Be dry tomorrow. A different story. The winds are going to pick the west, some heavy pick up in the west, some heavy rain. Met office rain. There is a met Office Yellow warning in place. Join me later for all the details. Later for all the details. All the support agents get all the support for us today. Indeed. Yeah. Big weekend for the world cup. Can ireland the Rugby World Cup. Can ireland justify their position as the worlds best side with a statement win over south africa. 7 england action in lille at england in action in lille at 445 against chile. Lovely stuff , aiden. Thank lovely stuff, aiden. Thank you. Im stephen dixon. You. Im stephen dixon. Emily carver, and this is im emily carver, and this is breakfast on gb news. More morning. Morning. Morning to you. Theres a couple of things caught our eye today that we want your views on. I found this. This is in the sun. This morning and its looking about a cigarette ban , like a proper ban cigarette ban, like a proper ban so that the next generation nafion so that the next generation nation will not get to smoke at all. So rishi sunak apparently has come back with this idea that every year the age at which you can buy a cigarette will move forward. Yeah , they did this in new yeah, they did this in new zealand and i believe and essentially what you have is a scenario where potentially a 41 year old could buy cigarettes for a 40 year old, but the 40 year old wouldnt be able to go in and buy them for themselves. Well, yeah, but the so the idea is, of course, then youve got an entire generation that just never pick up the dirty weed the first well, weed in the first place. Well, theyre smoking disposable theyre all smoking disposable vapes arent they. Well vapes anyway arent they. Well do get the do you think i get the impression you dont like it as anidea . I anidea . I im just wary of government thinking they know best. Really . Yeah i mean, obviously, cigarettes are terrible for you. We all know theyre terrible for us. Fewer children are smoking anyway than they used to. Fewer anyway than they used to. Fewer teenagers than they used to. Should we really . Do we need to should we really . Do we need to ban it completely . Ban it completely . Well, its better than making them more and more expensive. Every budget, which is almost a tax on. Well, yeah. How much is a packet of cigarettes . Its about £10 now. Something like that. I think its more than that. I think its, you know, moving about 15 luminex. Moving up to about 15 luminex. Anyway, let us know what so anyway, let us know what you think about that. Is it a goodidea . I you think about that. Is it a good idea . I know it is a bit big brother, is it a good big brother, but is it a good idea . Do you think its a good idea . Im anything to get rid of smoking. Im sort of a bit drawn towards people will just get them from abroad. Well, they will. Will. But just will. They will. But i just think the trend, will really think the trend, it will really impact trend. Impact the trend. Its bit nanny state, its its a bit nanny state, its a bit nanny state. But, you know, sometimes these government best. These Big Government knows best. But bristol yeah but what about bristol uni . Yeah bristol but what about bristol uni . Yeah bri well, theyve had of well, theyve had a bit of a Drama Bristol University drama because Bristol University is i went and apparently is where i went and apparently at their freshers uh, the at their freshers fair, uh, the army, whats it called . The Officers Training course was just banned from the freshers fair. So just banned from the freshers fair. So people arent just banned from the freshers fair. So people arent allowed fair. So people arent allowed to see this. The government has got involved. Grant shapps has got involved. Grant shapps has got involved. Grant shapps has got involved. Hes now the defence secretary. Hes got involved and said this is wrong. This anti military. Involved and said this is wrong. This anti military. They this is anti military. They should be there at the freshest fair. Fair. Not . Why not . I just why not . Why not . I just i think thats a disgrace. Well student unions, there are big for their boots, arent they . Demand that theres no army presence. Presence. I think thats crazy. But anyway, let us know what you think about those two topics. Gb views gbnews. Com wed love to hear from you this morning. As always. Is now our main news today in Boris Johnson, the former pm has waded into the ongoing hs2 row after the government has refused to promise that it would help level up the north west of england. Yes, its a controversial project with now no guarantee that it will get to manchester and may go no further than birmingham. The southern end birmingham. The southern end might not even get into euston. So johnson says its being so Boris Johnson says its being mutilated. Mutilated. Now, what worries me about this is i mean, i was always for the hs2, even though it is controversial and hugely expensive, because thought, expensive, because i thought, look , if gets people not only look, if it gets people not only from the north west down south, but actually vice versa , then but actually vice versa, then thats going to be, you know, a really that could be a really positive thing for levelling up the country and giving access to the country and giving access to the length and breadth of the uk. If its only going to go at birmingham, what is the point . What are we spending the money on . So i thought the whole point was that it was going to link the midlands with the north and that would be fantastic for northern cities and towns. And northern cities and towns. And now its not even going. Its not only not may not be to going the north, but it may also not be ending in euston either. So its just a bit of a mess. Do you think that they should just scrap the lot now . Well, this is look, theres to going be a call to scrap it. What im unsure about now is the cost scrapping it compared cost of scrapping it compared to the of just keeping going. The cost of just keeping going. Well, is the sunk cost well, this is the sunk cost fallacy. Maybe, you know, you explain that youve spent if youve spent it 10 billion. Oh, youve spent it 10 billion. Oh, you may as well spend the next 30 billion because otherwise youve wasted the first 10 billion. But you go on and do billion. But if you go on and do it, youll have wasted even more money. So i dont know, really know. I dont know. Im now left absolutely unsure. The building parts of it near me. Well, not that close to me, but, you know, ten, 20 miles away, theyre building bits of it and you sort of think its this huge project. Its absolute vast. And i sort of see the positive in improving our infrastructure there. But with, you know, if its just not going to go where we want it to 90, going to go where we want it to go, also why bother moving around as much now with the working from home . No one minister has said, you know, there isnt the demand that they thought there would be no. So. No. So. All right. So there you go. All right. So there you go. Do we scrap it or not . Do we throw away the i dont know what its cost so far. Maybe its 10 billion. Well, itd be a huge amount of money. Supposed to cost 30, roughly. Theyre now projecting it would cost billion. Just cost 100 billion. So that just shows how much its shows just how much its ballooned of control. Ballooned out of control. Well, let us know what yeah, well, let us know what you think. Should it go or should we just plough ahead and hope up one day in hope it ends up one day in euston to manchester for, you know, birmingham know, the birmingham bit . Many theres only so many projected to be finished in 2032 at earliest 2032. At the earliest 2032. Ill be retired by then. Ill be retired by then. Ill be retired by then. Yeah, well, no you wont. Yeah, well, no you wont. Yeah, well no you wont. Another nine years going 67, 60. No im not staying till im 67. Ill tell you that for nothing. Ill tell you that for nothing. Ill tell you who. Never. Well ill tell you who. Never. Well hes still going at a very old age weather and still wants to keep going as well. And thats joe biden , of course, with the joe biden, of course, with the american elections. Hes still officially saying hes going to be the candidate for the democrats, which which i just very surprised at that. Why would you want to at that age . I dont mean to be yeah, i dont mean to be ageist, its i dont think ageist, but its i dont think its rather uncommon while watching joe biden do these press conferences around the world, his press secretary had to shut him up. Yeah , yeah. But thats so yeah, yeah. But thats so even if its biden versus trump again, its two old men, isnt it . Basically be rather depressing. Depressing. Nothing against old men, though, of course. No, no, no, no. But should they be running the world . Im not sure. Possibly not. Not entirely sure. Possibly not. Anyway, has anyway, President Biden has reportedly and this is crucial, promised Vladimir Zelenskyy long range missiles. Its a really important move. Yes. Now, the us media reported yesterday that biden had made this pledge during a bilateral summit at the white house on thursday , which was house on thursday, which was followed by the announcement of £325,000,000,000 Million Dollars of package of american weapons and aid. Now the us had been reluctant to supply the weapons because it it does raise a question as to whether there will be an escalation from russia. To now in terms of what is happening at the moment. Thats a Ukrainian Missile attack that we could see there hitting the headquarters of russias black sea fleet based in crimea. And sea fleet based in crimea. And there is a real sense , isnt there is a real sense, isnt there, that the ukrainians are really chipping away at that. I mean, its an important move on their part, but within all of this , what youve got to ask is, this, what youve got to ask is, is the idea that that ukraine gain can go on the offensive beyond those front lines going to draw russia to the conclusion that they can then attack the west . Well, this is the issue and this is what people have been concerned about throughout this, that if we escalate too much, if the west is seen to escalate too much , then russia will obviously much, then russia will obviously take that as as well. Not carte blanche, but definitely encouragement to go one step further and well pursue even more vicious tactics. Yes, but very difficult one, isnt it . Because you speak to military experts who say, no, what weve got to do is absolutely give them all the weapons we can, you know, protect them to the hilt, offensive weapons is everything bar boots on the ground. Yeah but its hard to know, actually, from all the reporting how ukraine is getting on. Well yeah. And but then whats the alternative . Thats always the key question, isnt it . The alternative is that you you let russia take over and then then what happens . Yeah. Then why do we just stand by and let it happen . We cant do that, can we . No, i dont think so. I think were doing the right thing. But bofis were doing the right thing. But Boris Johnson is always at the sidelines saying we need to do more. Yeah he was reported the other day saying that we are not lazy. I cant remember what his words he suggested lazy. I cant remember what his wordwe he suggested lazy. I cant remember what his wordwe werent he suggested lazy. I cant remember what his wordwe werent doingsuggested lazy. I cant remember what his wordwe werent doing enough,d that we werent doing enough, that we werent doing enough, that our foot off the that wed taken our foot off the gas essentially. But then, you know, sums of know, these are huge sums of money. So, you know, cost money. Yeah. So, you know, cost of living. Exactly. So theres no yeah, exactly. So theres no easy answer out of that one. But its interesting that america has to has reportedly now going to start providing crucial start providing these crucial oil weapons, which could change the direction of things. We shall see. We find out more about well, we find out more about those later we can do. Those weapons later we can do. Yeah, i want to know exactly what they are, what they can achieve. You know what theyre purpose is as compared to other types weapons, because these types of weapons, because these are long range missiles. So well, the tactical ballistics is the mgm 140 Army Tactical missile system. So perhaps we missile system. So perhaps we have some military experts at home who might be able to tell me exactly what these weapons can can achieve. Ill tell you can can achieve. Ill tell you what the cost , 1. 4, 7 million what the cost, 1. 4, 7 million per missile per missile. Goodness me, its a lot of money. Well, youve got to use those carefully. Oh, there you go. Anyway should we move on . Lets lets. King charles waved au revoir to france after a successful three day state visit. Yes. Three day state visit. Yes. Majesties boarded the plane after getting an ecstatic reception in bordeaux yesterday where they like good old, normal people tucked into cheese and had a glass of wine. Yes. Our royal correspondent Cameron Walker looks back on the kings visit to france for us. Shes a baller. Princess de the tories litvinenko laikyn rose thatis tories litvinenko laikyn rose that is. History shared and a that is. History shared and a future to build the king and queen officially welcomed to france by president macron and his wife during a rare ceremony at pariss arc de triomphe. At pariss arc de triomphe. Yeah , how are you . French yeah, how are you . French crowds delighted that a king is back on french soil. Their last back on french soil. Their last monarch forced out of this place in the 1700s before meeting his fate at the guillotine. But king charles and Queen Camilla had a much more friendly welcome at the palace of versailles. A magnificent state banquet hosted in their honour. And, of course , president pompidou hosted my mother here at the palace of versailles on her second state visit in 1972 to i was reminded recently that when she returned the courtesy with dinner for the president and madame pompidou at the hotel de charost, they ran into a little more difficulty. Into a little more difficulty. Our embassy tried to bring several cases of english wine over from hampshire for the banquet. Only to be prevented by a customs official at orly. A customs official at orly. Work hard, play hard for the queen and madame macron. After a comfortable win from the first lady, the pair launched a new uk france literary prize. Celebrate the importance of breeding and the ties between britain and france. Britain and france. Mr president , madame le president. Meanwhile, the king became the first member of the British Royal family to address french senators from their chamber. This is my 35th official visit to france. Each and every visit to france. Each and every time i have been struck by the warmth of the welcome, i have always received and by the immense good that can be accomplished. When france and accomplished. When france and the United KingdomWork Together. Diplomatic ties strengthened. It took a full minute and a half for the standing ovation to conclude. Inside the chamber conclude. Inside the chamber with senator eric bouquet, chair of the france uk friendship group. So of course its a great opportunity because britain and france must go on having regular and strong relationship. We are and strong relationship. We are neighbours. We are still youre not in the in the European Union anymore, but you are still part of europe. Okay. Dover is still the same distance from calais. So nothing has changed. The king and queen visited a flower market named after the late Queen Elizabeth ii, and then on a short walk to Notre Dame Cathedral to meet firefighters who tackled the Devastating Blaze in 2019 and those working to restore the famous landmark after french media leaked eco friendly train travel plans. There majesties flew to bordeaux for security reasons. 39,000 british expats live in bordeaux , the highest live in bordeaux, the highest number in france. And the king number in france. And the king and queen visited a british run organic vineyard in the heart of wine country. Defence was also wine country. Defence was also on the agenda, showing nato strength as the war in ukraine rages on. Wherever the kings been this week, hes genuinely received a really warm welcome. Six months ago, a tour like this would have seemed impossible. Buildings literally burning sparks by the french pension riots. The Foreign Office sent riots. The Foreign Office sent their majesties to france to strengthen relations. Whether that now translates into better trading partnerships in the post brexit world remains to be seen. Cameron walker news in seen. Cameron walker gb news in france , its just gone. France, its just gone. 615 a reminder of our top stories this morning. And will the hs2 ever reach manchester downing street is preparing, we think, to scrap the second leg of the High Speed Railway from birmingham. Boris johnson and David Cameron have warned that a mutilated line would be insanity. The Ukrainian Missile attack has hit the headquarters of russias black sea fleet , russias black sea fleet, leaving the Main Building in flames and a serviceman missing. Mps are calling on the government to provide more support for under pressure families ahead what theyve families ahead of what theyve called an inevitable new Energy Crisis. And now lets just go crisis. And now lets just go back to our royal review. Should back to our royal review. Should be because it has been quite a week for the king and queen, actually. Youve got to say its been successful for them in france. But lets get the views of helen shard, royal biographer and photographer. Good to see you this morning. Helen what do you this morning. Helen what do you make of how its gone for their majesties . Their majesties . I think its been huge , i think its been huge, successful. I really, really do. Um, you know, king charles, who would have believed it . So many people thought , you know, he people thought, you know, he couldnt be king and its just hes just he just has transitioned so well and so seamless. Theyre both amazing talkers and i just feel that theres a great future, um, with theres a great future, um, with the trade and things like that. The trade and things like that. I think its just been amazing. People were so happy to see them. I think actually in france they were far more euphoric than here in the uk. It was lovely to see and obviously in bordeaux i didnt realise there were so many expats there and i just think things are going to be truly successful. I just love the way that they can communicate it so well with absolutely everybody. And of course he gave his speech in french, which was was great. Its interesting, helen, isnt it . Because france is a republic, famously, but they you say there that they were euphonc say there that they were euphoric to see our royal family. So its something that perhaps sometimes we have our tensions with the french, but perhaps our royal family is something that brings us closer. What do you say . What do you say . I would say yes. I think really the french have always loved our royal family and this is going back years. And i have is going back years. And i have to say, each time king charles and now Queen Camilla go to france. I always think, oh, france. I always think, oh, goodness, you know how is it going to go . Because they are such royalists, a big proportion of them that they used to you know, they love Princess Diana. So there was always a slight edge with camilla. But this visit proves that people have moved on and theyre really happy to see charles and camilla and Princess Diana obviously is something of the past. I also always think that charles must always think that charles must always feel it going to france , always feel it going to france, because, of course, he had to travel back with dianas body. Travel back with dianas body. But, um , theres so many people but, um, theres so many people wanting to, you know , have be wanting to, you know, have be part of our, our royal family, really. So it is a surprise. But its there and its a this trip was proof in the pudding. Yeah. I was proof in the pudding. Yeah. I mean it has was proof in the pudding. Yeah. I mean it has been yeah. I mean it has been lovely to see, but its also been interesting helen hasnt it , to almost sort of compare and contrast in a way because obviously things being done in a way that that certainly the Queen Elizabeth did, did it in her own way. She had her own style and was perhaps a little bit more aloof in how she would deal with things and how she was approached. But we are getting approached. But we are getting even if only slightly , a bit even if only slightly, a bit more of a of a hands on royal family. Now arent we . Definitely, definitely. And i definitely, definitely. And i think king charles, the way he talks with everybody , he has talks with everybody, he has Something Special to say to everybody, makes everyone feel very special and that hands on approach , um, definitely works. Approach, um, definitely works. And its the way forward for our royal family yeah, its nice to see them evolve. I think helen really good to see you this morning. Thanks very much indeed. Am i dont know. I just i really like the approach shes taking. Do you think they should be hands on . Because some would say they be. You know , whats they should be. You know, whats they should be. You know, whats the word . Distant, distant in their regal ness . Yes. But they are slightly distant. Are they . Its all relative. A little relative. Theyre just a little bit hands on. Yeah. Theyre bit more hands on. Yeah. Theyre not mate . No but not your best mate . No but i just. I dont know. Ijust. Ive really warmed to. To king charles. I just think hes. Hes hes become the man , if you know hes become the man, if you know what i mean. Well, the daily star is taking a different angle on their front page. Theyre saying that he should keep schtum about Climate Change because hes off on a private jet. Theyre calling him the man of hypocrisy. Is that harsh . Well, because he had to, he says, lie to warning us peasants about Global Warming and then p0ps about Global Warming and then pops on a private to jet travel 300 miles. What do you say to that, steve . Well, so, look, if there was a security leak, he was meant to be going to from paris to bordeaux on the train, wasnt he . And there was a security leak. So they to get on the leak. So they had to get on the plane. But its the is that plane. But its the king is that whats meant to do . Hes not whats he meant to do . Hes not going to get on the eurostar standard class with the rest of us, is he . He just isnt. Youve got to be realistic got youve got to be realistic about things. About these things. Stephen says him his stephen says let him have his private jet. Say let him what he i say let him do what he wants. He is the king. Yeah, fair enough. Fair enough. People would allow the queen the have done the late queen, to have done what wanted. Well, exactly. What she wanted. Well, exactly. Travel in style. Quite right. Now, lets yeah, quite right. Now, lets see weathers going to see what the weathers going to do today. Heres do for you today. Heres alex. That warm feeling inside from boxt boilers proud sponsors of weather on gb news good morning, im alex deakin. This is your latest weather update from the met office for gb news news. Good looking day out there today. Its a bit chilly out there. First thing this morning. Tomorrow its going windy going to turn windy and particularly in the west. Quite a lot wetter. Its not completely dry this morning. 