The incumbent republican got support from mike pence. He said the polls are not neck and neck as predicted, he said in a few hours were going to see the governor run away with this election. I dont think this is going to be a very drawnout process. I think this is going to be known pretty quickly. I think youre going to know, frankly, even before polls close in the west because you can expect that the west is going to roll in big for us. The challenger, democrat andbeshear calls bevin unhinged and says he has been too divisive in his first four years. The last four years of matt bevin, hes created an usversusthem every day but as kentuckians we have more in common than would ever divide us. Beshear tried to keep this campaign local. Bevin says since hes the only incumbent republican governor up for election of course this race is a proxy for all Things National politics. Neil. Neil Jonathan Serrie in mississippi where the g. O. P. Is facing a tough fight on what could be and should be a solidly red state, jonathan. Indeed, neil, although mississippi is a solidly red state the race for governor is surprisingly tight. Tate reeves hoping the president and Vice President will push him over the 50 threshold needed to win this case outright. I cant believe this is a competitive race. Its embarrassing. Im talking to mississippi. Former president barack obama recorded an 11thhour robo calls urging the vote for jim hood. In his fourth term as attorney general hes the only democrat to hold statewide office. Jim hood has had a very successful political career because he is this sort of hill country democrat who tries to portray himself i think more as a moderate than he really is. Both candidates are vying to succeed Current Governor phil bryant, a republican who as with all governors in this state is limited to two terms. Neil. Neil Jonathan Serrie, thank you very much. The president thinks these races are important but what do they say about 2020 . We do attach importance maybe just for the seeds that they spread about the possibility or the implications for 2020 but in the case of a couple of these theyre important. Virginia particularly with a potential change republicans are watching and democrats are watching in the state legislature. What do you think . Especially kentucky and mississippi as we heard i think a year out from the big dance what were seeing is that both sides are looking to these two elections as if they are dress rehearsals for 2020 and both reporters before this they hit the nail exactly on the head because what these republicans have tried to do is to nationalize the race by doing their best to put donald trump on the ticket because these are two states that he won handily and theyre hoping that that momentum especially since he has gone to both states and held rallies will send them to victory. Neil we look at states where its about control, the apparatus of government, whether its in new jersey or the delegates in virginia but that matters a great deal. That was something that democrats gained substantially in the last goaround in the mid terms where they picked up six such states. With Republicans Holding 61 of these edges in state government, is there any possibility democrats widen their showing from last go around . They certainly could and whats interesting about these local races for the legislature is its more difficult to make an argument that they are a National Indicator but the consequences are significant because what happens tonight on election day could have consequences Going Forward for decades especially when we consider the implications that come with redistricting and gerrymandering. These are lesser known names but no less important. Neil what im curious about in the case of kentucky, a state i think the president won by more than 30 points, matt bevin is in the race of his life to get reelected, i know its problematic for a republican governor to get reelected there, i was surprised by that but you would think with the wind at his back, the president s numbers, the economy that he wouldnt be having the trouble that he is. What do you think . If bevin does win in kentucky he will be the first republican to win a second term there since the second world war. But youre absolutely right. Whats interesting about matt bevin is hes sort of a proto trump. He was very aggressive with the media. Very aggressive with his opponents. Even before he was a governor. Going back to his challenge of majority leader mitch mcconnell. He tried out a lot of these populist techniques that President Trump later employed to greater success. It didnt exactly work for him at the local level. He has the ignominious reputation as the least popular governor in the country because of a lot of the ways hes handled himself in kentucky and like we reported at real clear politics a month ago what he has been trying to do to save his seat is wed his election to the impeachment inquiry of President Trump. Trying to make this an usversusthem election and hes hoping with trumps visit to the state that could take him to the finish line. Neil Philip Wegmann of real clear politics in washington. The president says if he goes away this goes away. Records for the dow and the nasdaq