Dont forget , you can get in touch with us all the usual ways. Vaiews gbnews. Com or of course on twitter at gb news. So to our top story tonight , the greek top story tonight, the greek government has declared a severe fire risk in almost half of its land mass. British holidaymakers on the isle of rhodes continue to flee the hellish conditions that the wildfires have caused. But spoiler alert, the Rhodes Fire Department has admitted the fires, quote , were started by fires, quote, were started by human hands. Fires, quote, were started by human hands. So if arsonists were responsible, why is the doom mongering media constantly overhype seeing the so called Climate Crisis angle on this . Alex im going to start with you. Fascinating when you look into the history of greek fires, every single fire from two thousand and seven, arson, 2009, arson, 2012. Arson, 2018 arson. You get the picture this year the same again. So these are crimes started by human hands that happen routinely. And yet that happen routinely. And yet why do we have this constant narrative of talking up the end of the world as we know it through Climate Change . Well, it certainly suits the current narrative, which largely goes unchallenged to say this is because of that. Whereas because of that. Whereas actually, as the greeks are telling us themselves, and god, youve got to feel for the landowners, the peoples whose properties threatened landowners, the peoples whose prop fooled if youre watching the news into thinking this is some extraordinary year of difference. Actually on on the data its not. But on the longer term and global basis, i looked at some data from the Royal Society which showed that from the year 2000 onwards, fires globally are down in terms of the footprint they cover globally by about a quarter. So whilst the narrative people might wish to pursue is that the world is on fire, it seems the data suggests thats not the case. Mr schneider can hear you here. Great. In your teeth there. There is some merit, though, isnt it . The facts are the facts. You know, the media likes to propagate. The narrative world narrative of the world is burning its kind of burning because its the kind of the jour. But the data the topic du jour. But the data is the this is this is is the data. This is this is started by humans. Well, the Fire Department said that fires are set by human handsin said that fires are set by human hands in general terms, and theyre going to investigate. And of course, the impact of having day after day, almost week after week of over 40 degrees temperatures and the way the winds going in a the winds are going in a particular way to expand that fire, of course, be fire, of course, should be looked it seems to me looked into. But it seems to me on the face of it, the fact that theyre having 40 degree heat wave that lasts much longer than they beforehand to they do beforehand seems tied to climate but going to the Climate Change. But going to the larger issue, are we over focusing on the Climate Crisis . No, we are hugely under focusing on the Climate Crisis. How can you say that when all we ever talk about is the Climate Crisis . Well, you if only if well, you know, if only if only it were. Let me lay out a few things. So at the moment, there is the heat wave in europe, the simultaneous drought i one here. One here. Well, i know because were not in that weather system, but thats how weather systems work. But in europe, there is in china, theres a record breaking drought. In the us, they theyve had that theyve had almost wet Bulb Temperatures in south asia. And this follows the same thing happening last year where the Yangtze River in china , for the Yangtze River in china, for example, dried up in places. We had the same thing in germany. It damaged trade in the rhine was was too small. The temperature in the north atlantic, every single day since the 1st of april this year has been the highest it has ever been the highest it has ever been on record. And it is just hot and it is going up. The impact of these things cumulatively on our lives is already big and is potentially and is and is potentially much more dramatic. And if you look at if you if you if you look at not the doomsday stuff, if you look at the direct line of travel of where the science. Hang on, hang on. Okay. Hang on, hang on. Okay. Alex, alex, what the. Alex, alex, what the. Alex, alex, what the. Alex, get a word in there because the fact of because look, look, the fact of the is, people like you the matter is, people like you are called Climate Change deniers. Us, all deniers. None of us, we all know that the climate has always changed. Isnt it that just whats happening . No. That the climate is i believe that the climate is changing. That man changing. And i believe that man affects the climate in the way that indeed, that it changes. And indeed, Climate Change may make far more likely at likely in certain places and at certain was your certain times. Which was your point making it more point about heat making it more likely this takes place. Likely that this takes place. But are, were seeing but what we are, were seeing with at least this story with this at least this story about fires in greece is that were not actually having more fires globally. In europe fires globally. We or in europe , than we have done historically. Certainly that study i mentioned from the Royal Society since 2000, Society Papers since 2000, thats good data. Its 23 years worth of data which suggests the number of fires we have or the amount of fire have the amount of fire we have in the world down in forest world has gone down in forest fires and of course is due at least as much on this data from arson as anything else. So if i go from the broad to the go from the broad data to the specific we were air, specific before we were on air, nana had an interview with about as grounded an interviewee as you can find. It was a volunteer greek firefighter who said, a guy whos gone out from roads, gone out from his town to try and help them put out the fires. He said, i can see the propane bottles that people were using, whether it was for barbecues or more sinister outcomes were using in the forest that started the fires that im trying to put out. And its worth bringing at this point some of the historic fires that were started by human hands greece, including in hands in greece, including in 2018 when they were started in 2021. Beg your pardon . They were started deliberately as an organised activity. Organised criminal activity. There are huge allegations of listen corruption , even listen of corruption, even at a governmental level. And another governmental level. And another thing that practically nobody thing is that practically nobody gets penalised prosecuted for gets penalised or prosecuted for arson in greece , 2. 