Momentous battle began. From across the earth americans are drawn to this place as though it were a part of our very soul. We come not only because of what they did here, we come because of who they were. They were young men with their entire lives before them. They were fathers who would never meet their infant sons and daughters. They had a job to do. With god as their witness they were going to get it done. More powerful than the strength of american arms was the strength of american hearts. These men ran through the fires of hell, moved by a forced no weapon could destroy. The fierce patriotism of a free, proud, and sovereign people. Martha those heroes the president spoke up today were led by general dwight d. Eisenhower, commander of the allied forces were nine years later would become president of the united states. He was the architect of dday, bearing the weight of the world on his shoulders at that moment as he led hundred and 50,000 allied soldiers to a victory over hitlers march towards word dominance, turning the tide of d history. Soldiers, sailors and airmen of the expeditionary force. You are about to embark upon the great crusade towards which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave allies and brothers in arms on other fronts you will bring about the destruction of the german war machine. The elimination of tyranny over the oppressed people of europe and security for ourselves in a free world. Martha today has granddaughter susan and i walked in the cemetery high above omaha beach come here she is. I was curious what goes through your mind when you look out at the sea and do you think of where your grandfather was at this moment 75 years ago . At this very moment he was back at headquarters and ironically after making the enormous decision to take a gamble on the weather, there was nothing he could do after that. It was in the hands of the people who had been welltrained in their commanders and he stayed in close touch with everybody who was coming ashore. There is another interesting aspect too, he had received a terrible assessment about the potential fatalities of the paratroopers and he had to make that terrible decision to deploy them anyway. We wouldnt have gotten off utah beach if he had taken that decision. Martha incredible. Youve done so much work on policy over the years and leadership. What lessons do take away from your grandfathers leadership that help you to explain what leadership means to others . I think there are obviously a range of different types of leaders, but he had almost a special capacity to both make really tough decisions and also to show heart while he was doing it. After he made that airborne decision he actually had the courage to go out and look those young guys in the eyes and wished him well knowing that for at least being told that he would be responsible for the loss of 50 of those troops. As it turned out the number was nothing like that. They did a remarkable job behind the beaches of utah which was essential for us making our objectives. Martha i always think that when i look at the photograph of him looking right into their eyes and talking to them before the Mission Began and you cant look at this photo without thinking about the fact that he knew that some of them would never make it through the day. That is the pain of warfare and that is the pain of being a commander, but its something that had to be done and i think he was quite fatalistic about making that decision. Somebody was going to have to make that decision and he understood it was going to be him. Martha he wrote his statement as if it went wrong. What he was going to say if the Mission Failed which we read last night on the program. Just a fact that he was thinking through all of those different scenarios and being ready for them. Good to be ready in case the worst happens, but i think he also wrote that dont form salt as well. He wasnt going to blame anybody else and i think whats rather ironic about that that he was taking responsibility even for the weather over which she had no control. He is right. He decided to go under those conditions so it would still be his responsibility. Martha obviously there is a very personal side of all of this to you. He was your grandfather and the wall street journal wrote a piece today that they released, your grandfather wrote a letter to his wife right before the Mission Began and he said i have a series of tricks i will be taking over the next few days that you may not be hearing from me. I would love for you to read this. I would be delighted. Darling starting tomorrow i have a series of trips that will last for six to ten days so if you have a lapse in letters dont jump to the conclusion i dont want to write, i simply have no opportunity to pick up a pen. The real purpose was to sam well and i love you as much as ever, day and night, your picture is in front of my task and i look at you all the time. Another is in my bedroom. Loads of love, always yours. He sent a number of these letters before a big campaign and in another letter similarly to this he said the weather is classified. Rightly so. He says its frustrating i cant give you or tell you whether the sun is out. Martha he looked back at this generation that would talk about what shape to think a country is in right now . With respect to the courage that was displayed here at normandy, we dont have the word selflessness and selfsacrifice in our vocabulary. If i were teaching in middle school class on the subject, i would say there was a time when people were called upon to do things they didnt necessarily want to do or could be spared to do. They reported for duty, they put their mesons in it and when they hit the beaches there were more than i ever thought they could be. Martha i love the end of what she said there. They discovered that in the end they were more than they thought they ever could be. That whole idea of selfsacrifice that was so evident during world war ii, you look in the eyes of these eat then young men, bret baier has been studying and writing about this period for a long time and he writes about dday in his upcoming book. Thank you for sticking