Thanks, arthur. Lets bring you up to speed on crisis in iraq. Bullet points for today. Isis has taken out are ttilleryd trucks. The president authorizing the air strikes and emergency food drops to help religious minorities surrounded by the militants unable to get away. The bombing was done by two u. S. F18s dropping laser guided bombs on isis which in the last week took over six towns in Northern Iraq and the mosul dam which controls electricity to much of the country. Doug is live for us at the pentagon with more. We just heard from the pentagon a bit about the Tactical Mission here. What more do you know . Well, a senior u. S. Military official says that todays air strike and any that will follow will hit targets of opportunity. Today a mobile artillery piece towed behind a drug firing into the city offish irbil. Two laser guided bombs were dropped on the artillery piece. An american on the ground says the air strike was successful. A retired u. S. General who is very familiar says the air strike was effective. They were promised military equipment a decade ago. It never arrived. Reporter the attacks were approved yesterday by president of the United States who is very, very reluctant to use force but who relented in the face of indescribable barbarism. Isis forces below called for destruction of the entire yazidi people which would constitute genocide. They can descend the mountain and be slaughtered or stay and slowly die of thirst and hunger. The president will not allow the United States to be dragged into another military conflict in iraq. What are we now hearing about last nights humanitarian air drop . Reporter were hearing from secretary of defense chuck hagel that was the air drop was a suck success with 60 of 72 bundles hitting intended targets but critics say much more will be needed both on the humanitarian front and military front. We cannot just do pinpricks. We must have 24 7 air cover around there. This reluctant president may not favor that approach. One indication is the pentagon has not even given this operation a name, which is highly unusual depending on how it turns out, history may provide that name. Gretchen, back to you. Thank you so much, doug. Who are these yazidi refugees that were trying to help. They are a secretive religious sect that follows islamic and christian practices along with other ancient beliefs. There are 700,000 yazidi around the world. A majority live in northern mountains of iraq where they have been left stranded without food or water. Hundreds of them have been killed by isis militants who see them as devil worshippers and want them wiped out as they push to create their own Islamic State. Isis giving the option to other minorities to join up, pay a tax to live or die. The white house very aware of the potential political fallout from launching military action in iraq. The pentagon not even bothering to give the mission a name. White House Press Secretary josh earnest earlier discussing the president s decision to take action in iraq in light of his public push to end the war there. I think the president was determined to use military action to protect american personnel in harms way in iraq and determined to use American Military assets to try to address an urgent humanitarian situation and the president is just as determined to make sure that the United States is not dragged back into a prolonged military conflict in iraq. Karl rove served george w. Bush as white house chief of staff and Fox News Contributor and my guest for a friday. Karl, great to see you. Great to see you, gretchen. Lets start with what we hear from doug in that theyre not giving a name to this mission. Why would that be . Because they want to make it an incident and not a mission. There lies the problem. The president has no strategic view of how to handle iraq. In fact, hes arguing with himself. When he ran for president in 2007, he said well have a stay behind force that will execute targeted antiterrorism missions. All of this conversation about iraq falling into disarray and falling apart is not going to happen because were going to leave behind a mission, a u. S. Mission to help iraqis defend themselves and to take targeted action when necessary. Unfortunately because he, himself, messed up the negotiations over a status of forces agreement, theres no stay behind force like he advocated in 2007 and were seeing the results in the last couple of months as isis has taken over a substantial part of the country and is persecuting christians and other religious minorities. We started reporting on this as you say weeks ago that isis was moving on into these major towns and taking them over. I think a lot of people will find it fascinating that suddenly the administration makes this call and i know it has a lot to do with these ethnic minorities being targeted. This has been going on for some time. Its not like it just happened yesterday. Absolutely. In fact, it goes back farther than that. Joe biden said well divide the country into thirds. Sunni, shia and kurd and well support them. If that was the case, why werent we aiding the kurds whose militias are very tough fighters but theyre running out of ammunition trying to hold off isis or isil moving into their territory. The administration has to have a strategy and commitment and the president needs to stop looking at the polls and start looking at the interest of america and its allies and use forces available to us in order to keep isis and isil from further moving on our allies and friends in the region. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Latest poll had disapproval on Foreign Policy for president obama at its highest mark ever at 60 . Karl rove, always great to get your insight. Have a great weekend. You too, gretchen. Thank you. Lets head over to arthur. Well, folks in hawaii are getting the first of a onetwo punch after Tropical Storm iselle slammed the big island earlier today with powerful winds and heavy rains bringing down trees and knocking out power and right behind it, hurricane julio. We go live to the big island for the latest. Will . Reporter were starting to get the first feel for some of the damage that were seeing from this storm overnight. Were seeing a lot of power lines that have been knocked down. There are about 20,000 people in this area right now who dont have power. Let me show you exactly why. Every street that we have driven on this morning we have seen trees like this. Huge trees down blocking the streets. Theyve knocked down transformers and that gives you an idea of why so many people dont have power right now. This storm was downgraded overnight but there was a lot of damage. We saw roofs that were ripped off from the storm. We saw one home that had the ceiling collapsed in the bedroom because so much rain had poured in. We spoke to some residents who told us theyve never seen a storm quite like this. This is the first storm ive been this worried about because weve never seen one come straight at the big island before. Thats really a first. Reporter and thats because theres only actually been two hurricanes who have made landfall since hawaii became a state in 1949. Pete, here, has lived here for 50 years and hes actually experienced two of the hurricanes. Pete, how would you compare the past hurricanes that youve been in to the storm last night . Probably the worst. A direct hit. We had just skimmed by the island before. This was a direct hit. We have these trees that are really fragile and they took out our lines. Reporter thanks a lot, pete. Pete is trying to work with a chainsaw to get through so they can drive down the street. Hes got the right shirt on that says machinist but a lot of work to do, arthur. Back to you. Will, be safe out there. Thanks, arthur. A new Mini Documentary getting a look inside the isis threat as one News Reporter embeds with the militant group. And no sooner did the threeday truce end earlier today than israel reported hamas launching rockets back into the country and the jewish state firing right back with air strikes across gaza. The renewed violence comes as egyptian sponsored talk on reaching a longer term deal hit a deadlock. I wish there was better news to report, conor. What can you tell us . Reporter despite efforts from egypt to broker a ceasefire, we hear a lot of military activity in and around gaza. All day weve seen both rockets being fired from gaza at least 45 from hamas into israel. Weve also seen israel strike in gaza several times today. The intensity has not been today what weve seen in past days in terms of heavy, heavy firing but after the 72hour ceasefire expired this morning, we have seen resumption of military back and forth fighting all day. But there is some hope tonight there are deals in the works for a ceasefire. Weve been hearing and saying that for four weeks now. You always have to sort of take that with a grain of salt. Egypt is continually talking to israeli and palestinian sides but both sides are holding firm to their positions. Israelis saying they wont negotiate until the fighting stops and rockets stop being fired from gaza while hamas is saying theyre not going to negotiate or theyre not going to stop firing rockets until there is a Firm Commitment by both israel and egypt to lift the blockade. This is position weve been in for 4 1 2 weeks and both sides digging in despite efforts of egypt and the international community. Significant fighting in gaza. It doesnt look like its stopping any time soon, gretchen. Thank you. Back home with Immigration Reform at a standstill in congress, we are waiting to see if president obama will make a move on his own. Look at the new stats just released. It shows a huge rise in immigrant children caught along the border. A surge in three regions anywhere between 50 and 100 but the Rio Grande Valley has doubled. The white house points to a recent easing of that wave. We have seen a downward trend over the last four to six weeks of the rate of which unaccompanied children are being apprehended at the border. However, its important to understand that compared to a year ago or two years ago, there still are apprehensions taking place at an elevated rate. While they have come down from the peak that we all saw earlier this summer, the rate is still high. So what are political risks of president obama taking executive action so close to terms if he chooses to do that . Time for some real talk. Al and mike are joining us. Great to see you guys. I missed you guys on vacation. Sure you did. Im sure thats all you thought about. Why do you think i came back on a friday . What are the political risks of president obama taking executive action on immigration if he chooses to do that . Make the republicans really mad. He needs to do something about it. John boehner said you have to do it on your own contrary to the opposite of what hes saying about the Affordable Care act in which hes suing them. Were not going to do anything. They passed a bill before they went on a fiveweek vacation that had no chance of getting to the senate or approved by the president. If you were writing a hollywood script over what not to do if youre a democrat, this would fall right into that narrative because the political risks are huge. Republicans will capitalize on this and pounce and probably i would admit unfairly so because this is really the face of these children, this is the sad tragic face of a broken immigration system in america. However, if president obama goes riding in on a big white horse and tries to take executive action, republicans will beat that drum in november and theyll win big. Maybe hell take that white horse from nantucket or Marthas Vineyard and bring it back home because during his twoweek vacation hes going on, hes going to come back to the white house. I thought all president s could govern from afar. What does this mean . Either he gets criticized for going on vacation and then he gets criticized for coming back from vacation. Lets not criticize that. Lets talk about why is he coming back . There has to be a motivation. Theres something behind theres the optics of this. This is all about optics. We all knew that george w. Bush could govern as effectively from the ranch in crawford but you never let him alone from splitting wood in the woods. President obama goes off to these big mansions in Marthas Vineyard. Sometime between sunday august 17th and 19th, Something Big is going to happen in d. C. Because the president is coming back. Hes up