The election. What im hearing and this is from a group that came from portland, oregon, believe it or not, where were always thinking about antifa and other protests that are extremely upset that theyre being lumped in with individuals that would break windows or who would in any way seem and sound like they were violently trying to threaten members of congress. We knew this would happen when you had a huge group of people desending on capitol hill, when you have members of the trump support organizations and antifa threatening to show up at the same time. Well learn more to the extent this that happened. Im getting a sense that theres clearly a big split in the maga groups that have come to peacefully protest with whoever is behind this intrusion in the capitol, which by any account is unacceptable. The president needed to clear this capitol and work with the authorities that he supports and he did make that clear. He said you have to support the police and be calm. You know, as you noted, when things start to get dark and the sun goes down, you know, we dont know what can happen. This need to be cleared long before that. Bill two things, laura, to add to that as youre talking, receiving texts from Trump Supporters as i will characterize at. Theyre at the trump hotel in washington. They were at the elipse earlier which is where the president made his address. As i walked around, 99 of the people are normal. This is what were watching is very, very sad with the seemingly few crazy people ruining it for the rest of us. That goes what youre talking about, laura. I was at Lafayette Park the weekend of memorial day on that monday night when the st. John church was set on fire and the utility building. Its a Historic Building a small building in Lafayette Park was smashed in to and tried to burn that down. That was chaotic. Brings were thrown. A lot of the people that im glad condemning any violence or intrusion into federal installations and so forth were markedly silent when there was widespread violence and pushing back on police and National Guard troops and attempts to breach that fence outside the white house perimeter. So that was happening and that was terrifying. I was there. It wasnt roses and sunshine and peaceful. They tried to burn down st. Johns church. We all as americans have to be concerned when the system of government is not trusted by tens of millions of people on both sides. In 2016, the left tried to take down that duly elected president. In 2020, we have tens of millions of americans that believe that state legislatures and state officialings didnt follow their own rules and laws and did not properly account for votes. That has to be addressed. So we need to restore faith in the system and what were seeing today im afraid is not going to restore faith in the system and probably not going to accomplish a lot either. Bill thank you, laura. Well see you later this evening. See where we are then, huh . Six hours from now. Thank you, laura. A statement from the attorney general, bill barr. He writes the following. It short and to the point. The violence at the Capitol Building is outrageous and it is despicable. Federal agencies should move immediately to disburse it. Think about that incident from st. Johns church from Lafayette Park. That was a moment where bill barr was not happy either. He and the president , others made it known when they made their march across Lafayette Park to stand in front of the church then. We have noticed now from the president elect, joe biden, hes about to make a statement. I do believe hes in wilmington, delaware. Unless advised otherwise. Theres the picture now. So as we await to hear from him, well just update you on what weve been watching for the past several hours. If you have not been with us, it has been an extraordinary 24 hours. Here in atlanta, georgia, in full fulton county, you have the control of the u. S. Senate hanging in the balance. And 24 hours later, were watching this. Weve delayed, ive delayed coming out to speak to you. Initially i was going to talk about the economy. All of you, all of you have been watching what ive been watching. At this hour our democracy is under unprecedented assault. Up like anything weve seen in modern times. Assault on the citadel of liberty, the capitol itself. And assault open the peoples representatives, the capitol hill police, sworn to protect, from the Public Servants that work at the heart of our republic. An assault on the rule of law like few times weve ever seen it. An assault on the most sacred of american undertakings, doing of the peoples business. Let me be very clear. The scenes of chaos at the capitol do not reflect a true america. Do not represent who we are. What were seeing are a small number of extremists dedicated to the lawlessness. This is not dissent. This is disorder. Its chaos. Borders on sadition and it must end now. I call on this mob to pull back and allow the work of democracy to go forward. You heard me say before a different context. The words of a president matter, no matter how good or bad that president is. At their best, the word of a president can inspire. At their worst, they can incite. Therefore i call on President Trumpto go on National Television now to fulfill his oath and defend the constitution and demand an end to this siege. Storm the capitol to smash windows, to occupy offices. The floor of the United States senate rummaging through desks. On the capitol, on the house of