8. And surely arson in greece, 2. 8. And surely we should be we should be getting tougher on arson rather than pretending its the Climate Change. Okay. But no one is suggesting that if someone starts a fire, that they shouldnt be prosecuted of course thats the case. This, that and the greek authorities arent saying that theyre saying that have an saying that well have an investigation. And investigation saying that well have an inin;tigation. And investigation saying that well have an inin fulltion. And investigation saying that well have an inin full swing and investigation saying that well have an inin full swing and nvestigation saying that well have an inin full swing and welligation saying that well have an inin full swing and well make| is in full swing and well make announcements every every fire in living memory is an act of arson. But if youre trying to use the fact that there is some arson in greece to not worry about every major fire. So let lets take an organisation thats not a kind of its not pushing an alarmist agenda, as you might call it, zurich, an insurance agency, an Insurance Company , i think has a company, i think has a projection that by mid century, in 25 years time, there will be a billion people displaced from where they live. You dont think an Insurance Company might have an Insurance Company might have an agenda to make people take out insurance against fire each each year for the last few years, the number people years, the number of people displaced increasing displaced globally is increasing. This year is the largest year on record. 110 million. Thats driving flows of refugees. There are causes to these things and to just say, oh no , this this to just say, oh no, this this isolated thing over here, you cant change the fact that for example, in march last year it was 30 degrees in both the north and the south pole that the scale of melting, of the Greenland Ice sheet or the west Antarctic Ice sheet is extremely worrying. Okay. It came out actually this week that about 400,000 years ago, greenland was completely ice free. Of course , it was ice free. Of course, it was proving that this whole thing is cyclical. Alex i worry that this conversation on is basically on tram lines where people are pursuing paths that dont actually intersect to the point of being a useful conversation. Part of that , may i say, is part of that, may i say, is that youre being reasonable because some people look at this that youre being reasonable becesay some people look at this that youre being reasonable becesay ,;ome people look at this that youre being reasonable becesay , look, eople look at this that youre being reasonable becesay , look, isople look at this that youre being reasonable becesay , look, i see look at this that youre being reasonable becesay , look, i see fire,k at this and say, look, i see fire, therefore your this must be because of Climate Change. Thats not a fallacy that you rightly youve avoided. Youve not fallacy. Youve fallen not a fallacy. Youve fallen into. To easy look into. But its so to easy look at fires television at these fires on our Television Screens and say, you know, with your teenage eyes filled with tears and say , the world is on tears and say, the world is on fire because of Climate Change, that at least is not the case. And im glad that there are at least some channels willing to have that discussion. Alex james thats it for round okay, ill dont kill round one. Welcome back to dewbs co with me. Martin daubney. Or is it daubs and co keeping me company until 7 00 Pr Consultant alex dean and former adviser to jeremy corbyn, James Schneider well, youve been getting in touch in your drone on that previous we just had previous debate. We just had Climate Emergency or arson on the roads, fires. This is an the roads, fires. This is an excellent comment from graham as a former fireman, i can confirm that 99 of bush fires are down to twisted arsonists. All of to twisted arsonists. All of Southern Europe gets tinder dry every year. These fires do not start naturally. And thats from start naturally. And thats from a firefighter. Martin says this, a firefighter. Martin says this, not me. Martin an i cant help thinking these fires are started by environmentalists to keep Climate Change at the top of the agenda. That might be an overreach. Thats overreach. But anyway, thats just there. Joan trees dont just out there. Joan trees dont spontaneously ignite fact. This is arson and for a bit of balance, andy said just because a fire is started by human hand, the conditions to become the conditions for it to become a wildfire are tinder a widespread wildfire are tinder dry conditions and strong winds. So its of you, martin, to. So its odd of you, martin, to discount Climate Change as a factor in these cases. Thats what we like, nice bit of what we like, a nice bit of balance. Dont forget, balance. And dont forget, coming dewbs co weve coming up after dewbs co weve got nigel farage, the exclusive coming up after dewbs co weve got ni linearage, the exclusive coming up after dewbs co weve got ni line on ge, the exclusive coming up after dewbs co weve got ni line on that he exclusive coming up after dewbs co weve got ni line on that bbclclusive coming up after dewbs co weve got ni line on that bbc apology. Inside line on that bbc apology. He got this afternoon. Moving on to our next story now, the government is backing away from their unpopular green policies in a bid to win the next election. Rishi sunak says the governments target of hitting net zero emissions by 2050 must not impose unnecessary costs. Well, we saw in uxbridge the ulez means you lose. So is it ulez means you lose. So is it time for the tories to do a net zero u turn to help them win the general election . Alex ill start with you. First of all, is it a good idea . Is it simply reactionary to a recent by election victory . And more to by election victory . And more to the point, do you trust them as far as you can throw them . Well, theres not theres