Nancy pelosi in a very dramatic moment moved to condemn the president of the United States on the house floor. Prompting republican doug collins to yell back and to insist that her comment now be stricken from the record. Every Single Member of this institution, democratic and republican, should join us in condemning the president s racist tweets. To do anything less would be a shocking rejection of our values and a shameful abdication of our oath of office to protect the American People. I urge is going to give the speaker of the house if she would like to rephrase that, bearing ive cleared my remarks with the parliamentary before i read them. Martha just for some context here in this kind of condemnation on the floor of the house of representatives, you remember when ilhan omar was criticized for antisemitic remarks like this tweet in which she wrote that support for israel was all about the benjamins, baby. The house then basically folded on that condemnation. He argued about it for days. They chose, in the end, not to even name her per se, and lumped in her comments by coming out against all forms of hate speech. At the time, Speaker Pelosi reacted very differently to omars remarks. Its up to her to explain, what i do not believe that she understood the full weight of the words. Martha lets bring in jim jordans and i, member of the house judiciary and oversight committee. At what was it like on the floor tonight watching all of this play out . Democrats are going to stop. There are so focused on going after this president , so focused on getting to impeachment, i believe they are not going to stop at anything, even if it means breaking the rules on the house for where theres a certain level of decorum that you must maintain. At the speaker of the house didnt do that. Her words should have been taken down, should have been removed. Unfortunately what you end up doing, even though the parliamentary hearing world in mr. Collins forever, she just wanted of having to vote on the democrats all voted with her but they are solely focused on doing whatever they can to stop this president instead of frankly working on what can help the country. Martha she said she cleared her comments with the parliamentary. Obviously she didnt, but the parliamentarian would have told the person presiding over the house that her words were okay and we would have moved on. So obviously she didnt. Martha a president worked pretty hard to contain any potential republican defectors on this boat. Four of the members of the house that voted yes on this. We are going to put them up on the screen. Cumbersome and heard, congressman fitzpatrick, upton, and brooke. You voted no to this. Do you believe the president s comments were justified in that we . I think the president was expression the frustration that so Many Americans are feeling about whats going on at the border. Understand this, martha. It was just a couple months ago when the president said this is a crisis and all the democrats said no its not, if manufactured, its contrived, and it wouldnt provide the money we needed to actually deal with the situation on the border. Then when the real crisis gets worse, the democrats say wait a minute, it is a crisis, but its your fault, mr. President , even though you asked us eight weeks ago, nine weeks ago, ten weeks ago, for help to deal with this, so the frustration he feels is frankly the same frustration the American People feel when they hear comments like abolish i. C. E. , abolish dhs, laws are immoral, noncitizens should vote. These Detention Centers are concentration camps. At the frustration he feels and i think the American People feel and he was expressing that i think in his statements over the weekend. Martha so the four women who call themselves the squad said yesterday we are not going to take the bait on any of this and get, you know, they seem to be spending a lot of time talking about this, although they say that they want to move on. They were on cbs died on the evening news with norah odonnell, lets take a look. Arent dealing with the biggest bully ive ever had to deal with in my lifetime and trying to push back on that and trying to do the job that we all have been sent here to do, which is centered around the people at home. This is a distraction. Do you feel enough republicans have spoken up against the president . Absolutely not. We just held a vote today. The normalization of it. These are the same people who said abolish i. C. E. , abolish the department of homeland security. I mean, these are the radical positions they have taken. These are the same individuals who have said that that detention facilities can deal with the influx of the amazing numbers weve seen on the border, they call these detention facilities concentration camps and were supposed to figure out a way to work with them . Its just difficult. Again, i keep using the word frustration, but i know i the people i have the privilege of representing, they dont understand why we cant come together and deal with the crisis thats on the border and not have the kind of language we hear from these four members of congress. Martha politically, is this fight really exactly where President Trump wants to be . Politics is all about contrast and these women are creating