to no good. We need to keep an eye on him. Hes up to mischief. Maybe. Life is about choices. So time to bring in the guys. Frank, david, and arthur has a lot of titles. A former criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor. I find this fascinating. This gentleman lived in california. He worked in new york. Thats a long commute. Its a brutal fivehour commute. A bicoastal week every week. Good for him. Hes made his money. Why not enjoy it . What do you make of this . I think its an excream case. I think the new york to california is an extreme case to make the example. Thats a really tough commute. Im asked all the time how i balance work. We work hard as criminal defense attorneys. You are asked that . I am. I am a lot because im playing the role of lawyer and im here a lot and i have an 8yearold boy. I tell you, the greatest party ive ever been to in my life was davids daughters bar mitzvah. He invited me appropriately so by myself and that was my night with my son. Im close enough to him, dave, im not leaving my son. Bring him. It was fantastic. If he would have said it really isnt appropriate, i would have stayed home and watched cars 2 for the 40th time and been just as happy. An interview was done with the new ceo, a female of general motors, mary barra, recently by another network where matt lauer said how do you balance this time . Many people were offended by that because would he have asked that of a man . You say what . I say, you know, for a woman its different because she delivered the kid and went through nine months of labor. For a guy thats less sympathetic and perceived as soft to say i need to take time off from work. Its a strike against you. Do you agree with that . Not necessarily. Again, i think whether or not the question was being asked because she was a woman or not, im not sure. I dont know. I know ive been faced with those situations so many times. I think in this particular case its the extreme view. Are you kidding me . Up until ten years ago, a man could not go into his boss to say i want paternity leave. It was unheard of. Its a new world. I understand that. The other thing is this. Maybe ill get in big trouble for saying this. I believe a mother has a special role in a childs life. As close to as i am, there is nothing a father has a key role. I just was on vacation. I cant tell you how important it was for my husband to be there with my kids. Got to leave it there. President obama staying true to his threat last night sending in f18 jets and bombing isis artillery in iraq this morning. Chuck hagel says the u. S. Has enough intel and resources there to launch both manned and unmanned strikes, the president Standing Firm on not putting boots on the ground. Ed henry is live at the white house. A busy day there. What is the white houses strategy now for trying to stop what many claim to be an actual army and im talking about isis. Reporter gretchen, welcome back. The message from josh earnest again and again at the podium is this is a very limited operation they are dealing with humanitarian aspect of helping these persecuted christians and other minorities as well and protecting u. S. Personnel who are in iraq who could be targeted by isis. I pressed josh earnest on the fact that isis longterm could be a threat to the United States so what are they doing about that beyond just this narrow mission right now . Listen. What is the strategy to stop isis . That tragedy is related to ensuring that they cannot use instability in iraq as a base of operations. They are today. How do you stop them . What the United States is doing is were doing a couple different things. The first is we are taking the kind of action that will ensure close coordination between Kurdish Security forces, Iraqi Security forces and American Military forces. Reporter the point is you hear a lot about coordinating with the iraqis, the kurds, when theres questions about whether those military forces can really get the job done and so in the days ahead there will be more tough questions for this administration in terms of whether or not they are snuffing out this threat which is a threat in the region but could spread around the world. All right. So critics seem to think the white house could be boxing themselves into a corner by limiting themselves, right . Reporter you heard the president last night and josh earnest in the last few moments because of the searing experience of the war in iraq saying theres not going to be any boots on the ground. This will be a limited operation. Folks like Lieutenant Colonel ralph peters say the president actually should leave it more open ended to make sure he gets the job done. Listen. It is our fight and its water under the bridge that we should have left troops in iraq. Obama wouldnt. Aversion to all things military. To paraphrase the late, great james brown when it comes to military operations, if youre going to do it, do it right and do it with soul. When you use the military, you hit them hard. Reporter the president is also getting pressure from the left. You have the democratic senator from connecticut putting out a statement fearing the president s commitment is too open ended. We pressed josh earnest how long is this authorization for the u. S. Military to use u. S. Air strikes. He couldnt answer. Pressure from the left that its too open ended and pressure from the right that at this point its too narrow to stop the threat longterm from isis. Ed henry live for us at the white house. Thank you, ed. Arthur . So earlier this week we told you about a restaurant. A restaurant that gave patrons a 15 discount for before their meals. That North Carolina restaurant marys gourmet diner, is now stopping the policy. They posted a note this week saying they are facing a freedom of religion lawsuit and they are sorry if they offended anyone. Lets talk about this. This has been going on for four years. If people came in and they were very clear to say it didnt have to be praying because you were a christian. Any type of meditating or praying for another religion or whatever the case may be. Being grateful for the bounty before you. You got a discount. Now four years later, mr. Attorney, possible litigation. Would that have happened . You know, i