Or daughter could ask for. In moments, we talked to president Bush White House chief of staff john sununu who is standing by, but first we go to peter doocy live outside the capitol with what to expect this evening and in the carving days as the we celebrate the life of president george h. W. Bush. Traffic is closed on the first streets but thousands of people have showed up. 30 minutes away from being able to see the former president lying in state and a lot of people have been waiting all day including kyle and amy all the way from idaho. Why did you want to come . To pay tribute to the life and legacy of 41. Weve been out here for quite a bit with the weather and stuff like that. Regardless what side of the political aisle you are on, we are all americans, which is what i think 41 really strove to bring about in all of us. A Good Opportunity for everybody. Its amazing. Thank you, guys but we also met gail who drove from new jersey today. Why did you want to make the trip down 95 . Basically i was retired military. I was in the service when he was our commander in chief. What he had done for the military, i really appreciated it and i really wanted to show my gratitude. He puts the service before self, which is fantastic. Im just here because i feel that i need to express how grateful i am of the type of president he was when i was in the military. Thank you for your service, gail. One more person, george, who is from maryland. But youve got a personal connection to the 4,041st president. The fall of 2000, he was campaigning. I told him during the spring how he described his son talking to w and all the family, he was very folksy come up of his kids, i relayed that to him. He grabbed a big bear hug. It made my year. Just a great guy. Just a great man. Thank you very much. Martha, as you can see, many, many people. Everybody has a different story and they are getting one chance to go for the next 35 and a half hours to say goodbye. Martha thats great, peter. Really heartwarming to hear americans talking about why they took time out of their lives to make this journey, to be here tonight and give their respects to the 41st president. Peter, thank you very much. Peter doocy outside this evening. My next guest served as president bushs First White House chief of staff. This clip takes us to the beginning of their relationship. Watch. Pleased to announce my decision to appoint governor john sununu as chief of staff for my administration. The job of chief of staff requires the ability to lead, to motivate, to direct an Important Organization in the best interest of the country. John sununu has that background and experience necessary. Martha governor johnson into who attended the ceremony this evening joins me now. He joined us frequently. Im sure this is a moving and difficult evening, governer sununu. Martha, its a day of mixed emotions. We are here to mourn our friend and also to celebrate the life of a great president. Psychologically you get yourself whiplash a little bit. But it was a moving ceremony at a fitting ceremony for president who served this country not only well but with a style that i think everybody appreciates. Talk to us a little bit about your work as chief of staff and the time that you spent with the president and the evolution of that position and your future with him and knowing him for the rest of his life . It was a great job. He was a great man to work for. He had a wonderful style. We had developed a very close and personal relationship and i told him i didnt want to come to washington. But he really insisted i do it. You dont turn the president down. It was a relationship where he made it very easy for the chief of staff. The direction was clear. If he wanted to get multiple sides on an issue, it was my job to gather those sides, bring them into them. We would listen together. Back and forth. He would think about it a while and hed tell me what position he wanted taken. It was my job to go back and make sure that everybody followed the president s policy. It was one of the most gratifying and satisfying jobs i ever had and ended all the way, one of the easiest jobs made easy by the man i was working for and in fact in the white house theres a lot of resources to get a lot of things done very, very quickly. Martha it was not without controversy. Your thoughts on his domestic policy, on the no new taxes pledge as you look back on all of that from where you stand today . Martha, he passed hes known as a Foreign Policy president but he was a great domestic policy president. He passed a more significant legislation than any president except Lyndon Johnson or franklin roosevelt. The clean air bill, americans with disabilities act, civil rights bill, certainly his budget agreement which was very controversial. But that budget agreement produced the only surpluses this country has had in decades. What was a controversial piece of legislation, one in which the democrats forced him to pay the ransom of excepting taxes, turned out to be the extremely important piece of legislation for the Financial Stability of this country. The americans with disabilities act, and the extension of the clean air bill which had been stalemated for 13 years, thats been the environmental help mark hallmark piece of legislation thats guided this country for the last 25 years and the kind of legislation that other countries have