquitaine was the last bit of france, almost the last bit of france that was personally owned by a british king. So the ties there are very, very strong. There you see the king enjoying a chat with the military personnel in there. Ultra smart, peppy. There. Ultra smart, peppy. Perhaps hes talking to her to a naval officer. Theyre all anxious to Say Something to him because hes been through every branch of the service to and doesnt. Hes got an interpreter there. I dont think he actually needs it. Hes getting on with it. And over the years, ive seen many, many members of the royal family go to the western front, to the huge memorials , front, to the huge memorials, the wonderful arch at thiepval , the wonderful arch at thiepval, which which actually rivals the arc de triomphe in its size , arc de triomphe in its size, where the names of all those british people, those men who died and whose whose graves are unknown on the west of france. Unknown on the west of france. So this is a very, very important thing. Its impossible to exaggerate the importance of the ties that bind us to france. President macron is going out of his way , patting the king on of his way, patting the king on the back there, making sure hes getting into the right place. Getting into the right place. Its very important. Theres a lot of good things are going to be happening. And im quite sure that when he goes to the National Assembly , he to address National Assembly, he to address the politicians. Im sure the king will try a few jokes and pleasantries. He did so. And the pleasantries. He did so. And the bundestag in berlin and it was a great triumph. That was a surprise to everybody that he would try that. Now, there are this man is quite clearly the commander of the guard, republican , who has put on this republican, who has put on this show today. And the king knows a show today. And the king knows a bit about ceremonial. He knows bit about ceremonial. He knows a bit about ceremonial. He knows a bit about ceremonial. He knows a bit about whats what. And i think what hes seen today has been highly impressive. Been highly impressive. Michael cole, as always , michael cole, as always, thank you. Lets rejoin our royal correspondent , cameron royal correspondent, Cameron Walker, who has also been watching paris roll out the red carpet for their majesties. Carpet for their majesties. Cameron, we just saw a very affectionate well, pat on the back, really from president macron towards king charles. Is he allowed to do that . He allowed to do that . Hes he certainly is. I think people have this theres this myth that no one is allowed to touch his majesty the king. But ihave touch his majesty the king. But i have been reliable , informed i have been reliable, informed because i remember a couple of months ago, President Biden did exactly the same thing with the king. I have been informed that the absolutely than the king is absolutely more than comfortable that sort of comfortable with that sort of intimacy and affectionate behaviour toward with other heads of states, particularly when its a friendly nation. Such as france. We can just see the king, accompanied by president Emmanuel Macron, walking back towards the cars because they are expected to travel to the elysee palace, where the king and president macron will have a meeting, an audience as a private audience, were told. Of course, he wont be straying too far into politics. Its very much to that power of soft diplomacy in action. No doubt they will be talking about this absolute spectacle. We have seen at the arc de triomphe with the gigant thick french flag and the huge ceremonial and military welcome that king charles and Queen Camilla has received here in paris with the start of their first state visit to the country weve talked about security, havent we . You can see from those pictures there in the background, theres no members of the public. They are being kept well back. Of course, this whole state visit was delayed because of those of those riots six months ago over french Pension Reforms. Were just seeing the king being introduced to two special guests who have been whove been invited to observe this ceremony, the ceremonial welcome here today , ceremonial welcome here today, royal correspondent Cameron Walker. I know you are with them every step of the way during this three day state visit. We will rejoin you. But thank you for now. Oh, merci beaucoup. For now. Oh, merci beaucoup. Yeah. And i really i really hope the press dont pick up on macron patting king charles on the back. Hes allowed to do that. I, ijust the back. Hes allowed to do that. I, i just think today, days like today are absolutely wonderful. They cement the historical resonance, know the emotional resonance of its just wonderful to hear those pipes that would have united us in war, uniting us in peace. I think that was absolutely beautiful. I really do. Beautiful. I really do. It was just magnificent by the red arrows and the french equivalent. Wonderful. Okay, we equivalent. Wonderful. Okay, we will be revisiting the king and queens state visit. But now were back to the economy because the chancellor says the plan is working as inflation falls to 6. 