Lose to make that happen could happen. Gerri willis on how the tide has turned. Shepard thats right. The cook report, a high profile often accurate political prognosticators is sevenday forecasting that the republicans could lose the house in the midterm elections. Three gop members from leaning republican to tossup categories. Representativing Mike Kauffman of colorado, steve knight of california and jason lewis of california. While 11 moved from likely republican to lean republican. An additional six lawmakers moved from solid republican to likely republican. Why . Such a bleak view for the gop . You said it. Noting the gopled American Healthcare act garnered 17 of Popular Support in a recent quinnipiac poll. Cooks poll David Wasserman wrote these words, not only did republicans hitch their names to an unpopular piece of legislation, democrats received ott valuable candidate recruitment tool. Change elections are not uncommon. The last occurred in 2006 when democrats swept the house, the senate and a majority of governorship. Will the republicans experience a route in 2018 is yet to be known. Neil . Neil thanks very much. We should stress here, that is a view of one guy that follows this stuff for a living and follows the trends. They dont always pan out. The fear that all of a sudden a party will get routed and another one gains doesnt always pan out. Heres the added pressure on republicans to get the healthcare replace and rework done and the tax cuts done as well. If you push those back into an election year, all bets are off. If you buy that notion from the cook report that republicans lose their majority in the house under a pelosi . What are the odds you think youll get the tax cuts in the first place . Katie pavlich. How real is danger, this risk . Its always a risk. Swings depending on the environment and Neither Party should take advantage that theyre in power. Were only four months into the new trump administration. Theres a lot of things thrown on to the table, lots of discussion on capitol hill and a lot that needs to be done throughout the course of the year. The president has put a lot on the agenda. Obamacare repeal, tax reform and infrastructure. Heres the problem. You live by the promise on the campaign trail to get elected and die by the unkept promise when it comes to reelection. If you promise these big things and you cant get them done. Neil ive heard from some republican congressmen that said, neil, lets say worst case scenario, we lose the majority. All the more impetus to get it done. How will they push tax cuts to get through and leaving to the democrats to try to undo that . Seems like a leap here. What do you think . Republicans have a big chance right now to fulfill the promises. If they lose their majority in the house, well go back to the old argument saying look, we dont have a majority and we cant get our priorities to the president s desk. They have a republican house, Republican Senate and a republican in the white house. The issue is that the house and the white house are on the same page in terms of timing with tax reform. But the senate is on a different page when it comes to the timing of pushing through the projects and getting obamacare care deal. Republicans dont get some of their big promises through and lose their majority, you can bet they wont get through the next two years after the midterms. Neil youve been around to follow this. I feel like the republicans have not explained their position well or explain the ross perottype charts and easel boards saying what we have not is not sustainable. Math doesnt favor us. As many times as they bring that up, they have never illustrated to say we have no choice but to rework this. It seems to be something that theyre not really effective at getting across. The urgency of doing something. I would argue theres too many charts and too much political jargon going on. Neil never enough charts. Lets say of the jimmy kimmel session where he talked about preexisting conditions on his late night show. That is a cultural issue. Culture is always upstream from politics. Republicans are having a really hard time and have forever in telling people stories. Obamacare was implemented and people were losing insurance by the millions, conservatives told people stories of losing Coverage Even though they were told they were allowed to keep it. Losing doctors. In the last four months, we havent seen those human stories to sell the Healthcare Plan to paul ryan just pushed through the president celebrated at the white house. So republicans should do a better job of story telling, not from charts but from a very important perspective that you and i and everybody watching your program can really understand. It impacts you at home, impacts your children and your own health. More story telling and fewer charts. Neil i dont know. I can well up at charts. Youre very smart. Not that the rest of us arent but youre probably better reading them than we are. Neil thanks, katie. The battle goes on and the timing and pushing back the tax cuts. Meantime what if i told you donald trump