This is really something. Im going to be in congress meanwhile here in West Virginia, a trio of top tier candidates are battling for a spot against senator joe manchin. One of them, the attorney general Patrick Morrisy is trying to tie jenkins to democrat because he used to be a registered democrat. Jenkins is a liberal fraud. Evan jenkins spent 20 years as a career liberal democrat supporting nancy pelosi, john kerry, rallying for hillary clinton. As that information gets out, people know hes not reliable to work with President Trump. Jenkins returned fire by pointing out that attorney gener general morrisy ran for congress in new jersey. They think thats why hes sometimes aggressive in debates. I called him out in a fun way at the debate last night because he was this pushy, jersey values approach. You know, hes jersey through and through but his own admission. Rounding out the top tier, don blankenship. The former coal baron wore a hat for a republicans campaign that was not invited. Blankenship is best known in West Virginia as being a former coal baron that recently served a year in jail on a misdemeanor conviction that killed 29 people in a cave collapse. Hes spending a Million Dollars on this race and really disrupting things. Neil thanks, peter. Were going to put this in perspective here. The win by the republican candidate was five points in a district that the president won by 20 points. However, the president is pleased never the lease and republicans are seizing on this as a development that interrupts a trend that democrats have been seizing on to say. Theyre in a big heap of trouble. Might be, but this race seems to fly in the face of that. Lets get the read on all of this with the conservative millennial blogger. We have Michael Starr hopkins, a democratic strategist. Gabby, we begin with you and your talk on the size of this win. A win is a win. Democrats are quick to say yeah, but the president won this by double digits, 20 points. But it did disrupt what was a trend of disappointing showings on the part of a number of republicans. Is that enough to stave off a november fall of the house . You know, this is an isolated race in arizona last night. I talked to a white house source earlier this morning to ask them whether they felt reassured seeing the gop victory. To be honest, they were candidate. This is a district that trump won by 20 points. Its a district that more than 1 million was spent by gop outside groups. The district where democrats werent really involved because they didnt think they could win it. All of those factors combined, it doesnt leaving republicans reassured. Neil you can look at the recent races, the one in pennsylvania where conor lamb wins, in alabama where doug jones beat back roy moore, a host of other races. The latest trend shows depending on surveys, that more americans are inclined to at least consider the prospect of republicans maintaining control of congress when it looked like democrats would win by double digits, now thats down to mid single digits. What do you think is going on . I think its important to look at what these democrats are running on that are winning or coming close to winning. Theyre running as moderates that are also running as antiestablishment. Theyre separating themselves from the leadership. We saw that with conor lamb that openly went against nancy pelosi. We saw that in arizona. She was very soft on issues like the Second Amendment and immigration. She knew she was running in a very pro trump area. I dont think the democrats can see this as a success for their agenda. Its success for the idea that we want people to get stuff done. Were tired of the swamp, whether its democrats or republicans. We want people that will brush up against that. So for the democrats that are winning, i dont think its success for their party, which is largely to the left. Its more success for just the idea that we want some things accomplished and to change some things. Neil michael, your democratic strategist and a jersey guy. So when you hear republicans disparaging a democrat for being too jersey, you might have been a mixed emotion there. Yeah. Come on, we dont need that stuff. But lets look at last night. What we see now the dccc has doubled the fundraising for their republican counter parts and starting to look like 2006 where democrats lad a wave election than 2016. Neil you think some democrats are getting ahead on them 70s and already grabbing victory and its a long way here . Yeah, no democrat should be declaring victory yet. The tide is in our fortune. I think what were seeing now is what the political reports said today. If democrats overperform by 4 , theyll take the house and could take the senate. If you look at all the special elections that have been held since President Trump got elected, democrats have overperformed by double digits in every single one. Neil gabby, when i look at the numbers and republicans breathing a sigh of relief when they win a district and a former seat held by a trump cabinet member, the same district in the past they won, theyre relieved. They understand that. A win is a win. But are you worried these races that shouldnt be close remain close . Yeah. In a lot of these states that the president carried, there were sort of a sense of optimism going