I know when you first got the news that the president was considering amassing National Guard troops at the border of your country, you said you would need some clarity on that. Have you gotten it . I think weve gotten some clarity, weve spoken with secretary nielsen. Weve gotten some clarity on that. The Central Point is that we do believe it is in the interest of both nations to have secure borders. We dont always agree on how to achieve that objective, but we do believe that our cooperation is valuable and we want to keep it going so long as it is respectful and it works for both sides. Martha what is the impact of having National Guard troops on the border with the relationship of mexico which has had some difficulties in recent months . The president canceled their trip to washington which would be a tough conversation with our president. This is not the first time with the National Guard has been at the border. Its not something that we welcome. We understand the president s objective of securing borders and we are and favors of securing borders, but we believe that we can achieve more through cooperation. Weve had very good cooperation with the different security agents on the u. S. , both on immigration and trafficking drugs and basically all organized crime. Martha the president tweeted a couple days ago, mexico is doing very little, if not nothing from stopping people from flowing into mexico through their southern border and then to the United States. They laugh at our dumb immigration laws. They must stop the big drug and people flows or i will stop their cash cow, nafta. Winning the wall. Today he said he was appreciative that the caravans have been disbanded. It looks like that rhetoric has cooled a little bit. Can you explain to us what you did to disband that caravan and where exactly those people went . First of all, i would like to differ from the president s position that mexico does do a lot to have a secure legal state. We are all for that. If you look at some of the numbers of people from Central American countries, you will get a completely different story. In the case of the caravan, its important to point out that the mexican authorities have proceeded according with our own immigration policies. The socalled caravan which have pretty much concluded or will concluding any time now. Some of its members by their own will have decided to finish the caravan and again, mexican authorities have been in contact with the u. S. For this purpose. I think that caravan does call the attention to an important point which is way we must work Better Together for our immigration policies and it just last week or a few weeks ago, secretary nielsen visited mexico and we worked precisely on those issues. Martha in terms of the process where people come through the southern border, the accusation of some mexican officials is that they are helping them to get across the United States border, there is a process that funnels people through mexico and into the United States. Are you saying that policy will change . That is clearly not the case. Mexico does not advocate nor promote undocumented immigration by our nationals or from any other country. We do believe that migration policies should be humane and thats what were doing. At the same time, Public Officials and people who are there for both parties and thats why we needed this. Martha in terms of the future of nafta, the president has said get it done right or well terminate the agreement between the United States and mexico. There is also an indication tonight, it looked like an m agreement was coming forward and it might be announced next week in peru, but now the president seems to be backing off of that as well saying basically, well see and we are going to give her the time it needs. Whats your understanding on that . Both sides are attacking difficult issues. Nafta is 25 years old. We believe that it can be improved and modernized, but we believe that its been very beneficial for the countries. Mexico is interested in having north america remain a region. We share the view that we must do better to bring more jobs to north america and thats the intent of the teams that are negotiating. There are some tough issues to tackle, but the latest reports do show progress. We have made ground on nafta. Adil needs to be a deal for all the parties to be able to work and thats what were trying to accomplish. That is precisely the message that our president has made clear today and i hope we do get a chance to prove that because that would be in the interest of the United States as much as in mexico. A successful mexico is as much in the interest of the United States as a successful United States is in the interest of mexico and that is precisely what were trying to accomplish with nafta. Martha there was a word today that there was concession made on autos to mexico. Do you feel the white house has given some ground on that issue . After many negotiations, every side will have to compromise. The important thing is in the end, we achieve a result that is successful for the three parties. We believe its perfectly doable to get a winwinwin solution with nafta and we believe that the next 3040 days are crucial and that is precisely again what the teams are focusing just as we speak now. Martha in terms of a visit from their president , do you see that happening anytime soon . A visit to the United States . Speak with the relationship with the United States is very important for mexico, no doubt. Both sides believe that we should have optimum conditions when our president s meet. Were working on both sides for that. I would certainly not discard the fact that the possibility that they will meet in the future, but i think its wise to make sure their teams have really paved the way for a successful meeting and thats what were working on right now. Strzok writes i think we need to consider the lines of what we disclosed to doj. For example, the leftist ablation notes we will not disclose. During a congressional hearing last year, brennan claimed under oath that the cia didnt use information from the dossier to move the investigation forward. Watch this. Because it wasnt part of the intelligence information we had. It was not in any way used as a basis for the Community Assessment that was done. It appears that harry reid wrote a letter in august of 2017 after