1 or 2 showers grazing or 2 showers just grazing Eastern England and across the Northern Isles where its still quite , too. The quite blustery, too. But the winds ease a little winds will ease down a little through the showers through the day and the showers in should clear. For in the east should clear. For the majority, it is fine, the vast majority, it is fine, dry, bright with some sunshine, albeit that sunshine turning hazy and northern hazy for wales and Northern Ireland. With some rain coming into Northern Ireland on, into Northern Ireland later on, temperatures recovering after that chilly start this that chilly start by this afternoon the teens, maybe afternoon into the teens, maybe the high teens in the south. The wet weather, though, will push into Northern Ireland and then into Northern Ireland and then into parts of scotland during this evening and then into wales as well, and likely to linger in parts of the west through the night indeed for much of night and indeed for much of sunday. Rain doesnt really get into the midlands or southern parts england generally parts of england generally staying it be staying dry here and it wont be as cold as tonight as the night just theres more just gone because theres more cloud winds will be cloud and the winds will be picking so sunday picking up. So sunday sees further at parts of further rain at times. Parts of north west england and especially of scotland especially parts of scotland looking soggy where we do have met Office Yellow warnings in place, also parts of north place, but also parts of north wales, Northern Ireland could see heavy and persistent see pretty heavy and persistent rain of tomorrow rain for most of tomorrow afternoon. Further afternoon. Patchy rain further south and many central and eastern parts will again just be dry and bright. Tomorrow it will be windier, but its going be windier, but its also going to warmer with temperatures to be warmer with temperatures in or maybe 20 degrees. That warm feeling inside from boxt boilers proud sponsors of weather on. Gb news. Weather on. Gb news. Yes. Coming up, we have sports broadcaster aidan magee with us in the studio. Hes going to talk to us about the rugby. England faced chile today in the world cup. Is gb news. It is 626. Youre watching and listening to breakfast with stephen and emily. Yes. Lets have a look at some other stories coming into the newsroom this morning. Mps have called on the government to support under pressure households ahead of new energy of an inevitable new Energy Crisis this winter. The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee, thats catchy , said ministers thats catchy, said ministers must make sure that all families who didnt feel the benefit of last years £400 per household help get that money now. Energy pnces help get that money now. Energy prices on the wholesale market have dropped since last winter, but in practise many households will be paying the same, or perhaps even more this winter. Now its been a good year for the british wine harvest. Thats according to the royal horticultural society. Experts believe that Climate Change is extending and growing the season and causing a boom for the uks wine industry. A wet and cool midsummer sandwiched between hot, sunny periods in june and september , has given vineyards september, has given vineyards the of rain and the right amount of rain and sunshine. How lovely there you go. Uk holidaymakers planning winter will pay winter sun holidays will pay less for tourist items in the vast majority of destinations compared to last year. Thats to according the post office because sterlings value has against many long haul currencies , particularly those currencies, particularly those in the far east. Im pretty well the report found inflation has not been as significant in many long haul destinations as it was in europe. Aiden is here with in europe. Aiden is here with all the sport. Morning. Morning good morning to you both. Good to see you. What have we got . What have we got . Well, lets look at the Rugby World Cup this weekend. I mean, in golf, we might call this moving day. Thats a common phrase you in a different phrase you hear in a different sport, think applies sport, but i think it applies nicely rugby this weekend nicely to rugby this weekend because seeing because at last were seeing some games of some really decent games of rugby. I wouldnt class englands chile in that englands tie with chile in that category. Expecting them to englands tie with chile in that catequite expecting them to englands tie with chile in that catequite comfortably hem to englands tie with chile in that catequite comfortably because win quite comfortably because theyve done most hard work. 9 made e 9 made 12 changes work. Made 12 changes with theyve made 12 changes with the death. The kiss of death. Yeah, i know, and ive done that as havent i . That before as well, havent i . Yeah, you have. Yeah, you have. On smith a couple of on liam smith a couple of weeks ago. The boxer. We wont go there. 12 changes for england. Borthwicks go there. 12 changes for englandto borthwicks go there. 12 changes for englandto bringyorthwicks go there. 12 changes for englandto bring back icks go there. 12 changes for englandto bring back owen decided to bring back owen farrell suspended a farrell who was suspended with a dangerous a good dangerous tackle. So its a good chance bring him back in when chance to bring him back in when the pressures kind of off. Marcus a mercurial marcus smith, a mercurial playmaking not trusted marcus smith, a mercurial playm the |g not trusted marcus smith, a mercurial playmthe previous not trusted marcus smith, a mercurial playmthe previous coach, sted marcus smith, a mercurial playmthe previous coach, eddie under the previous coach, eddie jones, who now, of jones, who have now who now, of course with australia. He course is with australia. But he gets to show what he gets the chance to show what he can and at it, look can do. And looking at it, look at argentina game two weeks ago. You which was you look at japan, which was fairly last week. Fairly formulaic last week. England, i think have done enough get to the enough to get through to the quarterfinals. I think quarterfinals. And i think thats the best thing that can hope get hope for right now. They get through stages. They hope for right now. They get throinto stages. They hope for right now. They get throinto the stages. They hope for right now. They get throinto the knockouts. ;. They hope for right now. They get throinto the knockouts. Anything get into the knockouts. Anything can happen. A big game can happen. They are a big game side. And in previous tournaments, two side. And in previous tournacup ts, two side. And in previous tournacup finals two side. And in previous tournacup finals without two world cup finals without necessarily expecting them do necessarily expecting them to do so. Lets they can do so. So lets hope they can do that. And then, of course, theyve got a massive game today. South africa against ireland, today. South africa against irelancireland are world number world. Ireland are world number one, willing to ready to justify their position. But is their position. But this is interesting because the loser faces the prospect of playing france in the quarters final without antoine dupont. Now, without antoine dupont. Now, just to give you some kind of context here, back in the back in the look at the french world cup in 1998, its the equivalent of facing france without their main man, zinedine zidane. Its easy a, no, z, z, z, z, z, z, z top easy a, no, z, z, z, z, z, z, z top as he was, because he obviously won the world cup, didnt he . So honestly, the booby prize could actually be more be more enticing than the actual winning of the match actual the winning of the match today. A bit peculiar today. So its a bit peculiar because if you face france without antoine youre without antoine dupont, youre not france side not facing the best france side you get. And think, you can get. And i still think, given that home nation, given that the home nation, france, the favourites. Yeah, well, youd think so, wouldnt you think just wouldnt you . Do you think just briefly, do think how briefly, where do you think how far england will go this . Briefly, where do you think how far ingland will go this . Briefly, where do you think how far i thinkd will go this . Briefly, where do you think how far i think england this . Briefly, where do you think how far i think england are his . Briefly, where do you think how far i think england are as . Briefly, where do you think how far i think england are a big i think england are a big enough nation, a bit like australia having a wretched time, but theyre big enough nafion time, but theyre big enough nation the favourites nation where the favourites wouldnt in wouldnt want to face them in the phases. Went wouldnt want to face them in the this phases. Went wouldnt want to face them in the this tournament went wouldnt want to face them in the this tournament with went wouldnt want to face them in the this tournament with no ant into this tournament with no form whatsoever. Theyve actually people. Actually surprised a few people. Theyve actually surprised, surprised theyve surprised a few people. Theyve done this before. Two thousand and seven. Awful start, but got to were to the final where they were narrowly beaten by south africa. But think winner but i still think the winner will either south will come from either south africa i dont fancy africa or ireland. I dont fancy france much. I think the france as much. I think the pressure might get to them. Yeah well, we shall see. Shall see. Mystic magee is we shall see. Mystic magee is often as well. We shall see. Mystic magee is often wrong as well. We shall see. Mystic magee is often wrong as as well. We shall see. Mystic magee is often wrong as well. Well. We shall see. Mystic magee is often wrong as well. Yeah. Fair often wrong as well. Yeah. Fair too. You a little bit too. Well see you a little bit later, aidan, very much later, aidan, thanks very much indeed. 630. Lets just indeed. It is 630. Lets just remind you of the top stories this morning. Well, hs2 ever gets chichester leeds gets a man, chichester and leeds for street for that matter. Downing street preparing scrap the second preparing to scrap the second leg of the High Speed Railway from both boris from birmingham. Both Boris Johnson and David Cameron have warned mutilating the line warned that mutilating the line would be insanity. Yes, and a Ukrainian Missile attack has hit the headquarters of russias black sea fleet , leaving the black sea fleet, leaving the Main Building in flames. And a serviceman missing. And a serviceman missing. And a serviceman missing. Mps are calling on the government to provide more support under pressure support for under pressure families what they families ahead of what they called inevitable new Energy Called an inevitable new Energy Crisis this winter. Coming up later in the program, the International Week of happiness at work starts on monday. Are you happy with your job . Well, of course we are delighted that goes without saying. As you can tell all. Still to come, should the next generation be banned from smoking . Were going to be talking about that in our headune talking about that in our headline makers in just a good morning to you. It is 633. Whether youre watching on tv online, listening on gb news radio. This is breakfast with stephen and emily. It is indeed so lets bring you up to date with the front pages. The sun is leading with prince harry rejecting an offer from king charles to stay at balmoral during the anniversary of death. Of the queens death. Times this morning, for the times this morning, the minister is apparently the Prime Minister is apparently on with on a collision course with former leaders over hs2 , as former leaders over hs2, as weve been reporting today. Yes, the guardian says rishi sunak is considering banning the next generation from smoking , which generation from smoking, which could be one of the Worlds Toughest anti smoking measures. The mail has a tragic and the mail has a tragic teenager who fought doctors attempts to withdraw her life support until till her death can finally be named. Finally be named. Lets talk through some of those headlines and lots of other stuff as well with former daily star editor and of course, one of our very own dawn neesom and the legendary broadcaster, David Hamilton. David hamilton. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Nice to see you both this morning. Can we have a look . Morning. Can we have a look . Because weve been talking about it this morning already, the smoke, the smoking ban, david, the picked up on this smoke, the smoking ban, david, the lots picked up on this smoke, the smoking ban, david, the lots of picked up on this smoke, the smoking ban, david, the lots of other ked up on this smoke, the smoking ban, david, the lots of other papers on this smoke, the smoking ban, david, the lots of other papers as this and lots of other papers as well. The idea that we the pm wants to sort of phase the legal age of smoking, wants to raise it every year so that you have a whole generation. Ann, that just can never do it. Can never do it. Yeah, this is similar to measures that have been brought in in new zealand and i think possibly australia as well. New zealand brought this in last december , increasing the legal. December, increasing the legal. Smoking age so that tobacco would never be sold to anyone born. Apparently after january the first, 2009, in my opinion, if you ban anything , you make it if you ban anything, you make it more exciting. Yeah, but you also. You smoked for a long time, didnt you . I did, yeah. I i gave up smoking when i was 50, when my oldest friend died of cancer and i went to the London Hospital and i saw a young man dying of cancen and i saw a young man dying of cancer. And it was shock that that was shock tactics that stopped me smoking. Best thing i ever did. I dont think i would be here today right now. Well, see, this is the thing. Its a tough one because its a bit big brother. I mean, julian in yorkshire has been in touch and said hi. Julian says, as much as i dont agree with banning choice as banning freedom of choice as i do think theres a strong case to out smoking. I wish to phase out smoking. I wish someone stopped it took someone had stopped me. It took a Myocardial Infarction a massive Myocardial Infarction , heart attack to , effectively a heart attack to make to be make me stop. Im lucky to be alive. Lucky to be able to send alive. Lucky to be able to send this email. Smoking is a killer. Is a killer. And my dad it is a killer. And my dad died of lung cancer and he was a smoker. He was also a lorry dnven smoker. He was also a lorry driver, could have been driver, so it could have been lorry fumes. But i bannau anything makes me very twitchy. Anything makes me very twitchy. I dont want the government micromanage my life any more than they absolutely had to experience it during covid, where were literally where they were literally telling you how to walk down the street. Yes, its a killer, but i also worry about banning Something Like this. You would just people are going to just if people are going to smoke, going smoke. Smoke, theyre going to smoke. If people do drink, theyre going drink. It drives it going to drink. It drives it under it fuels the under underground. It fuels the black economy. It black economy. It helps criminals, money. Criminals, makes money. It didnt they didnt they always say that about even banning it from pubs and nightclubs the of nightclubs and all the rest of it, that wouldnt have an it, that it wouldnt have an impact. Unfair. It has impact. It was unfair. It has actually had a big impact on the number people smoking. Actually had a big impact on the nurlots people smoking. Actually had a big impact on the nurlots of people smoking. Actually had a big impact on the nurlots of people are king. Actually had a big impact on the nurlots of people are vaping lots of people are vaping now, arent they . Thats whats happening and you know, is happening now. And you know, is vaping you know, is it. Well, its better than smoking, better than smoking. Lesser of two evils. Yeah. We dont long term data on it, dont have long term data on it, but people do say its 95 less harmful. Harmful. But what about the practicalities of this where you have , i dont know, potentially have, i dont know, potentially a 39 year old not being allowed to buy cigarettes, but then a 40 year old being allowed to because of the age barrier. How are you going . How are you going . How are you going to enforce it . Its to going be its going to be quite difficult , it . Its to going be its going to be quite difficult, isnt it . Its to going be its going to be quite difficult , isnt it . To be quite difficult, isnt it . I think, to enforce it. Its one of those ideas that sounds great, in practise its very great, but in practise its very difficult, i think, and its not like anyone ever fakes an id, is it . I mean, what are young people are smoking less anyway . Are smoking less anyway . I think what you need to do is get across the message of how harmful smoking is. And you harmful smoking is. Yes. And you know, i said in my case, you know, i said in my case, you know, it was the shock of seeing people dying of cancer. Obviously, not everybody sees that. Somehow other weve that. But somehow other weve got rather than banning it, i think weve got to get across the message that, you know, i mean smoking is one thing that just doesnt do you any good at all. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Theres no actual benefit to it. But carrot rather than stick, i think, on this one. Okay. Well, keep your thoughts coming through. Gb views at gb news. Com um, can we talk about Russell Brand and in the yes, we have to. Oh yes, if we have to. Russell brand has put one of his his videos out that he does this was what started the whole thing wasnt put video out when wasnt he put a video out when he about the he was approached about the allegations the sex assaults allegations of the sex assaults and allegation was he put a and Rape Allegation was he put a video out denying it. So he has put another video out talking how his face an extraordinary and distressing week. Now well, fine. Fair enough. Yes. But what fine. Fair enough. Yes. But what about the extraordinary, distressing weeks his alleged victims have had as well . Im sorry. I just think this is poor little me. And he is begging fans to support him on on on a rumble channel. Its like you can subscribe to this channel for 60 or whatever. So you have to pay for it. So you have to pay for it. You have to pay. You dont get nothing. An advert wasnt it dawn with my sceptical hat on, i just saw it as an advert for his rumble account so that he can keep making money because of course we had the extra ordinary event of i think of caroline dinenage. I think thats pronounce her thats how you pronounce her surname. The chair the surname. The chair of the Digital MediaCulture Select committee. Know, to committee. You know, writing to rumble, to tiktok, rumble, writing to tiktok, saying, know , should you be saying, you know, should you be monetising him essentially trying to get him cancelled . This is a plea for more money, isnt it . Really . Really . It is. It is. The thing that worries me about Russell Brand is that hes described a comedian. Described as a comedian. Yeah. Well, yeah. Well, yeah. What sort of worries me, i mean, hes never made me laugh. Has made laugh . Mean, hes never made me laugh. Hasno. Made laugh . No. No. Make people laugh. Make people laugh. Make you laugh . Does he make you laugh . Does he make you laugh . No, because its not my well, no, because its not my cup tea. Cup of tea. But you cant deny how but no, you cant deny how popular he was at his peak. We actually went to see him live many ago. And im not live many years ago. And im not a prude way, shape or a prude in any way, shape or form, but some of jokes were form, but some of the jokes were or really i mean , look, or were really i mean, look, comedy is comedy, okay . But some of the jokes i found really offensive. If there a joke offensive. If there was a joke he tells about a cat and im not even to describe what he even going to describe what he was describing in this joke and yeah, and it was pretty vile. Yeah, and it was pretty vile. And i just think that if thats the sort of person you are, well, this isnt over in any case for. Well lets have a look at him. Lets have a quick look. Hello there you are. Awakening wonders. Obviously, its been an extraordinary and distressing and i thank you distressing week and i thank you very your support and very much for your support and for questioning the information that youve been presented with by that youve been presented with by now, youre probably aware that the British Government have asked big tech platforms to censor our online content and that some Online Platforms have complied with that request. Complied with that request. Well, you may not know is that this happens in the context of the Online Safety bill, which is a piece of uk legislation that grants sweeping surveillance and censorship powers. And its a law that has already been passed i and, um, well , there you go. And, um, well, there you go. And, um, well, there you go. Its interesting how he bnngsin its interesting how he brings in the Online Safety bill because people do have genuine, genuine concerns about the Online Safety bill. But im not sure where it fits in with what hes talking about. No, no, i dont know. No, no, i dont know. But look, allegations have been made. Hes denied them. Been made. Hes denied them. Police are now got a file. Police are now got a file. Exactly that. So, yeah , im a exactly that. So, yeah, im a great believer in innocent until proved guilty and he hasnt been proved guilty and he hasnt been proved guilty and he hasnt been proved guilty of anything yet so lets just wait and see. Well, exactly. Well, exactly. So you do have to question how hes going to get a fair trial, though, with all this already out there. If it does go to court. If it does go to court. Well, you know , speaking to a well, you know, speaking to a barrister who said exactly that , a free and fair , could he have a free and fair trial now with all the press, itd be very hard to find a jury that hadnt seen all of the coverage, wouldnt it . Coverage, wouldnt it . Exactly. That it really would i it would. Whats the express saying about the david . Saying about the pm, david . Well well, the express is saying on the front page only true. Tory values can save the partys soul ahead of next weeks Party Conference in manchester. Grand these are demanding pulling britain out of the european human rights treaty so that the government can finally stop the boats. Yes. So finally stop the boats. Yes. So thats one of the i mean , it thats one of the i mean, it sort of reeks of desperation , sort of reeks of desperation, doesnt it, really . I mean , its doesnt it, really . I mean, its going to be a rough ride this conference. Yeah, its not going to be fun. No, no. No, no. But the fact its in manchester as well with with the story about hs2 , its really not story about hs2, its really not going to go down well , story about hs2, its really not going to go down well, is it . I mean, and the doctors are striking over the course of the tory conference and what else is going on . Youve got something else. Oh train strikes as well. Yeah. So it could be a bit of a bit of a car crash. These conferences are always a bit depressing. Is it going to be is it going to be funny that theyre going to be funny that theyre going to be funny that theyre going to be striking during the tory conference, but probably not dunng conference, but probably not during the labour . No. Strike. Dont its political strike. Dont you are any you imply that there are any political reasons behind these strikes whatsoever . But suddenly, has come out suddenly, rishi has come out fighting, he saying suddenly, rishi has come out figithese he saying suddenly, rishi has come out figithese things,|e saying suddenly, rishi has come out figithese things, promising] all these things, promising everything. You know, had everything. You know, hes had months months of not seeming everything. You know, hes had m oh, but the problem youve got with stephen, is got with this one, stephen, is you boris, who had charisma you had boris, who had charisma by bucketful , but not many by the bucketful, but not many ideas, but not ideas. Ideas, but not many ideas. What happened then. And look what happened then. What want . Do we want what do we want . Do we want forensic nick barrister style . Hello, keir starmer or we hello, keir starmer or do we want personality . Want personality . We but this tends to happen, doesnt maggie doesnt it . We had Maggie Thatcher with charisma and then we had john major, who was charismatic. Yeah and, you know, thats the way it goes. Its change, isnt it . You know, we get fed up with too much charisma. I refuse to believe that we cant have a bit of both. Surely cant have a bit of both. Surely there are people out there with charisma and competence. We want some substance , dont we want some substance, dont we . I just cant think of one. You. Dawn. Dawn for Prime Minister. I quite like the idea that you have to have. Youve got to have a lot of charisma for your job. David but you to have substance as well. Yeah, well, id settle for half as long as you get halfway i so what do you. I mean, obviously because you are the elder statesman of the panel this morning. Yes. By far by far. Yes. By far by far. What do you what do you when you look back at all this and all the all the governments that youve seen, all the rest of it, do you ever just youve seen, all the rest of it, do you everjust hang your head do you ever just hang your head in and here we are in despair . And here we are again . Yes. Yes. Well, i think happens well, i think what happens is, you get a party is, you know, you get a party who are in for a long time and you get complacency that sets in and then start fighting you get complacency that sets in and thethemselves. Fighting you get complacency that sets in and thethemselves. Fighjust time among themselves. Its just time for change. And i think you know, what we have to question is going to be is whether change is going to be any see, ive any better. Well, you see, ive seen labour governments before and lived through that before and lived through that before and you know, it makes me wonder and you know, it makes me wonder and again , you know, we have and again, you know, we have another leader with zero charisma at least dividing lines are beginning to appear. Yeah , well thats true. Yeah, well thats true. Yeah, well thats true. There is a difference now between the two parties on some issues. Is that we know about. Issues. Is that we know about. Which is nice. Yeah its nice to know is what well be getting. Yeah, look, were going yeah, well, look, were going to you lot more. Well, to talk to you a lot more. Well, well find out eventually. Probably. Well talk to you, too. Lot more in just a too. A lot more in just a moment. But 645, run moment. But at 645, lets run you through top stories this you through the top stories this morning. It morning. Two, of course, is it ever to going get as far as manchester and leeds . Well downing preparing downing street preparing to scrap second of the high scrap the second leg of the high speed from birmingham. Both speed rail from birmingham. Both bofis speed rail from birmingham. Both boris and David CameronBoris Johnson and David Cameron warning that mutilating the line would be insanity. A Ukrainian Missile attack has hit the headquarters of russias black sea fleet, leaving the Main Building in flames and a serviceman missing and coming up later in the program, the International Week of happiness at work starts on monday. So are you happy with your job . What a question. Mps have what a question. Mps have called. Oh yes, mps have called on the government to hand out more support for households facing exorbitant energy costs. This winter. Yeah, the Energy Security in Net Zero Committee put that on a business card, would you . Said ministers must make sure that under pressure families can get some sort of support ahead of the cold spells. The government currently has no plans to subsidise everyones energy bills as they did last yeah and lets talk to business and finance broadcaster michael wilson. Good morning to you, michael. I wilson. Good morning to you, michael. I mean, look, its a its an honest question, isnt its an honest