not anything wrong with saying when the facts change, i change my mind and i think its good to try to be honest reflective try to be honest and reflective of my fair share of things. I did my fair share of things. I did my fair share of in uxbridge, as i of campaigning in uxbridge, as i imagine too. I can imagine james did, too. I can tell there was no huge there tell you there was no huge there was no huge wave of affection for my party. It was because of ulez party ulez that the conservative party won by election. And won that by election. And despite fact that labour despite the fact that labour candidate locally completely understandably ditched the policy, wrong and policy, said it was wrong and tried take different stance tried to take a different stance to stance that his mayor in to the stance that his mayor in london, sadiq khan , has so ulez london, sadiq khan, has so ulez showed that you can have a party partisan advantage on these issues and here the two the main parties have broadly been in lockstep. People have always said about the uk, its good that the Climate Change is not a debate over which theres a partisan difference. Well, here weve seen an advantage gained by my party by weve seen an advantage gained by my party by there being one. And i must say that the most important thing at the next election will be how much of the red wall the conservative party can hang to. So i think that can hang on to. So i think that there things. Whilst there are two things. Whilst still remain credible, there are two things. Whilst stiliconservativenain credible, there are two things. Whilst stiliconservative party, edible, there are two things. Whilst stiliconservative party, because the conservative party, because its in this position for its been in this position for so long on Climate Change, there are things conservative are two things the conservative party do between now and party could do between now and the that would the next election that would be rational electorally rational and help it electorally. Would be to change. The first would be to change the on cars being the restriction on cars being banned by 2030 to match the european commitment, the europeans have shifted their deadune europeans have shifted their deadline to 2035. Why put ourselves at a competitive disadvantage for a relatively short period of time, which to a point id like to know. Jamess view on, of course, is something that would harm those comparatively the least well off in society by banning combustible engines. And the second thing, of course, that we could at least do is continue to extract from the north sea to grant new licences. There is a clear point of difference between the conservative party and labour. Starmer says he wont grant new licences. The conservative say that we conservative party say that we should, i just point out should, and i just point out that if extracted all that we that if we extracted all that we possibly could from everything thats north sea thats known in the north sea and did it all at once, wed still meeting still be more than meeting our ipcc targets. Still be more than meeting our ipc so, rgets. Still be more than meeting our ipc so, james, on you. So this is so, james, on you. So this is about having a wedge issue, a point difference. Alex point of difference. As alex said, there a lot of people cant tell the difference between the tories and the labour a clear labour party any more. A clear difference on ulez the tories are seeing opportunity. See, are seeing an opportunity. See, this will go this is something that will go down because while the down well because while the principle saving planet, principle of saving the planet, of we all agree with the of course we all agree with the cost, the personal cost to households is what is hurting people and making them reconsider their electorally. This is canny politics, isnt it . So i want the conservative party to lose the next election and be punished for running the country extremely badly for the last 13 years. So if they did do this, i would be happy in electoral terms because currently there arent really very many dividing lines between labour and the tories. And this would create one and this would this would help labour. Yeah, of course, if the next election were fought do you want were is fought on, do you want to do things on the cost of living Climate Crisis you living Climate Crisis or do you not do things on the not want to do things on the cost of living Climate Crisis thatis cost of living Climate Crisis that is going to work to labours advantage. Now, it labours advantage. Now, it didnt course, didnt in uxbridge, of course, but uxbridge. Are the but in uxbridge. What are the circumstances . Weve but in uxbridge. What are the circianstances . Weve but in uxbridge. What are the circia policyzs . Weve but in uxbridge. What are the circia policy that weve but in uxbridge. What are the circia policy that hasnt weve but in uxbridge. What are the circia policy that hasnt come ve but in uxbridge. What are the circia policy that hasnt come in got a policy that hasnt come in yet, so more people think its going to impact them than they are. Going impact in are. Its going to impact 1 in 10 cars, and in london, 10 cars, cars. And in london, about half of households have cars. Most actually cars. So most people actually arent going be impact affected. But the poorest are impacted. The worst. And it is in and its in one city. The read across to the rest of the country. I really dont air zones in dont think clean air zones in birmingham. Dont think clean air zones in birmingham. I dont think clean air zones in birmingham. I really dont think so. 50. So. Hang on. I want to be fair to james. On the one hand, the point that more people think theyll than theyll be affected than actually will be is a completely fair almost fair one. Thats almost certainly on the other certainly true. On the other hand, youre running together the of living, the two terms cost of living, climate they are Climate Crisis as if they are one thing. Are they are one thing. They are they are not. And indeed they may be intense in the intense in certainly in the immediate if you to a immediate term. If you say to a householder that they have to lose have lose their boiler and have a heat pump, if they say they have to lose the car they they bought relatively and have relatively recently and have a new or