So what the president is doing is taking action to help the job creators, the job holders on the job seekers and thats why you saw last weekend in the absence of congressional leadership and action the president took four measures to executive action that i think really helped people who were struggling to pay some of these bills. You dont have to pay Student Loan Debt for 2020, hes suspended the payroll tax, 400 extra for some families and of course hes taking these measures that are meaningful for people and protecting people from getting evicted. So the less than 1 million jobless claims for the first time in a while coupled with his historic agreement between israel and the e you eae all before noon and thats what happened here. There are some differences in how effective it is but when you look at the polls, 74 of americans according to this one support requiring everyone in the United States to wear a face mask when outside of their home. So many states and localities have taken on their part but ive been waiting with baited breath to hear what Kamala Harris and joe biden tell us to do as a Global Pandemic because if theyve got a great answer i dont want them to wait until november 4th. One thing we are doing is getting masks to these schools and allowing you to modify the work plan for those. All the while, we are trying to be of things safely. You had Kamala Harris yesterday criticizing the economy but the president is trying to open the economy up getting people back to work where is joe bidens only solution seems to be endless lockdowns which have consequences that the president laid out today. Overdoses, medical problems. Martha Kamala Harris did criticize a president and sort of sad, we gave him a great economy and then he drove it into the ground but she sort of skip to the whole part about the coronavirus in the middle there. And so my question would be, would she have not locked down the economy during the beginning of this virus . I think she would have and i think we had record Economic Growth before the tragedy of the virus in democrats and republicans alike. I think we need on dialogue on the substandard issues, not rhetoric. I was disappointed that Kamala Harris was as extreme as she was. We need to speak to the broader mass of the American People who want constructive action, not partisanship. And i would say to my friends in the Democratic Party and joe biden and Kamala Harris, talk about unifying the country, not partisan differences and not the blame game. She certainly has changed her tune since she ran for president about law order and Racial Justice and i would hope we democrats could strike a balance between reasonable policies and policies to redress Racial Injustice of the historic natu nature. I think what youve missed in the clips of both Governor Cuomo and phil murphy and frankly bill de blasio is that there is this amazing threshold that they have all met in the northeast which is they starve the virus and they tackled the curve, but what they also all said was that it is the first step. I think that ron desantis is an Governor Kemp had done in the south in the southwest, they had not reopened. But the second step in the northeast is to make sure that they have the safeguard in schools to ensure that the virus cant be spread. And i said this to you the last time i was on and the dilemma right now this week is that that Mitch Mcconnell has now left town for a month and the schools dont have the money. But what will the teachers do, the school say we want everybody back and the parents want to go back which the majority does at this point. Is there going to be a strike or will they say we are going to show up or . The teachers have set overwhelmingly 6 out of 10 in the last couple of polls are really looking to see what safeguards are going to be there and frankly what you are seeing is more and more places because they dont have the money for ppe and they dont have the monte to money for we are trying. But martha why are more independent schools and Charter School saying they are opening . They say that school is open and they want to go over here . We have just done a run of Charter Schools and there are many Charter Schools that are closed and going remote as our Public Schools. The real issue is, im glad that the president yesterday started talking about what we have been talking about since april and the experts and the cdc have been talking about since june which is you need to have mass and social distancing and cleaning and ventilation and it is really late for them to be starting. So what Governor Cuomo said that your clip didnt contain was said that you have to make sure the teachers and the parents feel safe and protected. The first thought which is getting im sorry, its hard to hear you. What we are seeing is that people are making different choices and obviously that puts pressure on different schools. Some are going to pot moving, and some are moving to homeschooling and it feels like there is recognition on the part of these politicians where if they dont get these Public Schools open, the Public Schools will end up suffering for having not opened. Do you think thats a problem for Public Schools right now . In the last gallup poll, i think the pandemic is a problem for children and educators and america. The thing we have to do more than anything else is contain the virus. Secondly i agree with you that remote education hasnt worked which is part of the reason why teachers have been rolling up their sleeves and their unions for months trying to figure that out. They say if the teachers and the unions are presenting these from opening from the end of the day since weve been