But look at this, here he is when there were similar requests made to release all of the documents in the lewinskyclinton case. It is grand jury material. It represents statements which may or may not be true by various witnesses. Salacious material, all kinds of material that would be unfair to release. Martha those documents ultimately came out, and there was a lot of a lot of back and forth tension over that, so will these subpoenas were . Here is the judge. There are some things in there that the attorney general, under the law, cannot legally release. And that is called he will hear this all over the place the next three weeks 6d. 6d is a section of the criminalist procedure which says that the government has materials about a person who is not being charged, you cant release them. Martha a lot of people fall into that category, and in moments, republican congressman ratcliff. Eric swallowed joined us once again, demanding the unredacted Mueller Report, he sits on the House Judiciary Committee and intelligence committees. This is jim comey, former fbi director, talking this afternoon on cnn about the release of the report on the timing of the whole thing. Watch those. Bill barr, attorney general, deserves the benefit of the doubt. Give him a chance to show us what he feels like he can show us. I have to imagine former director mueller wrote the report with an eye toward it being public someday, so i cane cut out of it, but lets wait and see. The attorney general deserves that chance. Martha you agree with that . We want to make sure we see the full report as soon as possible. We are going to authorize subpoenas but not issue the subpoena, but congress voted just a month ago, 4200 in a bipartisan fashion, for us to see the full report. Also, the public paid for this investigation, they should see the full report, and the person who is fully exonerated should welcome us seeing the report. Martha i think pretty much everybody has said, but i think the full report definition is different for different people based on the grand jury testimony, some of the parts of the report that might reflect on people who do not have any there is no reason for them to be put out there, publicly, by this report. You agree agree with those exemptions . Yes, if there is no reason for the public to know about someones cooperation, i agree. But what i dont agree is the grand jury information should shield important, relevant witnesses from having their information out there. Martha who are they . What would you be disappointed not to get . Who do you want to read more about in terms of the background documents i know you want . Every person who met in the trump tower meetings, the trump tower moscow negotiations, any person who knew about the wikileaks effort to hack and release the Hillary Clinton emails. And any person who knew about the actions of the administrations taken. Martha thats what i thought. Even though it appears that there was no collusion, according to the summary of the principal conclusions that we got from mr. Barr, you still think that is valid ground. In the latter, he said it is obvious that there was outrage, but there was no conspiracy, and there was no coordination, but that is not enough for you . No, because that relates to a criminal matter, not National Security, counterintelligence matters. Waiver responsibility to protect the ballot box in 2020 from another attack, and the public should know in the nations leaders should know who work with the russians, what the government response martha the report says they did not work with the russian spirit the barr opinion letter said that i didnt reach the standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. There is what we have already seen in public, and we can washed out a way because the president wasnt criminally indicted, but i imagine there will be Additional Information that will guide us as we seek to protect the ballot box. I will accept every word, every period, every comma, but im not going to accept that i cant see it on the president martha he said 15 days from our last. I dont know why there is this tomorrow date, it sounds like youre not going to issue subpoenas tomorrow, correct . Where going to authorize subpoenas tomorrow, continue to work, but the public should see a report that it paid for, and we should know, as our nations leaders, what we can do to protect democracy. Are you announcing for the presidency in two weeks to run . I did not say that, but i will tell you have made every decision, and theres a reason i care so much about what the russians did is because they didnt do it just to benefit themselves from a transactional relationship with the president. And they did it to tear down the idea of america, no matter who you are aware you from, what you worship, who you love, you can be anything. If i can be true in america, it can be true in russia. They dont want it, i want to protect it here in america. Martha i think youre going to do well on that, everyone is on the same page. Nobody wants the russians to be able to influence our election or anything, and one of the people who work with the cia for 30 years said the dossier looked like a classic kremlin disInformation Campaign. I hope youre going to pursue that side of it when you get all of the documents, as well. Im still trying to figure out what is worse, last week i heard adam schiff, chairman of the house intelligence committee, demand that bill barr release the full report without reactions are classified National Security information. This week, i am hearing the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, jerrold nadler, demand that bill barr again violate the law with regard to 6e information and others, the theater of the absurd. Bill barr isnt going to comply with the democrats deadline because he cant comply with it, because he would have to violate the law, he would have to commit crimes to do that. What he is complying with is the law as it is written. He is complying with special counsel regulation, fully complied with it already, now he is going to go further and provide more information than the law requires. Martha a couple of things were interesting in what congressmans well said, he refers to the barr letter as the barr opinion letter. That was not my take away when i read