Attempts to overrun the city of ghazni. But today 70 of the questions asked at the White House Press briefing were about a relativelv contestant that got fired from the white house. She said one of her motives was to tear the entire place down. Are you saying you would like the president to stop tweeting about omarosa . Have you asked the president of his ever used the nword . The remarks have been stinging but somewhat vague. She offered up recordings that were contradicted, and it was abundantly clear in terms of motivation. We are storing all this up perhaps. When you read my book tomorrow, the book comes out tomorrow. Im telling my story on unhinged. If you get the book, you see the quote. You could ask me anything from unhinged that is out today. Feel free me to to ask me anytg about unhinged. And, about whats going on at the white house. Joining me now, a man who has covered everything from the war in afghanistan to cover ups of sexual assault. And battles between President Trump and omarosa at the apprentice board room where he was a contestant as well. Good evening to you, and welcome to the world of Reality Television translated on a National International scale. Omarosa and hes always had an affinity and affection for people and stories that rate. He hired her time and time again on the apprentice, even when she lost she was a winner. She became such a prominent public figure, and he would take his most vivid contestant. It seems his judgment in the hiring, this is clearly a case where he should have said, you are fired and kept her out of the boardroom and out of the white house because what has happened, obviously her performance as a key aid it to the president was substandard. They feared her as much as they wanted her. She was a volatile person and i think the fact that she was a black woman, one of the few highranking black officials in the white house kept her surviving in and around the oval office. Now it turns out that she has written this treacherous book and the president has responded i think in a very egregious and distasteful way, that does him no credit at all. You know i have been with him a hundred times over 40 years and ive never heard him utter anything like the nword or come nothing that felt he ever came out of his mouth. I think that shes lying about that, i dont think shes ever heard him say that either, and yet we have this discussion now, and he calls her a dog and a low life. Its a very, very distressful kind of soap opera going back against a very sordid Reality Television. Martha it is a soap opera to be sure. Heres how it started and he became impressed by her, and thought she was a big star. There are some of the old days. I had to let her know that i had soap experience and i was featured on the cover of soap opera digest. Yay me. You are not going to tell me to be quiet. You better be respectful. You can say whatever you want but you are not going to get mean. Dont ever tell me to be quiet. What kind of lady would tell you to be quiet. Im a grown woman, i run half of the west coast for okay magazine. Get it straight. I am not your stuff. You have to start and, you have to think strategically. You are on the wrong sign of omarosa today. Once she got a job in the white house, years of book cover that she wrote in 2008 in the name of it is, the bitch switch. The more sensational, the better. The funny thing is that even a critical story which could be hurtful personally can be very valuable to your business. Geraldo. My problem with that martha is that you cant sing at the same volume, the same tune, when youre talking about north korea and talking about omarosa. Your emotions have to reflect the portion proportionality. Omarosa now, i think that a lot of this goes back to a real fundamental problem in the trump white house, and there are just not enough black people in that facility in the government, and she was so flamboyant and she could draw a crowd and run into the stadiums, and the trump fans would cheer omarosa because theo have the president s back. But i almost used as a metaphor that i would have regretted but that tough lady, she turns it on him. And now the president by responding at the same time as she is giving and dishing it out to him, i think it diminishes him. You look at whats going on and those are all stories that im going to cover tonight, but the oxygen seems to be sucked out of the room by this. As i mentioned, the president does not seem to be turning the page, hes responding pay in a very big way and he has tweeted eight or ten times in the past 24 hours. Hes not in a hurry to turn the page and his reactions, and he is strong and really modulated and very direct but my guess is he will stop tonight. You would call it modulated . Im not sure i would agree. Hes not modulated, hes not modulated as a response, he is direct. But i suspect he will move on. I may not share with geraldo, its unfortunate to go to her level on this stuff but this is what he is, hes a fighter, hes a new yorker and he gets punched and he punches back. But i will tell you, i dont think theres anything particularly wrong with human nature here or americans, i think what you