We covered the virus three days straight. China has been lying about this thing. What . Jesse theyve had it over there for a year and they havent told anybody about it and theres been undocumented deaths, 1,000 undiagnosed people and they have now i guess quarantined this one city but people have already escaped the quarantine and they have no idea where theyre going. I think the Trump Administration has a decision to make. I think out of the abundance of caution maybe you slap the ban on now. Im not afraid of this coronavirus at all and i think other people, they have the right to be scared, thats their business. If they dont have a hold on this thing, you slap the travel ban on of china both ways. Thats right. I called for a full travel ban against china in january. And i called out china for lying about the virus. What was the media saying about trumps ban . Politico said the travel ban could backfire. Coronavirus quarantine, travel ban could backfire experts fear. The New York Times, they said it was safe to travel to china. Unbelievable. So, pretty ridiculous. Heres what bernie and biden said about trumps travel ban. A move all scientists now say saved millions of lives. If you had to, would you close down the borders . No. Its interesting that a president that has been demonizing immigrants, the first thing he could think about is closing down the border. This is no time for Donald Trumps record of hysteria, xenophobia and fear mongering to lead the way instead of science. Jesse they were dead wrong. But now they want to claim trump didnt act quickly enough. Were not going to let them get away with that. In fact, the press asked the top two scientists on the task force if the federal government acted slowly. When you looked at the china data originally, you start thinking of this more like sars than you do this kind of global pandemic. So i think the medical community interpreted the chinese data as that this was serious but smaller than anyone expected because i think probably we were missing significant amount of the data. In a perfect world, it would have been nice to know what was going on there. We didnt. But i believe, jim, that we acted very, very early on that. Jesse so the lead american virus experts said america acted very, very early and could have acted even earlier but china lied to us. Nancy pelosi, shes running around saying trumps fiddling cost lives. What did he know, when did he know it . Thats for an after action review. But as the president fiddles, people are dying and we have to we just have to take every precaution. Jesse another cheap lie from nancy. When trump threw down the china travel ban, nancy was pushing a bill in the house to prevent trump from throwing down travel bans. What did nancy know . Apparently, not a whole lot. We are coordinating with the Chinese Government and working closely together on the coronavirus outbreak in china. Remember back in january when i said other people had a right to fear the virus. Andrew cuomo, the mayor that liberals love now, he disagreed with me. This situation is not a situation that should cause undue fear among people. Jesse i dont mind disagreeing with people on feeling fearful. I dont want people to be scared. I dont think they should live their lives in fear. But i cant control that. I speak for myself. I didnt fear the virus in january and i still dont. Because ive learned about the infection. Im healthy and have a positive attitude. We showed you last week how not to get it. Here he is again, dr. David price, the man, fighting covid19 on the front lines in manhattan and hes not scared either. For the first time in a while, im actually not scared. Become a hand nazi. Everything you know about your hands, keep them clean and you will not get this disease. The second thing is you have to start psychologically working on the connection between your hands and your face. So someone at a party has this and you shake their hand. Right. And then you touch your face. Its that simple. That is how you get this disease. The Trump Administrations war on science has left us vulnerable. Donald trump is not a doctor. Im not sure he believes in science. But the media is still on the attack. You said repeatedly that you think that some of the equipment that governors are requesting, they dont actually need. You said new york might not need 30,000. The brightest minds in america are working around the clock to find medicines to treat patients with coronavirus. Last month, President Trump touted a drug that was already out there, its used to treat malaria. A drug called chloroquine, this is a common malaria drug, very powerful drug in different forms. And it has shown very encouraging, very, very encouraging early results. And were going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately. Jesse the antima layemalaria, hydroxychloroquine was not approved by the fda to treat coronavirus but there was anecdotal evidence showing promising results. The president was hopeful but was savagely attacked in the media,. Telling people a fairytale like that is cruel and harmful and needlessly diverting and wildly irresponsible from anyone in any leadership role. Jesse 10 days later the fda issued an emergency authorization for the drugs and the media was singing a little different tune. We are now seeing promising new and early data from china about how hydroxychloroquine which is used to treat malaria, lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis could help coronavirus patients recover from the virus faster. Jesse the New York Times is coming around, first the times