Interview. We have a lot of questions for her. Thanks for inviting us into your home tonight. Thats it for this special report. Fair, balanced and unafraid. The story hosted by Martha Maccallum starts right now. Did you see that video . Martha i love that video. You might see it again and this hour i love it so much. Thank you, good to see you tonight. Breaking tonight, an exclusive interview with the man urging the president to strip topsecret Security Clearances from formal officials who are now some of his largest, loudest critics on tv. I use the terms that this is nothing sort of treasonous. I really question his fitness to be in this office. I know we are not nazi germany but theres a commonality. They have assumed Vladimir Putin interest. Lies, person not fit to be president of the United States. Martha six officials who wants held highranking postat the fbi, the cia, the nsa. They politicize and in some cases monetize their Public Service and Security Clearances, making baseless accusations of improper contact with russia or being influenced by russia against the president is extremely inappropriate and the fact that people with Security Clearances are making these baseless charges provides inappropriate legitimacy to accusations with zero evidence. Martha good evening, everybody. I Martha Maccallum in new york. The story begins with senator rand paul fresh off his meeting with the president discussing this idea. I spoke to him moments ago. Martha senator, good to see you. Thank you for being here. Tell me about your conversation with the president about this. Until the president and private what ive been saying in public, that i think theres a great danger to having Talking Heads on tv who are excia
agents and stole a classified clearance. Theres a real danger that they might inadvertently reveal Classified Information and john brennan has a history of this. Back in 2012 we were discussing we discovered the underwear bomber. John brennan at that time briefed excia agents who were retired, but still had topsecret clearance. He briefed them and said dont worry, the u. S. Has someone inside, we have inside control. One of these excia agents went on television and said we have a double agent and nobody needs to worry. It looks like the double agent was still there. So john brennan has already been involved when he was on the inside leaking information to people who still had topsecret clearance who are now Talking Heads. John brennan leaked information that almost cost the life of a double agent. This is four years ago now. He should have been fired for that but he wasnt fired by President Obama because i think he was a partisan, but now hes
a talking head on the outside saying that basically President Trump should be executed. Thats what we do for treason and so im very concerned about him having privileges because of his past history, but i would make it more universal. I dont think that excia agents of any stripe who are now Talking Heads should continue to get Classified Information. I think its wrong. Martha i guess thats the main difference in what you are saying. You are suggesting that they should be a Blanket Treatment for all some people are pointing to, for example, mike flynn, who had Security ClearanceEnchanted Lock her up. It is that what the president is talking about here . Because his critics are saying that what he wants to do is create an enemies list and that he wants to shut these people u up. Let me show you what the senator tweeted out. She said this is what totalitarianism looks like. So why is she not wrong . I think no one is talking
about limiting anyones speech. An excia agent can get out there and say incredibly stupid things like the president is treasonous. Yes, no one will stop john brennan from saying that. No one stops him from taking millions of dollars to say such horrendous things, but should we still get Classified Information . I would think that if you are a soldier or you are the head of the cia, basically you have a allegiance to the Commander In Chief. The Commander In Chief makes decisions. If you dont like them, you can resign, but hes no longer in government. He should not be getting Classified Information. He also has a history of leaking Classified Information that endangered agents in the field. Martha you are referring to john brennan and thats what you referred to originally but you saw the white house today. They added a lot of people to that list, susan rice, michael hayden, mccabe, comey and according to what they are saying now, james comey and Andrew Mccabe do not even have classified clearance, they do not have that kind of Security Clearance. So would you expand the list to include michael hayden, james clapper, would he be on your list as well . I would probably not name names, i would have it as a universal policy that when you leave the only time i can think of a reason why you would want to keep this would be in a transition when you are still breathing people, when youre sitting down with the next administration. I would probably just go One Step Beyond and not let any retired officials go on television to still have classified Security Clearance. Martha so how serious is the president about pursuing this . They said they want to look into the avenues that exist to pull these clearances. What was your impression when you were in there with him about what the time frame is for making this happen and how determined he is to do it . I think theres a great deal of resolve. I dont think we should reveal secrets to people who are calling the Commander In Chief treasonous. I dont think there are many people in america who will disagree with that judgment that we would continue to give secrets to a person calling the president treasonous, so i do