representatives. Threatening the safety of duly elected officialings. Its not protests. Its insurrection. The world is watching. Like so many other americans, im genuinely shocked and saddened that our nation, so long the beacon of light and hope for democracy has come to such a dark moment. Through war and strife, america has endured much. We will endure here and we will prevail again. We will prevail now. The work of the moment and the work of the next four years must be the restoration of democracy, of decency, honor, respect, the rule of law. Just plain something decency. The renewal of politics. Its about solving problems, looking another for one another. Not stoking the flames of chaos. America is about honor, decency, respect. Tolerance. Thats who we are. Thats who we have always been. The certification of the Electoral College vote is supposed to be a sacred ritual a firm purposes to affirm the majesty of american democracy. Todays a reminder of a painful one, democracy is fragile and to preserve it requires people of goodwill, leaders of the courage to stand up who are devoted not to the pursuit of power or the personal interests pursuits of their own selfish interests at any costs, but of the common good. Think what our children watching television are thinking. Think what the rest of the world is looking at. For nearly 2 1 2 centuries, we the people in search of a more Perfect Union have kept our eyes on that common good. American is so much better than what we have seen today. Watching the scenes from the capitol are a reminder as i prepared other speeches, words of abraham lincoln, his annual message to continue, whose work as today has been interrupted by chaos. This is what lincoln said. He said we shall nobelly save or nearly lose the last best hope on earth. He went on to say, the way is plain, peaceful, generous, just. A way which it followed the world will forever applaud and god must forever bless. The way is plain here, too. Thats who we are. Its the way of democracy. Of respect. Of decency, of honor. The commitment the patriots to this nation. Not withstanding what i saw today, were seeing today, i remain optimistic about the incredible opportunities. Theres never been anything we cant do when we do it together. This god awful display today, bringing home to every republican and democrat and independent in the nation, we must step up. This is the united state of america. Theres never ever, ever, ever been a thing that weve tried to do that weve done it together and not been able to do it. President trump, step up. May god bless america, may god protect our troops and all those folks at the capitol trying to preserve order. Thank you and sorry to have kept you waiting. Bill sober state from the president elect, joe biden. He will be inaugurated two weeks from today, co incidentally. Calling on the president to go before a camera and speak to it. Called it a siege, a storming of the capitol. Hang on. Hes still talking. Enough is enough is enough. Bill that is that from wilmington. I want to read the a. G. s statement that came to us a few momentsing again. This is bill barr talking. The violence at the Capitol Building is outrageous and despicable. Federal agencies should move immediately to disburse it. John roberts now regarding from Kayleigh Mcenany , that President Trumps direction, the National Guard is on the way with other federal services. We it rate the president s call to remain peaceful. A chance to hear from the president. Well await more information on that as we move throughout the afternoon. Were about 45 minutes from darkness in the nations capitol. Juan, chris, martha and bret, our coverage continues here. Juan i havent spoken to you in some time. I want your thought now. Well, i think what we just saw is president elect biden trying to assert some sense of leadership saying that is not who we are as an American People and doing so with some passion and especially just as he was exiting there, what you heard, bill, is he was saying enough is enough. I think the point of his message was really to President Trump. He said a president s words matter and they can inspire but they can also incite and then as you just pointed out, he called on President Trump to go on tv now. He said now and defend the constitution and demand an end to this siege. So to me bill i dont want to interrupt you but i apologize. Weve got some more news. Joe bidens message was stepped up. I want to bring bret baier back in here. Were getting a word here that we may hear from the president only camera very soon. Yeah, the white house reaching out saying theres a taped message done and it will be it will be coming shortly, were told in the next ten minutes. So as the president elect was saying, step up and talk to the American People. There was a message were told that is already ready to go. And we should get an alert that its coming very soon. Bill okay. Well stand by for that. Juan, i apologize for the interruption. Continue. No, i think bidens message, especially, you have to imagine that theres social media, people there on the scene at the capitol, aware of these messages that are coming from american leaders. I think its important that they understand that people like lindsey graham, a strong Trump Supporters says this is a National Embarrassment. Tom cotton, a senator from arkansas, calls this unacceptable. Anarchy. Adam kinsinger, another republican saying this is a coup. I think people have to hear loud and