7, the drop has come as a bit of a shock. Many expected the figure to increase due to a sharp rise in average fuel prices for drivers. Yeah, the unexpected easing has put pressure on the bank of england to pause Interest Rates in tomorrows decision. To pause Interest Rates in tomorroletsecision. To pause Interest Rates in tomorrolets getion. To pause Interest Rates in tomorrolets get some expert and lets get some expert analysis now economics analysis now with our economics and Business EditorLiam Halligan on the money. And Business EditorLiam Halligan on the money. In halligan with on the money. In inflation is still too high, but our plan is working so say rishi sunak and jeremy hunt. The tories delighted that inflation has fallen today against expectations. Lets have against expectations. Lets have a look at some of the numbers here in july, we had 6. 8 inflation. It was expected to go up in august because there were so many fuel price rises, petrol and diesel. But inflation in august actually came to down 6. 7. Internationally, the uk is still pretty high when it comes to inflation. We have inflation of 6. 7. The eurozone has 5. 2 and america has 3. 7. And as all shoppers know, despite this fall in headline inflation, food Price Inflation is still sky high in july, a basket of food would have cost you 14. 6 more than july 2022. The bank of england will tomorrow meet to decide what happens with Interest Rates since december 2021, weve seen 14 successive rate rises from 0. 1. All the way to 5. 25. Now as mortgage holders know, and those with personal loans, it strikes me that even though inflation has fallen unexpectedly today, that the bank of england will still raise Interest Rates at midday today. Tomorrow, though, this may be the last rise. Lets hope so. Before i go, a warning and that warning is the oil price. The oil price has gone up from 70 a barrel at the beginning of june to 95 a barrel today. More than to 95 a barrel today. More than a 30 rise in a really short space of time. Thats why petrol and diesel costs are going up on the forecourts. If this opec induced price rise, the opec exporters cartel working with russia to deliberately constrain oil supplies on Global Markets if it continues , then bringing if it continues, then bringing inflation down will be a problem. But in some we are still an inflation nation. The number is falling. The cost of living crisis is by no means over , but maybe theres an end over, but maybe theres an end in sight. In sight. Well, do stay with us here on the live desk on gb news. Still plenty more to talk about. A plenty more to talk about. A historic day in the nhs. Skies, ireland. Under the clear skies, temperatures going to dip temperatures are going to dip a little they have little bit lower than they have done recent nights. Done through some recent nights. Many and cities, though, many towns and cities, though, just holding in double just about holding up in double figures through thursday morning. The morning. Then any rain in the south east clearing south east quickly clearing away. Is a brighter, away. And then it is a brighter, sunnier picture for many of us than recently. But than it has been recently. In the last few minutes, former Prime MinisterBoris Johnson. We are hearing, has really attacked what rishi sunaks expected announcement on watering down the governments net zero pledges. Now, of course, some of these pledges were introduced by Boris Johnson. And he though, is saying britain cannot afford to falter. Now or in any way lose our ambition for this country. His intervention comes as well. An almighty row quite frankly, has broken out within the government at the tories plans to scale back some of these green these green plans which includes putting back the ban on diesel and petrol cars from 2030. As bofis and petrol cars from 2030. As Boris Johnson wanted to 2035, the press conference from downing street is coming in the next couple of hours or so, but bofis next couple of hours or so, but Boris Johnson saying in a in a very clear attack on the Prime Minister, britain cannot afford to falter now or in any way lose our ambition for this country. Yeah, and weve got a debate coming up on that. Is britain right to ditch our net zero targets in about 10 or 15 minutes time . Stick around. Its going lively now. Going to get lively now. Action held joint industrial action held by Junior Doctors and by both Junior Doctors and consultants being held for consultants is being held for the first time in the history of the first time in the history of the nhs. Members of the bma are working Christmas Day cover working on a Christmas Day cover basis, meaning Emergency Care will continue to be provided. Will continue to be provided. But thousands appointments but thousands of appointments have had to rescheduled as have had to be rescheduled as well as being out today, Junior Doctors will strike tomorrow and on friday this week, whilst further joint strikes on friday this week, whilst furtherjoint strikes are further joint strikes are planned for the start of next month. Well, what does downing street have to say about all of these strikes . Lets speak to these strikes . Lets speak to our correspondent, these strikes . Lets speak to our utley, correspondent, these strikes . Lets speak to our utley, liveespondent, these strikes . Lets speak to our utley, live from dent, olivia