the convention saying evidence of a direct connection between the russian government and Donald Trumps president ial Campaign Continues to mount. You also say that reid had the impression that brennan hundred ulterior motive. He concluded that the cia believed the public needed to know about the russian operation including the information about the possible links to the Trump Campaign. Exactly. First of all, i love the fact that his people dig into the book. People on all sides find material that supports their case or that they didnt know. And they think its relevant and this is probably an example. Harry reid wrote a letter to james comey, he was trying to get comey to investigate what he believed where these connections between the Trump Campaign and the russians. He at this point was briefed by brennan. That briefing was not just for harry reid, he was briefing all the congressional leaders at that point. The gang of eight, the intelligence community, the chiefs and the leaders of the senate and the house. Their greed briefing wasnt significant because read acts on it and he believes that brendan is trying to get him to prod comey to investigate. You can look at that as antitrump bias, there is no question that harry reid is a fierce partisan and was a supporter of hillary clintons, but there were also legitimate concerns within the cia, the fbi, and anybody who is getting these briefings about the prospect that kremlin cutouts were trying to influence themselves in the major american campaign. Martha that goes back to the question of what the evidence was and what they were basing it on and whether or not john brennan had any sort of political motivation to say to harry reid i think you better go over there and bug jim comey about this because we want this to be lit up. We want stories to be written about it, we want congressional members to be fired up about it. On october 30th, he writes to comey, you expressed explosive information about close ties and coordination between donald trump, his top advisors, and the russian government. What is that explosive information . We know about the carter page thing that led nowhere and now we know that after a year of investigating this, Robert Mueller himself said theres no criminal target. What explosive information was harry reid talking about . Remember that in july, the fbi opens up a counterintelligence investigation. It is multifaceted. It involves carter page, george papadopoulos, michael flynn. They are seeing all this potential evidence. They dont know the answer yet. Martha so why are they pumping it through congress and saying please make a big stink about this on october 30th right before the election . Thats harry reid. John brennan in your book. Speak out lets parse this correctly. John brennan was briefing harry reid. Harry reid is getting the briefing. James comey has just written his letter saying the fbi is reopening the investigation into the clinton email investigation. Martha he concluded that the public needed to know, it had no evidentiary findings that were exclusive, that they needed to know about the rush operation and this was right before the election. That was the letter in august and yes, harry reid did want it out that the fbi was investigating. He wanted an fbi investigation. There is no question about that. Hes a partisan. He wants it known to the public that the republican president ial campaign is being looked at by the fbi. Martha he said he had an ulterior motive and then he went and what that ulterior motive was. I visited one of the schools that he and his wife are sponsoring and advised him on education policy and his colleagues. Im not doing that right now. Martha the other side is this. Im curious what conservatives are going to want to know about from him. Congress loves to get Corporate Executives behind that table and rate them and tell them they need to be more regulated. Anybody whos ever searched for a hotel or a pair of shoes or a basketball hoop knows that the second that you do that, theyve got your number. They know exactly what to send to you. You sign off when you start posting pictures and looking stuff up online. Youre giving up some of your privacy. It seems like everybody is shocked that thats actually what happened. At the little casablanca, isnt it . One of my sons and said to me your 74 and even you know that youre giving up some of your privacy when you do this. Why doesnt everybody else . This isnt for free. If you pay any attention to whats coming in, you see its being sorted in certain ways. This is a huge thing. 2 billion users, this is the technology thats amazing. Lots of people use it for a very positive purposes. My wife uses facebook to community with friends and family. People do this all the time, but people cannot be naive about it. We all need continuing education on what is going on in this process. Martha dont you think some of this comes from theres this idea that an infringement of some of these sites led to the election of donald trump . I think this is implausible that it led to the election of donald trump, but this is what animated a lot of the political democrats. What was spent in some of those ads is pretty small in comparison to the campaigns. I have to tell you, i think it is a liberal group. I think there are a lot of people there who know they took to the left and theyre trying to adjust on that. We dont want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. This is technology that can be used for great social good, a lot Like Convention fire. It is used, it is consequential. I hope its a serious hearing and i have a feeling that he is going to accept responsibility. Ive found him to be a humble guy who actually listens. Hes got two ears and one mouth and uses them and that proportion. Hes listened very carefully to me and other people and i was impressed by him, but hes going to get to ear. Martha shall speak for herself in a moment, but she offered 6,100 and you guys are pushing for 10,000, so the suggestion is the offer isnt good enough, you want some thing better. We appreciate the rays and the 10,000 is over three years. What we are pushing for now is increased funding for our schoo school. Martha c are satisfied with the 6,100 . I am personally and every teacher ive talked to is. Want more funding for our schoo school. Martha because . We have schools that