into 2018 that republicans were going to do well, they could rely on benefits of the tax bill. So far we havent seen that trend play out. In pennsylvania with conor lamb and rick, it was differently. And last night remember, he was interesting, the democratic candidate, in not divorcing buddhist answer thing himself from nancy pelosi and the crumbs comment. Sounding almost republican, but what did you make of that . Its going to be challenging for a lot of republicans in these vulnerable areas, if theyre up against Democratic Candidates that try to emulate that. In some instances were not seeing that. That is probably a source of its a flaw of the Democratic Party heading into 2018, that they are so far to the left as allie mentioned earlier. In some of these areas in West Virginia, arizona, illinois, the parts of the midwest where you do have republicans up against Democratic Congressional candidates, if they choose to distance themselves from current Democratic Party leadership, i think it will benefit them with a lot of trump Republican Voters who may switch and back democrats. Neil in the end, its the president on the ballot even though his name isnt on ballot . I think he is. But the advantage that democrats have because donald trump is such a polarizing figure or he can be polarizing figure, that so many of them are running as republicans without having the p. R. Problem in some cases of donald trump. So theyre running on a lot of the issues that the working class cares about that republicans say they care about but they dont have to worry about some of the things that donald trump has done that is unpopular. The problem is, however, while that might succeed in the primaries or while theyre running, these people are not true moderates. Conor lamb is not a true moderate. They will rule as far left, corey booker, Bernie Sanders democrats. So people come on conor lamb . Neil michael, you disagree . Yeah. Conor lamb is a lot of things but not far left. An interesting dilemma for the midterms, whether or not they embrace the run or run away from him. His base will want neil the democrats, whether they embrace the democratic leadership. Absolutely. Neil i know in this arizona race, the winning republican kept pounding nancy pelosi. Its easier to run away from pelosi than the president. The president is the figure head of the party. Nancy pelosi isnt. Neil you could have say the same thing about barack obama in midterm elections that seeded republican votes even though he would later win on his own. When hes on the ballot, its quite idea. Well see. Its going to be interesting. Neil thanks for selling it in our coverage. Great job. It will be an interesting election too. Thank you all very much. Meantime, we came back with stocks today a little bit even though Interest Rates rey main high. A tenyear treasury note close ago above 3 . A lot of people make a big deal of that. Heres why. With a yield like that and the s p 500 having a yield of about 2 , it doesnt take an einstein to figure out that a lot of people will mark their money in the relative security of treasuries where at least you get the guaranteed backing of uncle sam. Thats the rule of thumb. And boeing coming in with big earnings as the earnings parade continues. Theyre still very strong. So were on top of all of that. Now when we come back, what is french for i did an about face . Did you see this with the french president . He was saying one thing to the president of the United States yesterday and quite another to congress today. What is french for what did you say . See thats funny, i thought you traded options. In fact, ill get that piece of dandruff we have to make him perfect. Thank you, thank you. I like him a lot. Neil all right. So what is french for bromance . Turns out bromance. What are the odds . No, i have no idea. Welcome back. A lot of people are saying, this odd relationship and the one that youd least expect would grow into the buddy system that it has is surprising the world. These two are pleased with it. Im talking about the french president , the american president. Nobody would have foresaw the position theyre in. There is a little confusion between what the french president was telling the president yesterday and what he told congress today. The man at best events, Louisiana Republican senator, john kennedy who joins us from washington. Senator, what do you make of this special and unique relationship but more to the point, the slight different tone the french president took addressing congress . I spent about five hours with macron last night. I listened to the speech, i followed his career. Hes a charming guy. A good politician. It seems that hes very much like trump and obama. Like President Trump, he ran against the system. Started with nothing. Established his own movement, his own party. Hes very cerebral guy like president obama. He tries to be farsighted. Let me tell you my concern. Im delighted to have france and the people of france as an ally. I thank them so much for helping us in syria. But i wonder if president macron is a little bit naive. I think he thinks that we can reason with the ayatollah in iran and kim jongun in north korea and president putin in russia. I hope hes right and certainly you should talk and try diplomacy. But theres