thursday morning in the capital city of kyiv. the battle for ukraine's independence now on day twenty one and this day, like so many others in the past three weeks, brings more horrific images of war homes destroyed, refugees on the run and civilians shot while waiting for food in mariupol, a theater providing shelter for hundreds of men, women and children suddenly rocked by a series of explosions. the number of casualties in that theater remains unclear, but russia's attack on innocent lives has left even hardened war veterans saying they have never seen anything like it. >> let's lviv ended and at this moment in key what was a 35 hour curfew is coming to an end giving residents there the chance to get out, survey the damage done to that city, stock up on provisions for what may be to come. they hope, of course, they will not see more missiles raining down on this city from russian forces today. but russians have been hitting out elsewhere in the southern city of mariupol. as you mentioned, a theater was bombed, a theater that ukrainian officials say was a shelter for hunde of civilians, including among them children. and we have seen satellite images in which the word children has been written on the ground very clearly outside of that , the theater building before the strike in an attempt to ward off obviously any strike from the russians, it clearly did not work. in the meantime, some very graphic and disturbing images from czerny that is a town just north of kyiv there. according to a tweet from the u.s. embassy here, russian troops opened fire on people who were simply standing in line to buy bread. we understand that at least 10 people were killed in that and president zelenskyy in his address to congress said that when you look at all of this , the world has to realize that this is not just an attack on the ukrainian people. this is not just an attack on the country of ukraine. this is an attack on the world. listen here to president other more important things that it needs to be focused. and the only thing i worry about that i mean, no concern about whether putin's called a war criminal out there will definitely be time to negotiate all those things. but the most important thing right now is that we need to end the war. and i think that the negotiations going on between ukraine and russia that need to take priority because first we need to get this war stopped. and i fear that if we demonize putin that may actually make that more complicated and i don't want anyone else done because we didn't make the negotiations perspective as possible. you talk about negotiations and i wonder if any of this matters. i mean, if putin says, okay, i'll stop the war tomorrow, but i want i want ukraine to give up crimea and the donbass regions and then declare neutrality and then i want some of the some of the sanctions lifted by the us . i mean, there's a real chance that the us might bite on part of that and forget about this whole war criminal thing to begin with . well, i mean, we also have to recognize i mean, russia is a permanent member of the u.n. and it's not like, you know, putin is going to be going to the hague any time soon. so there's very limited capability we have. but i think we have to worry about really the realm of the possible and not, you know, go after things that we would like to have but may not be able to get . we need to first stop the war and that's the most important thing. and whatever kind of deal that can be struck to to make sure that happens is something that should be produced pursued because whatever putin may want to do, his military has been so badly gassed he's not going to be in any position to do anything with , you know, any kind of reinvasion for probably a decade or more . and in the meantime, ukraine will continue to rearm itself and make itself defensible. >> and yet on the political front today, apparently russia was offended by the president's comments. they said this is the spokesperson for the kremlin saying quoting here we consider unaccept and unforgivable such rhetoric of the head of state whose bombs killed hundreds of thousands of people around the world. >> i mean, now they're offended . yeah, i mean this kind of predictable and that's like yeah. no kidding. you would say that . but then look what you're doing. i mean, you see the hospital, you see the, the theater here. you see all the things you're mentioning there. so there's not a lot of credibility to that argument. yeah. i want to play this is the sound bite from zelenskyy. we played a little bit of this with jonathan hunt and in the intro, but it was important it was impactful. i want to play some of the english part of zelenskyy speech today congress, the american people. he was calling out president biden. watch. you have the leader of the nation of the i wish you to be the leader of the world. being the leader of the world means to be he asking for there? >> of course i can only speculate, but he has been relentless in trying to get the no fly zone and trying to get jets and trying to get all kinds of things that we're not in a position to give or not willing to give . and look, i think we've got to just say the president his number one priority is to keep the united states safe and we have done enormous amounts i mean, gone overboard to a billion dollars just you know, within the recent days and another 13 billion dollars we have gone above and beyond to help. so i don't think we need to feel like we haven't done enough and president needs to make sure that we don't take any action that could actually get us drawn into the war. so i think he's dead right on that. and i understand zelenskyy position and what he's trying to get done. but we can't go too far. we have to take care of our people as well. but you have a lot of people on both sides of the island congress saying that more needs to be done and they