utley, live from westminster. It feels like groundhog day. Olivia, you and i have been speaking about this since december. Here we go. £1 since december. Here we go. £1 billion to the economy lost already because of these strikes. A million extra nhs appointments cancelled. Whats appointments cancelled. Whats the latest from westminster . The latest from westminster . Well well, as you say, martin, it really does feel like groundhog day. And i think were all feeling a bit of sort of strike fatigue. No one really wants to be talking about it anymore, but that doesnt mean that the situation has got better. In situation has got any better. In fact, couple of fact, in the last couple of days, its considerably days, its got considerably worse. Today, the first time worse. Today, for the first time in history, Junior Doctors in nhs history, Junior Doctors and consultants are striking. At the time , which means that the same time, which means that the same time, which means that the nhs is only able to provide a Christmas Service. Now you might think that one day of Christmas Service doesnt matter that if look at that much, but if you look at this week of strikes , weve this full week of strikes, weve had Junior Doctors striking tomorrow and friday and we had consultants striking yesterday pay consultants striking yesterday pay 100,000 nhs appointments and surgeries will be missed. That takes us to a total of 1 million appointments missed since these strikes first started last december. Strikes first started last december. Now we strikes first started last december. Now we know that strikes first started last december. Now we know that nhs waiting lists are already very, very long. They reached a record high of 7 million earlier this year and they are still growing. There are appointments which were scheduled during the pandemic years which still havent taken place. And of course, as you say, theres a huge knock on impact on the economy. There are lots and lots of people on these nhs waiting lists out work at the lists who are out of work at the moment because they cant go back work until they get the back to work until they get the operation they need. So operation that they need. So were in were seeing a crisis in the workforce at the moment with in some in manchester, in some cities in manchester, in liverpool, in birmingham, 1 in 5 working age people are on benefits rather than in work. Part of that problem is the nhs waiting lists. So yes , were all waiting lists. So yes, were all tired of talking about the strikes, but they really, really do matter, particularly as it doesnt seem like theres going to be a breakthrough any time soon. Okay, olivia leigh, thank you for the latest from westminster. Well, joining us live now from a picket line at the Royal London Hospital is gb News National reporter theo theo chikomba. Theo, whats the mood on the ground amongst the picket lines . I dont know. Care . Well we are at the Royal London Hospital where there was a picket line here from around 11 00 and they made a lap around the hospital hall and lots of them were saying, we have been asking for pay restoration in similar to that was seen in 2009. Of course , they say its of course, they say its challenging times for nhs staff and of course they spent the day doing that. Today is one of two days. This week well see them striking and this is what the unite union member had to say to us earlier this afternoon. Again, the Health Secretary is asleep at the wheel. Hes proposals around the legislation will do nothing to get us the Staffing Levels that we need in hospitals. And the harsh reality is that often when we take action, we agree emergency Staffing Levels anyway and quite often they are better than on non strike days. So thats our message. Were taking the necessary action to make sure that there is Proper Staffing every single day of the yeah staffing every single day of the year. While the Health Secretary just wants to concentrate on on strike days. We need safe staffing every single day. Staffing every single day. And we also did speak to our doctor as well , who spoke about doctor as well, who spoke about some of the challenges that theyre having when it comes to staffing issues. And of course, pay staffing issues. And of course, pay is matched with that. And theyre saying the government havent taken them seriously enough point. And of enough to this point. And of course see them on the course, we do see them on the picket lines. Much longer picket lines. How much longer this is going to go on for, its unclear. But of course, the picket line today is sending a message the government message to the government to say change needed imminently. Change is needed imminently. Theo chikomba talking to us there. Thank you very much for there. Thank you very much for the latest from the picket lines. Now, still to come here on the live desk, were going to be revisiting paris , which is revisiting paris, which is rolling out the red carpet for king charles and Queen Camilla. And what a magnificent spectacle it has been. They are currently it has been. They are currently leaving there now to head for talks at the elysee palace with a state banquet to follow at the palace of versailles. Tonight it looks its been absolutely wonderful watching it, hasnt