question, isnt it . Are we likely to see the it . Are we likely to see the government shell out . Government shell out . Well, it is a it is. Government shell out . Well, it is a it is. We are well, it is a it is. We are approaching an election, arent we . And this is this is this is supposed to be a joint committee as well. And its quite as well. And its quite a mouthful, isnt it . Not really. Snappily named as you were attempting wont bother. Attempting it. I wont bother. But said it. Thanks very but you said it. Thanks very much indeed, for stephen, attempting it. Yeah. I mean, the problem of course the problem is look, of course the headune problem is look, of course the headline from this particular report i think is that 1 in 4 families are still in what they describe as energy debt from from the last time it is going to be a tough winter. One of the other recommendations from this committee is to drop the standing charge, which is appued standing charge, which is applied to every bill, every energy bill standing charge. Youll see it described on your bill as the cost of bringing the energy to your house from the from the providers. They want they want that scrap. I suspect they want that scrap. I suspect this is one of these kind of things that will that will gradually disappear. And the real costs of, for example , real costs of, for example, things like this to be completely diminished by all the all the nets , zero costs and the all the nets, zero costs and the rest of it. I mean, were seeing these aspirations all the time from politicians. What chance of them actually happening . Them actually happening . Probably very little. Remember were only a year since the budget, which actually crashed the economy. Well, it didnt quite the economy is doing slightly better, but its still actually helped over these investors that britain was very sceptical. Sceptical. Yeah. Look michael, thank you for that. Good, good to get your thoughts on that. The lines a little bit dodgy michael so well leave it there. Youre just cutting in and out a little bit. Thank you. What do you reckon to this, david . Can the government do we do we expect government be do we do we expect the government to shell out to help during the winter as help us during the winter as its become too much of a can the government continue shelling out . We want the government to shell out about everything, dont we . I mean , you know, is dont we . I mean, you know, is there any money left in the in there any money left in the in the pot . Yeah. Can we just stop sending the government to shell out . Its our money. Yeah, its taxpayers money. Its not the governments yeah, its governments money. Yeah, its ouri mean, should get it back. Well, well, maybe we shouldnt give them so shouldnt give them quite so much in the first place. Well, that would be do well, that would be nice. Do youwell, apparently its. Well, apparently its. Theres possibility of any theres no possibility of any tax cuts coming way. No. Tax cuts coming our way. No. Right may as well take right so we may as well take what we can in the benefits on our energy bills. No, but i was a bit confused i thought a bit confused because i thought energy down. Energy costs were coming down. I thought was as thought that it was not as expensive as thought. This expensive as i thought. This winter going to better winter was going to be better than last but than last last winter. But apparently, apparently not. We having well, emily, arent we having global so it wont be so Global Warming so it wont be so cold . Global boiling, is it global boiling . Cant keep up. So put the so we wont need to put the heating on. I understand. I dont understand. I dont understand. I dont understand. I understand because i dont understand because the tariffs are coming down. I got email yesterday got an email only yesterday saying coming saying your tariff is coming down is all great down again. This is all great energy and Everything Else energy cap and Everything Else and yet my have gone up and yet my bills have gone up £75 the last month. £75 a month in the last month. Yeah, actually. Mentioned that i got now you mentioned that i got something that well. How Something Like that as well. How do that out . How do do they work that out . How do they do that . I dont know. I dont know. Mine is the same. Its like, you know. Yeah, good news. Its all coming down. But heres all coming down. Oh, but heres your bill and were all coming down. Oh, but heres your your3ill and were all coming down. Oh, but heres your your direct d were all coming down. Oh, but heres your your direct debite all coming down. Oh, but heres your your direct debit up to putting your direct debit up to cover the additional costs. Yeah. I dont know. Yeah. Yeah. I dont know. Yeah. Yeah. I dont know. They it i think they make it purposefully confusing to understand bills. Understand their bills. Try hey you can always try phoning on the help phoning them up on the help line. No, no. Because no one line. No no, no. Because no one ever as ever. Ever answers as ever. I think be quite well, i think itd be quite difficult, it . I think the difficult, isnt it . I think the Energy Price Cap has something to do with the issues were facing. Artificially facing. You artificially put a cap the price. This is cap on the price. Is this is getting bit cheeky, is it . Getting a bit cheeky, is it . No, no, no. No, no, no. Artificially put a cap on the on prices. That on the prices. Yes. And that meant that lot of suppliers meant that a lot of suppliers went bust. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. And then now we dont have much had booming much choice. We had a Booming Energy now we dont Energy Market and now we dont really that choice. Really have that much choice. Going as well now petrol going up as well now havent is going up havent we. Petrol is going up as well. Honestly. Honestly. Down for a little while came down for a little while and back again. And now back up again. Back at 159. I paid the other day. I just couldnt believe it. I dont thankfully, i i dont drive thankfully, so i know its one thing i dont have to pay out for. No wonder youre rolling cash. Rolling in cash. Absolutely loaded. Im absolutely so loaded. Obviously yes. Can talk . Universe david, can we talk . Universe david, this really gets my go. This is a awoke university banning the army from the freshers fair. Yeah. This is a very weird story, hasnt it . The defence secretary has snapped back at bristol student union. After a controversial union. After a controversial decision to ban an army affiliated group from attending the University Freshers fair grant shapps said the decision to turn away the Officers Training corps was absurd and in defensible, claiming it would depnve defensible, claiming it would deprive students of opportunities to gain new experiences, develop valuable skills and have amazing adventures. The question is why would anybody do that . Why would anybody want to ban them . Do you know what i went to Bristol University. Did you . And when i was there, i think i missed this sort of woke stuff. I was going to say, its why youve come out and such a woke character and youre such a woke character. No, i didnt actually get involved in any of the student politics. I was too having politics. I was too busy having a time at all the a good time at all the nightclubs and whatever else. But why would you do it . Why would you . Why would you . Because theyre anti military. Because theyre anti the uk having type of foreign having any type of foreign policy. And you know, theyre of policy. And you know, theyre of the jeremy that we the Jeremy Corbyn type that we should all be complete pacifists when weve got a war going on in europe, sort of like about a three hour flight. Thats what they think. They think thats a idea. Think thats a good idea. Theyre theyre idealistic, arent welcome to arent they . Welcome, welcome to the real world. 5 the real world. You know, theres a real world there. World out there. What annoys me is the fact its so long list of things that annoy you. But its i just it yes. But its i just find it so disrespectful, awful to those who and those who who are serving and those who have served, which is the very reason live woke reason they can live a woke lifestyle now. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Dont get do well, they dont get that, do they . They look at they . Because they look at british and its history british britain and its history and see all as bad. And just see it all as bad. The thing is, right, these so the thing is, right, these are future. Are the future. Surely go to university, surely you go to university, obviously go to university surely you go to university, ob study. go to university surely you go to university, ob study. But go to university surely you go to university, ob study. But to o to university surely you go to university, ob study. But to meet niversity surely you go to university, ob study. But to meet otherity to study. But to meet other people, to indulge in debate, to come across people that you have. You know, youve got Different Exchange ideas is how old fashioned. Yeah exactly how terribly old fashioned. But these are the future generations who are going running this who are going to be running this country a few years time. And country in a few years time. And they are wrapping themselves up in no ones in cotton wool. No ones actually it. Theyre actually doing it. Theyre wrapping so wrapping themselves up in so much when they come much cotton wool when they come out face real life, out and they face real life, its to a real wake up its going to be a real wake up call. Also, armies like has armies like has so also, the armies like has so many opportunities for graduates and you know, its fantastic. You know career yeah. You know career yeah. Emily its discipline. It emily its discipline. It teaches you discipline. It teaches you discipline. It teaches you discipline. It teaches you respect. It teaches you so many. I mean, as you know, steven, i mean, your lovely other half. I mean, you know, his time. You know, he served his time. You know, he served his time. You know, so much know, it teaches you so much more than just military and fighting. Mean, its ridiculous. Ive got tell you, i did ive got to tell you, i did two National Service. Did you . Did you . Did you . Yes, i did. I was in the last lot that did National Service in the raf and i think it would be brilliant if they brought it back because it turned back again because it turned boys into men. Back again because it turned boyyeah. Men. Back again because it turned boyand|. Men. Back again because it turned boyand atnen. Back again because it turned boyand at that time they had the and at that time they had the teddy boys and they. Were teddy boys and they. They were all out. The first thing all singled out. The first thing they they their hair they did was they got their hair cut and knock them into shape. But of course they wouldnt do it would be too expensive. Live well, i suppose it would, right . But i mean, i agree. I think sometimes and especially when you look at some of problems you look at some of the problems where with the where that we have with the youth, all, of course, but youth, not all, of course, but with some, you just yeah, it knocks you into shape a bit. It shows you what youre responsible abilities. Are you thinking of people like mizzy the tiktok terror. Oh well yeah doing a bit of National Service. Well, it would do him good. Well, ill give him a bit of direction. Well, exactly. Rather than running into peoples homes and shops and jumping cars and its like jumping on cars and its like and people are going, oh, thats really funny, isnt it . Lets like what . Yeah, i stopped doing all like what . Yafterl stopped doing all like what . Yafterl stcnationaling all like what . Mick jagger and how amazing hair is to be that amazing his hair is to be that natural, oh, natural, lush auburn colour. Oh, yeah, mean, yes, natural, lush auburn colour. Oh, yeah, mean, yes , he should. He should be like the rest of us and go silver fox. He should do, shouldnt he. Bnan he should do, shouldnt he. Brian may did it. He, he stopped dyeing his didnt he. Oh, now the smoking issue. The pm is looking at. I mean, hes considered this before. Now hes considered this before. Now he looks like hes going to bnng he looks like hes going to bring back this idea of banning smoking for a generation. So not all at once, but the legal age at which you can buy cigarettes increasing year on so it increasing year on year. So it would be what would the year be . No. One born after 2009. So i think 14 year old no. So i think 14 year old no. Yes. No maybe. Oh, i dont know. Whatever the whatever the year is, say 2009. So no one born after that date would be able to ever buy a cigarette. Gary in bournemouth says , take gary in bournemouth says, take away your own personal opinion of smoking. This is a group of people deciding what you can or cannot do. I find it odd. Cannot do. I find it odd. Yeah, i think its a bit too much. Who said this . Sharon says the governments being a bit too far. Right. I would call it more a dictatorship. Surely up a dictatorship. Surely its up to whether they smoke or not. Yeah, but then here, sharon, we know bad us, but we all know its bad for us, but then up to to us pay for it. When people have smoking related illnesses which cost the nhs a lot of money, well, perhaps question perhaps thats a question about the nhs rather than smoking habits. Mike in newport says total time and effort. Total waste of time and effort. Its currently illegal to buy tobacco 16. Has it gone to tobacco under 16. Has it gone to 18 now . I think it might have gone to 18 now, but how many under 16 currently 16. It used to be 16. It used to be 16. Wow. That does seem things change and you catch up with them very quickly, dont you . Yeah, because remember going yeah, because i remember going to you know, everyone to france and you know, everyone was inside and it seemed was smoking inside and it seemed seemed wild , really, i suppose. Seemed wild, really, i suppose. Yeah. I mean, seemed wild, really, i suppose. Yeah. I mean, i seemed wild, really, i suppose. Yeah. I mean, i remember we yeah. I mean, i remember we used to go to the pub and i mean every time you went out at the weekend, you used to come back stinking of. But some people say, you know, was freedom. Know, that was freedom. Yeah, but it was also a bit of an imposition. Yeah. I mean, this is something i used to smoke in the newsroom and all back newsroom and all that back at itn and that sort of thing. Itn and all that sort of thing. Back the day, everyone did back in the day, everyone did ashtrays on the desk next to your computers. The pubs had the i remember the pubs had the smoking room and the family room, they . Smoking room and the family r0010h, they . Smoking room and the family r0010h, not ay . Boris johnson wading into the ongoing hs2 row after the government has refused to promise that it will help level up the north west of england. Up the north west of england. Yes, it was always a controversial project act, but now there is no guarantee that it will even get to manchester and may go no further than birmingham. Yeah, the southern end might not even get as far as euston. Bofis not even get as far as euston. Boris johnson says its being mutilated. Mutilated. Hes not wrong, is he . Hes not wrong, is he . Well, hes not. Lets see what our Political CorrespondentCatherine Forster, can tell us this morning. I mean, look for anyone who supported the project, which is hugely expensive and hugely controversial, the argument always was, well, its connect ing the north, the north doesnt seem to be getting any of it looking like it wont connect the north at all. And of course, lots of people would say it shouldnt all be about getting to and from london quicker. It should maybe be about getting across the north. But given the amount of money that has been spent, clearly its going to be built to birmingham. But we heard a year or so ago the branch to leeds not happening and now it looks very likely that the branch to manchester not happening either. And even coming into london and this i think is just astonishing. The government are seriously considering stopping at Old Oak Common because the costs of taking it right through to euston would be astronomic. To euston would be astronomic. So youd get off at Old Oak Common. Youd then have to get on the elizabeth. Neither do i. And ive lived here for like 30 odd years and its a west london, north west london. You then have to get the elizabeth line. Which begs the question, why wouldnt you just get a train from central to train from Central London to birmingham first place . Birmingham in the first place . But basically think is but basically, i think this is showing rishi sunak a treasury mindset that the costs are huge. George hes thinking of ways to save money, but a lot of people, Boris Johnson saying very loudly, its been mutilated. But David Cameron, George Osborne , michael gove all George Osborne, michael gove all said to be very much opposed to this. Were going to end up with a rump of hs2 potentially from Old Oak Common to birmingham and what is the point of that . What is the point of that . Yeah, and Old Oak Common looking up to its near acton. Yeah. Next to next to yeah. Next to next to wormwood scrubs. Wormwood scrubs. Its not exactly where you want to get to when you come to london. No offence to that area but its not Central London. No its not Central London and of course, as i think you were reading a view from a viewer that had sent in what about looking back with about perhaps looking back with the benefit of hindsight at starting it in the north, because transport in the north really has been neglected for a very long time. Theres 16 Million People live in the north of england. And frankly, if you live in london, transport is entirely different. The transport times between manchester and leeds on the train have barely changed in about 50 years. It takes people all ages and all the potential of all the people in the north of all the people in the north of england that could be built uponif of england that could be built upon if they could just get from a to b more easily. So all the questions about levelling up and of course, Boris Johnson got that 80 seat majority, didnt he largely get brexit done . But largely get brexit done . But largely on a promise to level up the north and areas out of london and you know, theres been all these talk about high speed rail between liverpool and leeds or potentially hull. Well were still waiting and yet they managed to build the elizabeth line also massively overbudget, hugely over budget. But the hugely over budget. But the elizabeth line gets built in london, which is already chock a block of fabulous transport. Yeah. So so is this effectively scrapping it by the back door . Is this effectively back door . Is this effectively the pm saying were not going to actually get rid of hs2 too . Its too expensive. Well just its too expensive. Well just continue with a bit that weve done to save face. Well, it seems to. It was well, it seems to. It was a wise shape, wasnt it . So you went london to birmingham, birmingham to leeds or birmingham to leeds or birmingham to leeds or birmingham to manchester. So to two of the bits of the why have potentially gone. Youre left with a little bit at the bottom and not even all of that. If it doesnt go. So youre left with a small amount. Think it a very small amount. I think it would be questionable the benefits of old oak to common birmingham. Of course tens birmingham. But of course tens of billions already of billions are already committed. Committed. A lot of tory backed benches at least would like to see the whole thing scrapped, wouldnt they . They havent been they . I mean, they havent been quiet about it. No. Well, no. Well, no. And lots of people, i mean it was always controversial even before went up before the costs went up and up and but of course, and up. But also of course, these were made long these decisions were made long before the pandemic, long before peoples work habits changed. Long before people long before lots of people started working from home. Maybe on or a friday or on a monday or a friday or relocated and worked remotely. So theres huge expense. You can so theres huge expense. You can see why the government are concerned about the money. But i think what we what were left with, even people like the midlands mayor andy street, will be up in arms. Hes been a big supporter of this. And of supporter of this. And of course, it will end up in birmingham. But yeah, yeah. Okay. Catherine, thanks very much indeed. Keep your thoughts coming through on on this one. I mean , we did tony in suffolk, mean, we did tony in suffolk, didnt we . Joyce says scrap it. They should have built the northern stretch first. Yeah, she was saying. Which. Well, she was saying. Which. Well, that makes sense. But there you that makes sense. But there you go. Keep that makes sense. But there you go. Keep your thoughts coming through. Vaiews gbnews. Com. Now, President Biden has reportedly promised Vladimir Zelenskyy some long range tactical missile ls yes. Us media reported yesterday that biden made the pledge dunng that biden made the pledge during a bilateral summit at the white house on thursday, which was then followed by an announcement of a multi hundred Million Dollar package of american weapons and aid. Well, the us had been reluctant to the weapons, reluctant to supply the weapons, fearing that it could create an escalation action from russia. Escalation action from russia. So joining us this morning is chris newton, military historian and defence analyst. Thank you very much indeed forjoining us. Can you tell us a little bit more about these missiles that may or may not have been promised to ukraine . What what can they achieve . What are they . Yeah so these are Army TacticalMissile Systems. They effective , they enable the ukrainians to do more of what theyre doing already with the counteroffensive in terms of targeting , in counteroffensive in terms of targeting, in terms of counteroffensive in terms of targeting , in terms of targeting targeting, in terms of targeting targets which are of longer range so they can target the logistics hubs, command centres of the kind that has been attacked yesterday. It can attacked yesterday. It can attack troop concentration weapons in the rear. So this so these Missile Systems can can potentially disrupt command control , logistics and really control, logistics and really make life difficult for more difficult for the russians in terms of supply and command. Terms of supply and command. And could they turn the tide and a weapon in itself cant just be cant so turn the tide sort of decisively, but it will help ukraine in achieving , you help ukraine in achieving, you know, more effect in terms of , know, more effect in terms of, as i said, disrupting command and control and making life more difficult on on the battlefield. So and also their range their range is only slightly kind of further than the storm shadow cruise missiles, which we have been supplying. The ukrainians. So or at least the export range of those storm shadow missiles. Of those storm shadow missiles. So, so they so they can effectively add capability , you effectively add capability, you know, and make it easier for the ukrainians to do what theyre doing already in terms of attacking targets in the rear areas. Areas. Now, what message does this give to russia if they go ahead and give these types of weapons . Because the us had refrained from doing so, had they not, because of fears of escalation . Because of fears of escalation . Yeah i mean, the message it will give is that the us is still firmly committed to ukraine and supplying ukraine with the capable forces that that it needs. And it ultimately sends a message to the russians that the us still have that resolve. Now us still have that resolve. Now the fact that biden kind of dithered on that you know, it doesnt give you know , the most doesnt give you know, the most decisive kind of great impression to the russians. So that differ in that bit of indecision wasnt great in terms of demonstrating that. But the fact that the us has eventually doneit fact that the us has eventually done it and biden has eventually made made this decision then ultimately shows that the us is still committed in supplying ukraine with long range weapons, which it needs to achieve the effects that i outlined earlier. And so where does all this fit in then when we look at whats happened in terms of that attack on the black sea fleet within crimea, we understand and how does that change the overall picture. Picture. Again, it adds to that capability. It again, it adds to that capability. It enables the ukrainians to do more of those kinds of those kinds of attacks. And if you think of the target that was targeted , the that was targeted, the headquarters of the black sea fleet , the blacks, the black sea fleet, the blacks, the black sea fleet, the blacks, the black sea fleet commands not only naval assets in the area, but also air and ground assets in in crimea. And also in in southern ukraine as well. So so again, it assists ukraine in the counteroffensive which their main focus of the counteroffensive theyre attacking in different areas like bakhmut. But the main focus of the counteroffensive is the south. So again, it forces states, the ukrainians in in those operations in in the south, in zaporizhia oblast , and south, in zaporizhia oblast, and it facilitates their gradual advances that that they have been making over the past, especially over the past weeks, but over the past months as well. Okay chris, as always, really good to see you. Really good to see you. Thanks very much indeed. Thanks very much indeed. See you. Interesting stuff. See you. Interesting stuff. You work from home. A lot of people are doing it and say they like it. How i mean, from from a psychological point of view, is it actually that good . Its quite isolationist, isnt it . Quite isolationist, isnt it . Isnt it . Can be, but i think it is dependent on which industry youre working in. So im a psychologist, which means i see lots of people. 