today when all was said and done. Your 401 k s. How are you doing . Pretty good. If the democrats get in, thats not going down by 50 . Thats going down to nothing. Its going to be worthless. Under republican leadership, the economy is booming. Wages are rising. Confidence is soaring. Neil and you impeach him or dont reelect him it all ends. Wall street journals james freeman, market watchs Rebecca Walter and art, what do you think of that . Weve gone through the clinton impeachment process together. We remember that wall street is not a red or blue entity. They were making money with bill clinton. They wanted him to stay there. They have been making a lot of money with donald trump. They dont want that disrupted either. Yeah. Its interesting. A couple of things that we know are true, neil, you and i have talked about this a lot, president s generally dont talk about the market because they know they have little control over that and it can bite them in the fannie a president that every time there is a new high, you enjoy spending your money and at some point that comes back to haunt you, this is an economy that has underwhelmed necessarily, certainly in 2019 and were back to trend. The trend is good enough for all time highs in the market and good enough for a good Third Quarter earnings reporting season but its not a bragging point and if this administration going to rub on the economy and the market its probably the wrong area to be looking. Neil the president says a lot of that you can kiss goodbye if he goes. Do you buy that . I do. 52 trillion medicare for all which they dont tell you is a 10 year cost. The complete overhaul of onesixth of our economy with medical completely overridden by the government. This president deserves more credit. I disagree with art. We have the highest Median Income in the history of our country, incomes have gone up over 5,000 real dollars, when you add in the tax reform its over 6,000, obama, they went up over 1,000 over eight years. 7 1 2 if you take out the recession. I think this president deserves a lot of credit. Neil im curious, james, whether you want to give this president credit or do the political thing with it, the fact of the matter is this president is fond of mentioning that this is what has been going on under his watch. The markets go higher and higher. How much do you think that resonates on the stump . Obviously people want to hear about jobs and the battleground states they want to make sure that is republicans want to make sure those unemployment rates stay low. Theyre lower than where they were when the president first got elected but they are higher from the levels where they were a little more than a year ago. How does this play out . Nothing resonates like having a job and seeing rising incomes as you mentioned in a lot of the battleground states unemployment rates close to historic lows, a phenomenon in the country new in the trump era of more than a million more open positions, open jobs waiting to be filled than we have hunemployed americans. That has never happened in the few decades of the government keeping these statistics so i think that does resonate. Thats why in polls typically the president does not get a great Approval Rating except on the economy. For that to continue he does need tow resolve this china trade dispute and you see the signal from investors every day. When it looks like were getting some kind of deal the market goes up and when we get bad news on that front it goes down. Neil its interesting, art, you can almost time it exactly the more optimistic investors are about a china deal the more they buy. The less optimistic the less se. Growing indications today that both sides are going to remove tariffs, in this country were going to kick in next month and that had the buyers out. What do you think . I think thats a great question and a great point and i would tell you that if we were able to put the u. S. China trade war in a compartment and say were not going to escalate from here, weve completed phase one, there is not a great deal of uncertainty because its not getting worse, the forced Technology Transfer would be difficult, i think the market would celebrate that, wife seen the more structure we get on the tone the better it does and the opposite was true in the month of may and we saw that for the entire month of august, i agree with you if we can put this in the rear view mirror that helps the administration in the polls in 2020 and i think theyre going to try to choreograph news around that. It makes sense. Neil i dont know whether the impeachment stuff is noise, rebecca but the markets by and large ignore every development. What do you do about it . I mean, you know, this impeach we dont want a whole nother year of this going on and that doesnt help the china situation. If they think they dont have to deal with him theyre going to try to outwait him. Theyve got more of an issue. Their supply chains are leaving en masse, theyve got to deal with this president and i would appreciate the impeachment dying down so that we can get this trade deal. I agree with james and art. Weve got to get the trade deal ironed up and sealed tight. Neil it could be determined in a matter of case. Thank