it . Just just whatever you think of the monarchy, just this site was magnifici at king charles, Queen Camilla arriving in paris for the start of a three day state visit. And they went state visit. And they went straight from the airport to the arc de triomphe security very, very tight at the arc de triomphe. Of course, is a complete tourist hotspot. The complete tourist hotspot. The crowds would be would be out there to greet them, but not today. Security incredibly tight as the king relit the eternal flame at the tomb of the unknown soldier before a minutes silence and then there was that wonderful fly past by the red arrows and their french counterpart. Counterpart. And at tonights bank witte, with the king and queen, there are some celebrity guests, including grant, arsene including hugh grant, arsene wenger, of course, the french manager, former model manager of arsenal, and didier drogba, the legendary football. You played legendary football. You played for chelsea and the ivory coast. Its going to be a huge banquet, lots of lavish food. But i just think today it was such a majestic sight of two countries coming together. And this this kind of bringing together of britain and france at a time, lets face it, where there have been lots of political turmoil. This kind of thing really is worth weight in gold. Worth its weight in gold. Actually got a bit you actually got a bit tearful, martin, as you were watching, watching images. Watching, watching the images. Because, you know, i did, because, you know, when i the pipes going out when i hear the pipes going out and been those d day and ive been on those d day tours, around the tours, ive been around the normandy i flew over normandy beaches, i flew over actually on a former us actually on on a on a former Us Air Force Dakota and it gets me very, very emotional when i see the veterans of britain and france bonding together in peacetime in much happier times. But those pipes would have been ringing out across the battlefields of world war i and world war ii played in wartime and now played in peace. It just and now played in peace. It just always gets me choked. It does understandably so. And there were veterans there, werent there, that were greeted by king charles. They spent quite a long time actually meeting people. Many people there were were waving union jack flags. And president macron , he kept a few paces behind the queen and king and queen, but he was also shaking hands with people. And then they made their people. And then they made their way back towards their cars. And what you are seeing now is them being escorted down the Champs Elysees by police and a troop of soldiers on horseback processing down towards the elysee palace, where they will hold talks. The king and president macron, before that state dinner. This evening. And we will, of course, bring you here on. Gb news. Lets go to here on. Gb news. Lets go to rihanna now for the latest headunes. Headlines. Thank you, pip. Good afternoon. Its 232. Your top stories from the newsroom. And as weve been hearing, the king and queen are in paris as part of a three day state visit celebrating shared history, culture and values. They invited culture and values. They invited me , the royal couple were me, the royal couple were greeted by president Emmanuel Macron and his wife at a ceremony of remembrance at the arc de triomphe. The king joins the president for a meeting at the president for a meeting at the elysee palace this afternoon , ahead of a state banquet. Later at the palace of versailles , the Prime Minister versailles, the Prime Minister will deliver a speech this afternoon. Its understood he could bring forward an announcement regarding net zero policies. Rishi sunak is expected to set out revised plans which may include weakening the phasing out of gas boilers as well as delaying a ban on new petrol and diesel cars. But the plan risks igniting a row within his own party, with former Prime MinisterBoris Johnson warning the uk cant afford to lose its ambition. Consultants and junior ambition. Consultants and Junior Doctors are holding their first ever joint strike as they continue a walkout over pay. Thousands of bma medics have stopped work at nhs hospitals across england , delaying across england, delaying operations and placing yet more pressure on Britains Health service. Junior doctors will continue their strike tomorrow and on friday. Meanwhile thousands of London Underground workers are to walk out amid a long running dispute overjob cuts and safety concerns. Welcome back to the live desk where paris is rolling out the red carpet for king charles and Queen Camilla, who have now just arrived at the elysee palace for talks. Theyve been at the arc talks. Theyve been at the arc de triomphe amid heavy security for what was a magnificent ceremony. And they are now ceremony. And they are now heading to down they have now arrived at the elysee palace for sit down talks. And then there will be a state dinner this evening. So a very quick photo call there by King Charles Queen camilla, president macron and his wife, brigitte, before theyre heading inside. We have theyre heading inside. We have we are hearing that actually the president and king charles, theyve spoken quite a number of times, especially over the last yean