Its ten days since Roger Goodell gave that one interview to cbs norah odonnell. During those ten days every single day has been dominated by the headlines of bad behavior by nfl players. And he will take questions, we are told today, Roger Goodell. What he knew about ray rice, the video inside the elevator, what did he know about it, when did he see it . He will also be asked about Adrian Peterson of the minnesota vikings, of course. Why he did not act to punish peterson in any way after these allegations of child abuse against peterson. Then theres the question of the carolina panthers. Greg harvey, finally benched by his team because of a Domestic Violence conviction and also he will be asked about ray mcdonald, plays for the San Francisco 49ers. Is disagreement active despite being arrested on suspicion of Domestic Violence on august 31st. An awful lot of questions for the commissioner. And, of course, he will also be asked, have you thought about resigning. Theres a lot of people have said he should, gretchen. The nfl did announce some new Domestic Violence initiatives. That happened yesterday. What was that about . Obviously in the wake of all of this there has been a lot of criticism of Roger Goodell and the leagues policies overall. In fact, one womens group in particular has been flying these banners over nfl games saying goodell must go. So yesterday in a memo to the team and nfl staff Roger Goodell announced new financial initiatives to support the National Sexual violence resource center. He also talked about Educational Programs for players and everybody involved in nfl teams. And he said in his memo, gretchen, and im going to quote here, these are by no means final steps. We will continue to work with experts to expand and develop longterm programs that raise awareness, educate, and prevent Domestic Violence and sexual assault, both within the nfl and in our society in general. So he will probably put more meat on those bones today, talk more about the initiatives, the nfl is taking. But, of course, its all about the pressure on Roger Goodell and hes finally going to face the music to some extent this afternoon, in just about an hour. Jonathan hunt, thank you so much. Now to the latest in the fight against isis. France launching the series of air strikes reportedly destroying a supply depot in Northern Iraq killing dozens of militants. The ariel assault could be a big help for iraqi and Kurdish Forces in that area who are locked in a fierce battle with isis for the control of the entire region. This coming one day after the senate gave president obama the green light to fund to harm and train serial rebels for the fight against the terror group. Ed henry is live at the white house. I dont know, ed, theres a lot going on there. How is the Coalition Building going with all of these other nations . Good to see you. Its a very mixed bag because the white house big time today is trying to tout the fact that the everything from have joined the fight today with the air strikes over iraq but important to note that the french are also making very clear theyre not going to do air strikes over syria. On top of that the white house has been working for weeks now to get other countries, key allies, to join with air strikes and no one else have stepped up. Theyve stepped up with other assistance but not air strikes. Retired general john allen is leading the effort to bring the coalition together. I said, what about the commander in chief . Listen. Is the president going to do this next week and build this coalition himself . Is he going push it . The president has been engaged in this effort for weeks now. Im confident those efforts will continue at the u. N. Both in public settings and in private settings. Hes been doing for weeks and only gotten france to add to the air strikes. Were please with the commitment weve received from countries around the world including sunniled countries in the region to make contributions to this broader International Coalition to take the fight to isil. Pressure on the president next week as he will be in the new york for the u. N. General assembly meetings. A chance to build this coalition. On this whole issue of combat troops. I asked josh earnest will the u. S. Military advisers, as they call them, get combat pay. He referred us to the pentagon. All right. Ed henry, thank you so much, live from the white house. Vital part of any war, in this case a war against isis, is gathering intelligence on the enemy. Extracting intel on isis remains a long shot even if we capture terrorists. At the same time, there are also concerns that as we focus on this new danger we may be losing track of an old foe. Remember al qaeda . Here not really on the run. Some intelligence officials are warning a syrian arm of terror group is planning to attack a u. S. Homeland, a new group, as it competes with isis on who poses the top Terror Threat to our nation. A former u. S. Attorney general under president george bush and he is my guest today. Attorney general, we have had many discusses about how we interrogate terrorists abroad. Whats changed since you were the attorney general . Well, whats changed is two things really. First of all, because of the snowden disclosures the isil has a more sophisticated grasp of the way we gather electronic intelligence. A lot of our capability has been degraded. When you come to questioning people that you capture the Current Administration has scrapped the Interrogation Program, abolished the cia program completely and set the limit at the Army Field Manual which is available to terrorist groups to use to train their recruits and resisting interrogation. Thats what they do. So when, in fact, did they actually would capture somebody out in the desert in one of these countries, theyre