it, it didnt seem like there was a lot of opinion intent, it seemed as if he was summarizing the principal conclusions. He said it still is a work in progress, they were still going through everything, and he laid out the conclusions, as i would imagine, as Robert Mueller did in the report. Do you think there is concern are you concerned that when the rest of this report does come out, which i believe it will, that there is going to be a lot of daylight between these taco takes . Im not concerned about that at home because bill barr is not going to bed his 40 year legal career on misinforming the public. Bill barr followed the regulation to a t, a regulation for the special counsel that ironically, jerry nadler supported. After the star investigation. Jerry nadler was one of the ones that wanted the end of pension t counsel bill barr followed completely and intends to do more. Martha do you want the report, as much as possible to come out . To support that . Do you want everyone to see what they paid for . That is a false argument about what they paid for. In the American People pay for every bit of classified information that we have in this country. They dont get to see all of it. There are reasons that we protect classified information, reasons we protect grand jury information martha theres a lot of interest in this matter because weve been hearing about it for two years and they would like to see, to the greatest extent possible, what all that was about. I would too. To that point, that is what bill barr promised, and as you pointed out, that is what he is doing. He is providing everything as quickly as possible, with the only redaction, the things that the law says he cannot provide to the American People. And if he could provide them, he probably would. Martha i want your thoughts on one more thing. It is clear what congressman swan well and others want, they want to see the grand jury testimony with regards to donald trump jr. , everyone who was in the room, as he said. What does that tell you about where they are still going with this, politically . It tells me it is politically motivated. They have no good faith basis to ask for that information. The law does not allow for it. The department of justice does not ever provide that information. They wanted for political gain. They have been promising information on collusion between donald trump and the russians, bob muellers conclusions, as summarized by bill barr, reflected that that did not take place. That should be the end of these investigations. To the extent they want to continue them, they are underscoring that they are simply politically motivated. They want information that will be helpful to prevent donald trump from being reelected in 2020, that is what this is about. Martha congressman, thank you very much. I dont think ill four of them, rod rosenstein, sally of commander mccabe, james comey, will have the same story of who is culpable in that, and they will be leverage for testimonies that are selfserving, the same way mueller did with Michael Flynn or his son. E. , abolish electoral come all of these issues were not 51 issues, and when you add to that toxic mix, the antiwhite male sort of narrative that you dont want a white male, and then the polls show the three leading candidates martha all fall into that category. That is a lot there, and there are a couple of things i want to drill down on. You mentioned john brennan, and the possibility of his involvement, and i want to point out, there are two main venues for the kind of turning the tables you talk about it. One is the inspector general, Michael Horowitz at that apartment of justice who is looking into this. The other is graham, now the head of the Senate Judiciary committee, who is also overseeing the investigation into this side of the equation, because if it wasnt conclusion, and you look at all of the moving parts of this, the fisa application, all of it, the George Papadopoulos issue, what you just brought up, why did all of that happen . What started it, what was the catalyst to start all of that . Those are going to be the subjects of those two investigations. But john brennan really stuck his neck out on this story, and heres an example of what he said right before the report or barr letter came out, and right after. Lets watch. I wouldnt be surprised, for example this week on friday, not knowing anything about it, but friday is the day the grand jury indictments come down. I think i suspected there was more than there actually was. Martha hmm. The nations former director of cia pontificating on his inside sources that were entirely bogus, and it puts into question his prior statements and analysises. He is someone who said he didnt know anything about the dossier. He said in may 19 2017, but we know he talked to harry reid about it, and we know he was help in gathering foreign intelligence people to work with the fbi in terms of George Papadopoulos interrogations, inform and into the trump campaign. We have kind of woken up out of a slumber, like rip van winkle, and said wow, we had a Foreign National tampering with a u. S. Campaign, and this continued first to thwart the presidency, then they transition excuse me, the campaign, the transition, then the presidency. That matters, ed rendell is right, this is a wideopen contest, but fundraising matters in terms of being able to make it through the democrat convention, and the more bernie is there, the more he will push the party further to the left and the more of a challenge it will be to be donald trump. You know, i got to say i dont think Mike Bloomberg has any real staying power. This is the Democratic Party of 2019, if youre a billionaire, successful in business, there is no place for you. Martha for any reporter to hear you had all this time for her in the last six months of her life, and she really shared so many intimate details and brandnew stories no one had heard before. What was that like for you . It was a privilege. When i started the book, i didnt know if she would cooperate, she agreed to one interview, then a second, then a third, five in all. We scheduled a sixth, and she fell the night before i was on my way, never recovered, but five interviews, and access to her personal diaries, which was just an extraordinary gift to someone who wanted