used as the example for their own improvement of environmental legislation. Martha you left the job of chief of staff. He became the counselor to the president. Was that a difficult moment for you, leaving that job . Look, i left. I had become very controversial. It became clear to me that perhaps if i had left, the lightning would follow me and they would leave him alone. Unfortunately they didnt. He had a really tough campaign. As we know. Lost to bill clinton. Ross perot came in and picked up 20 points and the president lost by four and three quarters, twothirds or three quarters of perots votes should have been bushs. I had a concern that the president was sometimes so nice that somebody had to be there with a firm hand and i wasnt sure that there would be a firm hand to follow. Martha its interesting. He had kind words pretty much for everyone. Ross perot did not necessarily fall into that category. That was a Bitter Development for him that clearly he carried with him throughout his life. Well, ross perot had somehow in the year or two before the 1992 election. Ross perot had somehow decided he had been wrong and nobody understood why he felt that way. But i think he felt as a texan he deserved more entree from bush and baker than he got. Unfortunately, that bitterness put him into the race and i think caused george bush his second term. Martha thank you very much, governer sununu and former chief of staff to the 41st president of the net it states, Herbert Walker bush. Have a nice evening. Martha my next guest has a long history with president bush, one kaufman worked on the 1980 bush for president campaign. He eventually served as bushs white house personnel director and assistant to the president , white house political director. The two remain great friends with kaufman attending the president s private ninetieth birthday party. Good to be with you this evening. Said it was very hard to leave the rotunda. It was. Its a celebration. Its impossible to feel sad today. The purpose of life is to live a full and wonderful life every day. This man for 94 years led the most greatest life of any person i ever met. He left us with more friends, more people who love him. Its actually incredible. Changed my life forever. Change my kids life forever. Just a fabulous person. Sadly but joyful, its a celebration. You go to church, its a celebration of a life when somebody dies . Morally empty . Yes. Not sad. Martha you have been close to the bush family for all these years. Your thoughts when you looked at 43 as he is affectionately known, president bush as well, you watched, there is something about losing a parent. You get bumped up to that next level, right . Now you are the person who is the patriarch of the family and that is a difficult transition for many of us. They had such a great family. I first met president bush 40 years ago and the reason i fell in love with him, i was with andy causing was my brotherinlaw no. He the slogan is hes a president you dont have to train. Wonderfully impressive. My wife was waiting in the car for us with his hotel in boston and the president insisted on coming down to the car and talking to my wife for a while before he led us to leave because he cared. He knows my kids names, they know where they go to school. My daughter is a china expert. When she went to the bush school, he gave her a scroll given to him by the president of china. Very viable. He loved it and he wanted her to know that he cared. He knows in the white house, goes to the garden. He knows their names. He does the kids names. The personal side of bush that makes it extraordinary. Something that most politicians i know dont have. Lots of real friends. Not buddies. Real friends. Martha there is an authenticity to him that perhaps hurt him politically in the way because he wasnt always great by his own admission at being the great communicator. The reagan style great communicator. Perhaps what youre talking about is part of it. He was very real, very authentic, maybe that is comfortable in that role. Gave the famous speech where he says, i am that man, stepping up saying i want to be president of the United States. I want to be number one. To be honest, he was not a great communicator in the sense of Ronald Reagan or bill clinton for that matter, to be fair. He was never impressed with the spoken word, if you will. He never felt comfortable with it. We went through a thousand speechwriters just because that wasnt his day doll neck thing. But when it counted, he could step up. When the per berlin wall fell, unbelievable speech. An important days, he could speak of. But carrying a message every day . Not his strength. He made up for it in my opinion not making us just feel comparable, but the World Leaders feel comfortable. He knew every world leader by name. He knew them before they were World Leaders. He would call them that when there was a crisis but when he had five minutes during the day, hed use those five minutes to call a world leader. What do you think . When the leader of the United States because of third world country to ask, what do you think . Martha building relationships that ended up serving him in the long run. Ron kaufman, thank you very much. Nice to have you with us this evening. Many thanks. General keane is joining me next to share his reflections. To make sense of a highstakes meeting between President