a heck of a lot of contrast for President Trump and for your party. President trump wants to be where the country is right now because of his leadership. Taxes cut, the economy growing at an unbelievable rate. Lowest on employment in 50 years, we are out of the iran deal, the embassy is in jerusalem, the hostages are home from north korea at a whole bunch of other things. Thats where the president wants to be and hes going to keep doing the things he told the American People he was going to do when he they elected him and that includes dealing with the border, that includes building the Border Security wall, fixing our salamat and dealing with this crisis that for weeks and weeks and weeks the democrats that was manufactured, it was fake, it wasnt real. Then it gets so bad, wait a minute, it is real, and it is your fault, mr. President even though weve done nothing to help you deal with it. If thats whats going on here and thats with the president is going to campaign on. Martha i want to ask you one question about Robert Muellers testimony, which has now been moved to next week. It is going to happen next week, is that your understanding . I think so. But i may come about, jerry nadler told me this is going to happen to a half months ago. Scheduled for next week. We will see. We are working on what we are going to ask them. We look forward to it and well see how it goes. Martha let me play something from devin nunes last night on sean hannity, watch this. I fear whats going on right now is that mueller is working with a lot of his staff who are back channeling to the democrats, so it is very possible that mueller is going to have a few little sound bites that are going to give the democrats exactly what they want. Martha he suggesting that Robert Mueller has been fed specific things to say that will allow democrats to sink their teeth into some of these phrases for impeachment proceedings or impeachment investigation. We will see. I guess it wouldnt surprise me if thats going on, but i dont know. Will just have to wait and see. Theres the one thing i do know though. The investigation, the attorney general of the United States has asked john durham to do, which is to get to the bottom of the origins of this entire thing, the spying that took place and everything else, that the investigation that counts, like the one im looking forward to. As we sort of laid out in the introduction, thank you for being here tonight, there have been sort of different chapters of the argument for impeachment and it almost seems like you get past one of them and it kind of falls to the wayside, but then theres another reason why this president needs to go, and quickly, according to the people who believe that. The latest one is that he makes racist comments. Is that an Impeachable Offense if thats what he did . I dont think so, if thats what he did, and i beasley people are going to debate and reasonably differ over the nature of those comments. But when you talk about impeachment, we are in a stage of our history where impeachment is becoming the tool of first resort as opposed to last resort. And, martha, you and i know that is not what the founding generation wanted, not what they intended, so we need to bring this back and have a debate, have a discussion, have a vote, but lets put the impeachment talk aside. We know theres not going to be a majority or even much less a super majority, in favor of the impeachment of the president of the United States, so they should march on. Martha what did you make of this note tonight . I think at least expressing themselves through this kind of resolution to me whether i would have voted in favor of it or not, make sense as opposed to lets start impeachment. So yeah, express or disapprobation or your approval as the case may be. Notice a lot of folks want boating. I think a lot of the elected members would like to see my just as ben said, lets move forward, lets talk about the real issues. Martha what you think about the National Conversation thats going on . I just wonder if somebody sort of had tuned out for several years and then turned on the television and heres the things that are being discussed in america right now, and heres the way that these democrats, not all democrats, but these democrats, feel about things like ice, feel about things like dhs, which was created to protect americans after 9 11, what do you think . Very deep divide, the kind of polarization that we just have not seen. We do not have the foreign enemy at war. We have threats from china, threats from russia and so forth. So we dont have a view of the dome a Unifying Force in heaven forbid that there be a 9 11, but i think we are a deeply divided country, but heres the good news, weve always been deeply divided. And we always will be deeply divided. I just wish the rhetoric were a little bit toned down. Martha i want to ask you one quick question before i let you go. You talked the other night about your involvement in the epstein case. Today information that came out that says that he was even when he was under basically house arrest he was allowed to go home and work during the day in the florida arrangement that he got that he was continuing these attacks during the time that he was under house arrest. I dont know. My role