have textbooks that are out of date. Some of them still have george w. Bush is the current president. Some schools have textbooks that are falling apart, desks that are falling apart, schools that are essentially not safe to work in. Theyve got mold issues. Weve got a teacher in manford who her students have to wear their coats and class because they cant turn the heat up high enough. They have to have half the lights off. We dont have funding and our classrooms to be effective. Martha you must wonder where all the money goes, dont you . You pay taxes, everybody pays taxes across the state. In most cases, they dont go down, they go up over the years. You have to wonder why things used to be better in schools and i was in such a mess. And oklahoma, weve seen a cut to education over the last ten years, 200 million and thats what youre asking for back. In oklahoma, its easier to cut taxes than it is to raise taxes. The plan passed last week by our legislator is the first increased in taxes in over 30 years. Weve had our state revenue go down rather than go up. Martha what would you say to mary fallin who is up next . What would you say to the governor . You have the platform. My message would be to fund our school. We are content with the pay raise at this point, but we need funding for our school so we can keep our support personnel so we can have appropriate resources so we can do our jobs effectively. I cant teach my students if they dont have the resources they need to be successful. I teach high school. School biology. Martha god bless you, good for you. I was terrible at biology. Thank you. Good to have you with us tonigh tonight. Where is the funding going . Why do kids address it with coats on in their classrooms and why did they have books that say george w. Bush was still the president . We passed the largest increase in educational funding ever in oklahomas history, a 19 increase in the total budget for educational loans which is over 50 of the state budget and we gave our teachers a 1518 pay increase. If you look at the seven states including oklahoma around our state, weve gone for being the seventh two now second in the region and the highest teacher pay, plus weve had really good benefits for health care and retirement and our retirement system is in great shape for our teachers and we reallocated an extra 50 million, 33 million for new textbooks and 17 million on top of that for whatever the schools want to use it for. The plight has been its not enough, we want more. It was 480 million. We dont mind them coming to capital and talk to legislators. I wish theyd been there about earlier. The fact of the matter is, this has been going on for a long period of time. Decades upon decades upon decades that weve had trouble with underfunding teachers salaries and frankly, we have 50,000 more students and our School System over the last ten years because new jobs were recreated. We need more funding for classrooms, but thats also a tax property issue with the local school board and thats on the voters to decide those things. Its a priority decision. Martha the tax revenue base should be going up. Is there a tax revenue going up . It is now. Weve been through a fiveyear downturn with the energy sector. Its been a tough go, but now were slowly, but surely climbing out of that. Weve tried to get this hurdle past and as the teacher mentioned, we finally got some revenue increases to be able to pay for this. We have a lot in oklahoma which is constitutional amendment that says we have to have 75 of all of our legislative voters, members, excuse me to vote on increasing revenue. Its been a hard lift. My comment was we know its not enough, but is it giant step forward. Its a huge increase. There is a 50 million new dollars going into textbooks and also to the state. We know they want more, but its what we can do for right now and i think its a giant step forward. Martha they pay an enormous mountain taxes and its tough to figure out why your kids dont have a decent textbook when you live in a nice place like oklahoma and they wonder where that money goes, where it disappears into bureaucracies and why it doesnt go where it needs to go. It sounds like youre trying to get it there and i hope you can work this out because im sure you want the kids to go back to school and im sure the parents want them to go back to school. Absolutely. April is attempting month and we have some classes that were canceled this week and act tests were missed and we had to schedule those types of things. I think Teachers Want to go back. Ive met with a lot of teachers this week. They tell me what we appreciate the pay raise, we appreciate more funding, we want more, we want to get back to the classroom and teach. Smith and draining the swamp, but some of these brandnew congressmen who let cameras follow them around say wow, this is not what we signed up for. You said its only 7 billion, can we move on . The swamp is geographically washington, d. C. , but in a metaphysical sense, its just a place where values change. Im not a career politician and i dont want to be a career politician. One of the problems in this town is theres too many career politicians. I think we have a bipartisan bankruptcy going on. Both parties are engaged in a quiet deal that if people support our base and if it leads to bankruptcy, okay and youll support your base and if it leads to bankruptcy, okay. Both parties are more interested in supporting their special Interest Groups and looking the other way. It was a good three day view. We hear from about 7 00 in the morning until 9 00 at night. I joke that i dont think ive worked so hard to accomplish so little. If you stop working, you wont accomplish anything. Leadership comes up to you and asks how youre going to vote on this and he said are you going to vote for the budget and i said no, im not. He says why not . And i said it doesnt balance. He says it balances in ten years and i said how long have you been here . He said 12 years. He said youre right, never balances. Thats a leaderships representative telling me you never balances. The incentives are backwards, upside down. There is no incentive to save money. Here, there is no incentive to save money. There is not an incentive to do what you believe in necessarily or what you believe to be correct. There is an incentive to get to yes to be on the team.