times, especially over the last year, but they did, of course , year, but they did, of course, meet face to face in may when the president travelled to london for the kings coronation but they do have quite a connection, we understand, over Environmental Issues. So maybe thats something that they will be discussing. But quite the welcome they have been given in france today. In fact , those environmental in fact, those Environmental Issues are a neat segway into our next item because former Prime MinisterBoris Johnson has warned we cannot afford to falter. Now or in any way lose our ambition for this country. As rishi sunak appears prepared to ditch controversial net zero commitments, he is expected to be speaking in well, less than two hours time. He says he remains committed to the 2050 net zero target, but it is causing a rift in his own party. Thats probably a bit of an understatement. The home secretary Suella Braverman has argued that the government is not going to save the planet by bankrupting britons. Other bankrupting britons. But other tories have expressed outrage at a potential betrayal of green policies and commitments. Well, joining us now for our big debate is sam richards, ceo of britain remade and a former number 10 adviser. And andrew montford, Deputy Director of net zero. Watch so this is a topic , zero. Watch so this is a topic, gentlemen, thats not only dividing the nation, its certainly divided the conservative party whats your take on this . Lets start with you, sam. You were advising in number 10 at the time when Boris Johnson, of course, made such a huge commitment to these net zero targets by 2050, presumably rishis announcement today fills you with a sense of dismay. You with a sense of dismay. So as part of our campaign, britain remade, weve been speaking to businesses right across the country and all of them want one thing. They want certainty in delivering the products that were going to need to get to net zero. And thats why youve seen such dismay from the Business Community today. Thats why youve seen ford come forward with an unprecedented statement of criticism of the government. Of criticism of the government. Thats why youve seen ian come forward with a similarly critical statement. They want critical statement. They want that certainty to get on and deliver the cheap products that will both get us to net zero, but also deliver thousands of jobs in our former industrial heartland. Places like teesside , places like the midlands. Okay, moving on to you now, andrew, Deputy Director of net zero zero. Watch presumably youre more on the side of the people of the new conservatives whove just come out and said that rishi is on the side of working people. Yeah , its become fairly yeah, its become fairly clear over the years and in particular over the last week or so that the net zero is impossible. Impossible. And weve seen the failure of the Renewables Auction just last week because and its clear that nobody is going to build wind farms or offshore wind farms in the uk any longer. The public is becoming increasingly aware that it is going to cost them a great deal of money. I was very interested in mr sunaks statement yesterday where he said that government hunts have been consistently dishonest on the costs of net zero. You can you can fool all of the people. Some of the time, but not all of the time. And people are now realising that heat pumps are going to cost them a great deal of money and are probably not going to work very well. Can already they can already see that electric are going to electric vehicles are going to cost a great of money cost them a great deal of money as well, and they are worried you can theyve been told its going to be cheap, but they can see that that just isnt the case anymore. Im quite hopeful now that mr sunak is going now that that mr sunak is going to come out and tell us what the real are. He needs to real costs are. He needs to because we cant really go forward until that has been done i andrew, is there not a dangen andrew, is there not a danger, though, that by putting this back to 2035, that actually theres going to be less production of electric cars and therefore at those prices then are less likely to be cheaper . Whereas if you wait till 2030, the prices will be so much better for people, its counterproductive. Counterproductive. Its the point is that if we go down the ev and heat pump route, thats the road to disaster. It is going to cause a lot of problems for Companies Like ford whove come out today objecting to what mr sunak is saying, because theyve invested a huge amount of money in this this road to ruin that is net zero. So you know, we are going to have to turn around and we are going to have to cause pain to those companies that have invested. But it is clear that we cannot go down, continue down the road. We have we have been on the cost of net zero. Is hundreds of thousands of pounds per household. Its that amount of money. Okay. Sam about it and said , sorry, sorry, i just want said, sorry, sorry, i just want to bring sam sam back in. Andrew said there net zero is the road to ruin. What do you the road to ruin. What do you make of that . Oh , it was quite frankly, oh, it was quite frankly, astonished to hear andrew say that we have to cause pain for