in that connection was simply limited to one thing, that the allegations that we had were state allegations and did not implicate at all federal interest. That was the state of the information that we had and also that alex acosta, who i think conducted himself honorably, but nonetheless, hes taken the position that he should step down, but in any event, lets see what these allegations are, and well find out. If i was running for president right now i would be channeling obamas optimism of america and contrasting it with the president pessimism and doing america somehow as as a pastoral scene from the gallant south, which most americans fear, so i think its time for whoever is running for president right now to start looking at obamas tapes, finding that voice, and if you dont have that voice, maybe its time to get off the stage. Obama is obvious that an iconic figure in the democratic part of it with the exception of joe biden, which are, people, the entire democratic field is running against his legacy. The reason they switched is because obama promised them hope and change and they got me there. They lost 200,000 manufacturing jobs on obama and bidens watch and barack obama actually said get used to it, those jobs arent coming back. 500,000 manufacturing jobs under donald trump, the lowest unemployment obama had 11 unemployment when he took over. Chris, the fact of the matter is that donald trump won the president ial election, that he won in the state that mark mentioned. I know its not by a margin that impresses you, but the matter of fact is that he won the electoral college. And thats the situation he also reached out to the socalled forgotten americans who came out and voted in a way that they had not in a long time and some of them did vote for president obama and then they switched over and voted for President Trump. Those are all facts. Thats not an exaggeration. Theres nothing inaccurate about that. I want to play this from joe biden this morning. Because he is trying very hard to be the legacy to president obama despite the fact that president obama has chosen so far not to endorse him or come out in support of him. A bee that will come down the road. Heres joe biden this morning. A lot of people want to know about your relationship with president obama. Are you in contact . You worked with him for eight years. You were buds. Why no endorsement . Because ive asked him not to do that. I dont want to put him in that spot. And i want to earn this on my own. This is not a third term of obama. The world has changed. Its different. We have the same value set, hand eye, and i dont think we give him enough credit. Hes a guy that our kids can look up to and they did look up to. Martha heres my question for you, chris, when you talked a moment ago about someone taking that mantle, someone speaking that way, someone being eloquent talking about hope and change, is joe biden the person that jumps into your mind when you imagine that legacy . Hes not. I will be honest with you i dont know, you might still have a chance to be president of the United States, but im not seeing it the last couple of weeks. He needs to turn things around in a dramatic way between now and september. If he doesnt, hes done. Martha mark, what do you think . I think youre right, chris, that joe biden is not picking up the obama mantle, but is the only one carrying the obama policy mantle. Democratic party has gone so far left. Remember when barack obama said during his state of the Union Address that it is absolutely false that Illegal Immigrants will get health care under my plan and joe wilson stood up and said you lie. And he apologized for that, he shouldnt have done that, but guess what, hes been vindicate vindicated. Yeah, okay. Martha they said they will health care to illegal aliens. Illegal aliens had health care right now when i go to the emergency room. We have to find a realistic way to pay for it and stop this nonsense that we are not paying for it. We are american, we dont deny character people are sick and dying in hospital. He could just put them on a plan. Martha thats clear. That is the democratic platform right now. What goes through your mind when you hear that, when all the candidates sort of do their moment where they are speaking spanish, what do you think . I cringe. [laughs] martha anybody else cringe when that happens . Especially cory booker. I love the effort, but you could do a better job. I could teach them. Martha would you rather they not do it and just speak english to everyone in america where do you think it serves a purpose . If they didnt have the intent that they had i feel that it would be it would be a lot more appealing to people, but the problem is and will cory booker, hes my senator, beto orourke and julian castro, theyre all doing this bipartisan hackery. A lot of them are doing it just to tell them vote democrat, we can members. Out of nowhere comes to politics its a lot more than trying to relate to people at an identity level. A lot of its down to the actual issues like what we are concerned about the most was about immigration or the economy or jobs because its not just immigration that hispanics care about. Martha absolutely not. I think with every generation, as more people, more groups of