think the American People will agree with him on this and i would probably just go even further and say that really excia agents once retired should no longer have topsecret clearance. Martha just in terms of the chicken and egg on this, was it your idea initially or did you talk to the president about it and did you say i would like to bring this up, im going to start pursuing this . Ive been upset about John Brennans remarks for a long time but ive also been upset from the very beginning. I filibustered originally his nomination back in 20122013. Ive never been a big john brennan fan. You remember also that john brennan was involved with hacking into the democrats computers when they were doing the research into torture and waterboarding. They illegally, and he eventually apologized, not before sort of lying at first and saying that they didnt do it, but john brennan has a very, very sketchy history of doing things and abusing power, so he needs to not be getting that information because i think he
has a history of doing things for partisan reasons and also things that the cia is not supposed to do, which is spy on senators and on their computers. Martha went to the president say about brendan . I think hes not really happy with brendan and the others. Does anybody remember five or ten years ago when people retired from the cia, they might go on television but they sort of act like statesmen. They act like retired statesmen and they would weigh in on affairs from 60,000 feet, but you didnt have them saying vote democrat, you didnt have them calling the president words like disgusting and disgraceful. Martha absolutely not. This is so overthetop that something has got to be done and these people do not need to be privy to secrets because they might be using these secrets for partisan purposes. They are nakedly partisan and john brennan should not get anywhere within 10,000 yards of the government. He should have a restraining order. Martha those are very strong words. Without apply, for instance to robert gates, who worked for democrats and republicans, he wrote a book where he said some pretty strong things about President Obama in terms of his confidence in his ability to lead. Would you include him on a list like that . What i would do is probably try not to make it individuals. Probably the best way to do this in the white house may well decide this, i dont know what they will decide. They will probably look to how that something can be rolled out. I think they believe that these people should no longer get information but sometimes its better to have a policy that doesnt have a name that basically says those who are retired or lose their clearance. Martha thats not what Sarah Huckabee sanders did today. She was very specific and she named specific individuals who have been incredibly critical of the president. You think that was wrong . I dont disagree with it and they think it can be ad hoc as well and i think john brennan has indicated he should not have clearance, so i think you can also have individual reasons why individuals should have their clearance go martha they say we are living in
unprecedented times and that is what provoked them to be so critical and so outspoken with a kind of language that you talk about. What do you say to them about that . I think they are deranged. Trumped arrangement syndrome. Saying theres not going to be democracy. When did President Trump come out against democracy or voting . These things are so overtheto overthetop. Most democrats in congress were for engagement with russia under President Obama. Now to a person they ask wow act as if you are anything short of wanting a war with russia that you are not doing enough. Every day they want new sanctions, new sanctions, this and that and its like do they not remember that even though reagan called the soviet union and evil empire, he sat down and Didnt Hurl Epithets at him . They had a reasonable conversation and because they did we had Nuclear Arms Reductions and it was a huge step forward for world peace. That can happen again, but not if we are deranged by politics. Martha one last unrelated question. I know you received the documents from Brett Kavanaugh
on friday. Did you have a chance to look at them, and how will you vote . Weve been reviewing them for sometime now and im going to meet with Brett Kavanaugh tomorrow. I have an open mind. Im undecided. I am very concerned about the Fourth Amendment. I do not believe that you can have a blanket exception to the Fourth Amendment for National Security. The Fourth Amendment was meant to limit the government and if the government just as we are going to do this for National Security and theres an exemption to the Fourth Amendment, thats very, very troubling. We will have i hope a spirited discussion about the Fourth Amendment and we will see where the chips fly at the end. Martha we will look forward to that. Always good to see you, thank you for being here tonigh tonight. Here now, judge jeanine pirro, host of justice with judge pick janine and author of the new book liars, leakers and liberals. Getting