or pay pay or new one or or to pay pay or 2015, depending what kind of 2015, depending on what kind of car then you know, there car it is. Then you know, there may well be a conflict between on a persons cost of living and the Climate Crisis that you identify. Cant just claim identify. You cant just claim it all runs together as a macro thing. Thing. It certainly does. Part of the why food are the reason why food costs are higher is because of poor harvests that we had from the spanish heatwave. I mean, these spanish heatwave. I mean, these things are very much related. Things are very much related. Part of the disruption to supply chains. Were seeing part of what i was talking about earlier about brexit that you that you blamed before, i was delighted to hear him blame the spanish because people always blame it on so pleased to hear so im very pleased to hear you say it was the spanish heatwave. Well, thats spanish. Heatwave is certainly one the heatwave is certainly one of the things of the our things and part of the our supply problems was to do supply chain problems was to do with difficulty moving goods around. Last year in germany and china. Absolutely around. Last year in germany and chi|related absolutely around. Last year in germany and chi|related. Absolutely around. Last year in germany and chi|related. And absolutely around. Last year in germany and chi|related. And i absolutely around. Last year in germany and chi|related. And i thinkylutely around. Last year in germany and chi|related. And i think if tely around. Last year in germany and chi|related. And i think if this are related. And i think if this is the dividing line the tories want to have with labour, thats actually labour. Just actually good for labour. Just wait. This point wait. Let me make this point because at the moment the labour strategy is otherwise to no strategy is otherwise to have no dividing the dividing lines, which means the tories set it closer tories will get to set it closer to the time. James dont you think that the shows that in the ulez point shows that in some at least people some communities at least people will that weve will think that weve effectively just put it bluntly, were advancing whilst people accept need address the accept the need to address the climate were advancing climate issues, were advancing on quickly. On it too quickly. Think people just yeah, i think people just want a clear choice actually, dont they . They an dont they . They want an alternative because the alternative because at the moment a uni party. Moment we have a uni party. Theyre think theyre all basically, i think Greta Thunberg in disguise. Only do we have. If only do we have. If only do we have. If only do we have. I was trying to ask. Well i was trying to ask james was i think people have the sense they would like to do something to help the environment as long as were not too hairshirt about it. If you make it easy for people to recycle, theyll do it. If you tell them they have to put in the wall, take to put a hole in the wall, take out the boiler and stick in a heat pump in every house. They think themselves, is think to themselves, this is going too far. Ten grand. Sort mistake. Ten grand sort of mistake. And today are saying you and the snp today are saying you cannot a house, bring it cannot sell a house, bring it actually bring a law. You cant sell your house unless it has a heat for £10,000 penalty to heat pump for £10,000 penalty to every that i think is every homeowner. That i think is punishing and punishing punitive politics. And i people were the i think if people were given the chance to vote a point of difference, would choose. Difference, they would choose. What james i want to know what james thinks, it seems to me thinks, because it seems to me some of these policies are punishing least well off in punishing the least well off in society and normally the left wing would to be in wing position would be to be in their interests. So for on the ulez, for example, terribly named example, the terribly named ulez, comms ulez, which has had bad comms and bad rollout, for example, that policy, i think they should have thats have all of the money thats raised from it should go into a scrappage scheme which should go from up. From the bottom up. So because moment its so because at the moment its just isnt it . Just going to tfl, isnt it . Yeah, precisely. So so, so that that, that 200 that should that, that 200 million that raises, million that that raises, that should scrappage scheme should go to a scrappage scheme from, bottom up, from from, from the bottom up, from self employed and lower income. So for them it isnt so, so for them it isnt presented as a cost. This is you can car. Yes. Can upgrade your car. Yes. See that. But you see that. But you see that. So i like that. And the labour party would be in a better position you were better position if you were advocating that. But sadly, you are the argument are not. And the argument between labour is between the labour party is advancing the scheme, as sadiq khan or thinking khan says, unchanged or thinking again not expanding, again and not expanding, which is the starmer position, which one is your position . Okay, guys, we to move on their guys, we have to move on their excellent guys, we have to move on their excyagain, both sides put across again, both sides put across and idea. I think and thats a great idea. I think more carrot and stick more carrot and less stick completely, right more carrot and less stick comjpeople right more carrot and less stick comjpeople option right more carrot and less stick comjpeople option riythat, that people the option of that, they go for it. Thats the they will go for it. Thats the end of that debate. Now, lets have a quick look at the weather. All going to weather. All pro motorist then sunak could walk back into downing street at the next election , whereas dave says i election, whereas dave says i would not vote conservative in the next election because they are socialism lite. Hardly any different at all from labour. Different at all from labour. Okay, thats great stuff. Lets move on to our next debate now again about the labour party because they are pledging to make self identification make gender self identification easier if they get into power and thats despite keir starmer saying the opposite. When this saying the opposite. When this issue almost sunk the snp north of the border after the law almost allowed double rapist isle of brighton into a womans jail. So is this a isle of brighton into a womans jail. So is this a culture war the tories should be fighting at the tories should be fighting at the next election . James im going to start with you, keir starmer seems to change his position on gender self id in the same way he changes his position on brexit. First, hes for it, then hes against it and now the latest rule is basically weve got Anneliese Dodds saying that you can have one appointment with one doctor who agrees you have gender dysphoria, and if youre a man or woman, you can change gender. Why . | or woman, you can change gender. Why . I want to ask you, as a representative of the left, why are the left so obsessed with trans issues when really its like 0. 