and the war of the press and the fake media, what if i said there was precedence for that . Yeah, with Richard Nixon before donald trump. Today Michael Rogers from the nsa testifying about that probe but focusing on the leakers. Connell mcshane knows more. Hey, connell. The nsa says the russians are up to no good. We have not heard a direct connection between that no good and the Trump Campaign. Also in the hearing, theres more questions raised about the unmasking of americans and whether that was warranted. To that in a second. First, mike rogers was called into the senate hearing. He said the russians have not slowed down at all. That was the headline to come out today, theyre still at it, still making efforts to affect the outcomes of elections. He was questioned about the investigation of the Trump Campaign and their alleged russian connections and how information was gathered and eventually leaked. Somebody took that information that we gained through collection of flynn and gave it to the washington post. Somehow it got to the media. That is a crime. And that is a leak and illegal, yes, sir. Are you concerned about people taking the law in their own hands . Yes, sir. Thats why ive gone to my work force in writing and make sure we understand what the professional ethos of our organization is. We do not engage in this behavior. If i catch you, ill hold you criminally liable. Strong words there. Senator graham asked rogers if he knew whether the former National Security adviser susan rice had asked for an american citizen to be unmasked. Rogers said, this is a quote, id have to pull that data, sir. I apologize. That is where that exchange ended. We still have a number of questions about this even after this hearing. Neil all right, connell. Thank you very much. This president , donald trump, has been at war with the press. The press he says really at war with him. There is a precedence for this. Richard nixon. Long before there was the back and forth on whether you could trust what you were told on the news, there was Richard Nixon, spiro agnew and pat buchanan. He said they are out to get you. Pat is next. Most on these balloons. Travel with my daughter. Roller derby. Now give up half of em. Do i have to . This is a tough financial choice we could face when we retire. But, if we start saving even just 1 more of our annual income. We could keep doing all the things we love. Prudential. Bring your challenges. Rays always been different. Last year, he said he was going to dig a hole to china. At t is working with farmers to improve irrigation techniques. Remote moisture sensors use a Reliable Network to tell them when and where to water. So that farmers like ray can compete in big ways. China. Oh. He got there. Thats the power of and. Deartheres no other way to say this. Its over. Ive found a permanent escape from monotony. Together, we are perfectly balanced, our senses awake, our hearts racing as one. I know this is sudden, but they say if you love something. Set it free. See you around, giulia sfx engine revving silence if the medias job is to be honest and tell the truth, i think we would all agree the media deserves a very, very big fat failing grade. We had a very good call. That was a little bit of fake news. Very proud of the people standing behind me. Im far less proud of the people standing in front of me. The media. Neil all right. Now, a whole generation of americans have come to think that donald trump is the first to sort of epitomize that view of the media is bad and a lot of the stuff they say and spout is fake but theres a precursor to this. Pat nixon wrote the white house wars, the battle that made and broke an american president forever. I forget that pat is so old. He was old when he was advising Richard Nixon. I was 12 years old. Neil i forgot until reading this fine book. Its very good. Nixon had this suspicion of the press when he lost to kennedy and that the media was happy and relieved to see him go. When i went to work for nixon, i was an editorial writer. One of the first things he said, the press is the enemy. I thought okay, okay. You know, i didnt take it fully in. But donald trump says the meade and the media are the enemy of the people. The truth was by the end of the Nixon White House years, a lot of folks like ray price that came from the herald tribute, they agreed that nixon and the press was just a war as teddy white said it was a war, a hatred between the two of them. Neil this is me gleaning between the chapters in the back. Where nixon wanted to win over the media, win over the establishment, youre really wasting your time. But trump doesnt give a damn. Its amazing about trump. He goes against them every day. Nixon held off and held off. Finally after his speech to rally the country behind the vietnam war, the networks trashed him. Thats where i recommended them we go behind them with a high profile attack. Thats what happened. You know, nixon held off. He would neil he would say where the coverage wasnt fair. I said you make the case about the power and the bias. In campaign of 72, we ran so