clear that joe biden be as a democrat say hes willing to work with everyone but this is a National Embarrassment and republican leadership, Kevin Mccarthy here earlier saying this is not go on. This should not be the case. Kevin mccarthy saying gun shots. We learned about the woman that was shot. So when we hear from biden today say this is unprecedented assault open democracy, at some point you think is this hyperbole, is this too much. The scenes that were witnessing right this moment on National Television as biden said, these are images that go to our children, that go to us and this is not who we are. We should not become we should not devolve at being at each others throats in this way. Bill thank you, juan. Again, the message from the president is a few moments ago way. As we talked will be delivered by twitter. Well wait for that message. We want to get to Chris Wallace again for his latest evaluation. Chris. Yeah, i think, bill, that its easy as were discussing this to do the play by play and not to put it in the context in the sweep of the history of this country that it deserves. I think bill chris, i apologize. I apologize. I have the message now from the president. Im going to play it off of my computer, guys. We dont have it uploaded. You can hear the audio now. I know youre pain, i know youre hurt. We have an election that was stolen from us. It was a landslide election, everyone knows it, especially the other side. But you have to go home now. We have to have peace. We have to have law and order. We have to respect our great people and law and order. We dont want anybody hurt. Its a very tough period of time. Theres never been a time like this where such a thing happened, where they could take it away from all of us, from me, from you and from our country. This was a fraudulent election. We cant play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace. So go home, we love you, youre very special. Youve seen what happens. You can see the way others are treating that so bad and so evil. I know how you feel. But go home and go home in peace. Bill so theres the message from the president. Go home, go home in peace. I was just play thats off the computer here. I apologizes for the buzzes and the beeps in the background. That is reality in a breaking news situation. Chris, i apologize for interrupting you. Continue. No, breaking news always comes first. Interesting the president s message, its not necessarily the strong condemnation that i think a lot of people wanted and expected. But perhaps he knows his supporters better than anybody else and knows that by siding with their sense of grievance by saying enough is enough that that is the most effective way. Well see whether or not people will leave or not. What i was saying is, i think joe biden put it in the right context as of what were seeing today and what it means when he talked about an unprecedented assault on democracy. This is not dissent. This borders on sadition. Its not protest, its insurrection. For the president elect of the United States that will take the oath of office if youre looking at the picture there and see where the American Flag is in the center of the screen, that is the inaugural stand. This is where two weeks from today joe biden is going to stand, put his left hand on the bible, raise his right hand and talk the oath of office. Thats where protesters have run rampant today. You know, it is extraordinary and it is i think fair to say as biden said an unprecedented assault on our democracy. I hope i have some pictures. At one point they said that members of the house needed to put on their escape masks to leave the house. We wonder whats those looked like. Do we have those on the screen . David trone, a congressman from maryland. Its not that. That is a some pictures of its not that either. In any case, he put up pictures of him wearing a gas mask. You know there we go. This is what this is a duly elected member of the house. This is how the members of the house of representatives and members of the senate were forced to leave the house chamber. Hes there in the gallery above the house claim chamber today. They were performing a constitutional duty to certify the electoral vote because of this mob that penetrated the capitol. Its a pretty extraordinary thing. I dont think as tough as joe bidens words were about assault and insurrection, i dont think theyre overstated, bill. Bill thank you, chris. Be back with you shortly. Want to bring in katie pavlich. Still have martha we me. Katie, i havent had a chance to talk with you this afternoon. I dont know where you are and what youve been observing. Lets bring you in and get the remarks first. Good afternoon. Good afternoon, bill. Yeah, just watching everything unfold this afternoon. I think what were watching is a complete break down in the trust and belief in our institutions. You have this playing out on capitol hill. Its very clear the culmination over the last four years till now is what is resulting in this with none of it being justified. You look at joe bidens statement. It is tough, but at the same time, lets not forget that the dnc and the Biden Campaign refused to condemn the violence and burning of our cities all summer long until the polling showed that it was affecting their campaign, they didnt discuss it one time. The dnc convention. Now hes trying to come out as the Vice President elect and condemn the violence. He should. Theyre both bad. Theres a lack of