5 of the population, maximum at the sake for the sake of abandoning 51 of the population . Women martin, i think youre being very unfair to keir starmer there. I mean, he flips around on almost every issue. Its not only those two. And with friends like this. And with friends like this. And with friends like this. And i would you know, i would i would turn it around. I dont think that the focus on whos fighting the culture wars and so on generally comes from comes from the left. It comes from some parts of the right which are are trying to basically let the Political Class off the hook because rather than talking about Economic Prosperity and why we dont have any whats been going on in the last 20 years or so in our in our economy, theyre trying to get us to talk about something which, as you say , is an which, as you say, is an extremely marginal issue for me. If you ask me whats my opinion on the way in which it should happen, my answer is, i dont know. Im not an expert in it. Im perfectly happy to trust what they say on something which, as you say , is a small which, as you say, is a small issue and focus on all these other things that i think we should be talking about. With respect, i didnt say its a small issue and i dont think it is a small issue. We see labour losing women is trending. Trans women are con men. And the men. Is trending. And the feminist movement is very, very angry at they feel that angry at what they feel that women being thrown under the women are being thrown under the bus. Well, alex, youve had your go. Alex, youve just been out campaigning. Does this issue campaigning. Does this issue come doorsteps . Are people come up on doorsteps . Are people actually it actually concerned about it or is just a thing . Is it just a media thing . No, does come up and im no, it does come up and im surprised that james gave what i say a rather answer, say was a rather safe answer, ducking and taking on what i think challenging think is a really challenging issue. For a long time ive think is a really challenging issue. In for a long time ive think is a really challenging issue. In south long time ive think is a really challenging issue. In south ofng time ive think is a really challenging issue. In south of theime ive think is a really challenging issue. In south of the river. Ve lived in south of the river. Indeed for a long time i lived in elephant and castle where tories are rarer than the elephants. But when i go when i was going southwark and was going around southwark and vauxhall bermondsey, not vauxhall and bermondsey, not natural conservative patches, you find women on you quite often find women on the have the doorstep who say, i have never tory. This never voted tory. This, this next election is the first time id think about it because id even think about it because at your party knows what at least your party knows what a woman idea this woman is. And the idea this issue no cut through is , i issue has no cut through is, i think, and also the idea think, wrong. And also the idea its fault of the right, i its the fault of the right, i think, for birds. Its think, is for the birds. Its not the right whos been saying that men be able to call that men should be able to call themselves and then go themselves women and then go into womens or changing into womens toilets or changing rooms. The right thats into womens toilets or changing roomzsaying the right thats into womens toilets or changing roomzsaying mene right thats into womens toilets or changing roomzsaying men shouldthats into womens toilets or changing roomzsaying men should be ts into womens toilets or changing roomzsaying men should be able been saying men should be able to themselves women to declare themselves women and go sports, go into competitive sports, potentially people and potentially injuring people and certainly taking podium places from actual women. And its not the that have been saying the right that have been saying simply yourself a simply by declaring yourself a woman, you get to have all of the experience that comes with a lived life of womanhood and girlhood. And we should not only girlhood. And we should not only can you say it, i am then obuged can you say it, i am then obliged to at least pretend that i believe it. And im not saying thats a valid point. Yeah, im not saying im not saying theres no cut through because people are barraged in the with extremely the media with with an extremely strong focus on this issue completely disproportionate to it. In terms where you say it. And in terms where you say its at the expense of feminists and 51 and women who are 51 of society , then why in polls are society, then why in polls are women more pro trans than men . Because whos polled yugo . Yugo yougov run lots of polls on it. Tracker polls. Its a consistent people on doorsteps. People on doorsteps. I. I speak to are very women are very concerned about there being erased. So when the question should the tories fight on this you know i dont care because im not a tory party adviser, but i think people at home when theyre watching it and they say when they see the politicians or billionaire media are pushing this kind of thing or, you know what, what whats statue is up or what . Hold on, hold on. Let me say youre being mugged off. Youre being mugged. Off to let them off the hook. So we arent focusing on the manifest failure for that. We have in the country to improve peoples Living Standards. So if that was the priority of the labour party, then why dont they focus on that . And instead theyre coming out with these kind of issues which