Through the investigation, police say they dont believe theres an imminent threat right now. That doesnt mean theyre letting their guard down. Earlier in the week, police led us in the countser terrorism center. Threats like this are shared and where they monitor video cameras across the city. This weekend, police say theyre staying vigilant. Were working with our partners to do everything we can to ensure the safety of the las vegas community. Every day, every person that comes into this center is focused on that. Thats what we do, thats who we are, trying to ensure the safety and pry vent any type of terrorist activity. Obviously were expecting hundreds of thousands of people for memorial day weekend. So police say being one of the event capitols of the world, theyre looking for new ways to keep those events and the people going to them. They started putting up condition concrete barriers up to prevent people from driving into crowds. Theyre asking people to call in anything suspicious. They said they would rather be safe than sorry. People have been privy to have this, let alone you witnessed a dozen of your men dieing to a terror attack. People are not aware of that until they see it up close. Theyre not aware of the fact that this is a perennial concern with any country anywhere. And yet we sometimes get comfortable in this country. Theres a lot of intelligence out there, especially at his level where hes exposed to raw intelligence. Theres a flip side that the American People should know. While the threat is there, the key to us is to ensure that they can go out, Forward Deployed and Foreign Countries working with partners to share intelligence to keep our nation safe and other nations as well. I always wonder, how you advise people to go about this. Ive been reading in a lot of the british press, advice for parents, if youre dropping your kid off or if they want to go to a concert or a public venue, a theater or what have you. So we change our schedules a bit. Its been years since the attack on the u. S. S. Cole, years since 911. But with distance grows a malaise. You sort of forget. How do you balance that out . Especially now with britain under this heightened alert of a second bomb, the critical threat level. Indicating something could be imminent. Its pronounced there, less so here. I think the American People are pretty smart. Weve heard the saying see something say something. You need to expand that. If youre going to a large venue where theres large people, thats obviously a more ripe target for a terrorist. Keep your whereabouts. Make sure theres nothing suspicious. Keep an eye on the people around you. You dont need to be scared. Be observant. If you do see something this odd, ask about it. Question someone. Knowledge the person next to you. What do you think about that . What do you think about that individual . Its just being proactive. Its something that unfortunately the israelis have learned about for years. Europe is learning about that now. Lets hope it doesnt come home here to the scope and degree that europe has had to live with because of the influx of immigrants. But given libya with a new focus, the abedi, the mastermind of the attack in manchester, hes brother and father arrested, other accomplices questioned in britain. But the common link seems to be libya, communicating with folks there. What do you make of that . I think its part of how we track and try to determine what terrorist networks are larger sharing intelligence between both the United States and partner nations so that we can build that larger picture. What groups are the terrorists belongs to . And figure out, who are the key people recruiting, financing and organizing these groups . When you understand how theyre working, how theyre doing their job, then youll be able to start figuring out, how do we target them for defeat. First with individuals, then the Financial Networks neil commander, we know a lieutenant about this if you think about it. Theres 400 or 500 active investigations of people plotting to do what abedi did. In fact, he was on the list. If you include anybody connected with that activity or curious activity, the number approaching 3,000. What do you do with those people . In this country, you can question them but you cant detain them unless you have something to grab them on. What do you do . I think its a great question, neil. That is one of the great conundrums that any democracy will face. While individuals have certain rights and freedoms under their various forms of government and under our constitution, sometimes just getting a knock on the door. The fbi pays you a visit and say, you know, we notice odd things going on. We notice your communication patterns and statements that you made. These are the kind of things that make those people aware because what you want to do is first and foremost, give them pause, give them an opportunity to rethink who theyre associating with and what theyre planning to do. More importantly, its to try to make them move so we can figure out who are they talking to, who are they informing, what are they planning on doing. Its getting inside that network, getting inside the persons head so that we can in fact get the tip or information that allows local Law Enforcement to thwart that attack. What do we make of that . Where weve identified a few of the leakers . Normally you shed light on those leaking stuff, it stops. What do you think . Yeah, any time you have a problem like that, Counter Intelligence investigation, so what do you do . You have to create a list of all of those people. Perhaps the british authorities have some specific information that these leaks came directly from the u. S. I dont know that. So were making a bit of a leap here to say that the leak didnt come from somebody on the british side