1 to 1 via Remote Technology , but i also do Remote Technology, but i also do little bits and pieces like writing books and writing for the media and recording podcasts where actually being by yourself and being quiet. It works and being quiet. It works a whole lot better. So i think it whole lot better. So i think it is probably person dependent, but also occupation dependent too. Do you think its good for Mental Health, though, because people do get into a putting on youh people do get into a putting on your, you know, your work clothes, getting out the door or regardless of what the weathers like, rigged gardless of whether you feel like it could be quite good for those who are suffering from, you know, down days and maybe anxiety and things. You know, youve got to get up, youve got to get out of the house. Youve got to then speak to your colleagues. Are you missing that, being at home all the time . The time . Speaking as a mother of two Young Children , i like the idea Young Children, i like the idea that im not up and about. Young children, i like the idea that im not up and about. Yeah, that im not up and about. Yeah, its not true. But for me, its not true. But for me, obviously having supported a lot of people who might have different physical health or Mental Health needs, people often find, you know, if theyve got high blood loss due to fibroids or Something Like that or lots of pain, they find that actually their Mental Health and physical Health Better physical health is better working from home it would working from home than it would be they were trying to work be if they were trying to work in workplace. So again, its in a workplace. So again, its person specific. Many people enjoy the benefits of working from home because it allows them to exercise in their workday as well. For me , that supports well. And for me, that supports my Mental Health and being able to pick up my children every day again supports my Mental Health and theirs. And theirs. I wonder, karim, what what your staff are like at the restaurant . I mean, whether i dont know what sort of age group they are, but i mean, i would have a concern in that there may be a general of younger people who actually dont know how to go to work. They dont know how to sort of get dressed, go out and present themselves properly for a for a day in the office or the restaurant or wherever it might be. We are very lucky. Weve got the most amazing bunch of group, a group of people i should say, working together. And we try and working together. And we try and make it really easy for people to come to work. So make it really easy for people to come to work. So that work make it really easy for people to come to work. So that work is actually a place they come to enjoy themselves as well as work. Because if its not fun, then people are not interested to come to work. So we try and make it as fun as possible and unlike a lot of businesses in our industry, we have much shorter hours. People can actually live a good life , have actually live a good life, have actually live a good life, have a good Work Life Balance. So we try and do everything we possibly can to accommodate people because we want happy people because we want happy people to come to work. People to come to work. Yes, well, you might win an award with with happiness at work week next week by the sound of it. Karim mariam, weve got to leave it there, but really good to see you. Thanks very much indeed. Thank you. Thank you. I worry about was going to i worry about i was going to ask marianne, but out of ask marianne, but we ran out of time there. But how about, you know, if everyone does their job from home, then whats stopping employers . Getting someone employers . Just getting someone cheaper i dont know, cheaper from i dont know, eastern europe, india . Yeah, but eastern europe, india . Yeah, but halfway across the world . Well, its a valid point. And i tell you, what struck me is karim was saying about, you know, they operate a good work balance. How do you Work Life Balance. How do you have work balance if work have a Work Life Balance if work is home . Is at home . You either end up well, you either end up working time or you working the entire time or you slack off completely. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Someone who never slacks off is our very own Stephanie Takyi i i i dont know about that. You you work seven days a week. I do. I do. Im a hardworking woman. Im a hardworking woman. And showbiz this morning, Russell Brand. I mean, its. Its a bit odd to sort of put me in a showbiz category. It is. It is. He made his name in showbiz, but obviously its bigger than showbiz. Now, what hes faced over the past week. Yeah but been speaking out against. Yes. Yes. Yes. Its the first time hes spoken out since that Dispatches Programme came out last programme which came out last saturday, which he was saturday, in which he was accused of rape, Sexual Assault and emotional abuse. So in a video that hes posted to rumble , he said hes faced an extraordinary and distressing week, is not surprising. Week, which is not surprising. But it seems like the show must go on for Russell Brand because hes told his 1. 4 million followers on there that he plans to be doing his first show on monday. But in the video, hes taken a dig at the government who have managed to get him demonetised from youtube. And this week, Dame Caroline dinenage, who is the chair of the sports culture and media committee, asks whether rumble will be demonetising and Russell Brands, which theyve refused. Brands, which theyve refused. We have a clip from russell here. Hello. There you are awakening wonders. Obviously its been an extraordinary and distressing week and i thank you very much for your support and for questioning the information that youve been presented with by now. Youre probably aware that the British Government have asked big tech platforms to censor our online content and that some Online Platforms have complied with that request. Complied with that request. Well, you may not know. Is that this happens in the context of the Online Safety bill, which is a piece of uk legislation that grants sweeping surveillance and censorship powers. And its a law that has already been passed i well, look, are we ready . Its interesting that he thanks people for questioning what he presented , which is a perfectly presented, which is a perfectly valid thing to do. Valid thing to do. Of course it is, because at the moment there is this saying thats been going around which has been infuriating a lot of people. But in this case, hes still innocent until proven guilty. Until to guilty. And until it gets to a court of law , which may court of law, which it may eventually do , Russell Brand eventually do, Russell Brand still right to make it still has a right to make it earnings. So its a big question at the moment whether parliament should be getting involved with Russell Brand and trying to take his money away. Whats quite well, whats quite interesting, people who have well, whats quite interevery|, people who have well, whats quite interevery anti ple who have well, whats quite interevery anti russell have well, whats quite interevery anti Russell Brand been very anti Russell Brand throughout this have said have made that their red line. Made that their red line. They dont agree with the fact that the government has got involved. Think it was a involved. Yeah, i think it was a real silly thing to do actually, from i think so as well because i you know, its i think, you know, its different he has been found different if he has been found guilty start this guilty, then we can start this debate about whether he should be career. Be having a career. The fact that these are but the fact that these are still allegations , she should still allegations, she should have respected that and knew that theres a line to draw there. So there are convicted criminals on youtube and rumble and tiktok , you know. And tiktok, you know. Well, once theyre out. Well, once theyre out. Well, once theyre out. Once theyre out. Once theyre out. Yeah. Yeah. Know but anyway, lets have a look at Sophie Turner who ive not heard ive not heard of. Yeah, but joe jonas, obviously the jonas brothers. Huge. Huge. Yeah, we know. Divorces are quite messy , let alone if its quite messy, let alone if its a hollywood divorce. And at the hollywood divorce. And at the moment, they announced their split at the beginning of the month. They said it was quite amicable, which again was just a pr stunt because now Sophie Turner is suing jojo us for the return of her two children to come back to the uk. Sophie, of course , is a british actress, course, is a british actress, but shes been living in america with joe. But at the moment their two kids are still there and shes saying shes accusing him of taking the passports for the two children, which means they cant return back to the uk. Its very ugly, uk. So its very ugly, especially when its kids involved. And youve got two big stars so it could get stars here. So it could get quite messy. But you know what . Joe jonas has the law on his side because he filed the divorce papers florida and divorce papers in florida and florida say that in the midst of the settlement, you cannot relocate the children. So thats what hes got on his side. Yeah. So theyre going to have to wait till it is finally settled in court. But he has his his rep has come out and said that they do not appreciate the harsh line that sophie is taking with this divorce. How old are the children . Do we know . Two four. Two and four. Two and four. So very young. Oh, so very young. Oh, so very young. Young. Yeah very young. Yeah very young. Yeah its a messy business. Oh, its a messy business. Oh, its a messy business. It is. It is. Steph, weve got leave it there. Well catch you guys. Thank you. Okay. Okay. Up next, weve got the headune up next, weve got the headline makers for you and more on prince harry rejecting were told his fathers plan to spend the anniversary of the queens death together either at balmoral. On your tv , radio and online. On your tv, radio and online. This is breakfast with stephen and emily. Good morning. And emily. Good morning. Good morning. Now joining us to go through some of the top headunes to go through some of the top headlines of the day is former daily star editor dawn neesom and Radio Television and radio and Television BroadcasterDavid Hamilton. Broadcaster David Hamilton. Should we have a look . Dawn at prince harry . We just touched on him a little while ago. On him a little while ago. According to the sun. According according to the sun. According to the sun, because there was all this hoo ha saying, well, harrys been rejected. Hes spending the queens anniversary of her death on his own. But of her death on his own. But apparently the king invited him to balmoral. Well, exactly. Yeah, we have to about harry occasionally to talk about harry occasionally , much as id , dont we . As much as id rather it is the front rather not, but it is the front page the sun, which sells page of the sun, which sells lots of copies. Obviously, lots of copies. And obviously, harry sell for them harry and meghan sell for them basically harry over basically, when harry was over here before the invictus here just before the invictus games, remember a couple of weeks doing an event weeks ago, he was doing an event in london and he requested to stay at any of the familys homes in london. The answer came back that, well, actually we all the servants are up in scotland because thats where the royal family are for the summer. But you are more than welcome to go up to balmoral to stay with your dad. And harry said no. So basically its been interpreted as being offered an olive branch by his dad and his wicked stepmother. Remember harry described her in that book as a villain. I mean, really , can you villain. I mean, really, can you imagine sitting around the breakfast table , frosty with breakfast table, frosty with that . I mean, yeah, it would have been frosty over the frosties. See yeah. Yeah. All right. All right. All right. Not have actually been that much a snob more than it was much of a snob more than it was out of his way. Well, two out of his way. Well, the thing was, he. He could fly how many thousands of well, the thing was, he. He could from w many thousands of well, the thing was, he. He could from california housands of well, the thing was, he. He could from california hordo nds of miles from california to do one eventin miles from california to do one event in london which lasted like or so, but he like an hour or so, but he couldnt fly 300 miles up to scotland to see his dad. Well, he could have spent a couple of hours with perhaps he was concerned about carbon footprint. 5 footprint. A shame, isnt it . Yeah, its a shame, isnt it . Its a family war. It is. And its a family at war. It is. And somebody needs to bury the hatchet. And without doubt , it needs and without doubt, it needs to be. Harry needs to come grovelling to grovelling back to us. Know they all need you know what they all need to david . They all need to to do, david . They all need to gather together with a gather around together with a cup bovril and work out their cup of bovril and work out their differences. But bovril is going out fashion. Out of fashion. Its funny, you should say that, mail that, because to according mail online, are ditching online, people are ditching bovnlin online, people are ditching bovril in favour of balsamic vinegar. You dont buy balsamic vinegar. I like balsamic vinegar , but i like balsamic vinegar, but ive got to tell you, i love bovnl ive got to tell you, i love bovril and it takes me back to when i was a boy. Football matches in the middle of winter, half time on a steaming hot cup of bovril. Absolutely wonderful. And i absolutely wonderful. And i actually have it on toast for breakfast. I have toast. Toast . Breakfast. I have toast. Toast . Yeah. Toast and butter and a sliver of bovril. But here is sliver of bovril. But here is the piece de resistance. Nice the piece de resistance. Nice jacket, potato with a nice firm jacket. Yeah, yeah , yeah. That one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That one. Butter and bovril , i reckon. Butter and bovril, i reckon. Know you wont have it. I wont have it. You wont eat anything. Thats beef. Ill have anything. Thats beef. Ill have it. Its similar to you havent had it have you. No, i havent had it. No, i havent had it. I may go home and make myself. Have you had marmite. Have you had marmite. Ive had marmite. Ive had marmite. Its similar to margaret. Marmite but its a little milder so one cup of hot so no one has a cup of hot marmite do they. No. No. Do they. No. No. Do they. Yes i have. Yes i have tried that because im like you. I dont either. Does it dont eat meat either. Does it work . Yes, it does. Its really nice. Mean, because football nice. I mean, because football at time at football is at half time at football is lovely. If you dont want a cup of or a coffee or a cold of tea or a coffee or a cold beeh of tea or a coffee or a cold beer, you have you take your own marmite, water it. Marmite, pour hot water on it. Theyre very tasty. Theyre actually very tasty. It like drinking like is it like drinking like stock yeah, thats the stock cube . Yeah, thats the thing. Yeah. Thing. Yeah. Also bovril also makes its also bovril also makes great. Great gravy. Oh, well, yeah, i can imagine. It was bovril. Gravy is also delicious. So, you know, if they want to. If they want to send me some after this. Oh, they give over. Oh, they give over. Over. Basically over. Basically over. All getting a bit fancy were all getting a bit fancy. That what this is . Is that what this is . Were all into couscous. Were all into couscous. Yes. Yes. And quinoa . Yeah and quinoa . Yeah quinoa. Quinoa out. Quinoa. Quinoa out. When you were down to earth, like, what am you like . Your bovnl like, what am you like . Your bovril mate . Well, yeah. I mean, evidently, were not eating corned beef anymore. Or condensed milk. David and i were just reminiscing about condensed milk when were condensed milk when we were kids. You sandwiches, didnt you . Yeah. Yeah. My mum to you . Yeah. Yeah. My mum used to have white bread, but you have it on white bread, but you used get of it and just used to get a tin of it and just spoon out. Oh it was spoon it out. Yes. Oh it was delicious. I couldnt do it now though. So i feel bad because these just were not staples of her, of my childhood. Dont ever had spam. No, never had spam. Corned beef, never had spam. Once made a corned beef i once was made a corned beef bolognaise. Bolognaise. Sandwich. It was. Oh, a sandwich. It was. Oh, a sandwich. It was. It was quite sweet isnt it. It was quite sweet isnt it. Ive never eaten it. I dont ive never eaten it. I dont eat meat. Quite sweet. I dont think youve missed a lot actually. The spam and corned beef, they were things that came in really war. You know, really during the war. You know, war time when there were shortages. Yes but they sort of carried on after that. Near steiner and liebfraumilch. I mean, you wouldnt touch that with a bargepole, now, would you . No. No. Yuck. Yuck. Everything changes. Everything changes. But the. Oh, yeah. But the. Oh, yeah. Dont go anywhere, you two, were come back you dont go anywhere, you two, wejust come back you dont go anywhere, you two, wejust a come back you dont go anywhere, you two, wejust a minute. Me back you dont go anywhere, you two, wejust a minute. Ine back you dont go anywhere, you two, wejust a minute. In the k you in just a minute. In the meantime, just popped up for us. And the liberal democrat and is the liberal democrat chief whip, wendy chamberlain, who joins us now. Good to see you this morning. Thank you very much, indeed. Its going to be a big weekend, of course, for the lib dems. Its firing the starting gun. Were told, on starting gun. So were told, on the general election. And what impact do you think the lib dems are going to have come the next general election . It seems general election . It seems unlikely you would win a majority, but you think you could be the kingmakers . Could be the kingmakers . Well well, first of all, i want to say that ive got my pot noodle supply ready to get me. Oh, well done. Well done. Well done. But, you know, we are looking forward to the next four days. You also reference that the death of the queen last year and we our autumn we didnt have our Autumn Conference as a result of this. So only is this likely to be so not only is this likely to be our last Autumn Conference before the next general election, its my election, for myself, its my first Autumn Conference as an mp. Terms of our mp. But in terms of our prospects , you just have to look prospects, you just have to look at four by election wins at the four by election wins weve since the last weve had since the last election. Increase in number election. The increase in number of weve had and of councillors weve had and were about where were realistic about where were realistic about where were targeting where we were targeting and where we think we can win. And where do you think you can win then . Can win then . Well, i think it would surprise you to know that were focussed on the blue wall. Those areas, the 80 seats that we were second into the conservatives at the election where, the last general election where, you know, its demonstrated by our by election victories that people are pretty sick and tired of the conservative gives dont think theyre delivering for them in their local communities and are open to listening to the lib dems. And as you can hear, im a scottish mp. We see a real change in the fortunes of the snp in scotland. So were focussed on where we can potentially make gains in scotland well. Scotland as well. Its a different approach. I mean of all the times running up to elections, ive to general elections, ive interviewed dems whove said interviewed lib dems whove said over over long, over the years, over a long, long saying, oh yeah, no, long time saying, oh yeah, no, we could very well form a majority government. It sounds like youre a youre like youre taking a youre taking , frankly, more taking, frankly, a more realistic approach and actually treating voters with a bit more respect and saying, yeah, rather than trying to pull the wool over their eyes. Well, i think what weve got is a reputation of working locally. And i think what were doing in terms of our strategy is focusing on that , showing is focusing on that, showing what we can deliver locally and then translating that into success from an mp perspective. Because when we talk about power, think important to power, i think its important to remember westminster is not remember that westminster is not where it just where its at. You know, gone from we won 12 know, weve gone from we won 12 councils at the local elections in may and we are now in power there and delivering benefits to local communities as a result. Wendy i think at the moment, and theres been polling that reflects this , a lot of us feel reflects this, a lot of us feel totally politically homeless or labours not speaking to them , labours not speaking to them, the conservatives arent speaking to them. Speaking to them. What actually differentiates the lib dems from the labour party really , because we look at party really, because we look at policy as and for example, youre calling for more money to be spent on on energy. I believe , and more money to go towards education on. Isnt that what most , you know, education on. Isnt that what most, you know, most politicians want . Thats what labour wants. Want . Thats what labour wants. Thats what the tories want. Whats different . Yeah so i think it is about not we want to spend the right money on services and we want to deliver for, for local communities. But we want to potentially do Different Things and that is what differentiates us as a party. And im pretty confident theres of dividing theres a number of dividing lines between ourselves and labour there certainly is labour and there certainly is between conservatives. But between the conservatives. But you know, i absolutely get your point feeling point about people feeling politically , politically disadvantaged, enfranchised, look, im not a career politician. I joined the lib dems in 2015 and then was elected in 2019. And when i speak to people, they do appreciate the fact that ive had a real life background. I was a Police Officer for 12 years and i understand the challenges and issues that theyre facing. And i think dunng theyre facing. And i think during cost of living crisis, i think people really appreciate that. Think thats what we that. And i think thats what we have as politicians. We have to do as politicians. We are responsible for rebuilding that because nobody else that trust because nobody else is going to do it. Wendy chamberlain, really good morning. Good to see you this morning. Thank much indeed. Thank you very much indeed. Thanks neesom and david thanks to dawn neesom and David Hamilton well. With them thanks to dawn neesom and david h little n well. Tomorrow going turn tomorrow its going to turn windier particularly the windier and particularly in the west, lot wetter. Its west, quite a lot wetter. Its not completely dry this morning. 1 2 showers just grazing 1 or 2 showers just grazing eastern and across the Eastern England and across the Northern Isles its still Northern Isles where its still quite blustery , too. The quite blustery, too. But the winds ease a little winds will ease down a little through the day and the showers in the should clear. For through the day and the showers in tvast should clear. For through the day and the showers in tvast majority,i clear. For through the day and the showers in tvast majority, it lear. For through the day and the showers in tvast majority, it isah for through the day and the showers in tvast majority, it is fine,r the vast majority, it is fine, dry, bright with some sunshine, albeit that sunshine turning hazy wales and northern hazy for wales and Northern Ireland with some rain coming into Northern Ireland later on. Temperatures recovering after that by this that chilly start by this afternoon into the teens, maybe the high teens in the south. The wet weather, though, will push into Northern Ireland and then into Northern Ireland and then into parts of scotland during this evening and then into wales as well, likely to linger in as well, and likely to linger in parts of the through the parts of the west through the night. Indeed for much of night. And indeed for much of sunday. The rain doesnt really get into the midlands or southern parts of england, generally staying dry here and it wont as tonight as it wont be as cold tonight as the night gone the night just gone because theres more cloud and the winds will up. Theres lots more still to come for you here on breakfast on gb news. Lots more on hs2. Its got you going this morning because, of course, the government is refusing to promise that its going to get anywhere beyond birmingham. Has it been mutilated . Has it been mutilated . Well, thats what the Boris Johnson is saying, isnt it . And David Cameron, strong stuff, actually. Keith in redditch says actually. Keith in redditch says the government should scrap hs2 altogether. Its muted , stated altogether. Its muted, stated the midlands. The roads are falling apart. It we could have is preparing to scrap the second leg of the High Speed Railway from birmingham. Both Boris Johnson and David Cameron have warned a mutilated line would be insanity. Catherine forster is insanity. Catherine forster is following the story. Following the story. Yes, its looking like hs2 may never get to the north of england and many people are asking what happened to levelling up. A Ukrainian Missile attack has hit the headquarter of russias black sea fleet , russias black sea fleet, leaving the Main Building in flames. And a serviceman missing i the International Week of happiness at work starts on monday. So do you love your job . Monday. So do you love yourjob . If not, why not . And alex has your weather. And alex has your weather. And alex has your weather. A fine day today for most places. Its a bit chilly out there right now, but well see some sunny spells and most will be dry tomorrow. A different story. The winds are going to pick up particular in the west. Some heavy rain. There is a met Office Yellow warning in place. Join later for all the details. And its a big weekend in the Rugby World Cup with england in action. 