Trump and chinas president xi that have the two leaders calling a truce, at least for now. The relationship is a very. The relationship i have with president xi. A reason why we will get something thatll be good for china and good for the United States. If you want a car with driverassist technology, get a ford. Martha President Trump securing what he calls incredible deal at this weekends g20 summit, agreeing to a 90 day truce with china, which delays and impose a tariff on 20 billion in chinese goods. The president touts a very strong and personal relationship with chinese president xi jinping. Joining me jack keane, fox news strategic senior analyst. General, always good to see you. What did you think about this deal, this announcements . I think the deal is a good one. It remains to be seen with the followups is. I do not trust the communist chinese to be frank about it. I think this is more about delaying the inevitable as much as they possibly can, wait out this president , if they can. I know for a fact that under president xi, he made a decision to dominate and control the indo pacific region. Economic warfare, intimidation, coercion, some militarization is the second thing. He stated this publicly. He fully intends to replace the United States as the Global Leader in the world. Somewhere around 20302040. These are their goals and they they were stated publicly their goals before. This is how serious they are. Remains to be seen was going to happen as a result of this. Martha do you think the president should have held the line . Thats a good question. And its a step in the right direction. Take the step and see if they can make more progress is likely where hes coming from. But never lose sight of who they are and what their goals are. And they cannot be trusted. Martha i want to pay a sound bite from president bush in 1999 referring to china just to look at where we were with this relationship. Lets play that. Is china a big threat . No. Its a threat if we mishandle a relationship. Its not a threat. China is not seeking hegemony. I see no evidence and id like one person, the critics of china, on republican right or the democratic left, to tell me why they think they are seeking hegemony. Martha the ambassador of china. Knew the country well at that point. Your thoughts where we were then or now . That was largely the view. Remember, thou shalt ping down like Deng Xiaoping wanted to move it to a market based capitalist society. Lets help them, lets get in with the business investment. Heres the bet we were making. Following that economic reform, that political reform would follow and it would become something of a democracy. Wrong. What is followed is more authoritarianism. And very geopolitically ambitious and Economic Warfare as another vehicle. So the president im sure has a different view before he passed away of what china is doing in the world and what he had been. Thats pretty much the universal view at the time. Martha talk to me a little bit obviously the president said he wants to make cuts in a lot of areas. And defense is part of the plan, the 5 acrosstheboard agency cut. Do you think the president is accused, committed to that or is there an opening to leave the fence off that list given all the hard work has been done. I think hes open to discuss it. Thats going to take place. I know that senator jim inhofe and congressman matt thornburgh are going to have a discussion with them on the subject tomorrow. Heres the issue, martha. We made a down payment two years of defense increases. We need a defense buildup similar to what reagan did in the early 80s. Why is that . The devastating cuts of c sequestration has have, and i spent a year looking at our National Defense strategy and we are saying the United States is more at risk than weve been in decades. We could struggle, struggled to win a war and possibly lose it. The people of this commission are not prone to being alarmist. We run war games to make sure we understood whats actually happening here. I think, clearly, director mulvaney of omb told the president , everybody in the government should take the hit. The fence is only 15 of the budget. You dont continue to build up the money you would save giving defense a haircut is so small in terms of helping the deficit, is not going to make much progress. What you have to make certain you do is provide the resources of the American People are secure and safe. Thats the number one job. Martha its interesting that under president obama, sequestration, really, defense was the only department paying up the price. Everybody else kind of got off. Itll be interesting to see if the reverse will come true with this next round. But we will watch. General, thank you very much. Good to see you tonight. Still coming up next, terrorists on the brink as protest turned to vandalism, graffiti written all over the arc de triomphe when we come back. Ignition sequence starts. 10. 