you all very much. To remind you, the dow and the nasdaq hit records in the second in as many days, the naz dag doing that at the end of the day, the s p not so lucky, meanwhile the transcripts of two key witnesses are out. The house impeachment inquiry ramps up after this. Only one things more exciting than getting a lexus. Wow giving one. How did you guys. . Dont ask. Neil House Committee released the testimony of witnesses what they knew about the ukraine phone call and when. Fox newss chad pergram following it closely on capitol hill. Im going to start with a phone call. Not the call between the president of the ukraine and the president of the United States but a call between Gordon Sondland, ambassador to the sondland said i asked him one open ended question. What do you want from ukraine and as i recall he was in a very bad mood. It was a quick conversation. He said i want nothing. I want no quid pro quo. I want zelensky to do the right thing. And said President Trump hung up on him. I direct you to another element. One word we might start to focus on here is the word presumed and this is also from Gordon Sondland in the transcript released this afternoon. I presume the aid suspension had become linked to the proposed anticorruption statement and republicans seize on that word presumed that Gordon Sondland was not really saying there was a potential quid pro quo but it was his interpretation of events and thats when you parse the transcripts its very much subject to interpretation. Democrats are going to say one thing, republican Something Else and the reason, neil, most people wont read the transcripts. They will listen to the news and read the interpretations. Neil if youre convinced the president did something wrong that wont change. If youre convinced as well he did not that wont change. Thats why probably in about a weeks time well start to get some polling on this and this is why who the people are fighting on capitol hill are so important, there has been a lot of chatter the last couple of days about possibly moving jim jordan, Top Republican on the Oversight Committee to the Intelligence Committee, its clear from the resolution passed last week that the Intelligence Committee will have hearings but jim jordan isnt on the committee. Im going to use a sports analogy. In ice hockey you want the best matchup and this is where if youre playing hockey the visiting team puts their players on the ice first and the home team second. They look at who the visitors put out there and they try to get the best matchup. The republicans are trying to get the best matchup. With the select committee on intelligence, select committee is a key, important term here, House Speaker nancy pelosi has the one that has last change. She could veto putting jim jordan on the select committee and this sort of change of player personnel is so rare on capitol hill nobody knows if thats the case but you could see why republicans would want jim jordan fighting for President Trump. Hes been one of the president s most ardent defenders. Neil you got a perfect score on your s. A. T. s. I got five minutes for fighting in hockey, neil, two minutes for instigating. Neil i find that hard to believe. Thank you, my friend. A great job as always. The guy is amazing. With impeachment by House Democrats likely coming how are Senate Republicans preparing . Call the number on your screen call healthmarkets now neil a top diplomat revising his testimony in the impeachment probe to say that u. S. Aid would likely be withheld until ukraine issued some sort of a statement on corruption. Democrats are calling this a clear smoking whatever, a clear quid pro quo but is it . Lets ask Senate Judiciary committee america, republican tom tillis. Its easy to get in the weeds on this senator, good to have you, but is that for the president a smoking gun . Absolutely not. The president is responsible this administration is responsible for sending hundreds of millions of aid to the ukraine. The ukraine government recognizes they have corruption problems and we expected the president to step up and point to a commitment to ending corruption and graft in his administration or across the whole of the ukraine. That doesnt rise to the level that theyre trying to make it. An impeachable offense. Nor did the original transcript or the whistleblower complaint. This is a series of additional shiny objects to try to justify what i think is an insufficient basis for moving forward with impeachment. Neil not everyone is on the same page with this, senator, the dribs and drabs of testimony weve gotten from other players there seems an insinuation that aid was delayed to ukraine until this issue was resolved, some colleagues have said it doesnt matter even if it was in the extreme case delayed and even if that is a quid pro quo it is not an impeachable offense. Do you agree . I tend to agree with it. I go back, neil, to the problem i had in the beginning, that nancy pelosi before she read the original transcript decided to go with impeachment proceedings, they voted last weekend, two democrats voted with republicans saying they shouldnt move forward, they look like as they have for the past three years looking for a way to negate the