at this since april and betsy devos hasnt talked to us, and they are finally in august talking about it . They say the democrats arent the ones are the ones that wont come to the table. We know that and we know the kids need it. Dr. Atlas, you know, theres a lot of talk about people who ignore science and people who respect science and i think, you know, whenever you go to the doctor about something serious you want to get several opinions but apparently your opinion is not welcome in some places. Its a great honor to be asked by the president to work with him and his team on the most important crisis relay that the country has faced, and probably 100 years not counting a world war. Let been at the highest levels of academic medicine for 25 years and combining my medical science, knowledge, expertise and Critical Thinking with my years in Health Policy i think is hoping to add something to what is really a great team. I think i feel most comfortable with it here because people are very datadriven and its a very focused strategy, a very thoughtful and tailored strategy on the key things of the policy should be focused on which is protecting the high risk people meeting mainly them elderly but others with comorbidities and making sure the hospitals arent overcrowded and of course safely reopening society including schools. So when we have to realize is that risk, for example in the College Football analogy, 99. 8 of those people are over 24 and its actually a very safe environment that sometimes, and for many, a safer and more regulated environment inside of the college. Theres only one child which is tragic of course, but theres only one child that was otherwise healthy out of all of those and its very low risk. Of course there are things that we are still learning, we dont know anything about every single disease. I know the data on studies on patients. This is all very important and we are still learning stuff but we dont deny what we know. Theres an overwhelming body of science here and if we had a half hour i would articulate a little bit more but basically, its frustrating to hear media talk about according to the data and then they act and say things that are completely contrary to the data. We have to use the data in this administration and everyone ive met here on the task force team, its very focused on the data, its a science driven policy. Its not a nondriven policy that some others espouse. Martha it seems to me that you want to listen to a lot of different experts across the board and having a difference of opinion it something that we should welcome and it gives us some perspective on these issues and thats why we have you come in and talk to us. What goes through your mind when you think back to that day on those upper decks watching the japanese dignitaries and the uss military leadership sign those surrender documents . Happy, happy, happy to see that. Martha what do you remember, tony, about watching them come out with the guys around you were saying and thinking and what was going through everybodys minds and hearts . Well, glad its over, you know . We want to go home. Thats about the size of it. Martha you know, i read in some of what you said that they gave all 3,000 of the members of the u. S. Navy a card to commemorate the fact that you were there, right . Yes. Martha you still have that, i assume . Yes, i carry it with me forever. Martha can you believe it was 75 years ago . In what you think about when you look back on those days . Well, it was a tough time, you know. The japanese were bad, actually very bad people, you know. But we came out on the good end of it, thats what counted. Martha where were you during the war on the ship . On the ship i was in the director that controls 5inch guns. Martha and where were you in the pacific . Tokyo. Well, actually, we operated about 100 miles offshore, 115 miles and the aircraft aircraft carriers sent in the planes and bomb to the japanese. They didnt let us asleep, they came over with planes at 40,000 feet and dropping all kinds of light, stuff that made light. You know, to see where we were. Martha and i know that made it hard to sleep. Right. Sleep at all. Martha i heard the same thing from some of the men who were on the islands, iwo jima and other places, that the lights were blinding and it made it almost impossible to sleep which of course was hard to come by anyway. Tim, when you think back on the 75th anniversary and i know you are going to be there for this really important commemoration in a few weeks, what goes through your mind . First of all, tony is very humble. The uss missouri took part. 99. 9 of the time, the uss missouri was involved in the invasion of iwo jima, covered the marines going in. I think of these men and how this is sense of relief overtook them that they would not have to be involved in the invasion of japan. And if japan was invaded and that was the plan up until dropping the atomic bombs, we are talking about a million plus american casualties, maybe 10 million japanese casualties. Japan being wiped off the face of the earth. So when i hear these veterans talk about world war ii, its tough to get stuff out of them but their feelings at that moment are really something that i always am interested in because there was that sense of relief on their part that, you know, this is age. The war is not going to end with a gunshot, its going to end with ceremonial pens being signed on the uss missouri and for the guys in the pacific that was important and for the guys in europe waiting to go to the pacific and have to face that whole situation after fighting in europe, there was just that as you said earlier, that sense of joy.