strong. Everybody said i dont care what the media does to us. Leave them along. Mcgovern is the talk. Focus on his extremism and nixon went with it and understood it. With president trump, its every minute, every day and the failing new york times. Neil very few republican her heros, but it was funny going back in time here. I wasnt even born. Okay. I was. But ted kennedy, you wrote this was very powerful nixon often spoke of what the kennedys got away with and the double standard what he was judged with. We have no margin of stakes. The legacy students would be confined to campus for the weekend. In other words guys like kennedy got a pass. Guys like nixon did not. Nixon called me after the man walked on the moon. He said you think he will get away with this . Kennedy had gone off the bridge with the girl in the car and left her to drown. It was horrendous. It was two days before. I said no way he escapes this. But he was a candidate to run against us in a couple years because the whole media, the Kennedy Organization neil he ended up not running. But he was elevated. But can you imagine if nixon had done that and lied about it . Before in the motel, acting he would have been we would have all resigned. Neil what i didnt realize, that youre a good historian as well, when nixon got into office because of the threeway race with wallace and the he only got 43 of the vote. He didnt take congress with him. That hadnt happened in a long, long time. So theres no mandate. The end of his first year, he was 19 approval. This is after the attacks from the media. The great silent majority speech. He pulled together reagan, rockefeller wings that united it. Wallace had this huge vote, 21 . We carved off the northern catholics and the south protestants on patriotism and vietnam and Supreme Court judges. Youll get a southerner on the court. Neil the modern trump coalition. A lot of our folks are gone. You can never win 49 states now. Neil that was the realists. Richard nixon was in disgrace. Rejected. In 62, 64, alltime loser. 72, eight years later, 49 states to 1. Hes on top of the world. The stupid breakin thing, bandly handled. Blunders. Neil even you seem perple d perplexed. But in a moderate white house, you were the conservative that didnt get it. Nixon, he said buchanan, the only extremist i know with a sense of humor. We had a lot of force taking the party over in 64. Inside the party at its top, we had liberal republicans in the cabinet. You had technicians and liberals in the white house. I was at 30 years old, i was the one really known conservative or fairly well known conservative in the nixon entourage. Neil why did you join the white house . Why this president . He was a he did a lot of liberal things. He ran populous, conservative campaign, conservative issues. Nixon woke up and real listed in 64 even though goldwater was wiped out, this was a rising force and put together with my own centrist republicans, it was a dominant force in the republican party. Once we get the nomination, we have to get different folks. Eventually in 72, he brought them in. All of what became the reagan democrats ten years later. Neil im wondering, in working with nixon, working in this distrust to the media, who came up with the silent majority . It was my phrase. I got it. I came back from the Chicago Democratic Convention neil spiro agnew espoused it. But next used it in his november 3 speech. We saw the riot in the street and i said when you go to chicago, reach out to the silent majority out there, the folks not in the streets and the rest of it. The phrase stuck with him. He carried illinois that year. In the silent majority was the great november 3 speech urging the folks to stand with him on vietnam. Neil a lot of people say there could be a powerful lesson here for donald trump, that also capturing the silent majority out there and angry. A couple things. He had been wounded early and he wanted to get back at his adversaries. People were going to pay him back and kept pushing people. A couple people did the breakin, did something stupid. Doing what he had to do, just say we have to cut him dead. Get him some lawyers. Were out of here. Neil the coverup killed him. The first day, guys were coming in the white house asking for help. Neil did you ever say, what are you think something what are you doing . I get that with donald trump. Does anybody tell the emperor he has no clothes or no argument . Youll say we ought do do this. Thats an excellent idea. But heres the upside. Heres the down side. Neil if you were advising donald trump right after his inauguration and he wanted to make the crowd sizes a big issue and told sean spicer, what would you say . I say we think the photos are accurate. Drop it, sir. Thats what id say. Neil they didnt. Thats the problem. Theres people in trumps white house, just you and i talking, probably said the same thing. Neil they are afraid to take on the chief. They probably said it. Then he says, no, im going to do it. Neil but like Ronald Reagan by comparison, seemed to strike me as a guy that let things roll off his back. I was in his white house. He had a temper. When gorbachev said we have a deal. Now throw sdi in the pot. I saw him come out of that room. He was face was a mask of rage. I got back to the embassy with him. I was unhappy. So we get to the air base after an hour ride. He went into the people and he was the ginner again. Neil he said stuff like Ronald Reagan did. Never let them see you sweat. Nixon is different. He bruted. Reagan had a healthy anger. 