credibility here when it comes to this issue. This is a complete break down, a night mare scenario of a lack of confidence in hour institutions in america, the way that we deal with each others differences is through voting, through debate. Thats exactly what lawmakers were doing on the floor of the senate and the house today. They were expressing their objections through the First Amendment right to the process that theyre seeing playing out. It divulged into this. When you saw the summer the protesting and rioting outside the white house, you now cant go see the front of the white house. Theres a large barrier around the front of it. So americans that come to washington d. C. Cant go visit the peoples house as a result of that. Now after years of the capitol being open an accessible to americans, they will no longer to be able to go to their place and speak to their representatives. Its a bad day. Bill in the mid 90s when the Oklahoma City bombing went down, thats when the perimeter moved out from the white house. We remember that clearly from the days of bill clinton. We now have the tape cued and on camera. Heres the president from the white house a few moments ago with a message for america. So thats what we call a te technical glitch. He has a message a minute in length. He concludes it by saying go home, go home and go in peace. That is the message from President Trump. It was released right around the time that joe biden had come out and called to the president to speak to it on camera. That is what the commanderinchief has done. Well play it for you when we can. Mean time, want to bring in Martha Maccallum. Want to give you breaking news as well. Well hold on fire on that for now. Nothing confirmed in georgia. It is a curious situation, martha, how you we were all together late into the night, watching these two runoffs and trying to see who would control power in congress. Then everything went sideways in washington d. C. Around 1 00 this afternoon. This is the world that weve lived in especially over the last 1 1 2 years. You look at how much pressure and stress americans have been under with if coronavirus pandemic, which sun relenting and still a big part of every ones lives. All of these things are part of the fabric of 2020. I think theres a lot of emotion, a lot of museum pain in the country. Weve seen these ambushes and assaults over the course of the year. We saw them in the zone in seattle. Weve seen them at mcconnells house and pelosis house and most recently at senator hawleys house. Now it has flown sort of overflows into this high place of american democracy in the capitol. It worth pointing out that, you know, the group of people that breached these walls are it a crime. They committed a crime and should be prosecuted for it. Eric trump was tweeting that. Other supporters of the president are it tweeting that. You cannot put a broad brush over this. Its extraordinary and awful. Theres hundreds of people involved in this today. Well get numbers eventually. Theres reports just on the news front as we follow the headlines that come across it, the fbi is working on some devices and making sure that they are not devices that they need to be worried about. Theres really an all hands on deck effort. National guard is being deployed, secret service as well to help diffuse this crowd has been pointed out many times, that we need to have this settled before dark and get back to the business at hand, which is the certification of the president ial election. Its a day that none of us will ever forget. We dont know where it goes from here. I dont think its over when the sun goes down tonight. This is a story that well be following for days and perhaps weeks and months bill. Bill lets hope were wrong on the last point. Take 2. The president with his message. I know youre pain, i know your hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us. It was a landslide election. Everyone knows it. Especially the other side. You have to go home now. We have to have peace. We have to have law and order, we have to respect our great people in law and order. We dont want anybody hurt. Its a very tough period of time. Theres never been a time like this where such a thing happened where they could take it away from all of us, from me, from you, from our country. This was a fraudulent election. We cant play in to the hands of these people. We have to have peace. So go home. We love you. Youre very special. Youve seen what happens. Youve seen the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. I know how you feel. But go home and go home in peace. Bill go home and go home in peace. The message from the president. That is the message from the white house. Well see how things transpire now. 4 30 p. M. In washington. Sunday goes down in half an hour and the night in dc has been down right rough for the past six months plus. To bret baier on the moves of the National Guard that may happen later on. Hello. A lot of concern about as evening falls. Weve been mentioning it, making sure the security is set up. Its going to take some time as i said before. There has been off and on a number of suspicious packages found around the Capitol Building and some areas have been evacuated. Theyve been cleared one by one. There is a real concern about other things possibly happening around this. I think its important as chris did to take a 30,000 foot here how this day started. The president started with a very trumpian speech on the