not going to bring them to gitmo anymore, right . Right, because the senate wont let them take them from gitmo to the United States. So the administration has been pursuing a policy of not taking anybody to gitmo and they havent. So what we have seen over the last couple of years, and many people were advocates of this, was that the president was in favor of air strikes. Instead of capturing these terrorists he was killing them. Then we cant get any eyewitness testimony. Theyre difficult to make a dead terrorist talk. We try but its very difficult. So, where do you stand on what we should be doing . I think what we should be doing is, number one, putting in place a classified Interrogation Program and not be telling anybody what it is. So that the terrorists understand there is something within the law but beyond the Army Field Manual that we can do when we capture them. And then capture them and work on them for as long as it takes to extract intelligence because with isil the faster we get at the leaders, the easier its going to be to stop the cycle. You know they have a different strategy from al qaeda. Theyve followed a field of dreams strategy, build it and they will come. Theyre building, so they say, a caliphate. Theyre attracting, according to all reports, thousands of recruits. If we can stop that message from getting out, then we can stop that growth. But the only way to do that is to get at the leadership. Theyre good, especially with the social media and the recruiting of werners, many of them americans, as as it is. For example, if this happened under his nose, who did it . When did he become aware of it . How could husba we know there blocked on George Washington bridge. Actually they found nothing to tie christie to it in terms of having known about it beforehand. But when did he know . What was his relationship with the people who did know. Come on. What did he do wait a minute. All these investigations. I wish you were this interested when it came to benghazi and what the president knew and what they didnt know. Forces cant win a land war and then going on to say but iraqi forces can because if there is proof that iraqi forces can, its not immediately evident to most observers given that those same iraqi forces over the last few months have not only had to go into retreat as a result of the advance of Islamic State militants but have also given up two Islamic State vast amounts of u. S. Military hardware they were originally given by the United States. So not clear at all that the second half of that proposition is in any way accurate. Its really interesting, simon, because for me whenever i hear former president bill clinton say anything now about policy, i think immediately about his wife, Hillary Clinton, because shes probably going to run for president. And you have to wonder that whatever comes out of his mouth, would she agree with what hes saying . And especially with this because this is a controversial stance because it sounds like hes siding with president obama, but would she . Well, look, i think clearly whatever he says has to be seen through that prism. And around the world as well as here as in the United States. People are going to view it in exactly that light. But ultimately the challenge for anybody thinking the nations top office is going to be to define a strategy that can work in iraq and syria. And its not clear that currently the United States has adequately defined that tragedy. The attempts by the president constantly to characterize this as a Counter Terrorism operation and to insist that u. S. Boots are not going to be needed on the ground is coming under intense scrutiny in many other world capitals where they find that strategy questionable given the track record of those Iraqi Government forces and also, of course, the fact that the moderate Syrian Opposition youve got to train them from scratch. Police are describing a person of interest in the case nearly a week after Hannah Graham disappeared after leaving a party. Investigators now searching an a apartment and seizing a car all to try and find her. Live in charlottesville with the latest. New leads today, right . Exactly, gretchen. Let me set the scene for you. Were just behind the Jewelry Store where Hannah Graham was last seen on that surveillance tape. From that tape they got leads from a person of interest. Almost six days to the hour after she disappeared. Police ended up at an apartment complex a few miles away from here to search a car. When they got there overnight they found a car and they also developed what they call probable cause to get a search warrant for the apartment itself that was there. They confirm that both the car and the apartment are linked to this person of interest. You can see they took out a lot of evidence bags here from this apartment. The interesting thing is what else they found at the apartment. There were three individuals that were here in the apartment at the time that the vehicle was being seized. There was not probable cause to arrest those individuals. And a supervisor on the scene did not believe he had the legal basis to detain those individuals. And right now they are confirming that one of the people at the apartment was the person of interest and they went on to say that if they do develop some evidence out of their investigation today they could possibly make an arrest in this case. There is a press conference now scheduled for 5 00 p. M. Today, just a couple hours from now, where the police chief promises an update on the case. A lot of breaking developments today. So in another huge story happening right here in new york city today, moments away now from a major News Conference with nfl commissioner Roger Goodell set to speak publicly today on the leagues Domestic Violence policy chl.