9. Martha the city of lights looking more like a war zone this weekend after a demonstration over taxes and living costs quickly erupted into the countrys worst urban riot in more than a decade. Some people say since the riots of 1968. Behind the broken glass and the graffiti on the arc de triomphe, a charred aftermath as people burn the cars up and down the streets. A radical grow best protest group known as the yellow vest is behind this. Trey gowdy is with us. Good evening, martha. French authorities removing burnedout cars and scouring graffitis off the chamfer he mentioned that this is the worst riots in a decade but French Police say some of the violent tactics were unprecedented. Watch. Hose projected towards officers, big balls thrown on them. We have pictures of that. Aerosol cans linked to gas bombs. Firecrackers thrown on our officers. Some 250 fires reported and 300 plus people remain behind bars. The violence included groups on the far left and far right, but the lease also believe much of the violence aimed at police was the work of professional troublemakers, the yellow jackets, the jackets have come to symbolize far more than just a push against rising fuel taxes. They are not emblematic of violent protesters using the spotlight to lash out at the policies of french president michael president emmanuel macron. Says he welcomes the views of the protesters, but announces the violence and vows to punish those behind it. Listen. Burning public or private buildings, threatening passersby or generalists or vandalizing the arc de triomphe. Those responsible for the violence dont want any change. They dont want any improvement. They want chaos. President macron asking his interior secretary to consider adapting security procedures to try and campaign is ongoing contest. This is the third weekend of the row in demonstrations and more are planned for later this week. Martha . Com martha we are back and this is a live look at president george h. W. Bush as he lies and state in the u. S. Capitol rotunda now open to the public who are coming into pay their respects. My next guest spent four years as the president s official weight house photographer, capturing everything from sweet moments with his beloved wife barbara, to intimate discussions with his National Security team. Even outings at his forte retreat. Here is susan biddle, former white house photographer for president s Ronald Reagan and george h. W. Bush, also became president bush foster his personal photographer after his days in the white house. You talk about what a pleasure it was to work with the former president. Your thoughts, first of all on his after his passing . I saw your three days are. I had no idea it was so close. I feel choked up about it, but at the same time what an incredible man. I was so lucky to work for him. So honored to work for him. Take a look at some of your wonderful photos. Diversely mentioned in the oval office, what was this moment . This was the beginning of the desert storm. When real serious things like that were going on, i have a longer there, they were just working really hard. It was very, very serious. Its how martha this is barbara brush and president bush and millie, one of their many we actually need to drop that banner. Whats going on here . You have to see millies face. Millie is about as embarrassed as they are. They got off the helicopter, came out to greet them and stops to do her business. Martha [laughs] lets go through this one because i love this one because it looks like a horseshoe competition. Whats the story behind this one . President bush as i heard jim baker say on one of the tv shows that he was the most competitive man that hes ever met. He set up all these teams in the white house. He how the houseman, the military aides, he had everybody on their team. They had these contests all the time. Here he lost. Houseman beat him. Martha clearly unhappy. This might be my favorite. There are so many wonderful photos that you took but lets take a look at this one of the president lying on the lawn surrounded by puppies. I love that because here he is, the president of the United States, but millie had puppies and it was a beautiful spring day. He just took the time to go outside, lie in the grass, let the puppies crawl over him. It was so amazing how human he was, as well as being the leader of the free world. This one is you say when it was gorbachev under house arrest in crimea. You are in their bedroom. Their bedroom. Martha talk to me as that experience of a photographer. How do you become part of the wallpaper but also you are a friend . I dont think i was invited into the bedroom because i was a friend, but we were actually out fishing that day and it was very blustery. A call came in on the radio phone. One of those big old radio phones before cell phones, of course. It was so noisy, he was hoping it was gorbachev. He wanted to go back to the house. I was in the second boat, i ran up the lawn and got to that house. The military aid ushered me in. Then he ushered me into the bedroom and i was surprised i was going into the bedroom. First time in the bedroom. I heard him say as i walked in, i heard bush say, mikhail mikae, mikhail mikael, are you all right . They always had transcripts. Yes, thats what he said. He saw mrs. Bush out the window on that side. He mouthed the words to me, go get mrs. Bush. Shes standing there looking concerned. Then suddenly she realized his hair was a mess because we had been out in the windy boats and she said, george, your hair she ran and got a brush. Then the picture was over. Martha amazing. This is also a beautiful one. Very Early Morning and this is just a sweet moment. They had such an amazing relationship. I always tried to get something that showed that. But they never showed public display of affection. I kept