around to talk to us about this this evening. Your thoughts on that period, when they are formulating the plan and there were a lot of different ideas on whether it should be normandy or whether the approach should be from somewhere else. First of all, great job over the past few days with long hours. Some amazing images of the stories that you are bringing to us. I looked at was a conference in tehran, november 1943 between fdr, winston churchill, and joseph stalin, the soviet leader and it was their first gettogether where they essentially planned dday and it was a lot of was a lot of back and forth. Stalin was really pushing for that to go forward, there was a lot of concern from churchill whether they could trust stalin and really buy into the soviets. The concern and fdrs concern was that the soviets could go the other way. That hitler could go towards the soviet union and somehow coopt their cooperation. There was a lot of back and forth in this tehran meeting, that laid the groundwork for the decision that was then put on general eisenhower. The agonizing of that decision, go, nogo on the weather and behind the scenes stories of getting people together at 3 30 in the morning and having each one make a decision, should we do it or not . It was eisenhower who had to make the final call and he said, we are going to go. Martha thats fascinating thinking about him in the middle of the night going over again and again and his mind and bringing them together and realizing that window was closing. The tides they depended on comedy low tides they want and for that landing was not going to be a window that was around and definitely to be sure and you have a fascinating take on it in your writing. When you look back now everything is in retrospect and i put myself in the current moment that we live in covering politics and covering what is going on in the world and you think about the tensions the escalation from china. You look at what is going on with iran and the real alignment of nations in many ways that we are witnessing and he does wonder what hell be like when we look back 20 years from now and look for example at china which clearly in this moment has an aspiration at world dominance. Think about this. As World Leaders are meeting there to commemorate a normandy dday at 75 years the chinese president was meeting with the russian leader. What that means for the big picture of things is really a big question as far as geopolitical threedimensional chess if you well. That is why todays speech i think for a President Trump was such a big deal. 30,000 feet, it was bigger, it met the moment. As i sat on special report earlier i think it was one of his best speeches if not the best and he has had some big ones at warsaw, poland, saudi arabia and a state of thee that was filled with rhetorical moments. History is going to look at big speeches as it looks back. In the lens of history speeches are big moments and this was a big moment for President Trump. Martha indeed it was. I agree when i was listening to it this afternoon its a very high bar. He look at the speeches that have happened in the spot and you think of president reagan and its an opportunity in these moments to speak to in his gaze, what does it mean to make America Great again . What kind of greatness are you talking about . That idea has been challenged and him and i think you laid it out today was very specific. Bret of the personal stories on the fact that you heard these Amazing Stories and then suddenly the person in the story was right behind him. It give you goose bumps at time times. Also the hat tip to the allies of the french and british for all the talk about the president being a bull on the china shop when it comes to european allies, it was focused on establishing that im a big hug from Emmanuel Macron was a big moment as well. Martha indeed it was. The president did an with piers morgan this week where he had a hat that looked like a churchill auntie got him to put it on for a split second. A funny moment. What you think about that . Bret listen, he is a fan of churchill, the fact that he got him to put that on is pretty good because usually you can get politicians to put on hats. Martha it was a split second. Great to see you tonight. Thank you for joining. We really appreciate it. Bret great job. Martha thank you. Still had tonight, the secretary of the army joins me as our coverage continues. Who are the next generation of war fighters and what weapons will they be using . 2020 democrats turn on joe biden over abortion. Joe biden said that he would not support repealing that method. Is he wrong . Yes. He is absolutely wrong on this. Perhaps he doesnt have all the facts. Martha former Vice President joe biden at odds with some of his field over his continued support of the Hyde Amendment which is a measure that fails by republicans because it prevents federal funding being used for abortion. His Campaign Says that he is open to the idea of repealing that law, but for now they say his position has not changed. Here now, the scholar at Fox News Contributor and ed riddell, the former chairman and pennsylvania governor. Great to have both of you with us. Let me start with you. What do you think joe biden should do . It sounds like he is on the fence here. Im a strong supporter of the repeal of the Hyde Amendment. I voted to support the platform. I think any time give a constitutional right to Supreme Court it shouldnt be denied because they cant afford it. I think the Vice President should take a look at this because the clinics are being closed in many southern and western states, poor women have no access towards abortion. I think that is their right and the constitution and i think in light of that i hope the Vice President does reassess this position. I am for joe biden regardless of whether i disagree with him because i dont think there is one other candidate would agree with on every issue. I think joe biden is a good man and i think youll be a great president. I hope he rethinks this. Martha what do you think . Politically as interesting when politicians leave the door open on this and he said quite clearly back in 2012 sound bites that we should before the break, it didnt line up with is faith and he doesnt believe that federal funds should be used for abortion but now he said he will consider being in favor of that repeal. What is the wiser move for him as a candidate . I think this controversy is great for joe biden because its his moment, we now know that with the exception of joe biden every democrat running for president supports taxpayerfunded abortion on demand up until the moment of birth. That is an extraordinary position because the fact is the majority of americans dont support that on demand up until the moment of birth. He is aligning himself with the majority of americans and the majority of democrats. 