lead with, martha, 70 of the questions at the White House Briefing from the media were about omarosa. That tells you where their heads are and also tells you where a lot of the leads on a lot of the shows. I mentioned to your producer and im sure theres not time but folks could take a look, god provided cnn. The coach of the jake tappers show. It supposed to be horrible, and disgusting and terrible with the president said, but that panel was gleeful. They were delighted and that tells you what this is about. Its a chance to get trump. Quite apart from whether he should have said this or done this, this is another opportunity for the media to get trump if they can get him on this, they will be perfectly happy. Notice the lengths to which they go. This business about dog, and dog as a code word, its a racist word. Its not a racist word, donald trump has used dog to refer to many people, many wellknown africanamericans like mitt romney, glenn beck and arianna huffington. So he does not have regard for color in this way. He could not have survived in new york, in his business, or he racist. So this is the president weve got. He gets punched and he punches back. One wishes, and i can imagine the thoughts of kelly anil conway and others that he would have never made this higher in the first place but i think he said that. He said kelly was opposed to it by i insisted. Its regrettable but, they will move on, she will be history in a week and he will continue to talk about north korea, isis and continue to do his work, im confident in that. Martha all right, bill bennett, thank you so much for being with us. Sorry about the speech. Great to have you with us tonight. In many cultures, young men would stay with their families until their 40s. Martha knew details tonight at outrageous setting in. Five extremists allegedly training children to kill people in schools by some accounts at a new mexico compound are now allowed out of jail to go free as they go to trial. Where 11 malnourished children were discovered basically living in filth. A 3yearold child was also found on the grounds, despite one child telling the adults that doesnt compound was a School Shooting training ground, the judge in this case that there was no specific threat here. Many people here live in unconventional ways. The police you are about to hear are outraged by that assessment. Trace gallagher joins us live in the west coast newsroom. They call that a quote credible threat against the judge which will force the evacuation of the Dallas County courthouse. They wont give information about the source of the threat but the judge has come under fire by telephone, email and social media including this, quoting this idiot judge needs immediate disbarment. Meantime, in court proceedings, prosecutors of the adults of the compound were teaching children how to shoot to kill teachers, cops and students and the fbi testified that children were forced to attend an exorcism to expel the demons from 3yearold abdul lepage, and the little boy had epilepsy. But witnesses say his father would not give his son medication and when the boy died of a seizure, the father told the children that abdul would come back as jesus and tell them who to kill. The defense argued that this compound was nothing more than a religious journey and the koran said there is no law against guns or rituals. There certainly no prohibition against training at 13 or 15yearold how to use a firearm. Theres certainly no prohibition against that. Correct . None to my knowledge. The defense also argued because they are muslim or black, prosecutors are applying a double standard. The judge who has been criticized in the past for setting low bail allowed a 20,000 signature bond for the members, meaning no money was due upfront and they would only pay if they failed to show for trial. Last month, he said a 10,000 bail for a man accused of punching his girlfriend as she breastfed their newborn. He also allegedly slapped the child. In the case of the 11 children in the compound, the judge dependent her action saying prosecutors did not prove the defendants had planned to kill anyone and breaking right now we are being told that one of the female leaders of the compound has now been picked up on an Immigration Violation by ice. More as we get it. Martha joining me now ryan mauro professor of counterterrorism at liberty. Welcome and glad to have you here. What do you know about the leader of this group . It turned out that it was a female lead colt which is not what you would expect from an islamics extremist movement. She has somehow convince these people that she was having revelation from god and some sources are as saying she claims to be this apocalyptic and at times figure. The child they were expelling the demons from, and passed away unfortunately, they believed he would come back as jesus and tell them what targets to go after. Its not just a radical islamic camp, its a radical islamic cult which is even worst, course. Im outraged by what the judge did today. Dont go threatening anyone, we dont want her resigning because of that. But i was getting a lot of Text Messages from Law Enforcement including