looking and i kept looking and then i noticed that he would walk her over to the pool in the morning going to the oval office. There was a case. I went out there to see if i could get a kiss and i finally did. Martha one last picture, if you could skip forward to the one of the president on the end of the boat, this is an important morning as well. Just a final note about this one before we go, susan . It was right after Saddam Hussein had invaded kuwait. So we had gone from aspen right to kennebunkport. As you can see, this sea is like glass. I rode with the doctor or whoever in another boat, but he invited me to come on his boat that morning. I was so close that i had to lean back to be able to get him in the frame and get myself from falling in the ocean. He was reading his briefing papers while he was fishing and he had this amazing ability to combine work and play, you know . Martha susan biddle, white house photographer, president tell my personal photographer told george w. Bush, good to see you, susan. Thank you for bringing your beautiful work. Coming up next, one of the most enduring legacy left behind by president bush, the market left on the u. S. Supreme court. Clarence thomas has endured america at its worst, and hes answered with america at its best. Martha a fascinating topic. Judge Andrew Napolitano joins me on that. Plus new developments in the Michael Cohen case that some could say could exonerate President Trump. What others are missing here whenis we come back. Being diagnosed with cancer made me rethink everything in my life. The things that became important to me were the relationships with people. We pulled together closer as a family. I had so many people at ctca helping me find a way to go through the treatments, to prepare me for anything i wouldve faced. Cancer showed me what true living is all about. So i started helping at a school for special needs children. I think they do more for me than i do for them. The reality of cancer is not everybody survives. Surviving for five years is a big deal. At ctca, they have a huge celebrate life event. That was amazing because the whole day was about all of the survivors. Im not exactly sure whats ahead of me, but im excited about my future. Visit cancercenter. Com to schedule an appointment now. The greatest wish of all. Is one that brings us together. The lincoln wish list event is here. Sign and drive off in a new lincoln with 0 down, 0 due at signing, and a complimentary first months payment. Only at your lincoln dealer. Martha speculation mounts over whether special counsel Robert Mullers investigation is here zeroing in on President Trump. The recent guilty plea from Michael Cohen could actually good be good news for the president. Real clear investigations makes the case that his so called bombshell could work in the president s favor, exonerating him or finding some exculpatory information included, will explain what we are talking about with judge Andrew Napolitano. Good to see you as always. Thank you for being here tonight. I want to get your reaction to this. This is from real clear investigations, as i said. Reading into the tea leaves of the criminal document which is not an indictment because it was a plea agreement. This is basically the case as they lay it out in regards to Michael Cohen. Mentions he tried to email russian Vladimir Putins office, but admitted to the fact that cohen did not have any direct points of contact at the kremlin and resorted to sending emails to the General Press mailbox. What do you make of that . The fact that basically said he reached out to the kremlin but didnt adhere to actually not a single contact there and had to go through this generic rest mailbox . I am two observations. One is cohen that had a serious amount of incompetence and bob mueller chose to reveal desperate trying to email the president of russia about a billion dollar land meal using a public email box is really absurd. But i also have to note that the most significant thing that we learned last thursday when Michael Cohen pleaded guilty for the second time is not what Michael Cohen told the court and not with bob mueller told the court. Its what Michael Cohen told m theyll make the fbi, we dont know what that was. A potential of 60 years if you are to charge five years per lie, thats down to six months. Means that he mustve told him something and they mustve corroborated it and they havent tipped their hand yet as to why that is. When i read through this, what occurs to me it was obvious he was trying to use his connection to President Trump to build business contacts for himself and to get these people to pay him because he has contacts in the white house. Offering all these things. I see potentially some of that at work in the story and this investigation so well see how that turns out in the end. I heard you talk about this earlier today, you felt like one of the significant things to remember about president george h. W. Bush wearing his nominations to the Supreme Court and a Lasting Impact of Clarence Thomas as a pick. The impact of Justice Thomas is beyond president bush president bushs wild imaginings for three reasonings. One, after 27 years, hes not regarded as having authored truly brilliant opinions on shrinking congressional overreach, stopping congress from regulating areas of the constitution that it doesnt authorize. Second, even