some folks that understand strength. And i think in dealing with putin and the ayatollah and kim jongun from weakness is like trying to hand feed a shark. I think president putin, for example, understands one thing. You have to hit him in the face. He understands the sanctions. I think kim jongun does, too. He saw what happened in syria. I not saying you dont try to reason with your adversaries. But as president macron wants us to, but theres some bad people in the world. Theyre not sick, theyre not confused. Its not a question that momma or daddy didnt love them enough. Theyre bad people. Neil im wondering the messages that the french president might have said with the joint conference and taking questions from reporters afterwards. He lowkeyed any stark differences on junking the iran deal. To congress he more or less said nix it, youll regret it. Lets work with what we got. He said the same thing about the paris climate accord. Dont leave it. Fix it. Make it better. He did not pound that theme with the president. What do you make of that . Well, i dont know. Im not being critical. Hes a good politician. Hes trying to be americas friend and trying to get neil i just noticed there he got a lot of standing from democrats on those items. He did. He said many things i agree with. But we live in a real world, neil. I just worry that were not where we are and were not there yet, but with kim jongun because we went to him and said pretty please with sugar on stop stop building a nuclear weapon. Hes scared. Putin respects us. Assad respects. The ayatollah is moving in to syria with the revolutionary guard not because he cares about the people of syria or assad. He wants to establish a beachhead in syria with hezbollah so they can screw with israel and control the middle east. Hes not going to understand sitting down and lets break bread and reason together. Neil you can argue whether you like President Trump or not, whatever hes doing is yielding different results. They might fail as the president said, but he is getting china to make concessions verbally on key areas because of this tariff stuff. Well see how it sorts out. Hes meeting with the north korean leader. I think that has surprised people like macron and maybe europe in general, especially when Angela Merkel comes later this week. What do you think . I think youre on to something, neil. I have to be careful how i say this. Under president obama, who was a really bright guy. I didnt agree with a lot of his politics but we got to the point internationally where i friends didnt trust us. They were confused. Enemies didnt respect us. With President Trump and i mean this affectionately, they look at him and see what he did in syria and in terms of trade and they go, hes a little bit crazy. You know . Neil crazy in a good way. In a great way. And hes tough. This guy means business. I think that is helping us. I dont think kim jongun is coming to the table because we asked him pretty please. Neil do you like french food . I did. Mrs. Trump did an excellent job. Neil thats what i heard. Thanks, senator kennedy. As the good senator was speaking, we got numbers in from facebook and the stock is up 2. 5 . Heres why. Monthly active users averaging 2. 2 billion worldwide matched estimates despite concerns they might be losing some. Earnings were 1. 69 a share. That beats the estimates of 1. 35. Interest rates are rising but traders werent freaking. They hold their own. Stocks ended up. Interest rates backed up more. The tenyear note resting comfortly over 3 level. Many people would say, thats it, doesnt look good for stocks. Im going to put my money in the safety of the treasury note or bond because uncle sam will back me up. I cant say the same about the corner of wall and broad. We have our panel here. Melissa, the view was a backup in Interest Rates is bad for stocks. Im being the old fogey remembering a 10 around 1987. Youre right. The bigger picture, its not a crisis. The fact is the markets have been rallying for awhile. Now weve seen selling. The market isnt going to go higher. Neil what happened today . A little any little bit from the low. We had big selling in the morning, big selling yet. All of these things that have been having earnings like facebook, it fell. Visa is up, too. Not up enough. We had good earnings in the bank. Neil so what are you doing . We dont see new highs in the market until maybe the fall, the end of the year. Neil really . Are you in . Im optimistic. I think the market has plenty of room. The interest on the tenyear treasury, i dont any its that big of a deal. Neil why dont you think its a big deal . Because i dont think its going to be a trend that youll have that much of an impact on on Interest Rates. Im concerned how this will affect borrowing. I dont see it, neil. Neil you could make the argument here, the backup in rates is because of an improving economy. Absolutely. Thats whats been carrying this rally. People have been feeling better about the economy. Weve seen the rates hit passed 3 and retreat back. Neil what do you think its going to do for shoppers . Are they going to tighten up . Yeah. If we see a continuing trend upwards, people will get a little bit concerned with the inflation rate. In the fourth quarter, people will retreat when it comes to