immigrants over the course of history become more and more active in politics and more established in the country, obviously you care about everything, right . What do you care the most about . What i care the most about right now with be what were doing with families. I will say i will be that person with that voice about keeping families together. I live in an area of eastern long island that is basically fueled by immigrant labor. It is what it is, the beauty of it is, the parent is that it is because of the immigrant labor that has been there for a number of generations and yesterday we were hoping to different families that were both the focus of the raids that happened yesterday in our area. Those were not hardened criminals, that was a father and a daughter and a mother and her daughter, two separate families that did not even know if they had a removal order and therefore they were the ones that were the subject of this particular raid. That is not a hardened criminal, that is something that shouldnt be happening. Martha whether taken away . They were not taken away. They actually have been heeding the advice of many advocates in our area, which was to not answer the door, and they in fact right now are safe someplace and we are going to make sure that they remain so. Im a retired Police Officer, so we dealt with issues and for the most part immigrants are here to work and to maintain and do jobs that in reality a lot of americans wont do. But in that mixture their culture sometimes doesnt mix with hours and they dont really have any other family, so they tend to almost fight with themselves and some alcohol because they are lonely, they are away from their families and the kind of lens sometimes to alcohol and to working six, seven days a week and then when they get a free time, sometimes trouble happens and Police Officers and other people really dont understand the difference in that culture. It martha so youre saying that the pattern as a Police Officer that you saw with some of the recent immigrants . Correct. Martha what goes through your mind when you hear this conversation . Im a teacher in an urban district and i see something different. I get to see the children and the parents and i guess see a little bit of everything. You cant really generalize. But i see people that come to work hard, they come with that American Dream and they come seeking refuge and i just see a different picture. Martha let me just ask you, did the rate actually come, did someone bang on the door and try to get them to come out . Yes. Yes, the rate happened in southhampton and bridgehampton and east hampton and riverhead. And i do want to kind of echo a sentiment, because we get to work a lot i get to work a lot directly with Law Enforcement and actually really love it so we get to do latino diversity training with Law Enforcement that essentially is just keeping a dialogue going so that some of the stereotypes are some of the myths that we can break on both sides so latinos dont want to look at Law Enforcement a particular way thats only negative. We want to break those kinds of barriers. What i do see though is that a lot of times Law Enforcement, when youre doing that job, youre encountering people often times in crisis and not at their best so i think with education i think other aspects of our community, the face that our community has, catholic masses are 600, 700 people strong in spanish, so what we are working also with our latino youth leadership, these are folks, weve got 45 latino student body across our 20 plus east and district. They are valedictorians, solutes dorians. They are leaders so we see a lot of that as well. Theres definitely crisis, but thats why we Work Together on that. Martha so a lot of attention on alexandria ocasiocortez. Shes from new york. What do you think about when you hear what shes saying, do you feel like she speaks for you . No, absolutely not. Because the problem is, especially with the Democratic Party, a lot of them feel that they are entitled to any nonwhite book that they can get, especially latinos and latinos of course, theres going to be 32 million registered voters this year. Thats a lot. And to think that all hispanics think the same is just ridiculous. People from puerto rico tend to vote more democrat, people from cuba and venezuela tend to vote more republican and a lot of that is because they understand what socialism is. They understand what aoc and Bernie Sanders socialist policies are to the highest extent and office but they dont want a repeat of that in the United States and i feel the exact same way. Martha what do you think my parents are cuban, they came from a first generation and i kind kind of feel the same w. I find that the democrats are leaning too far to the left and that something that bothers me and although i grew up a republican, because when youre cuban, martha it youre usually a republican. Thats really ingrained. As i got older i became more of an independent and right now im leaning more towards the democrats. Martha would you like . I feel that aocs trump reelection committee. Thats what i fear. Right now i really dont have one person, maybe biden, but theres just so many candidates, so many issues that i feel that i feel like i have to give it one time.