national mall. He did stir up those supporters. Also during that he said he expected his Vice President to stand up and to just throw the states back to state legislatures. It didnt happen. Bill i apologize. But i mentioned this. We have a call to make. Fox news can now confirm that jon ossoff, age 33, a firsttime u. S. Senator will go to washington after defeating david purdue, the 71yearold republican that was seeking reelection in a razor tight election. One that could still possibly go to a recount. Fox news projects that ossoff will win that Georgia Senate seat. So ossoff along with Raphael Warnocks victory in the middle of the night over Kelly Loeffler now enables the democrats to go 20 here in georgia and now take a simple majority in the u. S. Senate where Kamala Harris breaking any ties at 5050. This was without a doubt the worst Case Scenario for the Republican Party over the past two months going back to the election defeat of donald trump. To lose two seats in the southeast and in a state that has been relatively reliably conservative and republican for 20 years. Jon ossoff, the democratic newcomer will now be the youngest u. S. Senator in history. To Martha Maccallum and bret baier for reaction on this. Martha . What do you think . Well, this is decisive as you point out. There was a lot of indication that this could be within the. 5 percent that would allow a recount here. I think this has been and extraordinary period for Stacey Abrams that did not win her dream of the governorship and felt it was robbed from her and put every bit of her energy to building a new electorate in georgia. She added 500,000 people in the voter rolls. She essentially has been able to do what President Trump was able to do on the other side where he brought out rural voters, people that felt that they were the nor gotten men and women. She reached to her voters on the democratic side and never voted before in georgia. This is a change moment. Look at georgia, arizona and look back over a period of time. As you say, the south has been very republican, the deep south and some of these areas seem to be changing, becoming more purple. In this case, this state is the looking purple blue at this point. So i think its also just something to think about when you think about the last election of President Trumps ability to bring out African American voters and bring out latino, hispanic voters as well. Minority voters. That is n a area that when you start to redraw the way you look at the two parties and you look for those areas of growth, the Republican Party will have a lot of reflection to do in terms of how to rebuild and what the Party Looks Like going forward. This is going to be a very challenge time for the Republican Party given the fact that theres an immense sleeve with those supporting President Trump and those that believe that he should have handled this post election period differently. Bill i mention hes age 33. Joe biden was 29 when he won his election. He make take a previous comment, joe biden went on to washington in a career that extended well now some 45 plus years. To bret baier. Bret, your reaction to the news here that democrats have run the table in georgia. 20. Bill first of all, its historic, first African American senator and first jewish senator from the state of georgia. Now democrats for the first time have that control of those two senate seats and they also have control of the chamber. That changes the Bidens Administration of how they will deal with legislation. Weve had two senior republicans, both loyal to President Trump say this is one of the worst days for republicans that they can imagine in some time. Not only losing the senate, but also seeing what was happening on the mall and on the capitol and where they are now. So for the Republican Party, this day is a gut punch. It is going to take some recovery to figure out where the party goes from here. Most urgently to clear out the capitol, make it safe and continue the process of certifying electors. Bill thanks, bret. Want to get back to chad pergram. Were about to find out what sort of security may be coming or forthcoming or may have already arrived, chad. An update from you now on the hill. Good afternoon here. This is still a very tense scene on capitol hill. Members have gone to their offices. Theyre sheltering in place. Others have been able to get off campus. Theres concern our colleague jake gibson reports that they found devices around the capitol hill with pipes and wires. Theyre unsure if theyre explosive devices. When this mob burst in to the capitol this afternoon, it interrupted one of the most solemn and important moments in american democracy. Here is what is clear today. The mob has won and democracy has lost. Members were barricaded in the chambers. Guns were drawn. Protesters got into the senate chamber, got up on the dais where mike pence presided earlier. Rather remarkable. This is the most significant breach of anything in any sort of incursion into the capitol since the british burned the building august 24, 1814. This is a big day, bill, in american democracy. Weve heard stories of members of congress, Lisa Blount Rochester huddling with fellow colleagues in the house chamber, leading them in prayer. There was concern that shots could be fired. We had instances where the security drew guns, went to the glass windows. You could hear im told some of the glass being broken out in the hallway between the house chamber. One