a new mexico saying, why do we even try anymore . So now this miriam, who you referred to, has been picked up as we just sat on a i. C. E. Violation. She will be held for a while. In terms of they werent planning anything eminent is what the judge is saying. When we look at what they did to these children, these children are malnourished and one child died under their care. Its clearly child abuse thats going on here, if thats not enough to hold his adults that were endangering the lives of these children, i dont know what is. The prosecutors were saying dont release them out even on house arrest. Its too dangerous because sometimes people escape and islamic extremists would be most likely to escape or kill someone in that situation. I was reading the document in which the judge justified her decision and its one of the most absurd documents ive ever read. She agreed with the defense prosecutors were pushing religious discrimination because they said, if these were white christians, with or even be here . She was saying, you cant inject faith into the decision. But you can when it is an ideological death cult, which is what this is. They said it was a credible threat to the community because i couldnt lay out a plan of attack, it was aspirational. Martha what about the plot for what they were training the children to do . One of the children so they were being trained to do the School Shootings. Aspirational. Because it wasnt a plan of attack on a certain date. Martha but thats the fine point, what one judge determines to be aspirational and not able to hold someone in custody, another judge would say thats exactly the reason why they should be held until their trial. It could happen at any second and there also wasnt enough evidence that they wouldnt show up for the trial. They were living with a fugitive. She has got to be the worst judge in the country, ive never seen anything like this. But im also really sad to hear that people are threatening her, because for her to resign in the wake of threats, we dont want that either. Martha thanks for being with us tonight. President trump we have an removed unnecessary restraints on our work bodies in afghanistan. Those who risk their life and limb for our country deserve rules of engagement that give them the best opportunity to finally defeat the enemy. Martha that was President Trump making good on a promise that he talked about a a month and a half ago but it has now kicked in and authorizing more than 5 billion for americas longest war. But still nearly 17 years later at the deadly fighting is a constant threat for our 14,000 troops that are still in the wartorn country. Sunday a green beret died after being injured by an ied. U. S. Special sergeant is now the fifth american killed in afghanistan this year. More than 2200 have been killed since the war started in 2001. Joining me now is cj the shivers, Pulitzer Prize winning u. S. Correspondent, marina gulf war veteran and author of the new book the fighters americans in combat in afghanistan and iraq. Thanks for joining us, its fascinating story and hard to read at times but have been in this fight. You said this about your writing at about the story. The experience of being ambushed or sniped after encountering explosive devices of killing with both modern and older tools, local Partner Forces are participating in air strikes and surviving indirect fire attacks, trying to save wounded friends or being wounded yourself, grieving for her lost friends and navigating the moral puzzles and the weight of conscience or doubt that are a recurring central feature of the Human Experience of war. I felt that was so potent and applied to most experience is so far. This war has gone on so long, we now have a very Large Population of veterans that are very familiar with this and, perhaps memorializing and summarizing these experiences through a few characters so that the rest of us might have a fuller understanding of the war wars. And, all volunteer force is created separation between the military and the rest of the population. So we now have a military that goes to war in a country that doesnt, and many of those are described in what you read and tried to lay out in the book. And that boosts the politics to most of our reasons. Martha i think most people dont know those who fight in the war, and when you look at world war ii everybody knew somebody on the block, or the vietnam war. But thats not the case in these wars. We write about specific individuals after years of collecting all these stories, just give me a little bit of robert soto. Robert soto is a hometown kid, a local who grew up in the bronx. He was in middle school when the real World Trade Center was a attacked in a profoundly affected him. He skipped his neighborhood, took the train downtown and walked over there with a friend and vowed to defend the United States. At age 17 he enlisted and at age 18 he was in warrenville valley. That was one place, and there were many, there were exceptionally difficult. He served there for a full year, lost many friends and i would say that his idealism was replaced by realism. He saw that what they were trying to do in