445 today against chile. Ireland facing south africa in a battle of the worlds top two. And can Manchester United get their season back on track when they in they visit burnley tonight in they visit burnley tonight in the league . The premier league . Aiden. Thank you. Im stephen dixon. Im emily carver and this is breakfast on. Breakfast on. Gb news levelling up. Weve been talking about it since 20 1920. Yes 2019. Yeah. But that was the sort of big election. It was pushed out, wasnt it . And this was the big Infrastructure Project that was going to make it happen. Yeah. Boris johnson has now yeah. Boris johnson has now waded into the ongoing row about hs2 because the government hasnt said what its not going to do. Its just refusing to promise that it will continue with some of the line, which would mean basically help levelling up in the north west of england. I mean, its just not happening, is it . Its been pushed back and back and back and back. Its a controversial project anyway. And guarantee and now theres no guarantee that it will get to manchester and now theres no guarantee that it may get to manchester and now theres no guarantee that it may not to manchester and now theres no guarantee that it may not evenanchester and now theres no guarantee that it may not even get ester and now theres no guarantee that it may not even get anyr and it may not even get any further birmingham. Further than birmingham. If youre thinking yeah. And if youre thinking about the southern end, though, most people arent the most people arent at the minute, might not even minute, but that might not even get euston apparently. Minute, but that might not even get johnsonn apparently. Minute, but that might not even get johnson says arently. Minute, but that might not even get johnson says itsntly. Minute, but that might not even get johnson says its being Boris Johnson says its being mutilated. Lets talk to our mutilated. Lets talk to our Political CorrespondentCatherine Forster, who is here morning , catherine. Good morning, catherine. Good morning. I mean, its just morning. I mean, itsjust turning into a total waste of time, isnt it . Its quite incredible, isnt it . I mean, its obviously always been massively controversial right from the beginning. Was it ever needed . Was ever a good use of money . Was it ever a good use of money . But as costs have gone up and up and up, weve seen what was originally going to be a y from euston to birmingham. Birmingham to leeds or birmingham to manchester. First of all, they scrapped the birmingham to leeds bid a year or so ago. There was outrage at that. Now it sounds very much like they are going to drop the birmingham to manchester part now theyve got to make the decision before the autumn statement , but it seems autumn statement, but it seems like rishi sunak and jeremy hunt are pretty determined to get rid of that bit of the y as well. And even on the bit at the bottom , the birmingham to euston bottom, the birmingham to euston line, theyre currently thinking to stop it at Old Oak Common, which is in north west london, not Central London at all. You then have to get off and get the elizabeth line into Central London. Well, of course you could just get on a train in Central London and get to birmingham. Now so it really is. Theres already. But you know what . Im just looking here at the history of hs2. So it was back in 2010 that they did this review that was subject to pubuc review that was subject to public consultation. This was public consultation. This was based on a y shaped route that would have leeds of manchester connected. This has been being connected. This has been being talked about for years and years and years. It does feel sometimes that we cant build anything in this country. It does when you consider that china can build things very, very fast indeed. And this very, very fast indeed. And this has gone on, the costs have gone up, but the completion date has gone back and back and back and all this money being ploughed in. Now, David Cameron, of course , this was central to his course, this was central to his term in office and he very rarely gets involved in politics. But he said to be very concerned. He thinks its central to levelling up as does the previous chancellor, George Osborne, who, of course represent cemented a northern seat. So theres lots of concern. Lives absolutely up in arms ,. Lives absolutely up in arms, including Boris Johnson, who as always has a way with words saying its been mutilated, which frankly, it has. If youre going to chop off two of the arms and a bit at the bottom, theres not a lot left. So he said it makes no sense at all to deliver a muted, hated hs2 and its treasury driven nonsense. Okay. So at what point did it a lot of people dont want it in the first place. You either go ahead and do it, dont you . Or you scrap it. Why . Why keep a bit in the middle if its not going to achieve a great deal . I think because so much money has already been spent and okay, theres quite a lot of money being spent for planning for the bits of manchester and the bit for and the bit to euston for leeds and the bit to euston too. Think its face saving too. I think its face saving really going on now isnt it . Building a bit, but really lots of people will question what the benefit of that is. So always been very controversial and i suspect the levelling up agenda that we heard so much of under bofis that we heard so much of under Boris Johnson , the promises made Boris Johnson, the promises made to 16 Million People who live in the north, a lot of them feel very disaffected because yet again, this was fundamentally a thing about getting to and from london quicker. What about getting across the north . Around the north . What about getting from liverpool to manchester to leeds to hull . What about high speed rail along there . Now the government are saying, well , we government are saying, well, we may use some of the money that were going to not spend by improving northern transport, but the problem is people in the north have been hearing this sort of stuff for years and years and years. While nothing much happens. Meanwhile london gets new elizabeth line. Gets a shiny new elizabeth line. Wonderful also massively overbudget, a bit of a slap in the face, isnt it, to, you know , people who, you know, dont live in london and actually might like to be able to get around the north a little better . Yeah. Link to the midlands yeah. Link to the midlands a little better. Well davids been in touch. Hi. David said not only is the hs2 a white elephant, but its london centric. It should have with the have started with the Cross Pennine which has Cross Pennine route, which has been then going to been cancelled and then going to manchester. The whole thing manchester. Now the whole thing should. I think a should be scrapped. I think a lot people going to agree lot of people are going to agree its save to scrap its still save money to scrap its still save money to scrap it we spent so much it just because we spent so much money on it, you know, up till now, still save money if you scrapped it. Yeah catherine, thanks indeed. What thanks very much indeed. What about one . This got you, about this one . This got you, didnt it . Paul in sheffield, he said, i heard you mentioning levelling paul in sheffield, he said, i heias you mentioning levelling paul in sheffield, he said, i heias someone ioning levelling paul in sheffield, he said, i heias someone fromg levelling paul in sheffield, he said, i heias someone from sheffield. I up as someone from sheffield. Im completely against the idea of levelling up. Im on a decent wage for a northerner and can afford live comfortably afford to live comfortably and buy why on would buy my home. Why on earth would i level up to the cost i wish to level up to the cost of living seen in london my wage wouldnt buy me an oyster card, let a home. There so yeah. Let alone a home. There so yeah. There paul doesnt want there you go. Paul doesnt want to level up. I suppose the argument no, i suppose the argument would be that levelling up would, you would increase would, you know, would increase wages the of it. Wages and all the rest of it. You might not be sort of any better with in terms of how better off with in terms of how much spending power youve got. But should, know, but everything should, you know, you end up you wouldnt you wouldnt end up with expensive home but with a more expensive home but on same wage level, that on the same wage level, that would be the argument. The cost of but i think the cost of living in london up your living in london eats up your your increased wage anyway. Living in london eats up your your in yeah,d wage anyway. Living in london eats up your your in yeah, itrvage anyway. Living in london eats up your your in yeah, it does. Inyway. Oh, yeah, it does. Oh, yeah, it does. Yeah. So probably better to stay where you are, paul. Well, sheffield, sheffield. Well, sheffield, sheffield. Place. Nice place. Nice place. It nice if your wage gets it is nice if your wage gets you, you know, roof over your head and some nice quality of life, then dont come down to london. Not worth it really isnt, though. Now , President Biden has now, President Biden has reportedly promised vladimir Vladimir Zelenskyy long range tactical missiles. Yes, us media did report this yesterday. Biden made the pledge dunng yesterday. Biden made the pledge during a bilateral summit at the white house on thursday. That was followed by the announcement of a new 325 million package of american weapons and aid. Now, the us had been reluctant to supply the weapons. The reason being, could it possibly create an escalation action from russia . Action from russia . So joining us this morning is rear admiral chris parry , former rear admiral chris parry, former nato commander. Thank you very much indeed forjoining us. So on these weapons, it seems as though President Biden has changed his mind on supply ing these. Do you think thats a good thing . I think anything that will allow the ukrainians to defeat the russian invasion of their country is a good thing. And were reaching a point now in the campaign where obviously the ukrainians are making steady advances against the russians to the east of we know crimea is thriving through to the black sea near melitopol , mariupol. And right now it needs an additional boost to enable the ukrainians to destroy the Russian Support and Logistic Forces that are supporting the frontline. Frontline. I mean, the concern on has has been throughout all of this, but particularly with supplying things like longer range missiles and planes and all the rest of it, has been the idea that in effect, nato would be taking a much more active role in in a war against russia, prompting that bigger response from moscow. I mean, prompting that bigger response from moscow. I mean, is that prompting that bigger response from moscow. I mean, is that not from moscow. I mean, is that not escalate by this move saving every time we supply ukraine with Better Technology or weapon system, the russians huff and puff and say its escalation and its making things worse. The biggest escalation will when russia invaded last year in february and i think russia has to accept that the free world wants to support a country that wishes to remain free and not subject to russian domination. Chris, its hard sometimes to make sense of all the different reports coming out of ukraine to see exactly what is happening on the ground. People are saying that ukraine is taking back land, that they are being successful in certain areas. Successful in certain areas. What does the picture look like . I think what we have to start with, emily, is the fact that the russians have had Something Like eight months to dig themselves in. Youve got three lines of fortifications. Youve got mines fortifications. Youve got mines fields that are 16 times more dense than we would normally use for a nato defensive line. For a nato defensive line. Theyve got artillery and aviation zeroed in to where you are attacking. And what the are attacking. And what the ukrainians are doing is probing along a broad front where they can actually penetrate these russian lines. Now, the atacms are really going to help with this. As i said, so they can hit support structures. But it was support structures. But it was never going to be easy. What i think is going to happen is the ukrainians can break through to the black sea , to the east of the black sea, to the east of crimea, and increase their attacks on crimea before winter sets in. Itll all go very stable. I think the best part of stable. I think the best part of four months until about february, march next year. And itll all be starting all over again. That can only benefit russia because obviously russia has a lot of gas, a lot of manpower mobilised. So i would say right now were heading for stalemate over winter. Stalemate over winter. Okay. Rear admiral chris parry, good to see you, as always. Appreciate it. Thank you. Yes. So you. Yes. So king charles waved off of war, didnt he, to france or what would we say . I was always taught of war. I was always taught of war. Well, considering i have a degree in french, i think i know. Do you have you got a degree in french . Uh, yes, i do, actually. And german. Dont test me. Its been a while now, but. Yeah. French. Whats decca . Dont know. Oh, come on. Its a one know. Oh, come on. Its a one phrase i learned in my german classes. Theres somebody around the corner i know. The corner. Um, decca around the corner. Um, decca 7 around the corner. Um, decca . There a song about. . Yes. There was a song about. Anyway doesnt matter where anyway it doesnt matter where decca comes around. Its about a hat. It has decca comes around. Its about a hat. It has three decca comes around. Its about a hat. It has Three Corners, our hat. It has Three Corners, our Three Corners like a trick. A lot like a what do you call a three cornered hat . I dont know. I dont know. I dont know. But try something or other. But try something or other. But try something or other. But yes, he waved. But yes, he waved. Au revoir to france. Yes. Au revoir to france. Yes. Au revoir to france. Yes. There you go. He had oh, there you go. He had a successful three day state visit. Thats what everyones saying. Yes, indeed. Their majesties boarded after getting boarded a plane after getting what frankly an ecstatic what was frankly an ecstatic reception bordeaux yesterday, reception in bordeaux yesterday, where into a glass where they tucked into a glass of wine and a great slice of fromage as our royal correspondent Cameron Walker looks back on the kings visit to france. To france. Say mbappe ssp lauded bordeaux in the centre. Bordeaux in the centre. He history shared and a future to build the king and queen officially welcomed to france by president macron and his wife during a rare ceremony at pariss arc de triomphe. At pariss arc de triomphe. No french crowds delighted that a king is back on french soil. Their last monarch forced out of this place in the 1700s before meeting his fate at the guillotine. But king charles and Queen Camilla had a much more friendly welcome at the palace of versailles , a magnificent of versailles, a magnificent state banquet hosted in their honouh state banquet hosted in their honour. And, of course , honour. And, of course, president pompidou hosted my mother here at the palace of versailles on her second state visit in 1972. I was remind recently that when she returned the courtesy with dinner for the president and madame pompidou at the hotel de chirac , they ran into a de chirac, they ran into a little more difficulty. Our little more difficulty. Our embassy tried to bring in several cases of english wine over from hampshire for the banquet , over from hampshire for the banquet, only to be over from hampshire for the banquet , only to be prevented by banquet, only to be prevented by a customs official at orly. A customs official at orly. Work hard, play hard for the queen and madame macron. After a comfortable win from the first lady, the pair launched a new uk france literary prize , uk france literary prize, celebrating the importance of breeding and the ties between britain and france. Britain and france. President madame le president i meanwhile, the king became the first member of the British Royal family to address french senators from their chamber here. This is my 35th official visit to france. Each and every visit to france. Each and every time i have been struck by the warmth of the welcome i have always received and by the immense good that can be accomplished at when france and the United KingdomWork Together , diplomatic ties strengthened. , diplomatic ties strengthened. It took a full minute and a half for the standing ovation to conclude. Inside the chamber conclude. Inside the chamber with senator eric bouquet, chair of the france uk friendship group. So of course its great opportunity because britain and france must go on having regular and strong relationship. We are neighbours. We are still you not neighbours. We are still you not in the in the European Union anymore , but you are still part anymore, but you are still part of europe. Okay dover is still the same distance from calais. The same distance from calais. So nothing has changed. The king and queen visited a flower market named after the late Queen Elizabeth ii, and then a short walk to Notre Dame Cathedral to meet firefighters who tackled devastating who tackled the Devastating Blaze in 2019. And those working to restore the famous landmark after french media leaked eco friendly train travel plans. Their majesties flew to bordeaux for security reasons. 39,000 for security reasons. 39,000 british expats live in bordeaux, the highest number in france. The highest number in france. And the king and queen visited a british run organic vineyard in the heart of wine Country Defence was also on the agenda, showing nato strength as the war in ukraine rages on. Wherever the king has been this week, hes genuinely received a really warm welcome. Six months ago, a warm welcome. Six months ago, a tour like this would have seemed impossible. Buildings literally burning sparks by the french pension riots. But the foreign pension riots. But the Foreign Office sensed majesties to office sensed their majesties to france strengthen relations. France to strengthen relations. Whether now translates into whether that now translates into better trading partnerships in the post brexit world remains to be seen. Cameron walker gb news in france. In france. Well, lets talk to ingrid seward, editor in chief of majesty magazine. Of course, really lovely to see you as always. This has been fantastic, hasnt it . Hasnt it . I think its been a massive success. Probably better than they ever hoped for , because i they ever hoped for, because i think because macron and madame macron seem to be so delighted and to be hosting the king and queen, i think it just gave a really good atmosphere. I know that there was a massive security and the crowds were kept back. But i think the bordeaux trip was far more relaxed and the whole thing and charles, addressing the senate in french a lot of the time it just seemed very, very friendly. And it went extremely smoothly. Yes , because we, our yes, because we, our politicians , arent always the politicians, arent always the most diplomatic when it comes to the french. I mean, it was liz truss, didnt she . She was asked whether macron was a friend or foe, and she said the jurys out , out. And then she backtracked and said, no, no. There and said, no, no, no. There there. Our friends, the french are our friends. So its quite useful for us to have the king go to france and, you know, not butter them up, but to strengthen those relations. Strengthen those relations. Absolutely. Because, i mean, absolutely. Because, i mean, the whole point of the king as head of state is that he is above politics. Um, and hes remained above politics. So its not theres no angles here. Of course, there is always the queens own personal angle, which we know so well about the climate and the environment. Climate and the environment. That was the sort of spearhead of the whole trip. I think its of the whole trip. I think its it works incredibly well. And the french have been hugely enthusiastic , especially their enthusiastic, especially their media is enthusiastic about this visit. Yeah do we think were to going see more from the king and queen now off the back of this . I mean, it was almost a bit of a test, wasnt it . It has gone so well. Theyve been received so well. Theyve been received so well. Do we think we could see more visits in the offing . Perhaps more than they were expected to . I think, you know, these things take ages to plan, but i think these short, sharp visits are what were going to see. And charles is calmer. Offensive is amazing. I mean, hes she speaks fluent german. And so far , fluent german. And so far, wonderful way of presenting himself when hes giving speeches and people really like him. And also the fact that the world cup is being played in france. I think that , you know, france. I think that, you know, got the interest going as well. Yeah. Okay ingrid, were going to leave it there because the sound is a little bit dodgy, but really good to see you this morning. Thanks very much. I do just think its been a really nice actually. And i like nice trip, actually. And i like to say its nice to see us represented in another country so well. So well. It is nice. It is nice. It is nice. Oh, theres a boat there. Oh, theres a boat there. Oh, theres a boat there. I just find it interesting how we, you know. Oh, it was so fantastic. So, i mean, neither fantastic. So, i mean, neither of us were there , but it does of us were there, but it does look like it was a success. Yes. Yeah, but i would like to seek a little bit of controversy and should king charles be be, you know, talking lots about the old Climate Change and the environment, realism is that politics . No, its just his passion project. And i dont think you project. And i dont think you can criticise him that the monarchy has to change. I mean, people are, though. I mean, people are, though. But hes not getting in. But hes not getting in. Again, i point to the front of the daily star. Oh, here we go. Pointing out the hypocrisy of king using a plane, of the king using a plane, talking about existential talking about the existential threat of Global Warming and then getting on a private jet would you go on a private jet if its a existential threat . We meant to ask , whats he we meant to ask, whats he meant to do . He cant. Hes not going get on the next easyjet going to get on the next easyjet flight, to luton . Flight, is he . To luton . Could be like greta it could be like Greta Thunberg and, know, make her thunberg and, you know, make her make himself a boat. Well, yes, he could be with that. I dont think wed have the same respect him as our same respect for him as our king. No, no. The utmost respect for i have the utmost respect for our monarch, of course. But i do think theres always bit of think theres always a bit of hypocrisy, there . Hypocrisy, isnt there . Yes and no. I mean, i dont know necessarily agree with everything he has to say on climate but there you Climate Change, but there you go. Hes allowed to have his views. He talks to his plants. And that makes it that makes him a good man. Yeah. I talked to mine. I wonder what they say to each other at these types of things. You know what he says to macron to know it all looks macron and to know it all looks very jolly, though maybe he says, you know, sort out the channel oh, do you think . Oh, do you think . Oh, do you think . I doubt it. I very much doubt it. But it might be quite useful if he was quite useful for rishi sunak. It would be. It would be. Anyway, keep your thoughts coming through, especially if you like emily. Like bit you like emily. You like a bit of just like to of controversy. I just like to keep it all smooth. Waters with the royals, frankly. Fair enough. The royals, frankly. Nowanough. The royals, frankly. Now letsjh. The royals, frankly. Now lets have look at some now lets have a look at some of the other stories heading into this morning. Into the newsroom this morning. Mps on the mps have called on the Government Support under government to support under pressure ahead of pressure house holds ahead of what theyre calling an inevitable Energy Crisis. Inevitable new Energy Crisis. This apparently this winter. And apparently theyre saying that people who didnt feel the benefit of last years £400 per household help should get that money. Now. Quite what they mean by feel the benefit . I dont know. Energy prices, as you probably be aware , have dropped significantly on the wholesale market. But in reality 30 many of us are paying exactly the same. Could pay even more this winter. Why is that . Why is that . Why is that . I dont know. I dont know. But in good news, its been a good year for the british wine harvest. Thats according to the royal horticultural society. Yes, the climate yes, because the climate is changing it means that changing thing. It means that its growing season its extended the growing season and caused boom for the and thats caused a boom for the uks industry. So had uks wine industry. So we had a wet and cool midsummer. Then it was sandwiched between hot, sunny june of sunny periods in june of september thats given us september and thats given us the of rain sunshine. Apparently, you are apparently, if you are getting away somewhere in the Distant Shores for a bit of winter sun, you might get more bang for your buck. According to a survey by the post office. And a survey by the post office. And thats all to do with sterlings value in far east countries. Apparently its holding up very well. So you get plenty for your well. So you get plenty for your money. Im. Off to now. Dave in money. Im. Off to