You had a very strong, long career in politics in South Carolina. Do you believe that President Trump cost you this election . I wouldnt say it was the tweet, but it was reduced town it was for trump versus not. I lost that race. Martha do you say that as a warning to other candidates out there . Would you change anything about your campaign . We always monday afternoon, quarterback campaigns and those things you couldve done a little bit differently, thats the nature of life. But what i would say is this, the warning is for all of us because if you look at my actual voting record i have been with the president 89 of the time, so 11 i have disagreed on, but i love my brothers and sisters. It doesnt mean i agree with them on 100 , 100 of the time. I think its important for all of us to stop and say wait a minute we have an institution set up by the Founding Fathers, where vigorous dissent, disagreement was part of it. They want the legislative branch to be a check on the executive branch and vice versa. When we lose that, if the litmus test of our elections, who is 100 in allegiance with somebody else, i think we have lost an awfully important part of what makes our Country Special and unique based on the Founding Fathers design. Martha do you think it was wrong for him to do that . To put that weed out there and get involved in the primary at that late moment . Its america. Everybody is going to do what they are going to do and the president certainly has his prerogative to do what he wants to do on that front. But again, the issue is do we want to have litmus test, and allegiance test in running for office, or do we say look, if you are with me 90 of the time, because i voted for every single agenda martha may be the reverse is also true. If if youre agreeing so much wih the things that hes putting out there and you are voting with him 90 of the time, why go on tv and bash them if you feel like generally hes moving in the direction you want to go . It not a bash. This is what we have going right now. I went to Business School at the university of virginia and they believe in the socratic process, you threw an idea down the middle and youre debated long enough. Martha absolely. And that is important. Thats the american way. We can agree to disagree. I for instance voted against the omnibus bill. I think it was the right boat. The president himself as leader said he wont sign any more tha that. But to say i disagree with with the bill ultimately is again a stand tied to issues and beliefs that i have long held that are important to the constituents that i represent. I dont view it as something against the president though it was certainly cast a something in this race. Martha this is what senator bob corker said about republicans and the party right now. We are in a strange place. Its almost its becoming a cultish thing. Its not a good place for any party to end up with a cultlike situation as it reles to a president that happens to be reportedly of the same party. Martha what you think about that . What my opponent said last night, her words were this is the party of donald drake from. I dont believe its the party of donald drake trump. It is the party of the taxpayers of South Carolina and georgia and florida and go across every state in this u. There were a lot of republicans out there who worked their souls, they worked hard for years stuffing envelopes and doing all the things you do in politics. Thats who the party belongs to in this notion that anybody at the top we are a nation of laws and not men, should somehow be the person martha it sounds to me that you just dont like him personally, but most of the time, 90 of the time you like what hes doing. Is it personal for you, and is that necessarily we . When you lk at the economy, you look at north korea, you look across the board. Does any part of you say maybe i should have just sort of not disagree . Martha kept to myself about how i felt about him personally. I would ask you to look at my record. I have never said anything about him personally. Wh iav disagreed with were certain stands that he took and i thk that is legitimate fair game in the world of politics. I understand that, but the fact of the matter is the people of the First District of South Carolina clearly believe the president is intereste ng for t when the presited for Katie Arrington they voted for her. I think that it was interesting, because i think you were g on an important point wi congressman, which is this. He talks about the fact that he voted with the president 89 on policy. So clearly in a vast majority of the time he agrees with him on the issues. Ylat this came down to he was attacking the president , and the president s style and the people of South Carolina clearly by thebers bieve that the president was fighting for them. This is a question about disagreeing on policy as he was making at the end because he, by his own voting record does agree with the president on most policies. What it comes down to is that nd of its a question of style and tone, because the president has been very clear about his ingness to fight for policies and issues that he thinks are important to the American People and the vote was clear, that the people of South Carolina took Katie Arringtons position over mark sanford, who had represented this district for a long time, then went on and served as governor twice and then come back and now serve several terms there is the First District congressman again. Hes a wellknn person there. I think clearly the people of south calina didnt like his apprch to dond trump. Martha it was only a few thousaotes. In a primary thats often the case, but it would seem thats true, but this isnt an open seat or against a freshman. Mark sanford is a wellknown never mind the First District. Martha what about bob corker . Hes been a thorn in the side of President Trump a lot. Sometimes they seem to make up and he goes back at him. He says that what he sees in the Republican Party, which you have worked for long before you worked for the president has become a cully a cult of trump. What do you thk about that . First of all, any party that controls the white house, the president of t dominant figure in that policy, thats true going back all throughout modern history. This is no excepti,ut the reality is that what senator corker and congressman sanford to some degree and i say this very respectfully forget is that its not like the president is just saying something and nothing is happening. The people, whether its tennessee or South Carolina or we saw this with senator flake in arizona and others