election of 2016. Theyll have a chance to have the Voters Decide the next president in 2020. I dont see based on whats transpired to this point with their antics of impeachment that its going to rise to the level of an impeachable offense. Neil this is a moving target but it seems to be a target thats getting moved back. Steny hoyer, the number two democrat in the house said he hoped to have this resolved in the house by credit time, six or seven weeks away, senator, that doesnt look likely. What are you hearing . I think well probably come up with some agreement to convene right after the first part of the year if they send it to us in the christmas time frame or maybe the week after christmas and then welbe on it, well have the president s defense counsel there. Well have the floor managers. Well hear the testimony. Im sure that the president and others may offer up motions. We on the other hand are jurors, we have to sit there and be quiet. Well be listening to the testimony and probably getting on it some time in early january. Neil thats right by the caucuses and the primaries and the president ial contest heating up. How do you think thats going to go . I think that anybody who is in a democratic primary or republican primary for that matter if they have a job in the u. S. Senate they should be seated in the chamber listening to the testimony and being thoughtful about what theyre doing. I think most will. You cant pound the table for impeachment when youre a potential juror who have been here listening to am it. I do think its not something listening to diagram. It could be three or four weeks at listening to testimony. It could be three or four weeks. I think its disposed of in january. Neil your colleague john kennedy of louisiana has said this is an orchestrated part on the part of democrats to make it difficult for the six democrats running for point if it gets to be an impeachment trial and the beneficiary of that is joe what do you think of that . Im not going to go down that path. I think that the fact that neil i thought i would get you at a weak moment. John kennedy never ceases to make me smile, but the fact of the matter is they have been trying tow impeach the last three years. Neil that would be potentially the result of that. That the former Vice President would benefit. You could argue mayor buttigieg as well, the request for a moderate nominee, thats the way they get it . I guess thats the Washington School of conspiracies and gaming out. What i would say to the Vice President , Vice President biden, he should be paying attention to the travesty thats going on capitol hill not taking advantage of that situation and i suspect the democrat candidates for president to be in the chamber will make note of it if theyre not. Neil we talk about the Economic News and market news yet so far a lot of the polling, senator, you could think that the president would be benefitting more than he is, in battleground states hes doing better than he was but hes still got a heck of a battle against all the other candidates and fears that unemployment rates in some of those states are backing up a tad. Not like they were when he got into office. Are you worried in those states its in those states its crucial, your own included that thats going to be important . I think it will be but i think the question people will get asked next year after we get through primaries is are you better off now than you were four years ago, we get the usmca passed, nancy pelosi owes the american people, we get the japanese trade agreement passed, the first phase, several phases of trade agreements china passed well see an economic bump and jobs on the sidelines now even though we have strong employment numbers are going to be a positive message going into the general election next year. Neil what about the stock market . I think the stock market has the potential for continuing to go up. If we get trade moving on a level Playing Field with china and we get the usmca in place and ratified i think youre going to see capital on the sidelines now get into the market and continuing deregulation, continuing to give certainty in the Regulatory Environment are all things that could stimulate a positive economic message for us going into next year. Neil thank you very much. Thanks, neil. Take care. Neil senator tillis. The white house on the release of some of these transcripts. After this. Woman 1 oc this is my body of proof. Neil the white house continues to play down the impeachment probe, transcripts and the meaning of what was released, much ado about nothing . They are saying something. John roberts at the white house with more. What theyre focusing in on, neil, the revised testimony that ambassador to the e. U. Gordon sondland gave. Telling a couple of people, bill taylor, and the former russia expert that it looked like there was a quid pro quo between ukraine aid and the ukraine launching an investigation into corruption including burisma but sondland also says in this revised statement i quote presumed that the aid suspension had become connected, he doesnt say know he says presumed. Kurt volker told investigators he saw no quid pro quo. Volker said you asked what conversations did i have about