good faith wasnt working. It wasnt anything like a radicalizing experience for him but he certainly came home disappointed. Martha so when you look at the situation now, you are not surprised that that caliban is resurgent . I wouldnt even use resurgent, they never went away. When we were there and have your numbers, the taliban had to change its behaviors. Certainly not as visible or openly active as it is some days. But it never went away. The war throughout has had sets of unrealistic goals and one of those has been the almost instantaneous creation that the American Forces try to come in some cases with Afghan Security partners, and they are not up to standing alone. They couldnt be, the way we trained them was often too hasty, the equipment wasnt enough and you dont make a military in a few years. So i dont think between the taliban having never left, ever having never truly been defeated and the Afghan Forces never become confident, they were in a surprising situation today. Martha one last question. When you look at the situation on a hole, with syria, iraq and afghanistan, is it fair to say that the efforts of these fighting men and women, that without what they did, isis and the taliban would be a stronger force and that they have succeeded in at least holding them back and changing the course of whats happening in the country . Isis didnt exist before the wars so we cant really credit ourselves with defeating isis when it actually incubated and formed in occupied iraq. I would say this, the soldiers and the marines and air force force personnel, everyone who went over there tried to give a good account of themselves. In the main, thats what i observed over the years. Politics doesnt exist much in the war fighters mind, when they are fighting the war. Your bandwidth is taken up by fighting the war and by looking at people on the right and the left. The level that i write about, the people i encountered and came to know, i gave it their all. Martha you just set it but youre right about the fact that the most important thing to them was an incredible bond of that they built with each other, looking out for the person on the right and on the left and im sure that something they carry with them for the rest of their lives. It may be even surprised me but this book was so violent and people will find hard to read, but its ultimately about love. Martha tj shivers, thanks for being here today. Its primary night again and we are waiting for results in four key states. Tonight, minnesota and wisconsin with key races in each of those states. But the eyes are on the midwest tonight where democrats are starting to undo what happened in 2016 and some of those battleground states, most notably the race for wisconsin governor where democrats have a crowded field. Scott walker is running for the fourth time. They believe he may be vulnerable this time around. Peter doocy has more background on what we should be watching tonight. Eight democrats are elbowing each other out of the way for a chance to face Governor Scott walker. But National Democrats have been having kind of a hard time figuring out which candidate they should help with early resources or endorsements. The front runner is seen as the States Education superintendent tony devers, but hes not necessarily a favorite of the factors making medicine more aggressive because he was not on a short list drawn up by a group called, our wisconsin revolution. Whoever does wind up winning will get a boost in the bank from the Democratic Governors Association who already has millions squirreled away, and they ate candidates are all pretty similar in that none of them like walkers latest legislation which limited the collective Bargaining Power of the unions in the state and none of them like the 10 Million Dollar fox con Electronics Plant that walker helped bring to the state which is expected to bring thousands of jobs with it. Democrats are trying to help put forward a candidate that can flip the retiring paul ryans seat. His favorite of the six republicans running as a former aide named obrien style. The winner there will face whatever democrat emerges from a contentious twoperson primary from a seat that is not safe. And democrats are not on offense everywhere. Two wellfunded republicans are competing to take on incumbent democratic senator tammy baldwin. One of them is a state senator who hope she gets credit for the good economy and the other is kevin nicholson, a former president of the College Democrats of america who left the party that his parents are still part of over the democrats prochoice platform. Martha . Martha peter doocy, and front of a red barn in walkie chef. Here now is more special reports, bret baier will be watching these throughout the evening but its always good to see you. When you look at the races, it could be a reshaping in terms of the face of some of these places and paul ryan has had that seat for a long time. He leads as speaker of the house. What are you watching tonight and that wisconsin race . Bret i think wisconsin is the heart of where the battles will be and it will be a test of, wonder, how President Trump plays in wisconsin