29 of americans who support taxpayer funding of 13 who support abortion on demand. Most americans look at a portion to some extent a Necessary Evil rather than celebrating it and they draw a line somewhere. They dont want to completely eliminate it but they want to put restrictions on it and the line joe biden has drawn which is reasonable for most americans, he doesnt want to pay for it. He took seriously a statement. He says if i personally oppose abortion then i should pay for it and i think most americans and democrats will see that as a reasonable period martha it raises aside from the moral issues it raises that interesting political question. Look at the polling in america it appears that the majority of americans are not where so many of these candidates are on this issue. Does it strengthen joe bidens hand to say no, actually i am on the side of 51 of americans. I think when planned parenthood was available in every state and had access to abortions for women who wanted it and its the constitutional right under the constitution and this court hasnt changed that. I think most americans realize that that right should be given on your ability to pay. It is changing. If the are changing. A good elected official always has a viewpoint and that viewpoint can be changed by circumstance. I would urge them to look at the circumstances, in one state there are no clinics anymore so what does a poor women to do if she wants to exercise her constitutional right . Martha what do you about that . This is going to actually help joe biden with winning over workingclass voters which is what the Democratic Party has to do. Again, the American People dont look at it first of all the Supreme Court hasnt said its a constitutional right abortion on demand. The Supreme Court said you can have you are wrong. The Supreme Court has said that you can have restrictions on abortion and so joe biden is proposing a reasonable restriction. His job as a running for president is to try to win back those obama biden voters in your state and states like ohio and michigan that defected to donald trump and those people are pretty socially conservative. They dont support abortion on demand. The Democratic Party is putting themselves in a bad position by taking such an extremist view on abortion and joe biden is dialing that back a little back. Its like the controversy that he is going to be excommunicated for that shows the extremism with the party. Absolutely disagree. Martha go ahead. I disagree with that. Most democrats take the position i take even if you disagree with joe on this issue. Again, one of those 25 candidates that i would check the box with every issue with and that is a reasonable approach and joe biden would make a great president. We may disagree on this issue but i am still for him and im still for him of the vast majority of democrats are him right now. Martha is easy to imagine how this plays out on the debate stage and before it comes to that moment the former Vice President will have to decide where he is on this topic and whether or not he wants to put the stake in the ground as a purely political perspective, you would encourage him to do that or whether he will stand up there and say, i thought about it lets take a look at what he said. Watch this. Will you commit to abolishing the Hyde Amendment which hurts poor woman and women of color . Yes. Right now it can stay. Martha you can see the discomfort in that moment. He said he misunderstood the question. She tell mckeith that she was asking about mexico city. The democratic construction for catholics like joe biden who should be anticatholic by their faith should be completely prolife, but in his position, i personally oppose it but im not for imposing my views. He actually believes that. Good for him for at least coming that far. Martha thank you. Great to see you both tonight. Thank you. Coming up right here from paris this evening, the dday address getting some praise in some unlikely places today. Lara trump joins me next on that. She is on the campaign right after this. Martha president attributed to dday scene has a strong speech by many who watched it today and commented on it. Even some of the toughest critics. Watch list. President donald j. Trump delivering what i believe is most powerful speech that he has given as president of united states. His speech itself was very good. It measured up to the moment. That really was a true salute to the unity of this day. He did the right thing at normandy. He really hit all the right moments in that speech. I think this is perhaps the most on message moment of his presidency today. Martha the praise come submit some numbers that are not that great and they knew polling we are seeing. The president is about 12 points behind joe biden and Bernie Sanders and michigan, a state he won by only 10,000 votes over Hillary Clinton and 2016. Joining me now, Senior Campaign advisor lara trump. Good to see you tonight and thank you for being with us. The first thing i would like to ask you about is the reaction that we heard from Joe Scarborough and others who generally can find something negative to say even when there are positive things to say. Why do you think they struck a very different tune today . I would love to know that and wouldnt it be nice if we could always have this positivity around this president. Really uniting all of us as americans and really the world, the allies we have around the world today. Britain