the quid pro quo, i didnt know so the white house has taken these two specific things and putow a statement about them saying both transcripts released today show there is even less evidence for this impeachment scam than previously thought. Ambassador sondland does not know when, how or by whom the aid was suspended, he said he presumed there was a link to the aid. By contrast volkers testimony confirms there could not have been a quid pro quo because the ukrainians did not been military aid hold at the time. The white house is saying that these two witnesses are beneficial to them. Also the white house is going to come out in a little while with a statement about the invitation for Nick Mulvaney to talk about the impeachment articles against the president , the white house thinking about putting out a statement saying hes not going to show but something more colorful than that may come down the line, neil, i think the white house wants tow stand its ground and show the flag of this idea of executive privilege before the congress. Neil. Neil it sounds like what weve seen r dwo what weve gotten, is it really moving the needle either way . I dont know. I think what probably happened, if you look at the original sondland transcript is full of a lot of i dont know and i cant recall and the democrats who put together that compilation of excerpts were very specific to put all of that in and i think sondland thought maybe theyre laying a trap for me so he went back in and said after talking to a couple of people, i do recall now telling Ambassador William Taylor and tim morrison and the ukrainians that i think that aid was conditioned on the idea of a corruption investigation so now he has squared himself with congress and he squares himself with the white house by specifically using that one word. I presumed. Hes got something for everybody just in this revised testimony. Neil. Neil john roberts at the white house. Thank you very much, my friend. This tragic news south of the border. We dont need your help, u. S. A. After nine americans are ambushed and killed by a drug cartel near sonora, mexico. Three women. Six children. All dead. Arkansas republican senator tom cotton on these fastmoving developments. Senator, mexico president sayingen though the president has offered u. S. Security forces to help out and get on top of this and the cartel that was behind it, they say no. Neil, unfortunately its plain that the Mexican Government cant handle this. President Lopez Obrador came into office saying the strategy would be more hugs than bullets. They work in a childrens fairy tale but in the real world when three american women and six children were gunned down and burned alive the only thing that can counteract bullets is more and bigger bullets. If the Mexican Government cannot protect american citizens in mexico the u. S. May have to take matters into our own hands. Neil whats incredible about this is that americans are normally not targeted by drug cartels for fear of the hell of response they could be looking at now and that because these women and children were traveling in three s. U. V. s that they looked to this cartel like a competing cartel. Have you heard anything like that . Its unclear what caused the attack, neil, but by some accounts of the surviving children one of the women left her vehicle to try to indicate to the shooters it was only women and children traveling but in the end it doesnt matter, neil. You cant train a pit bull you cant let a pit bull loose in your yard off the leash and when it attacks you say its a case of mistaken identity. Thats why the United States may have to take matters into our own hands if president Lopez Obrador cant protect american citizens inside mexico. Neil crime has dramatically escalated there. Not just mexico city, what have you where it is a real concern. Its not all cartel related. It is just getting to be a powder keg. How do we even deal with that . Unfortunately, neil, murders have reached a new high in mexico over the last year. When you come into office promising hugs not bullets to counteract criminals its the same thing when you try to appease aggressive dictators or terrorists. They take it as a sign of weakness and they prey on the innocent. Neil if we cant identify the cartel involved how do we on foreign soil find out who did . First, neil, these cartels have already been designated transnational criminal organization. Coming has to look at our laws and impose harsher punishment on criminal organizations similar to what we do on terrorist organizations like al qaeda or the islamic state. If the Mexican Government cant protect americans inside mexico we may have to take matters into our own hands. We showed we can do it in syria, we showed we can could do it in pakistan. We can certainly defend american citizens inside mexico if mexico is not willing or able to do so. Neil the local pression there today on the online, senator, talked about how its panicking local residents. Mexicans who are fearful for their lives and ironically looking more to escape to the United States and could even complicate that. Thats a genuine problem, neil. Unfortunately, in an attack like this that happened only 50 miles away from the border