and, number two, how fierce the resistance is on the democratic side and how organized they are. There are some primary races here that will determine some big positions. For example, tammy baldwin, the democrat senator currently is potentially vulnerable. And depending on who the republican is, you could be setting up for a really tough race for the u. S. Senate in wisconsin that really, the democrats werent planning on being a tough race. Republicans are looking at the map and thinking potentially there could be good things on the senate side of the house. Martha scott walker is running for his fourth term as governor. He has been through a recount, hes had a tough ride at times there. Do you think he can hang on . Bret he sending him some warning flares to the partys overall saying we squeaked by a number of times before, this could be tough. The opposition depending on who wins tonight is pretty organized and wellfunded. I think that there is a sense that Governor Walker will call him all the favors he can. You already saw President Trump tweet about Governor Walker and his success in bringing in that company, fox con, into wisconsi wisconsin. Martha in terms of keith ellison, hes running to be the attorney general in minnesota. It was the first muslimamerican congressmen in the United States congress but hes dealing with something that we have seen, we covered a lot of in a lot of different venues. He has an abuse scandal in his hand. Just days before the election, and his former girlfriend is out saying that its true, and it has really caused a big stir in the race. Whats amazing about the story, martha, hes the deputy chair of the Democratic National committee and the dnc has not put out a comment, no statement. The sierra club has put out a statement about this race, but the dnc has not. It was also amazing is Ari Fleischer tweeted out earlier, the media is not clamoring to get the dnc to put out a statement and there is obviously interpretations of why that is. When you look at Chris Collins story, in both cases you have two individuals saying they are not guilty of what they are being accused of. They were all over Chris Collins. Nancy pelosi said he had to step down and maybe he should step down but the fact that they are not even responding or putting out any kind of statement whatsoever about what they think about all this is shocking. Bret or that the media is not covering it. Outside of minnesota, try a Google Search and see how many media articles in different news organizations have covered the story. Weve obviously covered it here as well as other stories around this primary night, but its not getting a lot of attention and it could potentially be a big problem for ellison in this election tonight. It all comes down to turn out and whether people are turned off by these allegations and how hes dealt with them. Martha itll be interesting to see how that turned out it is. Its a tough week in the middle of august at the end of the summer and after labor day theres a lot of interest in all of these races so turnout will be interesting to watch. Significant nights for a number of individuals. Thank you so much, always good to be here. Still to come, a bombshell that is wracking the Catholic Church Catholic Church tonight accusing hundreds of priests of the abuse of more than 300 children. Trace gallagher come live with this stunning story breaking tonight from our west coast newsroom. Good evening again, teresa. Reporter they extensive report on this to your investigation began with a powerful statement from the grand jury quoting here we the members of the grand jury need you to hear this. There have been other reports about child sex abuse within the Catholic Church but never on this scale. It goes on to say more than a thousand child victims were identified but if more victims were not afraid to come forward, the real number might be several thousand. Mostly boys, some girls, quoting, all of them in some way and all of them brushed aside. One priest admitted to assaulting at least a dozen young boys and the bishop then wrote a letter thanking him for help in gods. Another priest confessed to and orally rating another 15 boys. And a priest in harrisburg abused five sisters in the same family, even collecting samples of their body fluids. Despite incontrovertible evidence, the church sided with the priest. Years later when he confessed, it was too late to prosecute and one of those sisters is now 37. I just feel like i have like my whole life has been a lie. I didnt feel comfortable at all, i still dont feel comfortable now in relationship relationships. Reporter of the astonishing part is the church kept meticulous records of the abuse and the coverup, all the way to the vatican. The Pennsylvania Attorney general said documents from the dioceses secret archives formed the backbone of the investigation. Watch. The impact, especially when kept secret, last a lifetime. The time of telling these victims to keep their truth to themselves has ended. Reporter the report is also very harsh on Cardinal Donald world, former archbishop of pittsburgh and now d. C. , for his part in concealing the sexual abuse. He