Maria. Good afternoon to. President trump had a lot to talk about today. We were in the oval office talking about a number of different topics. First and foremost was where we are with the economy and where we are headed. You know, there is an old saying that if you talk about recession enough, you can talk your way into one. So the president didnt want to talk about the recession. He wanted to talk about things that he believes that he might be able to do. And specifically, things that the fed could do to stop us from going into one. Well see what he said. President trump i think the word reception is a word thats inappropriate, because its a word that certain people. Im going to be kind. Certain people and the media are trying to build up. They would love to see a recession. We are very far from a recession. In fact, if the fed would do its job, i think we would have a tremendous spurt of growth. It is psychologically, very important. Less so, but very psychologically important. If the fed would do its job, which it has done very poorly over the last year and a half, you would see a burst of growth but you have never seen before. That would be lowering Interest Rates. Before the president very critical of jerome powell. Believing that they overshot the mark last year. Joe too quickly, too fast. He does not like the program of quantitative tightening. The president is calling for a cut in the fed. 100 basis points. That would be a full percentage rate. It would take it to the area of about 1 . The president said, not all at once. He would like to see some quantitative easing, as well, which we saw in the obama administration. Another thing the president is thinking about his index and capital gains. Its very popular among a lot of people who are very happy dominic wealthy, who have a lot of investments in the market. Part of the economic stimulus. The obama administration. That is a tax cut that really affects the middle class, because you cap at about 95,000. People who make more than that dont get the tax cut. Which is squarely in the middle class. This is what the president said about that. President trump i have been thinking about payroll taxes for a long time. Whether we do it now or not, its not being done because of recession. We are at legitimately if we had a cut in Interest Rates by the fed, if they would do their job properly, and if they would do a meaningful cuts, you would see growth like you would never have before in this country. John even though the president was talking about tax cuts, he was talking about the fed printing more money. China is also a bleak piece of this. The president said today that he has not yet ready to cut a deal with china. He said, whether or not there is shortterm pain, because he has negotiation with china, is irrelevant. He said, we might need some shortterm pain, because long term, if we dont do something about china, its going to be catastrophic, because they will eat our lunch 510 years for now. Maria . See for a while, it looks like the president is hoping we can go out there. Rate cuts and quantitative easing. He wants to put a fiscal stimulus onto that. It really doesnt seem like a perfect goldilocks scenario. I dont think dominic how willing jay powell and his peerl be for that. When the economy was in much more than a recession. Maria scott, how do you seated . I remember that fall very well. I got married that fall. It was a very bad fall, because the fed was cutting raids faster than we could even see them being cut. We went into a major financial crisis. Thats what, i think worries me, with the fat on the other side now. As the president pointed out, they raised too fast. I think they have been to hawkish. She said, well, this is a midcycle adjustment. Dont get used to this. We are not going to be this nice. It certainly boggles my mind. The fed funds over nine target rates at two and a quarter percent. That tells you its too high. Maria look at the 10year, where that is. Its just extraordinary, what we are looking at here. Your reaction. Do you want to see a cut . I want to see a cuts, and ill tell you what. Bond traders already think that we are going to see cuts before the end of the year. The president is not that far off. Number two, i think this is going to be something that is going to help farmers. I mean, im in new mexico. You go down to southern new mexico, and you see land. They could use it. Youve also got to look at local regional banks. They need this right now. What people dont understand, maria is that we have with china, intertwined trade and National Security issues. Weve got to deal with this chinese thing. The president says this will push the economy into a recession to deal with that. Money talks with china. We are going to have to have a guns and butter approach. We are going to have to juice this for the next 12 months so that tom can get this issues with china sorted out. Scott all those things seem dominic they want to agree on. Maria yeah, thats the thing. Lets not forget that china has broken its promise of so many times and in so many different situations, whether its the wto or breaking promises with hong kong. 2 Million People in the street, as we spoke. They are simply not a trustworthy negotiating partner. I think there is every reason to question the integrity of chinas intentions. What im not sure about is whether or not tariffs are the correct instrument and timor. I think President Trump has seen that. He pulled back on those tariffs for that very reason. Now hes looking for a different reason to go about providing relief for this economy so that his administration can get through these very tough negotiations. Just be one of the economy looks good, but at the end of the day, we are seeing a bit of a slow down. We know that europe is having a hard time generating any growth. I dont know about considerably dominic considerably. You asked the housing market. The housing prices, from my eye, and certain areas that had been good have slowed down. Buyer sentiment has cooled off. Consumer sentiment, recently fell off some highs. I think that slow down is eminent. But yes. I saw a study of the other of economists, whose opinion was split about whether there would be a recession or not to before. All speculation. Was interesting, the president today said that he was not contemplating a cut in the payroll taxes. Yet, since monday, this is been a storm of attention. The administration is so worried about it, they are considering a payroll tax cut. The first time we heard it addressed by somebody in the administration, was the president. Always thinking about tax cuts, but we are not thinking about that tax cut right now. Maria okay, so what about that. You are saying that this is all speculation, that theres no tax cuts coming. Because that would create more worries over the debt. Carl absolutely. With a democrat house bent upon impeaching the president , lets not kid ourselves. He is in favor of impeachment. Jerry nadler declaring, we dont care whether weve got a resolution on our impeachment investigation. We have one going on right now. Who thinks that a proposal to cut taxes from the administration would get a fair hearing or any hearing whatsoever . Better for the president to think about the things that he can do to help strengthen peoples confidence in the economy and administrative actions he could take that would add to our prosperity . It would be in a mistake. In order for us to keep the economy growing, ive got to ask the house representatives to do x. They