a lot of attention. Thanks to janine and her writing and also a little bit thanks to whoopi goldberg. That was unbelievable. Unbelievable. Good to see you tonight. Thanks for being here. I want to ask you about what i was just talking to senator rand paul about. Do you think that the white house decision to pursue eliminating the Security Clearance for all of those individuals, including john brennan, michael hayden, james clapper, is that wise . I think the one thing that we are not really clear on is whether or not anyone is entitled to their Security Clearance. My understanding is that there is a sunset period. We are not sure when it is. It could be five years, but then someone has to go in and renew it. But then there are other individuals who may have it for life. Heres the bottom line. The whole purpose of Security Clearance, continuing is for the institutional knowledge. As someone who has been in a position now can call up and say what was it like when you were there and i dont have any problem with that. But what i do have a problem with is when someone does go on television who was the head of the cia and he says that the president hes in the lap of
putin or whatever language he used. People tend to grant more credibility. Its not about the first amendment. Its like this guy has got to know, hes got Security Clearance. Martha they are all saying this isnt going to change anything about their language and you just heard senator rand paul. He said im not looking to curb anyones speech. They are free to speak. It comes off looking like an action that is just taking to be vindictive and to try to shut them up and it probably wont work. Its not meant to be vindictive because they can say whatever it is they like to say. But when they say it with the benefit of having a National Security clearance or someone like sandy berger goes in. He takes out certain documents, we have to look at each individual case, but more importantly i think is that why do they have them . If someone lies to congress, should they have that Security Clearance . And i think its time for a conversation on this. Theres got to be more guidelines and more looksee it as to whos got it and why. Martha do believe with rand paul that it should be a
blanket situation for former cia officials . Hes basically saying these to be statesmanlike but now they dont they should all use that privilege across the board. He doesnt like the idea to name individual names and say these are the people we want to target. I dont see that it should be just a blanket. If there is a reason, just as if there were a renewal, there would have to be an approval. There would have to be an okay. That same criteria should be used assessing whether or not they should keep a Security Clearance. Martha in terms of the Collusion Investigation i just want to play this from adam schiff over the weekend. Its sort of typical adam schiff, but lets play it because heres the latest. I certainly think hes acting like someone who is compromised. And it may very well be that he is compromised or it may very well be that he believes that hes compromised, that the russians have information on him. Martha what do you think . This is more of we are going to get to the evidence, just
stay with us, stay with us. Its a bunch of nonsense, and i will tell you why. Clinton met with putin on separate occasions. 99, 2000. Bush had him at his ranch in texas. 2001, 2007. Obama was with him in 2009, cluster b13, 14, 15 after the annexation of crimea. It lets not turn this into the bogeyman is showing up. President s have meant with putin not just one time but they have had him at their ranchers and the residences. Martha every president has believe that they were going to be the one to change the relationship and they have all worked hard doing it. One last question for you. The news today that there are 12 states that the president could be on them. Do you think thats of concern for the president. Knowing the president , im sure hes not concerned. But i think it obviously depends
on what is on the tape. My understanding is that the president waived the privilege since a lot of the stuff was already a leech. He didnt seem to be concerned about it. Martha thank you very much. Thank you. Martha thank you for being here tonight and we will see you again soon. Hope to see you next time back in new york. Good to see you tonight. Coming up next, President Trump ratchets up the pressure on iran and his critics are not happy, but its his administration on the verge of doing something that both President Obama and president bush failed to do . Former state Department Spokeswoman marie harf joined me next. Also coming up, republican senator lindsey graham. Plant to snapback sanctions on irans oil empire. Do not play with the lions tail or else you wont regret it. It will bring you eternal regret. Martha that led to this with the president , in all caps i might add. It never, ever threaten the United States again. We are no longer a country that will stand for your demented words of violence and death. Be cautious so what is the next step . What is the policy towards iran now that we have backed out of the deal . What is stopping this administration from just openly advocating Regime Change in iran . If we have any further announcements on that front i will let you know but the president , his administration are going to continue pushing and advocating. Martha there has been nudging towards Regime Change in one way or another for more than a decade and perhaps one very big missed a golden opportunity. Five months into the Obama Administration uprisings in iran culminated in the 2009 shooting which riveted the worlds attention and perhaps presented a moment that might have been pivotal with outrage in the streets against them. President obama remained silent. Years later he pushed the iran deal, which critics have said failed to exist on any time anywhere in inspections. The administration sent bags of money totaling 1. 7 billion to