and france who fought alongside our great soldiers and world war ii were there on dda dday. It was such an incredible speech. It was hard to watch that speech without tearing up several times. I am almost seven months pregnant but i think most people who watched it obviously felt the emotion and faulty gravity of the day and his words were spot on. Martha there was an extraordinary amount of emotion across the board and i do think its interesting to hear the comments of those folks and i wonder, clearly he wanted to give a great speech today and its not about politics in that moment its about honoring those heroes. Do you think that he is making an effort to be sort of, to win over some people who perhaps have seen his behavior as something that they might say is nonpresident ial, is there an effort . I dont know if i would say that. Donald trump is donald trump, he is a very genuine person, but being the president is something that no one gives you a handbook and says this is how you do it. He has never been a politician and he is figuring it out all along the way. I think it was very clear how passionate he is about our country and how passionate he has about veterans and those people without giving their lives, we probably wouldnt be here today. I think that may be what is shown through there. He is certainly figuring it out every day and he will get better and better at it. Martha it was very interesting to watch him with macron, someone he has had differences with over time. They seem to be doing very well together. I think its also beneficial to macron and his environment to treat President Trump in a more open way. The poles i mentioned at the top, i want to take a look at these because obviously its vea look at michigan and texas where the president is under joe biden, 48 , trump is at 44 . Thats unusual. Just said that. Its very early. The election is not tomorrow. There is a lot to happen between now and then. Who even knows if joe biden will be the democrat who runs against donald trump in 2020. We dont know who it will be ye yet. I always say this, theyve never been accurate when it comes to donald trump, even days before the election and 2016 we started Hillary Clinton up by huge margin and donald trump still won. We still feel very confident here at the campaign and we are looking forward to the debate as we can get a handle on who might be his opponent. Martha that will be very interesting. A very strong day in normandy for the president. Always good to see you. Thank you for coming in. See you soon. Coming up next, and update on the awful training accident that killed a west point cadet today. We were out there speaking with the secretary of the army. As a next generation going to step up the way that the greatest generation dead . We will give you an update on what happened with west point and my interview after this. What did i do to prepare themselves . What was their equipment . We can capture those same qualities and make sure that our futures shoulders embrace those attributes i couldnt have asked for better parents, but like most people they didnt have anyone to teach them the best financial habits. So we changed that. As a Financial Health coach, i help people every day. I try to put myself in their shoes from my own experience. I connect to them because ive been there. Helping families like mine save a little money changes everything. This is personalized guidance. This is wells fargo. I dont know. Our relationship is just kinda boring. Uhm, youre not alone. I used to have a limited selection of shows ondemand. And let me tell you, it got very boring. I got directv last week and they have more than 50,000 titles to choose from. But what about my problems . Classic narcissist. What was that . Nothing. Tv without thousands of titles on demand is just kinda tv. Dont just kinda tv. Directv. Sign up for directv and get hbo included for a year. Call 1. 800. Directv. But allstate actually helps you drive safely. With drivewise. It lets you know when you go too fast. And brake too hard. With feedback to help you drive safer. Giving you the power to actually lower your cost. Unfortunately, it cant do anything about that. Now that you know the truth. Are you in good hands . Martha a tragic story out of west point. One cadet was killed and at least 21 were injured in a cras crash. They say the vehicle overturned near the national bridge training site in new york. The cadets involved were seniors with the class of 2020. No word yet on the cause of this crash. This week we follow the lifechanging journey of world war ii veteran jack gutman as he returned to normandy for the First Time Since he served on dday as he looked upon the rows of white crosses he saluted and he wept for those he served alongside. The man he wished he could have saved. It was one of the many moving moments as our nation pays tribute to the brotherhood of selfless, humble and incredibly brave man who rested all for us. Jack is one of them. I wrote a piece about him that is posted on foxnews. Com. I hope youll take a look at it. Earlier today i spoke exclusively with the secretary of the army about what this day means for him and the soldiers of today. I should venture that at this point we were not aware of the accident. Lets watch. People talk on this occasion about the greatest generation and the qualities that they had come of the humility, the patriotism. How do you compare that to what we have seen . Should people be discouraged . People should be encouraged. Obviously that generation sets a very high benchmark that we will remember today and forever what they did on dday and throughout the world were. The men and women we have coming into the army are also fantastic. I like to call them the elite 1 , the 1 who decides to raise their right hand and protect the other 9010 of us. I have a lot of faith in them martha we assess a test like that a lot of americans arent eligible because they are overweight or the level of education. Those numbers really shocked a lot of people. 71 are not eligible. You are right. 