issued a statement saying he acted with diligence, with concern for the victims, and to prevent future acts of abuse. And because of death and the statute of limitations, only two priests are bracing charges. Martha incredible. Awful story, thank you. Here tonight, father john morris and Mitchell Garabedian, a clergy abuse attorney who is very involved in the boston case that is very well known. Let me start with you, your reaction having been so closely involved in that extensive boston case and the tens of thousands of people involved in that, what goes through your mind as you read through these complaints . It is stunning. Im not surprised at all, what goes through these complaints is what ive seen in boston and around the world. Its the blueprint, the Catholic Church has a blueprint of priests sexually abusing innocent children, supervisors allowing it to happen, the vatican knowing about it, all with the Common Thread of secrecy. The priest tells the child, you better keep the sexual abuse a secret for god is going to punish you or your mother is going to die or your parents will be divorced. When the parents report the abuse to the pastor of the church, the pastor or a chancellor or bishop will say, you better keep this quiet because you dont want to ruin the image of the church. Martha so mitchell, staying with you for just a moment, we heard the attorney general say or the prosecutor say, there is extensive documentation of all of these complaints. So in a sense, once that was open for them to look at, the church made it easy for them in many ways because they had documented all of these stories over the course of the years. Without your experience as well . Beco yes, canon law it requires they document the sexual abuse and they keep those records and they actually have files called secret files which the cardinal has or the archbishop has, where the ugliest facts are. It took me years in boston to reach the secret files through a court order but we eventually got to the secret files and it showed the Bernard Cardinal law knew that father john jay kagan was sexually abusing children but he didnt want it public. Martha there was some amazing reporting done on those stories and also the movie spotlight in the moment when they go down the halls and those files and all of the information that was kept after all these years. Father jonathan morris, i know its heartbreaking for everyone, its most heartbreaking for the victims. And we cannot of course its embarrassing to me. I am ashamed. Even to be part of a group of people in this case, catholic clergy who have a significant percentage, not a majority, over 300 in this case, 300 over seven years, 300 priests over seven years and there were about 15,000 priests during that time so its a relatively small percentage. But it doesnt matter. Im embarrassed and ashamed but its nothing compared to the victims and what they suffered. Let me say this, and i have a very, very close relative who was abused as a young girl at six or seven years old. And it transformed her life, not for the good. I know what its like. And im ashamed. I am embarrassed. Martha so mitchell, when you look forward, because there are two priests according to the report that could be prosecuted because of the statute of limitations. So where does this go from here . Mitchell and then father jonathan before we leave this. We need statute of limitations laws to be amended throughout the country. For instance, new york state has woefully inadequate statute of limitations laws. Michigan is the same, pennsylvania up until age 30, civilly you can file a civil lawsuit. But the problem is, the Catholic Church says all the right things but they adamantly oppose amending the statute of limitations and they are changing their ways. Their activities are still evil and a criminal and transparency is what is needed. Evidence can be given an testimony can be given but the Catholic Church opposes that. So what they say and what they do martha father john, final thought. The transparency point, i 100 agree with you. It needs to not only be at the diocese and state Level Company needs to go to the vatican. I dont see the vatican opening up the archives, there is no real investigation if the vatican does not open up their archives, number one. But secondly, about the statute of limitations, let me push back a little bit here. Why doesnt the state of new york want to limit the statute of limitations also to the Public School system . They should be for everyone. And they are afraid to do that. Martha we have to leave it there. It should be for everyone. Father jonathan, thank you. We will be right back. Midterm elections are just months away and no matter what you hear, the truth is democrats do have a strong chance of taking over the house of representatives if history is any guide. Short term that means that nancy pelosi will get unfettered subpoena power and maxing water is likely to be chairman of the Financial Services committee. But more broadly it means an ascendant democratic party, not the party you grew up with but a new and more radical and far more tolerant version of that party. How radical . Let me show