shot fired inside the capitol. Were told its unclear who fired the shot. Weve had other Security Breaches here at the capitol. We had puerto rican nationalists that got off shots in the house chamber. Theres bullet holes in the Wooden Furniture in the gallery. We had two Capitol Police officers shot and killed in july of 1998. Had in the middle of the government shut down in the fall of 2013 a woman who caused a disturbance at the white house and drove to the capitol, chased by Capitol Police and eventually shot and killed here. This sun like anything weve seen here in the capitol since 1814. The images are stunning. Stand by. Want to bring in ted williams, former d. C. Homicide detective. Are you in washington now first off . No, im not downtown washington. My law office is bill all right. So youve been watching the story and the reporting throughout the day. Ted, how does this happen . You know, i got to say this, bill. Im very troubled by this. But this has to be laid directly to the foot of the president of the United States. He incited this, he encouraged this. The president of the United States told them to go up there. As a result of that, they have taken over the peoples house. They have breached the house. I was happy to hear ted call them a mob. Thats what we have up there now, a mob. They need to be dealt with as you would deal with any mob. Bill ted, theres protests that come to washington d. C. All the time. Some of them are massive. How does the Capitol Police how does the d. C. Police get ready for those . You know, they the Capitol Police, the District Of Columbia police, the fbi, the park police, they all have meetings and they all know the various territory in which theyre going to cover. But they have never, never had a scenario or situation where people have rushed the capitol like we have seen here today. So this is something of First Impression and theres time to deal with it accordingly without more people being harmed, bill. Bill what is your take on things in washington after dark . There is a situation that weve watched i mean, what happens when the lights go down, ted . Weve seen what happened the last time that the lights went down. There were proud boys, at least four of them that were stabbed. A lot of fights there. Im expecting this is a sad commentary. Im expecting tonight, there will be a lot of trouble in washington. Theres no way you can get around that. So all you can do is do what is happening. Bring Law Enforcement agencies in from other jurisdictions, get the National Guard in there, try to protect the people and the citizens of that town, washington d. C. I can tell you, the buildings will are boarded up. But the citizens there, youre going to have on one side the proud boys and other right wing groups. The other side youll have antifa, black lives matter. When theres a collision like this in washington d. C. , somebody could be very seriously hurt unfortunately. Bill ted, stand by. We have video here. I want to tell our audience, the first time were seeing it. Its described as a graphic image of a woman who was apparently shot earlier today. Were going to put the image on screen and share this with you. We dont have an age. Were told shes in critical condition. Shes alive and being treated at a local hospital. This came to us from some individuals on capitol hill. The reason why were bringing this to you is that when we came on the air around 3 00, almost two hours ago, Kevin Mccarthy, the House Minority leader, from california was listening to the capitol his police radio at the time. He was describing the fact that shots had been fired. At the time we werent sure whether or not someone had fired at police or the fire was returned on some of the protesters. This is clearly an individual. We dont know the circumstances entirely was who was fighting for life on capitol hill and now fighting for life at a local hospital. We wish her certainly the best there. Well bring you updates on her condition. Wanted to share the reality for what was happening inside the Capitol Building. Also we want to make it clear, this is the only reported shot fired and the only reported shooting that has come to the fox news desk since that time. So hopefully as we move through the evening, the level of violence will not come anywhere near the story that i just relayed to you. So Donna Brazile and katie pavlich, lets get some analysis and try to figure out what comes of washington d. C. And what comes of the u. S. After we watch these images. That on screen, dana, the first video passed along to us when you have the barricades set up on the side of the Capitol Building when some of the folks that came to washington d. C. To support President Trump had moved down the National Lawn and then breached those barricades and then after that, well, we know what happened. Donna, ive not had you on yet today. Lets begin with you and your reflections. Bill, as you can imagine, this is a very sad time for those of us that are residents of the District Of Columbia. We have seen protesters. We know why they have come to advocate for their views and positions and understand theyre protected by the constitution. Through the many decades that ive been here, we worked with every Police Department around this city. I have Great Respect for the work that they do. Sadly today what i witnessed and what the American People witnessed is an insurrection. Yes, i say it was aninsurrection. I was there in 1998 when we had to stay