those businesses that are investing in britain, those businesses that are creating thousands of jobs across the country. The reason why the us, country. The reason why the us, china and the eu are investing trillions in this transition is because they see which way the wind is blowing. They know where the jobs of the future are. This the jobs of the future are. This is the moment where we need to be giving certainty to businesses and not undermining them as chopping and changing these targets would do. These targets would do. Sam so its all about the have to just swallow those costs. Are you that people are just going to have to fork out £15,000 for a heat pump an extra £15,000 for a heat pump an extra £15,000 for a heat pump an extra £15,000 for an extra vehicle . I mean, people real people in the real world outside the westminster bubble cant do that. Sam. We have seen over the last 20 years the costs of Green Technologies come down to the point. Now that renewables are the cheapest sources of power. The costs of evs are coming down now. They are not there yet. But now. They are not there yet. But as weve set out earlier, the essence of going faster on the transition means that you get more evs on the market and they filter through to the second hand market and that means that they then become affordable. If they then become affordable. If you slow down that transition and you make it less affordable for consumers in the medium term i andrew i have to tell you, it is not true that renewables are the cheapest form of energy. I the cheapest form of energy. I spend my days looking at this. Spend my days looking at this. There have been a whole series of studies that have looked at the cost of offshore wind and have shown that its still around £125 a megawatt hour. Thats at least 50. Andrew simply false or simply false . Simply false or simply false . No, it is absolutely fact. Thats in the Peer Reviewed literature. Okay. Not just me saying youve clearly read youve clearly read different facts. Andrew, let me just put to you what because theres charities that are coming out and speaking about this now and reacting. Save the children, for example, is saying that the government rolling back climate commitments is a betrayal of childrens futures. Do you do you have children . Do you do you do you empathise with that statement in any sense . Statement in any sense . No. People swallow the hysteria that comes out of the green ngos and that they believe this stuff. If you read the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, it doesnt talk about crises or disasters or anything like that. That is its a myth. Its essentially a religious belief. Essentially a religious belief. The official view , as i say, of the official view, as i say, of the ipcc, is that Climate Change is a problem. But it is not an existential problem. We need to stop the hysteria and start being rational once again. Sam, one of the questions now is this is about the morality versus the money, isnt it . The concept of net zero, which we can all agree with versus the cost, particularly the cost to individual household. Now, when you were advised and boris boriss Climate Change committee came up with their own set of costings, the cost of net zero by 2050, they estimated had to be running to £1. 4 trillion. And when thats broken down, that equates to £4,700 per household every year until 2050. Would you not agree that the huge cost of net zero now is the wake up call , which is given rishi the opportunity to say we need to press pause on this because individual consumer hours simply cant afford it. So firstly, i just want to pick up on one thing that andrew said he is yet again misrepresenting the facts, the testimony of the thousands of scientists to the ipcc is absolutely clear about the impacts of Climate Change and they are extremely concerned. Hence why theyre advising all governments to take action and get to net zero by mid century. But this idea that there is this trade off between morality and money, as you put it, is simply be false. The way for us to get more prosperous is to invest in the new clean tech that can bring our energy bills down. The have been clear that there are greater costs to inaction on net zero for our economy through the increased flood risks and other risks to our supply chains than there are from us acting on net zero. And the way that we should act in is a clear and consistent way that gives businesses the opportunity to invest , gives businesses the opportunity to invest, and that is what is being undermined today. Okay, gentlemen, we have to leave it there. Our big debate on net zero targets, sam richards and andrew mumford, thank you for joining richards and andrew mumford, thank you forjoining us on the thank you for joining us on the live desk. Live desk. Well, as you would expect, passionate views on on both sides and therell be more passionate views, im sure, after that downing street press conference, which we will bring you here on gb news at 430 this afternoon. And that will be on the Patrick Christys show. Patrick has just rocked up, but before that, inquest into the death that, an inquest into the death of officer died of a Police Officer who died while duty in nottinghamshire while on duty in nottinghamshire has today.