seal that deal. Joining me now, former state Department Spokesperson under President Obama marie har harf. Always good to see you, thank you for being here. Of course. Martha it seems that what we are seeing here is the same kind of backandforth that we witnessed with the north korean leader. We are now seeing with rouhani. What is wrong with pushing his buttons, given all that iran continues to carry out in The Middle East . I think its good to be tough on iran given what they are doing in the region. I agree with that but my question to President Trump, first about the tweet, or else what . What is he threatening . I get it that he wants to talk tough. Martha the snapback for the sanctions is coming. I dont think he was tweeting about snapback spirit with all due respect to the president , it sounded like he was trying to be tough, but the bigger question i have is what is the plan . The president bawled out of the iran deal, pledging to negotiate and better deal. To this point we have not seen any movement on negotiations. Mike pompeo has been very
focused on north korea. Hasnt been as focused on iran. They pulled out of the iran deal and pledged a better policy and as of yet we havent seen any new policy, any new deal and it doesnt look like anyone is actually focused on that, so tough talk is one thing. We havent seen any action yet. Martha must take a look at what mike pompeo said. Quite focused on iran over the weekend speaking to a large group that included a lot of iranians and a lot of american iranians who, for decades, have wanted us to stand by their side to overthrow essentially, or to encourage the change of regime in iran. Watch this. The ppg is launching a new 24 7 tv channel that will expand not only television but radio, digital and social media format so that already ordinary iranians inside iran and around the globe can know that america stands with them. [applause] martha thats what they want to hear and thats what they felt they did not hear in 2009 in the obama
administration. Its an interesting idea. Communicating with average iranians is a good thing. We try to do that in the Obama Administration, but heres the challenge. We have also heard from a lot of iranian dissidents and people who want Regime Change or want a better relationship with the u. S. That the u. S. Overtly helping them actually discredits them at home, that when the u. S. Is very bellicose orchids close to to calling for Regime Change, it actually empowers the hardliners back in iran, the people we dont want to empower. Martha i understand, but their economy is in tatters. They did use that money to continue to support hamas, to sow discord in yemen. They have used that money for all the wrong things. Thats true. Martha they have not put it back into their economy. There are ways to encourage them to open up twitter was one of the main drivers in the last uprising that we saw. So what do you suggest . What is the right way . One thing im concerned about is that by withdrawing from the iran deal and doing it
unilaterally we actually said to the Iranian Regime and the iranian people that the u. S. Cant be trusted. We promise that the u. S. Would be a part of this deal along with the rest of the world and we broke that promise to them. Its not about the regime. The iranian people i think after that decision looked at us and said wait a second, we cant trust the u. S. s words. Going forward, this administration that i know is very focused on iran. Martha why would the people of iran support the deal when none of the money they got for it ever went to them . A lot of it actually did go to them. Some of it didnt, but a lot of it actually did and we saw their economy coming back. They were able to get more economic opportunities. And then donald trump closed that door. So Going Forward we have to support voices in iran standing up to the regime, but we have to do it with the goal of not emboldening the hardliners and sometimes the president s really extreme rhetoric actually i think helps hardliners to say the u. S. Is our enemy. They cant be trusted. Thats not the impression we want to give the iranian people. Martha thanks. South carolina senator lindsey graham. Good to see you, as always sir. Everything she said is wrong. Shes a nice lady. The Iran Nuclear Deal went to the congress and it was rejected in a bipartisan fashion, but we didnt get 60 votes. It was voted on in the house in a bipartisan vote of rejection. Its not a treaty. Trump is not bound by the worst deal since munich. So i am so pleased that mike pompeo made the reagan speech toward a iran like reagan made toward the soviet union. I am so pleased that President Trump is leading the iranian president note there is a new sheriff in town. Everything obama did did not work. He would call through glass to get this deal with the ayatollah who took all the money. We are on the verge of history here. The trump doctrine when it comes to iran was Ronald Reagans doctrine when it came to the soviet union. It is an evil empire. We are going to stand with the people. Im going to introduce a