reported trumps embrace of unproven p drugs to treat coronavirus defies science. Now the times reports this. Malaria drugs help virus patients improve in a small study. The governor of michigan, gretchen whitmer, actually threatened to sanction doctors who prescribed the drugs to dying patients. Now she is begging the Trump Administration to send thousands of doses to michigan. So how close are we to finding a solid treatment for the virus . Weeks . Months . A year . Earlier i spoke to the fda commissioner, dr. Stephen hahn. Welcome to watters world. If you can, and please do it in the most rudimentary way, explain where we are with this antimalaria drug that everyones talking about. Thanks, jesse. Thanks for having me on your show. So this drug, theres two drugs, ones called high docks owe chloroquine hydroxychloroquine and one is called chloroquine. Both of these drugs are available for use around the world. Hydroxychloroquine is approved by fda for other diseases, not covid19. Jesse right. Now, the drug is available for prescription by a physician and putting on my doctor hat, that would mean if a patient or a doctor thinks that hydroxychloroquine might benefit them, thats an individual patient doctor decision. But we are also performing Clinical Trials because what we want is the necessary information to make a decision at the fda about whether its safe and effective for covid19. There are some preliminary data that we have from around the world that suggests it might have a benefit. But those data arent sufficient to make a decision about the safety and effectiveness which is why these Clinical Trials are so important. Jesse so right now, if theres a patient with covid19 and its a desperate situation, their doctor does have access to this drug and in an emergency situation can prescribe the drug in his or her recommendation . Thats right, jesse. We provided cdc has guidance around the risks and benefits of the drug so that the doctor can incorporate that in his or her decision making. A doctor could do that in a critical situation but a doctor could also do that in a nonp critical situation noncritical situation. This is truly a doctor, patient approach to what we call an offlabel prescription of a drug. Jesse are you aware of how often this is being prescribed in the United States right now for covid19 patients. We have some information that there has been a significant increase in the prescription of hydroxychloroquine for covid19 patients. Were making that assumption its for covid19 patients. But we dont have necessarily specific state by state. Jesse are you hearing any positive information about the results of this drug . So were hearing anecdotal reports of benefits. So sort of case by case. But what we really need to make the best decision for the American People by the fda is really a controlled trial so that we understand its true effect both on the safety side as well as on the effectiveness side. Jesse and when do you think a trial like that will be finished . It will take probably months for that trial to be finished, for us to get that information, and i know that sounds like a long time to people who are ill with this but its so important that we get the right answer and that we make our decisions based upon sound science and data. Jesse okay. So now convalescent plasma, if you could just kind of translate what that means and how thats being used currently in the United States. For sure. So consisten convalescent plasme you take a blood product, its plasma, the protein form, the liquid form of the blood that you take out of someone who has recovered from covid19. So these are people who are exposed to covid19, no longer have active infection, but theyve developed their own immunity against the covid19 virus. We can take the plasma from them, blood banks can, the red cross can, and concentrate that and create whats called convalescent plasma which is basically a unit of blood that we can give to someone who is sick and jesse, what this does, it transfers the immunity from the person who has had it to the person who is now sick. Jesse that sounds fantastic. Whats the timeline on that . So we have been allowing individual hospitals to do this on a case by case basis for the last 12 days. We will be announcing very soon a nationwide program in partnership with hospitals across the country and academic centers, run by the red cross and other blood banks, that will allow us to have people come in who recovered from covid19, donate the plasma, and then give this potentially lifesaving treatment to patients who are sick. Now, we dont have the full evidence behind this, so were doing this on a Clinical Trial called an expanded Access Program which allows us to gather the information about the income the outcome of patients. We are excited about it. We think it does have potential. Jesse thats very good. Im glad to hear that what about the vaccine . Where do we stand with that. There was news out of the university of Pittsburgh Medical School that there was a breakthrough with lab mice, that showed positive results and theyre fasttracking that. Whats the update . Were working with a number of different manufacturers and developers of vaccines at the fda and we are fasttracking that as well. There is one vaccine that is currently in Clinical Trial, that was being performed at seattle and is now well into the third week of that trial. So thats really quickmoving. Other developers are along the pathway of development and jesse, you want to start with development of the vaccine, then you want to test it in animals, then you want