now. Dave in london says, the Reason Energy bills arent getting cheaper is the standing charge going up all the standing charge going up all the time and the standing charge doesnt fluctuate the fuel doesnt fluctuate like the fuel pnces. Doesnt fluctuate like the fuel prices. Ofgem needs to address prices. Ofgem needs to address the profiteering via the standing charge. Certainly the standing charge. Certainly the standing charge. Certainly the standing charge. Certainly the standing charge is does play a part of it, but i think its all to do its all to do with the fact that we dont it was the artificial price cap then. The artificial price cap then. The £75 a month or £60 a month. We were getting plus the £400 and all those the reality is even though fuel is cheaper, were still getting a lot less money to pay for it or none at all. And regardless of where it comes from, we have to pay the most expensive price, right . So whether gas or whether its whether its gas or whether its renewables or whether its whatever we seem to get ripped off. But let us know if you think that the government should be spending more and more on well, what are essentially handouts . They are handouts. Its what they are handouts. Its what ihave they are handouts. Its what i have a great deal of sympathy for people who are really struggling with it and perhaps perhaps in means tested way. Perhaps in a means tested way. It could be looked at, but certainly for you cant keep handing out money like they have done. Its cost thousands of pounds household. Pounds per household. Interesting, its quite interesting, though, the though, because since the pandemic, expecting pandemic, people are expecting more from the government and the polling reflects that. Yes people just think the government should be doing a lot. Thats big. That is big state, nanny state, isnt it . Big state. Britain, in regards to smoking , were talking about the smoking, were talking about the pms plan to sort of get a whole generation off smoking. Graham a few ideas, graham says, put the price of a packet of 20 up to £20. Thatll stop a lot of people. A lot of people are still pay it though, and mike says whats next . Alcohol sugar on the same theme. Mark says if people want to smoke, let them. Why not ban drinking . Its just as harmful. You know what . Kate makes a very sensible economic point, actually. Just a quick actually. She says just a quick note about the suggested smoking ban. Perhaps the government should think the amount of should think about the amount of tax they will and tax revenue they will lose. And this i think this is this is actually i think this is the counter to what you were saying earlier about how this would be good for the nhs, apparently, because this is a bit morbid, but bit morbid, sorry, but apparently smokers apparently because smokers lifespan they lifespan is shortened, they actually costing the nhs actually end up costing the nhs less. Oh, believe it or not. Right. Right. So if you want to get your moneys worth out of all the National Insurers that youve paid in, dont smoke because youll youll get youll live longer, youll get more it back. So yeah, happy more of it back. So yeah, happy saturday. Ill tell saturday. Yeah. But ill tell you terms of the you what, in terms of the revenue , thats why dont revenue, thats why they dont just just going to just say, well, just going to ban the cigarettes. Thats why they phase it out so they want to phase it out so they want to phase it out so they cope with loss of they can cope with the loss of money it . Money isnt it . Like with electric its like with electric vehicles. They going vehicles. How are they going to make up for all the fuel duty . Theyll find other ways to tax us. Oh, thats a very good point. I thought of that. Oh, i hadnt thought of that. Oh, jov i hadnt thought of that. Oh, joy. To about. Joy. Joy joy to think about. Here go. Here we go. Here we go. Never but it pours. Never rains, but it pours. Oh, talking of which, lets see what the weathers going to do for you today. That warm feeling inside from boxt boilers proud sponsors of weather on gb news good morning, im alex deakin. This is your latest weather update from the met office for gb news. Good looking day out there today. Its a bit chilly out there first thing this morning. Tomorrow its going to turn particularly turn windier and particularly in the west, quite a lot wetter. Its not completely dry this morning. Showers just morning. 1 or 2 showers just grazing and grazing Eastern England and across the Northern Isles where its blustery , too. Its still quite blustery, too. But winds will ease down a but the winds will ease down a little through the day and the showers east should showers in the east should clear. Majority, it clear. For the vast majority, it is fine, dry, bright with some sunshine, albeit that sunshine turning hazy and turning hazy for wales and Northern Ireland with some rain coming into Northern Ireland later on. Temperatures recovering after that chilly start this afternoon into the start by this afternoon into the teens, maybe the high teens in the south. The wet weather, though, will push into Northern Ireland and then into parts of scotland during this evening and then wales as well, and then into wales as well, and likely to linger parts of the likely to linger in parts of the west through the night. And indeed for much of sunday. Rain doesnt really get into the midlands southern parts of midlands or southern parts of england, staying dry england, generally staying dry here wont cold here and it wont be as cold tonight as the just gone tonight as the night just gone because more cloud and because theres more cloud and the winds will be picking up. So sunday further rain at sunday sees further rain at times. North west times. Parts of north west england and especially of england and especially parts of scotland looking soggy where we do met Office Yellow do have met Office Yellow warnings place, but also warnings in place, but also parts wales, northern parts of north wales, Northern Ireland see pretty heavy ireland could see pretty heavy and persistent rain for most of tomorrow afternoon. Patchy rain tomorrow afternoon. Patchy rain further and central further south and many central and eastern parts will again just dry and tomorrow just be dry and bright. Tomorrow it windier , but its it will be windier, but its also to be warmer with also going to be warmer with temperatures high teens temperatures in the high teens or 20 degrees. Or maybe 20 degrees. That warm feeling inside aside from boxt boilers as proud sponsors of weather on. Gb news, sponsors of weather on. Gb news, well, dont go anywhere because theres lots heading your way. In just a moment, including all the sport with aidan magee. Very good morning to you. It is 832. What should we kick off with the yeah, . Think what should we kick off with the yeah, . Think so. What should we kick off with the yeah, . Think so. Yeah. Yeah, i think so. Yeah. England action against england in action against chile. The done, steve. And the hard works done, steve. And they argentina two weeks they beat argentina two weeks ago. They followed that up with ago. They followed that up with a win against a back to back win against japan. Theyre japan. And theyre almost through pool 12 through the pool phase 12 changes. Bring changes. Theyre going to bring back smith, who wasnt back marcus smith, who wasnt really trusted under the previous eddie jones, but previous coach, eddie jones, but a chance for a great playmaker, a chance for him what he can do. I him to show what he can do. I mean, farrell restored as well as he was suspended as captain. He was suspended for the couple games the first couple of games because of dangerous tackle because of a dangerous tackle pnor because of a dangerous tackle prior tournament. So prior to the tournament. So again, him show again, chance for him to show what he do. George ford what he can do. George ford drops the bench. Was the drops to the bench. He was the guy all those points guy who kicked all those points two which really took two weeks ago, which really took the off england. And so the pressure off england. And so if they get through the pool stages, you ask me a of stages, you ask me a couple of hours ago, didnt you how do you think going to do . Think england are going to do . Well you know what . Theyre not in now. They in vintage form. Even now. They certainly the lead up certainly werent in the lead up to they get to the tournament. If they get into knockout phase, if into the knockout phase, if i was ireland, if i was south africa, the top two teams in the world, the host nation, world, if i was the host nation, france, the france, who i make the favourites, i think id favourites, i dont think id want face england in the want to face england in the knockout phase because are knockout phase because we are a big nation at rugby. Were the former winners. Weve been to two the last 15, 16 two finals in the last 15, 16 years, were a years, so were still a dangerous side, as would be the case australia, who case with australia, who also arent playing very well. So out of pool stages, you never of the pool stages, you never know going happen know whats going to happen later as well. After that later today as well. After that weve ireland playing weve got ireland playing against south africa. This is interesting against south africa. This is intere likely to face france in looks likely to face france in the quarterfinal. Be the quarterfinal. Who will be who going to who look like theyre going to be injured . You can face france any their france at any time in their dangerous without dupont. Different proposition and probably through. Probably an easier way through. Chances so frances chances are you know balance in the know well in the balance in the balance, say hes not balance, i would say hes not definitely a definitely out but hes a definitely out but hes a definite worry. Definite injury worry. Hes one of the best and hes one of the best players world. No players in the world. No question about it. Now, football, theres lots going on this weekend. The premier leagues back. Absolutely. Yeah, man united in against in action this evening against burnley. In absolute burnley. They are in absolute disarray minute. Disarray at the minute. It just looked of those games, looked like one of those games, you they back you know, when they got back into good team into the game, the good team just got better and got just got a bit better and got away them. Stephen ten years ago you couldnt anything of couldnt get anything out of manchester because Manchester United because despite them being a vast institution, ferguson institution, sir Alex Ferguson had everything on lockdown. Nobody. Can nobody used to speak. You can get anything out them and get anything out of them and its case anymore. Which get anything out of them and its to case anymore. Which get anything out of them and its to that anymore. Which get anything out of them and its to that anyculture vhich get anything out of them and its to that anyculture hash says to me that the culture has declined little bit. The declined a little bit. The standards have declined slightly, back slightly, but back to back defeats moment. Defeats at the moment. Interesting. So its interesting. So, i mean, this is ten mean, basically this is ten hags isnt it, that hags problem isnt it, that although theres issues although theres been issues with sort of with players and hes sort of you can say, well, its a player playing up if you like, if this is becoming endemic. Its a is becoming more endemic. Its a managerial problem. Is. But he will well, it is. But he will argue, say, look, i was brought in change culture when he in to change the culture when he came months came into the club 15 months ago. Sometimes like ago. But sometimes a club like united, to pick united, you just have to pick your one at a time. Hes your battles one at a time. Hes been authoritarian. Been very authoritarian. And yes, is whats yes, that is that is whats whats needed. Sometimes you whats needed. But sometimes you you only like in you can only be like that in certain of the club. You certain areas of the club. You have to pick your battles. He disposed cristiano disposed of Cristiano Ronaldo last everyone last year, which everyone said was very, very was going to be very, very difficult. Think playing difficult. And i think playing wise was the right decision. Wise it was the right decision. He earned quite of respect he earned quite a lot of respect for but this season, i for that. But this season, i mean, off mean, Marcus Rashford is off form theyve had form again. Theyve had significant well. Significant injuries as well. Burnley are not in good form at all. Theyve game so all. Theyve won not a game so far this season. So they far this season. So if they go there tonight a win, who there tonight and get a win, who knows . Could just get knows . That could just get them back track they back on track because they really need it. But ten hag did say always pressure say theres always pressure as man hes man united manager and hes absolutely right thankfully man united manager and hes absolu always ht thankfully man united manager and hes absolu always ht thank1aiden youre always on form aiden thank much see thank you very much indeed see you later. Weve got the headline makers heading a moment. Heading away in just a moment. Dont anywhere its 840. This is breakfast with steven and emily. Very good morning to you. Very good morning. Yes. Joining us now for the days headunesis joining us now for the days headlines is former daily star editor dawn neesom and radio and Television BroadcasterDavid Hamilton. Thank you forjoining hamilton. Thank you for joining us again. Thank you for asking us. Thank you for asking us. Should we go . Should we go rock certainly a rock band yet . No. Certainly a matter of are we going . I know. Well, because are well, because david, you are showbiz, bro broadcasting royalty. Should we kick off with royalty. Should we kick off with a royal story in the times . You mean proper royals . You mean proper royals . Proper royals . Yes proper royals . Yes the royal visit to france has been deemed a great success. It ended by visiting an organic vineyard where the royal couple toasted each other with wine from the year of their wedding. In 2005. Some people , of course, in 2005. Some people, of course, have complained that they flew from bordeaux to paris instead of taking the plane. Theres of taking the plane. Theres always going to be some complain , isnt there . But i think charles is absolutely charmed them with his french. I think camilla had a bit of a go as well. She threw the ping pong match against she threw it. She match against she threw it. She threw it. Yeah. She could have played much better than that. Oh, right. She threw it against france, his first lady and presumably she let her win. Yes, presumably she let her win. Yes, i think so. Yes. Thats outrageous. Yes. Thats outrageous. Yes. Thats outrageous. Yes. I mean, can you imagine . I cant its like cant imagine what its like being said being camilla and being said now, weve now, your majesty, weve arranged for you to play table tennis. What tennis. What a bit of a ding dong at the ping a bit of a ding dong at the ping pong, somebody called it. Oh, but presumably during the whole visit, nobody mentioned the boats. Well. Well, how could you, well. Well, how could you, though . How could you know what the times are reporting that no one mentioned the boats. Well, thats why its so successful. The visit, because, you know, they skirted around that. And obviously nobody mentioned the boats. No which is the most important thing between england and france. Yes. But england and france. Yes. But hes not a politician. No, no , hes not politician. But it must be nice just being able to have nice, polite conversations about. Yes, bordeaux and lovely wine and bit of ping pong. No controversy. Of ping pong. No controversy. Yeah, but i mean, isnt Prince Charles run one of his cars on recyc old wine or something or other . Did i read that somewhere . Probably not. Im probably making it up. He just. He just. It might be vegetable oil. He was recycling some sort of foodstuff or rather. So it might have got into greenish shoes, obviously. Would you put obviously. Why would you put wine in car more wine in a car thats more expensive than petrol . I expensive than petrol . Well, i wouldnt. He wouldnt. I mean, obviously he is certainly wouldnt. Thats true. Thats true. A bit of plonk must be cheaper petrol. Cheaper than petrol. Can have a look at dawn at can we have a look at dawn at the sun and shop . Lifting the sun and shop . Lifting shoplifters, showing off . Yeah. Well, basically, i mean, to be fair to this chap, his name is cullum. Hes 32 years old and hes a hes a former heroin addict. Right. So thatis former heroin addict. Right. So that is why hes talking about that is why hes talking about that obviously was shoplifting to fund his habit. He has claimed he pinched £3 million worth of item and says its actually too easy to steal from shops. And are we meant to be thankful to him for pointing this, pointing it out and the fact is that shops need to toughen up now. Well, the thing is, shops are toughening we had the report toughening up. We had the report at last week. At the beginning of last week. I think it is about shops are now actually losing so many millions. They are hiring security guards. I think security guards. I think waitrose are offering free coffee to Police Officers to come in and have some sort of uniform at present. But over the last couple of days, co op stores announced they have taken a £33 million hit in just six months as shoplifting surges. I mean, thats ridiculous. It is. And not only that, but staff are being constantly threatened , being constantly threatened, armed with with syringes and spat at and physically assaulted is and these are big shops as well. You can imagine if youre trying to run like a local corner shop. Yeah. The hits youre taking there, you cant afford to carry on doing this. And shops going out and smaller shops are going out of is almost of business, but it is almost now. And were of business, but it is almost now to. And were of business, but it is almost now to go. And were of business, but it is almost now to go the. And were of business, but it is almost now to go the same were of business, but it is almost now to go the same wayzre of business, but it is almost now to go the same way as going to go the same way as america, its san america, i think its San Francisco where now unless someone is literally nicking more than. I think its like more than. I think its like 500 worth of stuff, they wont even investigate it. Yeah, i think it might be even higher than that. I think it might be about 800, but im wondering whether guy he wondering whether this guy is he a saying this after a bit cheeky saying this after hes £3 million of goods hes nicked £3 million of goods being now its is a bit i mean, its very you know, if youre if youve been assaulted whilst working in your local store you are going very angry that are going to be very angry that he is saying that you need to toughen up security. Toughen up your security. Yourself. Yeah just help yourself. Yeah just help yourself. Isnt it . Time, isnt it . Time, isnt it . Well, problem. Well, thats the problem. Its almost looting now. Its almost like looting now. Many cases, i think in many cases, you know, these stores know, the people in these stores know, the people in these stores know these people are there know, the people in these stores knfrightenedzse people are there know, the people in these stores knfrightenedzse do ople are there know, the people in these stores knfrightenedzse do anythingthere know, the people in these stores knfrigitenedzse do anythingthere know, the people in these stores knfrigit. Ned3se do anythingthere know, the people in these stores knfrigit. And se do anythingthere know, the people in these stores knfrigit. And if do anythingthere know, the people in these stores knfrigit. And if do aringingthere know, the people in these stores knfrigit. And if do aring the here about it. And if you ring the police, itll take half an hour to get theyre not going to get there. Theyre not going to get there. Theyre not going to hang around, are they . Theyre so its you theyre gone. So its just, you know , yourself. Know, help yourself. Back the day, not well, back in the day, not that happened to me. That it has ever happened to me. I say, but the i have to say, but the impression always was if you were caught nicking anything, you were sort of grabbed , put you were sort of grabbed, put locked in the back room until the police arrived. Well, that doesnt happen now. The police arrived. Well, that doesomebodyn now. The police arrived. Well, that doesomebody tried . The police arrived. Well, that doesomebody tried that the police arrived. Well, that doe somebody tried that other somebody tried that the other day and got it in the neck day and he got it in the neck for actually grabbing hold of somebody who was. Did you read that story he was taking something. Yeah. So, i mean , something. Yeah. So, i mean, were almost in a Lawless Society now. And i must tell you, i live in the country now, but i come up to london occasionally to come here and also to go to see my football at fulham. And i went to the match last weekend at craven cottage. And as i was going over putney bridge, i saw some cyclists on mobile phones and theyre cycling. Theyre holding the bike with one hand and theyre looking at a mobile phone with another hand. Yeah, there was nothing anybody can do about it, but its terribly dangerous. And imagine for people crossing the road, somebody is doing that. Road, somebody is doing that. Yeah, well, and the other thing we had a story about thing is we had a story about cyclists and wanting more respect which im respect on the road, which im all family lot all for it. My family do a lot of cycling my dad and my of cycling well, my dad and my brother do. So im all for it, you know, cyclists with you know, treat cyclists with respect. When come respect. But but when you come to things, to a big town and things, i mean, the number of times they just through the traffic just sail through the traffic lights and they dont stop for anything. Well, there kids getting well, there are kids getting these, know, lime these, you know, these lime bikes that can just hire and bikes that you can just hire and theyre not hiring them. Theyre for just passing them to move when they havent even paid for them. And they yeah, theyre them. And they yeah, theyre just going around their just going around with their phones try reporting phones out. But try reporting anti social behaviour. Youre not very far. Not going to get very far. Youre to get anywhere. So weve got almost a Lawless Society now and a lot of it is because cuts and the because of the cuts and the police and dont police force. And you dont see bobbies beat anymore, bobbies on the beat anymore, which were tremendous deterrent to. To crime. Now can i just say you now you can i just say you two have very, very lucky being here we it here today because we know it means love your work. Means that you love your work. Yes. How do you communicate with something that cant speak english . There is about their energy. Energy. So pets that are over the rainbow bridge. I will tap into their energy and i will fill their energy and i will fill their personality. You know, we can all say that our pets have got beautiful personalities, cant we . You know, we pick up on different quirks, different mannerisms theyve and mannerisms that theyve got. And ill be able to pick up on that energy ill able pick up energy. Ill be able to pick up on memories that you on different memories that you shared. So different visuals that have had. I might that you might have had. I might hear words or phrases hear certain words or phrases that maybe youve said to them that maybe youve said to them that you shared to them or that resemble Different Things , but resemble Different Things, but they wont have like a full blown natter with me. There was another in there was another one in manchester twisted manchester called the twisted wheel, was also wheel, and that was also northern soul. Frankly it is a long way to manchester, especially if youre waiting for the hs2 high speed rail link isnt get there. Isnt going to get there. Doesnt like not going to doesnt look like not going to leeds go to leeds as we know. Wont go to euston , but it will go somewhere euston, but it will go somewhere from london to birmingham. Well. Good morning to you. Its well. Good morning to you. Its 9 00 on saturday, the 23rd of september. Today will hs2 ever get to manchester . Well, downing street is apparently preparing to scrap the second leg of the High Speed Railway from birmingham. Both Boris Johnson and David Cameron have warned a mutilated line would be in sanity. Catherine forster is following this. Yes, its sounding like hs2 may go from just out of Central London to birmingham and that will be that. Lots of people will be that. Lots of people saying whatever happened to levelling up the north is a Ukrainian Missile attack has hit the headquarters of russias black sea fleet, leaving the Main Building in flames. And a serviceman missing. And a serviceman missing. This morning marks the opening of an action packed leeds event thats set tales and tongues tongues wagging. Its tongues tongues wagging. Its the dog fest and oriley has all the dog fest and oriley has all the action later for you this houh and alex has your weather. And alex has your weather. And alex has your weather. A fine day today for most places. Its a bit chilly out there right now, but well see some sunny spells and most will be dry tomorrow at different story. The winds are going to pick particularly in the pick up, particularly in the west. Some heavy rain. There is a Office Warning in a met Office Yellow warning in place. Later for all the details. Morning you. Im stephen dixon. And im emily carver , and and im emily carver, and this is breakfast on gb news. Well, levelling up with hs2, honestly. I mean, were talking honestly. I