they know this will be divisive. So this is probably 1 or 2 lines in a policy document probably that they work from, and it does today , its like six. Its 6 or 7 tweets from analysts. The main spokesman on it from the labour party. Thats its not right to say its only one shadow equalities minister. My view would be this there are certain issues which on which reality did in reality bites ulez did in uxbndge reality bites ulez did in uxbridge and it saved the government a huge amount of embarrassment, losing a by election in outer london. The former Prime Ministers seat equally. I think this is one of those issues in the end where no matter what the dogma of trendy dogma saying, you know, im dogma and saying, you know, im in favour of everything goes this is something on which there is through that is enough cut through now that if conservative if the conservative party properly up properly embraces standing up for itll be a strong for womanhood, itll be a strong asset at the next election. Final word. Do you james, final word. Do you think you think that women think do you think that women are starting to abandon the labour party over the fact, i labour party over the fact, as i say, many, women feel that say, many, many women feel that they not stood up for , they are not stood up for, theyre and they theyre being erased and they dont it, and should dont like it, and why should they like theyre safety. They like it . Theyre safety. The to care and the left used to care and nurture for women. There is there is no evidence that women are women are more pro trans than men , according to pro trans than men, according to polling. If you look at how labouris polling. If you look at how labour is polling it, it doesnt seem to be taking it. Im sure people have very strong views about it. My point is i dont think very many people after when we have the next election , when we have the next election, were being 14 or 15 years of falling Living Standards. Thats going to be at the at the top of their agenda. And so, yes. Are their agenda. And so, yes. Are the conservatives going to push it . But theyre flailing around for literally anything because would want to go into would you want to go into election based on the record of the last, last 14, 15 years . Its not flailing to realise this issue has become increasingly salient to peoples minds more men pretending to minds as more men pretending to be or more people who used be women or more people who used to be men now identify as women or had treatment, are or have had some treatment, are winning sometimes winning female sports, sometimes injuring actual women along the way . Its not flailing to recognise that that issue has risen up the agenda. And i think risen up the agenda. And i think that its funny if you think about you know, since the about it, you know, since the dawn time, have been dawn of time, women have been poorly treated in society and treated are less than treated as if they are less than im not pretending everythings right, equality right, but just when equality was distance , weve was in glimpsing distance, weve said as a man, can said suddenly i as a man, can now declare myself a woman. And now declare myself a woman. And everyone has to pretend that i am and get all of the am and i get all of the privileges of safe space and the rights woman has. Sounds, rights that a woman has. Sounds, sounds rather like the patriarchy to that, gentlemen. Another fair and full balanced debate. Thank you for that. The that. Well, coming up, the orkney isles are exploring whether or not to secede from the the making the uk. Are we seeing the making of exit thats coming right of an exit thats coming right after the. Break welcome back to dewbs co with me, Martin Daubney keep me company until 7 pm. Tonight. My channel all male panel Pr Consultant alex dean and former advisor to jeremy corbyn, James Schneider. Advisor to jeremy corbyn, James Schneider. Its been a very odd show so far. We had a debate on culture wars. Might we go transit . Shes got some great emails to read a couple out. Judnh emails to read a couple out. Judhhi emails to read a couple out. Judith i would never ever vote labour whilst they spout this trans rubbish. I am not a cis woman. Im trans rubbish. I am not a cis woman. Im just just a woman. Woman. Im just just a woman. And then phil starmer is hanging on to the trans gender hangers on to the trans gender hangers on and they make him unelectable , certainly by women. Gordon has , certainly by women. Gordon has a bit of fun with his final comment. I can self id as a giraffe, but it still doesnt mean i can eat the leaves from a tall tree without the aid of a cherry picker. Yeah. Gordon. I can see what you did there. Lets move on to our final debate of the evening so orkney could be leaving the uk to become a self governing territory of norway. Orkney territory of norway. Orkney Council Passed the motion allowing the island a future outside of scotland and the uk. Outside of scotland and the uk. The islands are just 90 minutes from the british mainland, which wants to be norwegian. So is wants to be norwegian. So is this divorce the start of the uk becoming ever more fragmented . Becoming ever more fragmented . Alex, im going to start with you. Its a fascinating development. This and the reason that theyre doing this is because theyve been completely left behind by the north sea oil policy. Bear in left behind by the north sea oil policy. Bear in mind, left behind by the north sea oil policy. Bear in mind, norway, policy. Bear in mind, norway, which shares the same oil field 300 miles to the north, is has has a hugely efficient and cheap state run Energy System and the biggest Sovereign Wealth Fund in the world. As a result. Right. As a result. Right. Meanwhile, shetland is withering the vine withering on the vine and theyre fed up of humza yousaf. They met him today and think they met him today and i think they had stern they would have had a few stern words. This the sort of words. But is this the sort of thing we should be doing . I mean, should be cherishing . Mean, should we be cherishing . Its like orkney, know, its like orkney, you know, if people if the sadly misguided people who have pursued the cause of Scottish Independence as Scottish Independence have as net results for their activity , net results for their activity, losing the orkneys from our country and attempts to send