Consumer Spending. Look at the same store sales and retail earning, theyre positive. The consumer feels good. I dont think an upward trend of an Interest Rate will have that much of an impact. Neil i tend to look at it as good news. I know we look at good news being bad news. But market rallies have always been sustained in the midst of rising rates. Can they not not necessarily one goes with the other. Yes, a strong economy. Thats why theres rates toing up. Longterm its great. But right now people have a lot of credit card debt. Well see an increase in rates, two or three more times this year and in the insecurity debt, that means payments will go up. Now they just had the tax payment. That will go up and people have about 15,000, the average and thats coming down right now. People are paying it down. I didnt read that. I dont know where the sources are. Hithas facts are impeccable. What do you think the fear that the short term rates, you can argue flattening yield curve and i dont want to bore people. I save that for my show. That it important tends something will slow down down the road. I think what you could see happen here is with the housing market. Depending how the treasuries impact Mortgage Rates. Mortgage rates trail behind the treasuries, but they will inch up. Thats why i said before, if this is the beginning to a trend of a rising Interest Rate, now we can see the rates go up. Now what happens with peoples monthly mortgage payments when theyre looking at i can only afford so much. Neil isnt that a wash with the tax cuts . There will be some benefits, but thats not a dollar for dollar offset. Were talking about a domino effect. Again, if those Mortgage Rates go up, people have to start shifting their income around. How are they going to pay for certain things like if their credit card Interest Rates go up. Where are they going to put money aside for tuition for school, et cetera. Neil were complaining about stuff that should be good. Its the feds job to find a sweet spot. Theyre doing fine. Right. Neil year miss negative. Im not miss negative but my outlook for the year for 2018 has changed. Neil just because of the basis of this uptick . No. Because weve seen so much selling. Neil what do you think . I dont see it that way. I have to beg to deliver with melis melissa. Im an optimist. I think well see room in the market. Lets not panic, this is no big deal. And from a Consumer Spending standpoint, i feel good about the economy. I think well be okay. I do, too. Im positive. Im saying right now, im talking about the next three to four month of summer. I dont think the market makes new highs. Neil i dont know what were going to have for breakfast tomorrow. All right. Thank you all very, very much. I told you they were geniuses. Jeff sessions was on capitol hill. He was asked questions like why didnt you recuse yourself in the cohen case . And about sticking around in the white house if Rod Rosenstein is fired. The president typing back very cool. Were on it in 60 seconds. Neil all right. Were getting new details emerging about the professor. Remember him . He leaked a former fbi james comeys memos and his relationship with the fbi. Apparently it was more involved than we were led to believe. Catherine herridge has more. What did you find out . In an email to fox news, Daniel Richman said he was a special Government Employee known by sge on an unpaid basis. Comey assigned him to special projects. He had a security clearance as well as badge access to the fbi building here in washington. Richmans employment, which lasted more than a year, was formalized through a memorandum. Senator Chuck Grassly questioned cge employees. After comey was fired, he did not describe richman as an former employee. He said he gave them to richman to kick start who is knew the mueller probe. I asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter. I didnt do it for a variety of reasons. I did it because i thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel. So i asked a friend of mine to do it. Who was that . A good friend of mine from columbia law school. Fox news understands that richman was sent talking points on the clinton email investigation specifically the government server used for business and sandy berger, the Late National Security Adviser under president clinton. An fbi spokesmen said to fox that they had a number of special employees and nobody had unfetterred at says to the bureau. Neil thanks, catherine. The read on this can tom dupree. Is this note worthy that someone had more special clearance than average folks . Neil, this whole thing, the more we read about it, the curiouser it gets. Im surprised when former director comey was questioned that he leaked the memos to and comey described him as a friend, a professor. But for whatever reason he didnt mention that he was a special fbi employee, which strikes me as a pretty relevant data fact if youre asked that question about identifying who the guy is. Neil if i can switch gears with you. Jeff sessions on capitol hill. He was asked whether he would recuse himself in the Michael Cohen investigation. You know, he hasnt. Im wondering whether that is even germane or useful . It doesnt surprise me. Im at a loss to figure out what basis he would recuse himself from the cohen