where the people are actually agreeg with the president s comments and tactics and strategies and his fight. Its not like hes just attacking an into the the president is doing this and its resonating with them and the people especially at the base of the Republican Party believe that the president is fighting for them and they are tired of the happy talk and the talking points in the excuses and they like the president s results. Martha i know you have a book thats about toom out. Theres a quote from the book, you were asked in an interview in Rolling Stone if you miss it and you said no. Its unbelievably intense lonely job as press secretary. It strikes me that you were there in the beginning, so now that you look at the accomplishments that have happened since you left, there mustve been moments where you thought to yourself, is this going to work, this whole thing . Which will thing . E beginning . Martha the presidency, when you were there in the beginning. With her moments if you wondered if you would see the accomplishments that you have seen over the past 500 days . Let me go back a second, because the quote was partial. The beginning part of that quote that they didnt put down was that i said i was very honored to serve both the president and the American People and i think sarah is doing a fantastic job and that being said i missed the people. I miss the interaction but the intensity i dont miss. It is a truly intense and sometimes lonely position, but i was honored to have an and i think the president and Vice President president getting that opportunity to me. That being said, at the beginning, this president continues to be an absolute disruptor. A lot of people still havent gotten the message. But i think when you look back and you were kind of commenting to someegree with congressman sanford, the to agree to to to which he has achieved results, whether its in trade policy, foreign policy, all of this is stuff, those are the results. Generally the only person on the committee who meets with rosensteins devin nunes and sometimes trey gowdy but devon always reports back to us, the sff people do in the account that they gave that when they were trying to get information, which we are entitled to, by the way, it was congress that created the problem they have to provide the information and for whatever reason rosenstein refused to do it. After one of these meetings in particular it got very heated and he basically threatened staff, threatening to subpoena their emails, their text messages, their phone logs. Is that how you see it . Unwittingly they are proving our point that they do abuse their power have gone way beyond their lane. I would say its important to point out that Rod Rosenstein, i have nothing against him personally. I think he has acted very wrong here. He is the one who signed the fourth fisa application. Hes the one who signed onto that and there are real questions about what was contained in that application. So in a way he was also being investigated himself. I think he should be recusing himself from this entire matter, but in any event, he has a double motive here. Not only is he somehow digging in to protect the institution against congress, but he also has himself in that fourth fisa application which he signed onto and we believe there are irregularities in that application. Martha how do you see this all being resolved . I think ultimately the president may have to come in here. Martha and do what . Basically order them. He does control the Justice Department. It can give them very legitimate orders, karen turn this over to congress, do what you have to do. If it does have to go to the house, if there is a censure vote, which i hope we dont have to do, but if we have to do it, we will do whatever we have to. The American People should know what was the basis of this investigation against the president s campaign, who was involved in it, or their informants, how many, where they paid, why did they get involved, stofestigation, orat at i come after the investigat started . These should be simple questions, simple answers and we have gone through this for months now. As far as flipping, you have to have information to give and as far as i know, from everything ive seen throughout this entire investigation there is nothing that Michael Cohen would have on the president and also i dont think is the type of person to make something up for the purpose of getting himself off and so far im not aware of any real evidence against Michael Cohen unless they go after everything he possibly could have thought of doing over the years. I think right now as far as im concerned, just more rumors coming out. Your private conduct is fine, but when it impacts the credibility of the newspaper then you have a conflict in the paper has to come first. He fired that woman. The New York Times hir this woman, ali watkins, despite knowing she had a relationship, a romantic relationship with a source. Martha and it continued to let her car the intel committee. And once she gets to the times she withholdsrom then the fact that she has been contacted by the fbi in february of this year and told that they have seized her phone records. She doesnt tell the New York Times that shes actually involved in a criminal investigation. Martha we saw her with rachel maddow, giving her all signs of praise and telling her how fun it i followher footsteps. A little funnier than people realized at the time. Senate intel has been so frustrated in recent weeks by the constant dribble of leaks about who is testifying to the and when. Then she went on to say the committee that lawyers would leak info about upcoming appearances, blame the committee and then use as a pretext not to cooperate. That might have been true, but thats going to be tough to convince people of at this point. Thats right. So by doing dna analysis on all these remains we will be able to uncover good information on a number of these cases. He pled guilty to four counts of hazing, four counts of serving alcoholic beverages and one count of consumption. He actually was under the age himself. He was 20 years old. But heres the really important part of it. This took place, his conduct took place in the socalled social, which was actually an extension of hazing and it was actually caught on the basement video, which of course there was an attempt to try to conceal it. We have evidence that they attempted to tryoonceal, which proved his guilt and he admitted guilt to something which is being contested b all the other defendants. So there are serious charges with serious potential jail ti.