mean, were talking about it this morning. It is dominated all these hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of emails that were getting in. And youre furious , frankly. But also furious, frankly. But also youve got benefit of youve got the benefit of hindsight. Youve got the benefit of hindsight. Its got to be said. And trevor has been in touch. Hi trevor says not Everyone Wants to work live. Visit london a lot of northerners north of watford are quite happy to stay well away from anything. London centric. Yes. Where are you . Trevor milton keynes. Oh, yes. Excellent oh, who . Oh, yes. Excellent oh, who . What was this . Oh, yes, mike, youve written it. And he says, im surrounded by hs2, works in warwickshire. Its no surprise the project keeps pushed the project keeps getting pushed back literally see back because you literally see hundreds standing hundreds of workers standing about nothing, not moving about doing nothing, not moving. Its ridiculous. And kevin in manchester, they see this. I didnt think of this see this. I didnt think of this at the time. Kevin but you did. And you were right. He says the day the government announced they were starting hs2 from london, a new levelling up would be betrayed. And it looks like be betrayed. And it looks like its going to go to birmingham and thats it. Lets get the low down Catherine ForsterPolitical Correspondent is here. I mean, hs2 to this this great connection in between parts of the north and the north to the midlands and midlands to london, just like what . Its just going to be a strip from birmingham to somewhere out in Greater London how. Now. Well, the government have to make a final decision before the autumn statement, but it sounds very much like it will ultimately run from Old Oak Common, which is not even euston station. Thats north west london, next to wormwood scrubs i yeah. Yeah. So handy if the lags getting out not a Central Location by any means through to birmingham and that that will be that the original shape that we were promised that was from euston to birmingham, birmingham to leeds, the birmingham to leeds. Bit of the why was scrapped a couple of years ago. It sounds very much now like the birmingham to manchester outer part. The other part of the why will be scrapped so were left potentially with the rump of it from Old Oak Common to birmingham. But of course if youre going to go from london to birmingham by train, why would you just not get on in Central London and get off at birmingham . Because the old oak birmingham . Because the Old Oak Common, you then have to get the elizabeth line into Central London. The government are very worried about the costs. Of worried about the costs. Of course, this has been long, hugely controversial. Theres plenty of people who think that the whole project , it was never the whole project, it was never a good idea. And that was before the pandemic, before the government were in so much debt, before home, working. Et cetera. Et cetera. But we really are now et cetera. But we really are now in this incredible mess where what we will be left with is a bit of railway , okay . It will bit of railway, okay . It will increase capacity, but still vast expense , huge amounts of vast expense, huge amounts of money being spent. And still the money being spent. And still the north of england transport their complete , sorely neglected. Complete, sorely neglected. Youre so right, though, about the going to Old Oak Common instead of euston because why would you bother taking that line if you wanted to get into Central London . You just wouldnt. You just use the train that already exists. Yeah, its madness. Madness. Theres and theres plenty of conservative is absolutely up in arms now. David cameron, who never really intervenes, has made it known privately that he thinks this is a huge mistake. And michael gove has said as levelling up secretary. So still to be fighting for the connection to manchester George Osborne, who of course was all about Northern Powerhouse , was about Northern Powerhouse, was not happy either , and boris not happy either, and Boris Johnson with his way with words. So saying that this is treasury dnven so saying that this is treasury driven nonsense, he says it makes no sense at all to deliver a mutilated dead hs2. Makes no sense at all to deliver a mutilated dead hs2. But a mutilated dead hs2. But theres plenty of people also thinking its just thrown king money down the drain , the whole money down the drain, the whole thing. And although vast amounts of money have been spent by better to sort of cut their losses and put the money into northern transport, i mean, were for here years and years about fast rail between liverpool and leeds and potentially hull. Well, still not happening. No, but. And will it happen . Will it happen it happen . Will it happen because this is a thing. 16 Million People in the north think theyve heard it all before. All these promises and promises. Meanwhile londons got the shiny new elizabeth line. Thats all fabulous and what do people in the north have . Well, exactly. And you do wonder why, if the problem is if this if this does all get canned and then who who is going to come up with a plan to connect manchester, leeds, liverpool, hull and newcastle . I mean, peter in newcastle says when are they going to level up the north east . We are totally, totally neglect it up here. Yeah, theres been quite a few the north few messages about the north east because of course youve got manchester, youve got birmingham, leeds, sheffield, you potentially link all you could potentially link all those places well if you wanted to, but newcastle is out on its own up in the north east and other people messaging saying, well, try living in wales. What about cornwall . Begum hinckley Infrastructure Spending in london is huge compared to any other region in of the uk and productivity to the productivity in london and the south east is sort of world class and productivity in the rest of the country is not great. And surely part of that is because its just really hard to get around and things that you take for granted in london in terms of getting public transport, getting public transport, getting a bus, getting a train. Getting a bus, getting a train. Its very different in large parts of the country. Yeah, catherine, stay there. Lets just talk chair of lets just talk to the chair of the labour party, Anneliese Dodds, who us this dodds, who joins us this morning. Really good to see you. And elise , look what on the and elise, look what on the bafis and elise, look what on the basis that your campaign obviously to form the next government whenever that next general election is not that far off, what would you do with hs2 . 7 good . Good morning. 7 good morning. Well we want to see hs2 and Northern Powerhouse rail built in full. The governments own Economic Assessment actually indicated with independent experts contributing to it, that you needed to have the full line being built to get the biggest economic impact. And i think just as youve been saying, this was a major plank of the government claims around levelling up. There has been speculation in in fact, over the last 30 years, including just the last few days around these projects. Thats not the way to be delivering that kind of infrastructure. And labour would infrastructure. And labour would have a very different approach. We would make sure not only that we sped up Infrastructure Projects, but that we then didnt have this kind of speculation and instability because its causing huge , huge because its causing huge, huge issues for our countrys reputation. Reputation. So anneliese the labour party , if in government would continue to plough billions of pounds into this project that is already over massively over budget and massively over time, do you think this is the priority that people in the nonh priority that people in the north actually want . North actually want . So we would be ensuring far better value for money . Weve set out our plans for an office, for value, for money, making sure that we really did have much better control over the pubuc much better control over the public finances than what the conservatives have delivered. Of course, we do not know what kind of fiscal situation. So a tax of fiscal situation. So a tax and spend situation we would inherit if we came into government. Weve seen the pubuc government. Weve seen the public finances deteriorating under the conservatives in many ways. And as said, weve seen ways. And as said, weve seen a lack of grip on these kinds of major projects. But that need for connectivity in the north continues. And i would say this isnt just about rail. Its also about whats happened in buses where labour would make sure we had far greater control over busesin had far greater control over buses in local communities. Truly critical for the north of england as well. Yeah, its just it is all backed down to the money though, isnt because you cant isnt it . Because you cant people would want you to do, say a lot of people at least would want you to say yes , we keep it want you to say yes, we keep it going. Were going to the going. Were going to have the manchester connection. Were going to have the leeds connection. Going have connection. Were going to have it running euston. If it running into euston. But if the government is saying, well, thatis the government is saying, well, that is just simply going to cost much money, we then how cost too much money, we then how can you make a commitment before youve even seen the books . Youve even seen the books . Well, i think the problem is that unfortunately , under the that unfortunately, under the conservatives, weve had on so many different areas of Economic Policy , instability and policy, instability and indecision , you know, this isnt indecision, you know, this isnt the only time when the conservatives seem to be changing their minds about something. Weve seen it just last week with them deciding to change that date for petrol and diesel vehicles being phased out for new sales. Why is that an issue . Its an issue because its going to impact on billions of pounds of investment that would have then got the cost of motoring down for ordinary people. So, you know , the people. So, you know, the conservatives keep chopping and changing around these issues and thats making all of it more expensive. Theres some costs in expensive. Theres some costs in that. The conservatives have essentially kissed goodbye to, and thats bad for the taxpayer i anneliese the labour to get into government have to win back a lot of people who voted conservative at the last election. You know that of course, keir starmer knows that. Have you got it right when it comes to net zero and Climate Policy . Because you know the delay on the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel is quite popular among the public. According to a recent polling, you know, 50 of people support that. You know, 50 of people support that. 80 of conservative voters that. 80 of conservative voters as these are quite popular policies. Are you sure the policies. Are you sure the labour party wants to roll back on that . On that . Well, actually, when you look at peoples support for the Automotive Industry in particular, you know, people are overwhelmingly clear that they want to keep those automotive jobs in our country. They want to be boosting our Automotive Industry. And i think the message has been pretty clear from ford, from make uk that represents manufacturers from lots and lots of different businesses is theyre really worried about the instability that the conservative government has created. Theyre worried about that impact on jobs and they are worried about the impact on cost because the governments own projections have indicated that in the medium term actually sticking to the existing plan would have got motoring costs down for people. You know, know what its like for motorists at the moment. You know, theyre really being hammered. The cost of petrol has gone insurance gone up, the cost of insurance has roads are has gone up, roads are crumbling, arent being crumbling, potholes arent being filled in. Now were potentially going be seeing because of going to be seeing because of the governments machinations as the governments machinations as the motoring in the the cost of motoring in the future being higher than it be. You know, thats really not the kind of decision that a government should taking. Government should be taking. Its it should its taking it should be protecting money in peoples protecting the money in peoples pockets protecting jobs in pockets and protecting jobs in our country. Has be said, though. The has to be said, though. The ban new sale of petrol ban on the new sale of petrol and diesel cars is going to come into force in 2035. In europe. And so keir starmer said a week ago today he didnt want any divergence from europe. Divergence from europe. Well, with respect , he didnt well, with respect, he didnt say that. What he said was in areas where our actually the uk has got high standards, where there are also high standards in there are also high standards in the eu and where its possible for us to strip away red tape for us to strip away red tape for british businesses, then we should be working together. And you know that makes sense. I mean, why does zealand have mean, why does new zealand have a agreement with the a veterinary agreement with the eu and the uk doesnt , you know, eu and the uk doesnt, you know, without that agreement actually many of our producers are being wrapped in red tape. Its making it harder for them to actually export and import. So, you know, weve got to sort this keir export and import. So, you know, wevright to sort this keir export and import. So, you know, wev right to sort this keir export and import. So, you know, wev right to sayt this keir export and import. So, you know, wev right to say that; keir export and import. So, you know, wev right to say that we keir export and import. So, you know, wev right to say that we needr export and import. So, you know, wev right to say that we need to was right to say that we need to sort it out, but it comes sort it out, but when it comes to our Automotive Industry, you know, i know whats been happening there. As many of our viewers this programme viewers on on this programme will , unfortunately, weve will know, unfortunately, weve been out in that global been losing out in that global race. Now, thats because as a country , unfortunately under the country, unfortunately under the conservatives weve not seen backing for new battery factories. Weve not seen backing for the Automotive Industry in the way that we should have seen it. Weve been losing out on those jobs. Labours got a plan to keep them in our country. The government has got no plan anneliese im not sure people will be convinced the labour party convinced that the labour party are on the side of motorists. I mean, youve had sadiq khan in london insisting upon expanding the ulez zone thats clobbering a lot of people. All clobbering a lot of people. All thats making the cost of driving more expensive. Youve got in wales, youve got this what some people see as quite an authoritarian move to make all residential roads all built up roads 20mph. People are saying they dont like these kind of policies, but its labour whos enacting them. Enacting them. Well, actually it was the conservative government which said that different local areas needed to impose charging schemes. And what they didnt do schemes. And what they didnt do in london was listen to what the mayor was saying, which was that he needed more support to deliver a bigger scrappage scheme. You know, he delivered the biggest scrappage scheme that could, but he that he possibly could, but he didnt have the support that was available, example, in available, for example, in birmingham and would say that thats the difference really with labour when it comes to Environmental Issues under the conservatives , you know, they conservatives, you know, they seem to always focus just on a stick. Theyre not providing then a carrot, theyre not providing support for people. Labouris providing support for people. Labour is approach is different, real focus is on getting bills down, delivering Energy Security for our country so we dont have to rely on foreign dictators and making sure that we win that race for the jobs of the future. Those are the important elements for us. They dont seem to be important. Unfortunately for the conservatives. Oh, hold on with respect, you cant say sadiq khan was the labour mayor of london. Sadiq khans ulez scheme, which is upsetting so many people, is the governments fault. Governments fault. Well, actually grant shapps wrote to the mayor and said that charging schemes were what his government were proposing was proposing, and i think that was completely , flatly clear at the completely, flatly clear at the time. Now, labour has said its time. Now, labour has said its important that we listen to people at the moment in the midst of a cost of living crisis. Yes, but as i said, the mayor was absolutely clear. He believed should been was absolutely clear. He belieysupport should been was absolutely clear. He belieysupport for|ould been was absolutely clear. He belieysupport for ajld been was absolutely clear. He belieysupport for a scrappagezen more support for a scrappage scheme to provide people who scheme to provide to people who need it. As big as he possibly could. But the conservative could. But the conservative government listening. And government wasnt listening. And i a big problem i think thats a big problem because we need make because actually we need to make sure support people during sure that support people during a of living crisis and at a cost of living crisis and at the same time we are protecting clean air and Everything Else and not anneliese. And not anneliese. There was no government mandate for sadiq khan to implement the expansion. Yes, there was the assertion that there was the assertion that there should be some clean zones and charging , but not the not and charging, but not the not the most recent expansion. That wasnt even on sadiq khans manifesto. That was a new policy. And its something that sadiq khan is and he says extremely proud of. So i think he owns that one. I think thats pretty clear. Pretty clear. Well, its in black and white. In a letter that grant shapps sent to him, its very , shapps sent to him, its very, very clear. And as i said, labours approach to these issues is different because we believe that actually at the same time as seeking to protect the environment, we need to be deaung the environment, we need to be dealing with the cost of living crisis and getting costs down for families. Its why, for example, you know, to take another case that im sure will be of interest to lot be of interest to a lot of people watching this because be of interest to a lot of people be tching this because be of interest to a lot of people be impacteds because be of interest to a lot of people be impacted byecause be of interest to a lot of people be impacted by it. Use be of interest to a lot of people be impacted by it. The theyll be impacted by it. The fact that government got rid theyll be impacted by it. The fa but no, but but on that part and i know were really running out of time but but but on that point in a way, theres an argument to say theyre saving people money because reducing that band from from a d to a c would have been things like changing the windows for a lot of landlords that would have just gone on the rent at a time when rent is already going up. When rent is already going up. Up. Well actually, thats not the feedback that weve got from many tenants and indeed from landlords. You know, think that they wanted to see from government a proper plan around particularly home insulation. Weve not had that from the conservatives, labour has had that clear plan for a long time and when we could have been insulated, losing tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of homes in the time since labour called for a plan and the conservatives havent delivered it. But if you look those electricity bills look at those electricity bills that tenants are paying and how theyre going to stay stubbornly high because of government high because of those government decisions, i think most people would say that they took the wrong choice around this. Okay, look , were really at a time look, were really at a time just in 10s youve recently had a cup of bovril Anneliese Dodds no. Have i got have a cup of bovril Anneliese Dodds no. Have i got have i a cup of bovril Anneliese Dodds no. Have i got have i got some no. Have i got have i got some kind of. Kind of. No. No. Apparently its going out of fashion. Apparently its going out of fashion. I just wondered if you were a bovril fan. You certainly. You havent got the marks. No i havent had bovril. Well, maybe thats part of the problem. Guess, but ive not the problem. Guess, but ive not had it for a really long time. I mean , i had it as a kid. It was mean, i had it as a kid. It was the kind thing youd have if the kind of thing youd have if youd outside and youd been outside and got really cold came inside really cold and then came inside. But havent had it. Died. But yeah, havent had it for long and maybe, for a long time. And maybe, maybe thats why. Well, we need bring it back. Im sorry. Im sorry. Im sorry. Im to give you the im sorry to give you the frightened face. Look fine, Anneliese Dodds. Its really good to see you. Thanks much indeed. Thanks very much indeed. Say one thing . Go may i just say one thing . Go on. Was on the on. Steve reid was on the channel this week. Channel earlier this week. Shadow secretary of state for environment. Labour will environment. He said labour will insulate 19 million homes as of course, he didnt put a price on that. Course, he didnt put a price on that. No, all these promises course, he didnt put a price on that. No, all these promises is well, there is i mean , look, well, there is i mean, look, its politics, isnt it . And you have to you have to listen to the arguments and then make up your own mind as to as to who you believe or who you think do the best think is going to do the best job in all of this. I mean, certainly with i know a lot of a lot of landlords breathing a huge about the huge sigh of relief about the Energy Efficiency rating or whatever it is. Just because they were going to have to do stuff which was going to put the rent up. And they dont want to put up because theyre put the rent up because theyre tenants already struggling. Tenants are already struggling. Yeah so difficult it. Yeah so difficult one isnt it. No , you dont want people no, but you dont want people to be living in absolute hovels, but the same point. To be living in absolute hovels, but raises he same point. To be living in absolute hovels, but raises costs. Ne point. To be living in absolute hovels, but raises costs. Yeah. Nt. To be living in absolute hovels, but raises costs. Yeah. Pushes yeah. Raises costs. Yeah. Pushes landlords out of the market, maybe. Landlords out of the market, mayeah. Anyway none of it good. Yeah. Anyway none of it good. Yeah. Anyway none of it good. Youve got a view on that. Let us know. Its a joy of what we do here. We talk to everyone. You make your own mind on the you make up your own mind on the bafis you make up your own mind on the basis of what say. I like basis of what they say. I like the Anneliese Dodds basis of what they say. I like the i Anneliese Dodds basis of what they say. I like the i like eliese dodds basis of what they say. I like the i like eliese d it doesnt always come across with the nice people anyway, keep coming through. Lets head. Well, was going lets head. Well, i was going to stateside sort of to say stateside sort of stateside, because its President Biden who has reportedly promised Vladimir Zelenskyy some long range tactical missiles. Yes. This was reported yesterday by the us media that biden made the pledge during a bilateral summit at the white house on thursday, which was followed by the announcement of a new 325,000,000,000 million. I always get that wrong package of weapons and aid. Of american weapons and aid. Well, the us had been reluctant supply the weapons. Reluctant to supply the weapons. Fear that it could sort of create an escalate action with russia right. Russia right. Lets go now to Major General chip chapman , former head of chip chapman, former head of Counter Terrorism at the mod. Thank you so much joining thank you so much for joining us. Chip, what do you make of this pledge for these this potential pledge for these types of missiles to be sent to ukraine . Well its the effect it would have if they if they come. Now, if you look historically over the course of the war, weve always had four phases of these both terms of these things, both in terms of tanks, f 16s. Its no lets talk tanks, f 16s. Its no lets talk lets train and lets deliver the capability. What atacms the capability. What atacms would do , Army Tactical missiles would do, Army Tactical missiles is to push the log dumps and command and control of the russians back. So it makes that more vulnerable for the russians and gives greater logistic loops, which is a problem for russia. Well, i mean , on that basis, well, i mean, on that basis, it sounds like a comparatively straightforward common sense idea, if you like. So why has there been reluctance up until this point . This point . Well, theres always been a gradualist approach to the provision of all sorts of capabilities because of that fear of crossing a red line in terms of escalation. And thats terms of escalation. And thats escalation in terms of weapons objectives, targets , geography, objectives, targets, geography, domains or mobilisation. So this is a significant weapon with a significant targeting system, which could do significant damage. Now, whether the damage. Now, whether the russians would push back about that, who knows . I suspect not. We have the same thing with the provision of storm shadow, which we saw used yesterday to such effect on the black sea fleet headquarters in crimea. Headquarters in crimea. It may be an impossible question, but ill ask it. There are a lot of