15 minutes later, the sun comes out. Neil what about trump . By comparison. I dont know about his very personal. Very charming, very pleasant. Neil but he never forgets. I have italian relatives that are like that. What do you think of that . Is he Getting Better . I think nixon also, he remembered all of those slights and injuries and things like that. But you have a good point. He wanted their ism aprobation. He keeps going them. Its a mistake. One time i compared the press to like a dog rolled up in the corner. If its growling, leave it be. Neil your campaign set the populous wave, too. The 1992, the America First was our slogan. Neil all right. Then they went back to hating you. Pat buchanan, the nixon wars. An uncanny read at the time that set the stage for where were at today. Without that we probably wouldnt have donald trump. I could be wrong. More after this. At red lobsters seafood trios you dont have to choose just one thing. Choose your trio with any 3 of 9 selections for 15. 99. The legislation should not have taken that long. Hopefully it takes a month or two to get through the senate. Hopefully by the fall. Yeah, a month or two. We need to get people the ability to plan. That was paul ryan on fox earlier today. Saying healthcare shouldnt be one and District Attorney and all of a sudden through everything real fast. It will take time. The Senate Healthcare working group member, the senator from wyoming available on there. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me. Neil i know youre working or something on your own and reconcile whatever differences there are remaining in the house. That this could take some time despite the ambitious, you know, predictions on the party of speaker ryan. How long does think it takes . We want to make sure we get this right. As the old basketball coach, john wooden, used to say, you want to do it quick but dont want to be in a hurry. We want to make sure we can get it right in terms of lowering premiums for americans that have suffered sky rockets costs of obamacare and protect people with preexisting conditions and rescue those people right now who have been harmed by the crumbling of the Obamacare Health care law. Neil youre losing on the p. R. War. Weve chatted about this. Its not significant but not insignificant. The American People have this note maybe all of these town hall hearings that youre taking healthcare away from them, that youre taking away their loved ones and putting them on life support. How do you think republicans should address that if thats the narrative that is being hosted in the media . Theres a lot of scare tactics out there. We do protect everybody with preexisting conditions . Neil everyone . Thats another thing that comes up. In some states they could be loosy goosy on this. If a state chooses and option that is in the house bill. Were coming up with our own senate bill. T to make sure peop preexisting conditions are protected, the premiums have skyrocketed, we can get them lower and rescue the people that have been hurt by the collapsing obama healthcare law. Neil the senate will have a feature in there that is not as vague. What that calls for, if you let your coverage lapse and you try to get it again, youll pay through the nose. People need to take some level of responsibility if they try to gain the system. Dont try to buy understand until after they get sick. That is what driving up the cost. Youre asking what do i hear at home. I was at home as i am every weekend. I was at a health fair over the weekend and a couple of communities. What im hearing from people, my premiums are too high, the deductibles are too high. The copays are too high. I have fewer choices. I only have one choice to buy from. Theres only one Company Selling in wyoming. Its not what we want. Its not what works for me and my family and its because of obamacare that we are suffering. Thats what im hearing at home. All of a sudden, obamacare hasnt gotten more popular. The problems are there. Were trying to address this now, neil, because of the collapse of the healthcare law with higher prices, fewer choices and really a loss for the American People. No matter what won the president ial election, if it was Hillary Clinton or president trump, you were going to have to deal with the reality of how much problem there is with this healthcare law. Neil so no regrets taking this on before tax cuts. No, this is what the American People are focused on. We need to get this right, do it in a timely manner but were not going to be rushed. Neil thanks, senator. Thanks, neil. Neil all right. You know, ceos tend to do things their own ways. Now we have a