in place as two officers were gunned down. I was on the hill also as a staff person when i saw not only the peaceful transfer of power but i witnessed all of those moments that we were watching before this occurred. Im glad the president has told the mob to go home. Im glad that he has finally stood up to those that were inciting this violence. But it is the work of all of us, not just the president and the president elect, but all of us american citizens to understand at this moment we deserve better. We can settle our disputes peacefully, lawfully. We can follow the dictates of our conscious whether we like someone or not like someone. I called him president because he is president donald trump. I called george w. Bush after that election in 2000 president george w. Bush. We dont settle. Bill donna, i apologize. I know youre coming to a conclusion in your thought. I apologize. Heres the d. C. Mayor at the microphone. Which includes credentialed media engaging in essential functions. As you can see from video images, the unlawful behavior inside the United StatesCapitol Building. I continue the urge all washingtonians to stay home and stay calm. If you see something, say something. The behavior that were witnessing is shameful, unpatriotic and above all, its unlawful. Anyone who has engaged in these activities, continue to engage in these activities will be held accountable. There will be law and order and this behavior will not be tolerated. The metropolitan Police Department has been deployed to assist the United StatesCapitol Police and restoring order to the capitol and our chief of police will lead the command to clear the Capitol Building and establish a perimeter around the capitol. I have requested both the Virginia State police and the Maryland State Police to deploy officers and they have engaged immediately to deploy officers to the metropolitan Police Department to help regain control of the United States capitol. I have also invoked several days ago a standing Mutual Aid Group with our surrounding jurisdictions and i want to thank them for deploying. Those jurisdictions include arlington county, Prince Georges County and baltimore city. We want to thank them for sending their officers in, assisting us with Public Safety in the district as well as response to the u. S. Capitol building. I want to acknowledge and thank the new Jersey State Police who will also be assisting the metropolitan Police Department. So with that, i want to turn to chief conte for an update. Well take brief questions after that. Thank you, mayor. Good afternoon. Thank you, mayor bowser. Im robert j. Conte iii. As you are aware, demonstrators came to our city this morning to exercise theirs First Amendment rights and largely concentrated in the area of the national mall. Follow the president s remarks, the large crowd marched west. There was a noticeable change in their demeanor. They breached the fencing along the u. S. Capitol grounds and confronted police lines surrounding the building. Mpd was requested by the United StatesCapitol Police to provide assistance with crowd management and due to the violent behavior towards the Police Officers there and their intent on gaining access to the capitol, a riot was declared. It was clear that the crowd was intent on causing home to our officers by deploying chemical irritants on police and force entry to the u. S. Capitol building. As youre aware, they were able to gain access to the Capitol Building and i can confirm that one civilian was reported to have sustained a gunshot wound inside of the capitol. Details of the shooting are not immediately available and the situation remains under investigation. The metropolitan Police Department will be taking the lead on that investigation. Mpd continues to provide Personnel Resources and assistance on the grounds of the u. S. Capitol and has requested the assistance of Law Enforcement partners who have previously in place mutual aid agreement. A 6 00 p. M. Curfew has been put in place tonight and will be in effect until 6 00 a. M. Tomorrow, january 7. Were advising everyone, everyone that is not engaged in essential activity to get off the streets and adhere to the curfew. If youre found to be in violation, police will be required to take action. Again, in i want to make it clear, please abide by the curfew or people will be subject to arrest. Lastly, i know many of you are familiar with the metropolitan Police Department. Understand theres no Better Agency in the country to handle First Amendment events. They happen on a regular basis here in our city. However, todays events were not representation of peaceful protests. Today what we witnessed was unlawful riotous behavior. People that come to our city that do this will be held accountable. We can take any questions after you may have after the secretary has a chance to speak. Thank you. Around 3 00 this afternoon, we mobilized the d. C. National guard. We have 100 personnel convening to support metro p. D. And reestablishing the safety and be the confines of the u. S. Capitol. We will also be working with other federal Law Enforcement entities and coming here to the metropolitan Police Station to add Additional Support and capability as they continue to clear the operation. Thank you. How does this work . Okay. Okay. Evan . Hi there. Could you please speak to the cop fusion surrounding the deployment of the National Guard . We understand that a statement was put out that the department of