investigation. Needless to say, im sure the attorney general is more sensitive to these questions of recusal now than when he came into office. So he would be recused if he felt he was under a legal mandate. I dont see any facts that would warrant it at this time. Neil he was asked about this report if Rod Rosenstein were fired, he would quit. And threatened to quit. Danced around the subject. But do you think he would and then what . Yeah, thats a great question, neil. My sense is i think theres probably some truth behind his threat. I dont think Jeff Sessions is someone to make idle threats or send false warnings. If the attorney general felt that rod was terminated unjustly, to say without justifiable cause to do so, i think theres a very good chance that the attorney general would resign. This is his way of putting down a public marker to basically say to the president , if youre thinking about doing this, make sure you understand that my resignation would be another collateral consequence of that decision. Neil im wondering if the world is coming back to see the wisdom of some of the attorney generals ways . For example, his face at the i. G. In this case could be impartial and fair looking into andy mccabe at the Justice Department for leaking. Sure enough, not only the is Inspector General hard on him for lying but recommending, you know, criminal charges for doing so. This is just the latest. Do you think the tides could be turning for mr. Session and how he handles things . I sure hope it is. My view is that Jeff Sessions is by and large a man of sounds judgment. I think his judgment in this i. G. Situation has been borne out. What he predicted is what materialized. That we would get a rigorous independent investigation, that ultimately benefits all americans because we can all agree this is end and nonpartisan. So well see. Theres no question that Jeff Sessions has work to do in some quarters running back the relationship of trust that exists between the white house and Justice Department. Hes on the right track and i hope he will be given the chance to do it. Neil that would extend to andy mccabe. All the people raised money for him. Anything but now, right . Thats right. Jeff sessions is a smart man. He makes a lot of judgments that are controversial at the time. He has facts that a lot of us dont have. We only know what the public knows. He knows more. Hes right fairly often. Neil your quick take on these principals, including those that have left, comey, mccabe and a host of others. I can go to clapper and all whoed that very dim views of donald trump. Certainly had those i haves back then. Didnt share them with folks publicly. Oftentimes i wonder if that old expression, you have a right to feel paranoid because a lot of people are trying to get you is justified here. Yeah. I think theres some truth to that, neil. Weve seen we saw the emails from certain folks at the fbi who clearly had a partisan axe to grind. In some cases, it does seem that peoples partisan views might have colored their professional judgments. Its hard to say in the case of any particular individual when they might have crossed the line. Theres so many people that definitely dont seem to have been happy with the outcome of the election and now were learning more and more what went on behind the scenes. Neil thanks, tom. Thank you. Neil all right. Play ball. They did. The gop lawmakers gathering up a year after that infamous shooting. What happened . A guy on the field then and now next. Many insurance plans cover chantix for a low or 0 copay. Neil all right. Theyre back playing baseball. Barry laudermilk was there a year ago and back today. How did it go today . It went well. It was a day full of emotion for a lot of us. For the whole team, that was the first time we were back on the field. Too me it was important to finish the practice that we never got to finish. A lot of emotions and a lot of spirit. We were back and were going to show the world were not going to be deterred. Was Steve Scalise there . No. Hes still recovering from another surgery. There was a large press presence. Steve did have a written statement that was read after the practice. He problemingly was saying something like, you know, you almost look fair compared to me. But im wondering, what were you thinking that day . You remember so well what happened last year. What was going through your mind . Something that youll never forget. Many of us today, weve even shared stories of living that event over and over again. I was by home plate when he started shooting. I ran off the field. I got behind a shed. Thats when i saw one of the Staff Members shot in the chest. It was frustration. I was doing everything i could to get to matt micah. The shooter was doing everything he could to kill us. A lot of frustration watching a friend of mine dying in front of me and unable to because of being pinned down by gun fire. The response of the Capitol Police that were there, the emts. It was a miracle that none of our players and our staff were killed even though they were critically wounded. Neil were Capitol Hill Police there today, sir . They were. A very strong presence, i should add. From what we understand, thats going to be the standard going forward. When youre set to play to democrats, how do you