male rapists to female prisons, what a legacy that would prove to be. My answer to these guys would be. Whilst of course you may expect me to play rule britannia and say never, never, neven britannia and say never, never, never, im actually more sympathetic notion that sympathetic to the notion that the have some the orkneys should have some kind different governing the orkneys should have some kind given nt governing the orkneys should have some kind given theirverning the orkneys should have some kind given their status] the orkneys should have some kind given their status and process given their status and situation in the parts of situation in the other parts of our country. Dont pretend situation in the other parts of our llheilly. Dont pretend situation in the other parts of our james turn to you. You think, why are we doing a story about orkney . But actually this if we pin as a consequence pin it as a direct consequence of a part of the uk thats been left behind by this, this slavish to net zero slavish adherence to net zero because the revenue from from nonh because the revenue from from north sea oil is plummeting. Keir starmer has said he wants to all north sea oil. Places to end all north sea oil. Places like orkney will be absolutely broke. Is there any more . Is broke. Is there any more . Is there wonder how many more there any wonder how many more years of reserves we have of years of reserves do we have of nonh years of reserves do we have of north sea oil enough to keep these very, rich these people very, very rich for seven years, seven years, seven, seven years, seven years, seven, seven of a lot of money as seven years of a lot of money as opposed seven years of opposed to seven years of nothing . I dont like. Okay. Anyway leaving that all aside, i believe in the peoples right to self determination. So right to self determination. So in a kind of similar way to what alex was saying, if they want to have a different system , then have a different system, then they should be able to have a different system. It should be incumbent on britain, the British Government and the Scottish Government to try to work out an arrangement that they that they like. But part of they that they like. But part of the reason why were having fracturing in the united kingdom, if we look at it historically, what you see in northern ireland, in scotland , northern ireland, in scotland, in orkney an extent , but a in orkney to an extent, but a lesser extent in wales , its lesser extent in wales, its because the compact, which was based on rising Living Standards , is, is fracturing, which is why you see the rising up of people pursuing other strategies. Now, we might think that these strategies are likely to do well for the people there or unlikely to do well for the people there. But the reason why they are happening is because of overall failures within our national government. Alex, is this. Alex, is this. I agree with jamess prognosis to an extent. If prognosis to an extent. If i think specifically about the example of the orkneys, one of the reasons we disagree to an extent, further extent, but might be further closer you think, closer together than you think, is that if i accept your position that theres only a certain amount left in the north sea and its finite actually, with new technologies and new explorations, you continually find basin been find the Permian Basin has been declared time and declared finished time and again, it turns out theres again, and it turns out theres more to be extracted than people ever thought. But lets say that youre that youre right and that theres a finite allowing finite limit. But allowing new contracts allowing new contracts and allowing new licences at least those licences at least puts those facilities on a glide path, which would provide orkney with its financial set up with another income another generation of income from sea rather than from the north sea rather than the cliff edge which Keir Starmers policies currently the cliff edge which keir starmerwith. Cies currently the cliff edge which keir starmerwith. Thatsrrently the cliff edge which keir starmerwith. Thats whyly the cliff edge which keir starmerwith. Thats why places threaten with. Thats why places like the orkneys are unlikely to embrace the labour position, notwithstanding the fact the snp is less popular now north of the border. Its not just the fact that 200,000 jobs invested that 200,000 jobs are invested in oil and gas industry in in the oil and gas industry in this country, which you might think traditionally the labour this country, which you might think cared onally the labour this country, which you might think cared about. The labour this country, which you might think cared about. Butlabour this country, which you might think cared about. But moreover party cared about. But moreover , specifically in the orkneys, they get a they get a financial benefit that they will be depnved benefit that they will be deprived of by a cliff edge rather a gradual decline, rather than a gradual decline, which generation which which another generation of would permit of licences would permit the keeping it, keeping it going in another generation of licences is guarantees the cliff is what guarantees the cliff edge, what creates the to not be a cliff edge is investing in another Energy System which is going to take us forward after , going to take us forward after, lets even say it does last generation. As alex says, i dont think it will. I think its half a generation. But at some point there is a there is a cliff edge. No ijust to be clear. I was accepting your premise. I was accepting your premise. Even if its half a generation of time, the income that it would yield gives you another of cash. Another generation of cash. Argument and is so the argument and this is somewhere something that i do completely keir completely agree with with keir starmer wont hear starmer on, and you wont hear me that very much that me say that very much is that rather investing in new oil rather than investing in new oil and we should be investing and gas, we should be investing in the north sea in in wind in the north sea because the government is playing big financial role playing a big financial role either way. Take the Norwegian State Oil Company that youre talking beforehand. Is talking about beforehand. It is currently invested in a £4 billion investment in new oil and gas thing, which we are underwriting 3. 