some insight into her life and her time. Martha did she write in the diaries every day . What kind of diarist was she . Sometimes every day, every week, and sometimes not at all. They had never been read by anybody but the author of the biography of george h. W. Bush. The pages stuck together, put in the wrong order, i would open up and find a letter she had written to herself, it was the kind of thing that you wish for when you are doing this. Martha absolutely, you get lost and juicy stories in there. Theres the two of you together in one of the interviews. She talked about her contentious relationship with nancy reagan, crossed of the bushes off the list for the party, as you said, the event of that time. Princess diana and charles coming to the white house, she crossed off the bushes . I heard you crossed off the bushes, and they had not been invited to this, but then i had a researcher go and find the guest list in the Reagan Library archives where you see the president and mrs. Reagan, second line Vice President and mrs. Bush crossed out, and an aide someone who knows says that they called nancy reagan and said you cant not invite the Vice President of the United States. And she said watch me. Martha why . Why did she dislike her so much . Im sure nancy reagan has a story, her own point of view, but from Barbara Bushs point of view, nancy reagan just disliked her from the getgo. They were almost exactly the same age, went to the same college, but they were so different in their priorities and their character. Martha thats it. I find that incredible. That is when you think, was the root of the animosity. They both adore their husbands, and their husbands ran against each other. Martha my husband is better than yours, i love my husband more than you do. Deep depression that she remembers, that she was open about with you. In 1976, her husband went on a job she said not to take it, and suddenly he couldnt share things with her. She was going through menopause, she had an empty nest at home, kids away at school or young adults growing up, and she fell into a depression so dark that she told me she would have to pull off the side of the road because she had this urge to plow her car into a tree or into the path of an oncoming car, to kill herself, and to not do that, she would stop the car and wait. Martha she gave a lot of advice to her son, and at one point he said, thats enough, mom. On the iraq war. President bush 41 said he would not meddle in bush 43s administration, and mostly he didnt. Barbara bush made no such promise to her son, and she spoke up, she spoke up about the iraq war, said it was a mistake, a mistake to listen to the Vice President and defense secretary, and george w. Bush finally said, on the president then you have to trust me, and she backed off. Martha i got to go, but very quickly, she said she would not consider herself a republican at the end of her life. Extraordinary from a woman who had been the face of the Republican Party for decades. Thats what she said. Because of President Trump. Martha susan page, fascinating book. Martha shocking story out of florida tonight, a Chinese National illegally entered maralago and has now been arrested. Authorities say she made it in, lying to the secret service. A Maralago Club manager thought she was related to a member and allowed her into the main reception area, but one another secret Service Agent approached her, zhang changed her story coming traveled from shanghai to attend a United Nations friendship event, and somebody on chinese social media told her to attend the event and speak with a member of President Trumps family about chineseamerican economic relations. When she was told there was no such event, she apparently got verbally abusive and was escorted off the property and taken into custody. Court documents say zhang was carrying four cell phone, a laptop computer, an external hard drive, and a thumb drive containing computer malware, short for malicious software, often used to steal from encrypt, or delete sensitive data. There is no evidence she had an enough nefarious motives, but experts say she did have the tools to target certain electronic devices. The reason that the democrats gave they say the number of people crossing illegally who are caught today is far less than it was in the mid2000s. Back then there were a Million People apprehended crossing the border illegally every year. The problem now for the democratic argument, given that number you just mentioned in march. More 100,000 apprehensions, it appears that the number of people crossing is nearly back up to where it was in the bad old days in the mid 2000s. Martha the president has done a few things to stem this tide. He did the National Emergency at the border. Now talking about shutting the border down to send a message to mexico that if they dont help us with this situation you think about the fact that a Million People could cross in the course of a year. That is considered somewhat normal by historical standards is shocking itself. What do you think about this move to shut the border down to stem the crisis . Well, its very difficult. We have seen a couple of reasons. One to pressure mexico to do something. The other is to free up people, the Border Patrol staff working the ports of entry to go out in between the ports where people are crossing illegally. The big issue here is that the nature of the flow of illegal crossers has changed over the years. Back in the years in the bush year when one Million People were coming across every year, most of them were single adult men. They were trying to sneak across the border and avoid being caught. When they were caught, they were quickly returned to mexico. That was that. Now the flow is mostly either family units, people pretending to be families or unaccompanied children. They dont try to avoid detection. They cross with the purpose of giving themselves to the Border Patrol because they know they cant be held for very long. They cant be separated and they cannot be returned. Thats a huge incentive to process illegally into the United States. Martha then become a program. A family in the process to figure out whether or not you can stay. In most cases we know how that ends. Beto orourke his announcement rally said this about immigration. Watch.