71 percent dont qualify for physical, behavioral, intellectual reasons. If you ask was qualified, its less than 4 . Its really alarming for me and im concerned about the trends and a big part of it is that more and more of todays youth dont grow up with parents, uncles, aunts serving in the military which is different than my generation. That has a big impact on our future as well. Martha and terms of weapons we have seen a new missile from russia that was being tested and shown off the other day. What goes through your mind when you see that . I know we have to be prepared to fight. Possibly the russians and the chinese and one of my biggest concerns these days is at the weapons and equipment we are using today are the same weapons we used when i joined the army out of the academy in 1986. We need to go to a new system of weapons. They have outlined six parties that begin with longrange precision fires down to number six. The big number five is five is integrated air missile defense. We need the capability to defend against russian cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, you name it to protect our troops on the battlefield. Martha we are hearing about this hypersonic missiles. What are they . They have a tremendous capability, they are launched beyond a space they can fly a greater distance skipping across the atmosphere and maneuvering along the way. They can hit an impact with incredible speed and velocity so it creates greater damage by the impact alone and because they can maneuver they are difficult to defend against. The good news is through three services have gone together and are working together on her own hypersonic systems that we would each employee. The army is aiming to develop the first one in the next few years and it will provide us a great capability against adversaries such as russia and china. Martha are they working on the same weapons . They are working on it. We are reluctant to say what they are working on but i assure you we are ready and we we wilt there first. Martha you are part of the 101 anniversary, the paratroopers the night before dday and some of them we met h. While coaster your mind as you think about this 75th anniversary they are the greatest generation and i feel privileged to come i served in the 82nd over here in europe and the 29th infantry in the national guard. They are the ones with the First Division that stormed the beach. When you walk these grounds and you talk to some of the old soldiers that are here, it lifts your spirits. You know what these young men dead and how they sacrificed, they climb to the cliffs where i was yesterday, they pair a trip like i said, amidst gunfire and uncertainty. It stirs your soul. What i do is look back and look at what did they do to prepare themselves . How did they train . I think about how we train the army and we can capture those same qualities to make sure our future soldiers can really embrace those attributes that they had. Martha we had such a crosssection of america that served in world war ii and there was a draft then of course. Do you think we will ever have a draft again . It is hard to see. You have exceptional volunteers and they give us a great deal of diversity in these young men and Women Joining the military are fantastic. I believe they will be ready when the time comes. The army right now is very capable. We continue to grow the army because we need to put capabilities back into it and we need to add capabilities. We are ready. We will be ready in the future as well. Martha thank you very much. Good to see you. You wouldnt accept an incomplete job from any one else. Why accept it from your allergy pills . Flonase sensimist relieves all your worst symptoms, including nasal congestion, which most pills dont. And all from a gentle mist you can barely feel. Flonase sensimist. Thats why esurance has this drivesense® app. The safer you drive, the more you save. Dont worry, im not using my phone and talking to a camera while driving. Im being towed. By the way, im actually a safe driver. Im just pretending to be a not safe driver. Cool. Bye dennis quaid when insurance is affordable, its surprisingly painless. Our whole site here was shaking when these plans just orbit over where we are and as u and it gives you a sense of what it sounded like for these villagers and friends nearby when these american planes started soaring over through the skies and a lot of the people i talk to you talk about loud war is. That was a chilling moment this morning as the flyover was one of the incredible moments of our coverage. It all began three days ago with the actors from the hit show band of brothers, so many people have watched and many people were so moved in the series that they worked so hard, they traveled to normandy to pay tribute to the men who actually did it. Heres a look back. This goes above and beyond anything we have ever done. Its important to keep carrying the torch. The character i played, he passed away two years before we shot. Everything is right where it should be. I met the families for the first time and he is the grand son and we are best friends and the connection to the family is just so huge. You cannot help but get emotional every time we see each other. It was great. It made the whole thing makes sense. He was picturing not only a real man but a man very special to the others. We were so proud. I call him my brother. He is one of us. All of this done. I need the passport to go back to france, 75 years ago i did need a passport. They let me in. I have people coming up and hugging me and running to meet me and take pictures of me and it was like euphoria. I went to the gravesites and walked to the graves and emotion took over. I broke down. I said when i was there, i will salute them and i cried. I did all of those things that i said i would do. Martha one of the Main Attractions here today is a man named tom wright, he has 97 years old and he has jumped every year for the past six years to remember those who were lost and to make sure that everyone remembers the sacrifice that was made on that day. What were you thinking about . My body was in one place and my mind was then another. I will keep on going. Im not a dead man walking yet. Today we express our undying gratitude.