to go to humans if it looks like its safe at that point and then thats the progression after that for the development of the vaccine. Were looking at a year, probably, or a year to a little bit more than a year for the development of a vaccine although i have to tell you, we are working very hard with industry and manufacturers to try to accelerate that timetable. Jesse thats a long time. Youre saying best Case Scenario, next april . I think thats the best Case Scenario at this point although were really pushing hard to bring it sooner to the American People and the world. Jesse theres a chance it could go sooner. Before i let you go, the mask, from my understanding the main benefit to wearing a mask is to make sure you dont touch your face, because thats the primary method of transmission. You touch something, a surface or another human being with covid19 and then you touch your face. What the mask does, is it prevents you from up the up from touching your face, your mouth, your nose, Something Like that and i guess if youre working in very close quarters, with infected people, a mask is preferable and im not talking about the n90, you know, other people wear scarves, for instance, theres many options. Thats right. And, you know, we could refer to these as cloth facial coverings as opposed to masks. So when this outbreak started, the big question was could a mask in the normal happenstance of the world, not the medical care settings youre describing but just walking down the street, could a mask help prevent a person from getting the disease. And there really arent good data or evidence to suggest that thats the case for routine use. But whats happened as weve learned more about this illness is that there are a fair number of people who probably are asymptomatic but have the virus. Just dont know that they have it. Unlike some other viruses, that seems to be the case. And where a mask might be helpful, if you dont know you have it, preventing you from spreading it to someone else. Thats what folks are looking at now, whether thats a potential benefit to the American People. Jesse dr. Hahn, thank you very much. Keep up the great work. Really appreciate it. What were doing is we have a very good plan to take from some areas, even though we have the 10 or almost the 10,000, were also taking from areas that wont be as badly hit as today we think they will be. There will be some areas hit harder than we think and theres nothing that deborah or tony or any of these professionals can do about it. This thing moves in a lost of ways. But what were going to do is we are going to have, and you look at us compared to a lot of other countries, were in much better shape. But these professionals have done an amazing job. Now, over the next week and two weeks this is going to be a very, very deadly period, unfortunately. But were going to make it so that we lose as few lives as possible. You will be seeing, and we should not be surprised because the kinetics of how this virus works is that were going to be seeing that there are going to be deaths that continue to go up. But as i machinessed to this group and mentioned to this group and the general public multiple times, there really is a cascading of events where you have new cases, hospitalizations and intensive care and death. So at the same time that we may be seeing an increase in deaths, we want to focus on the effect of mitigation is really the number of new cases. And thats what were going to be thinking about and looking about. Clearly in the countries, china included, that have implemented very strict kinds of programs of mitigation, clearly it works and our own country weve seen indication of that in washington. Remember, Washington State was the first to get hit. But they put in a really good program of mitigation and if you look at the charts that dr. Birx showed the other day, theyre still down there, doing well. Let me be extremely clear about one point. We will move heaven and earth to safeguard our Great American citizens. We will continue to use every power, every authority, every single resource weve got to keep our people healthy, safe, secure, and to get this thing over with. We want to finish this war. We have to get back to work. We have to get we have to open our country again. We have to open our country again. We dont want to be doing this for months and months and months. Were going to open our country again. This country wasnt meant for this. Few were. Few were. But we have to open our country again and were going to be adding a tremendous amount of military to help supplement the states. The way were doing it now, having people apply for a loan, that adds friction. The same with the 1,200 stimulus checks. Its not that its a bad program. I would have done it a little differently. If you have a small or medium size business, we would cover all your checks and the fed would reimburse your local banks for anything that you bounce. That way, you could keep your employees employed, pay all your bills, pay your mortgage, pay your rent, pay utilities and things can continue somewhat at least as normal. Now with the programs designed the way they are, we dont know if theres enough money for this, we dont know if people are qualified for that. Thats how i would do it differently. Jesse i can see where youre coming from with that. Let me ask you more of a philosophical question. How does this virus change this society . I dont know, are people going to rush back into restaurants . Are they going to hop back into cabins in airplanes. Are they going to continue to live in cities .