dont know. Its not that clear cut. Put it this way. If it was on a military base and they were doing that or in the cafeteria of the United States congress, yes, thats an open and shut case. Here you have a small mom and pop store and theyre making a decision to treat people a certain way and as you just pointed out, its not that theyre saying only if youre catholic or only if youre muslim. If they saw anyone giving grace to whomever, dont they have a freedom . Thats my argument. My argument would be dont they have freedom of saying, hey, i appreciate what theyre doing. Im going to show my appreciation by giving them a free bowl the oatmeal. You say even though its a privately run business that they probably would have been an individual would go in and say i dont believe in god or anyone. I believe this food is before me because i worked hard and someone made the food and i paid for it and so im eating it and i shouldnt have to pay 15 extra that the guy next to me who is genuflecting is not paying and ultimately the judges would find in favor of the person who had to pay the extra 15 . Im surprised we havent heard about it before. Its been going on for four years. Arthur, we have to head over to one of your pals in the next studio. Best of the best. Time to check in with Shepard Smith reporting live. Did you ever think you would see this day, shep, when arthur is the summer sidekick . No. I saw his tweet today. Youre going to tell us your favorite kind of nuts. Are you serious . No doubt. When we talked about that on the morning call, i knew that that could be a troubling issue for the both of us. You never know what the guy is going to say. Be careful. Im behaving. I promise. Im listening. What do you have coming up . A crazy news day. Team fox coverage of the dire situation in iraq and the deepest American Military involvement there since the end of the war. Well hear live from a reporter who is innish irbil. This is the lay of the land. Theres irbil and mosul. The whole city is on edge. There was a feeling of doom that militants could knock through city gates at any moment. Shell tell us if that changed after todays bombing raid. A big hour of news ahead top of the hour. Well see you then. Thanks much. America strikes isis from the air as islamic militants terrorize the minorities. What else can the u. S. Do to help keep christians and others safe. All babies are special but this newborn is extra special. The odds against seeing one so aft r astronomical native americans call it an omen and then theres this. Something nobody wants to see on their Beach Vacation except the guy we have coming up. His amazing video as jaws strikes back. Its almost shark week again. Well be right back. Generals say isis is an army and it takes an army to defeat an arm army. Heres an exclusive inside look at how isis actually operates and what their scary message is for america. You can see more of that documentary on vice news or follow them on twitter. Time for us to bring in president of the hamilton foundation. Great to see you, christian. I heard a lot of people say that isis makes al qaeda look like jv. What do you think . I think theres some truth to that. In a way, this group is much more interested and capable of exporting jihad. Right now they are looking at consolidating their own homeland if you will in iraq and in syria. Certainly much more than the taliban and perhaps more than al qaeda they have the means and the skill and the determination and the discipline to bring jihad abroad. Can we curtail them with simply air strikes . Some of the generals saying you have to fight an army with an army. Thats right. The general in charge of coordinating security with iraq saying that this is much broader. This is a real army. Thats something that that vice documentary shows. These people have military discipline. They have skills for Strategic Communications and for internal state security to preserve the gains they have made. Dropping a few bombs for humanitarian mission is not going to defeat this army. It will not shape the future of iraq or middle east which is what we should be concerned with. Its reminiscent of libya where we went to war for humanitarian reason. Then we saw what ended up happening there, which was not a good thing. I want to get your thoughts on this embedded video with vice and with isis and the fact they threatened to fly the flag of allah over the white house. When i was in egypt before the uprising there, my tour guide told me that was his goal at the time which made me nervous. Now were actually hearing it from this group. Should we be fearful . Its not going to happen tomorrow of course and frankly wont happen ever but this group can cause significant harm and we tended to dismiss or to not take seriously the ideological and political threat. We look at isis. We look at the taliban when they ran afghanistan saying how could anyone find that appealing even the most conservative of muslims, who would want that tyranny . We fail to realize this is a potent political force. Some people actually want what they have on offer and other times they use fear and intimidation very effectively to implement their rule. You see them making strides in this group which has a half billion dollars they stole spreading this ideology. If you were still inside this administration, what would you advise them to do . The most important thing is pushing realizing we have three iraqs now and pushing sunny iraq and rebuilding our ties to secular sons of iraq and pushing away from isis and fighting a global war of ideas not with western diplomats speaking english about tolerance but with people who have a voice within islam who can undermine islamism and jihadism. Tell gretchen the statistic you gave me how the sharks are being wiped occupy. 70 to 100 million sharks are being killed every year by the hand of man. Thats three sharks every second. They could go extinct in our lifetime, and once we push it to a certain level, theres no way to really bounce those animals back. We learned from panda ands other things, once they get to a certain critical level its hard to bring them back, and things like the great white shark are being wiped off the planet, sometimes accidentally, on purpose.