aint doing x. Maria this is where it moves into politics. The subject of on appointment is not a good subject for the democratic candidates, because we are at a 51 year low. We are looking at better than 2 growth and in the first quarter. Carl and wages. Yet, under the last two years of the obama administration, wages were rising more than the working people underneath them. I think it was about 75 more. In the last two years, the wages for working people have been rising 35 higher than those for their supervisors. Working people finally get an increase in their salaries, their wages. People feel that in their pockets. Thats why, i love all this gloom and doom. People say, oh, the economy is slowing up. And then, weve got the july consumer numbers. What did they say . Thought consumers have confidence in the economy. Same with small businesses. So yeah, you can talk yourself into a recession. You can claim, yeah, we are there, and find yourself there. But until the American People begin to think that they have to somehow shut things down, it aint going to happen. But was interesting to me was in july, not only were consumers spending, but they were saving. They were saying, i want to spend a little bit more to make my families life better. But they also side, we are going to save a little bit more in order to make our familys life better over the long haul. Its the one youre right. I think is the level of Interest Rate that has everyone unnerved, because they are so low. What do you want to see the present focus on going into 2020. He is a business president , First Business president. Do you think he was should be focused on Economic Issues . Carl yes. I think he ought to. If the economy is with you, lets be honest, it doesnt help you as much as it hurts you when the economy is going against you. But its something where his job has consistently been an eight, ten, 11, 12 points ahead. Remember, all the smart people running for president as a democrat said that if we have deregulation, have a business man in charge, if we cut taxes, the economy is going to fall into a deep depression. That didnt happen. All of those forecast of how bad it was going to be if we did what donald trump said. So now, donald trump is able to say, look at what has happened under my watch and look at all these ideas on the other side. Look at what they are attempting to do. The important part is that they had to have one other thing. Heres what ive done, heres what the other side wants to do. It puts his approach at odds with the candidate right behind him, Bernie Sanders, who almost never breaks from a script. He takes a break to play softball and show the softer side of Bernie Sanders at the field of dreams. Obviously, this campaign is very different from the last time. No one is going to get 50 . Before she had 12,000 people come out to see her, which is certainly the biggest of her campaign, and i was just in South Carolina this weekend, and she had about almost a thousand people at her events, while Bernie Sanders had about a third of that the next day in South Carolina. So, she is certainly surging, but one thing about joe biden that is interesting is that he really hasnt followed the pattern of some of these other candidates, where they had peaks of key events like debates or televised town halls. He has sort of had lackluster support, at least in front of those small grassroots donors, which could be troubling. The debates will certainly narrow down the field. We will probably have ten or 11 candidates in september. There could be a few more in october. As the debates start to whittle down the field, a lot of the lower tier candidates will start to fall off. Especially, after iowa, i think a lot of candidates seem to be may be trying to hang on and see how they do. They are waiting to see what happens then. Maria robert, how do you see it . Maria i remember when microsoft was the target because it was so big. Also, a similar situation in terms of its competitive reach. Heavy fines. A lot of backlash. Investors reacted. Is that what you are expecting here . How significant will this be for this companys . Its going to be significant. But in general, the scale of whats changing is significant. Some people called it astounding and influential. Some people call that a drop in the bucket, because compared to the proceeds and everything else, its a very minimal percentage. Its really a slap on the wrist. So, how we go about kind of handling these antitrust issues, there are lots of different ways they could occur, but it definitely will have some sort of fiscal effect. Maria i wonder if in addition to antitrust, you also have the conversation of conservative as getting censored, and whether or not thats part of the upset on the part of regulators in washington . Certainly, the president has talked about this. You touch on a very important point. For so many of these giants, we cant see the inner goings of google and how they rank these results. But, for amazon, its selling platform, they are also selling their own goods. There are all these different ways to look at it, but google will definitely have to deal with the bias problem as a separate issue. Part of it really boils down to too much regulation and too much government in terms of the kind of housing that needs to be built, because there are so much restriction and so much regulation, dumb like that its impossible, particularly in places like silicone valley building condominiums and apartment buildings instead of these singlefamily dwellings that people cant afford to buy anymore. If you work a retail job and you get fired, you are really one paycheck away from this type of homelessness. We want so it goes back to policy, and yet, policymakers are blaming business. A free market would allow places to be built for the people who need it. The supply is constricted. Who benefits from that . Thats very unfair to the most vulnerable, who are potentially allowed to live on the street and all sorts of human waste. Youve got rats, you got violence, youve got sexual abuse. When we were in downtown l. A. , we saw one patrol car with two police officers. Maria so the police are not patrolling as much . A problem. And, typhus. They are asking for transfers. What should be done . Its interesting, because unfortunately, in these ultraliberal cities, police are the devil. Please have really been ostracized and marginalized. And so, they are really held back by a lot of these mirrors. You see it with the antifa protests. When women are being assaulted in tents in the middle of the night when there isnt a police presence, its a phenomenal risk thats almost hard to put your head around. Does that mean we need more police . No, but it means these mirrors have to come up with some solutions other than throwing a few hundred dollars at people every month and calling it good, because its not good. Places like San Francisco have become a magnet for homeless people. Maria immigration or illegal immigration part of this as well. I know that they cities are talking about the president as if hes doing the wrong thing, and they are attacking him instead of looking at their own cities and saying, look. What we need to do to fix this . Its part of it, but its not the driver. Money is not the answer. Just throwing more and more money and creating more and more layers of bureaucracy doesnt cut it. And then come you have these problems that foster for so long, that they become a part of the landscape that just doesnt go away. So what are people doing .