think youll look this year . You know what were saying . Last year doesnt count. Like myself, none of the Republican Team got any sleep. Were saying last year didnt count. We won the year before. I think were going to do well. Neil youre being liberal with that policy. Congressman, thanks very much. Glad everyone got to it and is safe. Very good seeing you. Thank you. Neil first, free tuition. Now Bernie Sanders ready to roll out a new guarantee for every american you get a government job. Only one question. Who pays for that . Neil all right. Dr. Ronny jackson, the president s choice to head the v. A. , the president said with all the dustup an controversy, he thinks highly of the white house doctor but he wouldnt go through it. He doesnt think its worth the grief. The president said he would support him in that effort. So far Ronny Jackson has said hes not going anywhere. Speaking briefly the reporters on the new allegations including one that said that, you know, he crashed a car, wrecked a car while drunk. He said not true. Jackson said he was still moving ahead on this nomination. He said he didnt wreck a car and should be easy to prove that he didnt wreck a car. He doesnt know where the allegations are coming from. They first popped up in the washington post. Others have said hes not up to the job, a huge Government Agency and overseeing a medical staff of 16 in the white house, hes not cut for it. Lets get the read from jonas, jessica and maddie. Maddie, he says hes not going anywhere. The president wonders why he puts up with it. Hes not going anywhere. What do you make of it . Fair question from President Trump. As you mentioned, the practice in place for making sure whether these allegations are true are false are straightforward. Theres a practice in place to confirm these cabinet positions. We should be moving forward for the senate to do their job, looking at the qualifications that the good doctor might have and making that determination. He should get the chance to answer questions by being in a hearing. So far all weve had is allegations in the press rumored behind closed doors. Thats not the process of getting a cabinet secretary confirmed. Neil in the interim, theyre waiting. The Top Republicans and democrats are not abandoning him. The president did say look, if i were you, i wouldnt put up with this nonsense. I dont care about the allegations of like Car Accidents and drugs people get in Car Accidents and drink. That doesnt mean theyre bad at running hospitals. The focus should be on the other allegations. The personal indiscretions, thats not relevant to running a business. Neil jessica, comes at a time that why does the president have a devil of a time getting nominees through, like mike pompeo being approved, its like pulling teeth. But they just never let up. No, they dont. Democrats have taken to this strategy as one that benefits them in the resistance as it were, to make these hearings as difficult as possible for the nominees. Im not saying theyre inventing issues per se but when you look at the numbers and you know a person is going through because we are in the minority, some of it does feel like youre slowrolling things, especially with ambassadorships like rick grannell. To the point about dr. Ronny jackson and to what jonas just said. Theres accusations of a hostile work environment, which i think is relevant to his capacity to running the v. A. Not only the 375,000 employees, if you if hes treating those on his staff, even that much smaller, in an inappropriate way at all, we certainly dont want that person in a cabinet position. But generally speaking the most important thing to be hearing from him in his testimony is his capacity and ability to be running a bureau of this size. Neil all right. All i know is two formers president s, barack obama and president bush thought highly of the doctor. I know this is different, serving an agency for 11 million veterans. But it does appear to be helping him. You raise an excellent point. That our v. A. Is not doing its job in serving our veterans. Thats the most crucial question. So far the question hasnt been asked or answered in the press or otherwise. Theres too much speculation going on about all of these allegations about his personal behavior, what have you and frankly i think its time for if this is going to be a nomination that moves forward, it should have the questions that senators need to ask, ask publicly and have the doctor defend himself. He should have testimony explaining any of these questions about whether or not hes fit to do what is a very big job. Is this longer term that this is rule of thumb now . Its getting more difficult to democrats are feeling confident from the direction things are going, theyre acting like theyre already winning and its going to be get simple things through and this political battle and where you have to take a stand on it showing where you are. Look, i think it would be better in the trump situation if this guy id rather i dont know how you do it. How you get executives that run private ones to work well to get the rats out of the v. A. System. This could be as good as you get and go with it. Neil thanks. Dr. Ronny jackson says hes not going anywhere and will fight. The president says he will support him in the fight.