5 billion of. But the argument there is we should be we should be taking that investment underwriting that were build new were doing to build our new energy which we are Energy System, which we are going to need very soon. Alex, dont think alex, dont you think a sensible labour policy that supports jobs , that supports supports jobs, that supports sovereignty, supports Energy Self Sufficiency should look to places like norway and say , places like norway and say, look, they have a nationalised oil industry with cheap energy . Oil industry with cheap energy . That could be a labour party policy. Instead, i. Policy. Instead, i. But the norwegians are moving towards us. Firstly, they had it set up and manage hugely better than we did with the Sovereign Wealth Fund and all of that stuff. But now i agree with that. But now i agree with that. But now i agree with that. The norwegians themselves are moving to having wind and other Renewable Energies because its going to go if had a time going to go if i had a time machine, should we would be machine, should we would we be better having a sovereign better off having a Sovereign Wealth Fund started two generations which would generations ago, which would give sovereign give us the biggest Sovereign Wealth Fund in the world . Yes, of course. But given we are we are, my answer is are where we are, my answer is that its a false dichotomy to say its false proposition, to say its a false proposition, to say its a false proposition, to say we got the natural say that if we got the Natural Resources now, we should resources we have now, we should stop and to stop using those and switch to Renewable Energy instead. For the our lives. At least, the rest of our lives. At least, were need both , were going to need both, especially the alternative especially if the alternative realistically having realistically is stopping having our resources north our own resources in the north sea it from somewhere sea and buying it from somewhere else, buying it from our neighbours netherlands, neighbours in the netherlands, from , from the from the danes, from the norwegians or from russia or ukraine or the middle east . Well, i would far rather we had our own rather than we bought in, because the alternative isnt suddenly having magic renewables generating 100 of our needs. Its our of our of our needs. Its buying from elsewhere. Buying it from elsewhere. You must concur that jane, you must concur that renewables can let us down. Theyre unreliable. When the wind drops, the power goes off. When solar panels too hot , when solar panels get too hot, were coal from were importing coal from colombia , from south africa, colombia, from south africa, from north america , from from from north america, from from australasia to keep power stations on when we need them the most. Isnt this simple somatic of a failure of renewables. Were starving places like orkney out of existence. The point where they existence. The point where they want to leave the united kingdom. That shows to me thats symptomatic of a failure of an Energy Policy which cannot support provinces that are dictated to metropolitan dictated to by the metropolitan people agree with net zero. People who agree with net zero. The consequences things like the consequences are things like this. So you cant have under current technology, 100 renewables because of the things that youre talking about, which is why a nuclear, hydro and other things are necessary to balance the grid. Orkney i from where it is in the north sea, could provide, could get those things from wind and possibly from hydro so that thatis and possibly from hydro so that that is going to be the future. That is going to be the future. There is going to be use of fossil fuels to help get us from one situation to the next. But thats really where we have to be investing because if you look at the fossil capitalist system that we have developed for 150 years and poured trillions of dollars globally into its infrastructure , that is coming infrastructure, that is coming to an end either because of Climate Change, which i think thats whats causing it. But anyway , if you look at global anyway, if you look at Global Reserves of oil, for example, were talking 40, 44 years. If youre talking gas, youre talking 48 years. This is coming to an end. And we need to build a new system and a new infrastructure. Quick final word to you, alex. I think if you want to build, i believe we need both. I believe for the rest, even if its gas as a bridging fuel, were using fossil fuels for the rest of my life. Whilst we have more renewables, which you and i agree youre going to agree on. But if youre going to make that case, you should make it on principle, because if it on the principle, because if arguing shortage never arguing of shortage will never really weve talking really work. Weve been talking about oil for 100 years. About peak oil for 100 years. Over that years, used over that 100 years, weve used energy than energy more quickly than expected and weve always found energy more quickly than expectgotand weve always found energy more quickly than expectgot more eve always found energy more quickly than expectgot more stillalways found energy more quickly than expectgot more still left ys found energy more quickly than expectgot more still left thaand weve got more still left than weve got more still left than we ever thought. Okay, guys, have to leave okay, guys, we have to leave it there. Thank you to panel. Alex thank you to my panel. Alex dean james up dean and James Schneider. The bbc makes a very rare pubuc the bbc makes a very rare public apology and it makes it to me. Ill tell you in a moment how pleased i am. And as we start to discuss green taxes and the impact theyre having on low income families , the snp decides income families, the snp decides to go in completely the opposite direction and to ban gas boilers completely. What will that do to completely. What will that do to those on low incomes who want to sell a house . And michael gove is planning for more housing in our city centres. I think that might be a rather good idea. But first lets get the news with polly middlehurst. Polly middlehurst. Nigel thank you. Good evening. Well, our top story tonight is that the bbc has issued an apology to nigel farage over its reporting about the closure of his coutts bank account