resolution soon siding with the iranian people against the regime and lets see how congress votes. Martha how will that work . I will have a resolution saying that we stand with the iranian people for their right to selfdetermination, condemning the regime for Holding American sailors hostage on the high seas, for disrupting The Middle East, for murdering innocent iranians who just want to be able to determine their own future. An indictment against the ayatollah and his henchmen. This is the worst regime in the world in terms of threats. Russia, north korea, Radical Islam like al qaeda are a threat but the biggest threat of all to me is this regime in iran. They are religious nazis trying to develop a nuclear capability. The question is what they hit riyadh and saudi arabia first or with a go to jerusalem. The arabs and israelis are now united against iran. It mike pompeo speech was awesome. President trumps tweets as there is a new sheriff in town. We are going to bring the regime down by helping the iranian people. Regime change is the only way to save The Middle East from just perpetual conflict. This regime needs to go. Martha how do you do that . You said maria was wrong and everything she said, but what do you think about the fact that sometimes this kind of talk and emboldened the hardliners . Whats your response . There are no moderates. Nobody is running iran except the ayatollah. If you want to run for office you have to get his permission. They knock everybody off the ballot that they dont like. So there are no moderates in iran. Break their back economically, impose sanctions on their oil, drive them out of syria. Dont cut a deal with russia to give them syria. Stand up to them, help israel deal with the iranian has blocked threat. Break their economy, stand with the iranian people, get information into iran that will drive the Iranian Regime crazy. We are on the verge of history here with iran and i want to complement President Trump and
mike pompeo. We are about to pull off something very big. Martha fascinating. Senator, thank you. Good to see you tonight. Thank you. Martha 105 days until the midterm elections and what if we told you that in some circles the president s Approval Rating has actually been going up over the course of the last couple of weeks . Martha new numbers paint a positive picture for the white house as they head into the midterm elections. President trumps Approval Rating jumped up one point from 44 to 45 , but what is perhaps even more striking, he is seeing very big support within his own party. At the president has an 88 Approval Rating among republicans of the last four president s, only president george w. Bush in the aftermath of 9 11 saw a higher number within his own party at this point in the presidency. Trace gallagher has more on all these numbers and the interesting insight inside them as we head into november. Hey, trace. The contact is important because it was taken over a fourday period beginning july 15th. The day before the president s News Conference with Vladimir Putin where mr. Trump question to the conclusion of intel agencies that Russia Meddled in the election. So the majority of this poll was conducted at the height of the criticism and yet the president s Approval Rating is off, though it is notable that 51 of registered voters do not approve of the relationship between washington and moscow. A democratic pollster who helped conduct the poll says welcome to the latest and most daring of Donald TrumpsHigh Wire Acts in which the president increases his degree of difficulty and manages yet again to stay on his feet. For example, half of those bowls are approved of the president s handling of the economy and 51 disapprove of his handling of border security. The poll also shows partisanship at an alltime high with just 9 of democrats saying they like
mr. Trumps performance as president. That is the lowest number of the past four president s when it comes to opposite party support. Meantime, the new gallup poll Shows Americans believe the number one problem facing the countrys immigration. 22 say if the top issue. Not only is that, that is up eight points from june, but 22 marks the highest point in gallup poll history. The previous high was april 2006 when 19 of cited immigration as the biggest concern. Though posters point out that when democrats cite immigration, they are likely pointing to the president s handling of the issue. Republicans, meantime are likely talking about the number of immigrants crossing the border illegally. 19 of registered voters polled by gallup say the government is the biggest problem facing the country and finally, just 4 of americans say the economy in general is the nations top problem. That is very good news for
President Trump, especially when you consider that in february of 2009, 86 of americans listed the economy as problem one. By the way, isis, the concern over isis did not even register on the pole. Martha fascinating. Thank you very much. Here now, karl rove, former deputy chief of staff to president george w. Bush and a fox news contributor. Mike allen is Executive Editor and cofounder of axios. Thank you for being here. Mike, let me start with you, its good to have you on the show. Thanks for being here tonight. When you take a look at the overall approval number, are you surprised Given Helsinki and all the rest that the president has ticked up a point during that period . Not at all. 90 among republicans i can go one better than those numbers that trace had up. Depending on what poll you look at, 7080 of republicans approve of the president specifically on his handling of