ceo as president. Well have tips after this. Hes author of am i being too subtle. Its something for which were never accused. Good to see you. Good to see you. Neil the one thing that stood out over the decades that ive interviewed you is you first of all dont take fools gladly. You had to do your homework or you would walk out of an interview. Its not about being loved, liking, getting the cool people to like you. That never mattered to you. For some reason, i always thats always been secondary to doing what i thought made sense. Neil yeah. But you almost liked being the thorn. Almost liked being the skunk. Am i imagining that . I dont know whether the word like is the right world. Neil zealously enjoyed. Ive had a lot of selfconfidence. If you have neil where did you get that . You came from nothing. I dont know. I made it on my good looks. Neil you were very big early on. Dressing however that you pleased. I never remember you in a tie. You seem to be wearing jeans. Youd come into a meeting. You had the Comfort Level to do whatever you want. My thesis has been simple. If you dress funny and youre good at what you do, youre eccentric. If you dress funny and not good at what you do, youre a schmuck. You work very, very hard to be very good at what you do so you have the freedom to do whatever you want. Neil all right. I joked with you in the break here. We talked about life and politics. You laughed that off. Donald trump like you from the real estate world is getting a rude baptism about the difference between dealing with a board and dealing with a lot of competing political interests. I dont know what board he dealt with before but its different than what hes dealing with today. Neil how do you think hes doing . I think hes doing a lot better than anybody expected. I think hes learning how to be president. I think hes learning a great deal about his job. So in that respect i think hes done well. I think his selection of cabinet members and gorsuch have been excellent. In that respect, im very comfortable. I would love to take his twitter key away from him. Neil i was wondering about that. That diminishes his stature. Neil you wrote about integrity. Integrity isnt just about following the letter of the law. Its about how you treat people. Doing business in a fair and above board way and keeping your word. I cant stand bullies or people insulting, sneaky or passive aggressive. Its true. Thats kind of the way neil you must run into them. Of course. Neil how do you deal with them . Like in your industry, theres a lot of them. You know, im very good at ignoring things. Im pretty good at understanding, you know that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. And i go in a straight line. If that runs over somebody, so be it. Neil all right. You ran into that when you were trying to deal with tribune, the big media company. You sort of had a frontline experience working with journalists, working with those that had multiple bureaus all over the world. Some duplicates. You dont like a lot of those people, did you . I had a lot of trouble respecting them. I thought what i laid out was very obvious. The futures of print wasnt the great secret. Neil why did you do it . I really believed when i underwrote the deal, i underwrote it to have revenues reducing by 6 a year, so i didnt expect an extraordinary experience. I expected that over time printed would continue to recede. I thought the way i structured the transaction and the way we put it together, the risk reward neil you think journalists even then would think there would be a dying medium. Arent you making a large assumption when journalists assume . Neil you dont like journalists, do you . My experience in the journalistic world leaves a lot to be desired. Neil donald trump called them the fake news media. Thats far too aggressive for my taste. I think a lot of people in the journalistic arena are very educated and they equate education with being right. I dont think thats the case. Neil when you look at the world as it is today, you made i dont remember made your fortune after the 87 crash, buying properties that were depressed. So someone called you a vulture. But what do you think of the markets now . What do you think of real estate now . I think real estate is floppy. Neil where . Everywhere. Ive been a seller neil what worries you . Well, you know, as is always the case, after periods of, you know, performing very well, supply is an issue. Were going to build more apartments this year than ever in any given oneyear period. Neil a lot of people say its not like the frothiness before the meltdown, or you say it is. That by the case. Im not at all predicting a commercial real estate disaster like what happened in the subprime arena. But i think that things are frothy and i think were going to have more simply than demand. I think were going to see an adjustment. Neil warren buffet says ceos shouldnt worry about getting tax cuts. They should worry about runaway healthcare costs what do you say . Healthcare costs are very threatening. You know, we deal with it in a lot of different