providing that information either directly to New York Times individual or middleman. But regardless, wherever the leak happens, what you do is you decide who has access to this information and thats a relatively simple process at the 30,000 foot level. Who was given or had access to the classified information, sensitive material and then you start working off that list. In putting it in simple terms, you haul those people in and you talk to them directly about their activity. If youre in a position to because perhaps theyre in Law Enforcement or the intel community, you polygraph them. Cant make it any simpler than that. Neil i wonder if it goes beyond intelligence that may have been compromised regarding britain. The leaks that happen on a daily basis and news organizations seize on that, lets say russian and the trump campaign, if were able to isolate that to those that work at the white house, im just beginning to wonder here whether changes the complexion of this debate. A lot of people in the past have not been concerned about who is leaking it. But would that change the game dramatically . Is it your experience that when leaks are exposed, leakers stop . Well, theres consequences, sure. Youre absolutely right to point this out. Not to get all theoretical on this. But over a period of time, when you continue to low er the bar and normalize people that cant keep their pie holes shot and its okay because theres no consequenc consequences, sure, you create anonymous sources. So its interesting. The New York Times came out with a nonsensical brief statement saying its none of our doing. The fact that the british authorities are completely spun up over this. You know, we handled this in a responsible manner. Well, you know, again, nonsensical. I dont want to say the New York Times might have willingly, knowingly possibly compromised or disrespected to some degree an ongoing terrorist investigation in the hopes of perhaps taking another shot at the trump administration. And all of the other president s since world war ii up until our most recent one. Its not fair to include them. Obviously people havent had time to digest their administrations, including incumbent. All of those president s were measured by popular opinion and their views of what they had accomplished. John f. Kennedy was number 1. Reagan was second, a close second. Most of the others scored reasonably well. One did drop substantially since the last survey five years ago. This is bill clinton. I was noticing that. What happened there . Well, 2016 was not a good year nor the clintons. We can all agree on that, neil. A lot of things were came out during the campaign, people were reminded of controversies in the 90s. So he dropped along with his wife. Back to kennedy. We found that 87 of americans have a favorable opinion of john f. Kennedy. By far the highest. Think about that. This was he served from 1961 to 1963. This was a long, long time ago. But he has maintained a presence because of his eloquence and public presentation. You showed that montage from press conferences. As you noted, he was quick, decisive, took loads of questions and did them one out of every 16 days and had selfdeprecating humor about himself. And he let it roll off of his back. And the womanizing and all the other stuff that came, and dependency on amphetamines. So much that we know that could have stained the legacy and has in manys eyes. I was in dallas where to this day you can see people crying. Many are young and wouldnt have been around at the time of kennedys assassination. And what does the assassination and the grief that came with it help his numbers today . I dont think doubt about that. Look, that is one of the most horrible tragedies of the second half of the 20th century. Anybody that lived through that would agree. I guess you visited the museum, which is a wonderful institution there that doesnt color history one way or the other. Just presents what happened. And so sure, it did. Look, he was cut down at the age of 46. He was the youngest elected president at 43. He was the youngest president to die in all of american history. 46 years old. So hes forever young. Unlike us, neil neil youre right about that. But the one thing, when you look back on it and the tax cut thing is interested because im interested in economic policy. I did a dissertation on this in college. I was fascinated by how he had to flip things around. Republicans were keen on his ideas. Not so democrats. He had the preverse role that barack obama did that came to fruition after his death. What did you make of that . It was a very tough climb for kennedy on the tax cut. Youre corrected, neil. He was opposed by a lot of democrats. But they were southern democrats. He worried about the National Debt and worried about the fact that a tax cut might spur in flagran flagrants inflation. Republicans were worried about stimulating a round of inflation. Kennedy worked on them. It took until after his death. It would pass the house right before his assassination. Lyndon johnson took it up as a First Priority of the new johnson administration. It was passed in february of 1964. You know why johnson passed it so quickly . He believed as kennedy did it would stimulate the economy. Neil and it did. Thats exactly what happened. Neil let me get your quick thoughts on this. Ive been amazed when i learn to the cuban missile crisis tapes. John kennedy is there. Hes saying the least of anyone. He would interject with a question here and there. But hes saying the least. John ossoff had a big lead in the primary. This is a neck and neck race. This is what were seeing internally and will be neck and neck until june 20th. Its going to be neck and neck until election day. This is a direct won by the president by 1 . Were putting all of our resources there.