putin. How do you explain it . It doesnt matter what he does. They trust them and they like what hes doing. But there is an important puzzle that worries people in the right house that is not reflected in those polls and that is the excitement on the other side, the enthusiasm among democrats. I have a spoiler for you, a little sneak peak. Tomorrow morning when you open up axios. Com or my news order, the headline is going to be good news for house democrats. There is new signs of house seats moving towards democrats. The Cook Political Report saying they still see a blue wave driven by suburban professionals. Add to that if you look at president ial and party approval, other signs that are similar to what weve seen in past wave elections. Martha its fascinating. The president got so beaten up over the helsinki trip and some of the course of the rest of that trip and yet the number is rising and i wonder sometimes if all of the incoming that he gets doesnt bolster his support in some ways among his party. I think thats right. We are in a tribal phase in american politics, so if he gets attacked, the members of the tribe rally around him and the members of the opposition step up in their fervor. And thats why theres one thing in here thats important. Overall approval is 45. Republicans 88, independents was 40. Thats down to seven from last month. And you cant win and election alone. Democrat or republican without doing well among independents. While its good that he has all that support among republican. That means in deep red states and deep red districts that hes probably his allies in the congress are in pretty good shape, but suburban districts that are going to determine the control of the house, youve got to worry about that if you are sitting in the west wing of the white house about the number two climbing. Martha absolutely. When you look at those independents, you have to wonder whats eventually going to pull them one way or the other because the economy is in very good shape and thats going to
be a major Selling Point for republicans. They will look at suburban voters in places like philadelphia and say look, is your life any better and probably they will say it actually is and are they going to vote for democrats in that environment . I dont know. You are exactly right and thats why i can tell you democrats, at the highest level as optimistic as they are at the midterms, they are pessimistic about 2020 and thats the reasons you are pointing to. He has peace and prosperity. Carl can tell you thats what any incumbent president dreams of but in addition to the economy theres one other thing the republicans have to hang your hat on and even though there is a lot of excitement on the other side, nbc Wall Street Journal polling shows that there is a lack of excitement among millennials and hispanics, to cope very important core voter groups for democrats if they are going to take back the house and have it restoration. Martha i have to wonder about polls. We all have to wonder about balls after 2016 and whether or not people answer these questions, whether or not the
broadspectrum of trump voters pick up the phone or answer the phone or answer the internet questionnaire. What do you think . The National Polls got it pretty close. The individual state polls. And thats to be expected. I think the pollsters are working hard on making sure that their samples are representative of the country so right now i like im always cautious about taking one pole and looking at it. If you want to look at an average of polls that are asking similar questions and you will see that for example in this Wall Street Journal nbc poll and the generic ballot is plus six in that poll in the real clear politics average its 7. 4. And if you see it, the republicans are suffering among independents. They have moved between the last nbc Wall Street Journal poll to this one by a pretty significant margin. Seven points for the democrats. Theyre now 12. We are seeing this and all the
overall polls as well. Martha a lot can happen between now and november. I have to leave it there. Great to see you guys. Thank you. What a horrible story this is. boat accident. She lost her children and her husband. She was describing the horror as it went down in missouris lake leaving 17 people dead. Today they brought the boat back up to the surface as new questions are being raised about how this could happen. Since 1999, duck boats have been linked to nearly 40 deaths and have a troubled Safety Record built on land and in the water. Joining me now is stephen paul, an inspector who warns the Company Behind thursdays deadly accident of a serious design flaw in these boats last year. Thank you for being there tonight. If only they had listened to what you explained to them. Tell everybody what you think is the design flaw in these boats. Does it exist in all of them . Good evening, and thanks for having me on. Theres a handful of different issues that we find on these boats and the first issue that i