people who are concerned by how much this war is costing nato countries in terms of weapons and aid. And of terms of weapons and aid. And of course, we can argue that it is worth it to defend ukraine and its sovereignty. But how much do its sovereignty. But how much do you think its going to cost us . How much has already been pledged . How much is going to be pledged . How much is going to be pledged . And what do you think should be pledged as as much as it takes . Well thats certainly it takes . Well thats certainly been bidens line. Been bidens line. I mean, i take the view that the cost is probably better to do it now because i take the view that russia is a revanchist expansion state, which probably wouldnt stop. So stopping them wouldnt stop. So stopping them now with minimal cost, you can degrade your persistent threat without any nato boots on the significant investment for the future. Future. Okay, chip, thank you very much indeed. Appreciate it. Good to leave it there. Were having we are having technical issues this morning. A lot of lines keep dropping out a little bit are out. T t e the gremlins out are out. The gremlins out and they are the gremlins out and aboutin they are the gremlins out and about in force. Its very frustrating. But weve the gist of weve got we got the gist of what impossible. Weve got we got the gist of wh. Question impossible. Weve got we got the gist of wh. Question impoisnta. Weve got we got the gist of wh. Question impoisnt it . Question really, isnt it . Question really, isnt it . Well, yes. And no, well well, yes. And no, because it is. Who knows what the figures are. But chip the figures are. But as chip said, it is as much as it said, its it is as much as it takes because its going to be thats lot cheaper thats going to be a lot cheaper in the long run than letting russia run riot. Youve got putin having to go to north korea to get, you know, substandard weapons now. Yes. But substandard weapons now. Yes. But ill tell you, it worries me. The north korea link worries me. The north korea link worries me. The north korea link worries me because obviously , worries me because obviously, you know, kim jong un is. I wonder where that leaves. Where does that leave the whole american president ial thing in terms of what . Well, in terms of obviously, trump has got, you know, a relationship with putin. Hes also got a relationship with kim. And i therefore, i dont know if that i dont know if thats a good thing. Do you think he could be like, lads, can you just tone it down a bit . No, i dont think that would be the case. No, i think thats how hes trying to pitch it. Ramp it you think . Hed ramp it up, you think . But could. But i think it could. Well, look who knows . I dont know. Questions. Know. But it raises questions. It concerns. To it raises concerns. I want to hear to hear something hear i want to hear something from about in run from trump about that in the run up of this that hes more up to all of this that hes more considered than what hes saying now, oh, i just sort now, which is, oh, i just sort it it all out it all out. Id sort it all out before even got into the white before i even got into the white house. Well, thats not. I want more yeah well, you more detail. Yeah well, you probably it. Probably arent going to get it. Anyway, moving on to something king charles something nicer. King charles waved au revoir to france after his successful three day state visit. Yeah. The majesties boarded their plane after an ecstatic reception in bordeaux yesterday , where they tucked into cheese. And i was going to say cheese and fromage. No, thats the same thing. Cheese and wine. Thing. Cheese and wine. Yes. Overall correspondent Cameron Walker looks back on the kings visit. Say morad tahbaz 60. Say morad tahbaz 60. The given nobody in the say that he history shared and a future to build the king and queen officially welcomed to france by president macron and his wife during a rare ceremony at paris. At paris. The arc de triomphe. Yeah how the arc de triomphe. Yeah how are you . French crowds delighted that a king is back on french soil. Their last monarch forced soil. Their last monarch forced out of this place in the 1700s before meeting his fate at the guillotine. But king charles and Queen Camilla had a much more friendly welcome at the palace of versailles. A magnificent state banquet hosted in their honouh state banquet hosted in their honour. And, of course , honour. And, of course, president pompidou hosted my mother here at the palace of versailles on her second state visit in 1972 to i was reminded recently that when she returned the courtesy with dinner for the president and madame pompidou at the hotel de chevreuse , they ran the hotel de chevreuse, they ran into a little more difficulty. Into a little more difficulty. Our embassy tried to bring in several cases of english wine over from hampshire for the banquet , over from hampshire for the banquet, only to be over from hampshire for the banquet , only to be prevented by banquet, only to be prevented by a customs official at orly. A customs official at orly. Work hard , play hard for the work hard, play hard for the queen and madame macron. After a queen and madame macron. After a comfortable win from the first lady, the pair launched a new uk france literary prize, celebrating the importance of breeding and the ties between britain and france. Britain and france. Mr president , madam madame le president. Meanwhile, the king became the first member of the British Royal family to address french senators from their chamber. This is. My 35th official this is. My 35th official visit to france. Each and every visit to france. Each and every time i have been struck by the warmth of the welcome, i have always received and by the immense good that can be accomplished. When france and accomplished. When france and the United KingdomWork Together , diplomatic ties strengthened. , diplomatic ties strengthened. It took a full minute and a half for the standing ovation to conclude. Inside the chamber conclude. Inside the chamber with senator eric bouquet, chair of the france uk friendship group. So of course its great opportunity because britain and france must go on having regular and strong relationship. We are neighbours. We are still. Youre neighbours. We are still. Youre not in the in the European Union anymore , but you are still part anymore, but you are still part of europe. Okay dover is still the same distance from calais. The same distance from calais. So nothing has changed. The king and queen visited a flower market named after the late Queen Elizabeth ii. And then a short walk to Notre Dame Cathedral to meet Fire Fighters who tackled the Devastating Blaze in 2019 and those working to restore the famous landmark after french media leaked eco friendly train travel plans. Their majesties flew to bordeaux for security reasons. Wherever the king has been this week, hes genuinely received a really warm welcome. Six months ago, a tour like this would have seemed impossible. Buildings literally burning, sparks by the french pension riots. The office sent riots. The Foreign Office sent their majesties france to their majesties to france to strengthen whether strengthen relations. Whether that now translates into better trading partnerships in the post brexit world remains to be seen. Cameron walker gb news in france. France. Was a used to watch maiden yes. Was a used to watch maiden chelsea quite a lot. I like zara and now she does all these broadcasts for documentaries. Yeah, her documentaries. Yeah, her documentaries are really good. And zara is going to be paired up with graziano di palma de prima. So there are some really interesting combinations, but its all down to the audience at home because the audience have to vote for who they want and no one ever wants be the first one ever wants to be the first celebrity go and celebrity couple to go and i definitely dont think its going be angela. I think she going to be angela. I think she is to win it. Is in it to win it. Be outrage if there was id be outrage if there was now Wagatha Christie yeah, you thought it was all over. I think its over. No, its not, but its not over. Clearly theres another chapter to this saga because Coleen Rooney has revealed that she will be given her inside story of the trial in her inside story of the trial in her new book, which will be coming out in november. And its called my account. Shes already doing a drama in her own words written in her own words. Sorry, coleen , but yeah, shes already coleen, but yeah, shes already doing the drama series thats going to come out with disney where shes going to be doing a Reality Tv Show about the trial. But this book isnt only just going to be about the court case, also going to her case, its also going to be her life limelight. Because life in the limelight. Because if about coleen if you think about Coleen Rooney, introduced into rooney, she was introduced into the publics periphery when she was 16 and she was with wayne rooney and since then, shes become of four. So become a mother of four. So shes going be talking about shes to going be talking about her limelight. Her journey in the limelight. My account. My account. Good my account. Thats a good my account. Thats a good my account. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Her account was was used , her account was was used, wasnt it . It was , yes. It was, yes. Lovely. Stephanie guys, darling, coming up next, talking more in the headline makers about things like the over 50s dominating ibiza. What are they dominating ibiza. What are they doing . Theyre not teenagers. Get a grip. Get a grip. Theyve got a bit of cash. Theyve got a bit of cash. Yeah , they have. Yeah, they have. Yeah, they have. Well talk to our two panellists it is 943. This is breakfast with stephen and emily. So we have david and dawn back in the studio to talk us through some of the top headlines. Whats making the headune headlines. Whats making the headline makers . Yeah, hello. Yeah, hello. Yeah, hello. Ill tell you what, trust you to put this one in the star oldies. And im making no no comparison oldies are hijacking ibiza gold and oldies everything. If youre in your 50s, youre a golden oldie. According to this story. A golden oldie. According to this story. Right . Okay. No, thats me. Next yeah okay. No, thats me. Next year. Yeah. Am i going to be a golden oldie next year . Sorry. Oh, hell, i thought sorry. Oh, hell, i thought youd be one of those. That could be a boomer. You could be a boomer next boomer. Yayi right okay, well, this is the story that the white isle is the story that the white isle is going silver as over 50 rock, ibiza, silver haired ravers are taking over the part island, having it large end of season breaks basically among the 50 plus age group, outstripping every other age group going to ibiza. And we are going there. Were giving it large and were staying up all night and were also having rather a frisky love life out as life while were out there as well. The problem i have with this story, right, is im over 50 some golden oldie, but also the over 50 generation are the original rave generation. Well, yeah , thats true. They are yeah, thats true. They are people that went out there when they like 90. Yeah, they were sort of like 90. Yeah, exactly. So theyre over 50 now. Exactly. So theyre over 50 now. So its so these singles are these singles . Well, thats single. Theyre having an action packed frisky love life, amorous times. Yes. Well, some of them are single. Some of them might be too far. Goodness me. Goodness me. Above. I like be heavens above. I like to be in by with the whole in bed by 930 with the whole horlicks. Rave up. Does your husband know about alex . I think its good that the overfifties are rocking ibiza. Why not doing it for the last 30 years . Thats the thing. They just havent stopped. No, we just havent stopped. No, we just havent stopped. No, we just havent stopped. We . Sorry. Freudian slip. We just havent stopped. A dj in ibiza. Stopped. My mates a dj in ibiza. Shes been doing it for 30 years. Shes brilliant. Thats funny. More than thats so funny. More than 8 in 10 of the over 50 who were there said they had a perfect success rate, chatting fellow success rate, chatting up fellow clubbers to just 4 in clubbers compared to just 4 in 10 under 35. So theyre better at. Had more practise. At. Weve had more practise. Emily all right. Emily all right. Well, on that. Well, on that. All right. I need to calm down a little bit after that disturbing news. Were to be to were going to be back to you, saying, want to you, too, in saying, i want to do story. Should we . Do a dog story. Should we . Because to leeds, where because its got to leeds, where there fest this there is the dog fest this weekend, which should be rather lovely. Our yorkshire reporter anna riley is there for us now. Hi, anna. Good morning. Hi, anna. Good morning. Yes, this weekend in leeds at Harewood House is all about dogs. You can probably see behind us lots of waggy tails , lots of lots of waggy tails, lots of owners here bringing their dogs into dogs fest. And im joined into dogs fest. And im joined by tess. She into dogs fest. And im joined by tess. She is into dogs fest. And im joined by tess. She is the festival by tess. She is the festival organiser here. Tess just tell us a little bit about the day. Us a little bit about the day. Its hard to describe dog fest until you see it. I would say its kind of the glastonbury for dogs really. Its got for dogs really. Its got everything that you could really want the dogs to do from have a go activities like bale go activities like hay bale racing and dog diving catch the flag. Theres also a giant ball flag. Theres also a giant ball pit for them to jump into and theres a lovely walk which goes around this beautiful estate as well. And yeah, lots of also well. And yeah, lots of also shops and food and drink and the dogs will get spoilt today and theres thousands of people at dogs and their owners that are to going come across this weekend and its about advice as well , isnt weekend and its about advice as well, isnt it, as well as these competitions and shopping events . Yeah, i mean, were all about but we always promote about fun, but we always promote its responsible dog its all about responsible dog ownership. We work ownership. So we work with partners have dogs partners like we have the dogs trust here who will talk about, you rehoming and also just you know, rehoming and also just making sure environments are right dogs. Weve also right for the dogs. Weve also got behaviourist who can help right for the dogs. Weve also got esocialisationvho can help right for the dogs. Weve also got esocialisation and an help right for the dogs. Weve also got esocialisation and also elp right for the dogs. Weve also got esocialisation and also just with socialisation and also just veterinary nurses and people who can give you some just some things that you might not know about your you know and you about your dog you know and you can access it here. And steven, he is has a puppy one of our presenters, a lovely puppy, by the way, steven, what sort of advice would you give new advice would you give to new dog owners, puppy owners, whether its for a puppy or whether got an older or whether theyve got an older rescue i think its rescue dog . Well, i think its theres so much information out theres so much information out there and i think the there as well. And i think the best that you do is best thing that you can do is make sure that you are you have your right. Your environment. Right. You really think big really think its a big commitment you commitment having a dog, you know, youve got your know, so once youve got your dog, that dog, its making sure that theyre properly. And theyre socialised properly. And a that actually a lot of that is actually getting them out, making sure theyre meeting dogs, theyre meeting other dogs, know how and if there how to behave. And then if there are little issues, just are any little issues, just speaking behaviour getting speaking to behaviour is getting advice from many of the charities that available to charities that are available to do and theres so do that as well. And theres so many on today , but many competitions on today, but what say the best one what would you say the best one is your favourite . I think id have go the waggiest have to go with the waggiest tail it is tail competition. It is hilarious. Theres about a minute they make them all minute and they make them all stand up and just wag their tails its absolute tails from it. Its absolute carnage, but its the funniest thing ill. Ill thing to watch. Ill. Ill definitely out for that. Waggy tails so here waggy tails contest. So here we fest in leeds. We are at dogs fest in leeds. Promises to have lots of waggy tails im going to be tails and im going to be looking out for that competition later. Lovely stuff, adam, and oh, lovely stuff, adam, and thank for spotting rex the thank you for spotting rex the ridgeback on twitter and all the social medias and things. Bless you. Thank social medias and things. Bless you. Thank you very much. Weve been that. Anna and you been watching that. Anna and you a person. A dog person. David oh, absolutely , yes. David oh, absolutely, yes. Ive got my little cocker spaniel at home. Amber do you know stuff . Behave yourself. I wonder if amber would like my cockapoo bob oh, they could be friends. Yes, absolutely. Be friends. Yes, absolutely. Amber is a senior lady now. Shes 11, but shes great. She shes11, but shes great. She sits at my feet when i do my radio show. And occasionally she she barks. So shes become a sort of character. And when people dont hear her, they miss her. And they say, wheres amber today. Her. And they say, wheres amber today. Shed gone walkies. Today. Shed gone walkies. Oh she said he sent may i just say on the ibiza for the over 50. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh jason says hi stephen as a 55 year old are generation made ibiza. What it was exactly and its still now you know no no there you go. I agree. I do agree with that. Keep clubbing, mate. Keep clubbing, mate. I do. I do agree with that. But. So the youngsters wont take over everything , dont they . Yeah, but they dont. Yeah, but they dont. They cant party. Cant they cant party. They cant party generation. Stephen no, theres no carefree, you know, not as carefree. Know, not as carefree. Heres a cheery line for us this morning from a celeb. Everyones going to die. Yeah, but at least ive made it to 90. Yes thats Michael Caines quote on the front of the. Its not wrong. Its not wrong. We are all to going die. We are all to going die. Thats his quote on the front of the telegraph today. Hes been interviewed by mick brown for the telegraph magazine , for the telegraph magazine, musing life. Well lived. Musing on a life. Well lived. Hes had a career thats lasted 73 years, not a lot of people know that. Oh , oh, oh out david. Oh, oh, oh out david. Oh, oh, oh out david. But he was asked , youre like but he was asked, youre like this. He was asked , whats the best he was asked, whats the best thing about being 90 . And he said , nobody expects you to do said, nobody expects you to do much and everybody does things for you. Oh, brilliant. Oh, brilliant. Thats right. Thats right. I just worked out that since my since i last saw you, ive had another birthday. Have you. What are you now. What are you now. So im now actually nearer 90 than 80. So no i expect you to do things for me now. Make me a nice cup when i come in nice cup of tea when i come in here. Will. Ill whatever you will. Ill do whatever you want. Want. I just want to say that its been brilliant working with david again, but i just think david again, but i just think david and Michael Caine this david and Michael Caine and this generation. Im just in awe generation are. Im just in awe of them because theyre showing you you can still do it. You that you can still do it. You still there. You you can still be out there. You can be living your life. Can still be living your life. You can still keep going. I think its so inspirational. Yeah people to be yeah well, people used to be considered at 60. I know you considered old at 60. I know you were a granny. You know, women were a granny. You know, women were sort of in were meant to be sort of like in shaws and knitting at 50. And now all clubbing , now were all going clubbing, and i beat that. I think ill tell the key, dawn, tell you, part of the key, dawn, is working. Is to keep working. Yeah. And find something you love, love. I love my love, which i love. I love my music and i love broadcasting and keep doing it another little tip is in the morning. Do a crossword. Gets your brain going. Is that true . Although that ive heard about stretching the mind. I think its true. And hopefully, you know, staves off dementia. And the other thing is that a lot of it is in here. If you tell yourself youre old, you tell yourself youre old, you will be old. But if you think young , youll stay young. Think young, youll stay young. And i think thats the key. Yeah, well, of course youve got mrs. H to keep you young. Well, i attribute everything to quite right. To her. Yes, quite right. Yes. Yes. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, thats great advice. That means i might get some lunch when i get up. You might do. Weve been talking hs2 all morning , and the theres money morning, and the theres money to be made. To be made. There is money to be made. And its taxpayer money as well. This is its a different slot on the hs2 story. Aston villa have the hs2 story. Aston villa have received £20 million of taxpayer money in hs2 compensation as a corner of their Training Ground, which is called whats it called . I cant find the name of the Training Ground now, but in any case, a Little Corner of their Training Ground was requisitioned for hs2. Was it . And they were given £20 million in compensation , which, to be in compensation, which, to be fair to aston villa, they have used build a new training used to build a new Training Ground encourage youngsters ground to encourage youngsters £20 could a bit of my you could have a bit of my garden for 10 million. Oh , and the problem . The oh, and the problem . The reason this story is annoying people is that aston villa is owned by by multi millionaires. Well billionaires. So. Yeah. How eveh well billionaires. So. Yeah. How ever. And there are lots of people who have had their properties and their land requisitioned for hs2 who are still waiting for their compensation in china. You know, these you know, they get these Infrastructure Projects done so quickly wouldnt any quickly they wouldnt give any compensation. They just like compensation. They just do like move. Move. Get t. T. No, get out of our way. No, get out of our way. Were down track. Were laying down this track. Were laying down this track. Remember the old just just remember the old saying, money comes to those who have money. Indeed. Yes, indeed. Yes, indeed. Thats true. Its true. What do make of the whole hs2 do you make of the whole hs2 thing, david . I mean, its now going outside of going from somewhere outside of london to birmingham and thats it. It. Biggest the biggest up since gallipoli , do you think . It has . Gallipoli, do you think . It has . Its been a complete disaster. Would you would you scrap it or would you the labour party are saying us, were saying, you saying to us, were saying, you know, weve plough on, know, weve got to plough on, youve get done, but youve got to get it done, but get manchester, got get to manchester, theyve got to birmingham now. Finish, to go to birmingham now. Finish, finish birmingham and finish it to birmingham and forget on. Sadly forget carrying on. Sadly carrying on to manchester. Yeah well, i think so. I mean i dont think you can scrap it completely. I weve spent so much money on it. You know, its estimated now to cost £100 billion. Yeah. That is insane. I think weve got to cut our losses. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Ive spent so much on it already. Im not entirely sure. Im not entirely sure. Maybe its just too old fashioned. Lana says our technology has changed our ways of working have changed. We need to move forward. Which is which is true. Were not. Were not using the transport in the same way. Not mm m way. Not point in doing it not much point in doing it because are no trains because there are no trains running. Running anyway. Yeah, most the time thats yeah, most of the time thats true. E e about about but you see about about scrapping it all because a lot of people are saying well just scrap tended scrap it, which i tended towards, eddie says. I work on the on up to litchfield the on the hs2 up to litchfield , only 35 miles from nottingham , although not the best idea to spend money, it has secured jobs and improved the rest of the railway. Railway system. Yeah, those jobs would yeah, but those jobs would have elsewhere. You know, have been elsewhere. You know, they people would have they those people would have jobs elsewhere. I cant have Infrastructure Projects just to create jobs. Can you . Can you . Can you . This is about levelling up the that they are the fact that they are now thinking about obviously it probably not to going manchester. Mean, what message manchester. I mean, what message is this giving to the people in the north . Its like, well, we dont actually really care. Yeah. And the that its yeah. And the fact that its stopping miles outside of stopping six miles outside of london, whats the point of that . Yeah, well, look, dawn, david, joy and david, it has been a joy and a pleasure. Thank you very much. Thank you. It us. Thank you. That is it from us. Breakfast morning breakfast back tomorrow morning at but esther phil at 6 00. So thatd be interesting to get the results of that, too. Were also going to be speaking almost 50 years on to the sun of the first victim of the yorkshire ripper. Were going to be asking him doesnt think he him why he doesnt think he should ripper and should be called the ripper and also have such a also why we have such a fascination serial killers fascination with serial killers and weve got friend of the show, harry redknapp, coming on