defense refused to allow the guard to be engaged. Can you im not sure what statement youre referring to, evan. Let many be clear. I requested guard assistance two or three days ago in supporting the d. C. Governments operations, the metropolitan Police Department. And that request was approved by the secretary of the army. Additionally as i understand and ill turn to the secretary to speak to this directly, the United StatesCapitol Police department requested additional guard support today. So let me go to the secretary. Hi. This is ryan mccarthy. When we were working through the additional requests, there was sorry. There was additional requests that came forward. For us to truly understand the specifics, a lot of questions were asked. A little bit of condition fusion. As we work through it, we made the determination about a half hour later to mobilize the entire d. C. National guard. So this has been incredibly fluid. I have to go through the secretary of defense to get the final approval to mobilize personnel as well as to co duct operations in coordination with local authorities. Ali, wamu. The citywide curfew there, that is federal property, right . The curfew applies across the city. We will if your question is are people that are on the Capitol Grounds subject to the curfew, theyre going to be subject to following the lawful orders of police on the ground. And they will be ordered to evacuate the capitol ground. Next question. By whom . By the police. Nick from the a. P. Hi, mayor. Did mpd enter the capitol itself . There was the fbi in there at this point. [inaudible]. We wont discuss the specifics of the deployment. Ly say that the mpd and all of the Law Enforcement partners that will be active will clear the capitol and establish a perimeter in order to do that. What was your second question . We have reports about that theres several mpd officers that are injured. These officers are being tended to and still engaged in the fight to regain control of the capitol. Theyre injured. Theyre still working and working very hard to regain control of the capitol. Bill so that is an Interesting Development there as well for Police Officers inside the Capitol Building. Want to bring ted williams back. We were speaking a moment ago. What do you take away from the posture this city is taking now as you come up on the close of n aggressive position in regards to this matter. The metropolitan Police Department will be the lead agency, and the chief will be in consultant, the chief of police for the metropolitan Police Department. But they have also engaged with the Virginia State police as well as the Maryland State Police. And i think that will be beneficial. One thing they have to do right now, bill, they have got to get the capital clear. So they will send out signals to the capital sagging comic hey, you have a certain amount of time to move over these grounds and if you dont move, we will lock you up. So as a result of that, i hope a lot of people will leave the capitol or they will be locked up and then they will put a curve human plays. That will be very significant. Bill, that may help to quell the crowd and the problems that may very well take place in washington, d. C. , and that have not occurred yet. Speak to chad, that looks like that is what is happening. Did you see your picture, people moving away at the moment . I keep coming back to the question, where have you been . Well, you know, that is a very good question to ask, but i think to be honest with you, bill, Law Enforcement and Capital Police were all caught off guard as a result of what has taken place throughout the day. And that, now, they are trying to move people out and people are moving voluntarily out of the capital. Bill chad, how wellequipped are they . Chad has been taking us through the history of the u. S. Capitol. What do you think of that . You know, the Capitol Police, they are used to handling demonstrations, but none of this magnitude. As a result of that, they will now half to go back to the drawing board and plan for this kind of activity in the future. The one thing that im concerned about, the terrorist are watching this and the thing about it we dont know what if anything could have been planted on capitol hill, so they will have to do a deep scrub of that building once cleared of the building. Speed to ted to you so much. It is good to get your input. You were hoping for the best overnight, right . Just like us. And i dont think it will be the morning hours. What concerns me again is what happens after dark. Bill, youre absolutely right. Right after dark, the dark has a way of camouflaging illegal activity where the groups can attack each other. That is certainly something im sure the Police Department has on their plate and looking into and hoping it will not happen. That curfew that they are putting in place they will help out tremendously. Speed to ted, thank you. If you get information coming back, it is good to get your view. You have so much experience in washington, d. C. , homicide detective. You know the city inside and out and thank you and if you get more information come on back we will put you on the air, okay . Many thanks, ted, we are coming on the 5 00 hour. A reset folks, weve been on there 55 hours and this broke that 1 00. Lets pause and get a reset as we move to the top. The fox news channel, here in atlanta, georgia, where a major senate race was called in the last hour alone. It is 5 00 in washington, d.