his adversaries, even those who fought fiercely to prevent them from getting on the court, have finally recognized these opinions. How do i know this . They show up in casebooks that lost in the study and those case books are written by a very, very liberal faculty members. Third, Justice Thomas holds the record for his own law clerks themselves become federal judges and highranking government administrators. These are things that george bush could have never imagined. Hes the senior justice of the Supreme Court, one who others look. Martha thank you, judge. Always good to see you. Pleasure, martha. Martha we are watching the lives seen here as people cycled through and pay their respects to president bush. We do understand now that the president will be there at 8 30 this evening. We expect the first lady will be there with him to pay his respects to the former president as well. Tonight, legendary notre dame basketball coach Digger Phelps here to talk about his friendship with the late president. That spans nearly half a century when we come back. Its always a pleasure to have the opportunity, as i did, to say hello to lou holtz and to my great friend Digger Phelps. They have a way making us feel at home. Thats why we designed capital one cafes. You can get savings and checking accounts with no fees or minimums. And one of americas best savings rates. To top it off, you can open one from anywhere in 5 minutes. This isnt a typical bank. This is banking reimagined. Whats in your wallet . And then, more jobs robegan to appear. What started with one job spread all around. Because each job in energy creates many more in this town. But when i started seeing i knew aboutthings, emors. I didnt know what was happening. So i kept it in. He started believing things that werent true. I knew something was wrong. But i didnt say a word. During the course of their disease around 50 of people with parkinsons may experience hallucinations or delusions. But now, doctors are prescribing nuplazid. The only fda approved medicine. Proven to significantly reduce hallucinations and delusions related to parkinsons. Dont take nuplazid if you are allergic to its ingredients. Nuplazid can increase the risk of death in elderly people with dementiarelated psychosis and is not for treating symptoms unrelated to parkinsons disease. Nuplazid can cause changes in heart rhythm and should not be taken if you have certain abnormal heart rhythms or take other drugs that are known to cause changes in heart rhythm. Tell your doctor about any changes in medicines youre taking. The most common side effects are swelling of the arms and legs and confusion. We spoke up and it made all the difference. Ask your parkinsons specialist about nuplazid. Every Insurance Company tells you they can save you money. Save up to 10 when you bundle with esurance. Including me, esurance spokesperson dennis quaid. Hes a pretty good spokesperson. Ehhh. So when i say, drivers who switched from geico to esurance saved an average of 412, you probably wont believe me. Hey, actor lady whose scene was cut. Hi. But you can believe this esurance employee, nancy abraham. Seriously, send her an email and ask her yourself. No emails. No emails. When insurance is affordable, its surprisingly painless. In a society that can sometimes be warm dumb like cold and impersonal, bring warmth. In society cut off from moral and spiritual roots, cultivate grace and truth. In the face of the uncertainties of the future, affirm your purpose and realize your promis promise. Martha great advice. President bush imparting his words of wisdom from the dames class of 52. He has also shared a deep bond with president george h. W. Bush. That developed into a deep friendship of more than four decades. Here now, Digger Phelps. Welcome, great to have you here this evening. I want to start with something about, you just mentioned to me before we came on and thats what happened when people were so close and so loving. And what you witnessed over the last year. Going back to when they obviously for 73 years were together, when barbara got in sick last april and was in the hospital, she came home that sunday on april 15 and i called george on monday the 16th and said to him, george, i will go and light a candle for barbara. Sadly she died that tuesday. As we recall it was a long funeral process and he had to take that procession going from houston all the way up to texas a m for the burial. Then, come all the way back. Then he got ill. And he had five great months in may. I talked to him on his birthday june 12th. A sidebar, barbara when you said, digger, for four days of our lives together, we are the same age for four days because then on the 12th im married to this old man. I called him on his birthday, and he was a great. He sounded good because hes fishing or out on his boat and hes just distracted from what he had with his relationship with barbara. Once he came back in october, being in that house where he or she died, and i talked to them last thursday or a week ago thanksgiving and he sounded oka okay. He came home and got them at the time where we could just talk for a couple minutes. Then of course as we well know, and as i said to him as we were hanging up, george, i will call you. He said digger, youve been good to me. And i said no, youve been good to me, i will call you christmas. But as we saw, he passed.