ways. We also own a whole chain of hospitals. So think the healthcare issue has been and will continue to be a huge challenge for our country. Neil the mood on wall street today is that were looking forward to tax cuts, things will be great. The run up will continue. Tech is hot. Things will go well. Big deals will continue going. You agree . I dont think i agree with that level of optimism. I think the real basis for optimism is the option that trump has to change and stimulate our economy by deregulation. Over the last eight years, we had a president that believes that redistribution is the goal of the presidency. You cant have redistribution and growth. Theyre incompatible. The result was weve had very subpar growth. The opportunity and the real issue for trump is that by continuing to deregulate or changing whats going on, he has an opportunity to materially stimulate the economy neil and change history. Without incurring debt. Neil sam zell, well have more after this. Z282uz zwtz y282uy ywty yeah, cause i got allstate. . If you total your new bike, they replace it with a brand new one. So, kinda like your second husband. Kinda. Its good to be in good hands . Neil everybody has a smart phone, right . This one about a fight that broke out in a ft. Lauderdale airport after Spirit Airlines cancelled flights. You know how that goes. Trace gallagher, what happened here . You know what, neil . Spirit airlines has never been to the top of the heap when it comes to service. When the weather is flawless and youre cancelling hundreds of flights, the worst customers get peeved. Heres the deal. Spirit airlines and its pilots have been in contract negotiations for more than two years. The pilot said the airline makes above average profits but the pilots make the lowest wages in the industry. The airline filed a lawsuit ag union accusing the pilots of engaging in an illegal slow down but not agreeing to work certain flights. Spirit saying these pilots have put their quest for a new contract ahead of getting customers to their destination and safety of the fellow spirit team members. The union denies the allegation and the passengers are over it. Listen up. People getting arrested left to right. Nowhere to sit, nowhere to stand. They are putting us out. We didnt do anything. Too crowded. It was terrible. They didnt put us on stand by. It was horrible. Im over spirit. Neil turns out the investors may be over it as well. Their stock price is down 5 earlier in the day. That its not only the right thing to do, its the brave thing to do. He said it doesnt take a lot of courage to those already powerful and comfortable and influential but it takes great courage to champion the vulnerable, the sick and the infirm. For this, he received the john f. Kennedy profile in courage award. Thats a big deal. Really . No offense to john kennedy but exactly where is the courage giving people everything they want but hiding the real cost . Wheres the courage and saying you can keep your doctor but knowing full well you cant or steering the American People in the face and insisting their premiums wont skyrocket, but they have. Tell me how ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country morphed into go ahead and ask what your country can do for you. We will just leave the bill with a few to pick up the tab. Where is the bravery . That shared sacrifice . The selfless gods and advocating you are saving money on health care as the ignore the increases in the cost of health care. Dont mistake chutzpah for courage. One brought us back from the brink, the other into financial abyss, a medical abyss. Whos because we cannot fathom. Theres no courage in guaranteeing benefits only in outline the cost of those benefits, covering preexisting conditions is good. Ignoring the math the unit will doesnt support the coverage is bad. Its not courageous to say what is courageous are these congressmen getting pilloried, risking their jobs. The media isnt calling them brave for calling the shoddy math for what it is. Forget profile encourage. Barack obama praising the legislative boobytrap he set off. Thats a profile in audacity. What would be brave to say is that you botched it, you oversold it, to take a page from kennedy himself and say simply you missed it. Remember, it was jfk who said victory has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan. Risk saying youve screwed up. At risk admitting that the republicans are on to something and not always on something. Risk acknowledging that coverage for some may mean increases for all. Health care for all sounds virtuous but hiding the unsavory elements is duplicitous. John kennedy also said the great enemy of truth is very often not the lie. But the myth. It was a myth from the beginning to call it the Affordable Care act. Barack obama knew it wasnt even close. That is the disservice of calling his Health Care Law an act of courage. It disgrace is the truth, disgraces john kennedy. On his 100th birthday, it is grace is not only has memory but jfks own definition of Something Else courage. Good night. Eboni i am eboni k.