of mexico and arizona its a reminder of just how important it is to secure our border. We want to work with the government of mexico. Not just to protect our border but help them get control of the cartels that are making life inside mexico a living hell for their citizens and for ours but in the meantime we have to protect our citizens if the Mexican Government cannot. Neil so tragic. So unnecessary. Senator cotton. Thank you for taking the time. Thank you, neil. Neil forget shouting death to america. Neil from chanting death to america to the scary thought of iran trying to make it a reality, the country will start enriching uranium again at an underground plant tomorrow, were told breaking part of the 2015 nuclear deal moving closer to potentially a nuclear bomb. How risky is this . Rebecca heinrichs is very worried. What do you think is going on here . Iran has two choices before it in order to get sanctions relief which is what it wants. Gearing these threats toward the europeans because they believe the europeans will break easier than the United States, they are threatening to do more work at the site theyre not allowed to be enriching uranium under the deal that the Obama Administration negotiated at this site but the Obama Administration fields never acquired conversion of that nuclear site into a purely civil site. It was a military site. So everything that was there before the deal is still there. So now, the iranians are threatening to begin work again at that site. The other option is to get the sanctions relief lifted is to behave like a normal country. Stop terrorism. Thats not the take that the olympians are staying with. Neil while technically not violating what they had told the president even though others argue theyre certainly tempting fate, they get more and more provocative in the hopes that that will bring the u. S. The toible table. I would imagine the opposite. The same with iran. But its a weird strategy. This is particularly strange not strange behavior but bad for the iranians because theyre humiliating the Trump Administration in a way. The Trump Administration authorized Civil Nuclear waivers to allow civil, nonmilitary, nuclear work to continue with the iranians in the hopes of having some leverage with the iranians to try to negotiate a bettered deal, to keep an eye on some of what goes on at those sites but days after the waivers were issued the iranians make this announcement that theyre going to now escalate. Provocative behavior at those sites. It is embarrassing for the Trump Administrations approach which is supposed to be a maximum Pressure Campaign towards the iranians to try to compel them to change their behavior. Neil all of this of course as we looked back at the 40th anniversary of the seizing of american hostages in tehran during the Carter Administration and im seeing the same video now of death to america, burn the American Flag its that great 1970s show. All over. I will say, neil, sometimes americans get impatient toward fix the problem, get this regime under control and sometimes its just a long slog. Under the Trump Administration at least now that the deal has mostly been done away with, were no longer enabling the iranians with all of these funds and sanctions relief to find their proxies, the terrorist group they have been funding across the region. Now the Iranian Military has continued to cut a lot of their resources because of the pressure that the United States government has placed upon them. Sometimes it takes a long time to compel and squeeze a regime like iran. Weve moved a lot of military assets back into the region during the Trump Administration to deter them especially after the attack against the saudi oil fields, so youve got to buckle in and take a while sometimes to pressure a change in behavior. Are the free markets taking care of what the left says the United States government should . Not so fast. The hike is need. But carrie lucas said let private Companies Like bank of america do just that. You are looking at this and saying not enough . Absolutely. Its a beautiful thing that bank ever america wants to pay its workers a better wage and share greater earnings in the form of higher income and hopefully benefits. We need more employers to step up. Neil not every employer can be bank of america . Many employers are reporting historic earnings. We need the government to push people to say in the United States of america if you work hard for 40 hours a week you should be able to take care of your family and too many families cant do that. Neil thats a good point. Lets say a small, medium sized business owner, not everyone is a fortune 500 company. Absolutely. You need to have opportunities for teenagers and longterm unemployment and people coming out of prison. Companies wont take a chance on someone like that at 20 an hour. The idea of 20 an hour for everyone will knock people out of the work force entirely. The idea that its unheard of to pay a worker to take care of their family when workers cant afford a 400 bill. Neil bank of america wants to make this policy. It will respond to Market Forces as necessary. We will see what the fallout will be. We have 2 more records today. The dow and the nasdaq.