find inspecting the boat under d. O. T. Standards is that the exhaust is forward of the Passenger Department on the front of the ship. Likely leading to water getting into the engine and then stalling out the engine of course as well as removing the boats capability of purging its own water. Martha the other thing that you pointed out as the canopy. These are sort of retrofitted. Some of them are from 1944. The shell of them is from 1944 and they are the kind of boats that were used on the beaches of normandy, but then they add to them and they alter them and they change them. That is correct. Pretty much the only parts that are still from the world war ii era is some of the sides and realistically probably the dashboard. The boats had actually been cut
and stretched similar to a limousine in the interior is also getting widened a little bit the passenger space. Theres really whole not left of the world war ii one and it also has the canopy of the curtains on the side. Martha what you think basically acted as a trap in this case. I do believe so. Being shaped at the top kind of like a dome, if that thing went underwater people are going to folk dont like flow to the top and with a Sigh Curtains down its going to be extremely difficult to get out of that ship. Martha hope this doesnt happen to anyone else and we thank you for being here. We hope that people are listening to what you have to say about the way they are built. Thank you, sir. Good to see you. Thank you. Martha so from the Trump Campaign to the president s chief spokesman, sean spicer is now telling all and he is my guest coming up next. Martha joining me now, sean spicer. His book now out. Its called the briefing politics, the press and the president. Good to see you. Good to see you. Good for that stroll down memory lane. Martha i want to know what your gut feels like every time you watch that again. It reminds me of the intensity of the job. It was an unbelievable honor to do that on behalf of this president , this country, but it takes one set of clips like that to remind me that glad sarah is in front of the podium now and i get to spend a little more time. Martha you used to say its not about Palace Intrigue. Isnt that what youre telling us here, the Palace Intrigue . I dont think so it all. Part of it is to give people the context to what was happening on some of those key and pivotal moments. A look behind the scenes. For so many people, myself included growing up, they want to know whats it really like in the white house . How is the campaign going, and the pace of what the Trump Campaign and candidacy was all about that just lead into this historic transition in the white house, there was not a lot of time for people who really were witness to all of that to pause under talk about what was going on because there was always something next. I was able to sit back and hopefully for the reader, recreate some of the historic nature of what was happening. Whether it was the convention, the campaign, the debate. All of those things and kind of walk people through the uniqueness of what just happened. Martha let me ask you this. I dont think theres any more important Key Communications director than the president. He is the message guy and he understands the message and how to get it out to people. But did you think when you took
the job that he would change a little bit when he got into the white house . To some degree i guess. We always thought, everybody thinks that the office weighs heavy on an individual. And every president has talked about how the Office Changes them. You see things and become privy to things that you never knew and it weighs heavy on your decisionmaking process. But i think to your point, we and in particular approach this in a very traditional sense. I talked to my predecessors on a bipartisan basis and really thought of approaching the job in a way a lot of people had in not recognizing how unique donald trump was. Hes not a politician, hes a businessman. Hes a negotiator and he is not looking to do it the way that everybody else has. He wants to get results. Martha the Communications Department goes there all these different evolutions and they are still trying to get out in front of the president and line up with the message and pull it off. What do you say from the outside looking back at them . I think part of the reason i
was able to talk about some of the things that happened in his book is to take people through how that dynamic has changed and how, yes, you are right. It used to be that you would set up and execute the strategy and on the president would sign off on it and then you would execute it. Now hes the communicator in chief. He decides what hes going to do and we fall in line in the job is to get out there and echo and amplify the message that he has. Martha did you get shot out of the pope meeting . Its really interesting. Its all in here. I think theres a really great story about faith and patience in there. I ended up getting the president s social media aid, kind enough to bring a bunch of rosary beads into the meeting with the pope. As a picture of it in the book. The pope puts his hands on it and blesses it. A few weeks later i got to bring my family, my mom, my wife, my kids to meet the holy father. And to me, that was a lesson in patience, faith and trust in god. Martha everybody should read it. Thank you. The briefing with sean spicer. We will be right back after
